Michael Kent: Jeff ...

I have a bit of a concern about the future of the Cards' catcher situation. Of course, it has nothing to do with Yadier Molina's capabilities (i.e., Gold Glove-winning defense and a .300 hitter). Rather, I worry about how much more concussion-prone Yadi became after suffering one last season. Catchers clearly are at higher risk because of the home-plate collisions they leave themselves open do. Granted, baseball isn't football, where concussions are much more frequent, but once an athlete suffers a concussion, the concern about recurrence is heightened.

How concerned are Cards' management and team physicians about this? If this is a legitimate concern, then would it make any sense to consider Yadi as part of a trade package that would fetch a high-caliber middle-infielder, and then anoint Bryan Anderson as the Cards' everyday catcher this spring?

Right now, Anderson is widely regarded as more of a trade chip than as a future member of the 25-man roster. But if the Cards do deal Anderson, then is there any other catcher in their pipeline who could be Yadi-like? Surely, Jason LaRue is considered more of a backup than as an everyday catcher.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The concussion issue isn't something that would inspire the Cards to deal a Gold Glove catcher who has made tremendous strides as a hitter. The Cards like their situation at this position, with La Rue doing a solid job backing up and Anderson looming as a potential long-term replacement this season should Molina get hurt.

Might Anderson depart in a trade? Sure, it could happen in the right scenario. But Molina is a cornerstone for this team. Pitching and defense are critical to this team.

rjohn: Why isn't the number of Missou basketball great John Brown retired? He was at least as good as the players whose numbers are now hanging in the arena.
Jeff Gordon: Good question. That was before my time. Ditto Al Eberhard. Give the more modern players credit for elevating Mizzou's profile, winning conference titles and reaching the NCAA Tournament year after year.

Brett: Do you think sense the market for Adam Dunn is eerily quiet, that the Cards may pursue him? Obviously we need MI and LHRP first. Maybe a SP, although I hope we don't pursue an ace. Do you think Dunn is a realistic possibility?
Jeff Gordon: Given his salary demands, his one-dimensional game and the Cards' supply of better-rounded outfielders earning a fraction of his money . . . no, that doesn't make sense.

Brett: If Carpenter is healthy, will the Cardinals still go after a starter? We have Waino, Lohse and Wellemeyer as the base of the rotation and Pineiro is also in there. If Carp is unable or we dump Pineiro, will we go after a Lowe, Burnett, etc? Or will we likely go after a cheap option like Pavano, Hampton? Thanks in advance.
Jeff Gordon: Lowe and Burnett want many years and dollars. Mozeliak has been pretty upfront about his unwillingness to go there, given the big commitments the team has already made to Carpenter, Lohse and Wainwright. Rather than dump Pineiro (possibly eating some salary in the process), the Cards should let him compete with McClellan, Mortensen and veterans TBA for a rotation spot.

The Cards should assume that Carpenter will NOT be healthy and proceed accordingly. Build a five-man rotation without him and back up some depth as well.

kat89447: Gordo, I saw a little rumor on the web the other day about the Cards having an interest in Bobby Crosby of the A's. Have you heard anything about this. He seems like an ideal candidate for SS, kind of a Spezio player without the baggage.
Jeff Gordon: Crosby might be an interesting project. He hasn't hit for average, but, like Greene in San Diego, he offers more pop than the departed Izturis. If the Cards could swap a spare outfielder for him, that would make sense.

9elbirdos: Gordo,

I was looking at the Mizzou Tigers schedule for the next few years. They have all kinds of openings in their non-conference can we expect to see some better teams fill these openings.Like from the ACC,SEC,PAC10. I'm not talking the Florida's or Georgia's, More like the Kentucky's, Wake Forest, Syracuse or Stanford teams like these.
Jeff Gordon: Now that Mizzou has perennial bowl ambitions, don't expect Mike Alden to schedule ambitiously in the non-conference slate. The Big 12 is deep and getting deeper with A&M and Nebraska bouncing back, Snyder returning to K-State and Oklahoma State likely to stick around with Pickens bankrolling the Cowboys.

Given the difficulty of the conference schedule -- and the championship game hurdle that looms for the Big 12 North winner -- there is enough good football on the schedule. Mizzou got dissed last despite playing a much tougher schedule than KU, so where is the incentive to schedule up?

Also, the Tigers have some rebuilding to do post-Chase.

9elbirdos: Gordo,
Once again the Mizzou's Daniel CHOKES in a big game throwing bad interceptions. I don't know what this does for him about playing on Sunday's now. The defense couldn't step up so I don't want anybody complaining about what Bowl Mizzou goes to. All they had to do was win. They will get destroyed by who ever they play in the big 12 championship game.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, OU will kill the Tigers. That defense can't stop anybody. The Sooners will score at will.

Daniel wasn't his best in the big games, that's for sure. But his pro stock was never that great. There are at least five better NFL quarterback prospects in the Big 12 alone.

9elbirdos: Gordo,

Is there helping coming next year for the defense or do they replace the defensive cordinater. Right know it is just plain defensive to watch.
Jeff Gordon: Toledo had defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus on its list of potential head coaching candidates, so there could be a change there. Gary Pinkel needs to take a long look at his D.

That group gets to work against a great spread offense every day. Why can't it defend such defenses better?

DisCard: I am surprised the exit of Keith Mitchell from the Cards' organization received no coverage in the STL media. A couple of the system's hotter prospects credit him with having a major impact on improving their game.
Jeff Gordon: I hadn't seen that. Unfortunately, there is lots of turnover from year to year in the minor league coaching ranks. The Cards have really upgraded their farm system in recent years and the minor league managers, hitting instructors and pitching coaches deserve much credit.

Frank Wild: Jeff

With the election of the two slates of veterans coming up for the Baseball Hall of Fame who do you feel is worthy or has an honest chance to make it.I feel the pre 1950 era has been picked clean. It would be nice to get Vern Stephens in and have someone in the hall with a Browns' cap but I don't see his numbers based on todays standards being hall worthy. In terms of the modern slate I really would like to see Jim Kaat make it. Is there anyone with more gold gloves then him in the hall? I know there is a sentimental push for Santo as well. Who do you feel should make it and who would you put your money on?
Jeff Gordon: The candidates are Joe Torre, Ron Santo, Gil Hodges, Dick Allen, Jim Kaat, Luis Tiant, Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson and Maury Wills.

Torre makes it eventually, given his managerial numbers and very good playing numbers. The other guys I like are Kaat and Oliva. Everybody loves Santo, so, yes, he ought to get some support as well.

But I can't make an intelligent. (I know, I know, when has that stopped me before . . .)

Tim: If the Cards are really serious about Freese being the 3B of the future do you see them sticking Wallace at LF for a good part of the season to see if he could be the future left fielder?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards need a RH-hitting power hitter for the long haul, since Rasmus is another lefty. Wallace isn't a total butcher at third base, but Freese is the better prospect there as we speak. So, yes, Wallace ought to play some left field to see if there is any hope there.

Tim: The Trever Miller deal aint happening is it? Hopefully now they'll go after Ohman again
Jeff Gordon: The Cards made a big play for Rhodes, but let's see how it all plays out.

Tim: Last week when I heard the Giants (apparently)signed Renteria I wass happy because that ment the Cards wouldnt be getting him. I dont know what everyones obbsession is with him, hes on the decline in all areas, hes 33, and hed likley only get a 1 year deal with us and still 8 mill( which by the way is only 2 mill less then what Furcal is asking) just throwin that out there. I dont think people should want him because he used to be good. My opinion hes last resort behin Sign Furcal, Trade for Escobar, Sign Cabrera and even sign Hudson and have him play short. Would you agree?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will not sign Hudson to play short. There are still many options out there, mostly via the trade route.

Tim: Since the Wild are shopping Gaborik do you think the Blues might come calling? We have a mess of talented prospects so no problem working out a deal at least I would think so. And I think its about time to take the next step forward in the "rebuilding" process. The pieces are for the most part there with Oshie,Perron, Berglund, Johnson, Boyes, Polak, Petro, Mcdonald, Mabye Junland, Cole, Porter, Backes. Bishop looks like he could be the goalie of the future. Gaborik is still young, has already proved himself and has plenty of experience he would be a great centerpiece to put all those young guys around.
Jeff Gordon: Given Gaborik's inability to stay healthy and his apparently desire to play in LA after this season, I don't see the fit.

Monty: Gordo, any updates on Carp's situation? I still don't understand why the Cardinals haven't made a move to bring Looper back as insurance. Surely we're not going to be stupid enough to count on Carp even if he seems to be progressing well. How many times have we heard that line in the last 2 years only to have reality smack us in the face. It is a lot easier to trade excess starting pitching than it is to find it in a pinch.
Jeff Gordon: Today is the day the Cards must decide whether to offer Looper arbitration. They would be silly not to, just to protect themselves while exploring the market. If Braden opted to accept arbitration, then the Cards would have the stable fifth starter to protect themselves.

Why gamble on finding something as good or better for less money? At least the Cards know exactly what Looper offers.

As I noted earlier, the Cards should assume that Carpenter is NOT coming back and go from there.

Glenn M Turner: The Missouri loss was very discouraging. The defense is simply poor. However, the offenses in the Big 12 seem 2 steps ahead of the defenses. Oklahoma does have great talent on defense and look what Oklahoma St did to them. I think Missouri will lose both the offensive and defensive coordinators. Your thoughts on potential replacements?
Jeff Gordon: If they need a new D-coordinator, how about Croom? Not sure he would come here, but he would bring some attitude with him. If the Tigers need an O-coordinator, Pinkel ought to look out side and hire an up-and-coming QB coaches from one of the top spread offense schools. Some new blood could help the group, if vacancies occur.

Glenn M Turner: Looks like the rams will get a top 5 pick. Do we take a QB like Stafford or Bradford? I would prefer a huge OT. Rams have numerous needs so a trade down makes sense if the draft is deep. Is this team going to be sold?
Jeff Gordon: Will the team be sold? Maybe, but this could drag out for a couple of years to.

I'd draft one of the OTs first. With Bulger likely to return for another year, the Rams probably won't throw all their money into a young QB with the first pick. But I am getting a man crush on Bradford -- what an impressive young QB.

Tim: I heard something that the Cards were talking to the Giants about a Potential Cain Ludwick/Ankiel Deal. Any truth or is it just all talk?
Jeff Gordon: Trading an OF for a good SP? St. Louis would do that in a heartbeat, no? The price for Cain could be quite a bit higher than one OF.

Tim: So, basically Colby is the Center fielder or at least has first crack at the spot next year?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see if the Cards trade one of their starting OFs. If they don't, then Colby has little chance of making the team out of spring training. But we'll see him at some point in '09, unless he gets hurt again.

redbirdswin: Once Renteria is denied arbitration from Detroit, how long will the Cards wait to make a decision on whether or not to offer him a contract? Is the club still waiting to see if one of Atlanta's MI players will become available, or will they wait to see what kind of offers Renteria gets from others before making a move?
Jeff Gordon: If San Francisco is serious about giving $18 million for two years, I'd be shocked if the Cards tried to top that. Renteria played like a 40-year in the field last season.

joeswimmer: Gordo,

When we drafted Avery I was one that thought it was a huge stretch to take such a raw talent, from a team with no play book and plop him in a precision NFL offense.

For a brief period it appeared that I was wrong as he had some success but overall it appears he is a one-trick pony who can go deep but is unable to run effective NFL routes.

It is clear from Bulgers body language that he has no faith in throwing to Avery due to blown or poor routes. If you doubt Avery's futility ask yourself why when Marc throws the ball to Dane Looker it looks like the ball was guided in by laser but when he throws Donnies way we are lucky if the ball is within 5 yards of the target.

Marc has his problems, but young receivers running bad routes are making him look worse.
Jeff Gordon: That is true to a degree, but the Dolphins had great respect for Avery, They blanketed him and picked up two pass interference penalties covering him on the same drive. He is becoming a nice threat.

As for Bulger, there is no excuse for posting a 22.2 passer rating in a sack-free game.

Tackleberry: I am not an anti-Haslett guy, but with each passing game the fear grows greater that, if he is retained, so to may be the losing attitude. Again, Rams Park is a total chicken-and-egg scenario, is the coaching bad or is there really just a supreme lack of talent?

Being that Rosenbloom will want to maximize the value of his asset before he sells it, why would he hesitate to conduct an all-out coaching search? If he did so under the watchful eye of Devaney and a new president, he may be able to turn this franchise around.

The conservative "you know what you have" play is to keep Haslett, but it also may be the most risky if this team doesn't answer the bell for a 3rd straight season.

As a fan I'd like to see a new coach come in and clean house. It just feels like this team/roster needs a fresh set of eyes and opinions. Remember, as of last week, Bulger is the starter on this team through 2010 per Haslett.
Jeff Gordon: First things first. Chip has to find a strong president to run the franchise IN ST. LOUIS on a daily basis. That man must have a strong football background. If that man believes he can change the atmosphere with Haslett as coach, fine, but the mounting loss total suggests that is impossible.

There is more talent here than would guess. That is why this failure is so galling.

Tim: In the Draft this year it Looks like we Likley have 3rd pick. What would be your best guess for that pick. Id love it to be Crabtree or Maualuga but Unfortinutly we have a mess of problems and need to start with the lines. Im thinking Andre Smith
Jeff Gordon: Could be. OT, OT, OT . . .

Tim: Theres been alot of talk on radio shows that I have listned to on who would be on the thin list of keepers on this Rams team . So I figured Id ask you
Jeff Gordon: Avery, Burton, Stanley, Barron (one more year), Incognito, Bartell, Atogwe, Witherspoon, Long, Carriker, Ryan, Adeyanju, Brown, Jones, Bell (contract makes it mandatory), maybe Pace for one more year.

Jeepster: Jeff: What's holding up the Trver Miller signing? We wre essentially told it was a done deal two weeks ago and then later told there was some "minor language issues" that needed to be worked out.
Jeff Gordon: No idea what the agent's deal is. The Cards are easy to work with, so I assume that is the issue.

Tim: So for the Most part the Rams played some solid football yesterday compared to what they have been playing. Who really stood out to you on their play? Who might of redeemed themself a little? Who might of made a name for themself for the future?
Jeff Gordon: Romberg played especially well after finally getting a start. The whole O-line was solid for a change. Greco did OK filling in for Richie and Vobora showed a little promise at MLB, although he made some big mistakes. Atogwe still takes bad tackling angles at times, but he is a rare playmaker on the D side. Josh Brown had a redemption day.

oconnebl: Jeff,

Based on your arguments vs. the BCS system, why don't you rail on the Big-12 for the North vs. South football format? If the two division set-up didn't exist, the two best teams (Texas and Oklahoma) would be playing in Arrowhead this weekend and the winner would earn the right to play for the national championship.

Missouri clearly does not belong in the championship game, at best they are the fifth best team in the league .....the BCS system isn't the problem it starts with the conferences.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the same can happen in the SEC in a given year. And it has. It is quite possible that the best team in a conference won't even get to play in the conference title game. I'm not a fan of the conference title games because they are a major impediment to get getting a playoff system. Leagues that have title games put their top teams at a disadvantage, in many cases, to the power teams in the Big Ten and Pac-10.

redbirdswin: Gordo,

With the surplus of closers available (either through FA or trade), do you think Mo will wait to see how the market pans out and then make a move for a closer at a lesser price late in the offseason?
Jeff Gordon: The whole idea of ignoring the market and bringing back Izzy as the Chris Perez Insurance disturbs me. Would the team really do that as opposed to going hard after Fuentes or Wood?

Mo has the money and trade chips to really upgrade this team. To me, retaining Izzy would be a step back. I'd see the team keep Springer and look out side for a veteran closer.

Jeepster: Jeff: Shouldn't the Cards know by now the status of Chris Carpenter? They were supposed to have an answer by "late November".
Jeff Gordon: Here is what we know about Carpenter: He is recovering from multiple injuries and the Cards can only guess whether he will pitch well and pitch often in 2009. Period. Anything else is a guess.

Cards management would hate to guess wrong on Carpenter, again, after guessing wrong on Mulder and Clement last year.

marpdagn: Hey, Gordo. If the long rumored deal of Ludwick for Escobar goes down, what will the Cards do to replace Luddy's right handed bat in the lineup?
Jeff Gordon: IF that happened, then the Brett Wallace-to-left field thing could gain traction. Wallace could hit his way to the bigs at some point next year. He is the internal candidate. Could Mather get a shot? Maybe, but La Russa would want to add a RH-hitting veteran just in case.

Petey123: Jeff, why should Rams fans continue to support this team when their future in the city is in doubt? With the lease situation just around the corner the Rams could just pack up and leave.

I know not going to the games will be more incentive for the Rams to leave, but ownership could give some kind of guarantee to fans that they are sticking around for the long haul. The disconnect with the Rams and its fans is at an all time high and ownership is to blame for this.
Jeff Gordon: You have a point, but, in reality, the owner holds all the cards. If the next owner sees pitiful attendance totals and stadium that is becoming obsolete, the next owner can shop the Rams around.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Do you expect much to stir in the free agent market this week or do you think things are going to be dead until the meetings start next Monday?
Jeff Gordon: Once teams offer or decline arbitration by tonight, then the real fun starts. Some players who were Type A free agents may not be Type As tomorrow. Let's see what the FA list looks like Tuesday.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

What do you think the general range is (dollars and years) on the deals offered to Miller and Rhodes? Do you see both of these guys signing with the same team, or are there not enough "specialist" innings for both of them?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, there is plenty of work for them both. The D-Rays declined a $2 million option on Miller and the Cards offered him a two-year contact, likely for similar money. Rhodes wouldn't break the bank either.

karmon: I am curious as to what Mizzo will have in the way of depth next yr. Who is the heir apprarent at QB, and I am guessing Mclain will be gone as well as Weatherspoon along with Coffman. A lot to replace and with our lack of defense I see a real problem on the horizon unless our depth is better than I know about. I am from outside the area where I can get inside information so that is why I posted this for you. Thanks for what you do for all of us that follow the Tigers and more importantly the Cardinals.
Jeff Gordon: Blaine Gabbert will likely take over at QB. He was a blue-chip recruit he begged out of his oral commitment to Nebraska to sign with the Tigers. He has a cannon arm. At TE, we've already seen freshman Andrew Jones replace Coffman. And if Maclin leaves, the Tigers will have lots of potential replacements -- but none with that sort of game-breaking skill.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I understand the risk associated with Ben Sheets, especially considering Carpenter and Mulder. But if he could be had for $25 million over 2 years or $36 million over 3, wouldn't he be worth the risk? He'd be pitching for a pitching friendly manager and pitching coach (they won't ride him for 8-9 innings when they don't have to), he could still go out and get another big deal in 2-3 years after re-establishing value, and he could slide in as a #2-3 starter in STL...versus being "THE GUY" in Milwaukee, Texas, etc.

I consider paying Ben Sheets $12-15 million a year to sit on the DL much less of a risk than depleting our system to get a guy like Peavy, who will eventually sit on the DL (and cost more over 5 years). No, Rasmus hasn't proven anything yet, but guys like Perez and McClellan have, and they would certainly be involved in a deal like that.

Considering the alternatives, STL seems like a place that Ben can slip in, pitch well for a couple years and leave for a bigger deal. Chance to win in 2009 and 2010, great fans and a great manager/pitching coach.
Jeff Gordon: Pitching injuries happen. It's part of the game. But paying big money to an injury-plagued hurler is just asking for trouble. If the Cards put half their '09 free-agent budget into one guy and that one guy got hurt again . . . well, that could doom the season.

Jeepster: Jeff: If Chris Carpenter is deemed unhealthy (and we all expect he will be), is there any chance the Cardinals do the smart thing and pursue Jake Peavy?
Jeff Gordon: Even if the Cards wanted to deal for Peavy, I'm not sure they have the MLB-ready young pitching that San Diego keeps asking for.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Beyond the normal free agent speak, we have another guy who's contract is up after 2009...TLR. Do you see him re-upping, or is this his last hoorah? I truly believe how we handle Don Tony and his eventual replacement will be a determining factor in Albert's decision to extend or test the market after 2011...
Jeff Gordon: IF the Cards make the right moves and get back into contention next season, the TLR is likely to finish his career here. This winter will be the test for his relationship with DeWitt and Mozeliak. If the team reloads, Tony will be happy. If they pass on real opportunities to imprve, then Tony could get frustrated the way Whitey got frustrated.

As for Albert, 2011 is a ways off. A lot can happen the next two years to set that stage.

joie: Mr Gordon

Oliver Perez Oliver Perez Oliver Perez please pass this on to Mo thank you
Jeff Gordon: Let's see what the dollars look like. If fewer teams are buying this winter because of the economy, "Mo" might get into more FA discussions than he imagined.

Glenn M Turner: The Cardinals can resign Lopez for 2b for about how $/yrs? If yes, is a trade for Escobar from Atlanta possible assuming ATL can not trade for Peavy. What do we have to give up to get him? He seems like a Renteria type player to me is that fair?
Jeff Gordon: Escobar is like Renteria, but he plays about 10 years younger. I like Lopez, but I wouldn't give him multiple years. He has been too erratic for that. Make him earn his money.

RJ: Gordo:
I know you didn't write the article, but I think it is pre-mature to put Albert's face on the Cardinal Mount Rushmore. Suppose he goes to the Yankees after he plays out his time here. I think it should be limited to guys who are no longer playing. AND, for those of us who are baseball fans and not that interested in the Losers down at the dome, couldn't there be some additional bseball articles written - there's got to be something to write about...
Jeff Gordon: Starting Tuesday, you'll see free agency really heat up. As for Albert, what he has already done makes him one of the franchise greats, period.

BrotherBri: Thanks for the patience you show in dealing with Rams Angst. We really do appreciate you.

In my mind, I can see the Rams returning to respectability. As we all know, the primary steps are new owner, new president, new GM (though Devanney is probably OK), and then, finally, new coaching staff, top to bottom. But if we assume the economy scares off buyers and Chip stays, and that leads to Devanney being GM and de facto president, and Haslett gets his second chance due to better play down the stretch, how do we improve?

1. Day after season, bid a fond adieu to Messrs. Glover, Chavous, Tinoisamoa, F. Brown, Bennett, Klopfenstein, Leonard, and, if it doesn't push the total cap hit to deadly levels, Green. Thanks for the memories, guys, and Corey, if you want to help Devanney with the draft, we'd be delighted. (BTW, How bad is the cap hit if all of those go?)

2. The next day, the Rams talk to Little about a more cap friendly contract, using some extra (non-guaranteed, of course) years to help sweeten the deal. Once Little is back, try to ease Pace's cap number. With cap improved, get Otogwe and Bartell signed.

3. On March 1, the Teen Squad moves into Al Saunders' home. Each morning includes Route Running 102 and Formation Shifts 201. Each afternoon includes Audibles 102 and Jam Escapes 101 (against live opposition). Each evening includes Beginning Route Adjustments -- QB Bailouts. In March, Avery learns WR 1, Burton WR 2 and Stanley WR 3. In April, Burton 1, Stanley 2 and Avery 3. In May, Stanley 1, Avery 2 and Burton 3. Then in camp, Saunders can assign based on which combo works best for the team.

4. On March 2, King, Wade and Tye Hill move into Rick Venturi's home. Each morning includes Run Support 101, Tackling 102 and Zone Coverage 101. The afternoons focus on jamming receivers, including live practice against the Teen Squad at Saunders' home. Evenings include Intermediate Backpedaling.

5. On the first day of free agency, the Rams sign Jordan Gross to be our RT for the next five years.

6. Talks begin immediately to trade our #2 pick, plus Holt and Barron, to a team with a first-rounder in the low 20s.

7. Oher or Smith in Round 1. Alex Mack with the pick in the 20s. The best SS, LB or DT available in Rounds 3 & 4. Developmental QB in 5. FB in 6. TE in 7. And scarf up defenders/special teamers among the street free agents.

It would leave our LB corps weak, but with O-line improved and WRs coached up, offense would be much better, leading to longer drives and less wear on the smallish D-line (hopefully, Long and Carriker can bulk up some, as well). Improved secondary play and fresher D-line would improve the D immeasurably.

Certainly not enough to get us Super Bowl-ready, but enough to return us to respectability -- and in this division, that could mean playoffs!
Jeff Gordon: That was an inspired effort, easily the post of the day! Sounds like a plan to me.

The GOAT: GORDO,
How bout those Flyers? Nice for those kids to win a championship.
Did Moore injure his finger this weekend pointing and telling his guys who to cover? Matt and Cornell, look for new gigs.
Mizzou's offense looks like a circus sideshow. High powered, you want high powered let's take a look at Oklahoma.
The game is going to be a blowout . . .
Thanks for taking my call.
Jeff Gordon: Some of your skepticism is shared here and with my fellow P-D pundits. Pinkel has a weird way of celebrating his contract extensions and raises, eh?

To be a real top 10 team, Mizzou will have to build a sturdy defense and add a power component to the offense. But this sure beats talking about the bad old days.

BrotherBri: Blues: Please tell me that the Stempniak trade was laying the groundwork for the long overdue McKee/Porter for Afinogenov trade. I wouldn't be surprised if both ex-Leafs improve for us the way Boyes did (if to a lesser degree), but there are clearly too many D-men and not enough scorers.

Cards: Any news on the lefty relievers? Any shot at all on Fuentes?

And as for our middle IF, any chance of packaging Anderson, T. Greene, Todd and Franklin to the Tigers for Polanco? They get their solution at C, and some bullpen help, as well as getting younger and cheaper. We get Pujols' best friend, hustle, leadership and one hole filled. And we still have McLellan, Pineiro, Thompson, Ludwick and Kennedy available for Peavey and K. Greene.
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy and Thompson have trade value. Pineiro, and his contract, also ofer no value. McClellan is a guy other teams would want, but he is just the starting point.

Tyler Greene has no real trade value and I'm skeptical that Franklin and Todd would fetch Polanco.

The Cards have two offers out (one of them almost signed) for lefty relievers. It will be interesting to see where Fuentes' price settles, since fewer teams seem inclined to make big-money offers at FA pitchers this year.

As for the Leafs deal, I'm not a fan. McKee for Afinogenov would be a salary swap that helps both teams.I'd take Junland in the NHL over Carlo at this point, although the new guy has played pretty well so far.

After seeing this team struggle to develop scorers for years and years, I hated to see Stempniak depart. He was a real solid person, too, from all all accounts.

Justin: Gordo, put a percentage on the Blues' chances of signing Andy McDonald long-term at the end of the season.
Jeff Gordon: Given all the cap limitations around the NHL, I'd think the Blues would have a 80 percent chance of keeping him.

Larry L: Gordo
What is the status of the cards signing of Miller. Seems like this topic has disappeared even thou some web sites say we signed him on the 20th.
Keep up the good work
Jeff Gordon: Still no update. Can't explain the holdout. The Cards and the agent appeared to agree to terms, but we'll know sooner or later what is going on.

Ray: Hello, these are both a questions and comment. What do you think of Rafael Furcal? seems like if we could get him (regardless of price) he would fill three needs for us (Lead-off/SS/Base stealing)and could be around for a while. So why do you think we are not after him? or are we the mystery team I keep hearing about?
Jeff Gordon: I doubt it. The bidding on Furcal is going pretty high. The Cards could go there, but that would eat up a huge chunk of their offseason budget. I'd love to see the guy here, given his all-around offensive ability and his big arm.

Here is how Mozeliak could justify the deal: Assume that Glaus and his contract exit after this year and pencil in Freese at 3B next season, playing for little. Furcal's deal could then fit the budget more easily. The Cards don't have a sure-fire SS prospect any where near the bigs, so this will be a huge off-season at that position.

Jeepster: Jeff: Yea, I realize I'm nuts but is there any sane reason the Cardinals are not heavily involved in the talks for Jake Peavy? On the planet I come from if one of the top major league players wants to play for my team, I go out of my way to get a deal done for him.

...and please stop telling us about the front office relying on Carpenter coming back. He's not going to be the same pitcher. See Mulder and Clement of last year. It's time to move on.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards don't have the MLB-ready pitchers to send back to make such a deal work. If Mo was willing to part with Wainwright, then Jake is here. But behind Adam the falloff of pretty great. Pitching kept the Braves from making the deal so far because Atlanta wouldn't part with certain players. And the Cubs don't have the type of guys, yet, that San Diego wants.

rich: Jeff: Did I really hear Haslett say that the 3 int. were no big deal? I was rooting for him to come back next yr. as the HC but now it looks like he;s fooling himself and living in a fantasy world like Martz and Linehan before him, if he really beleives those 3 int. were no big deal....HA!

Rich
Jeff Gordon: He said that in the context that the INTs didn't directly lead to much in the way of Miami points. But, yes, turnovers are costly. And he knows that.

Petey123: Jeff, does Chip realize the amount of apathy people feel about the Rams right now? Their is absolutely no connection with the community and the Rams.

Also, would Chip consider lowering season ticket prices after fans have had to tolerate this garbage for two years? This organization really doesn't get it and things need to change immediately.
Jeff Gordon: He will try to improve the team instead. He will discount tickets only if there is no other way to get people into the building.

Melvin Delaney: Gordo

From previous chats, I can see you are in Mo's corner. As a Cardinal fan for over 40 years, I must respectfully disagree. I still believe he let last season die on the vine by not getting some bullpen help at the trading deadline. Instead, the Cardinals had to rush Parisi and their top left handed minor league prospect ahead of schedule and both ended up with significant arm problems as a result. It is hard to believe the he could not have picked up someone like Aurthur Rhodes, as it appeard that Florida got him pretty Cheap. He was able to sign Loshe only because he wanted to stay in St. Louis. The Rolen for Glaus deal was a good one, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while.
Jeff Gordon: Garcia had trouble before he came up and tried to pitch through it. Perhaps his call-up exacerbated this issue, but he was headed to surgery one way or another. Parisi was just a fill-in. How did his recall cause his injury?

Perez and Motte upgraded the bullpen in the late going, as did Kinney. Would Rhodes have dramatically changed the outcome of the season? Unlikely.

Mo added Lopez, who hit .385 down the stretch.

Encino: Daniel Fells looked impressive at tight end. Does he have a future with the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: More than Klopfenstein, yes. The coaching staff likes him.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Grady Sizemore NEVER had a year in the minors like Rasmus did in 2007. Injuries derailed him in 2008, but he still showed speed and pop. People continue to ride Mo and Luhnow for their Colby love. The way I see it, the Padres front office sees him as a sure thing if they are considering him as a centerpiece for Peavy. Colby would have fetched Sabathia, Holliday, Uggla, etc., so obviously the front offices in CLE, COL and FLA like him too.

What is your stance? What is a reasonable return for a guy that could contibute in 5 different areas 150-160 games a season? Even if we could get Peavy, and he won 18-20 games in STL next year, which is 8-10 more wins than an average MLB starter, don't you think Rasmus can contibute more than 8-10 wins in '09?
Jeff Gordon: I'm not Colby could have fetched all those players, but, yes, other teams like him a lot. But the Padres are way more interested in MLB-caliber young pitching.

I'm a big fan of Rasmus and I do expect him to be a very good pro for a long, long time. if he and Todd and another guy would fetch Peavy, though, I would make that deal for the reason you cite.

John West: Do we not have a decent package to offer the Padres for Peavy and Greene? I would think we have a better system right now than the Cubs do and Pevay and Greene could solidify our position in the NL Central. Do you think we will reconsider making them an offer? After all Mo wanted to address SS and Pitching via trades if possible. Who would it take?
Jeff Gordon: Again, the key is the pitching the Padres would get back. Is there enough in the Cards system past Wainwright? Maybe not.

The Burning Bush: The preseason Hiesman hype for Chase Daniel is laughable now. Do you agree that Daniel has sealed his fate in Mizzou history as an overrated QB?
Jeff Gordon: Not at all. Look at his career numbers and the won-loss record. Hard to top that. But the Heisman hype does look silly, since he might be the sixth-best QB in the Big 12 this year. It was that kind of season.

B-Ball Fan: So who will the Rams take with the # 2 pick in the draft ? It had better start with the best player available irregardless of position because the Rams need good players at every position other than our kickers. Thank you KC for winning yesterday.
Jeff Gordon: Fortunately, there are lots of top OTs available at the top of the draft.

AlwaysAFan: I grew up watching the "greatest show on turf" and have been a fan ever since. I am not used to seeing bad quarterback play week in and week out. How long are we fans going to have to suffer until we can get a good quarterback back in St. Louis? Bulger's play these past two years has been awful and I have tried to remain loyal but I too have been swept away in the flow of anti-Bulger sentiment. I want Kurt Warner back NOW!!!
Jeff Gordon: You're not Warner back, but there is no reason not to bring in another starter-caliber guy to compete next year.

David: Since the Rams' owners are really in sell mode, they won't hire a high-dollar coach for next season. But what are the odds of 1) A bought-out Charlie Weis as head coach or O-coordinator 2) Romeo Crennel as D-coordinator or 3) Coach Has-been stays, as does Saunders and we pick third again in 2010?
Jeff Gordon: What has Weis done as a head coach that makes you believe he can turn this around? Again, I'd rather go with a guy like Rex Ryan who is hungry for a chance.

FiberOne: It appears to me that Mizzou will be mediocre at best the next two seasons with what appears to be superior teams developing at Kansas and Nebraska. Do you have any reason to be optimistic for Mizzou in the near future considering the seniors, and possible underclassmen, that will be lost?
Jeff Gordon: The Tigers have recruited very, very well. As long as Gabbert can run this offense, the Tigers won't fade to oblivion. Pinkel, unlike Larry Smith, has stacked up some good classes.

David: Can we put Gus Frerotte on the list of former Rams who have done well elsewhere? Gus couldn't throw a three yard TD pass in a backup role for the Rams, but he looked capable last night w/the Vikings.

I asked a version of this question last week -- Jeff, how can all the War Rooms have players such as Jimmy Kennedy, Ty Hill and Adam Carriker so highly reated? When evaluating the Rams' drafting, it's not as though they took these guys so far out of line from where all the experts thought they should go - they were picked within their projected range - yet the Rams get little to nothing out of them. How do the evaluators manage to miss so badly?
Jeff Gordon: Some of these same guys had Madison Hedgecock rated high and went on to win a ring with the Giants. Kennedy was trouble when he was drafted - everybody knew that -- but guys like Hill and Carriker might be fine in other settings, after getting mentally and physically healthy.

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;

Cards question; If Furcal, Cabrera and Renteria sign elsewhere and the Braves decide to keep their middle infield "duo" together, where do the Cards go shopping to UPGRADE their middle? What do you think of Grudzielanek? I don't know if that would be a good move because he has missed a lot of games with KC due to injury. Is there a guy out there you like other than what has been talked about?

Thanks Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: I don't Mark as a huge upgrade at this point. I like him, but I would hope for more, if I was a Cards fan. The Cards are likely to deal for shortstop help.

Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,

Is it just me or has Steve Jackson still hasn't figured out when to speak his mind and when to zip it?

It's not often a player publically either disagrees with and/or contradicts two head coaches in one season. However, that is exactly what Steven has done.

Do you see any fall out from this and if Jackson continues to have a falling out with Haslett will that be a factor on whether Haslett gets a shot at coaching the Rams next year?

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe Haslett needed to check Steven's website to see whether he was gassed or not.

namvet72: do you think that the rams will ever get someone who can recognize talent
(not just stats) before drafting and spending big bucks
Jeff Gordon: They did a pretty nice job with this draft class, so there is hope.

Franklin: Oh Jeff,

What are the chances of Mizzou QB understudy Chase Patton getting an undrafted free agent contract in the NFL? I recall the star-crossed Kirk Farmer getting such a run, though admittedly short, with the Rams.

It's me,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: He could end up in a camp, yes. The Matt Cassel Rule could be in play.

J Lee: What is with all our local teams? They are all good at getting close to greatness and they can either never keep it going(Rams, Cards) or they can never get it going at all(Mizzou, Blues, SLU). When are the Cardinals going to get the for sure players to round out the team instead of gambling? When will the Rams actually have a later round draft pick turn into a star or even a good player? When are the Blues gonna get another great franchise type player, either by draft or signing? When are the college teams gonna realize that they can only recruit a few great bluechippers and that the rest has to be done the oldfashioned way, player development. You take a guy that nobody wants, that has no experience and you teach him the right way.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams had a Mr. Irrelevant starting at MLB. That doesn't happen every year. As for the Blues, I believe both Oshie and Berglund will be stars. Same with Erik Johnson. Are they franchise guys? We'll see, but they don't come along often.

Alan: Forgetting the ifs and buts...do you think Rasmus will be starting in CF on opening day? And if so will he be hitting lead-off or will he be down lower in the line up?
Jeff Gordon: No, I don't think he'll be the starting CF right away -- unless there are two trades.

Tank: Hey there Gordo, I know the Blues have had more than their fair share of injuries but it seems like there has been an absurd amount of injuries through out the entire NHL this year. Have there been more injuries this year than past years. Has this just been a freak year or can the injuries be linked to something i.e. poor ice conditions, or poor player conditioning? One more question before I go. Why does the NHL not have to give the status of a players injury? Its really effecting my fantasy team.
Jeff Gordon: The NHL has that rule to protect players, who have their injuries targeted for abuse. As for the overall injuries, the player are bigger, faster and stronger -- and yet the rink size is the same.

ScrewyLouey: Jeff, do you have any information on the team's ownership situation. Will it stay the same, is the team up for sale, moving to L.A., etc.?
Jeff Gordon: Nothing to say at this point, other than the fact Chip has a firm evaluating offers as they come in.

jkoch25: Gordo, what is the hold up on the Miller deal? What kind of language are they working out still? DG says that teams are acting like Miller is signed, but he hasn't signed on the dotted line yet.

How is the Rhodes deal coming along as well? Are we at the top of his list, or are we still with the whole of the pack?
Jeff Gordon: Nothing new on Miller. As for Rhodes, there is lots of competition.

HP: Gordo, where do I start after MU loss to Rock Chalk? Two weeks to prepare and what did KU see about MU that MU didn't see about KU.

1. MU coaches too loyal to subpar senior players (Garrett). Defense as a whole overrated with so many experienced players returning. We kept waiting for improvement, but never happened. If we don't have decent backup players then next year will be a L-O-N-G Y-E-A-R! Reesing had all day in pocket, no blitzing. How can KU be motivated and not MU?
2. Chase Daniel stock has gone down this year. First 3 series were 3 and outs, and Daniel passes nowhere near targets. Whatever happened with running plays with RB Washington who gains 5+ yds a carry to set up pass?
3. This MU team mirrors 2000 Rams...all offense no defense...and same general cockiness. I will throw throw throw ball and you must stop me. Post game press conference and we get to hear Daniel state, "at least we get to play next week in title game, where KU can only attend if they buy tickets".

From 5-0 to 10-4 (loss to OU and bowl victory). Can you say $2.5M to Pinkel well spent.......NOT!!!......at least not until he understands how to "adjust" to what the opposition gives him during game.
Jeff Gordon: Tiger fans all feel your pain.

DonovanOsborne: Hey Gordo,
thanks for checking in with the fans we really appreciate it. I was wondering if there has ever been a conformation with what is going on with Trever Miller, and it has been reported that the cardinals low-balled Arthur Rhodes so he will not be coming here. Any truth? This team is like following the President's office, complete with spin doctors and press secretaries.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Many bidders for Arthur, so there is no reason to bid low unless you don't really want him.

deebox: Hey Gordo how are you getting around in our first snow of the year. I see every one wants to give up freese in any deal, I think you keep freese around in my opineon he will be our next third basement for a long time. And could play some out field in 09,and be a power riht hand bat off the bench. And back up first, short or third.
Jeff Gordon: I'd keep Freese unless the Cards are getting back a shortstop. Then I would try to keep Glaus for three more years and let Wallace learn to play left field.

tc22: GORDO-
The Winter Meetings are coming. This team needs plenty of quality pitching and a new middle infield. However, management continues to cry "poor" while they pack the new stadium and successfully market team merchandise. How much profit does this club expect to make each year since the new stadium opened while they maintain a payroll of $100-102 million?
Jeff Gordon: The team IS profitable, but now the Cards, like most mid-market teams, have to worry about where the economy will take revenues this year. There is a real chill now in places like Houston and Atlanta, which could face more payroll slashing, new stadiums or not.

LAFANFROMSTL: Who are the Rams that want it (desire) and can bring it (talent)?

What is cooking with the Cards? Should the signings take off today? Will/Should those lefties sign with the club? Do the Cards think they have enough starting pitching? Will Renteria be our shortstop next year?

I admire the Blues for the way the have responded to adversity so far. It could stand them in good stead when the injured start returning.
Jeff Gordon: The signings will start Tuesday, across baseball, after arbitration offers run their course. We'll see where that takes Edgar (Giants?) and the rest the guys start going.

As for the Cardinal issues . . . we'll see how it all plays out. They need more pitching, better middle infield offense and help at the end of the bullpen.

sltest: I hear the salary cap is likely coming down in the NHL, does this help the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, because this team can't afford to spend to the cap.

sltest: Legacy is due for a new deal after this year, is he playing himself off the Blues. Also, goalie pads will change next season and Legacys’ impossibly large leg pads will be trimmed down a few inches a piece, does something like this enter into the Blues decision on Legacy or is the impact too speculative? The implication from the cut in pad sizes are that smaller goalies will need to rely even more on reflexes and Legacy is quite a bit older than the average goalie.
Jeff Gordon: The deal with Legace is this: Mason is playing better, for now, and has more contract time. And Bishop is the future. Manny will have to play very well to return.

tc22: GORDO-
What are the chances of the Cardinals trading for SS Khalil Greene and signing him to a longer contract? (He's scheduled to hit the free agent market in 2010).
Jeff Gordon: Trading for him shouldn't be tough, since San Diego is dumping salary. I wouldn't extend his contract until I see if he can make some progress as a hitter. He is too inconsistent to pay top money to.

Joe R. from Pa: Jeff,

I, like many Cards fans forget what has happened in the past and want immediate gratification. That being said is it usually the norm for very few deals to take place prior to the winter meetings? When things do heat up do you expect the powers that be to make a major plunge or will we have to be content with subtle if any, upgrades?
Jeff Gordon: The fun starts this week.

Brett G.: I was at the game Saturday and a little nervous about this week. Is OU going to have this in the bag by halftime?.... The D really needs to make a few stops. KU's third down conversion % had to be ridiculously good! WHAT, if anything, can they do to keep it close and somehow pull this out? I'm not bandwagon by any means, but if OU puts up 60 the last couple weeks, the over/under could set a new record!
Jeff Gordon: OU will have the game locked up after 15 minutes if Mizzou doesn't get a grip.

wwalker: hey jeff,

sick of talking rams- blues give effort and you can honestly see some talent from the younger players why did the NHL make the home team wear the dark colors for the most part. it use to be nice seeing all the different color jerseys come into town. as a kid i use to love going to the barn and look at all the other nhl sweaters under glass .
Jeff Gordon: It's important to play with all three sweaters to keep those jersey sales rolling.

bfulton: I hate to throw any Ram under the bus, but I'm ready to give up on Bulger. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume that there aren't any Ryan's or Flacco's in this year's draft. Who are the free agent QBs that the Rams can bring in next year?
Jeff Gordon: There are lots of good QBs in the draft. But taking a high No. 1 QB, paying him, and playing Bulger at the same time will be tough.

BillP: Hey Jeff, if Marty Schottenheimer is being considered by the Rams for HC, then they should go for it. In the beginning I was all for Haslett as HC, but lately as the issues have surfaced on Jim ( Bulger's QB play, Incognito's actions, etc ) I haven't been impressed with Haslett's responses. I get the impression that he tends to side with the players a little too much and it interfere's with his decision making..........what do you think? (remember, even Marty posted a winning record(8-6)with Banks as his starting QB in Washington back in 2001, what previous Rams coach can say that?) Marty ball seems to win where ever he goes (except in the playoffs) and the Rams need solid direction fast. I'm beginning to think Haslett isn't the guy. Your take?
Jeff Gordon: Don't fault Jim for protecting his guys in the media. Believe me, he is no bleeding heart.

RICO J SUAVE: From one Jeff to another:

When was the last time that a MLB player was named the MVP of their league yet did not start in an All-Star game of the same season in which they won the award?

~Suave
Jeff Gordon: And I wouldn't be shocked if it happened again next year.

Razzmanian Devil: Gordo, my question is regarding Skip Schumaker. With talk of moving one of our more powerful outfielders (Ank, Lud), what is Skip's worth to the franchise moving forward. Is he seen as an everyday leadoff man, especially with the Razzmanian Devil in the rear-view? There was a lot of press last spring about Skip's offseason workout program. Any chance that SWAT team memeber in L.A. has him in death-match with a fire-breathing, flame-throwing, left-handed robot?
Jeff Gordon: He is a workout freak, yes. I see him as a great fourth outfielder capable of starting for long stretches. But he lacks power and base-stealing ability, so it's tough to get 550 to 600 bats without one skill or the other.

xavier: will paul kariya return this week ? any updates on him ?

thanks
Jeff Gordon: I don't have an update, but MAN this team needs him on the power play.

hugeCardfan: Freese made an impressive jump from A ball to Memphis. All that seems left to prove is that he can hit in the majors. Wallace tore up AA and then did the same in the AFL. I suppose that some time this year Wallace will get his chance in AAA. In the mean time, wouldn't giving Freese a shot in St Louis make some sense. This guy seems talented enough to play third for someone and appears to have a very short window with St Louis... Any chance he sticks with the team out of ST and backs up Glaus?

P.S. Thanks for defending a guy who, by my account, should need no defending. I think Mo did a great job last year and am looking forward to seeing what he nets this winter. Still, I hope he has thick skin...the "entitled" are not easily impressed.
Jeff Gordon: I'd want to keep Freese down on the farm until he could get a lot of at bats. He is coming fast. Why stall that? This is why Wallace may play some left field. Or Freese could move around.

StL Resident: Gordo,

Why don't you guys do a story on the guy who runs out on the field at the Dome to get the tee after kickoffs? He shows more hustle there than the entire team.

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I enjoyed the piece FSN Midwest did on him for the all-access show.

StL Resident: Gordo,

Why should we watch the Rams anymore?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, there is no reason to do that.

Griff21: KT now has 500+ goals & 1000 points. is he HOF material? I wanna say yes, but he never won a cup and he is only 70-something in all time scoring.
Jeff Gordon: He's got a ways to go -- there are a lot of scorers with a lot of points these days.

harryt: If Carpenter is through due to injury, isn't his contract probably insured so the Cardinals could recoup part of his salary? Thank you. Harry Johnson, Peoria, IL
Jeff Gordon: I'm not sure how much of that is insured, due to his extensive previous injury history.

StL Resident: How long until baseball season?
Jeff Gordon: Can't wait for spring training.

jimboscia: Jeff

Any reaction from the Steve Stone comments on the Cardinals and their refusal to spend?

I think Stone has it right. What say you?
Jeff Gordon: Is $100 million too little to spend? You could argue that $110 might be more appropriate in this market. On the other hand, teams are winning with player development and lower payrolls.

To me, the fact the franchise has really increased its player development investment is key. A lot of cash went into Latin American players this year and they is locking in most of their amateur picks. That offsets the argument about $100 million vs. $110 million.

David: Hey Gordo,

With the Rams in such disarray (minus our great punter and kicker), should they be looking to take an OT like Andre Smith or Michael Oher with their first pick, or should they just go with the best available player?

Any Cards rumors you can throw at us? The well seems to be dry right now.
Jeff Gordon: Baseball will heat up soon, trust me.

I'll still go for the OT, because I think they'll be the best players available (other than QBs).

bodomchild85: What is the status of Chris Carpenter? I had heard that by late November we'd be running tests and no more about him.
Jeff Gordon: Don't count on him. Don't! If I'm Mozeliak, I take the medical updates and use them soak up coffee stands. He must make sure he has five or six other guys.

curran8806: Any news on getting rid of Izzy and maybe signing a solid closer this year?
Jeff Gordon: Scarily enough, the team is considering bringing him back. I'd don't mind that, but not as the closer. He's a great guy and a warrior, but come on . . .

Big Rich 99: Why are the tight ends on the "Lams" mediocre? How would we know how good or bad they are? We never throw to them to know if they are good or bad. Randy McMichael was a very good tight end averaging over 45 receptions a year until he came here. Anthony Becht has averaged over 20 receptions (admittedly not great) a year until he came here. I guess we'll never know how good Klopfenstein could be when he gets 9 catches a year. Let's face it, we don't use tight ends on this team, Cam Cleeland came here and died. God bless Jackie Smith, he's the last tight end in St. Louis. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Well, Al was committed to using his TEs Sunday. The results were not encouraging.

hugeCardfan: The rule 5 snatch seemed to work pretty well last year. Still, he lost a lot of hitting/fielding opportunity. Do you see him in Memphis this year? If so, would that still constitute a major league contract and his first (or is it second) option year?
Jeff Gordon: If Barton is at Memphis -- and he probably will -- I don't know what contract year that will be.

donaldworrell: If Randy Wolf (Houston) becomes a free agent then I think the Cards would go after him as a Left Handed starter. He would not be a big money guy but resonable for the cardinals to sign.
Jeff Gordon: Houston may not keep him, due to payroll cuts. In that case, yes, by means, go get Wolf. Perfect fit here.

Alex Ferrario: Hey Gordo,
Any news on when Kariya or Oshie is back in the line-up
Jeff Gordon: Oshie could be several weeks still. That was a nasty injury. Kariya, I'm not sure.

Razzmanian Devil: Gordo, Do you think the Cards are considering any minor league trade options as starters for the middle infield? Yunel is the only option I've heard that even sounds intriguing, and there just aren't a lot of young shortstops available. Does Mo have the stomach to start the season with a Brandon Wood, or Jason Donald at short?
Jeff Gordon: There may be more shortstops available than you think. We'll see. I would talk to the Rangers about their young SS, since Michael Young has no-trade protection.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Any chance we see Freese push Glaus out of the hot corner sometime in 2009? I'm imagining a circumstance where Glaus goes terribly cold (April 08) and Freese is scorching hot. I like Troy as much as the next guy, but I'm just curious if you think we'd see Freese get a real shot and move Glaus for some prospects or mid-level pitching at the deadline.

I ask b/c I'd hate to see us going into 2010 with an unknown quantity at 3B.
Jeff Gordon: I wouldn't move Glaus at the deadline unless the team is totally in the tank. Otherwise, play it out, offer him arbitration and get something back if he goes to free agency.

JC: Do you think B. Wood or Adenhart from the Angels would be a fit for our needs? Wood has yet to blossum at MLB level but dominated the minors for a few yrs now...and Adenhart is a 4 or 5 start SP prospect depending on who you ask...and would be a nice addition to fight for a #5 SP slot. Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Nick Adenhart, I don't know much about -- other than he was well-touted last spring. Wood seems pretty inconsistent and too much like other Cards prospects.

Dave: Do you think Charlie Weiss will lose his job at Notre Dame?
Jeff Gordon: Yes -- 15 losses in two year is too many.

Griff21: i wasnt thrilled with the Stempniak for Coly & Steen. from a player standpoint I dont know enough about the 2 we got other than they were highly touted only to end up in the doghouse in Toronto. Financially it seems reasonable as both Coly and steen combined will make less than stemp for the remainder of the contracts. whats your take?
Jeff Gordon: I didn't like the deal. Stempniak is the best player in the deal. This was like the old Ron Caron deals, quality for depth.

Ray: Hey Jeff, what is your take on Mark McGuires chance this year for the HOF?
Jeff Gordon: Zilch. He's got to come clean to have any chance.

Razzmanian Devil: Elvis Andrus?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah -- he's not ready for this year, perhaps, but he is two steps ahead of Kozma.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I imagine you are talking about Elvis Andrus from TEX. What we would possibly have to give up to get arguably their best prospect?
Jeff Gordon: He can't play short there, so something has to give. They don't need a catcher, but they always need pitching and the Cards have surpluses in the outfield and at 3B.

Aaron: What are the chances of a significant change in the Rams front office next year? I am no expert, but that seems to be a weak link in the orginazation.
Jeff Gordon: There will be change, absolutely.

Mike Bolt: What kind of 1st round picks are the rams looking at in 2009? 4th overall? A 9th and 19th pick? Please advise. THANK YOU!!
Jeff Gordon: Tackle, tackle, tackle -- lots of tackles at the top of the draft.

camevan: I haven't heard anything about Brendan Ryan this winter. I think he could be productive with some spot starts at 2B and SS. He is eternally in TLR's doghouse or can he see some significant playing time this upcoming season?
Jeff Gordon: Good question. He is a depth guy now, but he could move in one of these packages. Tyler Greene is progressing to be the same kind of guy.

donaldworrell: Any ideals if the cards pick a rule 5 guy this year? I have looked at the list and do not see any body to help the cards.
Jeff Gordon: Unless there is a great SS there, why take somebody you have to put on roster all year? No way.

enl35794: Who do you think will be the QB for the Rams next season? Will we go after a QB in the draft? Possibly McCoy or Harrell?

Cause, we should all know, Marc Bulger is done in STL.
Jeff Gordon: I trust there will be another-caliber guy in camp to compete with the Bulger. There has to be.

Vince: Earlier you mentioned Michael Young from Texas. Any idea what it would take to pry him from the Rangers?
Jeff Gordon: Wow . . . it would probably take Wainwright and Rasmus, at least. He's an amazing producer.

Josh: Jim Haslett is one of the most delusional people I've ever seen. How can the "picks not really hurt us"? It was 3 second half interceptions, one of which set up the Dolphins FG that put the Rams out of a FG to win and the other a game ender. And how can you possibly not know if your RB is tired or not? I wouldn't think Jackson would lie about that so the blame falls on Haslett. "Our problem is we have to score TDs" then why are you kicking field goals with nothing to lose on the first drive of the game with the ball inside the 10. I just don't get how Haslett continually dodges the real issues here: the players aren't good, the effort is not there (most, but not all games), the execution/preparation (which falls on the staff most of the time) is abysmal. What is he taking to come up with this stuff, I want some.
Jeff Gordon: As far as Jackson goes, he hasn't earned the coach's trust. When he said he was good to go, then took himself on the first play of a game earlier this season, his credibility evaporated. He has to earn that back.

enl35794: Tackle, tackle, tackle.

We need a QB. Bulger is a hack. We need line help, but Bulger is done.
Jeff Gordon: He needs competition, in the least. I'd rather see a veteran with starting experience.

That appears to be it for now -- see you next week!
