Kevin Weber: Can you explain how the Perron situation works? I know the game limit in the NHL and everything. My question is why couldn't he just go to the AHL instead of somewhere else?
Jeff Gordon: That is part of the NHL's deal with major junior hockey. Players in their last regular year of eligibility have to play in the NHL or back at the major junior level. This prevents the NHL from plundering the major junior ranks and loading up their AHL teams with 18- and 19-year-olds. The NHL would rather have these kids developing under their own coaches . . . but on the other hand, it allows them to store kids for a year without starting their NHL contract clock. If the Blues send Perron back to major junior hockey, free agency would arrive for him a year later than if he stayed in the NHL this year. That is a big consideration for high-end players.
Kevin Weber: Do you think Jose Guillen would fit the role of a guy that the cardinals would look to add for the power hitting outfielder role they are looking for?
Jeff Gordon: Guillen would be a classic La Russa project. Tony would rely on veterans (hello, Albert!) to keep the guy reeled in. He would also play the heck out of the guy, as long as he paid attention to the details. Tony treats players like men and expect them to do their job. If they fail to go about their business the right way, then they find themselves on the bench -- often without explanation. Tony is not a hand-holder. Either a guy gets it or he doesn't..
tim: Would the Cards possibly move Rasmus to a corner spot in the outfield whenever he comes up and go after Rowand in Free Agency this offseason? Will the Cards even go after Rowand either way?
Jeff Gordon: The Edmonds/Rasmus transition makes too much sense, especially with Ankiel also in the mix. As attractive as Rowand is, he doesn't look like a great fit here. If I'm him, I'm targeting a team desperately needing a CF for the next five or six years.
tim: I know you have probably been asked this alot but I gotta know, what are the chances Renteria wheres a Cardinal jersey next season?
Jeff Gordon: Tony would love to go there, but it's tough to say where the new Atlanta administration is headed. In the old days. Jocketty and Schuerholz might have worked out a mutally beneficial deal -- as they did in the case of Drew.
tim: Do you think the Cards will end up getting Willis or Garland? My opinion, I think the Cards are going to get one of them.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have enough to deal to get one pitcher of that caliber. In fact, they almost HAVE to make that deal to move surplus OF assets and do something with Anthony Reyes.
