robott24: GORDO... I love your articles. Have you heard any scuttle about whether or not the Cardinals are interested in Brad Penny or Ben Sheets? I would think that both of these pitchers kind of fit the mold that the Cardinals (mainly LaRussa and Duncan) usually go for. I for one would love to see either of them in a Cardinal uniform because unfortunatley I don't have any faith in seeing Carpenter pitch this year.

Jeff Gordon: Sheets has huge injury risk and huge salary expectations. Penny could be a more interesting get, under the right circumstances.

CardsRedOctober09: I have read the Cards are likely to know more about Carp's progress in early December. What is happening in early December that will make it likely they will know more about his condition? If it is found out that it is likely that Carp will not be ready for Opening Day, will they sign another starter or is it more likely that Johnny Mo will make Tony give their prospects and younger pitchers like McClellan, Todd, or Mortensen (hopefully Todd) a shot?

Jeff Gordon: Look, if Carpenter pitches next year, it will be a bonus. That is the way to look at it. If the Cards don't see if that way, then that could cost them a chance to contend next year.

Jeff Gordon: I don't see Albert being the first $30 million guy, but he will get offered top dollar here. He's got three years to go here, so there is time to work on it.
