| Tim: In my mind Furcal should be first priority for the Cards why arnt they interested? It makes so much sense to sign him, you get a leadoff hitter, good glove, great speed and a solid player. I hear hes only askin 4 years 10 mil. per why would you not take that we obviously dont likley have any SS prospects ready for the next few years so why not give hime a deal like this. I know eveyone is oushing for Renteria, I think that would be stupid hes on the decline and Older than Furcal. Plus he would likley get a 1 year deal so next year were in the same situation next year that we are in this year and that needing a SS. Why not mske s big signing now then we can use the money next year to worry about other priorities and not have to worry about SS. |
Jeff Gordon: Fair question, really. Furcal has a great arm and strong offensive tools. His body type suggests he could fade in the latter stages of the contract -- but Renteria would face that issue in 2009, should he sign here.
Pete Kozma is the best shortstop prospect in the Cards' organization and he is years away. So far, he hasn't demonstrated much offensive potential. Tyler Greene has made strides lately, but, too, is a marginal offensive prospect. And Brendan Ryan isn't viewed as the answer either.
Now that the Braves have given up on trading for Peavy, I like the trade option -- one of the outfielders for Escobar. |
|
| Tim: Would the Cards be interested in Randy Johnson? he would be a nice 1 year deal guy. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yes he would be -- and it appears that some pitchers -- perhaps the Big Unit, too -- will be disappointed in what sort of money is available this winter. Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe will cash in big because the Yankees want all three, but after the top five or six guys go, the money could shrink. Might this be a buyer's market? |
|
Ramero: Hi Gordo, good to know we share the same illness. Thank you for your time.
I will like to start talking about new QB, new HC, new owner and new city.
Please let me know your opinion one more time in a scale fromo 1 to 10. were 10 is the highest possibility to happen befor Agoust. To have:
1) New QB
2) New Head Coach
3) New Owner
4) New Home City for the Rams
5) New attitude |
Jeff Gordon: 1) New head coach.
2) New attitude
3) New QB
4) New Owner
5) New Home City for the Rams
The Rams aren't going anywhere any time soon. And Chip will be selective as he considers purchase offers. I believe he will try to pick somebody with strong Missouri ties IF and WHEN he decides to sell his share.
|
|
Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,
I am sure you are going to get this question from a lot of angry Rams fans, but I am going to ask it anyways.
What will it take to get Bulger benched?
21 of the 28 points the Niners hung on the Rams in that disasterous second quarter came off his fumble and 2 INTs.
He is missing open WRs, making bad decisions, and can't sense a pass rush if the defense sent him a memo ahead of time.
Green certainly hasn't done much better statastically, but at least the offense responds to him.
Thanks for letting us vent. |
| Jeff Gordon: So far, Haslett hasn't seen it that way. Green had his chance against the Jets and tnrew a red-zone pick. Bulger's second half success against the Frisco prevent defense justifies his next start. |
|
| Tim: Is Robinson Cano even on the trade Block? I know alot of people want the Cards to trade for him but I dont even know if hes even out there to be had. Id like to see Ankiel and some prospects for Cano and Hughes. |
| Jeff Gordon: All things are possible for the Yankees, with Steinbrenner going crazy in the marketplace. I like the idea of poaching one of their younger hurlers once Hank signs a bunch of free agents. I like the idea of dealing Ankiel for middle infield help. |
|
| Tim: your guess on future 3B Freese or Wallace? My vote goes to Wallace I mean the Dude has nothing but prove everybody wrong ever since he stepped food in the cardinal organization and with apparently 40+ HR potential and a bat like waht he has you cant go wrong. |
| Jeff Gordon: Wallace has massive offensive potential. I see him in the bigs next season, one way or another. He isn't a bad at 3B as scouts feared, but he could become a very interesting LF candidate if he can make the adjustment. That would leave Freese in line at 3B. |
|
Tim: With the depth of Ot in the draft this year and the need for protection on the Rams OL do you think its a lock the Rams go OT in the first round. As much as Id love to see Crabtree paired up with Avery I think its impeative to start rebuilding that OL. Im keeping my fingures crossed for Andre Smith. The Guys a beast and would be a HUGE upgrade. I think the line should look like this then
Pace Bell Incognito Grecco Smith Sexy? no but aggressive young and big guys that hopefully can get it done. I say wait it out with pace and See if he can just stay healthy for a year and keep Barron as a back up |
| Jeff Gordon: After watching Pace go down again Sunday, taking an OT makes more sense than ever. Then the team could re-sign Barron and either bring back Pace for one more year or turn him loose to spend money elsewhere. |
|
| Tim: Whats your opinion on ties in football? completely rediculous in my mind i wish they would change it |
| Jeff Gordon: It almost never happens, so I don't mind the rule as it stands. Exposing players to more than 15 minutes of OT in such a long season is dangerous. |
|
| Tim: How active do you think the Rams will be in free agency? There definitly going to have to offer alot of money to top players to get anybody to come to that mess but I was just curious. Do you think they would go strong after Cassel? |
Jeff Gordon: Matt wants Aaron Rodgers Money, and why not? He is one of the few young, ready-to-start veterans hitting the market after this season.
The Rams will be busy, yes, in free agency. They will cycle out numerous veterans. But St. Louis won't be high on a lot of players' lists unless this franchise gets new leadership and new credibility. |
|
Franklin: Oh Jeff,
What will it take for the Baby Billikens of SLU to reignite the fanbase? "Wins, wins, wins," I know. But those might not be coming in bunches, early in these youthful players' careers. Do you believe that Coach M should break with policy and allow the myriad freshmen to be interviewed and profiled? Do you believe he should open practices for fans and media, despite the obscenities you know about being tossed about? How does this team break through the clutter of Rams losses, Cards trade talk, Blues youth movement, etc.?
Seeking Bills knowledge,
Franklin! |
Jeff Gordon: Majerus is a great coach, but he hasn't done much for the PR side. I think it's silly to shield the freshmen from the media, since they are the focal point of the team.
SLU needs to engage the casual sports fan who hasn't been to the new arena yet. Look at how hard the Blues are working to rebuild their fan base in this tough economy.
Especially with the Billikens in Year 2 of 4- or 5-year process, the school needs to be reaching out more. |
|
| old cowboy: Gordo, Interesting comment by Martz saying he wasn't surprised by where the Rams are and their particulair state of disgrace. He alluded to lack of retention of players, your thoughts on this and does this fall squarely on the shoulders of Shaw and Zymunt? |
Jeff Gordon: And the coaches, like Martz, who made their own mistakes. There is shared blame here. Nothing was ever Mike's fault when he was here. His unwillingness to hold himself accountable after stepping all over personnel decisions is one reason why he departed prematurely.
Zygmunt made too many personnel calls, since he was the keeper of the cap. Linehan made mistakes, too, like wanting Drew Bennett and later casting Bruce aside.
The Rams have been as hurt by the players they allowed to leave (Fletcher, Bly, Pickett, Curtis, Warner, et al) as some of the slugs they drafted. |
|
John: Hi Jeff,
The games are too painful to watch; I have a good-looking Rams coat that's too embarrassing to wear; and the season tickets that we've owned since season one, game one, are too expensive not to use. Aaagh!
John |
| Jeff Gordon: I'll feel your pain. Feel free to see this week's tickets to a Bears fan, if you know one. |
|
TTT: Gordo,
Thanks for the chats.
If you magically remove the second quarters from the last 3 games, the Rams would have gone 2-1 and would have been outscored only 41-29. Not horrible at all, and that’s ¾ of the games. Your thoughts please: Why would a team fold in 2Q and be okay for the other three? RE the decent showing in the 2nd halves, do you think Haslett might be doing a pretty good job at half-time “rallying the troops” or did the other teams just let up once it was over? |
Jeff Gordon: Jim has been OK at halftime, but the team's habit of collapsing totally under duress is alarming. This speaks to the collective character (or lack thereof) of the group. The offense makes big mistakes and the defense just caves in.
NFL games always twist and turn. This team is so accustomed to losing that it just packs it up when trouble hits. This is why the team needs an extreme makeover, starting with the high-paid veterans. |
|
9elbirdos: Gordo,
I was willing to give Bulger some slack but his play on Sunday in the first half was beyond ridiculous. He had all kinds of time and threw into double coverage without even looking the field over. He had his mind set with the snap where he was going with the ball. The Rams have got to cut their losses this year with him. If he goes some where else and excells more power to him. I don;t know about drafting another QB or signing a free agent or let Trent try next year but something has to change. The expermint with Carriker in the middle is also a bust they need a real dt in the middle of that defensive line. I know you have said all these same things but I just had to vent. The linebackers are even more of a joke they are way to small and playing out of position. Also it looks like Pace could be done for his career with the Rams. Thanks again for letting me vent. |
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with any of those points. Bulger is making mistakes a highly paid former Pro Bowler cannot make. He is at the wheel of this football team and he keeps driving into trees.
The LB play was shockingly bad. This defensive collapse is killing Haslett's campaign to be remove the "interim" tag. |
|
9elbirdos: Gordo,
What is up with the Cardinal's waiting on signing a free agent 2basemen or ss? They should have had a player identified as to who they wanted right away. So that one of these two major needs should have been addressed already. |
Jeff Gordon: Any Type A free agent would cost the Cards a first-round compensatory pick if the signing happens this month. IF the Cards are going to a mid-priced, short-term option like Renteria, then waiting until next months makes sense. If Detroit decides not to offer Edgar arbitration (and they won't), then he would be available without costing the Cards the pick.
The only top second baseman, Orlando Hudson, doesn't seem worth the top dollar. Furcal would be worth it at SS, but he would cost the Cards long-term money and the puck.
John Mozeliak has lots of trade chips, so he could go that route to get the needed middle infield help after buying LH relief help. He has made offers to a couple of lefties already. |
|
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
What is your criteria for a qualified MLB MVP and do you think the sportswriters usually get it write in a close race?
Thank you! |
Jeff Gordon: I've been one to stress "most valuable" over "most outstanding" -- and Albert loses out in that criteria. But this year, Albert was demonstratively better than Ryan Howard as an overall player. And you could argue that few athletes in all of sports are more valuable to their franchise than Pujols, given his huge presence on the field and in the clubhouse.
To me, the tiebreaker is the fact that Albert has one MVP in his previous seven years and he has been the best player in baseball during that time. |
|
VonEpp: Please, somebody call Jack Youngblood (#85) and see if he is able to play. I'm a longtime Ram Fan and live to far to see what happens day to day at the Ram Camp. When I do see the Rams, it breaks my heart when they play so poorly that a High School team could whip on them.
What is going on? Where are they broken...is it the coaching? Team owners? poor pay? lack of talent? WHAT?!?!
These guys should tear a page out of old Jack's handbook and learn what it takes to play in the NFL. It's not the glitter that gets you to the covetted spot of #1, its HARD WORK!
Crap...its like watching that old TV show "Coach" that reminds me of the RAMS. What the Hell is wrong with this TEAM?
Doug
Maryland |
Jeff Gordon: To lose like this, everything must go wrong for a team. Management, coaching, veteran players, kids, fill-ins -- everybody fails when a team collapses like this game after game.
Extreme makeover! |
|
Ken: How do we or when will we really know that Shaw and Zygmut are really gone?
Who is most likely to be the next head coach?
Who is most likely to be the next GM?
I would ask you about the draft but to me it looks like we need help in almost every position.
When can we start releasing the veteran players? Personally I wouldn't keep anyone over 30 as it will be at least 2-3 years to rebuild this roster to the point of being competitive.
Your thoughts appreciated.
Ken |
Jeff Gordon: I would expect Shaw to retire to step into an advisory role at the end of the season, once the next president is chosen. When that person is hired, we'll know Zygmunt's fate. And that person will have to select the coach.
If Chip Rosenbloom doesn't install a strong presidential figure at season's end, then there will be no turnaround. Strong leadership must come from the top. Strong leadership will attract good coaches and capable free agents.
Guessing on potential coaches is tough, because we don't know who will be making that call. Dick Vermeil, Ron Wolf or Marty Schottenheimer could be good places to start in the president search. |
|
Josh: Some telling statistics for the Rams:
-Outside of Steven Jackson, we have 1 rushing TD and it was by a WR
-OJ Atogwe is tied for 4th on the team in scoring for non kickers
-We are averaging 14.4 points per game and only once have gone over 20 points
-Besides OJ Atogwe's 4 picks we only have 2 other INTs all season
-We have no one with over 5 sacks and only 3 sacks from non d-lineman
-We have scored in the first quarter in only 5 games and twice were only FGs
-We have been beaten in losses by an average margin of 24 points (or a little less than double the points we average per game)
-Not including the Patriot game, in all of our losses our opponent has gone over 30 points (that means 7 times our D has let up 30)
-We have averaged less than 6 points in the first half in our losses while averaging 22 points given up or during our losses on average we have started the 2nd half down 16 points
-During the last 3 games we have been outscored in the first half 99-10
I don't know what else to say really. It is apparent that the team has given up completely which is a shame. |
Jeff Gordon: All those facts are jarring. The failure is so complete. The only good thing about this team is its kicking game, Donnie Jones and Josh Brown. And even Brown has missed a couple of key kicks.
There IS talent on this team, which is makes this even more exasperating. |
|
Brian: Gordo,
This team is in some serious trouble. At this point what do you do? Every player on the team is horrible and heartless (except for a few). In your opinion how many years does it take to rebuild? At this point you would have to get rid of pretty much the whole team.
Does Bulger have any eligiblity left that he could go back to West Virginia for a year or two to develop his skills? |
Jeff Gordon: You always turn over about a third of the group through free agency, the draft, injuries and competition. There may be a higher turnover for obvious reasons. The key is the veteran leadership and the guys making big money.
Pace suffered another big injury, one that will sideline him for most of the remaining games. Turn the page on him? Little? Holt? Bulger? Tinoisamoa? Chavous?
Those will be large questions. |
|
Pat Ferguson: Albert...can you play quarterback?
Please???? |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, Bulger is at the other end of the mental toughness scale, isn't he? |
|
| Brian: That Blues game last night was dissapointing. They had Montreal where they wanted them, but than started playing like they were short handed. Why does that happen so often that teams with the lead won't cross the blue line? |
| Jeff Gordon: When you lose your No. 1 center -- and when you are already missing your best puck-rushing defenseman, you best puck-rushing wingers and one of your next-fastest offensive forwards, that will happen. |
|
Barf3: Jeff.
Good morning. I was at the game yesterday like many of us have been for years now when they play SF out here. It is stll quite amazing the following this team has still in California.
The overwhelming feeling most fans have right now, which was strongly echoed yesterday, is we are fed up to a point of see ya until this group of players are gone. It is the players who we hold responsible in regards to giving us a product week after week that is so non competitive when compared to all other games each week. No matter what thay say to the contrerary the fact is their actions state they just don't care and have no compassion for what they do. Many of us are tired of them putting on the jersey that so many of us fans truly have a passion for.
There is no Faulk, Warner, Timmerman, Proel, Wistrom, A. Williams, etc... on this team. Players with passion for what they do. Instead there is Bulger, Pace, Holt, Glover, Pisa, Chaveous, Brown, Little, etc... that we are tired beyond tired of and who need need to go before we as fans gain our passion back for this team. We are a proud group of fans who don't deserve the effort of these players. |
| Jeff Gordon: Yeah, those veteran really tanked. It's sad to see. The next president/GM/coaching team will have plenty to do. |
|
| bfulton: Unfortunately--or maybe fortunately--I missed the game. How did Goldberg do in relief of Pace? Any chance that he could be a starter on either left or right side if Pace gives it up at the end of this season? |
Jeff Gordon: Adam did OK, although the 49ers weren't playing all that aggressively in the second half as Goldberg filled in. He is NOT a candidate to replace O.P. next year. If that change is made, it would come in the draft or possibly free agency.
Lot of good OTs at the top of the draft. |
|
| Jayson: Hey Gordo. Thanks for chatting. There are reports that the Yankees have offered C.C. Sabathia $140 million for a six year contract. If this is true, and C.C. accepts the deal, what kind of impact do you think his salary will have on the game? Will this contract be the one that breaks the camel's back? Will this lead to an eventual showdown between the owners and the MLBPA over a salary cap? I don't see how small or mid-market teams can remain competitive in free agency if teams like the Yankees can overpay for a player like this. Thanks. |
Jeff Gordon: There are three markets, one for the big cities, one for upper-mid markets and one for the mid to small markets. His money impacts every high-end pitcher, but teams like St. Louis would never pay that much.
A cap would help baseball, but I don't see the rich teams going for that. The fact that Tampa Bay and Florida could take big runs on small budgets tells you that baseball will survive without one. |
|
| Richard Zinselmeier: Gordo: I'm typing this before the winner of the MVP is anounanced. In as much as this seems to be a very contriversial award, wouldn't it be logical to have aa tie as Hernandez and Stargell did some years ago. |
| Jeff Gordon: But it takes a miracle for a tie to occur in the voting. We knew it would be close, however. |
|
| Brian: In your opinion, what will the Cardinals have to spend to keep Albert after his option year in 2011? |
| Jeff Gordon: Four-year extension, $100 million. |
|
TUG MAGRAW: Hello Gordo,
I keep getting the impression listening to Mo that the Cards are going to do whatever it takes to improve the team as long as the price tag is right.
Re-signing LaRue doesn't excite me. Can the Cards get past being thrifty and actually improve the team? We were very lucky to win the world series a few years ago. That won't happen again. |
Jeff Gordon: Of course if could happen again. Tampa Bay spent a fraction of what the Cards did this season and got to the Series. The Cards will contend for years, based on their current talent base and organizational depth.
The key is to not overspend on a dubious commodity, thus hurting your team for years. The bigger key is to stay reasonably healthy, which didn't happen this year. |
|
TUG MAGRAW: Hey Gordo,
Just another thought: the Rams make me want to hurl. The players don't seem to be worried about the outcome or even letting an injury keep them out of action. They make a lot of money whether they play or not. If they don't care why should the fans? |
| Jeff Gordon: Good question. |
|
| Jim Turner: How high could MU finish in the Big 12 men's basketball race? Top 6? Top 4? |
| Jeff Gordon: Sixth or seventh in conference is possible, if the guards come along. |
|
| B-Ball Fan: PLEASE tell us the Cardinals really won't be bringing back "over the hill" Renteria back into the Redbird fold. I much prefer letting Tyler Greene show us he merited the high draft selection as a SS before we spend 7 Million plus for 2 years on Renteria. Spend that money on a quality second baseman such as Hudson. Miles can back up at both positions. Please, also tell me Lopez won't be back. Lack of defense kills him as a viable back-up. |
| Jeff Gordon: Greene is moving into potential utility role with a nice fall. He is finally making his move. But he is not ready to take over at short. Renteria could be a bridge player, if he gets in shape. I'll take his '08 bat over Cesar's '08 bat in a heartbeat. |
|
bart harrison: What is the plan for Kyle McClellan ? Last spring, Duncan strongly implied that with 4 pitches, he was destined to be a starter - has that plan changed ? Why spend money if he can fill that roll ?
In that regard - if he wants to be a starter and the team asks him to do something else - my question is how does that affect his attitude - how does one balance being a "team player" while pursuing personal goals....would he ask to be traded ? Would love your insight on this issue, not just McClellan, but players in general. |
Jeff Gordon: Kyle is a great kid. I think he could excel as a late reliever (ala Franklin) or as a starter. Duncan likes his starter potential because of the pitch selection. I'd move him to the rotation and let him beat out Pineiro -- while still adding somebody to replace Carpenter as needed.
This team is deep in RH relief with Kinney coming back. |
|
| B-Ball Fan: Has Jeff Weaver been discussed at all as an invitee to spring training to resurrect his career as a "starter in waiting" for the Cards when Carpenter can't go again next year ? |
| Jeff Gordon: That would have be Plan Z, after all options are exhausted. The market for free-agent pitching past the top 5 to 7 guys may not be all that costly. This could turn into a buyer's market for No. 4 or No. 5 guys as team cut their budgets. |
|
| gene maris: Why don't tne Cardinals resign Looper? With some relief help, he would have won 18-20 games. That would have made him one of the top pitchers in baseball. Which he already is. Thank tou |
| Jeff Gordon: He is a solid option. If the market plays out as some expect, the Cards could keep him at a solid price. |
|
Ramfrank: Hey Jeff --
THANKS for providing us an outlet!
Q: Has there been ANY word from Chip recently? He can't be happy with Haslett's recent job performance, can he? |
| Jeff Gordon: This is not what Chip was hoping for, no. Owning a team that caves in every game can't be fun. All of this reaffirms the need to find strong new leadership. |
|
| NV Cards Fan: I am sure you will get tons of questions on the usual topics about starting pitchers etc. but how about a status check on Aaron Miles? Are the powers that be working on a deal to bring him back? I wouldn't think other signings would have much to do with whether or not they re-sign him. Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: He's a great back-up, especially since he proved he can play shortstop. I can't imagine anybody making him a better offer. |
|
| Mike: Ok, I've seen all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the state of the Rams right now, and yeah they are in trouble, but we don't need to cut the entire team, raze the dome and start over from ground zero. It's going to take a lot to get back to the state at the early part of this decade, but in your opinion what are the critical things that have to be done to get back to respectability? |
| Jeff Gordon: Strong leadership at the top is where it all starts. It all starts from there. Just look at the Dolphins turnaround -- and Detroit's inability to turn around. |
|
mick333: Before seeing Bruce and Holt over the years...I NEVER recall seeing receivers go down on purpose after a catch over the middle without being touched. That was hard enough to live with even when they were winning.
Now it seems EVERY RB or WR(from "super star" to rookie) who makes ANY KIND of DECENT PLAY takes himself out for three or four plays afterwards.
Am I the only one who notices this or feels this way?
Jim Brown must be laughing at this tem harder than everyone else.
Your thought please.
Rams fan since '67. |
| Jeff Gordon: Brown didn't play a 16-game schedule, he didn't play on hard artificial turf and he walked away in his prime. He was a tough guy, for sure, but don't dismiss the top players in today's game. |
|
| mick7: Are you aware of anyone voting for Ryan Howard? If so, have you discussed with them their thoughts on why him and not Albert Pujols? |
| Jeff Gordon: Howard got tons of votes because he drove his team into the playoffs. Can't take that away from him. |
|
BHO: Gordo,
With the emergence of Brady Quin in Cleveland, Derek Anderson will likely become expendable. Do you believe he would be a good option for the Rams to trade for?? |
| Jeff Gordon: He's work a look, for sure. At the least the Rams must make Bulger compete for his job, as Warner had to compete. |
|
buddy1999: Mr Jeff,
Thanks for doing these, always fun.
I have a theory about Pujols, I came up with this the year he won the MVP and everyone was trying to talk Andrew Jones up as MVP. Every year Pujols puts up such great numbers, but every years another player goes above and beyond it is expected of them. So basically Pujols being such a great player, and his year in year out great numbers, hurt him in MVP races and such because he is supposed to do what he does every year.
Is that a sound theory, or am I just trying to justify Pujols not having at least two and most likely three MVPS by now?
Thanks |
| Jeff Gordon: There is no doubt that some experts take Albert for granted. He is so machine-like. That is why I liked his candidacy this year, when the true MVPs were mid- and late-season additions. |
|
Joe Clark: Gordo,
Thanks for taking my question. We have bought season tickets that last four years. Last year hurt. They told us to get those type "A" free agents we need a new Stadium and they got it. Ticket prices go up we pay it. Nine bucks for a large beer we pay it. I take my family to a game it will run about 200 to 250 bucks. They need to pick up the pace with the free agents we should have plenty of money to spend. Are we ever going to get a type "A" free agents or settle for the type "C-D". I'm sick of those open DA WALLET comments but dang open DA WALLET. Thanks, Joe |
Jeff Gordon: I hear you on the prices -- way too high in this economy. Fans cannot pay that freight. They just can't.
Who promised to sign "Type A" free agents? The Cards said they needed more revenue to afford the talent needed to keep contending. The Cardinals have re-signed and extended key players like Pujols, Carpenter, Edmonds, Wainwright, Mulder, Isringhausen, Molina, Lohse and so forth. They traded for Glaus under the condition he would exercise his eight-digit option.
As long as the Cards invest more than $100 million on the the '09 roster and spend it wisely, DeWitt Care will hold up its end of the deal. |
|
| ramsfan: Is the Rams home game going to be shown on local tv this Sunday? On a sidenote, have you noticed that the only time the Rams have won this year is when the Tigers have lost. |
| Jeff Gordon: Bears fans will keep the game on TV. |
|
| BillP: Hello Jeff, my mind is made up, the Rams just need to cut ties with baby Bulger and we need to make an effort and draft Matt Stafford with our first pick next year. The Rams desperately need to turn the page, and baby Bulger has suddenly entered the Linehan zone where he's doing nothing more than spinning his wheels, and his exodus is inevitable. Why prolong it? I believe it's a net cap hit of 5 mill if we cut him. If saving dollars is such a big deal then they ought to just release Trent Green as well. How much would that offset it?.........I'm not bashing Green, he's definitely the better quarterback, but it makes no sense for this team to have an expensive backup when it's not going anywhere. After seeing yesterdays performance in the 1rst half (didn't watch the 2nd), I'm convinced we need to draft a QB in the 1rst round and move forward immediately. What do you think? Thanks and have a good day! |
| Jeff Gordon: If Green can't play -- and apparently he can't, since he isn't getting a chance here -- then he, too, might go. If you keep Bulger for cap reasons, then definitely bring in real competition. |
|
| Griff21: now with the extended injuries to andy mac & oshie are we going to try to bring in a warm body or just try to plug in one of our guys from peoria? |
| Jeff Gordon: Since Shanahan is headed elsewhere and Parrish went to the Stars, there isn't sitting around out there. Perhaps the Blues could trade one of the veteran "D" for another forward. There isn't much in the way of impact forwards at Peoria this year. |
|
| Ryan: Is Albert going to win? |
| Jeff Gordon: The countdown is on . . . |
|
Charlie M.: Jeff,
In my opinion, there is only one stat that tells the Cardinals' season in a nutshell and that is blown saves. I think we need to either just give the job to Perez or go out and get a top closer in free agency and then improved the bullpen more. After that is done, we should set our sights on a quality starting pitcher. This fluff about a big bat in the outfield is nothing but Tony's perfect world scenario. What we have is fine. As for the middle infield, we've gone through 20 infielders in the past 9 years (I looked it up). Defense up the middle is what we need, not a shortstop who can hit homers. What's your take on the Cardinal's immediate needs? |
Jeff Gordon: You don't need an A-Rod at shortstop, but 24 RBI won't get it done either. Same at second base -- don't need Utley, but 80 RBI would be nice.
On the bullpen, the Cards might look at a Hoffman or Wood in the short term to help Perez, Motte, Kinney and Franklin. |
|
Rick Dillon: Gordo,
Thanks for your time.
Please tell me we've hit rock bottom and can't go any lower. We're being discussed as a team worse then the Lions! My question is; Do you think Marc Bulger will ever recover from this slump he's in?
Thanks for your time. |
| Jeff Gordon: Bulger could recover, but he may have to move on to do so -- like Kerry Collins did. |
|
| Griff21: how incredibly unlucky are the blues? not long into the season we've used 5 goalies, lost what potentially could have amounted to a top line( Karyia, Oshie & andy Mac).not to mention EJ for the season & all the other various injuries to date. where do we stand on man-games lost? every team has some issues but i gotta believe we are near the top in that category. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Blues are unbelievably unlikely. |
|
SoundwaveSTL: Jeff
I turned off the Rams game at half time 35-3, did I miss anything good worth talking about?.
Thanks as always
SoundwaveSTL |
| Jeff Gordon: Actually, Bulger threw the ball well in the short passing game. Craft ran some corner blitzes that worked. Avery had a great second half. So there were a few good notes. |
|
Loveless23: Hi Gordo.
I know it's only been 4 days of the free agency, but I just have this feeling that the Cardinals aren't going to do anything this off-season as like every year. Have you heard anything new about any players the Cardinals might get or who have been contacting?
Thanks for your time. |
Jeff Gordon: First of all, Albert is the MVP by a narrow margin. Details to follow.
The Cards have offered LH relievers deals and Mozeliak is actively seeking middle infield and starting pitching help. |
|
| Griff21: never seen him play, and only this year actually learned to pronounce his name correctly. I have heard good things about him and he seems pretty mature. could we see Lemtyugov get the call? he might not be ideal replacement but hes gotta be one of the most skilled guys in the farm. |
| Jeff Gordon: I'm intrigued by the guy, but he so far he looked ready for the rough and tumble in the NHL. The Blues need to look at him at some point this year or risk losing him back to a Russian team. |
|
| Joe: What is the chance that the Rams throw a boat load of money at Scott Pioloi(Spelling?) after the season to run our front office? 0%? |
| Jeff Gordon: It starts with ownership. If Chip decides to keep the team, he has to keep it for a while and install a great president. A lot of NFL personnel gu9ys would come here if the power and financial security was in place. |
|
| Griff21: About time Pujols got the MVP, finally the rest of baseball knows what the weve known for years |
| Jeff Gordon: Agreed. |
|
| Loveless23: Is there any chance we would be interested in Jhonny Peralta? |
| Jeff Gordon: Interesting bat, for sure. But what about the glove? |
|
mightymike105: Gordo,
A question was asked me the other day about the Rams mostly directed toward the D. The question was: Is it more that the players on D don't want to play or simply can't play? After thinking about it Jeff and some of the individuals, I honestly believe that too many of them simply can't get the job done. I do not think Glover or Adam C. are quitters but they get destroyed up the middle. Cory? Just can't seem to make plays. Real slow of foot to. Pisa? Poor coverage and tackle skills. Also too small. Fakir? Best days behind him. J. Wade? Lucky to be here. T. Hill? Too small. This is a league of big fast wide outs. Got beat a lot even when in position to make plays. Confidence shot. Never should have been drafted so high. The team constantly gets manhandled because of its size and in some cases just ran over. We have some speed but guys seem not to know or miss too many assignments. Haslett put these guys together. Overall Jeff we have more guys that can't get it done than we have people that can.
In closing Jeff we are this bad. If u take the end of last year and this year, the blow outs have been consistent almost every week. Yep Jeff we is who we is. Just a really bad defense. |
| Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that. It's shocking this defense can't stop anybody. |
|
Dan: Gordo,
Is Steven Jackson soft?
I watched the Dallas game, and saw Portis play with a bad knee. I wish the Rams had player like him. This is the first time in my life that I'm embarrassed to be a ram fan. |
| Jeff Gordon: Well, he's brittle. That's for sure. His injury history is what it is. |
|
| James Thomas: Shouldn't the Cardinals tear up Mr. Pujols' current contract, ask him how much longer he plans to play, then offer him that many years and leave the number line blank? |
| Jeff Gordon: Again, I think the extension should look like four years, $100 million. |
|
Griff21: yea I know we need more offense up the middle. but still a more pressing need is another starter. Carp is an unknown right now and until I see him on the mound throwing 7+ innings, we need more pitching. theres no way you can play the wait and see approach,if you dont have a healthy Carp, start looking for his replacement now.
weve gotten seriously lucky when we picked up Lohse and Wellemeyer when we did for practically nothing but we can't expect the "low hanging fruit" to be as sweet again this season |
| Jeff Gordon: The market may favor the acquisition of a veteran No. 4 or No. 5 starter as this unfolds. The top guys will all cost way too much with the Yankees driving that market. I think Mo will be able to protect himself. |
|
Charlie M.: Albert wins!!! Two wins or seconds in every year in the bigs. Is this HOF or what?
As for the Rams, just a few words....small, pitiful tackling, no desire, old, slow, no desire, no heart, throw downfield...take your pick. |
Jeff Gordon: Albert's success is unheard of. To be in the hunt every year is unreal, unprecedented.
On the Rams, you said it all. |
|
the gazelle: Hey Jeff,
Don't you think the main two characteristics in an MVP should be their team making the playoffs and power numbers? I mean well rounded players are nice, but if you can't homer your team to the playoffs, you shouldn't really deserve the trophy. |
| Jeff Gordon: I agree that contention is critical to the MVP, since it adds 'value" to the award. In any other year, it might have been tough for Albert to get a whiff as a fourth-place team player. |
|
brianstl: What is the big deal about Majerus letting the freshmean talk? I don't get why the media and others get worked up about it. It is simple, if the Billikens win they will draw and get all the attention they need.
Let's see how all the Blue's marketing helps them out if they continue to lose seven out of ten. |
| Jeff Gordon: SLU still has tickets to tell in an half the size of Scottrade. I'm just saying, there is work to do there. |
|
| Loveless23: What LH relievers, middle infield and starting pitching has Mozeliak contacted? I just want to get a good idea of what we might get. |
| Jeff Gordon: Talked to Edgar for sure. And Ohman's people. There is much feeling out going on. |
|
| rich: Jeff: Did you happen to see the Redskins OB take off and run up the middle in the 2nd qtr of last nights game? Not only did he gain 10 to 15 yards he was dragging the middle linebacker for 5 of em!!! Bulger are YOU watching????!!! |
| Jeff Gordon: Campbell is pretty mobile. Marc, not so much. I would be more concerned about his downfield passing than his wheels. |
|
the gazelle: Hey Jeff,
Any chance the Rams bring Mad Mike back to coach next year? He knows the offense and may be the only guy who can get Bulger back on track. Given the amount of talent on the offensive side, you would think Martz could work wonders.
If you're gonna keep Haslett, I think they should at least offer him an offensive coordinator position. |
| Jeff Gordon: Mad Mike could be on the move again, but it's OVER for him here. The few players left from his era could be headed out the door. Mad Mike needs to work for a good head coach with a lot of structure in place. |
|
| Joe: What percent of Mizzou fans are bandwagon fans? I ask because I have lived in St. Louis all my life and never until recently (Mizzou started winning)have seen so many Mizzou fans. The number sure seems to go down each week it seams too. Shouldn't a fan base stick with a team when they are horrible too? I guess I just don't remember all these hats and shirts being worn in the Brad Smith era. I find it funny also because they all act like they have been fans forever. But if that was true where were they the last 10-20 years. Kind of annoys me. |
| Jeff Gordon: Mizzou has bandwagon fans, yes. Look at all the empty seats at basketball games. Same deal. |
|
| razorback: Someone has to single out which rams that have quit and which ones that are not talented enough to play in the nfl. There is a big difference between the two. If you are not talented enough it is not your fault it is the front offices. |
| Jeff Gordon: Fair point. The next management team will have to sift through the wreckage to see which guys are worth keeping. Many of these guys are no where near as bad as they look. Maybe some of the vets who appear washed up would have something left for another team. |
|
| Griff21: correct me if im wrong... Type A, B ... etc. free agents that if we signed now we would lose a draft pick. but theres a deadline in december for their old teams to offer them arbitration ,if they fail to do that then the type A FA can be signed without losing a pick? |
| Jeff Gordon: Correct. That is why Renteria hasn't signed yet. Teams are waiting. |
|
| gregg: do the cardinals have any means of obtaining jake peavey looks like a pitcher worth a lot |
| Jeff Gordon: Atlanta had more to offer as far as young pitching and didn't get the deal done. That is the hold up. San Diego wants rotation-ready young pitching. If the Cards had that, they would plug them in. |
|
Nick Brunson: Jeff,
How do you feel about Felipe Lopez?
I like his bat and potential as a 2 hitter in front of our new MVP. I also think a full month of spring training with Oquendo could help him defensively.
What would it take to sign Lopez?
Nick B. |
| Jeff Gordon: Felipe wants multiple years. The Cards are worried about him tanking again, as he has done earlier in his career, if he got some security. |
|
| Josh: The worst part about the Rams is the leadership situation. I believe our captains right now are Bulger, Holt, Pace, and Witherspoon. Do any of them deserve the honor. I love Orlando Pace and Torry Holt, but they are both shells of their former selves and in all likelihood I see Holt ending up in Carolina this offseason. Bulger...do I even need to say it. Witherspoon has shown flashes, but is he really captain material at this point. I seriously think lack of strong leadership is a detriment to this team. What happens next year if we lose Bulger, Holt, and possibly Pace (cap casualty or even retirement). Do we promote OJ Atogwe who clearly deserves it? Do we just make OJ, Donnie Jones, and Josh Brown captains? |
| Jeff Gordon: Good point about the leadership. Who steps up? The current core folded. Is Chris Long ready to do more? Atogwe? |
|
Jimmy: Gordo,
What are the approaches of the Cardinals organization in recruiting international talents in this off-season and do you have any names of possible candidates? Thanks. |
| Jeff Gordon: The Cards hit Latin America hard and signed many good prospects. I'm not sure if they go as hard with the Far East prospects. It's hard to find value with that. |
|
| dingo: when will the big signings of sabathia or burnett happen?? Are the cardinals looking at peavy at all? what about another bat to help albert?? |
Jeff Gordon: If I'm Sabathia, I sign that $140 million before I step into a manhole. Burnett and Lowe should jump at Yankee dollars as well.
We've mentioned Peavy -- this team doesn't have enough young pitching to swing that. The team is looking at several middle infielders to upgrade the offense. |
|
| Pastaman372: Gordo: What is the talk going on about Randy Johnson? We dont need to waste millions on a washed up has been who is hurt alot. |
| Jeff Gordon: For a year . . . I dunno, could be fun, at the right dollars. |
|
| Josh: Any chance the Rams give a looksy at Chase Daniel in later rounds. He's the anti-Bulger: true leader, tough in the pocket, not afraid to take chances or make throws, doesn't throw off his back foot, doesn't have the "oh well" look when he makes a mistake. I know Daniel is small as can be and who knows if he can run an NFL offense, but Drew Brees turned out pretty well and let's be real, he can't be any worse than what we have. |
| Jeff Gordon: I love his character, but can he drop back and throw it as a starter? Gotta look at him. Too much heart and leadership there. Every team needs leaders like that. What a first-class kid. |
|
| Dominick: Why can't the Cardinals go out and get some good pitching to help Albert get back to the post season? Don't you think Randy johnson would be a good fit with the Cardinals? |
| Jeff Gordon: The Big Unit? Interesting. The team does need some pitching. |
|
| Jason C: What would you think about signing Penny to a 1 year incentive laden deal and Kerry Wood to a two-year deal? I've read that Wood wants to stay close to home and would rather pitch in the Nat'l League. Maybe he'd want to stick it to the Cubbies. Do you think we will be in on Orlando Hudson or will we need to fill the 2B hole in another fashion? Thank you. |
| Jeff Gordon: They will get a 2B one way or another. I like Hudson, but not for five years at $10 million. Penny might be an interesting guy, but he does have the shoulder issues. Gotta be careful. Wood is most intriguing. Nice bridge guy. What a competitor! |
|
| Josh: I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Rams are near the cap limit this year. I know the figure will move up, but what do you do about some of these huge contracts with have with mediocre players? A top 3 pick is going to command quite a bit of money and we have so much tied up in players like Pace, Bulger, Holt, Pisa, McMichael, Carriker, Hill....the list goes on and on. Do you consider cutting some of the "marquee" (recognition wise not performance wise) players on the team in order to free some money for the draft and free agency? |
| Jeff Gordon: There are a lot of old wood to get rid of. Some of it would have cap implications, some not so much. I bet the Rams can create room, since the cap will be going up. |
|
the gazelle: Hey Jeff,
For all the talk on Bulger or the defense, don't you think special teams play a role in the Rams losses this year? Brown has missed a few easy field goals, Jones has shanked several punts giving the other team good field position, and it's still been many years since we've returned a kick or punt for a TD. Maybe if our returner could take it to the house, it would give the team the spark needed to win some games. |
| Jeff Gordon: One more thing to fix. Brown has a few hiccups, but he is pretty good overall. Same with Jones. The return game needs help, as usual. |
|
RICO J SUAVE: Phat Gordo!
Do you think the Cards are seriously looking at any talent in Asia? I have yet to hear anything from the Cards organization about this. With the success La Russa had with Taguchi and a focus on baseball fundamentals that La Russa stresses I would think that an Asian player would make a splash here. Especially a middle-infield type slash hitter.
Rico J Suave |
| Jeff Gordon: As long as it doesn't cost a fortune, like the so-so Cubs right fielder. I'm intrigued by some of that polished pitching. |
|
| Josh: I remember when the Rams used to be on the winning end of these blowouts. It seems like ages ago at this point. *Pictures the many Warner to Faulk screens that went for 50 yard TDs* |
| Jeff Gordon: Hard to imagine that was in this lifetime . . . |
|
| Dominick: Mr, Gordon do you think Randy Johnson would be a good fit with the Cadinals? I don't understand why the Cardinals won't spend the money to get good pitching, do you? |
| Jeff Gordon: They spent money to keep Lohse, so that is a start. They took their shot with Mulder, so they are willing to roll the dice . . . to a point. |
|
| Dominick: Alright, Jeff, pick a winner. ALABAMA OR FLORIDA for the SEC title? |
| Jeff Gordon: Florida, but I loved Alabama against LSU. What a great game! |
|
| Josh: I just read on ESPN that the BoSox were considering a Julio Lugo for Nate Robertson AND Dontrelle Willis trade. If Lugo can get those two, shouldn't the Cards attempt to offer something. If this isn't "low hanging fruit" that has all the promise in the world with Duncan teaching them I don't know what is. |
| Jeff Gordon: Lugo would be a nice get, but the Cards aren't in position to deal pitching to get a shortstop. They need to do that with an outfielder instead. |
|
Ben: Gordo,
In regards to acquiring another big name starting pitcher, I am baffled every time I hear Mozeliak say that we need to wait to see how available Carpenter will be. Why is that? If Carp ends up being available, what would it hurt to have more than one dominate starter in the rotation? Isn’t that what builds a championship team? Let’s have 4 or 5 dominate arms!! If Carp isn’t available, then we would have that strong arm to fall back on. Please let me know where I’m going wrong here. Thanks! |
| Jeff Gordon: Agreed -- can't count on Carp, can't have enough pitching. Ever! Mo needs to just act on the market and not factor in Carpenter. |
|
Griff21: how about
Starter...paul byrd, always one of my favorites, Randy Johnson( love to have him) and what ever happened to john lieber?
Short... Adam Everett/ craig counsell platoon. since we are looking for low hanging fruit does Omar Vizquel have any value either?
LHP Glendon Rusch? |
Jeff Gordon: Liebs went to the Cubs and took a swing role last year, which surprised me. Byrd knows how to pitch, so he could be a good fit if he is still throwing well enough.
At short, the Cards can do better than that. |
|
| Griff21: When were the votes for MVP cast? |
| Jeff Gordon: Before the playoffs. |
|
| the gazelle: Don't you think this is the year Mizzou could break through and make a run in March? They've got a lot of young talent, and it looks like Anderson is finally making some headway with his players. Also, a lot of last year's problems are off the team now. I've even heard they are close to selling out their season tickets. |
Jeff Gordon: I like the depth up front, which is a change from last year. And Lyons and Carroll can do some damage against decent teams. But will the guards settle in? Will Matt hit the 3s? We'll see.
I see sixth or seventh, NIT possibly. There is a chance to break out if one of those kids take off in the backcourt.
The Prairie View game was interesting, although it's too early to take too much for that. |
|
Nitchke: Gordo:
First, you are the only sportswriter in this city that I respect when it comes to football. In a previous response today you acknowledged that "this team has some talent." My point here is that an overwhelming percentage of the fans and all of the other sportswriters in this city, have thrown up their hands and, I am paraphrasing, resort to the saying "I don't know where you begin." This type of kneejerk reaction shows such a lack of understanding of football and the dynamics of a successful football team. If we had absolutely no talent, please explain to me our defensive performances against Washington, against Dallas and against New England. I challenge anyone to go back to those games and tell that we didn't compete defensively on a high level. The idea of no defensive talent is bunk. These players simply do not believe. They are not motivated. They are not inspired. I believe, with a great deal of confidence, I know what I would do about it. But I want to hear from you first. So, I would love to hear from you whether you agree with my above conclusions and what you would do about it. |
| Jeff Gordon: It's easy to just say there is no talent. That is a cop out for the guys there and the coaches. They just have to be better. Losing Pace and Incognito were tough blows, but now the Rams need to see why they drafted Greco and Schuening. Next guy step up and play. |
|
| David: Any guesses on MU's potential draftees? Macklin, Coffman, Daniel, Moore, etc. Can the kicker, Wolfert, get drafted? He has ridiculous numbers in terms of accuracy, but does he have the leg? Can Macklin be a Tim Brown type or is he Desmond Howard? |
Jeff Gordon: Jeff will be in camp somewhere. I think. Great leg. Not sure about drafting. Maclin and Coffman will go late first, early second. Really like Maclin. Moore is well-liked, could be one of the first at his position to go.
So Pro Day at Mizzou would be interesting. |
|
Tackleberry: Please tell me that when the cards re-sign Renteria, that they don't try and pawn him off as the "impact" signing of the off-season?
I'm not even all that worried about just filling holes, but at one of the "need" positions (reliever, middle infield, SP) Mozeliak needs to land a legit player. |
| Jeff Gordon: Renteria would be an offensive upgrade, but not a home run get. I'd like to see talent added at second base, bullpen, rotation -- legit players, too. In some of those spots, you may go shorter term and look for a bargain. There are multiple needs, so Mo's direction will depend what other teams do. |
|
| Aaron: Why waste money on average left hand relivers. Who heard of any of these guys 3 years ago and their all 30 plus now. Go out and sign 5 to 6 minor league free agent left handed pitchers like Charlie Manning. Sign a starter or Kerry Wood or K-Rod and a nice middle infielder and have money left over to trade for another piece. We already missed on the best lefty anyways in Jeremy Affeldt on a 2 year deal. See why all the cardinal fans don't believe what management says. |
| Jeff Gordon: Agree on Wood. K-Rod, to me, is a bad bet. He wants too many years and dollars for a shoulder that might be wearing down. I agree that they need to get a real solution from the left side. Can't count on Tyler Johnson. |
|
| Joethedoctor: Now that Albert is getting so much recognition as one of the top 2 or 3 players in the league and possibly one of the top 10 or 20 all-time (if he continues on this pace), what will it cost to resign/extend him and should/would the Cards give him some kind of permanant contract? It really hurts to see guys send their best 12-15 years with their first team and then be bounded around the league the last 2-3 years. |
| Jeff Gordon: As I noted earlier, Pujols will need at least another @100 million to close out here. |
|
Kevin: Jeff,
We all know by now that the Cards are not going to trade or sign any star players any time soon. But when guys they targeted like Affeldt fall off the radar (signed with the Giants today) just how bad is it going to be for the Cards?
Thanks,
Kevin |
| Jeff Gordon: That was a big miss, since Mozeliak targeted him. And he made a quick signing a priority. It IS a bad note for Cards fans. |
|
Chris: Gordo,
Any chance the Blues make a move for help scoring? Do they offer Shanny more to make him rethink things? |
| Jeff Gordon: Shan the Man was supposed all but locked up for either Philly or New Jersey. But, yes, dealing a "D" for a forward might be necessary now. |
|
| adam: Jeff, thanks as always. Do we know where Ludwick rated in the MVP voting? He surely had to receive some serious consideration... |
| Jeff Gordon: If I read that right, he was 16th. |
|
| GEO123: What's your gut feeling on what the Cardinals will do this offseason? Who will they sign and or trade for? |
| Jeff Gordon: It's wide open, but guys are starting to come off the board. |
|
sltest: Is this the best jackman has played since his calder season? I dont recall him being as active in the offensive zone and his defense appears better this season.
Also, would you rate Polack the second best Blues D man currenlty, or where? |
| Jeff Gordon: Polak is doing great, maybe in the top three right now. Surprisingly good with the puck. And that has been Jackman's shortcoming. He's better this year, but he has had trouble with the puck. |
|
the gazelle: Thanks for taking all my questions. It's great to have a sports insider's viewpoint on things.
Isn't SLU loaded with junior and senior leadership this year? How is it that they didn't dominate a Division II opponent? Should Biondi be showing Majerus the door and making the way for a proven college coach like Quin Snyder? |
| Jeff Gordon: Rick is a proven coach and he has things headed the right way. But seven freshmen are tough to integrate. Beyond Tommie and Kevin, there isn't much experience on that group. When Kevin doesn't play, his absence is really felt. |
|
| sltest: Saw your comments on Albert being in the MYVP hunt all the time. If my memory is correct, Stan Musial was the same in his era. I think I saw a note from Bill James or someone that incdicated Musial had the most votes ever for MVP becasue he was always in the hunt, if he didnt win it he got second or third every year. Maybe the numbers are differnt now as their are more voters, but he may still ahve the lead. It may be worth looking into and making a comparions versus Pujols. |
Jeff Gordon: I believe Stan was in the Top Ten 14 times, which is astounding. Albert is one of the rare players capable of matching that. His work ethic and intensity is superhuman.
That's it for today -- thanks for all the questions and comments! |
