DisCard: The Holiday thing still confuses me. Wouldn't the Cards be better off waiting until the Peavy deal is settled? If he doesn't go to Atlanta the shortstop slot could be filled for years to come by making that deal. Despite Holiday's desire to annually contend, Boras will pressure for bigger offers than the Cards will likely make. So, it's a one year rental. Assuming the Braves get Peavy, couldn't the Cards ask for a chance to negotiate with Holiday before making a deal? What's the hurry? Are the Cards competing with some other team offering a 37-homer hitter who might hit 50 in Coors? Wasting Ludwick, even the player from 2 years ago, for a one year rental makes little sense to me. Add in the budget factors and again I am totally confused by this proposal.
Jeff Gordon: I agree. Boras will shoot for the moon with Holliday. He will set the market with Ramirez and Teixeira this year, then follow that with a huge deal for Matt next year. Getting Matt to sign an extension as part of a trade would be a very difficult. And even if the Cards did pull that off, does the team want to invest all that money in an outfielder with so many hard-to-fill needs elsewhere?
Escobar would be a nice get from the Braves, but he seems to be the key to their Peavy package. If Jake goes elsewhere, the Cards ought to make a big play for Yunel.
SammyG: This.. was... awful
Jeff Gordon: The Rams game? Agreed.
Tim: I know the cards are going to be getting left handed help for the bullpen but what about right handed help. Id like to see them pick up Juan Cruz, he would be great for the bullpen and a nice closer opthion in case perez doesnt work.
Jeff Gordon: The right side is loaded right now, with Perez positioned to close, Motte on the rise, Franklin on hand for the eighth inning, Kinney mended and McClellan capable of doing some more heavy lifting if he isn't needed in the rotation. Both Springer and Izzy want to come back, too. To me, Kinney is the key to whole thing. If what we saw at the end of the year is how he'll pitch next season, he would really help.
Tim: If we get Holliday do you still se them trading for either Johnson or Escobar?
Jeff Gordon: The Holliday thing is on hold, as Joe Strauss reported. The Cards could go free agency at 2B, spending the money on Hudson, then save all their trade assets for a shortstop. In addition to Escobar and Khalil Greene, Julio Lugo, J.J. Hardy or Maicer Izturis could also be had in deals.
Secret Sauce: What went wrong in the Holliday deal? Was it Mo thinking that he was giving up too much or was it the Rockies thinking they did not get a sufficient offer? Or did St. Louis think that they simply could not afford Holliday after next season? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: If Colorado wanted Ludwick AND Schumaker in addition to Mitchell Boggs for a one-year rental, THAT is what went wrong with the deal. If Holliday is determined to test free agency, then the Cards would get blown out of that bidding.
Larry: Jeff...in watching the Jets, the Falcons, and the Dolphins, all pathic teams last year, and now all very competitive and contending teams in 2008...In your option was the main cause for their quick turnaround compared to what the Rams did the off season? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Look at the coaching and front-office leadership. Also, look at the huge investments the Jets made in quality linemen. All three teams got better at QB, too, with Favre, Matt Ryan and Chad Pennington all providing upgrades.
Those teams provide examples of how turnaround can be achieved. Have a plan, sign and draft the right guys and get busy.
Larry: Jeff...what was the main reason for the Holliday trade now being off the radar? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The Rockies want an awful lot for a one-year rental.
wotownramsfan: dear jeff, i was at the game yesterday against the jets at the meadowlands and i've got a lot of problems with the way this team is run. First off my biggest problem is O.J. atogwe dancing with the cheerleaders when they are down 27-0 during a timeout. Also, does Torry Holt even care anymore? Coaches were trying to talk to him and he doesn't even listen anymore. Get rid of them all including haslett he must go as well. The only player who looks like they care every play is Chris Long. Get rid of Jackson, Bulger,Holt, Barron, basically everyone what a disgrace they are to players who make millions of dollars to play football.
Jeff Gordon: Get rid of "basically everyone" and you're looking at 0-16 next season. And players like Jackson, in particular, would star elsewhere. In the cap system, you can't fire a team. You have coach up the team and turn it over in stages.
People need to cut Atogwe some slack. He's a nice player. The game was over before it started.
NAZRamFan: Gordo,
Fortunately I was spared any live TV of yesterday's Rams game, but the writeups here and elsewhere do a good job of describing the horror. My question concerns on-the-field leadership, as in do the Rams have any? Just who are the Ram players who get angry and show emotion on the field and on the bench during debacles like this? Who are the Ram players who get in the face of their teammates and challenge them to pick up their play? Clearly Bulger isn't a fiery, emotional leader, so who picks up his slack?
Thanks as always for your response.
Jeff Gordon: That game was over before it started. Guys can stomp around and put on an angry act, but the team needs real on-field leaadership -- not sideline posturing. We'll see how many (if any) leaders this team has during the next seven weeks.
Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,
After yesterday's debacle in the Meadowlands, do you see Haslett making major changes to the starting line-ups?
Trent Green didn't exactly light up the scoreboard, but the offense appeared to respond better under his hand, then Bulgers.
Holt was been a non-factor for several games running and with Looker healthy enough to be on the field, I wouldn't be surprised if Holt took a tumble down the depth chart.
As for that pathetic excuse of a LB corp, can Vorba, Stills, and Chamberlain really do a worse job then the guys they are backing up?
Thanks again for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Stills is just a special teams guy, albeit a great one. Vobora saw some action Sunday and didn't make a big mark. What I remember of Chamberlain from the preseason was not especially encouraging. But, yes, there may be some lineup changes as Haslett tries to get the attention of his plays.
Matt: Gordo,
Do the Cards have any interest in trying to sign Jon Garland? He's always been a winner and it seems like the Angels may not re-sign him since they'll be trying to bring Mark Teixeira back, along with possibly trying to sign CC Sabathia.
Jeff Gordon: He would be a great fit. He did a nice job in his walk year, for sure. If the Cards are going to spend money this winter -- and it appears they will -- then targeting another starter would be smart. Why throw a ton of money at an outfielder?
Let's see where the money goes with Garland. It could get huge, which would increase the risk.
Justin Scully: Hey Gordo, thanks for taking a question from a Cards fan in Canada.
The Blue Jays have a superb bullpen and are interested in moving BJ Ryan.
BJ had Tommy John two years ago and showed strong signs that he has just about returned to full health and effectiveness. He is a lefty closer who brings a lot of intensity and leadership to the pen, the Jays need a young third baseman to replace Rolen at some point and obviously Riccardi and Mozeliak can get a deal done. Is this plausible BJ Ryan for David Freese?
Jeff Gordon: David Freese and what army? Ryan pitched well after his repairs last season, so I'm guessing that bidding on him would go high. It would take a package including top pitching prospects and an everyday player. Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi insists that moving Ryan isn't a top priority, but he make check the market after K-Rod and Fuentes relocate.
Rick: Hey Gordo, really appreciate your insight on the Cards. A couple of things, when is the date for salary arbitration to begin, and why don't the front office go after some consistent arms "that are sound" like a Joe Blanton (who has not missed a scheduled start in his 4 years in the majors) instead of taking the chance "again" on rebuilt arms? I realize that Carp is worth the wait but another debacle liike Clement and Mulder would be sickening. Use the young talent to trade for him or some other of equal value. Rather spend 5-7 million on proven arms than other positions,
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Blanton is arbitration-eligible and I'm guessing that Philly will try to extend him. Getting a solid pitcher away from a contender is tricky. But I agree -- if the Cards can add a solid veteran starter for $7 million per year, that would be a wise investment -- versus renting Holliday for a season.
kevin bryant: Can we stop sugarcoating the problem with the Rams and stop blaming the players and the coaches. This team lacks overall talent due to the front offices ineptness to keep young talent. You cant replace good young talent of the likes of Kevin Curtis, Ryan Pickett, and Brandon Chillar with free agents. You win by keeping around good young developing players. These guys become the core of your team and besides you drafted them. Now we're gonna be even worse because we're gonna lets guys like Atogwe and Bartell walk also. Look at franchise that stay competitive like the Eagles they resign theyre young guys early to have a core group. They all dont have to be superstars but a team is made up of a few go to guys(ie. Jackson, Holt) and alot of very good young players. ( bartell, Atogwe )The front office has failed this city, and the players by letting good guys walk(Chillar)
Jeff Gordon: Player retention, to me, has been as a big an issue as the draft issues. Fans complain endlessly about the draft, yet some Rams draftees move on to other teams and perform well.
As for some of the current players fans want to jettison, many of them would be just fine elsewhere. The Rams need to fix the environment first. Establish strong leadership at the time. Devise a plan. Follow through, follow through, follow through. In that environment, a lot of these knuckleheads would come around.
ChagallGuevaraCardinals: Hey Gordo,
From what you can gather what would you say the Cardinals interest level is on Orlando Hudson? I've read numerous reports that say he's going to want at least $10 million per season. He's coming off of injury...shouldn't his price be down a little bit because of that?
Also, if it were up to YOU...
Would you rather see the Cardinals move Ludwick or Ankiel in a potential trade?
Jeff Gordon: I'd trade Ankiel, all things being equal. Ludwick is three years from free agency and Ankiel is one more left-handed bat. Hudson will be in demand, so $10 million won't be out of line for him.
Ross: How close were the cards to obtaining Holliday? What was your impression of the proposed players?
Jeff Gordon: Hard to say how close the Cards were, but I would not have traded two everydaym, inexpensive outfielders and young pitcher to rent Matt for one year.
Ross: Has any progress been made towards acquiring a middle reliever or middle infielder?
Jeff Gordon: When free agency opens up this week, you'll see the pieces come together. Guys like Hudson and Furcal (an unlikely Cards target) could be in play.
Josh: I know we touched on this a little bit yesterday, but what specific moves should the Rams make either before the end of the season or during the offseason to possibly right the ship? I think number one needs to be almost a complete overhaul of the front office and anyone that makes personnel decisions (lets be honest, in a real job if you made that many mistakes you would have been fired a long time ago). The coaching staff needs to be next. It needs to be evaluated and the new front office needs to bring in their guys who have a winning attitude. Then the players, they need to be evalutated top to bottom as well. What's your take?
Jeff Gordon: All that is obvious. Chip Rosenbloom will have a new leadership structure next season, assuming he still owns the team. It all starts with that. Change must come from the top down.
bill weber: Hi Gordo: Are you aware if the Cardinals have ever approached Baltimore to discuss Brian Roberts before they resign him and what the O's might want in return if interested in dealing Roberts. He would be a PERFECT fir at second and solve our lead off problem?
Jeff Gordon: The O's seem committed to extending Roberts. If the team can't get that done, bidding on him would be fierce. Baltimore would want the world -- impact everyday player, position prospects, pitching prospects . . . three or four assets, for sure.
There are multiple options at second base, so the Cards wouldn't spend all their chips on Roberts.
vikelt: Why is the front office apparently down on Izturis? Hadn't he been hampered with injuries the past few years. This year he continually improved til it appeared he was back to his 2004 play. He ranked high in the fielding metrics and in the second half of the season hit .293 and stole 16 of 19.
Jeff Gordon: All in all, Cesar did even better than most of us expected. But Izturis scored 50 runs and drive in 24. That is HORRIBLE run production. Imagine how much better the Cards would be if they could get 140 to 160 RBI from their middle infielders.
therealdealankiel: Can we realistically afford to lose Ludwick if we aren't getting a proven bat in return? As much as I like Escobar, the guy is good for 10 HR's, 70 RBI and NO speed. I know he's a great defender, but we can't afford to lose 37 HR pop! Please tell me MO isn't considering this deal...
Holliday is the only player on the market I'd consider losing Ludwick for...if we can't get him, and extend him, I'd like to see Ludwick in left, Schu/Rasmus in center and Ankiel in right in 2009. We had to know when they asked for Schu they were asking too much!
Jeff Gordon: That deal would presume that other OFs would replace Ludwick's power -- with Rasmus assuming a starting role and perhaps Duncan and Mather getting some swings. I'd rather deal a lefty bat to get middle infield help, given the dearth of RH-hitting outfielders.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
In my opinion, the Cards have tipped their hat to the league and their fans. They wouldn't have gone after Holliday if they didn't feel they could extend him. For the right player, DeWitt and Mo are ready to trade and spend. If we don't come out of the off-season with an All-Star caliber addition to 2B (Hudson), SS (Escobar/Furcal), the rotation (Sheets/Lowe) or the lineup (Holliday), fans are going to go nuts...which is why Mo is so salty about the info being leaked, I'm sure. Based on your knowledge, how "dead" is "dead" on these Holliday talks? I know Strauss hinted that they could come back around later in the offseason.
Jeff Gordon: Until Matt is traded, he will be in play with the Cards. But "Mo" will be looking at all other options as the free agent marketplace opens up on Nov. 14.
The Cards will spend money and make moves, one way or another. There are a lot of ways to get the payroll back over $100 million and there are a lot of ways to spend the surplus OFs and extra 3B prospects. The Cards have no choice but to reallocate their assets to balance up their roster.
playmaker: I understand there is still 7 games left in this season. But only three of those are against teams with a .500 record or worse (49ers twice and Seahawks). And with the Rams terrible play over the past 25 games, I think it is safe to say we can start looking to the 2009 offseason. Let's say this Rams team goes 2-5 down the stretch and finishes 4-12. That would most likely land them a top 5 draft pick. So my question to you is this.
Jeff Gordon has been named the Rams GM for the 2009 offseason. How would Gordo rank, in order, of finding the following players replacements in the 2009 offseason.....
Orlando Pace's replacement at OLT
Torry Holt's replacement as a #1 WR
Marc Bulger's replacement as starting QB
Leonard Little's replacement as a edge speed rusher
Corey Chavous' replacement at SS
A #1 CB
A True MLB
Jeff Gordon: OT is the top priority, since this draft provides help. And I'd extend Alex Barron, believe it or not, because at worst he would be a trade asset later on.
The team also needs to settle its QB picture, one way or another, and get much stronger at LB.
I'd start Johnson for Chavous at safety and shop for his replacement.
I see Burton replacing Holt in-house.
The Rams hope Long because a top DE, so they can put Hall and Adeyanju on the other side as Little heads for the twilight. It will be tough to invest in an edge rusher after giving Long all that money. Too many other needs.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Do you see any way in which a Ludwick for K. Johnson or Y. Escobar straight-up trade makes sense? I understand they are good at what they do, but come one...this offense cannot afford to lose any pop. Unless of course, we are that confident Duncan, Rasmus or Wallace can contribute 30 HR's next season.
Jeff Gordon: What is Ryan Ludwick, really? Is he a 25/85 guy in reality, better suited for the No. 2 spot with 450 to 500 ABs? Or is he a legit everyday slugger? That is the question. Other teams are skeptical, but the fact he is three years from free agency gives him some value. Also, he is a fine defender.
The Cards must find room for Rasmus, a potential 25/85 guy. Duncan, if healthy, could be a 25/85 guy too.
And if you replaced a 24-RBI shortstop with a 70-RBI shortstop, you take a big step.
Perry Hinds,Auburn,AL: Gordo,
I know they are saying the Holliday talks are dead, but that doesn't mean they won't rise from the dead later on. I don't mind the Holliday for Ludwick, Schumaker & Boggs scenerio (if they can extend Holliday 2 or 3 years anyway), but I would like to see it expanded to include Clint Barmes & Taylor Buchholz. Barmes had 12 hrs w/less than 400 Abs last year & if they resign Lopez to play 2nd we could have 30 hrs & 120 RBIs out of the middle infield positions. Buchholz could strengthen the bullpen (his appearance & pitching style reminds me a lot of Wainwright). I'd also re-sign Looper for insurance & go for Fuentes & a FA starter. With Miles & Ryan to back-up the infield & Mather & Barton in the outfield, the starting line up of Rasmus, Holliday & Ankiel with Pujols, Lopez, Barmes, Glaus & Molina would be formidable. I'd offer Duncan (who could play 1st & allow them to move Helton & his salary) along w/Peniero to sweeten the original deal.
Jeff Gordon: The Rockies tries to extend Holliday for four years, in addition to the $13.5 million he is due next year. Holliday wanted six years instead. So, again, the stated asking price was too high for a rental.
Barmes might be an interesting reclamation project, although I'm not sure about his defense.
Duncan has no trade value coming back from his injury. Pineiro has no trade value, given his '09 salary.
Pete: Hey Gordo,
Thank God the Holliday talks have quieted down. Made no real sense for us other than to make a one year splash. Wouldn't it make sense to trade Ankiel before Ludwick, given the dearth of right handed outfield power bats we would have without him. Plus Ankiel has proven the larger injury concern rather than Ludwick since he's joined the organization. Ank's a 30 homerun guy at a premium position when given sufficient (healthy) ABs. I would say he has a very tradeable and marketable skill set. I wouldn't mind giving up him straight up for a Kelly Johnson type and a good A ball prospect. Also, who is your favorite non-Fuentes closer and left hand relief FA's?
Jeff Gordon: There are no "non-Fuentes" closers worth talking about, really. K-Rod is just waiting to break down. The other lefties are set-up guys, hard to differentiate.
I agree on Ankiel but the fact he's a year removed from free agency hurts his value. Ludwick has more value than I assumed because he is three years from free agency. That offsets some of the "one-year wonder" concerns.
But I would keep Ludwick, who will be a real value for those three years.
Sarah Pringle: Now that Andy Pettite is a free agent, do you think the Cardinals will show any interest in him?
Jeff Gordon: He is used to getting HUGE money and his health is always a concern. He would fit the profile of a perfect short-term addition, of course, but I don't know if he would ever agree to a budget-friendly deal.
Kevin: Jeff,
I do not buy the Cards dropping out the Holliday derby just because the story was leaked. Is Mo going to be able to pull significant deals or just create sound bites/headline teasers? With significant players available all around is it still more probable Mo will end up going the safe route and land low down and rehabbed fruit?
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: The issue is, what price would the Cards pay for Holliday? And the answer is not "two everyday outfielders" and a young pitcher likely to contribute in 2009. Too much for a rental.
ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Thanks for doing these chats. I never miss them.
I am a huge proponent for obtaining Escobar from the Braves. Young, great arm and range, high OBP, and has shownan ability to drive in runs. If we have to trade Ludwick for him I do it. The organization would have that position covered capably for years to come. Obviously, the Cardinals have an abudance of outfielders. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: But if the Braves win the Peavy sweepstakes, it appears Escobar would be in that package. These deals are all intertwined.
Mark: Mr Gordon
Looking at the Cubs projected lineup compaered to the Cardinals makes one quite sick.
Projected Lineups
Cubs Cardinals
Starting Pitching (OMG)
Peavy (Cubs likely leader now) Carpenter (Who knows when he pitch again?)
Zambrano Wainwright
Dempster (wants to stay in Chi) Lohse
Lily Wellemeyer
Harden Pineiro
Bullpen
Wood (wants to stay in Chi) Perez
Marmol McClellan
Wuertz Thompson
Samardzija Motte?
Gaudin T. Johnson
1st - Lee Pujols
2nd - DeRossa Kennedy (wants OUT - good)
SS -Theriot Miles
3rd - Ramirez Glaus
C - Soto Molna
RF - Soriano Schumacker
CF - Johnson Ankiel
RF - Fukedome Ludwick
So what positions are the Cards better than the Cubs at?
Cub starting pitching blows us away, Their bullpen is better than ours (but does that take much), Cards are better at 1st and RF, Cubs are better at 2nd, SS, RF. 3rd and C are about even. Cards are better in CF if Ankiel stays healthy.
These 2 teams aren’t even close!
I mean Cubs are looking at bringing in Peavy and bringing back Dempster and Wood and the names most mentioned with the Cardinals are Renteria, Punto and Affeldt. You got to be kidding me??
This is just more of the same stuff every year. Get the fans hopes up and then - oh we just fell short or the famousof all, don't worry he will be ready by spring training or well he wasn’t quite ready for spring training, but getting him back will be the Cards big trade deadline deal.
I’m sick if this year in and year out and I just don’t understand why the fans keep filling the seats when ownership does nothing to help the team, but pick up players off the scrap heap and pronounce them all-stars and the fans keep buying it.
Please give me some reason to be optimistic this season!
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: That's assuming that Cubs get everybody they want -- like trading nobody for Peavy -- and the Cards will do nothing. The Cards will do something and Cubs will still have issues, like Zambrano's long-range viability, Soriano's horrid defense and mindless demand to lead off, Wood's health, Harden's health, Fukedome's late-season flop, so on and so forth.
Who will own the Cubs in '09? And how will that owner operate the team? Pretty big questions. The Cards owner has won a World Championship and has a pretty good plan for the future.
Willie: Gordo, Thanks for the time. I love the hot stove talk every year, even though I know 90 out of 100 reports or only speculation. Still that one rumor that becomes reality and getting to see your team make that big move in search our next WS ring makes it all worth it. Anyways my question is about BJ Ryan. Wouldn't he seem a good target for management to pursue? He would be obtained via the trade route, which seems to be our preferred option this season. I think he only has a 2 more years on his contract at roughly 10m per. Though thats a lot, I really think Fuentes will get more years and more dollars per when its all said and done. I think we might get him reasonably as I've heard Tornoto might be dumping a little salary to make a major play at a couple other big names on the FA market. What have you heard? What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Toronto is downplaying such speculation, but you never know. But would Toronto deal with the Cards after getting robbed in the Rolen trade?
ihateku24: Hey Jeff,
This disturbs me a little! Even if the talks with the Rockies were just of intrigue, I think its a deal Moz should have pulled the trigger on! When was the last time the Cards made a move for an impact player.....? The last one I remember was for Jimmy " Ball Game " Edmonds. (I'm talking off season deals only, not mid season trades) In my opinion if that was the three players the Rocks wanted it sound like a pretty good deal to me. Listen people I love Luddy and what he did for us last season, but who's to say he isn't a one year wonder, maybe he's not? So my question's for this week are 1. Do you think the asking price was worth it? 2. Is this a thing where maybe in a week or two this deal does go down? 3. Even though we seem to have a good working relationship with Boras, is a sign and trade the real hold up here, or could it be Boras?
thanks
Jeff Gordon: This guy was a rental. So for those three players, it was a bad deal. Deals like that can create big long-term holes in your organization.
Last year's Rolen-for-Glaus deal was an impact move. The Cards added 33 doubles, 27 homers, 99 RBI and a steady 3B glove for an oft-injured malcontent.
Scott: Where do you think the Cards stand on Furcal? I gotta believe he would be a huge upgrade both at the top of the lineup and at short. He would give the Cards much needed speed at the top of the lineup and fantastic range and a tremendous arm at short. Also, is there a chance for Grudzielanek to make a return to St. Louis?
Jeff Gordon: I think fans like Mark more than the front office right now. The three homers and 24 RBI in 331 at bats sounds like what this team got last year from their various half-timers.
The bidding for Furcal will be intense if LA lets him hit the market. Teams like KC and Toronto are more likely to overspend for him.
joie: Glad to see Mo backed away from Holliday deal Ludwick Boggs and Schu were too much to give for one player especially when Ludwicks stats seem to match what Holliday could provide and now would love to see Mo concentrate on getting Kelly Johnson or Orlando Hudson but barring not getting either for whatever reason what are your thoughts on Jerry Hairston Jr. he would seem to be reasonable cost wise and though a shortstop can play many positions and be a decent leadoff or number two hitter
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather have Hudson, who does seem overpriced, or Johnson, who could play in St. Louis for a long time and add the desired run production. The Cards already have guys like Jerry Jr.
Jeepster: Jeff: Is John Mozeliak an intern? The reason I ask is it seems he's unable to close a deal. We've heard year and year that the Cards are in pursuit of that elusive "impact bat". Well, it's out there now in Holliday. The deal was on the table and it sounds to me like Mozeliak actually thought the asking price was too high (lol). What's going on?
Jeff Gordon: He won't make a stupid deal to make fans happy. In a season, when Holliday left as a free agent, the Cards would have gotten a nice draft pick for him. That's it.
Have you already forgotten the Rolen-for-Glaus deal, one of the best in recent years? Or Edmonds for Freese, one of the top 3B prospects in baseball?
ramhntr: Jeff-
You are probably inundated this afternoon with critical comments about each facet of Ram personnel. Bulger, Holt, the offensive line and the entire defense will be the main targets of mad Rams fans. We'll hear over and over again about poor tacklng and lack of offensive production. There will be numerous calls for Hasletts head at the end of the season. Are Holt, Pace and Little just too old? I can't argue with any of these observations-all appear to be valid with this sorry franchise. Ram players are not getting it done-either through lack of talent or a sheer lack of competitive spirit (maybe both). But it all starts at the TOP in any business or organization-and the top management has failed miserably. Poor free agent and draft decisions are currently haunting this franchise. Shaw and Zygmunt-shame on you. I realize you have one foot out of the door-please go away!! Chip and Lucia need to make a commitment to winning in St. Louis with top notch football people in the front office. Until that is done this franchise will continue down a path of futility. Come on Chip-it's up to you.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, it is up to Chip. It all stars from the top.
Little, Pace and Holt are in the twilight. At least one of them will be gone next season, perhaps more -- given their high salaries. Let the retooling begin!
Matt in West Co: How long does Andy Murray have to turn this ship around? Is there too much youth on this team or just not enough talent? I can't put my finger on what is wrong with this team, they seem to work hard but can't get it done.
Jeff Gordon: The team simply MUST clean up the play in its end. Murray has some time because of all the teenagers playing, but Davidson needs to see the team move in the right direction this year. As long as the effort is there and the kids are progressing, Andy should be OK. Perhaps J.D. needs to shuffle the defensive deck.
Ryan: Anyone else ready to wave the white flag on the Blues' season? I wasn't expecting the playoffs, but I wasn't expecting a last place finish in the conference either. I am thoroughly disgusted with the whole team. 1-6-1 in their last seven? I don't care who is injured, that is unacceptable. So, Gordo, the question is, how do they fix it? Do they consider this season a wash and let the youngsters play even if they stink? Or do they fire Murray and hope someone else brings a spark? How about a trade? What do you think, Gordo? Are you as disgusted by this group as I am? Once again, the Blues are a laughing stock and proving the experts right.
Jeff Gordon: It is way too soon to give up. This team is playing an unprecedented number of kids. That is not an excuse, but it is a factor. Losing Oshie and Kariya at the same time is tough. Losing Legace was tough. Losing Johnson was tough. On the flip side, getting Stempniak going again was a huge step and I like Berglund's progress.
The next few games will be tough, but then the team will have a chance to stabilize.
Rita from South County: Hi Jeff,
Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions every week!
Is it just our T.V., or do the Rams plays always look like they take a longer time to develop? Whether they're on offense or defense, they hardly ever seem to play at the same speed/tempo as the opposing team.
Also, my husband, son, and I were talking about how our lines usually look smaller than the opposing lines. Maybe the players realize this when they're watching game tape during the week, and know they're overpowered. So, they just give up on those games before they even start playing.
Last, how many more times will the Rams open the game with a running play?
Even we at home know this play is coming.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams were definitely overmatched in this game. The Jets invested heavily in their lines and you saw the payoff. The Rams have lots of work to get done there.
Austin: Since it looks like a possible Ludwick- Holliday deal is dead does that mean that we can spend money on a Orlando Hudson or some other well known players at our needy positions. Can you give me what you think or next move could or should be and who we could acquire, thanks
Jeff Gordon: The Cards should deal from the OF pile to get a shortstop, unless the front office believes Renteria has one good year left. Hudson or Kelly Johnson would upgrade 2B, but SS should be the priority, followed by LH relief and starting pitching depth.
There are lots of possibilities out there. There are many shortstops available by trade, including Greene, Lugo and Hardy. The Cards have some decent trade chips to play with.
This winter will be interesting.
Austin: Since the Holliday deal is dead does that mean we will take another look at Peavy??
Jeff Gordon: It appears they lack the pitching prospect to make that happen. The Cubs, Braves and Dodgers are all over this.
Mike: Jeff,
Thanks for taking the time! I was wondering if you had any information on prospect David Freese being cut from the Venezuelan league? I know he struggled his last couple of weeks there, but it still seems a little odd that they would just cut loose a player of his caliber. I know how seriously they take their baseball over there, but he still had 3 homeruns and 8 rbis, just seemed to be going through a slump, and after being off for a month or so I would think they would cut him a little slack. What is your impression of that? Thanks alot,
Mike
Jeff Gordon: Winter ball is a weird deal. Everybody has stories of some goofy things that go on. David really didn't need the work, given his strong year in Class AAA ball. He could step in next year if Glaus got hurt.
deebox: Hey Gordo I hear the cardinals want to trade for Holliday, thats fine but just a little info on this trade. Wasn;t holliday hurt some part of last year. And isn;t ludwick a better fielder and have a better throwing arm.One other thing every body wants to trade anderson, for my part molina is waring down a little. Laruso played molina to much last season, and before we trade off anderson we bettwer make sure yadi can hold up. We need bullpen help not offense, and please don;t get rid of freese because our pressnt third baseman shoulder is not going to hold up all season.
Jeff Gordon: Ludwick is a better defensive player, yes. As for Molina, he played the right amount. Anderson could fill in this year if Yadier had a long-term injury, but sooner or the later the Cards will have to deal him. He can't be kept on the shelf forever.
Mike Gambill: Is it going to be an off season like all of the pasts? Are we going to keep hearing that we just missed out on that guy or they wanted too much. It seems that every season we keep hearing that the Cards are going to be aggressive, but we always hear the same excuses. Do you think that we will get Matt Holiday or what other impact bat do you see. Thanks!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Before last season the Cards made one of the best trades, getting Glaus for Rolen, and one of the best FA signings, adding Lohse. There were home-run moves. So was dumping Edmonds for Freese, who is a blue-chip prospect. And Lopez was one of the best in-season additions.
Mozeliak knows what he is doing.
ballhawk32: Gordo:
I was at the game yesterday. Obviously, an embarassing defeat not even worth discussing.
What was troubling to me is Rams are down 30-0 in the second quarter.. ball on the 5 yard line..Jets going in again, and during a timeout, OJ Atogwe is dancing next to the Jets cheerleaders in the endzone. If that wasn't bad enough, in the second half, now down 40-0...he's dancing again and shadow boxing to the Rocky theme song during a timeout.
Is this guy kidding me...what a joke!! Did he even know or care what the score was? Here's a guy who's done nothing....and will be remembered for getting smashed in the face and losing his helmet to a Ladainian Tomlinson stiff arm. You see players on winning teams doing this?? No.
Jeff Gordon: Atogwe is one of the best players on the Rams, a border Pro Bowl candidate. I can see why fans complain about his dancing, but that game had been over for an hour. Discard this guy and you're another step closer to 0-16.
Pwaltz1977: Jeff,
I am a Rams fan living in Colorado so I have only seen parts of a few Rams games this year. I enjoy reading all of your columns and chats etc. Us out of staters do appreciate it.
I have read that you believe the Rams would be best served drafting an offensive tackle with their first pick in this year's draft. Do you think the Rams will cut ties with Pace or Barron after this year? Is either one of them playing particularly poorly? I assume that if the Rams drafted an offensive tackle with their first pick they would not do so with the idea of him being a backup in his first year, would they?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: I'd draft a tackle and keep the other two. IF Pace stayed healthy and IF Barron woke up, the Rams would have wonderful trade leverage. Odds are, though, that the Rams will need help there.
KY_CUB_KILLER: How serious is the interest in Orlando Hudson?
Jeff Gordon: It's serious, but the Cards won't spend crazy money on it. Second base is down the list of things the club must fix.
RamLuke: Its not haslett or saunders fault, jets ran basic plays dive left, and dive right, for 20 yards. the rams don't have enough good players, to make up for the bad ones. I hope haslett doesn't hold back when they watch the film together today. As for Bulger, You can't play this game scared. your thoughts.
Jeff Gordon: Bulger was a mess, again. It's not all his fault, but he has given in to the circumstances. The Rams need a QB who can rise above it.
WPB Redbird: GORD0-
I've read some of these chat sessions with the GM and I am wondering...whose editing these responses? Isn't there some statistical data on urban pedestrian cycles during the 2nd new moon of the white tail rutting season...or something...i don't know...there is no substance. JM won't discuss anything of importance and instead it seems to be a forum for JM to fire off his short wit on the fans who bleed red for Cardinal Nation. If this is how he treats his fans...I'd love to see the backroom mockery the other GMS must laugh over beers in what a goober we've inherited in Cardinals front office. He's fed us the rhetoric about being aggressive and updating that which needs updating...but yet...wait and see while we're at it. Am I the only one not drinking the JM kool-aid?
Jeff Gordon: A GM cannot speak with great candor about the player he has under contract. That is managerial suicide. Also, he cannot tamper with other team's players by commenting on them. That is against the rules. This leaves little leeway for the chat.
Are the Blue Jays laughing about the Scott Rolen deal? Did the Padres guffaw after spending a blue-chip prospect on Edmonds, a player they quickly released?
Did everybody in baseball mock Mozeliak for paying $4.5 million for Lohse, one of the most productive '08 free agents?
Probably not. Despite suffering catastrophic injuries, the Cards gained eight games from '07 and kept all their top prospects in the process. While other GMs were quitting or getting canned, Mozeliak hoarded his talent and just cleared $30 million from the payroll.
I expect his peers take him more seriously than you do.
DTails87: I'm not completely blaming Andy Murray for the Blues play recently, but the team is not playing well and something needs to be done. I don't believe there is a good player available via trade right now so I say fire Murray and see if it sparks the team. It can't be much worse than it is right now.
Jeff Gordon: Firing the coach of a young team in mid-November makes no sense. Again, watch the effort and follow the progress of the kids. Those are the real indicators of what sort of job Andy is doing.
Fans got too excited about the fast start. And now they are too upset about this slump.
JC: Gordo
With the Cards apparently out of the Holliday discussions what is the next move? We have alot of needs and I think it is hard to tell what we will do overall until the 1st step is made (or 2nd since we did sign Lohse already). What are your thoughts on us making a run for Roberts and Sherrill in a deal with the O's? That would take care of 2 needs with 2 solid players.
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what other teams really want to do. Baltimore wants to keep Roberts, or so the team says. Colorado could come back to the Cards on Holliday, since not many other teams were offering a big RBI bat for the guy.
The start of the season is many months away. Mozeliak sits in a good position. He can afford to be picky.
DTails87: If the Blues do fire Andy Murray, who should be the new head coach?
Jeff Gordon: There is nobody out there who is clearly better. Fans need to settle down.
Denim Dan: Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time. I am a big Matt Holliday fan. I think he is a tremendous ball player and he would look good with a birds on the bat uniform. However, he just didnt fit into the plan. If the cardinals were going into the off season with a huge gaping hole in left field, then I'm all for it. The outfield is one of our strengths and we already have enough depth there. Ludwick is also way cheaper and I couldn't see DeWallet giving Holliday Albert Pujols money...Whats your take on that? And besides the Furcal, K. Johnson, Escobar, and Hudson what other potential middle infielders do you see the Cardinals pursuing? Thanks for taking my question...
Denim
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have done a nice job re-upping key players -- Wainwright, Molina, Pujols, Carpenter and, unfortunately, Izzy and Mulder before that. I'd rather see that stability and big-money signings and big-player departures.
Holliday would cost a ton, long-term. The Cards have lots of OFs stacked up. Their needs elsewhere are more glaring. All sorts of candidates out there for middle infield, including short-termers like Renteria.
bjwstl: Hey gordo,
Couple of Cardinal questions for u. First off, hows chris ducan doing, and will he be ready for spring. How about tyler johnson. Also how about going after prior for a million to see what could happen. Is it true Shumaker came up at second base, if so why not try him there. Last but not least what about trading glaus(he might be at the height of his value) and letting freese start or playing freese in the middle infield.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Why trade Glaus and his 99 RBI? He's got a year left on his contract, which allows Freese, Craig and Wallace develop in due time.
Duncan says he'll be good to go for the spring. We'll see. Tyler is a definitely maybe. We'll believe it when we see it. Given Prior's injury history, why give him one of the 40 roster spots and bump somebody else.
dej: Gordo How are the home game cap colors chosen?
In choosing players during the draft do they still use the "slot" term when considering how much it will cost to sign a pick, it seems that the club has not used the high draft choices to get pitchers that would demand a large signing bonus.
thanks dej
Jeff Gordon: No idea on the cap choice.
As for the draft, teams consider the slotted salary as a guide. But some pitchers want to bust that slot and they succeed. The Cards passed on top pitchers to take Kozma for that reason -- and that was a mistake.
Derek: I just wanted to ask what the chances are that we can pick up Shannie. I think he is someone who can give this team a spark as well as the fans. Fill the seats right, and make some noise for these guys to pump them up and lets get back into the playoffs.
Jeff Gordon: But Shan the Man shows no interest in coming back to the Midwest.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
What are the chances of a Hudson-Renteria middle infield in St. Louis next season? I would like to know if this supposed Hudson interest for real and if the Cards indeed have an interest in bringing Edgar back. What kind of dent in payroll would these two make?
Jeff Gordon: Hudson wants $10 million per year for four or five. Renteria might do one year for half of that, in the right situation.
redbirdswin: I know you're a fan of the Cards signing Brian Fuentes, but outbidding the Mets will be close to impossible. That said, who do you see as the best alternatives to fill the LH bullpen spot(s)? Affeldt? Ohman? Rhodes?
Jeff Gordon: Those are all worthy set up guys, but none could be a ninth-inning guy. That is the beauty of Fuentes.
B-Ball Fan: I do not understand why so many Cardinal fans want to keep Ludwick, Schumacher, and Boggs instead of trading for a proven ball player in Holliday. I would make that trade in a minute, but that is why I am not the GM. I know Holliday would need to be signed to an extension, but Larry Walker loved it at St. Louis after he came from Colorado. I think we could win Holliday over also and Holliday is not at the tail end of his career..
Jeff Gordon: But Walker didn't want a six-year deal in addition to the $13.5 million left on his deal. To me, that is a huge deal-breaker -- since Boras isn't likely to give St. Louis a friendly discount.
old cowboy: Hey Jeff, went to 1st college football game @ Mizzou Sat, and of course Maclin is incredible, I did think the offense really missed Coffman but I love the play of that freshman left tackle. How good do you think this kid can be?
Jeff Gordon: To me the line is a mystery. The Tigers manhandle lesser teams, then get physically overwhelmed by the top Big 12 South teams. The jury is out on the returning players.
HEG: Gordo I will not attempt to expound upon the play of the Ram's team; my advice is for the Ram's to attempt dumping the high salary players for draft choices or just releasing them in the manner of the Raider's; Re; the Mizzou Tiger's- be aware and do not fall into a trap for the final 2 games.
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't follow the example of the Raiders on anything. That is a mess. Some of these guys fans want to dump could be salvaged. Some. The tough call will come on older dudes like Holt, Pace and Little,
BrotherBri: Gordo,
Thanks for all you do. We know how hard it is to sit here and deal with all this griping.
That said, I have to say I'm growing of tired of you and J.T. saying Haslett won't start Romberg, Greco and/or Schuenning because he's "playing to win". Clearly, three straight fiascoes from Bell, Cogs and Leckey have shown that there are no holes to run through and no protection for any QB, which means that you absolutely cannot win with them.
From my vantage point, most football players (at least those not of the Moss/Owens/Ocho Cinco diva variety) seem to be warriors filled with intense individual competitive pride. Others seem to be team-first guys determined to earn the love and respect of teammates and coaches. And the rest at least long for the chance to have their play earn them the big paycheck that makes them set for life. These three carrots motivate most to work insanely hard to improve technique, strength and unit chemistry. But when the carrots fail to lead to hard work, or when that hard work fails to lead to better play, then it's time to get out the sticks.
The first stick ought to be losing playing time. The loss of the respect of your coaches and teammates, not to mention fans and loved ones, ought to serve as motivation to turn up the intensity and focus. If it doesn't, more playing time should be lost, to the point where future pay is endangered. And if there is still no improvement in work and/or play, then the coach has to be willing to use the other stick -- loss of job. If the coach is unwilling to hold the players accountable, they lose the room. If they become afraid to lose, as Linehan did, they can destroy the organization.
I don't want to hear about Haslett needing to win to have a job next year -- that's turning him into being afraid to lose. I want to hear that the worst O-lineman (Leckey, in the apparent opinion of most) is taking a seat, and that the other two are being rotated out once and awhile, both to rest them and to get the youngsters started. I want to hear that a player like Klopfenstein, who simply isn't going to make it on this team, is hitting the streets. I want Bulger sharing first-team snaps with Green, as a message that he won't last the first quarter playing as he did against the Jets.
This year is officially over. The time to take the hardest cap hit is now. The time to restore accountability and integrity is now.
The organization has used up the carrots. Time for the stick!
Jeff Gordon: Haslett IS coaching for his life, so he will play the guys he believes are best. People want to see Greco and Schuening simply because they haven't played yet and haven't been manhandled yet. To me, that doesn't qualify them for active duty.
Any coach can bench players. But you can't bench everybody -- and Haslett has to turn some of these guys around to keep his gig.
Mark (Chicago): Hey Gordo. Looking at the NL central next year, do you see the Cards making the necessary moves to compete for the pennant? I think many agree we have some glaring needs (SS, LHP, 2B, possibly SP), but do we have enough on the farm and in payroll flexibility to make this happen?
Also, do you think the Cubs will land Peavy and how much will that affect your view of the division? I think the Cubs fans learned a lesson in humility last year, but I would love for the Cards to get back to their proper place in the standings. Being a Cards fan while living in wrigleyville sure is tough when the Cubs are winning the division. Will my suffering end in '09?
Jeff Gordon: The Cubs could make a move on Peavy, but can the get him AND pay up for Dempster? If so, that will be something to contend with.
Don't forget, the Padres will ask for plenty for Peavy. This deal will cost the team plenty.
marty: I would love to sign Orlando Hudson instead of wasting Ludwick on Kelly Johnson. Hudson is a better defensive player and still a force on offense. I would much rather deal Schumacher and Ankiel for other needs. I dont feel that Ludwick is a one year wonder. What is your reaction to this scenario?
Jeff Gordon: Pair point on Johnson -- second basemen aren't THAT precious. I'd put all the resources into the shortstop hole.
Mark (Chicago): In your opinion, what is more important to the Cardinals in '09, getting a top tier bat to protect Pujols or landing a top tier middle infielder to bat at the top of the order in front of Pujols?
I was also wondering when you think the Cards will start talking contract extension with Pujols. I know we have him until 2011 (at least) and there are health concerns, but I am curious. Any thoughts what he would look for in terms of dollars and years from the Cardinals?
Jeff Gordon: Albert would need $20 million-plus for another four or five years to commit. That is doable with this fan base.
To me, adding two run producers in the middle infield trumps the need for an "impact bat" at a position where the team already has good production.
cardsfan4ever: Hello Gordo.
My question is why in the world would we give Lud, Shu and Boggs for Holliday anyway? Why not just sign Edgar, Lopez, and Fuentes, then wait and see on the starter like we did last year when we got Lohse? If they are so interested in trading outfielders do something with Ankiel for Jenks from the White Sox I know he is right handed but he can close. With him and Fuentes we shoulded loose as many in the ninth which would put us in the playoffs.
Jeff Gordon: I agree with your perspective totally.
Horrell123: Thanks for taking my question.
I was wondering what you thought the opening day lineup would look like in your opinion? Also do you think there is any chance that we couldn't get ordonez from detroit somehow?
Jeff Gordon: Ordonez could exit Motown because Detroit wants to hold payroll at $130 million and the Tigers have other needs. It would be interesting to see what Magglio oculd do on Albert's team, in his clubhouse.
As for the opening day lineup, man, that is really up in the air. Sounds like "Mo" is moving away from my guy Felipe Lopez, looking for a longer-term solution there. That shows me he really is aggressive this winter.
Anthony: Whats your thoughts on this XM Radio Blues restructuring comment?
Jeff Gordon: Didn't hear that? Ownership restructure?
nick peterson: The odds are it looks like Ryan Ludwick will stay with the cardinals what is the future for Rasmus? The outfield is crowded and if he can't break the opening day roster doesn't his stock fall as a prospect considering he wasn't anything special in tripple A last year?
Jeff Gordon: He'll make the team next year, sooner or later. Mozeliak WILL trade outfielders, one way or another. That WILL happen.
cardsnumber7: Hi Gordo,
How many college offensive line's are better than Rams? How many of our guys would start on any other team? BTW Pace did a good job of letting that guy run free and crush Bulger for a fumble return for TD. Does the offensive line have any pride?
Sorry had to vent, just can't believe we run those guys out there every week. Thanks for doing this every week.
Thanks
Todd W.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, nice blitz pick-up by the future Hall of Famer. That sums up the team -- one of the leaders just falling down on the job. These guys are better than this.
Rounder Rick: Which SS or 2nd baseman can we get for Schu or Duncan (or both) and prospects? We should not trade Ludwick. We should not trade Ankiel. Rasmus should be in CF.Ankiel in RF. Luddy in Left. Mather and Barton could be reserves in OF or Barton sent to AAA if you keep one of Schu and Duncan. Would Schu, Duncan, and Boggs work for Tulo or Roberts? Escobar? Duncan should actually go to a team that needs a 1st baseman or DH.
Jeff Gordon: To get one of the middle infielders you want, you'll have to spend Rasmus (unlikely), Ludwick or Ankiel (if a team will take him with a year left) plus other assets.
Duncan has little trade value. Schumaker and Boggs are throw-in guys, since Skip is more of a fourth outfielder type.
As for all the middle infield targets, we've touched on them at various points in this chat.
Griff21: I don't understand all the love for fuentes & holliday. geting either would break the bank and getting both would be near impossible. other articles were written on the concern of having so much money tied up in the rotation. so why would you advocate adding an extra 30M plus to the payroll? Ludwick reasonably will get around 5M probably near the same for Ank. those 2 plus Shu, Mather, Barton, & the great Rasmus & a call up or 2, all combined will make less than what it would take to pay holliday. holliday's numbers at coors are impressive but he is only average to good everywhere else. not only do you have to pay holliday but you have to deal off prime talent. certainly not a solid investment.
Fuentes would go as a top notch closer and bidding will get insane. while you have to pay for fuentes you still lose draft picks. again a lose lose situation.
Jeff Gordon: One way or another, the team will have a $100 million-plus payroll. There are many ways to get there. I'd spend for Fuentes, because he is a hammer at the end of games. He will make just a tad more than this team paid Izzy to not close games last year.
Holliday I agree about.
Peter North: Gordo, How serious is Mo's interest in Escobar?
Jeff Gordon: He has huge interest. The guy would fill a huge offensive hole.
Cash: Hey Gordo,
What's up with Mo? He seemed pretty upset that info about a possible Holliday deal was leaked. Why does it have to be a big secret? Also, I have heard that he said no to what the Rox were asking for in return (Ludwick, Schu, Boggs). Any idea what Mo was willing to give? Thanks!
- Cash
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak doesn't like having his guys' names in the headlines as trade bait -- because he made not trade him. Then how does it make that guy feel?
I'm guessing he would move Ludwick and lesser lights -- not a quasi-starting OF in Schumaker and a majors-ready young pitcher -- to get Holliday for a year.
SoundwaveSTL: Gordon
I think I'm going to use this quote and apply it to our current situation. With all the changes now in place. "I think it's like adding a featherduster to the end of a duck and trying to pass it off as a peacock. In the end its still just the same lame duck, only more ridiculous then before." Tell me it can't possibly get any worse?!? Also tell me where do I submit my form, to become the new QB of this team, or if we have some QB's on this team, can you ask them to please show up this Sunday. Are there any win-able games left this season? If not i might take up a new hobby, such as building card houses, creating the biggest wad of chewed up bubble gum in the world, maybe setting a record for the most times spinning in a bar stool, just to pass the time until next season.
Thanks!!
-SoundwaveSTL
Jeff Gordon: There ARE winnable games, especially against the Niners. The team will need better QB play and I don't know what I would recommend from the current group.
BGCARDFAN: Jeff, Anyone from the Cards indicate how the payroll might have changed if a Holliday deal did go down?... had they decided to bump it or scrimp around it?
Seems a big change in philosophy if they have made the decision to boost payroll.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The payroll will be 100 million-plus, not too far over. So Holliday's $13.5 million would have taken a big chunk out of that. There are a lot of ways to get to the same number.
rockintheburbs: Hey Jeff,
With the Rams season over and the Blues not having the best of times right now. I've been wondering if you think the Mizzou or SLU basketball teams have a decent shot at the Big Dance. It finally looks like Mizzou is ready to turn the page and SLU can be a force in their new arena and if the players buy into Majerus' system.
Jeff Gordon: Mizzou could take the step to the NIT, thanks to Lyons and Carroll coming back and the added depth from a solid recruiting group. Majerus is poor-mouthing his team because of the seven freshman, but I'd expect a winning season. They are likely better than the seventh best A-10 team.
JC: Gordo
Any word on exactly what we were balking at in the Holliday trade discussion? Mo said it was the package not the money aspect. So I am curious if the speculation of Ludwick, Skip and Boggs was the accurate package that was being discussed and what the Cards exec's didn't like? Was it a specific player, did they think that was too much to give, etc? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Too much to give, as we've discussed. Holliday is a rental.
rockintheburbs: What are your thoughts about brininging Marcus Giles into spring training and seeing if he has anything left?
Jeff Gordon: The yesteryear Giles with power might have helped this group, but now I don't see the upgrade.
rockintheburbs: Which goalie do you think has performed the best so far this season Manny, Mason, or Bishop. I personally feel they have all been below average.
Jeff Gordon: Legace was very good before getting hurt. Let's see how well he moves after that hip injury.
Adam: Gordo,
Thanks for taking our questions! How much interest do the Cards have in Yunel Escobar? Would they consider trading Ludwick for him, or would Ankiel+ suffice? If they do infact make the trade of Ludwick for Escobar, what will they do to adress the even greater lack of protection for Albert? Or, the lack of left handed power if we trade Rick?
Jeff Gordon: If they could deal Ankiel for Escobar and plug in Rasmus, Albert will be surrounded by a nice offense. There would also be an upgrade at 2B, one way or another.
Griff21: The blues aren't this bad, its a shame injuries to key players have exposed us. even more concerning is the lack of call ups. Oshie goes down and we plug in Stastny. not thrilling but almost acceptable. Kariya goes down and we plug in Koci?? Not to say he doesnt have a role on the team but if one of your top guys goes down instead of shuffling up everybody why not bring a prospect in to fill in , who can maybe score a goal? Lemmy? porter?
Jeff Gordon: Porter is a solid grinder, but there is no offensive depth at Peoria this year. This is an area where the Blues need to improve.
Griff21: when will we get to see Junland on D? our recent losing ways are a clear indication something needs to change. also is there a more definitive timeline to our injured players other than Oshie( awhile) Kariya( day to day) et al?
Jeff Gordon: Junland played very, very well at Peoria. It won't be long now.
jkoch25: Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time to do these chats. They're great. Answering questions for fans of teams, it's great. And that leads me to my questions: do the Cardinals have any interest in Javier Vazquez and/or Bobby Jenks? Also, would the Padres and Cardinals consider trading bad contracts (Pineiro for Greene) if the Padres do in fact land Escobar?
Jeff Gordon: Pretty dicey, those two. My guys in Chicago suggest Javier is a bad bet for the coming season. He may be a reclamation project before you know it.
rich: Why are Cards fans and some in the media so hung up on getting Edgar Rentieria? It's been 5 count em 5 years since he left here and he left he's best game here when he did leave.
Jeff Gordon: Old as he is, he would get more than 24 RBI next year.
Keith: Gordo,
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions. What do you think of the play of Brewer and Jackman? For the life of me, I have no idea what the Blues see in Brewer. We've had great captains in the history of the Blues and in my opinion Brewer doesn't fit the bill. Do you think the Blues will do anything with him this year or at least take the C away from him? I just don't see any hustle from Brewer or Jackman. Jackman was one of the best defensemen when he came into the league, but he has really regressed. Thanks again for your time.
Jeff Gordon: Way too many mistakes from those two. That is why the team is struggling to earn point despite offensive upgrades. It's not all on the D, but these guys need to lead and clean up back there.
coyo625: Would the Braves have any interest in Ankiel instead of Ludwick as the center piece for the Escobar deal?
Jeff Gordon: Ankiel's proximity to free agency makes him a different case. But that would be a better deal for the Cards, for sure.
Josh: Gordo,
What do you think about the Cardinals so far this offseason? I don't want to call it treading water but where is the commitment to improving a mediocre team that is so close to being great. Were the Peavy and Holliday deals that bad for us? Is Mo afriad of making a Mulder-like deal so early in his tenure? Is St. Louis just overreacting because they are fed up with how their sports franchises are run in general (outcry for change in all 3 organizations)? Any insight to any of this?
Jeff Gordon: The free-agent marketplace hasn't even opened up yet -- the Cards can't even talk to them yet -- and people are writing off the offseason. Geesh.
kingoftruth: if the Blues fade out of playoff contention by Jan or Feb, could the team deal some vets for young talent and/or draft picks?
if so, which vets have any value to contending teams?
Jeff Gordon: Sure -- Tkachuk, Kariya and Legace would have value. So might Brewer. But I don't see the team going there.
Jeepster: Jeff: What are the Cardinals going to do about the closer situation? Huston Street is a name that's being kicked around a lot.
Not that I actully anticipate them doing too much but one can hope.
Jeff Gordon: Street brings large injury concerns. He is pretty iffy.
Jeepster: Jeff: For the love of God, please tell me there's no chance of Isringhausen coming back.
Jeff Gordon: Well, he wouldn't necessarily close.
Josh: What's scarier: the possibility of Peavy added to an already solid rotation or the possibility of the Cardinals running out the exact roster from last year on opening day?
Jeff Gordon: You won't see the same lineup Opening Day, that's for sure. Expect change.
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
Now that the Holliday thrill is gone do you think Mo will be reaching into his recipe book to concoct a dish for Escobar? After all, I'm hearing that the Braves are out of the picture for Peavy. Who do you think the Cards would have to give up to get him?
Thank you Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: The Braves love Ludwick, so . . .
Josh: Gordo,
Rams record at the end of the season?
Jeff Gordon: 5-11 -- and that's the Haslett call really tough.
Griff21: Introducing the Palin Effect... after her appearance we are 1-5-0-1, we've gone thru 5 goalies, and forwards are dropping like flies. We fell from a middle of the pack team to the basement.
I appreciate the organization trying to get more PR but maybe they shoulda given Biden a call.
Bring in a priest cuz we are now officially cursed
Jeff Gordon: Can't blame Sarah. The veteran D and veteran GT must get better.
Kevin: Jeff,
You have repeated the line that Holliday would be a one year rental. Did the Cards not intend to extend him beyond next season? No way they trade all that for a one year player. Was Boras unwilling to make a contract extension happen?
Ludwick strikes out a ton and it seems that Holliday might have a better shot at intimidating opposing pitchers into pitching to Albert whether Holliday hit homers or doubles. Just a thought.
I would think the Cards would have to give attention to dealing Glaus if a team like the Dodgers, Angels or White Sox come calling. Glaus, Anderson and Boggs for Buehrle and Jenks could be interesting.
Thanks,
Kevin
Jeff Gordon: The Cards could intend to extend him all they want -- but if that isn't done as part of the deal, then Holliday is a rental. Period. Boras is the agent. Holliday is a VERY high-end player. This isn't like landing Larry Walker.
Chris: Is the chance of a Shanny reunion pretty much dead?
Jeff Gordon: Yep, pretty much dead.
Russell: I do not understand the great concern to improve the middle infield, and get an impact bat. The cardinals were first in batting avg., fourth in runs, and 2nd in on base percentage. If Ankiel was healthy, and Glaus didn't get hurt towards the end of the year we could have had 4 100rbi players. While Cesar wasn't a wunderkind with the bat he was better than expected and we don't need 9th place hitters for RBIs. If we had a closer we probably would have made the play-offs, even won the division. Shouldn't we work to get a lefty reliever, a closer, and a starter.
Jeff Gordon: Those are all needs, but so is a more consistent offense. Can't give away every third inning and get to the playoffs. Cesar was better than I expect, but still . . . 24 RBI. Not good.
Reno: Being Realistic who do you think the cardinals will pick up. IS troy tullowitzki a viable option. Can we accuire kelly johnson. How about burnett, sheets or a 3rd starter. What will we do about a bat behind pujols or a reliever to patch up our shaky bullpen. Thanks for taking my question
Jeff Gordon: Burnett is too pricey, Sheets too injury-prone and too pricey. Troy could be an interesting target, IF it is even doable.
Griff21: Don't touch the OF. Lud is ours for another 4 years? Ank another 2? Shu is cheap too. Barton, Mather, Rasmus ours for awhile too.( one of Rasmus or barton would be in the minors at any given time) that crew could stay in STL on the cheap for awhile I say we take em. Dunc who knows. for the time thats the best value we can put out there. so make trades if you will from prospects or pitchers but leave that crew alone!
Jeff Gordon: Something has to give, because Rasmus is going to be in the big leagues next year. Wallace could make bigs by later summer as a OF, too, if he doesn't pan out at 3B. Jones, Mather, Robinson, Stavinoha -- the prospects really stacked up this year.
joeswimmer: Gordo,
Who was the genius @ Earth City the determined Kris Jenkins was washed up and not worth signing
Jeff Gordon: The same guy made all the ultimate calls on free agents. Hence the need for change.
JC: Gordo....little Cards talk. What are your thoughts on us making a run at The Big Unit? Would it take around 7-8M for a 1 yr deal (Good short term investment)? Also (this is a big what if scenario) if the Braves and Pads did not get a deal done for Peavy and we somehow were able to pry Escobar away from the Braves....what kind of 2B would be a good complement to a player like Escobar? Would it be wise to still go after Type A Hudson or would we be more likely to go after a Renteria type...or deal for a 2B? As far as LHRP my thoughts is don't get in on the Fuentes war as it would take at least 4 yrs to get him at at least 11M a year. If you don't trade Perez and you think he is the closer of the future (whether '09 or '10) why make this type of acquisition? Why not let Perez take the closers job and sign a few solid LHRP like Affedlt, Ohman, Beimel, D. Reyes, etc? Also your thoughts on Tom Gordon if his option is not picked up as a closer type short term deal? Thanks for taking my Q's!
Jeff Gordon: Gordon . . . nah, not as a closer. I'd rather have Perez, Kinney or McClellan there if there isn't a proven closer in hand. Chris is a little wild, but he has the makeup.
Fuentes might cost you five years at that dollar. Lotta dough, but he is unique.
We've talked about the other guys.
Rounder Rick: Gordo "The Cards could go free agency at 2B, spending the money on Hudson, then save all their trade assets for a shortstop. In addition to Escobar and Khalil Greene, Julio Lugo, J.J. Hardy or Maicer Izturis could also be had in deals."
How about Schu and Anderson for Greene or JJ Hardy? Duncan and Anderson? I know you don't think Schu has much trade value and a lot of others. But he is a four tool player with a little bit of pop as well. The only thing against him is hitting lefties. And Duncan is a potential core guy for us so why couldn't he be a potential core guy for another team.
Jeff Gordon: There are some assets there, for sure. Anderson is a solid get for another organization. Schumaker isn't a stud, but he has some value. Duncan . . . maybe not . . . but there are other guys to move.
HoustonCardsFan: Hwy Gordo Aprreciate the chats,
Alot of speculation about Luddy goin to Atlanta, I am hearing about Escobar +1, who do you think that would be Hanson would be a stretch but if we throw in Freese who knows??
Also what do you think about a Kelly Johnson Lillibridge package?
Jeff Gordon: If the Braves won't trade Hanson for Peavy, they are trading him for Ludwick and Freese.
Griff21: Miles was on a one year contract wasn't he? he should be a priority for us to resign. he is possibly our most underrated player& he can pitch too!
Slim to none , im sure, but what are the chances we will bring back any of our FAs?
Jeff Gordon: Cesar they don't want back. Miles could be a nice backup, if the team moves Kennedy. I'd take Springer over Izzy and I don't see room for more than one of those two. Looper is a fall-back if nothing else shakes in the rotation.
therealdealankiel: And it's over. The Oakland A's acquired Matt Holliday.
Jeff Gordon: If that is true, St. Louis weeps.
Chris Hall: Hi Jeff,
Thanks for taking our questions!
A couple of questions, Any ideas on who the cardinals or looking at for in the infield positions? Also do you think they might check out Kenshin Kawakami in Japan?
Jeff Gordon: Kenshin Kawakami wants to come to North America, but I don't know where the Cards are spending money there. The team poured a lot into Latin American talent.
Justin: Gordo-
Yes, Fuentes is a lefty, however he does not really fill our need for another lefty reliever.
We all know Tony loves his defined roles. His closer will ALWAYS pitch the ninth. If, we sign Fuentes and plug him into the closer role, we will need another LOOGY because Manning cannot pitch everyday.
Maybe I'm wrong, but Fuentes wouldn't really meet our need for a lefty reliever.
Thanks,
Justin
Jeff Gordon: Well, he could close. So there's that.
Rounder Rick: The Cards could go free agency at 2B, spending the money on Hudson, then save all their trade assets for a shortstop. In addition to Escobar and Khalil Greene, Julio Lugo, J.J. Hardy or Maicer Izturis could also be had in deals.
Can you rank these in order?
Jeff Gordon: Personally:
Escobar, Hardy, Lugo, Izturis, Greene.
JC: Gordo - In case you haven't heard Jon Heyman at SI.com is reporting that Holliday has been traded to the A's. Details are unknown at this time.
Link: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/11/10/heyman.holliday/index.html
Jeff Gordon: Thanks for the update -- the A's? Really? That is interesting. I figured a contender would rent him for a year.
alex: This regards our idiotic front office......When the Jake Peavy rumor first broke out, we heard the cards might be a front runner...wrong! A few days ago we heard the cards are the front runner for Matt Holliday...WRONG! After promises front MO and Dewitt of a "creative and promising offseason" I've come to wonder will we get that impact player theyve been talking about? I know a lot rests on what happens with Chris Carpenter within the next few weeks, but in all reality have you heard any LEGIT rumors?
Jeff Gordon: Rumors are rumors. I know what the Cards plan is and what the team will give up to get certain commodities. If there is a fit, Mo will make deals -- like he did for Glaus, like he did to move Edmonds, like he did to get Lohse signed . . . so on and so forth.
Again, the free agent marketplace isn't open yet.
SoundwaveSTL: Gordon
You said better QB play, which QB would you recommend to start this Sunday? I say let the 3rd stinger in and throw something and lets see what happens..cant possibly get any worse right? I'm willing to have them try anything at this point.
Thanks as always
-SoundwaveStl
Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure Berlin is the answer, but some more mobility would help.
Brewer_Jackman_Exposed: Jeff, Hedman or Tavares.....who do you pick if the Blues win the draft lottery?
Tavares will sell more tickets and give JD another year to sell fans on the future but since Brewer is untradeable Hedman may be the smarter choice long term.
Also, tell JD to fire AM and sell, sell, SELL!!!
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to sell. As for the next draft, I'd still go with Tavares.
Griff21: I know this isnt going to be popular but... What about Izzy? As a Card his days are probably over.I'm sure a player with his credentials will get a look somewhere. i hope the best for the guy, & would like to see him pitch again & reach ( at least ) the 300 milestone. where might he end up?
Jeff Gordon: I can see bringing him back in the old Percival role, but not to close.
therealdealankiel: Solid deal for Billy Beane...adds an MVP bat, if they go on a run, great. If they falter, he's mid-season trade bait, and at the very worst he takes a couple draft picks when he signs elsewhere.
It's as if Dan O'Dowd would rather do any deal than take Mo's criticism that he leaked names...
Jeff Gordon: Beane is a great GM . . . but he has never had a parade. He should have lots of good young players to move, having dumped so many high-end guys over the years.
Cards Fan in St. Pete: Looking at the Rays, they have a surplus of starting pitching, with Andy Sonnenstien and Edwin Jackson the most likely to be traded. Rays need right field help. Do you see a match up to pry one of those starters to STL?
Jeff Gordon: A lot of fans are hyping Edwin. That could be interesting. He does have a nice arm.
Anthony: Have you heard anymore on TJ's recovery? Is he going to get back in there soon? The Note is NOT the same without his "dog on a bone" efforts. They look like a bunch of shot-happy guys hoping the net net will not be covered and they will somehow get some points up on the board...Go Blues BUT wheres the enthusiasm
Jeff Gordon: He's a month away, probably. That is a shame.
hugeCardfan: Agree with your defense of Mo. He seems to have done a superb job up til now and I too think the package as discussed was too much for a rental. Also seems that Ank was a better fit...from Cards perspective...and more reasonable expectation for Rockies. If we threw in Mather and Boggs then it might have been a fair deal.
Still want more attention paid to 2d and short. What's your best guess?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, throw in Mather and maybe you have something.
Mozeliak has lots of assets. He'll reshape the roster. Fans want it done yesterday, but that won't happen. He can pull the trigger, but he won't make deals for PR reasons.
alex: of all the SP avaialable who would you like to see the cards get?
Jeff Gordon: Penny, for little money, would be good. Lowe would be the best, but it will cost plenty.
Scott: With Holliday now an A where do you see the cards focusing their attention?
Jeff Gordon: Middle infield, LH relief, starting pitching are all bigger needs than LF.
Griff21: The cards should give pujols a blank check and tell him to write in whatever number he wants on it and they will pay him. he is a franchise player and needs to stay a card until the day he dies, hopefully not for a long long long time. after his playing days end I can easily see him taking on the coaching duties one day. he is so good he just makes everyone around him better. if you watch or listen to him anyone would learn a ton.
Jeff Gordon: Blank check? No, but $20 million plus per year.
Matthew: Thanks for taking the questions.
I would like to know why the cardinals aren't thinking about trading Glaus. He had a heck of a year last year. His trade value is higher than it has probably been in the last 5 years. The Cards could really fill alot of holes with a package around Glaus. They also have some upcoming 3 baggers that could replace him. Thanks for the info.
Jeff Gordon: He has a year left on his deal, so he could help a contender . . . but this is a contender right now. Why deal away 100 RBI?
Ben: What is the situation on Tyler Johnson right now? Will be play a role in the bullpen in 09?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but Mozeliak can't count on him. That is why he needs to beef up the left side of the bullpen.
That's it for this week -- see you soon!
