Tim: Would it be possible to include a peavy Deal without involving Rasmus, Perez, Wainwright, or Motte? I Know it would be tough but look at the prospects we have and the MLB ready players. How about a deal that looks like this.
Wallace- I stll would love to see him at third but if their that worried about his range and that high on Freese. His bat will make him a key part to the trade
Mortenson and/or Todd-We would have Peavy Lohse Wainwright and hopefully Carpinter locked up for a few years so our starting pitching prospects could be more expendable than some of our position player
Anderson-one word to size it up. MOLINA
Daryl Jones- We have alot of OF so somethings gotta give and hes a nice prospect
If that isnt enough you got Schumaker that boosted his stock bigtime this season, Kozma who could be a replacement for Greene if hes involved and other pretty good prospects. what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: It may not be possible to make this deal happen without Wainwright. But if I'm the Padres, I want a top starting pitching prospect, one of the hard-throwing relievers and Rasmus. This is Jake Peavy, a Top 5 pitcher under contract for terms the Cards can handle.
I'm intrigued by the Greene factor, since taking him and his $6.5 million in a bigger deal could give the Cards an advantage.
Tim: So the Pujols whats the deal with it, is it supposed to help the problem with his elbow that would delay the surgery more , hopefully correct it so he wont need the big surgery, or is it just a complety different matter and we still should be very worried?
Jeff Gordon: This minor surgery was nerve-related. It had nothing to do with the torn ligament. It is a non-issue, really.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
The Cards have one more year committed to Troy Glaus, but they also have three 3B prospects with seemingly well-above-average bats - David Freese, Brett Wallace, and Allen Craig. Freese and Wallace both continue to play this fall, Freese in Venezuela and Wallace in Arizona.
My question ... why not let Freese and Wallace try their hand at 2B during their fall season stays, just to see if there's any possibilities there? It's been well documented that the Cards have a need for middle infielders with offensive production.
And since Freese played at Triple-A Memphis this past season, one would assume he's major league-ready. Why not make room for him in St. Louis next season by moving him to 2B? That seems like it could solve half of the middle-infield puzzle if Freese could play 2B.
In the meantime, Wallace and Craig can continue their minor league apprenticeships next season. By the end of 2009, the Cards should be in a good position to decide whether they try to re-sign Glaus, let him head to free agency (and get a supplemental draft pick), or maybe even trade him in July to a team looking for a rental 3B. If the latter were to happen, Wallace or Craig could be ready to move up to St. Louis.
I mean, converting players to second basemen has been done before. The one that sticks out in my mind most was when the Houston Astros converted their catcher to 2B. How did that turn out? Well, it seems that Craig Biggio morphed into an All-Star second baseman who probably will end up in the Hall of Fame.
Thanks for posting.
Jeff Gordon: Wallace can barely move well enough to play a passable third base. He cannot play second. Freese would be a reach there as well. Biggio is a rare athlete, since he could also move out to center field.
The Cards could resolve the 3B surplus by making a deal. Lopez could be viable at 2B, if all else fails.
Jayman: With the Cardinals holding the line at 100 million a year on their budget, arent they at risk at being competitive each passing year that the do this. Whith raises, free agent signings theres no way 5 years from now they can stay into the race. I think it should be 112 million a year this year! Also I saw one of those Coors commercial where the fans ask different coaches from the past about Coors beer at their post game press briefs and I was wandering if you think that Tony would make a good candidate for that commercial!!
Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure Tony would go for it, but, yes, he is one of the baseball managers who would be classic in that spot.
The Cards payroll will keep trending up. Could DeWitt afford $112 million? Sure, although the club make take a revenue hit next season due to the economy. Not even the Cards are recession-proof.
mr. optomist: its halftime gordo..so far what a game!!!..i'm puttin it in the books as a win...what has been the difference since Haslett got the job?...it can't all be emotion...is it?
Jeff Gordon: Well, actually, yes it could be.
Tim: What kind of deals in terms of how much and how long are you looking at with Ludwick and Ankiel?
Jeff Gordon: I'm thinking $6 million or $7 million a year is a reasonable range. Three or four years would be a good range of length. Ankiel may dream of getting a Torii Hunter Contract, but I don't see that happening.
Tackleberry: Any Cards fan would be elated to see Peavy in red next year, but is that what we really need? I would think, even with Carpenter's status is flux, that starting pitching would be third on the list of needs. The bullpen has major issues, obviously, but a consistent #4 hitter still seems to trump any starting pitching need. The guys that currently insulate Pujols in the line-up are nothing if not inconsistent, or streaky for the positive spin. If we were going to part with Rasmus I'd rather get a hitter in return, not trade for Peavy and sign an over-the-hill Renteria and re-up an even streakier Lopez.
Jeff Gordon: Pitching always trumps hitting. The better your pitching, the easier everything else becomes.
The offense isn't far off. Yes, it was streaky. But remember, Ankiel played hurt for a chunk of last season and then shut down. What if the Cards had Ludwick, Ankiel, Lopez and Molina for all of last season, plus Mather on the bench all season? That would have been a better offense. What if the team finds 40 to 50 more RBI at shortstop?
Tim: I just dont see why the people would want Cards would throw out big money to Fuentes and lose out on someone like Furcal or Cabrera. DOnt get me wrong i like Fuentes but it just doesnt make sense to me heres why.
You can get alot more out of Furcal( everyday player, leadoff hitter, gret aveage, 30-40 SB, great glove etc) than you could with Fuentes(relief pitcher)
there is alot of FA LHR out in free agency( Affdelt, Ohman) who we can sign to much Cheaper deals and had good seasons and get good production out of)
Perez is going to be an outstanding closer he just needs to adjust major league wise in that role so if were not going to throw out money for a starting CF because of Rasmus how is it any different with a closer.
Do you somewhat agree with my points or am I not seeing something?
Is it possible that with salary dumps(Kennedy, Piniero) it could give more room to sign both Furcal and Fuentes?
Jeff Gordon: Pineiro offers valuable pitching depth. You can never have too much of that. He wasn't great last year, but he wasn't all that far off. I would keep him. Dumping Kennedy, if that is even possible, doesn't save enough to make a huge difference.
There are a zillion lefties out there. The Cards already added one of them. But Fuentes is a closer-caliber lefty. They are extremely rare. He would be a great guy to pair with Perez.
Furcal would change the offense, but I see the Dodgers keeping him. And Cabrera could exploit the current shortstop shortage and get overpaid.
Tackleberry: Is there a concern with chase Daniel's arm strength? I know that under-throwing the receiver is a technique used to create space or draw the interference call, but last night Maclin had a step on the corner more than once and had to either slow down or come back for the ball. Was that on purpose every time? If so, Daniel needs to recognize the separation and lead Maclin.
Jeff Gordon: The arm strength issue is more evident on those routes where the ball must be gunned into a small space. That is what NFL scouts want to see, as well as whether he can become a drop-back passer at his size. Those are the make-or-break issues.
Tim: Any talks progressing or anything at all with Lopez? Id like to see him as starting 2B?
Could Izturis come back for a backup role?
Jeff Gordon: If the Cards get a real shortstop, then Miles would be fine as the back-up. Or Ryan. Or Greene, who is grooming himself to become a utility player. Why put a useless hitter on the bench?
smackuprams: someone ask about the cowboys blues jersys.it used to be a jinx thing to make them wear ther home jersys....it work...lol
Jeff Gordon: Jersey color was the least of the Dallas problems Sunday.
Tim: Is there any truth to this rumor im hearing about a Peavy and Greene for prospects deal being almost done? I dont understand why greene would be included. How is he an offensive upgrade? Im a huge fan of Furcal and would rather see that. Anyway its probably not true but was just wondering.
Jeff Gordon: Greene hit 27 homers two years ago and is a good bet for 15 HR and 60 RBI a year. That beats getting a couple of homers and 30 RBI out of that position. He is a bit of a gamble coming off a tough year, but then again he won't command $15 million a year on his next deal, like Rafael might.
Tim: When is Stempniak going to be back? Id love to see that stemp mcdonald boyes line pairing again especially the way the Blues have been rolling theyd be that much stronger.
Jeff Gordon: And Lee makes the power play better, too. This is not a serious injury, but there is no sense playing him until he is flying again.
Tim: If the Cards do get Peavy, do you see them shipping out more prospects and go after Brian Roberts? Im not thinking so but If Greene is involved in the deal we deffinutly need a better offensive 2B
Jeff Gordon: If the team takes on Peavy and Greene money, there will be no budget dollars for a high-priced second baseman.
Secret Sauce: Do you see Peavy in a cardinal uniform in 2009?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are one of four to five serious bidders. We'll see.
Tim: I was at work yesterday so I didnt watch the game but I saw that the Rams gave up 5 Sacks. Do you think te Rams might start mixing up their line a bit or just keep it as is and not screw up what they have going right now? Id like to see what Grecco and Scuening in there and see what they can do. What was the sarting line? Awesome job to Haslett and the rest of the Rams and keep it going
Jeff Gordon: Goldberg started for Pace, then it was Bell, Leckey, Incognito and Barron. The run blocking was exceptional. Haslett didn't like the sacks, but Bulger is immobile and Dallas has a nice pass rush. Overall, the line played well.
KY_CUB_KILLER: How serious of a pitch will the Cardinals make for Jake Peavy? Also do you think the Cards will resign Springer?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will make a serious pitch. As for Springer, if he wants to return, I would expect the Cards to sign him. He is a great fit here.
KY_CUB_KILLER: How much after the salary raises will the Cards have to spend on free agents? What will be spent and to what positions will it be spent on?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what trades the Cards make. There may be no money for big free agents after deals are made. There are a lot of ways to push the payroll past $100 million.
LA-Vegas Rams Fan: Gordo nice to see the Rams have life back in their playing. And to beat the Criminals is even better, this was a big win for the franchise hope we can keep it rolling. Would love to hand the Cheaters a loss next week and coach vcr.
Jeff Gordon: If Jackson is healthy, the Rams have a real shot up there.
mattmitchl44: Gordo,
You raised the subject of Khalil Greene in your Peavy article last Friday.
Greene is, in my opinion, an excellent trade target for three reasons: (1) he's been very good offensively away from Petco over his career (.800+ OPS most seasons), (2) he's a very good-to-outstanding defensive SS, and (3) if he doesn't work out, he's only signed for 2009 (at $6.5 million) so there's no long term committment.
Given that getting Peavy is at least unlikely, what do you think it would take to get Greene alone?
Jeff Gordon: Excellent question. I'm guessing the Cards could deal from their outfield and/or RH relief depth to get him. Greene alone, for one year, isn't all that attractive to most teams. But he could be a good bet here, since he could offer more SS offense even with a so-so season. And what if he blossoms?
fj: Do you think the Cards havve what it takes to trade for Jake Peavy? Who could they offer?
Jeff Gordon: They have enough to outbid anybody . . . but I don't see them going to the wall and offering Wainwright. That would be dumb. Their potential trade chips are some combination of Rasmus, Anderson, Schumaker, Wallace, Mather, Ryan, Motte, Todd, Mortensen, D.Jones, Stavinoha . . . you get the idea.
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
Thanks for taking my question, which is;
If the Padres are wanting to move Jake Peavy before Free Agents are eligible to sign with other teams, do you think the Cardinals would be in the hunt for him or does Carpenters "health question timeline",that answers his availability and will not be known until after Christmas, give them their excuse to not be aggressive and creative in going after Peavy?
Jeff Gordon: The Carpenter time line speaks to depth pitching, a No. 4 or No. 5 guy who could be waiting for offers, ala Lohse. Peavy is a star. Different category. The Cards have to consider that, regardless of whether Carpenter is a good or bad bet for next season. The only correlation is the large money owed Carpenter. Can the Cards have two %15 million-per-year starters in their rotation? That is the big question.
Mike: Alien abduction? What have they done with the Blues and Rams?
Jeff Gordon: How 'bout the Blues? Storming back to steal two points from Chicago -- that was most impressive.
Steve: If Wallace is really good enough to hit his way into the majors next year, why would we want to trade him, and extend Glaus? It’s my understanding that Glaus is better defensively, but unless you make a Bucker-Magnitude error, what’s the trade off for a full season between the two (Errors vs OPS for example).
If we let Wallace play 3rd at Memphis next year, what could we get in trade for Freeze and Anderson?
If we pick up Renteria for 09-10 would Kozma be ready in 11?
Please explain to me why we want to trade for Peavy? Wasn’t the last high end starter we traded for Mulder? Didn’t he spend time on the DL the year before we traded for him? Didn’t Peavy spend time on the DL last year? Also with all the emphasis on player development why are a going to trade the first group to show promise? I agree we need another front of the rotation starter, but I would rather see them sign Sabathia for three with a couple of options years than trade all the prospects.
Jeff Gordon: Sabathia won't sign for three years. Sabathia will set the all-time record for pitching contracts when he signs. Many years for nine digits.
Freese is a big-league caliber third baseman, so he would replace Glaus after next year if the team elects to spend its money elsewhere. Wallace could get by at third base, but he really needs to play first to become a DH.
Trading for Peavy would present the same risk that trading for Mulder did. Pitchers get hurt. They just do. But he is a team-changer, one of the few hurlers I'd want to see this franchise sacrifice youth for. The Cards have to at least take a look.
Kozma hasn't done enough at the plate to make him a can't-miss prospect. He may be just be an extra infielder. We'll see.
redbirdswin: What is your read on the value of David Freese vs. Brett Wallace? Who will be traded in the future, and who will become the future Cardinal 3B?
Jeff Gordon: I see Freese playing third here and Wallace eventually moving on as the next Daric Barton, a man without a position for this franchise.
Carooq: On Braden Looper.
The Cards made him a lot of money by turning him into a starter. He pitched well, almost equal to Lohse by some standards. He is from Oklahoma, grew up a Cards fan and started his career with the Cards. I would like to see him in a Cards uniform next year. Of course, the acquisition of a Peavy or Burnett or some other ace pitcher puts him in another uniform.
Some questions. How badly does he want to remain a Cardinal? Could a 2 year deal get him signed? Would he accept reasonable money? I think a Joel Pinero contract, 2 years at $9Million, would be fair. Will the Cards offer Arbitration? What would he be worth in arbitration? Will he wait long enough for the Cards to explore the other options they seem intent upon?
Second question. Baseball players are at the top of the heap among professional athletes and their investment savvy. How bad has the stock market collapse hurt the investment portfolio of the players? The owners? Will there be some players holding out for more money to restore their nest egg? Will owners sing the blues to try to pay less?
Jeff Gordon: The economic collapse hurts the net worth of many players, but they make lots of money. They will be able to keep buying stocks through the bottoming out, which will set them up for huge returns over the long haul.
The owners will lose revenues on all levels. Look for some scaling back as a result.
As for Looper, he will command more than Pineiro money on the open market. He is a solid fallback for the Cards.
DisCard: Thanks for helping keep baseball alive this off-season. The biggest hitting deficiency still seems to me to be against left-handed pitching. You are a Ludwick fan, as am I, but in actuality his numbers look more like he hits left-handed, though his OBP was solid both ways last season. Assuming Glaus is too streaky to be counted on to guard against left-handers, where do the Cards go to solve this problem? Mather is no sure thing. I don’t see a free agent signing that makes sense and would get the job done. Figuring the Cards would include Ankiel or Rasmus in the deal plus pitching, who would you target?
Jeff Gordon: Greene or Renteria wouldn't dramatically change that equation either, although either would help the offense overall. Same with Lopez for a whole year. Ludwick and Glaus figure to be the keys to that equation next year. I don't see a fix-all in free agency either.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
In my opinion, the Cardinals are sending the message that they truly believe they need a #1 or #2 starting pitcher and they are hoping Carpenter will be a bonus. I can't see them overpaying in free agency...that said, if they lose out on Peavy, do you think they will pursue a similar trade for another starting pitcher? If so, what are some of the names that might be out there via trade? They are obviously willing to move Rasmus in the right scenario. I cannot say that I'm an advocate of this with his upside and Peavy's arm action/injuries to be, but I think we have to make a deal for a reliable starting pitcher in case Piniero goes deep south again. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: It'll be interesting to see what happens in Seattle when that franchise picks a new GM. That team's payroll soared to $117 million last season and we saw how that worked out. Would that team deal Carlos Silva? Bedard, coming off shoulder surgery, could either become a free agent (if the Mariners don't tender him an offer) or go to arbitration one last time. Would he be a good bet? Never say never, given the dearth of potential high-end starters.
donald s box: Hey Gordo hows life treating you,I have a trade for you. Why not trade Motte and kennedy for jackson and zorbrist. Tampa needs a closer and we need a short stop with some pop .This helps both teams, and jackson is a young starter with a 14 and 11 record this year. We might have to throw in a nother pitcher, maybe himanez. Zobrist is a switch hiter and has some power. Jackson has been clocked at 99mph per hour, and has a good curve and slider.
Jeff Gordon: Zobrist is a good trade target, given his offensive potential. Maybe he could break out here as a regular. But why wouldn't the Rays look to lock Jackson up for a while? 14-game winners are tough to find.
Kyle Parnell: Hi Gordo,
Frequent reader, first time submitter. Does Jason Motte have what it takes physcially and number of pitches to be a candidate to be moved to starting rotation ala Braden Looper? It could help relieve the crowding in the pen, a candidate for 5th starter, or trade chip. Gotta love his fast ball...
Jeff Gordon: All he really has right now is a fastball. As a former catcher, he is still developing his finesse stuff. The bullpen is a great spot for him. McClellan is a better candidate to cross over to starting. He has more pitches.
therealdealankiel: The Padres are now saying they are looking for young pitching in return...who, besides Wainwright, would still make this deal fit? What is a reasonable package to offer SD? Is it possible to acquire him without including Rasmus?
I would guess the discussions begin and end with some combination of Perez, McClellan, Motte, Todd, Kinney, Boggs and Salas? Would that even be a competitive offer compared to what the Braves can offer (pitching-wise)?
Jeff Gordon: Excluding Wainwright, then Motte (or, gulp, Perez) along with Mortensen would be the best pure arms the team could offer. Boggs is likely viewed as a depth guy. Todd, maybe the Padres would like him, maybe not. He is built like a reliever. McClellan would have to offer value. If the Cards did get something done without moving Rasmus, that would the team take on the adding pitching salary -- since Colby would offer cheap, long-term offense in the outfield. That is a budget balancing option.
Luke in Dallas: What is up with Mizzou's defense? I went to the game in Austin on Saturday night, and I can honestly say that I have never seen a team I was cheering for get beat like the Tigers did. They basically are the same players on defense as last year.
Outside of Ziggy Hood, I don't think the Tigers have the defensive line to compete with the OU's and UT's of the world yet. They have the skill position players on offense, but they just don't have the "horses" up front.
Jeff Gordon: So it would seem. The Tigers played in big games last year and returned most of that "D" -- so most folks expected the unit to step forward this season. That was not the case, as you saw. They really got handled along the lines. To reach that top level, Mizzou still has to get bigger, faster and stronger.
Brett: Do the Cards have a legit shot at Peavy? If so, would it take Rasmus? Also, do you thimk the Cards will be a player for a big name FA, like K-Rod?
Jeff Gordon: K-Rod is a lot of money, with a large wear-and-tear risk. I'd rather take a shot with Perez and back him with Fuentes for more reasonable dough.
To get Peavy, the Cards would have to sacrifice young pitching, in quantity and quality. That is where it gets interesting.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Do you see Ryan Howard having a real chance for the NL MVP? Can an MVP winner really sport a .251 BAA?
AP's OBP% is 123 points higher, his SLG% is 110 points higher and his BAA is 106 points higher. The numbers he would put up with Rollins and Utley batting in front of him and Burrell and Victorino batting behind him would be disgusting! Not to mention the short porch at CBP...
Aside from Howard, who stands a real chance at stealing votes from AP? Do you think he will finally get credit for what he does, despite the fact that he is taken for granted outside of St. Louis?
Jeff Gordon: Gotta think Albert will get it, especially with the Cards finishing better at the end. He is overdue to get a few more of these awards. That will factor in, for sure.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What type of contract do you think Braden Looper will get and do you think he's worth that? Do you see the Cardinals re-signing him as injury protection or to compete with Piniero and Wellemeyer in camp?
Jeff Gordon: He will command more money than Pineiro, I believe, so if he comes back here, he will come back to the rotation without worrying about competition. Given his durability, three years and $24 million wouldn't be out of line in this pitching-starved market.
ric: Jeff: Why the sudden change in the Rams play? Was Linehan that bad and the players hated him so much they just tanked to get him canned? Is Haslett that good? I think the Rams may have a tougher assignment against the Pats as I believe the Skins and Cowboys both took the Rams to lightly.
Thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: The Patriots have the best coach. The Cowboys had a weak head coach. So right there is the challenge. Having said that, the Rams could beat New England if they don't turn the ball over and find way to get explosive plays -- as they did against a good Cowboys defense.
Kevin: Jeff,
If the Cards could add one from each of the following groups who would it be?
Starters: Peavy, Burnett, Buehrle, Oliver Perez, Jeff Weaver
Shortstops: Greene or Renteria
I think the Peavy stuff is just hype. Who in St. Louis is most responsible for buying the hype? Owners, fans, media? It gets kind of old hearing lofty ideas like this when they seldom...seldom...seldom happen.
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Peavy and Greene, as a package, would be the way to go. Separately, Perez and Renteria would be nice.
Well, Mozeliak made the Rolen-for-Glaus deal, which was large. And he moved Edmonds for a break-out third base prospect. DeWitt isn't afraid to acquire high-end players, as we've seen over the years with Rolen, Edmonds, Mulder and so forth. Why believe it could happen this time? The Cards have more trade chips than they have had in a long, long time. If the deal doesn't happen, it will be because the Cards decide not to sacrifice the young arms it would take.
But look for a big deal of some description, or several small ones. The Cards can't come back with the same group next spring because there is a glut out outfielders and too many of the same sort of prospects.
bob-n-weave: Hi Gordo, Thanks as always for hosting these chats. I want to start by congratulating Haz and the Rams for their win yesterday. I am impressed with the fire and intensity this team's playing with. I wanted to run a scenario by you: On Sunday, the Rams play New England, who will be coming off the short week with the MNF game tonight against a physical Broncos team. Supposing the Rams beat the Pats (which is possible, now!), and Carolina should beat the Cardinals, then the following week the Rams will be playing Arizona at the ED for FIRST place in the NFC West. To me this seems like a plausible scenario. Given the weaknesses of the West, what odds do you give these "New" Rams of making the playoffs this year???
Jeff Gordon: Arizona remains the team to beat. And Warner vs. the Rams will be grand theater. The good news: It appears the Rams will be competitive enough to force the issue and make this season fun after all.
Josh: Gordo,
Taking a quick peek at the remaining schedule:
@ New England
Arizona
@ NY Jets
@ San Fran
Chicago
Miami
@ Arizona
Seattle
San Fran
@ Atlanta
Is it not possible that the Rams go 9-7 or 10-6. Granted the Skins were overrated and I'm not sure how to judge after the Cowboys game. But, is it not possible for the Rams to beat NE, split the Arizona series, beat SF twice, beat Seattle, beat Miami, and then win 2 out of Chicago, the Jets, and Atlanta? I don't want to get ahead of ourselves here, but the playoffs could be a possibility especially in our weak division.
Jeff Gordon: All that is possible . . . but so are injuries. If Jackson couldn't play this week, for instance, the Rams would have no chance at New England. As we saw with the Romo-less Cowboys, one or two injuries destroy a team's edge.
IF the Rams stay healthy and get players like Pace, Pittman and Hill back, then they could stay in the hunt the rest of the season.
Fresno Ram Fan: No complaints today Gordo. Rams played a great game and all is good. One question? With the O-line playing pretty good w/out Pace, is that a sign that we no longer need him? Thnx. Go Rams!!!
Jeff Gordon: Let's not get carried away. But I'll say this: The team feels a lot better about Barron on the other side, which is really good news.
Brian: First off, I'm a huge Mizzou Fan.
But I think we learned something last week and this week against Texas, and that is Chase Daniel can't throw the deep ball. OSU and TX took away their short passes (where MU makes their living). My opinion is that if MU can't stretch the field with some long passes we might see a couple more L's before the season is over.
Jeff Gordon: But the Tigers have to protect in order to stretch the field with longer passes. Both OSU and UT applied steady pressure on Daniel when those games were on the line. So that has to change, too.
AlwaysAFan: All I can say is ... WOW. What a game. Is it time for all of us to jump on the Haslett bandwagon? He has done a great job in two games, but now we go to New England and we may not have Steven Jackson. Those two wins over NFC "power houses" speak for themselves. People on ESPN were joking around that the Rams should sign Haslett to a head coaching contract. In reality, do you think we should sign Haslett do a deal early or wait til the end of the season?
Jeff Gordon: The NFL would like the Rams to interview minority candidates before extending Haslett -- which is why the league wasn't excited about the reported "six-win" clause in Haslett's "interim" coaching contract.
bantam weight: Thanks for the chats Gordo.
Are the last two Rams games just a fluke (playing the Cowboys and the Skins at the right time) or can this team continue this type of effort and execution and end up 8-8? Without Jackson though we are probably toast.
Jeff Gordon: There are more wins left on the schedule, but, yes, any game that Jackson has to miss would be tough. He is the catalyst on office. Take him away and you take away play-action passes. Not good.
curious: Something's been bugging me about the sudden playing ability of the Rams. Was Linehan listening to his coaches at all? This is the same group but one, and now they're playing a hundred times better. Were these coaches making suggestions regarding what they are doing now to Linehan, and he just wasn't listening? Or did they bother, thinking he was on his way out anyway. Maybe I'm unaware of how it works on the inside, but on the surface it just seems odd that now I'm seeing effort on the players part and ingenuity on the coaches part, and the only difference is Linehan's not there.
Jeff Gordon: The NFL is an emotion-driven league. Pro football is a brutal game. The player must believe. If they don't, it gets tough for the coach. It just does. The players apparently believe in Haslett/
Ram_Malavasi: Gordo:
I know the reports on SJ appear good, but if for some reason he can't go this Sunday in Foxboro, what are the options for the Rams at tailback? I checked some of the available FA running backs, and there appear to be a few quality ones out there (am thinking of Ron Dayne, Mike Bell, Tatum Bell, in particular). If the injury is worse than thought (and if Pittman is not completely healthy) do the Rams sign someone off the street, or do they go with Travis Minor to start (I didn't see anyone on the practice squad that fits)
Any ideas?
Jeff Gordon: Any RB you would bring in now would be almost useless, since the offense can't be learned in a few days. The new guy could have a handful of plays to run and that's it.
Now, if Pittman heals up this week, that would be viable insurance in case Jackson's quad doesn't loosen up.
R.C.: Gordo, I'm a season ticket holder to Blues & Cardinals. I attend about 4 Rams games per year and watch all of them. I love st. louis sports.
But is there ANY game that generated the kind of energy we saw in Scottrade on Saturday night. Hockey is a really brutal game on TV, but live I'm just not sure that I've seen any sport in STL generate as much energy from fans.
FYI, I was at the Dallas game on Sunday and LOVED the intensity, but it doesn't TOUCH the energy of the shootout.
Jeff Gordon: I'm really happy for the Blues and their fans. To come back against the Hawks, force the OT and shootout and then win it -- wow. The Blues went months without generating the excitement the team did the last two games at home. The timing is great, too, since fans are still deciding whether to get on the bandwagon.
Alton Guy @Heart: Is there any way to pick up Manny? We whould have a hitter behind Pujols that way and be able to keep Adam Kennedy out of the outfield. Manny can field pretty good.
Jeff Gordon: Crazy Scott Boras is talking about a $150 million deal, but that might end up being $60 million for three years. Still, that is way too much for this team. Look for the Yankees to go crazy and spend stupid money to get him.
Cooper0413: Oh Great Gordo....we bow to your vast knowledge.
I've seen lots of talk concerning Peavy and what it would take to get him. I've seen people talk about should we or shouldnt we trade Rasmus and/or Ankiel to get him. All of that discussion got me to wondering....beyond Albert, what player(s)/prospect(s) would you NOT trade under any circumstance and why?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Wainwright out to be untouchable. He, Albert, Molina . . . and, well, that's about it.
San Diego Paul: Dear Gordo,
I know many in St. Louis hope the Cardinals obtain Peavy and Greene.
Is there any concern, however, about Peavy's arm. In the last two years
he has missed about a month each year with assorted arm problems. This year he clearly was not as effective as in the past. Are the Cardinals
confidant that they would not be acquiring another Mulder?
Greene's contract runs out after this year. Would any trade be
contingent on an extension or would be in the rent-a-player game?
San Diego Paul
Jeff Gordon: The Cards might not want to extend Greene until they got a good luck at what he could do with their coaches. As for Peavy, his ERA has been great. And there are arm concerns about almost any pitcher. There is always risk of a Mulder-like breakdown. We saw it with Carpenter. But this team has taken risks before and won, as you saw with Williams and Suppan.
Brett G.: First off, could NOT stand Chase's stupid grin on his face and his waaay too long a hug of McCoy after the game. You got humitilated son, and you lost your Heisman AND National Title!... Loved to see the Rams play like they did yesterday. Oh man, was it really all Linehan? Maybe Haslett should've been coach from Day 1, instead of DC?.... Ok, now my question. Why no love for Barton? Honestly, from what I've seen, all the man needs is some consistent playing time. Ok, his arm might not be as strong as others, but his speed should make up for that. Here in KC, seeing Joey Gathright in person, the other team's defense changes around a guy that can fly! How bout from L-R: Barton, Rasmus, Ludwick? Considering Lud and Ankiel both won't be back.......
Jeff Gordon: Love Barton, but an everyday OF needs to hit with more power or steal a whole lot more bases. So Barton is just a handy extra outfielder, until he does one or the other.
Glenn Wood: Is Pietrangelo going to make it back on to the roster for the next game and play meaningful minutes back on the power play?
Jeff Gordon: Alex is an interesting case. As injured Blues return -- and as Brewer holds his own as a power-play fill-in -- the team will be more tempted to send him back to junior. The key could be injuries to other players, or the lack thereof.
If he stays, I'd like to see him play significant minutes. If that time is not there for him, send him out.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
With Steve Jackson's injury a lot of focus on depth (or lack thereof) is at RB.
However, I think Carriker's injury is going to be more of an issue because the Rams don't have a lot of options at DT.
How do you see the Rams replacing Carrkier?
Glover is a great situational guy; however, I don't think he has the legs to be an every down guy anymore.
Thanks again for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: The fact that Adeyanju can move inside is helpful. You're right about Glover, he is better as a situation player.
Brett: Jeff,
How exciting was it to see the Rams beat the Cowboys. They sent that group home with their heads hangin' low.
Jeff Gordon: Jerry Jones was sad. Doesn't that make you feel sad?
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
If the Cardinals pull out of the Peavy derby, the clock will begin to run for Colby Rasmus. The St. Louis fan base (including myself) will justify that if he is too good to trade for a CY winner, he must be ready for CF in St. Louis.
That said, the current makeup of our rotation is unimpressive if Carpenter misses any time. As exciting as it would be to see Jake in St. Louis next year, I would be AS excited to see Jess Todd make a major league contribution. Since Jaime Garcia is not in the '09 picture, Todd is all I have to be excited about (I'm not on the Clayton Mortensen bandwagon yet). Does Jess Todd have what it takes to contribute, and if so, what type of ML'er does he project to be and how would you describe his "stuff"?
Jeff Gordon: Todd might be a short Suppan -- good enough fastball, nice mix of pitches, great idea of what he is doing, good command. But he is built like a reliever, given his size.
HEG: Gordo it seems that Mizzou and the Rams are going in different directions; first the Tigers were playing well & the Rams were just showing up; now it seems they have reversed roles; Mizzou might have been over-rated earlier. I think they need to forget about national championships and Heisman hopefuls & try to focus on winning some games; hopefully the Rams will continue their winning ways. Re; the Cardinals if they are truly interested in obtaining Peavy I believe they should also try to get Greene in same deal; maybe they could offer Kennedy, Anderson, Izturis, Garcia, and Ankiel for the two from the Padres. What is your opinion on this?
Jeff Gordon: Garcia will miss the year with elbow surgery, so he has no value. Izturis will be a free agent, so he has no value. Kennedy has no value.
BrettB: Hey Gordo! Obviously now the Blues have had a whif of what the Rookies are all about, does Porters fire starting goal solidify him on the roster? (I know he started on the 1st line against Chicago's best scoring line, but when Stempy comes back will he return to the "Gold" Line) Also seeing Osh dazzle the 19,000+ in attendance, how long until we see their teammate Jean Phillip Lamoureux in a Blue Note?
Jeff Gordon: The old North Dakota goalie won his first two games for the Alaska Aces, but that is a long way from the NHL.
Bill: Hey Jeff, is Eddie Kennison basically washed up? I take it he's lost a lot of speed cause the Rams don't seem interested in using him.
Jeff Gordon: Eddie just held a spot until injured players returned. He'll be going home soon.
BrettB: Gordo, Watching Capt. Jonny Toews putting points on the board 40 seconds into the game on Saturday. I couldn't help, but wonder what if the Blues would have taken him 1st overall in that '06 draft instead of the injured EJ.. Also who you got for the Calder this year?
Jeff Gordon: Johnson is a real good player, it's just too bad he got hurt.
The Calder is wide open, with so many first-year players. Can Fabian keep it going in Dallas? We'll see. Stamkos has been a disappointment in Tampa Bay.
mizzourah1986: Gordo,
Just curious, did anything ever come out of last week at Washington when Josh Brown kicked the winning field goal, and the jumbotron in the backround was fading in and out as the play was going on?
Jeff Gordon: No -- and that sort of thing isn't going to bother Brown. He couldn't more confident.
Griff21: I was saddened to hear of King's injury & possibly surgery too. he's one of my favs. Much better than that loser jenssen. are there any planned roster moves? & how bout some updates on other injured players, junlund, stempy et al?
Jeff Gordon: King is a pure fighter. Cam is an agitator -- different deal, although will fight anybody, if need be. I didn't get out to Blues practice today, but perhaps J.R. will update you over on the Blues page.
Brian: I love the energy the young kids have brought to the Blues so far. Will any of them ultimately get sent down to the minors and is there a benefit to the team in doing so other than getting them playing time?
Jeff Gordon: Chris Porter is a bubble guy, but I like him. He is hindered because other guys would have to clear waivers to go down. We've talked about Alex and the surplus on D. Junland might need some time in the "A" coming back from his injury. Patrik and T.J. will be there all year, barring a huge falloff.
Griff21: so there has been talk of Springer & his possible comeback. with his potential return and the rest of the righties we have, how much of an overhaul is the bullpen gonna get? obviously we need help on the left side. ( dont say fuentes) TLR wont give one of the kids the closer role would he?
Jeff Gordon: Perez and Motte got late-game opportunities last season and they top the list this year. I like Springer in that set-up role with the kids. Izzy moves on and Kyle may got to the rotation, so there will be an overhaul with new lefties coming in.
Griff21: What happened to the tigers? are they that bad or the other teams that good?
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou isn't bad, but the Tiger aren't able to match up, physically, with real Top 5 teams.
owen: have you heard whether they are still looking at any other players on other teams pratice squads that we could sign to improve the team.i would think that kennison would be released since looker is cleared to play.
Jeff Gordon: Bennett could still come back, so that makes it even more crowded. Burton will command more time going forward and Stanley will as well, if his head is OK.
Griff21: seeing Tatis back in the league brings back some memories, I know you are busy but could you do a little story on ' where are they now' some of our former players john gall, i remember has some playing time in asia then came back to play in the mlb. how about like bo hart, bud smith, stubby clapp, hector luna, even joe mcewing they might not be the best, fringe players mostly but where did they end up? are they still playing?
Jeff Gordon: Gall played with the Marlins system last year and got to the bigs. Smith pitched independent ball for a while, but his shoulder is shot. Bo Hart it out, I believe.
NYC Rams Fan: Hi Jim,
Great win this week, but 2 concerns: First, even though it was missing some starters, the O-Line dramatically improved its run-blocking. Why is it still struggling so badly in pass-protection. Bulger was more confident, but 5 sacks in 24 drop-backs will slow or stop the restoration of his confidence.
Second, Clinton Portis said it best-- when Washington played like they were underdogs, they were focused and won. When they got TOO confident, they looked past the Rams and lost. How do the Rams stay grounded? Last year after the bye, we won 2 games in a row, and then lost 5 of the last 6. How do we make sure the Rams stay confident, but grounded?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Losing 17 of 20 games keeps grounded. I don't know how anybody could be too cocky. The pass protection had a few breakdowns against Dallas, but that is a good rush team, to say the least.
thomas_praxis: Hey Jeff!
It sounds like there are 2 camps for Tiger football fans.
Camp 1: Pinkel and coaching staff have failed to get the Tigers prepared the last 2 weeks. They fail to adapt their strategies during games. The Tigers are not a top tier team. They haven't beaten the big boys from the South.
Camp 2: Tiger fans be happy. The team is the best it has been in decades. It is ridiculous to criticize the team after what it has accomplished the past 2 seasons.
I myself lean more towards the critical side. Prior to the beginning of the season I felt that if the Tigers didn't win the Big 12 championship that it meant stagnation if not a step backwards. I guess I reserve my judgment until the championship game (if we get there).
What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: After two horrible decades, I can't pound Pinkel for failing to beat legit Top 5 or Top 10 teams. It just reminds Mizzou fans how hard it really is to get to the top.
Going from No. 60 in the country to No. 1 is tough. And that is what Pinkel is trying to do.
richard.gabler: Do you think the Tigers can rebound and go 10-2?
Jeff Gordon: I can see them getting a run together and reaching the Big 12 title game. But they have a long way to go to be good enough to beat a Big 12 South power.
Obes: Jeff - Do you see the rams signing a running back if Jackson will be out for a few weeks or just getting by with what they have? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Let's see if Pittman will be back. He got on the field a bit last week, so there is hope.
Gordon: The Blues look great with their first few games. It seems that everyone is playing like a "Team". Do you think this will last?
Jeff Gordon: There is a good vibe there, so the team can take advantage of these early home games. But the schedule WILL turn and injuries can change everything. The key is to have lots of juice left in March.
Pete: What does the organization think of Ron Flores as an option from the left side of the bullpen? It seemed like he put up a solid, albeit unspectacular season at AAA last year. Also, the lefty we traded Reyes for, what is the story and scouting report on him? Any chance he makes an impact ever or in the near future. Finally do you think Fernando Salas gets a long look in spring training if they decide to put McClellan in the rotation. I saw him in that Futures game and he was very impressive. Keep up the good work
Jeff Gordon: Luis Perdomo could be a candidate as early as next season as a middle reliever. Pretty good arm there. Threw well at Springfield. Ron is just a depth guy. All the young arms will get a look in the spring, as they did in last spring. Mortensen is the next up on the list to start, IF he isn't moved in a deal for veteran hurler.
bleedblu17: Gordo,
There are rumblings of a Rick Ankiel/Bryan Anderson for Phil Hughes/Ian Kennedy trade. Any truth to this?
Jeff Gordon: Wow -- Cards fans would love that. Haven't heard if it is more than a message board deal.
Griff21: I'm a bit disappointed in the scoring rules for the shootout, when the team wins the winning goal is credited as a 'team goal'. I realize this is to cut down on goal totals ( hence lower salaries) but guys like Oshie, his first career NHL goal is a shootout goal but it doesnt count, he doesnt get credit for it...kinda seems to suck. so since the goals dont count are the goalies stats effected either?
Jeff Gordon: As a lover of fantasy hockey, I agree.
JesusJet: How do you maintain your composure when you receive an idiotic question during one of these chat sessions? Do you ignore it? Does your keyboard have a second second delay? Do you indulge them as you would a child? Will the cards trade for Peavy? Does this post qualify as idiotic? Please advise....
Jeff Gordon: Most of the questions/comments are pretty reasonable, actually. Haven't seen too many implausible trade proposals. One or two a session, no more. Most of the comments I delete are due to repetition.
CardsRedOctober09: What would it take to get Kevin Gregg? Would he be a good fit as the Cards closer for the beginning of '09? Rather than signing an expensive closer with Perez waiting in the wings and sacrificing upgrades at the middle infield, we could trade for Gregg and if he falters at some point, let Perez take over.
Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine the price would be all that high. Maybe one of the many extra Cards outfielders might make something like happen.
Griff21: how does our backup goalie situation play out in the short term ?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues will rotate the kids, so one guy gets a lot of work at Peoria, then the other. The Blues don't want either player sitting around with nothing to do. With the team at home for a long homestand, this is a great time for Mason to bow out.
tater_r8r: Had the most fun I've had @ a Rams game in years yesterday. Two comments regarding the Dallas fans on hand. Classless display chanting 'Romo Romo' while Derek Stanl;ey lay motionless on the field. Highlight of the day waving goodbye to those fans as they departed early in the 4th quarter. Sometimes you don't get your money's worth traveling on the road with your team.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, I mentioned the Romo chant on my live chat. Very classless. Also, it was sad to see them leave the dome with the heads down.
Griff21: minus the blues one blowout we seem solid , high scoring , coming from behind. while i hope the best for the blues the blowout was on a back to back game, which we have seemingly hundreds of, ( something like 30 actually but still a god awful number) in past seasons we have been atrocious in the second game. whats your feel for this year? Does manny step up and play both or does mason recover & find himself and play all the second games?
Jeff Gordon: When Chris is healthy, he'll usually take one of the games when the team goes back to back. That is what he is here for.
James: So...Chris Porter...Do you think the Blues will keep him up? He is a STRONG Player and what a penalty killer!!!! I say they keep him around. Oshie and Ports together again!!! woohooo
Jeff Gordon: The Blues like Stastny and he would have to clear waivers to go down. On the other hand, King's injury ought to keep Chris around longer. That cut into the depth.
Bald_81: Jeff,
I am still a Bulger supporter, but for all of those who think we should draft a QB with our 1st or 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft, what exactly are the cap ramifications if we decide to cut him or trade him? He is only in the second year of his $65 mil contract, so in my opinion we are stuck with him for at least two more seasons. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Marc's signing bonus wasn't extreme and that is the key to cap hits. More of his money is salary, which makes it easier to walk away at some point. (His money the first two years was guaranteed, though, and that would have had cap implications.)
Jonathan: Jeff,
For Mizzou to adapt to playing top 5 teams, especially in the Big 12 South, would it not make sense for Mizzou to have a tougher non-conference schedule, against maybe a Florida or Alabama?
Jeff Gordon: No -- getting ready for OU and Texas is more about recruiting that playing tough teams. Mizzou got handled by OSU, then played even worsein the first half against Texas. The experience was no good for them.
Playing in the tough Big 12 gets you ready for the league title game and the big bowls. The conference is tough enough. Adding more tough games wouldn't necessarily help.
adam: can the tigers still get to the bcs game if they win all of their rest of their games and beat texas in the big 12 championship game?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but a lot of bad stuff has to happen to the Ohio States and USCs out there.
James: And.....what a no look pass to "Walt"... everyone still needs to remember that Oshie sees everything on the ice...I watch everygame on CenterIce (because I am out of town) but these announcers don't seem to see his strength, kind of like Bernie said "Oshie Hype not all its cracked up to be" whats your take?
Jeff Gordon: Oshie is strong, in addition to being speedy with good vision and skills. He likes to hit. Murray compared him to Adam Deadmarsh, but I think he is more creative.
adam: will the blues make a big trade when they are ready to make a playoff run??
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but I see them staying the course with kids as much as possible.
will: Can you please comment on how before the game was played everybody had the cowboys winning just fine with out Romo, and after the game it was if the rams didnt play it was just about how the cowboys lost and are not good. CAN SOMEBODY GIVE THE RAMS A LITTLE CREDIT ON NATIONAL TV
Jeff Gordon: Well, the Rams did lose 17 of the previous 21. And the Cowboys ARE America's Team so you have to give them that.
Frankie: When will Steven Jackson's MRI report come out? Any estimated time? I'm nervously anticipating it along with the rest of Rams fans!
Jeff Gordon: We'll have an update later this afternoon.
zs71: Do you think Mizzou can really win big games with the spread against defenses with as much speed as Texas or Oklahoma???
Jeff Gordon: Apparently not. Teams with great athletes can take away a lot of Mizzou's advantage.
B-Ball Fan: Amazing game yesterday in the Dome. I sit amongst many a smug Cowboy fans who were really rubbing it in when their Boys scored first, but oh how sweat when they slinked out to our good-bye waves in the 4th. Quarter. My question is: Did all the high priced players decide to earn their pay check after Linehan was fired or are the Rams this good now ? Gop Rams !!!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams aren't as bad as they were earlier this year and they probably aren't as good as they were against Dallas for three quarters. The coaching change meant everything.
lfulk1: Just a bit of info and not a question, but I noticed you like to include Wallace as potential trade bait; too bad he cannot be traded until 1 year after he is drafted. So he isn't really available...to any team really.
Jeff Gordon: So we'll make "eventual" trade bait . . . unless Albert Pujols blows the elbow between now and the time he becomes trade eligible.
Frankie M: Is there any internal talks whatsoever in regards of getting OJ a long-term extension? Same goes for Bartell, and Incognito. These guys are our future, and we need to lock them up...NOW!
Jeff Gordon: Wow, a week after everybody wanted Richie gone, now he is getting a shoutout for an extension.
zs71: Now that Chase Daniel has struggled in the last 2 games do you think he is really a good QB or a product of the system???
Jeff Gordon: He's both, really. I think he could succeed in college in a conventional college offense.
merrit: will the cardinals make a big splash in the offseason???
Jeff Gordon: Yes, because they have a surplus of guys at certain positions. Deals will occur.
matt: What did JD and others mean when they talk about the growing up that David Perron needed to make last year? What type of things was he involved in.
Jeff Gordon: Just the usual teenage stuff, run-ins with the coach and so forth.
Andrew: Could we get our first taste of the off season within the next couple weeks? As in.. Should we expect a big deal be made sometime very soon? I really do think the offseason is about as fun as the regular season.
Jeff Gordon: Teams looking to maximize their trade return should deal before free agency heats up. So, yes, something could happen. You never know. The Cards have some needs to fill and surpluses to address.
dingo: who do you see the cardinals go after as far as big name players.
Jeff Gordon: Not so much with free agency, but look for other trades to be discussed besides Peavy
Will: Good Afternoon Jeff,
....Execution....Passion....Whistle To Whistle.. Aggressiveness.....Toughness....Win Or Lose Rams, We Are Watching Again..
Jeff Gordon: The guys will appreciate that.
Dan: Jeff,
You can really see the maturation of Bartell. He has been playing great. I really think the Rams need to lock this guy into a long term contract.
Jeff Gordon: He is getting lots of love these days, for good reason. He has gotten really solid.
That's it for today -- gotta run to Rams Park.
