B in Denver: Gordo, thanks for your time. I could see the value of signing Renteria and Grudzielanek, for 1 or 2 year deals, to bridge to their replacements on the farm. I guess it would depend on what it took to sign them. I'd also like to see the Cards sign Looper if the price is right. You can never have enough pitching. What is the first day that free agents can be signed?
Jeff Gordon: Teams can start negotiating with free agents on other teams on Nov. 14. They can negotiate with their own free agents now. If the Cards can get Braden Looper for reasonable money, the club ought to take that step as a hedge against Carpenter's injury. Edgar could be a viable short-term shortstop. If the Cards go short-term there, the club may spend longer money on a second baseman. Grudzielanek would be a surer bet than Lopez, as far as the hitting goeds.
Tackleberry: Here is what I don't understand; the O-line was decent last year and they were the walking wounded. This year they have Pace & Incognito healthy, and they go out and get Bell, and some how they are worse? When does Romberg get some reps? At some point don't they just have to admit that Barron will probably go somewhere else and be a monster, but he just is not improving here?
Jeff Gordon: Barron had issues in New England and he wasn't great Sunday. But the line did open holes at New England and did manhandle the Cowboys, so there is hope.
Another issue is the failure of others, like fullback Dan Kreider, to hold up their end in pass protection situations.
Tim: Im confused, The Cards said they were going to do a wait and see with Carpinter and that they were going to be patient with the moves that they will make. First id like to say that that is so freakin stupid. And what Im confused about is does he mean just with the moves he is going to make on his rotation or moves period. It doesnt make any sense to me to not make any moves for SS or 2b because your waiting to see if a pithcer will be ready so I was hoping you could explain that to me
Jeff Gordon: The Carpenter situation only impacts pitching. I agree that the Cards should address the rotation anyway and then deal if any surplus that materializes later on. As we saw last year, pitching depth is paramount.
The Cards are ready to explore options at SS and @B right away, either via the trade route or free agency.
Tim: Do you think the Blues will be able to get Shanny and if they do what do you see the lines looking like?
Jeff Gordon: The lines will change constantly regardless of whether Shanahan arrives or doesn't. That is life in the NHL. Projecting lines is futile. The Blues have a bigger need for Shan the Man now that Oshie will miss significant time with his ankle injury. But look for Shanahan to exhaust all his options in the Northeast and with contenders before considering St. Louis.
Tim: What kind of package would the Cards have to put together to get Brian Roberts? Do you see them being big players in that Department?
Jeff Gordon: Right now the Orioles are trying to extend Robert's contract, which expires after next season. The club insists that is its top offseason priority, so trade talks are on hold.
Tim: What kind off contract do you think Kerry Wood will get this offseason and will the Cards be big bidders for him?
Jeff Gordon: I'd be shocked if the Cards would gamble more than minimum salary plus bonuses on Wood, given his injury issue. And why would they want Wood to close over Perez? I imagine there will be teams willing to spend money on this project, but right-handed relief is one of the Cards' organizational strengths.
In fact, Mozeliak argues that there is no room right now for Springer. I'd argue there is always room for a reliable righty set-up guy, since his retention would put McClellan in play for the rotation.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
With all these ex-Cards entering the free agent market (i.e., Edmonds, Eckstein, Renteria, Grudzielanek, Ponson), it makes Redbird fans wonder about who could be making a second tour of duty in St. Louis.
I think most would agree that Renteria is the best bet among the ex-Cards to come back to St. Louis, but do you think there's any chance for any of the others? Are the betting odds for Eckstein's return as good as the are for Renteria?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Eckstein offers nothing at this point. He'd be OK at second base, but the Cards have plenty of OK second base. And he can't play shortstop any more. Grudzielanek would be a better choice at @B and others you mention have no value here.
donsdos: Gordo--you often mention Cassell as a young FA QB available next year. Are there any others that might fit the bill?
Jeff Gordon: Ryan Fitzpatrick of the Bengals could become a free agent, I believe. Rams fans would love him back and he will be looking for a chance to start.
Rafael Furcal: I really want the Cards to sign me I think I would be a great leodoff hitter for them and a solid shortstop. Do you think Mo and Dewitt will make a huge push to sign me? Also Orlando Hudson and me have been talking and he wants to play for the Cards to and says we would be a perfect double play duo so what about him?
Jeff Gordon: For $25 million a year for the two of them, that SS-2B combo will not fly in St. Louis. Both players have a good chance to be dramatically overpaid in their next deals.
Griff21: Ok so Oshie is out for awhile, generally ankle sprains take a few weeks to months to heal up. while JD said no call ups now, this current roster seems a little ... lacking. is it wise to try riding out this injury? shouldn't we bring bring up one of the kids or journeymen from peoria?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues have a surplus on hand. Let's see what Stastny does with his chance. I loved Porter here earlier this year. Otherwise, there are no compelling options at Peoria at this point.
Griff21: I've gone back and forth on Shanny. I can see his winning experience and leadership as major assets to a young team. not to mention his past history with the city = fans in seats.
but we need defense, we are very young and an injury away from near disaster.
Also we have KT and Backes who would be nearly the same style player as shanny.
Is shanny a priority or just a distant blip on the radar? would he be a worthwhile asset to the team considering finances & other needs?
Jeff Gordon: He would help the team, especially with Oshie out. As for the "D", there more internal options at that position than at forward.
Tim: What are the chances that Wallace can become a LF for the Cards? What kind of stats do you see him putting up at an MLB level
Jeff Gordon: He will really have to train hard to gain the mobility needed to be decent in LF. But he could become a Pat Burrell-type player, with lots of home runa and gap power.
Griff21: Why no love for schwartz(SP)? he has potential and seems to have gotten his head on straight. he always has gotten left out , looked over, & generally forgotten. now he seems to be getting it together. goalies take time & work. I understand a guy like Bishop passing him on the depth chart , since he is pegged as our future #1. but Holt backing up mason? seriously? the guy has next to no pro experience. maybe you can provide some insight on the move.
Jeff Gordon: The Blues want their young goaltenders playing, not sitting as an emergency option. This is Marek's last shot to stick in North America. He needs to progress. His approach is better, but he is still stuck at No. 4 on the chart. Bishop's injury gave him an opportunity to play more. He needs to make a statement.
Tim: Do you see the Cards trying to trade Lienhart? If they do would the Rams show interest?
Jeff Gordon: Nah, I see the Gridbirds sticking with Matt. Kurt is 37 and one big hit away from sitting again.
Griff21: comment & a Q
the 'wait and see' approach with pitching is a waste of time mulder, clement, carp... et al. if we had another pitcher last year we would have a much better shot at the post season. instead we waited , and waited and missed out.
so take it for what its worth but we have to plan like carp is a non factor next year. nobody knows about him, and as of now he cannot do anything. you cant build a staff around a guy who cant throw. It pained me this year to watch as MO sat on his hands. even if he couldnt get an all star any sort of stability to the rotation would have been huge.
what do you think of randy johnson as a card? possible? is he even available?
Jeff Gordon: The wait-and-see approach allowed the Cards to sign Lohse at a remarkable bargain in the middle of spring training. So that strategy worked. The Mulder extension and the Clement signing were different deals altogether.
Randy Johnson threw well in the second half last season, so he is a plausible target for the Cards. He is a free agent and Arizona isn't sure it wants to buck up for him. But look for the Big Unit to prefer a West Coast destination.
Griff21: I'm glad we retained Larue he seems to mesh well with the team & is very solid. of our FAs who will be back? Looper & springer I wouldnt mind seeing return. Villone , not so much.I wouldnt mind Izturiz coming back but the theme seems to be ' more offense, less D'. Lopez seems to be Miles with a bit more pop. there is no reason in my mind to hand him the starting 2B job, he projects as a bench, platoon player at best( maybe a rotation of miles kennedy and lopez @ 2B in that order?)
Jeff Gordon: Izturis appears to be done here, since the Cards need offense at '09 at that position. The same goes for second base, where the team needs to settle on a productive every day player. Springer has value, too, even with the Cards deep at RH reliever.
Griff21: what are the dates to sign FA players? when can we sign other teams players & when do we lose the rights to our own FAs?
Jeff Gordon: The fun begins Nov. 14.
RamFanInPA: Well folks the brief Haslett honeymoon is over. Let's face it, Haslett's defenses have shown NOTHING to make us think he is the man to lead the Rams. Many wanted him gone just as much as Linehan! The Rams need to start with an entire new staff in January, this one has shown nothing. Let's hope that Chip realizes this as well.
Jeff Gordon: After two wins, fans wanted him to get a multi-year deal. After two losses, they want him fired. There is plenty of time left to assess his value. Let's see how it plays out.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
Was that interview the other day with T.O. or Torry Holt?
One thing that set the Rams wide outs from prima-donnas like Chad Johnson is they didn't open their yaps and start publically calling for the ball. That is until now.
I have always liked Torry Holt as a player and a person. However, the last thing the Rams need right now is a veteran player mouthing off to the press.
When rumors started filtering out Holt was on the trading block during the waning days of the Linehan era, I thought that was move based purely on spite.
However, now I am starting to think maybe there is a little more to it than that.
Thanks for hosting these chats allowing suffering Rams fans to vent our collective spleens.
Jeff Gordon: Torry is playing and talking his way out of St. Louis, which is too bad. What a career he had here. But if he wants to be a big part of the offense during the stretch run, he must get open. Period.
Austin: Though alot of sources have said tha the Cards wont land Peavy I've herd multiple rumors saying that the Cardinals along with the Brewers and Astros ar the front runners to acquire Jake Peavy, they say we have the prospects neccesary to make the deal happen. Do you think Mo will consider this deal, you cant count on Carp coming back 100%. Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The Cards can't count on Carpenter coming back 100 percent and management knows that. But if the Padres insist on an elite, rotation-ready pitching prospect in return for Peavy, there may not be a fit for the Cards. But Mozeliak is at least willing to talk with that team.
Danny E: Gordo.
Thanks for the chat. I've been a Card fan for over 50 years. Last year was so depressing. We were close but management let us down. Obviously we need bullpen help, especially from the left side. Living in Kentucky I wonder if there is an interest in Scott Downs, a KY guy. He had a grest year in Toronto and would look great with the Birds on the Bat.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Injuries caused that team to fall short last year, not management. Management went out and got Glaus in a steal, Lohse as a top free-agent pick and Lopez as a great late-season hire. The team graduated a ton of prospects and won eight more games despite getting decimated by injuries.
Downs is just one of many mid-level hurlers that could help this team. He is signed through 2010 and I don't know if Toronto would move him for what the Cards would offer.
spriggster: Gordo,
I asked a couple of weeks ago why the Rams deferred the opening kick-off. I was told it was at Bulger's request. Again yesterday the Rams give away the ball. In my book that should go down no different than a fumble or an interception. It's a turn-over. The only reason, I can think of, to defer would be weather consideration (to get favorable wind for your style offense and 4th quater field goal consideration). What am I missing? Why would you give a high powered offense the ball if you didn't have to? Also, a couple of comments on the game. One, the Rams came out looking flat or scared. No emotion at all. That goes back to Bulger. The most unemotional player in the game. It was nice to see he make a half hearted attempt at a fist pump after a brilliant catch and run for a touch down. The Rams have to get a firery leader to go with Haslett's style. And I guess Jackson was really too injured to go yesterday, why else would you have pitman in on a critical 4th and 1 and your $65,000,000 guy watching on the bench? Isn't Bulger making the same? Cap trouble for years to come!
Jeff Gordon: There are no cap troubles for years to come on this team. If changes must be made, they'll be made.
I'm not a big fan of deferring possession at the start of the game. If you don't you can score on the opening drive, then the team should sack the offensive coordinator and find 11 new starters.
And if the Rams really want their defense to start the game . . . well, then folks are drinking crazy juice at Rams Park.
Bluebadge: Good Afternoon,
I am in the New England area; hence, ony see the Blues on Center Ice. Of late, I have been keenly watching replays of goals against our team. Perhaps it is the perspective one gets on TV; but, it appears our goalies do not place themselves behind the pucks travel when shot on net. That is, they appear to virtually remain staionary and stick out their hand to "snare" or, "cherry-pick" the puck versus place their bodies in line with the direction of the puck. Perhaps it's a false anology, but in baseball youngsters are ALWAYS coached to "get in front of the ball." I am just about sick of watching our goalies - hands out-stretched, looking behind them - into the net - to see the puck there. I realize many goals are made on deflections - but at least two goals Saturday night apeared to be easily stoppable (if they were "in front of the puck"). What is up with that????? Secondly, if we are "re-buiding with youth" - and have decided to not buy short-term superstars in the process - I would expect our salary base to be less than most teams who have opted for a different course (post season play). Concurently, I would expect us not to be in the hunt for post season play. It appears we have a higher than expected salary - but no hope for post season play - that does not compute. Can you comment on that, please? Thanks for the opportunity to ask the questions, and thanks for your support. GO BLUES!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Mason would like one of those goals back. Positioning is everything for the goaltenders and generally the Blues' veterans are pretty sound there. (Schwarz needs work on that.)
The Blues rank as a moderate spender this season. This team is rebuilding with youth, but there is still a large investment in veterans. They are a borderline playoff contender, although the past few games were not encouraging.
Thom Wilborn: Oh Great One:
Do you think the Nationals' Chad Cordero might find a home in St. Louis. Yes, he's been injured, but he is very overlooked and a gutsy stopper. In the arena of left-handers, do you think Mike Maroth could come back as a situational reliever? Everyone knows he pitched better that he did in St. Louis, or do you think he's done?
Thanks for your perception and insight.
Far Removed Cardinals Fan
Jeff Gordon: Maroth's shoulder was shot the last time the Cards saw him. If that has changed, maybe he could get a tryout. He is a smart pitcher, but 70 mph doesn't get it done.
Cordero is OK, but Perez has the potential to be just as good. I'd rather see the Cards bid on Fuentes.
Red Bird: Jeff,
For five years, various football commentators have told us that Kurt Warner was a Mike Martz creation with little real talent; isn't it time to consider if Martz supposed genius might be a creation of Warner's talent?
Jeff Gordon: Warner's ability to make tough throws speaks for itself. To me, the only knock on him became his fumble-itis, due to hand injuries, and the habit of holding the ball too long. He has fixed those issues in Arizona.
Darin In South Bend: Jeff,
We have heard alot about the list of prospects that the Cardinals think they have and those that could be traded this off season to improve the major league roster. But in your opinion, how reluctant are the Cardinals to trade these young players when they may have to go young or cheap in the coming years if they plan on signing Albert Pujols to a new deal?
Since Albert has said that he will not take a discount, you would think he would make 18-20 million per year which is hard on our 100-105 million dollar budget.
So should we expect limited minor league players to be dealt this off season in preperation to having to sign Albert to a big deal? I can't believe this organization would let Albert walk knowing the already impatience shown by the fan base. Albert in a uniform without birds on the bat would leave to the coup of all coups!
Jeff Gordon: Keeping Albert until retirement will be a priority. The Cards have done a pretty good job locking in veterans. To do that, the team will have to develop lots of young pitching and enough position players. That is how you balance it up.
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
IMO I believe Carpenter is done as a starting pitcher. He has not pitched for the most part of two years! With that said here is my question for you.
If Carps health remains "questionable" going into the winter meetings what are your thoughts on the dynamics in regard to the "priorities" Mo might shift to? Will the assets (FA/TRADE value) we have be used to acquire another top starter or will a LRP (like say...Fuentes) still be the #1 target?
Thank you Jeff...the time and energy you take to answer "many or all" the fans questions is very well noticed in my corner of the world. "IT IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED"!!!
Jeff Gordon: Top left-handed relief pitching is a priority, Carpenter concerns aside. But Carpenter's progress this winter (or lack thereof) could prompt late movement at that position. This team will have the ability to make a later deal if all the free agents are gone. The assets are stacking up.
Frank BB,Ca: Hey Gordo,
I see Bulger went off on Reporters but dont you think he should save that passion for the field? The guy is like a robot on the field and if he used that passion on the field, I feel he could be a great QB , what do you think?
Frank BB Ca.
Jeff Gordon: His statistical decline speaks for itself. So does his won-loss record at quarterback. He is not to blame for all the team's woes, but he has certainly given in to them. Right now he lacks the ability to elevate the group.
bill weber: The Tampa Bay Rays have a wealth of young starting pitchers. They are probably apt to listen to moving Edwin Jackson for a starting outfielder. How about Ludwig or Shoe for Jackson. Salaries are a wash! ?
Jeff Gordon: I've seen that suggestion before, but outfielders are the easiest commodity to add. There is no reason to trade a viable starting pitcher for an outfielder. Schumaker offers no power and no base stealing ability. He has little trade value.
Josh: "Oh, I know everyone's going to say it's my fault. They're going to say I'm throwing off my back foot or crap like that. But you know what? I don't care what people say. All I care about are what my teammates and my family says."
A quote from Marc Bulger. I don't know if he has ever seen gametape of himself but every pass he makes is from his back foot. How does he not realize that? It kind of sucks now that he's the leader of the team, because someone above him needs to sit him down and let him know that he needs to perform before he can talk.
Jeff Gordon: I thought his mechanics were better Sunday, but his accuracy was off. Some of that was the fact rookies were making mistakes, but still . . .
Opponents see the same thing fans see. And so does this coaching staff.
chucknater: I can understand Mr. Bulger's feelings on the various opinions of his performance but I think he overstates his value to the rest of the NFL. Problem being when he is surrounded by an superior team he looks good but he is not good enough to take an average team and make them look better because he is only an AVERAGE NFL quarterback. I think only this Ram's administration values him as much as he is being paid and it only signifies another of the bad decisions being made by them.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are committed to getting Bulger back on track this season. But if that doesn't happen, don't expect the franchise to value his services at his current rate of pay.
Steve: Jeff,
I keep hearing that Wallace should hit his way into the majors next year, and that Freeze is ready for the big show also. With Glaus already here I keep hearing that someone is going to have to go at some point. The question I have is, Why not Glaus?
Is he tradable (meaning would someone else want him), and if so could we fill a current roster need (in addition to getting his 11.5M off the books)?
Jeff Gordon: There is no need to deal Glaus. With a year left on his deal, there isn't much value there. IF the Cards fell out of the race next summer, then, sure, move him to a contender. But he is a real nice player. Maybe Freese will be a nice player too, but his time will come later. Perhaps in 2010 the Cards will start one of the kids at 3B and allocate the Glaus dollars elsewhere.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
Just curious - why has Matt Holliday's name come up in a couple of the latest articles on STLtoday regarding offseason plans? I know the impact bat is low on the priority list, but I also figured Matt Holliday would cost the Cards too much in their minds (both prospect wise and salary wise in the future). Is Holliday really a name the FO is kicking around?
Jeff Gordon: Holliday is a fine player. He would look great behind Pujols in the order. But why is trading prospects and spending huge dollars on an outfielder a good idea when you have a stack of highly productive OFs in place? Why not spend those assets to get an offensive SS, rotation depth and left-handed relief help?
The Cards have many needs. An offensive OF is not one of them.
DisCard: I keep hearing Matt Holiday to back Pujols. What about Magglio Ordonez? I hear the Tigers may be marketing him? He's expenisve, but also a better outfielder than Holliday and a new contract for Holiday might even be more costly. The Cards have a catcher and some outfields that would seem to fit. The Tigers might also have some interest in righthanded relievers, considering the health of the ones they have.
Jeff Gordon: Ordonez could become a salary dump. And that is interesting, because the Cards wouldn't feel obligated to give him a Pujols-like extension, as they would with Holliday.
Tshow: The Rams OL is as bad as any in the NFL. How can't John Greco or Roy Schuening get any playing time? How do the Rams view these players? Not ready yet or busts?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Not ready yet, although some snaps could be coming in the second half.
redbirdswin: How in the world will the Cardinals outbid the Mets for the services of Brian Fuentes? It sounds like New York will pursue him heavily this offseason. The Cards don't participate in bidding wars too often, and when they do, they lose.
Jeff Gordon: Fair 'Nuff. If the Mets go "all in" for Fuentes, the Cards won't match. Going into a new stadium, the Mets have money to burn.
Joe Heckendorn: Hey Jeff
I have the perfect early Christmas present in mind for Albert - Matt Holliday. Rasmus, Anderson and one of the power rh short relievers would probably get this done. If Walt were still calling the shots, he would make this happen.
Jeff Gordon:
Maybe. But then the Cards would be short in the bullpen and they would lack the budget space to address more pressing needs. Look at Holliday's road production and compare that to the guys the team already has in place.
Glenn Turner: Cardinals needs. I would almost always take pitching over hitting. Seems to me that counting on Carpenter is questionable even if the nerve issue shows improvement. He has not pitched in two years. Is Boggs a legitimate 4th or 5th starter in your opinion?
Jeff Gordon: No. Boggs is a depth guy, an injury fill-in, until he proves otherwise. He made be destined for the Thompson role long-term.
Glenn Turner: The Rams have played better under Haslett. However, this team needs significant changes in the offensive line. Bulger is a good QB with time but a poor QB when the other team can pressure him. Drafting a OL in one of the first two rounds for the next two or three drafts is a must. I also believe a run stopping MLB is a need allowing Witherspoon to play outside and use his speed to better advantage. Your thoughts?
Last years draft appears to be solid. Do you have reason to be optimistic we may have found the right guy to make the picks? This is the most important guy in the organization in my opinion.
Jeff Gordon: Devaney has a solid draft, although we haven't seen the kid linemen yet -- to the chagrin of angry Rams fans who want changes now.
mike: What are the chances of bringing in Furcal to play SS and Renteria to play 2B? I can't see Renteria pulling in big money on the market and this would solve our MIF problems of the past couple seasons. I think Renteria is athletic enough to make the switch and can learn the pivot. I just wonder if he would be open to the move. Then maybe we can bring in Fuentes to compete w/ Perez and Motte for the closer role. Throw in a Jeremy Affeldt and/or Will Ohman. Then a trade or signing for another starter...hello October!
Jeff Gordon: Edgar's defense has slipped, but he's too proud to play 2B, I think. Somebody else would sign him to play short. And there are plenty of other 2B who can out-produce him at that position.
bfulton: We've been damn lucky to have Warner and Bulger quaterbacking this team over the last decade. Judging by his comments on the criticism he's been getting ('I don't give a (bleep) what people say') however, may be Bulger's time on the squad is about to end. I understand that Warner's contract situation in Arizona is precarious, though. Any chance the Rams could get him back?
Jeff Gordon: Arizona is talking contract extension with him and his family is quite happy in Arizona.
ueaces: Hi Gordo,
IMO there can be little doubt that the Cardinals are going to have to grab another starting pitcher somewhere. There does appear to be some payroll room to not feel that the organization has to look in the "dumpster" for one (though the Cards have had some amazing success doing this). A safe move, I think, would be resigning Looper. Yeah, he will want and get a multiyear deal, perhaps at 8 mil per. I don't know who else might be avaialbe, but Looper has demonstrated last season he can be a good and consistent pitcher. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I agree. Unless another team wants to overpay the guy, he would be a solid bet here.
Waino12to6: I asked you back in June about your thoughts on Jess Todd. He's still being projected as middle relief, despite his rocket rise through the organization as a starter. I know that doesn't translate to automatic success in the big leagues, but he must be doing something right. I understand he'll get a shot at the 5th starter spot, but realistically, it makes little sense that they switch him to a relief role. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: The team has a bigger need for the rotation, since Boggs could be the middle-relief guy if Thompson gets moved. Todd can still pitch himself into the rotation. He has a chance to move into the Next One Up role in spring training.
Ed C: Gordo,
What did you think of Bulger's statement about the crucial INT? He said he ASSUMED that because he pump-faked to the tight end on the right side the safety would bite. Huh?????? Is he a rookie? My High School coach told us to never assume anything because it will make an ass/u/me. If he really meant that and wasn't just saying this to avoid criticizing the rookie WR then he needs to sit down and watch for a while. Green may not be the answer longterm so play Berlin, anybody. I hope I'm misunderstanding him or something because I am of the opinion that minus a few critical plays the Rams are in the game in the 4th quarter. If I'm not mistaken, take away that INT and his fumble and we would have been down 21-14 with the ball in the 4th quarter. Bulger was not blind-sided on the fumble (in which case you could understand fumbling), the guy came from his right but Bulger was locked onto a WR on the left and didn't appear to see him, another rookie mistake. Bulger's play baffles me.
Jeff Gordon: His play baffles me, too.
Byron: Hey Gordo,
We have a surplus of outfielders (Lud, Ank, Schu, Rasmus, Mather, Duncan) and 3B prospects (craig, Freese, Wallace) . .. Is there any chance that one or two members of the surplus could fill a need by playing middle infield.
could David Freese or Skip Schumacher play 2b or SS?
thanks,
Byron
Jeff Gordon: Schumaker wouldn't add more offense than the current group. You need run production or SBs from that position. He offers neither. Freese could be the 2010 3B if he keeps it up.
Secret Sauce: Assuming Springer is resigned and they were to trade Perez or Motte, who be more likely to go? Do you think this is a likely scenario this offseason?
Jeff Gordon: Trading either Perez or Motte would be insane, but Perez is more likely to help next year. Motte is more of a project.
spriggster: Gordo,
Just read Burwells column on Bulger. He nailed and Bulger said it himself "I don't care". That's easy to say when you are set for life and all that matters is that your friends in the locker room (who probably don't care either) and your family (hey we're set for life) but the fact of the matter is you have to produce in the NFL. You do get paid for past performance and you can ride that for a long time. But the true great players in the league don't give up after the big contract. It's about ability and pride. It's apparent that Bulger and Jackson have niether when it comes down to it. There are many out there with ability and character and PRIDE, let's let them play this year and see what they got. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: He cares, he is just frustrated. And he will never be the gung-ho guy Warner is. He will always suffer in comparison to Kurt.
HEG: Gordo the season is pretty much over for the Rams chance at post season play; the prudent thing for them to do is try to move Bulger which will be difficult with his salary; he is at best a back-up at this stage in his career; the Rams do not control the line either defensively or offensively & without any stats I would say the Rams are near the bottom on 3rd down conversions & at the top on giving up 3rd downs especially 3rd & long; in my opinion they need to go with the young QB & young receivers- Holt is just going thru the motions; one of the reasons the Rams are in this dilemma is their selections thru the draft along with the free agents signings & the players they have failed to re-sign as free agents; I feel the Rams will be playing before sparsely attendance at the rest of their home games this season; agree or disagree with these statements? Re; the Mizzou football team; it is difficult to believe they are the 5th, 6th, or 7th best team in Big 12 with their expectations going into the season.
Jeff Gordon: It IS hard to believe that Missouri is down the Big 12 pecking order below the Big 12 South teams, but I still regard the Tigers as the class of the Big 12 North. They can still get back to the conference title game.
As for the Rams, they should play as many kids down the stretch to see what they have -- like Stanley ahead of Hall, Looker and Bennett. But Bulger and Green have to get them through the season. Then the Big Assessment will come.
Fernando F.G.: Dear Jeff,
Greetings from Mexico city. Yesterday I was almost 90% sure that our rams would leave the Ed with the third win of the season. What happened?? I've just read Bulger's comments after the game and that's not what the fans want to hear from their starting quarterback. He must care of what fans think and say, that's why he is a professional. This guy doesn't look happy anymore in the St Louis Rams. I thought the rams were on the right path but it's a shame to loss games like yesterday's. Instead of being 3-5 now we are once again far from the division battle with 2-6. I can't understand how these professional guys don't take things in a serious way. I would love to have a contract of $65 million to prove what I'm able to do and never disappoint my love ones. I don't know if Bulger's family is happy with his play and if they love to watch him struggle every single Sunday, but if not they should start talking with this guy so he can understand that this is the NFL and not Pop Warner, he should care of people's comments because that's why he is paid with such a ridiculous contract for nothing.
Take care...
Jeff Gordon: He got the big contract based on playing at Pro Bowl level. But he won't collect the remainder of that contract playing like this.
Kyle Parnell: Hi Gordo,
Chris Duncan--Any updates on his health and professional outlook? Do you see him wearing the 'Bird on the Bat' next year?
Thx..
Jeff Gordon: It's too soon to project his recovery from a difficult injury. But where would the Cards play him if he does heal? There are so many lefties and so much depth. Even if an OF or two gets traded, this organization will still have great OF depth.
KY_CUB_KILLER: It seems the Cards really want Fuentes. How much of a run will we make for him? Chances we land him 1-100? Beimel seems like he would be a great pick-up. What do you think about him?
Jeff Gordon: Beimel is just a specialist, no comparison to Fuentes. If the Mets are indeed serious about landing Fuentes, they will be difficult to outbid. The odds could get very long.
ram76fan: so I guess I was right... Bulger doesnt care about what the fans think. and their paying him what $65 million? You pay someone that kind of money they are suppose to MAKE plays...I know ...the line play is bad..RBs are hurt..blah..blah..blah. HE IS PAID TO MAKE PLAYS!!
Jeff Gordon: Yes he is. And if he can't elevate the team went it needs a lift, then he can't really earn that huge salary. Right now divorce seems inevitable.
Dwayne: Do the Cards have any interest in Orlando Hudson? If the answer is no, please tell me why not? He's a good defensive 2nd baseman who would be the perfect impact bat in the #2 hole & would address the lack of speed at the top of our lineup. Would love to hear your opinion on the "O Dog".
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Orlando expects to make $10 million a year on his next contract. That could limit the interest, since it will be tougher to find an impact SS than a 2B. I agree, Hudson would be a good fit.
Zuke: Golf injuries, motorcycle tragedies, horrible arbitrator rulings, draft skipping owners...
Does the blues franchise have a cubs-like goat story that we don't know about.
And has anybody ever put a list together to look at tall the crazy things that have happened to this franchise. Heck, Even Denny Felsner motorcyle injury can be included-since he wasn't even riding it but managed to hurt himself.
Jeff Gordon: I addressed the litany of issues in a column after the Erik Johnson mishap. It might be a good story for the newspaper to pursue.
I forgot all about Felsner . . .
Hot Tub: In you post game chat yesterday you stated that "Some of these veterans are through here". In your mind, who won't be around next year?
Jeff Gordon: Holt, Bennett, Hall, perhaps Glover, Green or Bulger, perhaps Chavous . . . there are some pretty big names and salaries there.
Zuke: does getting Holiday make sence?
If we are overloaded in the OF as it is, would it be that much of a benefit to get him over ankiel (Net gain of 7 RBIs)? I am for it if we don't sacrafice our bullpen over middle infield.
If you want RBI impact, then renteria over Izturus (Net gain 30 RBI).
Jeff Gordon: Exactly.
Zuke: Sorry-lots of questions.
Have I been that far off base when I have sided with ownership the last few years?
After the world series, people said this team didn't sign any pitching. They did. They signed a a Cy Young and World Series winner (carptenter). Why does it not count he came from the cards? Why would it have been better to apease the fans if he pitched for some other team and joined the club?
The last two years, the free Agent market has been terrible. i have suggested patients and making a move this year. It seems like that is what the cards are going to do, is that not smart?
People say this team overvalues prospects? Well, until this year they really had none to offer so its easy to overvalue what nobody wants. And if anybody overvalues prospects, its fans. Just read fan trade proposals.
People say this ownership is cheap? However, this ownerhsip group has been in the top 10 in spending, despite paying for their own stadium and being one of the smaller market teams. Is it wrong to say they earned a little lattitude?
Also, people demand signing the top free agent pitcher every year. Ignore the cost, is it smart to give pitchers 7-year deals?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards spent more this season than the World Champion Phillies and about twice as much as the pennant winning Rays. Being smart is more important than spending big money.
jccardinalfan: Plan and simple question here....are we going to sign anyone or trade for anyone of any significance??? I hope the Cardinals are just keeping us at arms length not wanting to show everyone there cards...what have you heard?
Jeff Gordon: Expect a move at shortstop for sure. Same with the left side of the bullpen. The rotation remains a possibility. Changes will be made -- although there are a lot of kids moving into position to graduate as well.
Zuke: Are we seeing the peak of Mizzou football, or will they be able to build this success into a Big 12 North powerhouse?
With Nebraska disappearing, the title is available. Any predition on a record for next year? .500?
Jeff Gordon: Recruiting continues to go well. A lot of talent is coming back next year. Now, is Gabbert ready to win at QB? That will be the question. But he will have a year in the system under his belt.
cbensinger: I'm a huge Torry Holt fan, but if you're going to go public like he did last week; wouldn't it help your cause to catch some of those balls he dropped? Not that they were necessarily great throws; but it sure seemed like they were catchable balls.
And between his ineffectiveness on returns and his latest injury, is Dante Hall done as a Ram?
Jeff Gordon: Now that Hall went down with an injury and Stanley looked OK returning kicks, it's time to turn the page.
Tony Banks: Gordo,
Don't you think Bulger deserves another chance?
How can you be effective when you can't even scramble a yard if your in trouble?
Following Kurt(soon to be a Hall of Famer)is his worst nightmare, too bad he couldn't follow Rypien!
Go Spartans!
Jeff Gordon: Marc's lack of mobility does hurt him - although his scrambling in this game was a surprising plus. That he led the team in rushing in this game is an shocking indictment of the whole offense.
Ray: Hey Gordo:
So many people are writing off Carp for next year. I understand the nerve issue, but my question is if you are aware of any data on the likelihood of this injury reoccurring? After all, he pitched full seasons in 2005 and 2006 (if my memory is correct) without the nerve becoming an issue, and this was after the nerve was an issue at the end of the 2004 season. So, is there any hard evidence concerning the likelihood of reoccurrence?
Jeff Gordon: This is a rare injury, so there is no way to predict his recovery or lack thereof.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Did you see Renteria play in 2008? I did not, but I am curious as to how bad his offense and defense really was (this is what is being reported). Do you think another shot in STL (and the NL) will revive him?
Could you see a Renteria/Izturis platoon, in which Edgar gets some days off and Izturis comes in for defense? What type of deal will Edgar be looking for, and what type will Cesar request?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not keen on keeping a glove-only guy on the bench. Izturis can only come in to bunt or defend. You need more than that for a bench guy. Edgar lost some defensive range in Detroit, but his bat was light years ahead of Cesar.
lawdog: The Rams appear to need major help at virtually every position--but in particular LB, OT, QB. In fact, they were so thin at LB I couldn't believe we didn't draft one on day i of the draft last year.
Who do think the Rams have their eyes on to solve the problems at these positions either through next years draft (where it looks like we'll have the number one pick) or FA once this disaster of a season mercifully comes to an end?
Thanks for helping us with glimpses inside the organization like this!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams won't have a No. 1 overall pick. They will win some more games and pick around 10th. They need to start with an OT and go from there . . . many needs.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What is the REAL scoop on Jason Motte? I did not see him pitch this summer, but I have read the reports. How fast (and accurate) is his fastball? How bad is his secondary stuff? Does he have a "bulldog metality" or does he try to nibble? Do you see a significant role in MLB for him, or is he a teaser?
Jeff Gordon: High 90s fastball, OK command, no second pitch yet to set it up. He is a project still, but he can help in a limited bullpen role right now.
lawdog: Which position do you think we need to address via the draft or FA once this season ends?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams? OT, MLB, S, young QB, another RB, another CB . . . really, just about everything.
Austin: Do you see the Cards pusueing Matt Holliday if they fail or are unwilling to acquire Jake Peavy???
Jeff Gordon: They might, but I disagree with investing big money in an OF when the team has so many of them.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, Maybe Marc Bulger doesn't give a Bleep about what people thinks about his play, but the Rams did pay him around 65 Million? to insure we didn't have a rookie throwing behind, over, off their back foot, to the other uniforms, Oops, that's what Marc Bulger is doing. I guess the money might have been better spent elsewhere.
Jeff Gordon: And, going forward, it might well be.
richard rossberg: Listen I voted on line not to replace Bulger with Green, just what does that get the Rams at this point? That makes no sense to me as we are out of it! The logical thing to do is start the third string guy and see if you have something. Green is not the answer long term and if you are pulling Mark you are saying the same about him. Not to mention we would be better of with a young guy who can run for his life!
Jeff Gordon: But I'm not sure that Berlin has a big upside worth investing time in. He might . . . but I'm skeptical.
Jason from Illinois: I think the cardinals should trade B. Anderson for S. Olsen of FL. Olsen's value is down but I think under Duncan and the veteran leadership of the cardinals he can be great and he is left handed. FL needs a catcher I think there is a nice match there.
Jeff Gordon: Anderson is a nice trade chip, but I'm guessing that deal would take more than that.
fletch32: Even as far back as "Pre-Redskins" game, rumor has it there have been "rumblings" inside Rams Park that the organization's confidence in Bulger had been waning....Any truth to that?
Also since this season is most likely down the tubes, I'd be interested in your thoughts if the Rams take the best LT available in the 09' draft or trade their #1 pick for a "Brady Quinn-type" QB?
Jeff Gordon: If there is a Brady Quinn-type QB available, that would be worth trading the pick. Otherwise, yes, take the tackle.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, as much as I hate to admit it, It looks like its time to blow the whole thing up and start over. Pace needs to be replaced, a young D end needs to brought in to replace L. Little, Our linebackers are weak to say the least, Strong Safety and Cover corner also need help. The biggest question is, who to bring in at Quarterback? A rookie or a free agent? I think a rookie is a crap shoot at best, and a free agent usually has baggage or he wouldn't be a free agent.
Jeff Gordon: As I noted yesterday, even good teams turn over a big chunk of their roster every year. A bad team turns over a bigger chunk -- but true start-overs don't happen. Even the '99 Rams turned around with a lot of holdover players.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I still want Haslett back as head coach next year, but in all honestly Chip Rosenbloom needs to get the ownership figured out if he is going to keep or sell the team. I really hope he keeps it, he has made great strides, Getting Shaw and Zygmunt headed out the door after seasons end, but ownership needs settled to insure a great next head coach/gm.
Jeff Gordon: I agree totally. Strong leadership starts at the very top, ownership. Once that is settled for the long haul, the rest comes together.
Kenny: Jeff, before the trade deadline I suggested the Rams consider this season a loss and trade Holt, Chavous, Glover and Bulger for draft picks and/or players. Your response (in so many words) was that my suggestion was stupid. If the Rams go six and ten that would be an accomplishment, but would not do much in making them a play-off team in 2009. Since they did not do what I suggested then, instead of getting a first or second rounder for Holt, they will release him for nothing. Instead of getting a first and third or productive player for Bulger, they will be lucky to get a second or third rounder. Chavous and Glover will be let go and the Rams will get nothing for they. Earlier they might have gotten a fourth or fifth rounder. I guess I wasn't that stupid.
Jeff Gordon: I didn't see the trade value you set for Bulger and Holt. Torry is not Roy Williams. He just isn't. Bulger had a huge contract -- who would trade for that salary? And pay a premium.
Jerry Jones was the only guy willing to pay a premium for midseason help. He made his move for a guy in his prime.
The Rams won two games after changing coaches and they will win some more -- so staying the course was the right thing to do. I agree that veterans will exit when this thing is done, but there was no value in bailing before the deadline.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, would the Rams take a big cap hit if they cut Torry Holt at seasons end so he could get on with his career and we could spend the money on other needs?
Jeff Gordon: I don't believe the cap will be an issue at all.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, any chance of Henery Ellard getting a shot at offensive coordinator? He has done a great job with the recievers, and a move up whould help him if he ever wants to be a Head Coach.
Jeff Gordon: Ellard would help his head coaching potential by becoming a coordinator, but I don't know if he's suited for the coordinator's job. I've never heard that suggested before.
marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. do you see the Cards getting interested in Renteria, despite all the negativity coming out of Detroit? I realize he has always fared better in the NL, but the reports are that his range is gone. What's the scoop with him, and will the Cards sign him?
Jeff Gordon: His range isn't what it once was, but his motivation level here might bring back some of the old spark.
Kevin: Jeff,
Other than the playoffs the MLB off season is my favorite part of baseball. My question centers on the anatomy of a player acquisition. If a trade or FA signing crumbles at what point does the deal usually lose traction - at the MLB offices lack of approval or the team ownership.
Also, what is the hold up on retaining Russ Springer? It might cost more to replace him than it would to retain him. He adds maturity and value to the rookies that should be worth something.
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: I agree on Springer. As for trades and free agency, a GM will only go after what he knows the owner will allow. Those discussions occur ahead of time. If a surprising player becomes available, then there is a quick consultation. Sometimes the owner does say no, since big money is involved.
Mike: Gordo,
Is there any other sports team that has had the absolute terrible luck (well other than the Cubs) that the Blues have had over the course of the Franchise's history?
The hockey gods truly find fun in tormenting Blues fans.
Jeff Gordon: Lots of bad luck there. But these guys will soldier on. This is a good ownership/management team.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, What do you think about Colt McCoy at QB, and if he came out early would he be a consideration in next years draft.
Jeff Gordon: He would be a huge consideration, but he seems likely to return to school for another year. Bad news for the Big 12 rivals . . .
John Wohlfarth: Hey Gordo,
This year's clubhouse seems to be a lot more congenial than last year (Rolen, and to a lesser extent Jim Edmonds had a lot to do with this). Other than Kennedy, are there any Cardinals asking for a trade this year?
Jeff Gordon: No, it's a pretty good group. With so many kids, the place was energized. And the kids will keep making that impact, since the team is less likely to add new veteran role players.
cardsnumber7: Hi Jeff,
Hey I'm not happy with Bulger the last 2 season either but
Bulger leads the team in rushing, and it's not the o-line, it's Bulger's fault, c'mon. Sure he didn't play well. But the receivers didn't help either with the drops. The Offensive Line did absolutely nothing at all, especailly in run blocking. We need blocking, passing and running.
BTW Jacob Bell is a bust. Don't draft anymore Titans.
Thanks
Todd W.
Jeff Gordon: Bell is struggling to live up to his big ticket. That is just one of many issues.
ihateku24: What do you think the chances are that the cards would key in on a player such as furcal or hudson? In a fantasy world both would be great but isn't going to happen. Also I have heard rumors or more like hear say of Brad Penny heading to the cards, didn't the team flirt with obtaining him a couple of years ago? That deal makes since to me, because its a high risk high reward type of deal, ala carp and lohse, basically some thing the cards are prone to do. Thanks for you time.
Jeremy
New Jersey
Jeff Gordon: Penny could be a nice project, yes. As for the middle infielders, the Cards will invest money there. Furcal would be a better investment, since good offensive shortstops are harder to find.
Tiger J: What's up Jeff. Two things, let's not get down on the Rams two game losing streak. We will be alright. Secondly I being a Stl Fan stuck in KC. I get it all the time. But when the Royals go out and start trading in makes my stomach churn. Please DeWitt, don't get fruit that has been sitting at Soulards to long.( It's rotten)
Jeff Gordon: Not sure what that means . . .
Big Jack: The rams loss yesterday at home against the Cards was the final curtain on another bad season of football. The playoffs are now gone.We dont expect a BLEEP BLEEP Superbowl ring every year, but would it really kill the owner and management to put a competitve product on the field of play ??? There is no end to this nightmare. Not by a longshot and not for a long time.
Pathetic. Could someone please appologize to Bulger, if not, he will throw all his passes to the Jets.
Jeff Gordon: That is a harsh reaction. Just two weeks ago fans were talking playoffs. You are never far from turning things around, no matter how bad you are.
drebly32: Is there any possibility the rams would go after Nnamdi Asomugha in the offseason?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will go after players at almost every position. This is why they have to win some games down the stretch, to be attractive to free agents.
warreng2k1: Hey Gordo,
What would be your strategy concerning the draft if you were making the picks for the Rams? What holes do you see that need addressing? Any specific names?
Jeff Gordon: Start with an OT and go from there. We've been saying that for weeks. And the play of this line this season underscores that. Tackles are hard to find.
Petey123: Jeff, in your opinion will Chip own the Rams next season and any rumors of any local interest in buying the rams. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Rush Limbaugh is one guy with the dough. Beyond that, I'm not sure if there is anybody readily availability.
Jim Wigton: Gordo,
Who will be a good for the closer's role now Izzy is a free agent?
Jeff Gordon: Perez showed me everything I needed to see. He and Fuentes would be great combo.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, I am not trying to compare Bulger to Warner. It is not fair to either one of them. But the best thing to ever happen to Warner is getting away from John St. Clair at right tackle. I personally blame him for us dumping Warner and thinking he was through. He is one of the biggest busts all time at right tackle.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, fans forget that No. 13 suffered from battered QB syndrome for a while. "The Beast" was anything but.
Franklin!: Thoughts on Mark Worrell in the 2009 'pen?
You're the best,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: If he's around, he would be a depth guy. A lot of hard throwers ahead of him.
drebly32: Do you see drafting Patrick Chung out of Oregon a good second round pick to possibly replace Corey Chavous?
Jeff Gordon: All the reports on him are good. This will be a deep safety class, so it is possible somebody good could fall to the second round.
clark1911: when will david koci enter in lineup janssen cant fight everbody
Jeff Gordon: Cam has pretty good wheels and he can hit. The Blues seldom need a true heavyweight fighter. Koci is there for that role, but Cam is a more complete player.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, the last thing we need is Rush Limbaugh as owner. This team would really be the laughing stock of the NFL with this fool as owner!
Jeff Gordon: I don't agree with Rush, but I knew him back when he worked with the Royals. He knows sports and he is smart enough to hire good people.
TechnoPhobia: Jeff, are the Cardinals still interested in talking to Izzy?
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather have Springer. Jason is a great guy, but how could he help this team?
Joe Stafford: Jeff, what is the status with the dome? How many more years before the Rams could opt out? I'm not interested in seeing them move again, I'm just trying to figure out who might be interested in buying them and relocating to their home market.
Jeff Gordon: The dome will get some upgrades, some of them interesting. The next five years will be interesting. We'll know if the team will be here for the long haul after the next owner settles in.
Kevin: Jeff,
What percent of a roster needs to be turned over year to year on an MLB club. Several winters ago I recall Jocketty mentioning that he did not turn a roster enough. Something about hitting the refresh button that engergizes a new season.
Also, would the Cards be more likely to bring in someone like Pavano over Looper? It seems like letting go of Looper, Izzy and Kennedy would help with the roster turnover idea.
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: Pavano is a dice roll, but his upside is far greater, obviously, than Looper's. As for the player turnover, we'll see some other guys depart besides Kennedy. There is a glut of infielders. That must be sorted out.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, i like Steven Jackson, but with runningbacks available every year in the draft, couldn't the money have been better spent. I think he tip toes through the Tulips a little too much instead of just running people over with his size ans strenght.
Jeff Gordon: I'm a Jackson fan, but this injury and those dropped passes added more disappointment to his resume. Can he stay healthy? Can he play well every game? Is his head into it?
Sid Disney: Jeff,
Thanks for doing these chats.
Wanted your opinion on a few players and whether you think they are keepers or busts as far at the Rams' future.
Barron
T. Hill
Klop
Carricker
Leonard
Cogs
Jeff Gordon: Barron -- Just average, but a keeper because tackles are hard to find.
T. Hill -- Bust.
Klop -- Bust.
Carricker -- Keeper.
Leonard - Bust.
Cogs -- I'd like think he is a keeper, but . . .
cards27: hey jeff, thanks for your time.
First, i realize a lot of fans are sick of us trying out low risk/high ceiling deals, but is there any potential interest in the Cards signing Mark Prior to a low base/high incentive 1 year deal? If he can pitch or start at all near his potential he'd be a good backup for our Carp situation, if not he could be the guy to replace Thompson in long relief (or at least have a faceoff for that spot with Boggs)?
Secondly, will it be Wallace or Freese taking over for Glaus in 2010? Is there room for both somewhere in the lineup by then?
Finally, Mo mentioned in his chat that if Colby shows up and plays well he'll be in a Cards uniform opening day. Do you foresee this happening?
Thanks again!
Jeff Gordon: The Cards took a run at Prior last year -- and they were glad they missed. This club is out of the physical rehab game. They have enough injured players to worry about as it is.
Freese could be the guy in 2010, yes. He is right on track. If he keeps this up, the Cards could spend money on somebody else.
Colby will be a Card next year, at some point, unless the team deals him. And that is unlikely.
thejager: Hey sir!
What do you think of this:
Skip and Anderson (and throw in Ryan if they will take Kennedy and half his salary)
for
Antonelli and K. Greene (we take all the salary)
is this too much, not enough? SD doesnt seem to havea future catcher and we coudl use a future 2bman and SS
Jeff Gordon: Not sure the Padres are THAT eager to move Green's salary, but this is a thought. Greene would be an interesting gamble.
renostl: Jeff
The Cards are always wanting some "payroll flexibility" With the current make up of the starting pitching and nobody who is ready to step up from the minors if/when a SP goes down there seems to be very little of this flexibility.
Do you think that the Cards would be best served both long term and short term to trade from their excess of OF and RHRP for a young SP still trying to make it maybe one who is falling out of favor in their current home like Reyes was here.
Jeff Gordon: Sure, if they can spot a younger guy early in his earning process, then go for it. It IS hard to spend a ton on more than a couple of starting pitchers. That's what the team means by flexibility.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, does Brock Berlin have any playing value? Would it be a goo idea to start him for a few games toward the end of the season to see how he does, or is he a career backup at best?
Jeff Gordon: Things would have to be pretty bad for that to happen. Berlin had a great preseason, but I'm sure if he is a prospect. But then again, we said the same thing about Warner way back when.
ric: Jeff: Why didn't the Lambs ..I mean Rams try an onside kick after they're 2nd touchdown? They knew they couldn't stop the Gridbirds anyway so why not try it w/ 12minutesw left?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: That game as over. O-V-E-R.
Joe Stafford: Jeff, any chance of Eddie Debartlo (Spelling) buying the Rams? He made the niners winners for years, and probally do the same for the Rams.
Jeff Gordon: He has expressed some interest in getting back in the game and he has noted the potential sale here. But would the league take him back.
dingo: why is mark bulger still a ram. why not go after a good quarterback??
Jeff Gordon: The $65 million contract has something to do with it.
pulen527: The Orioles are looking into a new shortstop and really want JJ Hardy. The Cardinals really want Brian Roberts. Could there be a possibility of a three way trade, with Roberts coming to the Arch, Hardy going to the sea, and Daniel Cabrera and prospects (from both teams) going to Milwaukee?
Jeff Gordon: The O's seem committed to Roberts and signing him to an extension right now. But we'll see.
Gary Nguyen: Jeff,
The game is won in the trenches. It does not matter which QB is put behind our OL. The QB will get creamed by other teams. Why not play Brett Romberg, Greco and Schuening? Our OL is pathetic. If there's no protection, it does not matter if Kurt Warner is behind our OL because he too will get hammered by opposing defenses. Will the coach hear this?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams do need to block better. Are the kids ready? Maybe we'll get a look later.
Kyle: Hi Jeff,
Thanks for taking my question...
I'm putting you on the spot but where do the Blues go from here? Scoring is becoming an issue as of late (like last season), Stempniak has yet to turn the corner (a key to getting this team back on track), one of the rookies the club looks to make a showing (Oshie) has gone down for probably a month or so and Brewer is NOT solidifying the defense core like he should (most fans favorite whipping boy). It's early enough to make some changes so the team doesn't lose precious points that may be harder to obtain later in the season. Do they cut their losses and Stemper for another scorer or a reputable D-man? Do they flow guys in from Peoria and hope one comes to life? They are at a fork in the road so where do they go from here?
Thanks for your insight.
Jeff Gordon: Stempniak looked great in the preseason. The Blues need to get that back, especially with Oshie out.
That's it for this week -- talk to you all again Sunday.
Gabe: If the Blues do not provide a more consistent effort, how much longer will Andy Murray be behind the Blues bench?
Jeff Gordon: Murray will be on the spot of the team doesn't stay in the hunt. He doesn't have to make the playoffs, but he has to keep the team moving forward.
That looks like it -- see you Sunday.
