Bill: Hey Jeff, lets hypothetically say Chase Daniels continues as a ball of fire and continues to put up monster numbers, wins the Heisman and National Championship. Then on Draft day the Rams go and select Chase in the second round, would you be happy with that pick? I've always thought of him as a 4th or 5th rounder, but lately people have pushed him up to 2, labeling him as Drew Brees. And I don't know anymore, maybe his height isn't a big deal. What are your feelings on that, would you be happy if the Rams took him number 2?
Jeff Gordon: He's not a second round pick. The kid is a playmaker and a leader, but size matters. The spread offense doesn't translate well to the NFL and Chase must still prove he can gun the ball into the small windows of NFL defenses. If Oklahoma State can make life difficult for him, what would the Eagles or Giants do to him?

royearl: Don't you think it's about time Richie Incognito was cut? He's not that good and he nearly cost the Rams the game.
Jeff Gordon: Funny, but in Washington writers were wondering why some of the Redskins didn't have Richie's combativeness Sunday. At least he cares. I'd rather have to calm somebody down than have to fire him up. His loss of composure can't be excused, but this team is in no position to discard starting offensive linemen. You saw how the Rams O-line played last year when he and other starters were hurt.

Barf3: Jeff,

I know many will ask your opinion on Incignito so I won't. But as a long time fan his act is no longer tolerable to me. His need to lose control at some point during a game is simply a selfish act by him and there is no room for it on an NFL field. As a fan of this team I would rather do without him then tolerate this on going lack of class by him. The organization is sending the wrong message to us fans if they continue to allow him to play on Sundays.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams would send the wrong message to fans by losing week after week. Fans bemoan the team's lack of passion for four weeks, then want to guy a cut for going over the top during an emotional victory. The guy is a hothead and he'll have to grow up to get another contract here.

But this is not chess. It's a violent sport. The Rams have plenty of polite players. They need more "borderline trained killers," as Jerry Glanville liked to say.

John: Hi Jeff,

The Rams homepage has a picture of Bulger (currently lead picture for "top story" no. 4) that could be a poster-picture for "How Not to Throw a Football." At one time Bulger was All-Pro, Pro Bowl MVP, with one of the highest lifetime QB ratings in the NFL.

Shea, I believe, was quarterbacks coach with Saunders at KC and the two of them surely are working with Bulger's basics. Why the lack of progress? What's up?

Thanks for your time, as always.

John
Jeff Gordon: It's a process, as they say. Bulger has been something of a back-foot passer even in his best days. The Rams can work him all day in practice, but game action is another thing altogether. Bulger seems to have more zip in the no-huddle offense, which also takes away from pass pressure from the other side. I would use that scheme more often.

Mike Richards: I've been a Washington area Rams fan since I was 8 years old, I believe I still have my Pat Haden jersey somewhere. Anyway, my 12 year old son and I were being ridiculed all the way into the stadium yesterday, received dirty looks during the game as we screamed "go-go-go" like little kids on OJ's fumble return in front of a silent stunned crowd, and after the game all the back to the car. Wearing my Adam Archuleta jersey (yes, I heard a LOT of grief for wearing THAT one...lol) and he wearing his Pace jersey, it was GREAT walking out of Fedex field to my car adorned in my Rams' flag, our Rams pride flying high. I can't wait to go to work with all my Redskins coworkers.

I'm hoping I'm wrong but we may very well go 1-15 this year, but at least my son and I were there for the one win. Make me a liar Jim and make this season a remarkable turn around and bring back those glory days of the late 90's!!! Do it for Georgia's memory, the team hasn't been the same since her death. This helps erase MY memories of a 51-7 playoff loss to the Redskins here at RFK when I was in high school...today, I am PROUD to be a Rams fan!!!
Jeff Gordon: There are some more wins on this schedule. How many? We'll see, but there is still lots of work to do. It always helps when the other team makes unforced errors, as Washington did. The Rams played hard, so that's a start.

Tackleberry: I have a little collegiate vent here, and it isn't how USC is sliming their way back toward #1 (how did they leap-frog an undefeated Texas Tech again?).

All hail the SEC, right? At what point does an upper-tier SEC team losing to an also-ran SEC team (see Auburn this weekend) become an upset and not a sign of "how much depth this conference has", seriously? I'm not a Big 12 fan, but they have just as many Top 25 team as the SEC and of the Big 12 teams that have one loss they are to a quality team. Meanwhile, Florida lost to Mississippi, Vandy lost to Miss St., and LSU got rolled by Florida. Not every SEC team is good, and it is frustrating to listen to the national media justify the bad inter-conference losses. If Kansas St dropped Oklahoma at home, Oklahoma's title hopes would be over, period. The balance of power has shifted.
Jeff Gordon: The Big 12 is nearly as deep this year. Nebraska almost toppled Texas Tech. OSU burned Mizzou. Kansas State may get somebody big, too. The Big 12 will have more conference losses to discuss during the weeks ahead.

Both conferences are very strong. The Big Ten? Not so much.

drelboc: Hey Gordo;

Have you heard any Cardinal trade/FA rumors come to the surface? What are your thoughts about Rafael Furcal? Is he someone the Cards would try to sign or will the money that he will command and the home town ticket keep him stuck on LA?

Thank You for taking the time to share with us fans Mr. Gordon. It is always very much appreciated over here in my nick of the woods. THANK YOU!
Jeff Gordon: Furcal's first choice is to stay put. His lively postseason is driving up his value, though. Other teams are looking for a shortstop and that position isn't deep in free agency. That is why Renteria could be a more realistic short-term solution.

justin: I was reading that an idea of trading skip for Zobrist has come about (I personally like the way he plays). Would you really think the cardinals or the Rays would do that, and move him to second, then to go on and sign Furcal and use the rest of the money for bullpen help and to re-up ludwick and ankiel. I personally think that would make us solid and zobrist may play better with an everyday role. thanks for your thoughts
Jeff Gordon: This is exactly the type of deal Mozeliak must make, given the free agent marketplace. Zobrist, like Schumaker, has struggled to get regular work in the majors. He was productive when he played, however. He has always hit in the minors, although his high HR-per-AB ratio for the Rays this season looked like a fluke.

The Cards have lots of commodities in the system, but near-term middle infielders isn't one of them. Swapping an OF for an INF makes great sense.

virginiatom: I was at the game yesterday at Fedex and can attest to the energy and heart of the Rams team. They had a workman like look reminiscent to the Vermeil days. But when we take off the rose colored glasses we see a team that had outstanding field position much of the day due to poor punting and turnovers by the Redskins, followed by the Rams inability to punch it into the end zone. This game did not have to be as close as it was. That has to change because they won't win many like this. It seems the only play the Rams have for putting it into the end zone is the fade to the corner, which hasn't worked all year. THe Rams have to start scoring touchdowns instead of field goals, and Sanders and Bulger needs to take the responsibility for this. With Holt, Avery, and Jackson capable pass catchers, there is no reason balls aren't being caught in slants across the goal line or in the back of the end zone like every other team in this league.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. Lots of work yet on the offense. LOTS.

Tackleberry: What do you do with this Rams' offense? It looks terrible. Holt & Bulger look like they have never played together before and Holt is a ghost out there right now.
Jeff Gordon: Get more speed on the field, protect Bulger and get the ball downfield. Those are the priorities. Opponents will load up to contain Jackson, so the Rams must take advantage. Lots of play action, lots of quick three-step drops -- and then some home runs to loosen things up.

virginiatom: Note to Saunders. Take the fake pass and handoff to Jackson out of the playbook, and while you're at it, the lateral pass to Minor. Doesn't work either and every one knows they are coming. You have Avery, Holt, Burton, and Jackson running down field. Please get them the ball.
Jeff Gordon: Fair 'nuff. The Redskins were sitting on a lot of the Rams game plan Sunday.

larrylangley: Hi Gordo
!st time ? here. What was with the different # and mohawk hair cut on Chase Daniel this weekend?
Jeff Gordon: The senior are taking turns wearing No. 25 to honor late teammate Aaron Rogers, who collapsed during a preseason workout in 2005 and died. The mohawk . . . that was just Chase being Chase, trying to keep everybody loose.

HEG: Gordo it seems Mizzou fell right into Ok. St. game plan-the plan for Ok. St. seemed to work perfectly to win the game; where Mizzou's plan to me seemed to focus on not losing; there is a difference in the two- Ex.- Mizzou on the opening drive got to about the half yard line & chose to go for field goal instead of going on 4th down for T.D.- all the previous games they would not hesitated to have gone on 4th down in this situation; to me this showed the Coach plan was not to lose instead of plan to win as discussed above; Mizzou's skilled positions players seemed to have a lackluster game; the defense played about the way expected but overall the offense to me let the team down- Ex.- bad judgements by QB, dropped passes, lack of running attack& it seemed to me Maclin let down on occassions in the game- overall Mizzou seemed to be conservative & not aggressive on offense as in the past- the only redemption would be to beat Texas this week-end & if this doesn't happen they could drop out of top 25. Re. the Rams; they did show some forms of life; we will wait & see if this carries over to next game. Agree or disagree on statements above?
Jeff Gordon: Agree on the first drive -- settling for a field goal gave OSU a huge lift. It showed a lack of confidence in the offense (the ball was inches from the goal) and defense (which would have OSU pinned if the play failed).

The offense did let down. Maclin was hobbled during the game, so don't single him out. The interception off of Alexander hurt. A couple of other balls could have been caught. But OSU was well-prepared to defend the spread.

virginiatom: In his first start, Green didn't light up the world, but with some practice and playing time to get the rust off, would he be better than Bulger at this point? Bulger is simply not the same. He wastes time outs at the most ridiculous times and with no concern at all, can't throw the ball long down field anymore even when he has time, doesn't see the field (yesterday two passes right into the hands of Redskin defenders that were dropped) and his demeanor is so sluggish and low key it seems to hold an offense back from being up tempo and crisp. Even his going to the huddle from the sideline on a new possession is a slow walk. He is being paid alot of money and has a responsibility as the quarterback to set the tone for this team, whether he likes that role or not. Its time that he does it, or he moves aside for somebody who will. After all, it doesn't say much when the offensive coordinator is dumbing down the play selection because of a lack of confidence in the abilities of his starting, veteran quarterback.
Jeff Gordon: Don't blame Bulger for the timeouts. His teammates were confused by some of the extra motion Saunders put in the game plan. But, yes, Bulger really needs to pick up the offensive tempo. If he doesn't, the team won't win many more.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Rickie Weeks has fallen out of favor up here in Milwaukee. Defense aside, he has some pop and speed...which could fit nicely into the 6 or 7 holes of our lineup. He had inconsistent success with the Brewers while being forced into the leadoff spot, but I think a change of scenery and philosophy could serve him well.

The Brewer's are looking for a cheap CF and a reliable defensive 2nd baseman. They also want more LH bats and a true leadoff hitter. Would Skip Schumaker and Adam Kennedy be a good starting point to get them to trade within the division? I certainly don't want to strengthen another team in the Central, but this may be an opportunity to get some power and speed at 2B, that doesn't include sending Rasmus and a top pitching prospect.

Felipe Lopez seems like he may have just been lightning in a bottle for TLR. One of those great second half additions that falters once he's given a big league contract (Ronnie Belliard).

Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Lopez was better than Belliard here, but he is not a sure bet to excel in '09. He is not a bad fallback. Weeks is a guy who cold use a scenery change. He does have some tools and you have to love his power.

Tough to make deals in the division, though.

therealdealankiel: If this team has one big trade in them, I would like to see them get pitching...either a solid #2-3 starter or late inning relief. This would mean we'd have to skimp on the middle infield again. How scary has Renteria's decline been? Looking at his numbers, I'd take it over Izturis. Is this a case where a change of scenery could get him back to batting .290 with 10-15 HR's, 70 RBI and 10 stolen bags?

If we were to sign Renteria, what type of contract would he be asking for? Would Izturis take a deal as a backup, or has his defense priced him into being a starter? Finally, what type of deal will F. Lopez be looking for? Thanks for all of your insight, GREAT message board!
Jeff Gordon: Lopez has zero leverage to ask for big money. Re-upping him would likely be easy. Izturis may prefer to start, but who wants a 20-RBI shortstop? I doubt there is a big market for him. Renteria may be a .260 guy instead of a .290, but he could get 40 to 50 more RBI than Izturis. Edgar is nearing the end, so $7 million or $8 million for next year would be a fair price. The dearth of FA shortstops helps his price.

ueaces: Hi Gordo!
Love all the great work you do. I never miss any of your columns.

Lots of Card fans seem to be pushing to sign Furcal this winter as a free agent, but I can't imagine this happening. This a reach IMO considreing the amount of years and money he would command on the open market. However, making a trade with the Marlins for Uggla seems reasonable, particulary since his salary can be controlled for the next couple of seasons. He would not come cheap, but I think he can be had. What a great fit for the number six hole in the batting order. If the birds could pull that off, I would go ahead and resign Izturis and invest the rest on pitching. Any thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: It would take a lot, maybe even Rasmus. But if the Cards could acquire him and sign him, that would boost the offense in a huge way. The Cards's offensive improvement ought to come in the middle infield, because the OF was quite productive last season.

Pete: My questions lie with the bullpen. I know Russ Springer was very effective in the role he adopted with coming in with runners on base, but do you think it would be prudent to bring him back and clog up the bullpen numbers? It seems to me that a healthy Josh Kinney or Motte could capably fill that fole at a distinctly cheaper price and have significantly better stamina when used on consecutive days. Also, don't you think Josh Kinney, if healthy will garner strong consideration for a late innings role next year. He was unscored upon in his return this year and does not walk people a la Izzy and Franklin. Also, what is Tyler Johnson's injury status going into next season? If he's healthy and we add a veteran like Ohman or Affeldt and cut ties with Flores we will be in pretty good shape from the left side of the bullpen. (keep up the good work)
Jeff Gordon: Tyler Johnson, who knows? We'll believe in his recovery when we see him in a Cards uniform pitching well. We've learned to ignore all medical projections. His return would lessen the need for LH relief help, but the team needs to make at least one quality addition there.

Springer would still have a role, even with Perez, Motte and Kinney on the right side. His return would make it easier to move McClellan into the rotation if needed. You can never have enough bullpen help.

9elbirdos: Jeff,
Long time reader first time poster. Would it not make sense for the Cards. to see if there is interest in Ankiel from the Yankees for Cano.

Would you also not seek interest in Guzman of The National's.
Thanks for your time.
9 elbirdos
Jeff Gordon: Again, that is exactly the sort of deal Mozeliak must consider. Extending Ankiel's deal could be tough, so dealing him is an option. Then Rasmus could have a clear path to the Cards outfield.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

As you can see from today's posts, I am thinking of the middle infield from a cheaper perspective. With Pujols, Glaus, Ludwick, Ankiel and Rasmus/Wallace/Mather in the wings, I think this team has it's power. I don't think we need to trade the farm for a major infield facelift. Getting 10 HR's, 60-70 RBI and solid D from SS and 15-20 HR's, 80 RBI and some speed from 2B would make this team an instane contender.

I've heard too many people asking for Hanley Ramirez, Ian Kinsler or Dan Uggla...those are unrealistic to me, as other teams will probably be willing to offer more. What about Jose Lopez in Seattle? Placido Polanco in Detroit? Mike Aviles in KC? Clint Barmes in COL (ultimate utility addition, 2B AND SS)?

I see a major opportunity for MO to make his splash in the trade market. Any GM can make a splash by spending 25% of their payroll on a washed up middle IF...if he can find slight upgrades for the middle infield while retaining either Lopez or Izturis, he will be in position to spend that money on another starter (even if Carp is healthy, there is no such thing as too many good starters) or get some serious BP help. And just because there's $30 million to spend, that doesn't mean it has to be spent now...

I would be very impressed with a rotation of: Wainwright, Carpenter, Free Agent/Trade, Lohse and Wellemeyer.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will spend every bit of that $30 million, but much of it will go to their own players, as we saw with Lohse. Some of those names are obvious targets for OF-for-INF deals. If the Cards are willing to move Wainwright, Perez and Rasmus, maybe the Marlins would talk about Ramirez. But probably not.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

This team is at serious risk in the leadoff position if they trade Skip and Rasmus doesn't gel as a leadoff hitter. As I see it, if this team doesn't get a leadoff type at SS or 2B, and Skip is gone, 2009 is in serious jeopardy no matter what kind of middle of the order bats or front of the rotation starters we add...

Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Why would the Cards trade both Skip and Colby?

vikelt: Do you think a trade for Mark Buerhle is do-able/advisable? [How many years left on his current contract?] Yahoo report on Chisox notes Cabrera and Crede are leaving; Ramirez will be moved to short leaving holes at 2B and 3B. With progress of Danks and Floyd, Buerhle may no longer be an untouchable. Cards could put together a package of 2B Kennedy, 3B Freese/Craig, Peneiro, and Anderson or Mather.
Jeff Gordon: Mark is locked up for the long haul, so dealing for him could make sense. Kennedy trade value: None. Pineiro trade value: None. Craig trade value: None. Mather trade value: Limited. Anderson and Freese have some value, but the White Sox would want young pitching in that deal.

Cooper0413: Gordo,

Will tickets to the All-Star Game be released to the general public? If so, do you know when?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The public allotment will be small. I assume it would be done by lottery or over the Net. According to the Cards official web site, MLB controls those tickets and will announce how they can be purchased.

Andrew: Gordo.. My man..

Let's keep it nice and short.. In your mind, who's gonna be playing 2b and ss in 2009 for the birds on the bat? Who's gonna be closing? Any chance we make a huge trade this offseason??
Jeff Gordon: Huge trade? You bet it could happen. Mozeliak wasn't afraid last winter, moving Edmonds and Rolen in strong trades for this franchise. We've thrown all the obvious middle infield names out there in this chat. Predicting it is impossible. I'd live with Renteria and Lopez if the resources are spent elsewhere.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

My argument against blowing up the farm system or spending crazy dollars on a big name FA SS or 2B continues...

What made the 2005 team so good? That team got a combined 9 HR/70 RBI out of 2B, 8 HR/72 RBI out of 3B, and 8 HR/64 RBI out of SS. I understand that the '08 team got around 25 RBI out of SS, but we also got 99 RBI out of Glaus alone. The '05 team had similar production out of 1B, OF and C. That team scored 4.97 runs per game versus 4.81 per game in '08.

My point is, this team is a healthy Carpenter, reliable BP arm and a minor infield upgrade away from being a VERY good team. I see little value in breaking the bank on Furcal/Cabrera or trading a future stud for Uggla. This team could use more protection for Albert, but he had names protecting him in '05 (Walker and Edmonds), not numbers.
Jeff Gordon: Good points. I believe the Cards could get upgrade both the middle infield spots at the right price, either with moderate free agents (Renteria, Lopez) or via trades. That would allow biggest investments in pitching.

I'm not in the trade-the-house-for-Holliday camp. But something does have to give in the OF that something could be Ankiel, if the right trade emerged. At some point, the team will have to deal from strength.

wotownramsfan: gordo, this team stinks. i know everyone is hapy about the win, but give me a break. haslett's defense finally plays well and then they fold at the end. do you think it's time to cut ties with bulger, holt, and pace? i love pace but he is always getting nagging injuries and holt doesn't seem like he cares, and bulger may be the worst signing in the history of overrated qb's. clean house and let's start over.
Jeff Gordon: Certainly the team has to evolve. Is Bulger done? The rest of the season will tell, since he no longer has the Linehan albatross to complain about. Holt is facing lots of double teams and he lacks the speed he once had. But let's see if Saunders gets him loose with his new plan to move him around.

Pace may move down the trail, too, but it's not like the team is loaded at OT. The RAms probably look there in the '09 draft, but it's not like Barron has arrived on the other side.

Let's see what Haslett can do with over-the-hill gang for the rest of this season.

Darrell: Jeff,
It looks to me like Bulger had no arm strength anymore. I know he throws off his back foot a lot, but even when he steps into one he can't get it down the field.
Jeff Gordon: He has never had the big home-run arm. But when he is confident and setting himself, he can throw the deep outs and hit a few long throws here and there. A bigger concern is his lack of accuracy on the mid-range stuff. He used to never miss those throws. Now he misses them all the time.

nick banche: Jeff,Can lightning strike twice with the cards getting a ss from the padres? How do the clubs match-up for a potential trade? Greene is going somewhere why not here?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, the Cards could move an OF, one of the young 3b, Anderson the catcher -- whatever fits for S.D. The trade route makes a lot of sense for the Cards because they have no choice but to deal an OF or two.

rpk: Had that unnecessary additional 15 yards caused a missed field goal at the end of the game, the loss would have been squarely on Richie Incognito. He obviously dosen't grasp that in team sports the good of the team has to come ahead of his personal issues. He's been doing things like this far too long for anyone to think he's going to change. Why is he still here?
Jeff Gordon: Because he can block. When he was out of the lineup last year, the middle of the Rams offensive line wasn't nearly as good.

James Arnold: is the sky falling in columbia? a game that mizzou should have won, was lost. not going for it on 4th and 1, settling for 3, missed FG, those are the 7 points missing to victory. However, mizzou still had an opportunity to win late in 4th but the play calling was suspect, did mizzou in your opinion get out coached? assess the chances of bouncing back against texas, finally, does mizzou have to run the table to have a shot of national game? or is it cotton bowl again this season?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Tigers will have to run the table to have a chance at the national title -- unless Penn State collapses. The Nittany Lions are set up to the reach the title game. The SEC and Big 12 teams are beating each other up.

OSU was very well-coached. Gundy went over, sat on a table and drew up his next drive while Mizzou was scoring. Then Cowboys went out and scored with a couple of well-executed players. Good for them.

rogerramjet: Hi Gordo,
I am a first time writer here, and a long time ram fan who now lives in Ca. I new a little leadership would go a long way," and it did".

I saw a post on the Raiders that they were going to unload Vargus or Bush, would these guys be a good trade prospective for the Rams, and can we entertain this at all? Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: Trade for a running back? If Leonard's shoulder is out, that is a problem because Pittman is done for a while. That leaves Minor. So something must happen.

cracengl: Mister Gordo,

Does the recently reported clause about Coach Haslett being retained with a .500 record change anything we've heard about the front office situation? I think if he takes the team to at least 6 wins, we would want to keep him. But what are the chances that such a move would scare away a potential candidate for VP or GM? You could cite a similar situation to this with the Cardinals GM search; TLR was already in place as the manager. Obviously, the Cards are an all around better team and organization, but wouldn't a top of the organization guy want to pick his own head coach?
Jeff Gordon: Depends what Chip is looking for. If this team plays well for Haslett, then he and Devaney would have a case for running the football side. That would lessen the need for a president with his hands on the football side. But there is a long way to go yet.

Steve Brower: With the Cardinals interest in Rafael Fuecal. I’m concerned about character issues. When he played for the Braves, he didn’t have the best reputation and had some brushes with Law Enforcement. Do we need to pay big money for a guy who wasn’t a fan favorite in Atlanta?
Jeff Gordon: His high price tag and this year's injury would be a bigger concern than anything. I expect the Dodgers to keep him, but we'll see. Torre is fine with him and Cox got big mileage out of him.

Todd W.: Hey Gordo,
What are you expecting with the Pace injury?

Also, I watched the game, and recorded it. Bulger stood tall in the pocket, and looked more poised yesterday. Made some critical 3rd down passes that we needed, and rolled out extending the big play so Avery could make a play. Give him some credit.

Thanks
Todd W.
Jeff Gordon: His earlier completion to Avery was even more impressive, given the small window he had to throw into. So he salvaged them game after lots of rough moments. As for Pace, we'll know more in a few hours.

Steve (Roch. NY): Gordo,

What's the latest on Fakir Brown? I heard he was going to be signed today. Is the team looking at bringing in any other corners?
Jeff Gordon: Brown would replace Williams, but the Rams could use another guy just in case. That, or get Stanley ready. He played a bit of CB in training camp.

woodstown@excite.com: Gordo-

I'm curious about what your impressions are of the Blues' D after 2 games... To me, a couple of the veterans are playing exactly the way they played last year and one of the rookies has seriously regressed. I think Petro's making a case to stay, already.

I never thought I'd really miss Woywitka!
Jeff Gordon: The first quarter in New York -- not good. To me, the most important thing Murray must do is get Brewer, Jackman and McKee playing sound. For the most part, they achieved that during the opener.

Mike: Gordo,
Is it your opinion that Pinkel simply got out-coached on Saturday? Why, with the nation's most potent offense, do you settle for a field goal at the one yard line on the opening drive?
Jeff Gordon: I questioned that at the time on my game day blog. And, sure enough, it set the wrong tone for the game.

The Goat: Gordo,

I knew when Pinkel didn't try and punch it in on their first series from the 1 yard line they were done, what a wuss. Would you have been a wuss or a man?
Nice to see the Rams get in the win column.
Who's the quarterback leading the 1st place team in our division?
What's the latest on Darius Miles?
Will the Billikens be over .500 this year?
Thanks a lot..
Jeff Gordon: SLU will be over .500. Kurt Warner is The Man. Pinkel should have gone for it, to send a message that Mizzou was going to attack from start to finish. Why this team doesn't let Daniel line up behind the center on extreme short yardage plays is a mystery.

Lawarence Marmie: I still don't get why it's so important to have a headcase like Incognito starting on the offensive line- it's not like Jackson has gaping holes with him in there or Bulger has anymore time to throw if he's starting. The offensive line is terrible with or without him in there- we just don't rack up as many 15 yds penalties in critical situations if he's riding the pine. He had two yesterday and was lucky that the refs only saw the retaliation by the Redskins or would have had three. This is not a good enough team to keep overcoming his utter stupidity. If Brown misses that kick- this team could have completely fallen apart and given up for the rest of the year. There's smashmouth players and then there's complete morons and he falls into the latter category. Time to give up on lil' Richie- let him take out his roid rages on some other team's line that doesn't care if they keep getting pushed further downfield.
Jeff Gordon: Understand the sentiment totally . . . but I'm more concerned about the players who don't care enough. Take care of that, then worry about the hotheads.

Frank Wild: Jeff
While I was pleased and surprised by the Rams yesterdays I am embarrassed to admit that the team that has really impressed me is the Big Red. I could see them going five and four the rest of the way and winning the division easily. While it causes me great consternation to root for a Bidwell club I can't help but root for Kurt Warner. If Warner can get another perenial loser franchise into the playoffs and get his career yardage up to thirty thousand yards do you think he can make it to the hall of fame? In hindsight should the Rams have stuck with Warner or do you think he needed the change to get his career started again?
Jeff Gordon: If he gets to the Pro Bowl and get Arizona into the postseason, his case for Canton becomes better. He might need one more year like it, though.

Fletcher: Although I think Mart S. is better suited to turn this organization into a legit contender. My hat really goes off to those Rams and especially Mr. Haslett. I live in Baltimore and I went to the game and boy it was tough coming through those doors. I was cheering and talkn'n stuff in line and at my seat and boy the 1st 10 min of the 1st quarter. Whew! Those Hogs where feasting on me. But by the days end, My RAMS reminded me why I stick by them. You could tell the attitude of the team was "We can do this" For so long it seemed as if we had talent and lacked coaching and confidence. Yesterday it was the other way around. We still cant stop the run (need bigger, imposing MLB) and we still can't run. (need another RB to make S.J. steo up and prove worth) If we had a running game yesterday would not have come down to the wire. Oh give D.Hall some props, he finally earned his check. Thank You RAMS I can stand proud for at least 1 week........We beat the Deadskins in their house!!
Jeff Gordon: How about Dante Hall? Definitely extended his career here. That was big. Don't bang on Jackson too much, because he isn't getting much room to run.

MU=overrated?: Do you think Mizzou's recent loss to OK State, at home, was reflective more of bad play, being outplayed, or that Missouri was just a little overrated? Where do you think Mizzou will realistically fit in the national landscape?
Jeff Gordon: Right now, Mizzou looks overrated. All that can change Saturday. It's up to the Tigers to prove otherwise.

Griff21: This early in the season do you think its a good idea to shuffle the lines? with Lee missing some time would it make more sense to put McClement with boyes & mcdonald for just a few games, rather than shuffle the rest of the of the lines while they are still building chemistry?
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather put a sturdy power forward -- even Porter --with Boyes and McDonald and leave the Kariya line alone.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Any word on Carpenter's timeline this winter? When will we start to find out whether or not we can rely on him in '09? In other words, will we find out that he's out until July after every capable replacement has signed elsewhere?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will know more in January, when Carpenter is (or isn't) in his throwing program. Then the team can add (or not add) another veteran. As next season progresses, the team should have young hurlers ready to step up.

Steve Brower: Is it possible to post the 1989 Sports Illustrated article titled “The Cardinal Way”, featuring George Kissell? I’m sure other Fans would like to read it also.
Jeff Gordon: I will look at linking to that in my Tipsheet. Look for there for it.

Joe S: Do the Cards have any interest in FA Cristian Guzman? Good bat, some speed and adequate defense at SS. Still only 30 and could give us what we need for 3 yrs. Hit .316 last year. How much woould it take to sign him?
Jeff Gordon: Guzman got an extension from the Nationals, so he is off the market.

Griff21: Whats you take on the new policy that teams don't need to to release injury info on nhl players? does this have anything to do with patient privacy rules, like hipaa or something?
Jeff Gordon: It's more about protecting players for further injuries. Opponents do target wounded players, believe it or not.

john: What do you think about the tuck rule and how it affected the cards/cowboys game?
Jeff Gordon: Not a fan of the tuck rule.

JJBrock: Transplant from St. Louis living in Fairfax County VA - my boys (12, 10) and I were in Section 219 at FedEx Field yesterday in our Rams gear. What a day - to say the Redskin fans were stunned is an understatement.

The Ram defense played with heart, bending but not breaking (enough cliches for you?). Do you think they can keep it going vs. Dallas - especially given the fact that it looks like Romo is out and Brad Johnson is in this week?

What's the word on getting Fakhir Brown back?

Thanks

John

Centreville, VA

Jeff Gordon: Yeah, how about Tony Romo's injury? Might the Rams have a chance to string together wins?

Dustmann: El Grande Gordito:

Que pasa, thank you for your time! Any rumblings of Luddy being moved in a Volquez/Hamilton type deal for a young horse? VEB is suggesting using Skippy to get Zobrist from the Rays, what do you think? Are there any other young viable SS available by trade? Any chance we see Glaus moved for prospects and Rasmus and Wallace in the Show by midseason? Muchas Gracias!
Jeff Gordon: Does Ludwick have that kind of value? Not sure. Touched on the Zobrist suggestion, which seems viable. As for moving Glaus, nah, he is too steady. He's a good Cardinal. Maybe the team extends him and moves Wallace and/or Freese for pitching help.

SoundwaveSTL: Jeff,

I must apologize for doubting you and your insight about Haslett, apprently he is the fire that we needed to start things in motion (plus him getting into it with the Redskin's player definatly moved him up a notch in my book). Not that other things don't need attention(but thats another story), but for the most part i was very impressed by this "new" Rams team. So now the question is what can we expect this coming sunday? The Rams now have that taste of victory, and the Cowboys now looking to get the taste back after being upset by the Cardinals in a very good game. I think its going to be another hard battle in front of us. Do you think that we're going to able to play another tough, or possibly a even tougher 4 quarters then the game before? What do you expect? Any insights on adjustments that the Rams are taking to put more pressure on Romo and keep TO in check?

Go RAMS!

-SoundwaveSTL
Jeff Gordon: Tony who? Romo is out the game with a broken finger. That will help with T.O.

RepubloCrat: Gordo, What's your prediction for where the Blues will end up this year? Are the kids ready to take this team into the palyoffs past the first round?
Jeff Gordon: Not yet, but this team will last for most of the season. Not off to a good start in Toronto, though.

Entreri10: hey jeff,

love the chats, do you know of any other possible DBs that the rams may bring in if brown's agent continues on like this, also how's carriker doing out there he seems like sort of a nonfactor so far?

Thanks,
Dennis
Jeff Gordon: Carriker hasn't made too many great individual plays, but he was part of a sturdy effort Sunday. That looked like a big physical mismatch. The Rams need Brown -- the other guys on the street aren't great.

steve brawner: I think that for the first time this season, the Rams yesterday had two things that they haven't had in any of the four losses. First was luck. They flat got the bounce on some of the plays. They hadn't had many breaks in the other games. Secondly, I think that this is the first time that they played with emotion. They have been sleepwalking all year.

As for Mizzou, they came out looking tight and never got over it. OSU looked like the team with confidence, and with good cause. They will give TX,OU and TTU all or more than they can handle.

Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: OSU played like it had nothing to lose. The Tigers played like they had everything to lose. There you go.

Rafay: Gordo-

What's the update on Orlando Pace's injury? I read that he pulled his quads on Sunday. Is he expected to play Sunday vs. the Cowboys?
Jeff Gordon: We'll know more in a couple of hours.

Griff21: How much longer til we start seeing Hinote and King back in the line up? hopefully with them back we can see less and less of Janssen. I never liked that guy, even if he is a local kid. Of all the trade blunders the team has made, trading a solid veteran Dman( salvador) for Jansen has to be ranked near the top.
Jeff Gordon: The Blues weren't going to sign Salvador for four years and $16 million.

NV Cards fan: Hi Gordo,
I thought that Larue was a great backup catcher this year, and he seems to have a great attitude about being one. Are the Cards likely to bring him back? Also saw that Yadi's father passed away, how sad for the Molina brothers. My condolences are with them.
Jeff Gordon: Jason is a great Cardinal, which makes Anderson expendable. Bryan is a nice hitter, but Yadi is not going anywhere.

Griff21: Is there a new promotion where after scoring 5 goals we get free DQ blizzards or at least tacos again? there was some mention of it however I haven't heard anything else on it.
Jeff Gordon: There are going to do tacos again, at Scottrade the next day.

Eric P: Hey Jeff,
Is the problem with the Rams conditioning? The defense had to play half the game and looked exhausted at the end. These are professional athletes and they can't play a kids game fo 60 minutes? Make them do super laps like we got punished with in high school or something.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, Haslett has been making them run extra to get in better shape.

DisCard: I don’t get the extremely high evaluation of Anderson. He has a decent BA, but a low RBI total and is medium at best as a defensive catcher. I know catchers are tough to come by, but if he was the key to getting Fuentes, I don’t follow, do you? The Cards success in re-signing people seems to improve if they bring them to the roster first, though I know there have been notable exceptions.

Secondly, I keep hearing about getting a bat to protect Pujols. Looking at Ludwick’s numbers, if they don’t do it what will? Holliday’s numbers on the road are not that impressive and the price would be excessive, as would the other names I’ve heard. Unless Lou Gehrig rises from the dead, I’m at a loss how to satisfy this TLR request. Isn’t it more likely that Pujols and TLR just must come to realize that Babe Ruth is among the career leaders in walks?
Jeff Gordon: Matt has a better track record, obvious, and more presence. But for Pujols money long term, I'm not excited about him -- the team has other OFs on the rise. Spend the money elsewhere.

Dealing Anderson makes sense for lots of reasons.

Rambunctious: Hi Jeff,
What is the latest news on Fakir Brown? Is he destined to become a Ram again soon?

Will the Rams bring back Lance Ball now that both Pittman and Leonard are out, or has another team signed him? Is there a question as to whether or not we need to bring in another rb?

Lastly, what is the situation with Orlando Pace? Is he expected to miss next week's game? Thanks in advance!!
Jeff Gordon: I liked Ball. He ran very well. Could be an option. We'll see about Brown and Pace.

MonkeyLooker: Tory Holt looked scared to death out there Sunday and cannot get any separation anymore - see if KC will take Holt for Gonzalez straight up. Tony G. would be a great addition at TE to go along with our 2 rookie wide outs. With Romo out & Brad Johnson at QB I like our chances Sunday. Go Rams!
Jeff Gordon: Except that Holt would just leave once his contract expires. So K.C. is looking for a pick.

Griff21: obviously the cards need lots of players, particularly pitchers. but arguably the most important position is catcher. While not the flashiest player I have a great deal of respect for Larue & would like to see him as a backup again for a few more years. Anderson tho is young & coming up. how do you see this playing out over the next year or 2 ?
Jeff Gordon: Yadier is the man, so Anderson isn't likely to stick. Jason is a more classic back-up.

Bill: Hello Jeff, where's Al Michaels when you need him. An unbelievable win yesterday gives hope the Rams can still salvage this year. All of a sudden I was rooting for the Cowboys to win yesterday. I wanted to get your take on Bulger and the offense yesterday. I've been down on Baby Bulger lately but I did get the impression yesterday that he had his head in the game and he finally showed a little moxie on that game ending winning drive. Something we rarely see, but heck, he only had 93 yards passing before the Avery catch, and I loved the Rams going with different formations and mixing it up with motion and everything, but Bulger rarely threw the ball downfield. Especially over the middle. and there were a couple throws that were uncalled for. I mean it looks like the Rams have a chance to be competitive now and Bulger needs to find himself quickly if the Rams are going to capitalize on their new fresh outlook. what's your take on the offense yesterday? thanks
Jeff Gordon: The offense has to get better, that's for sure. That wasn't good enough to win most games.

BrettB: I know TJ Oshie hasn't produced points yet, but he's obviously the best rookie the Blues have. Do you think the Blues will get help from the media, and spotlight these great rookies into serious Calder Trophy candidates?? Like Chicago did for Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane last year?
Jeff Gordon: If they produce, they will get the attention. John Davidson is well liked.

PaddyM: After what we saw this weekend, how much trouble is Mizzou in going into Texas? How do you think we match up?
Jeff Gordon: Touch match-up. The Tigers can't turn the ball over or take bad penalties, period. And they have to throw it downfield. Get back to playing Mizzou football.

Austin: any chance we'll acquire Peavy?????
Jeff Gordon: Without moving Wainwright, it would be tough.

Gary Nguyen: Jeff,
What's up with the Rams Interior Line? There's no push on run plays or protection on pass plays. Why not promote the rookies, Greco and Schuening who are better than Incognito and Pace? If the Rams draft these rookies, why not use them? They are better than what the current offensive linemen on the active roster.
Jeff Gordon: If the rookies were better, they would play, believe me. The fans looking to dump Richie have to realize that. Next year could be different.

ramsfan: Shaun Alexander to back up SJAX???
Jeff Gordon: Well, it appears they need somebody. Shaun tried out for the Lions; I don't know how he looked.

cbensinger: After the near disaster at the end of the AZ/Dallas game with the timeout negating the blocked field goal do you think maybe that last second timeout call strategy might've finally ran it's course?
Jeff Gordon: Let's hope so. This isn't high school. These guys are NFL kickers. If anything, timeouts allow them to gather themselves.

john Hardiman: If I was going to pick one free agent pitcher whose performance could materially improve over a period of years and should not cost crazy money, it would be Oliver Perez. His hits and strikeouts to innings pitched has been impressive throughout his career, he's still young, and his w/l noticeably improved when he got to a good team. He strikes me as the most affordable potential impact player on the market. I'd like Fuentes but left-handed relief is simply not as crtical a position. No way Cards pony-up for Furcal type money in my lifetime.

Any chance?
Jeff Gordon: He would be exactly the type of guy Duncan would love. He could win 18 to 20 here. But the New York team will drive up the prices on these guys.

Kevin O'Brien: Why is Pinkel so reluctant to throw the ball deep? It seems Mizzou loves to use the short pass, but if they would go deep every once in a while, I think it would open it up the field more and enable Daniel to throw shorter routes in less traffic. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: A lot of that is the D that Daniel is looking at, what reads he is making. Having said that, establishing the vertical game has to be a priority.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

My earlier point was if they trade Skip under the presumption that Rasmus is the man, and Colby fails. Then we move Ras into the 6 or 7 hole and have no leadoff man. My wording was confusing, thanks for the answers.
Jeff Gordon: Sorry 'bout that. Rasmus could fail in the leadoff, true. That might be a lot to put on him. In that case, either the @B or SS would have to take over. TLR likes power at leadoff, so Colby could be that guy eventually.

Griff21: Lopez was HOT the short while we had him, but i'm not prepared to hand him a starting role just yet. Furcal & Renteria while potentially is a huge offensive boost but age, cost, & health issues are a major concern. however both are sketchy defensively Lopez has a career .979 fpct @ second and worse at ss. Renteria and Furcal have lower percentages @ short. & don't say we have lots of money to spend because of the 30M coming off the books, 5 already went to Lohse, 10 will be needed for another starter, new contracts to Ankiel & Ludwick, Plus built in raises to everybody else, leaves you with not a lot to invest up the middle.
Jeff Gordon: Which is why the team may go the trade route.

NewGovt/NewAmerica: Hope this question hasn't already been asked, but with all of the injuries to Ram players yesterday (most notably RB and DB) will the Rams be able to add free agents to their roster or possibly pull off some trades before the deadline?
Jeff Gordon: Trades are iffy. Free agents, for sure, the Rams will be kicking some tires this week.

PJW: Dan,

Is the Edward Jones Dome paid for?
Thanks,
PJW
Jeff Gordon: Largely -- those where long-term bonds. I'm not sure of all the specifics.

Rambunctious: When you made this comment, did you mean Manning? Who's Williams?

Jeff Gordon: What choice do the Rams have, after losing Williams?
Jeff Gordon: Ah, yes, Manning is out. Sad, too, because he was making an impact as the inside CB.

Rich: Hey Gordo,

Do you see the Rams caving into Brown's demands?

I realize they Rams are in a tight spot at CB and although they lucked out with Manning and Craft, they really aren't many options out there right now.

Thanks for these chats
Jeff Gordon: What choice do the Rams have, after losing Manning?

Lawarence Marmie: I've given up wanting to be a writer for the St. Louis Post Dispatch- now I just want to move to someplace simple like Montana and become a professional monkeyrancher. Just me on the plains with my army of primates plotting and training for world domination... I mean herding monkeys across the plains for completely peaceful and environmental purposes. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like fun!

Joe Stafford: Jeff, is Fakier Brown back in contract talks yet? Looks like Loserhand just made mon lots of money this year.
Jeff Gordon: Yes he did. Fakhir should send him a fruit basket.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, any news on Dane Looker yet? I hope those Doc's are just seeing things.
Jeff Gordon: I hope so, too, because this is scary stuff.

Lawarence Marmie: Any chance we trade for Travis Fisher?
Jeff Gordon: The memories!

George Geofferson: Hey Gordo-
Great win yesterday! As a transplanted New York Jets fan living in STL the last 8, I have become a diehard Rams fan. My question for you is that with Klops inability to even play the TE position effectively, and with the newly acquired TE Daniel Fells (sp?) still learning the playbook...has there been any discussion to maybe try Anthony Becht as the starting TE? What are your thoughts on this? When he was with the Jets as a 1st rd pick, he was always reliable with his hands, physical, and a threat to score in the red zone along with his great blocking. It just seems that even though he was brought here for his blocking skills, he would have the most familiarity with the playbook having gone through training camp and I also recall an article over the summer stating Becht and Bulger played college ball together and were pretty good friends? Seems to make sense to me, your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Becht is a great blocker, but not the best downfield receiver. That is why Al is going with more multiple wideouts.

Griff21: I'd rather see Salvador as a blue (4M a year is mighty high for him) but between Sal and jacks, I'd rather see Sal as a blue. he was a much better, steady Dman.
Jeff Gordon: I can't debate that.

richard rossberg: Wow was that a dream? Look at the stats we got KILLED but that's football! I can remember many many times when we won the battle yet lost the game. It really is alot about attitude!Question is do I dare get my hopes up? Forget it, I already do!!!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have lost them the other way, so the team was due some luck.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, any truth that if Haslett wins 6 games he is the coach next year? Heck if he wins 6 games after this mess he got he should be coach of the year!
Jeff Gordon: Six wins? Yeah, that would probably do it.

BobJMc13: Jeff
When I remember, I like reading this live.
Not a great win, but sure was a fun win. Special teams and defense (2 out of 3 ain't bad) did a nice job.

But, my big complaint is Marc Bulger not being able to throw an effective long ball, and his tendency to throw the short passes to the back hip of the intended receivers. The long pass not being part of the game has to make the opponent's defense job a little easier. I wonder if he has simply lost it. Also, I like Carriker, but I just don't think he is big enough for the big body needed as the nose tackle.
Jeff Gordon: Bulger had a hand injury which limited him late in that game, but there isn't much excuse for the short passing inaccuracy.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, is Torry Holt starting to accept Donnie Avery yet and starting to help him along? What is up with Drew Bennett? Is he ever going to contribute to this team?
Jeff Gordon: Bennett? I'll believe it when I see it. Holt has to like Avery and I'm sure the rapport is building. Avery is a good learner.

Petey123: How many Cowboys fans do you expect at the dome Sunday?
Jeff Gordon: 10,000 to 15,000

Lawarence Marmie: It was nice to see the Bears losing in heartbreaking fashion yesterday. God, I hate the lovie smith. Every time I see him, I remember him standing with that utter look of cluelessness blanketed across his face as the Patriots marched easily downfield against his prevent defense in the Superbowl to kick that winning field goal. God, I hate that lovie smith.
Jeff Gordon: Dude, you've got to let that go.

Joe Stafford: Jeff, what would the cap ramifications be if the Rams just cut Bennett? He was Loserhands boy anyway, and he hasn't done diddly squat for this team in the way of contributions.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe give him one more shot, but he was definitely Linehan's guy and he hasn't done a thing. Injuries are a tough deal, but come on.

brian: True or false.......The Billikens will at least make the NIT?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, I think they can do that. Majerus had a heck of a recruiting class.

Jake: Jim, thank you for taking our questions you're doing a great service for the Rams community.

Looking to next weeks game how do you see the Dallas game playing out? Also with Manning’s season ending injury and F. Browns situation still being unknown; who do you see (or hear about) coming aboard and filling in the empty roster spot?
Jeff Gordon: We'll know more in an hour. I've gotta to run out to the Rams news conference now.

See you next week!
