DisCard: Good Afternoon,
Okay, color me stunned. They asked 4 Post writers the number one remaining priority and none said closer. If the Cards had a closer last year they would have been in the playoffs, even with a weakened rotation.
Add a closer and the right side of the bullpen falls into place and could be exceptional. They have one lefty (not counting the two minor league signings) and I could name you several teams that made the playoffs with only one lefty.
Depth on the staff would be nice, but you could see from last year that even in a leaner market, last minute pitching was available and almost always is via trade. Wainwright, Loshe and Wellemeyer could well go +20, so a couple of .500 pitchers may be all it takes.
I keeping hearing this closer by committee pitch. I've seen it tried often; but I have seldom seen it work.
Where do you see the closer ranking? If the Mets go K-Rod, what’s the excuse for not signing Wood or Fuentes (latter seems a better bet to stay healthy)? Any buzz on Greene’s character?
Jeff Gordon: I still believe the closer role may be addressed. The market for closers will be defined once the Mets decide between K-Rod, Fuentes and other FA and trade possibilities. K-Rod and Fuentes started out dreaming of five-year deal and now they are down to three years.
I'm intrigued by Wood, since the Cards could back him up with top prospects. The Cards would only bring Izzy back to compete for work, not for a guaranteed role. That leaves Chris Perez as the leading candidate with Jason Motte (16 Ks, 3 BBs in 11 innings) and Josh Kinney (8 Ks, 1 BB in 7 IP) as competitors.
Michael Kent: Jeff ...
It's my humble opinion that the Cards ought to keep Adam Kennedy and give him his fair shot in the last year of his contract. After all, similar to your observation about Khalil Greene in your Dec. 4 column, shouldn't Kennedy be "highly motivated to drive up his market value"?
And as your colleague Derrick Goold reported Friday, Kennedy said he "would have no problem coming back if I knew I was going to get a fair shot at starting. I just want to play."
So the big question is whether TLR understands that Kennedy will be highly motivated to perform big in 2009? As a left-handed hitter, shouldn't Kennedy get the lion's share of at-bats for the 2B position?
Of course, Kennedy has a responsibility to stay out of TLR's dog house. If he does that, shouldn't the signs point to a big season for a middle infield of Adam Kennedy and Khalil Greene?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: I talked to Mozeliak Friday and he noted that Adam's "aggregate numbers" were pretty good. And that's true. His defense wasn't bad, either. Would he play with more zeal if he knew he was destined for 475 to 500 ABs this year? Perhaps. And since Mozeliak is no mood to eat his $4 million contract -- money he couldn't spend elsewhere, like the bullpen -- he is inclined to give it a shot. Adam did hit .280 with 17 doubles in 339 ABs. Three years ago he hit 26 doubles and drove in 55 runs.
9elbirdos: Gordo,
Would Ramon Vasquez be a viable option at second base for the Cardinals?
I know he was a super sub for the Ranger's in the past but does his play warrant at least a look?
Jeff Gordon: Right now, Kennedy is the guy. Mozeliak won't deal him unless another team takes his salary. Since Adam is a .276 career hitter, he is not a bad option -- especially if Miles can be secured as the extra infielder.
Tackleberry: I recently read Goold's column where Mo speculates on the possible return of Kennedy, and says he'd be penciled in as the starter. Tough economic times or not, LaRussa is a chemistry coach. He thrives when he can concentrate on the game and not the locker room. The more distractions he has to deal with, the more he tinkers. He is a Hall of Fame coach, but when he gets over-loaded with personnel problems (injuries included) he starts to make very unorthodox decisions. Often times, in these situations, he ignores the obvious and focuses on the obscure. It seems his "genius" flows best when it flows naturually, not when it is forced. I'd fear this same problematic situation arising if Mo brings Izzy back. Why set up LaRussa to battle with loyalty vs. common sense?
Mo can't fix all the problems with this team in free agency, some of it has to fall on LaRussa and the players. But there is a blueprint for LaRussa's success, Mo should review it.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know that Adam is a disruptive guy. He took his half-time role last season pretty well, all considering. The year before was a mess, true.
Izzy is a good team guy, but if he returned, it would have to be on the condition he earned whatever role he got by pitching well. He has exhausted his margin for error. I don't know if Jason would be willing to go that far.
Tim: I really dont like the Greene trade for a few reasons first of all lets say he bounces back and hits 27 homeruns again hes still probably only going to hit .240-.250 at best and is goin to ad 130 strikouts to a lineup that already strike ou quite a bit it you take out Pujols and Molina. His on base percentage is terrible, we need a SS and a 2b that can get on base and cause some meyham on the base path so the four big bats in our lineup can take care of the rest, he cant provide that. Im sick of watching year after year the Cards finding these players at discount prices for 1 year instead of making commitments to solid players that could substantially improve this team. we have the money to spend I just dont get why front office is perfectly content with having a subpar team and dissapointing some pretty god damn loyal fans that provide that money in the first place. Its pretty much a kick in the face.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards aren't looking for Greene to get on base and wreak havoc on the bases. He will be an extra bat, probably for the bottom of the order. He might drive in 50 more runs than the previous SS without sacrificing defense. I'll take that.
The Cards have made big long-term commitments to Albert, Carpenter, Wainwright, Lohse and Molina. In the past, they took care of Rolen, Edmonds, Isringhausen and Mulder for the long haul. In the future, the club will try to lock the best players in, wherever possible.
CIRAIDER: Gordo, I do not understand why a package that includes Ankiel cannot answer our issues in the pen for a lefty reliever or possibly a starting pitcher. You mean to tell me there is not a team out there who would be interested in Ankiel, Brian Anderson, Boggs and another prospect?
I have heard the excuse that due to Ankiel's pending free agency, we couldn't get value in return. I dont buy it and if we are not going to sign him , trade him, lets get something in return.I am tired of excuses.
Sign Felipe and dump Kennedy. He is a cancer and needs to be removed !
Jeff Gordon: But would Lopez hit like he did for the Cards or do nothing, as he did for Washington earlier in the year? Kennedy's money will count against the payroll one way or another, so the Cards ought to get something out of him.
I agree that Ankiel might fetch a hurler of some description. And somebody has to go from the OF, given the surplus. With all those lefty hitters, that Rick's exit would make sense.
Gary M.: Hey Gordo!
So, I was wondering about the Cardinals 2B options. I read the club has interest in retaining Adam Kennedy. Why keep a guy that wants out? Even if he is cheaper, we don't need a malcontent like that in the clubhouse. Obviously O-Dawg (Orlando Hudson) is out there, though I have a suspicion the Cardinals aren't going to risk dollars like that. Two words for ya, Alex Cora. I've been beating his drum since the 04-05 offseason. Cora's above all an intelligent player, still very capable and surehanded. Alex possesses an exceptional arm, also can be counted on in the clutch. TLR loves a guy like Cora, he plays all over the infield. You think Cora is a possibility?
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy doesn't mind playing here if he's a regular. He just bristled at being the third option last year, after Lopez came. I don't see Cora upgraded the Cards over what they had last year.
proteusjohn: Kind of frustrating that Nebraska, South Carolina, and Clemson all get better bowls with more Payout than Mizzou, but it hasbeen a frustrating year of sports anyway.
Jeff Gordon: At least Missouri will continue to work its Texas recruiting and its fans will have a good time. It's not all bad.
Bob P: What types of pitchers do you see the Cardinals signing over the Winter Meetings?(Relievers, Closer, or Starters) And any specific names? Where do you think the Cards will say the max is for payroll? Also any second baseman or pitchers we might pursuit in the Rule 5 draft?
Jeff Gordon: I look for a $100 million payroll, despite the ongoing concerns about the economy. It's a buyers market now and the Cards could build a nice team with that level of salary. A lefty like Randy Wolf would balance the rotation and add needed depth. Wood or Fuentes at the right price could be possible. One of the Tampa Bay pitchers could make sense. Many options . . .
CardsfanInIL: Brad Penny or Oliver Perez?
Jeff Gordon: I'd take Perez, but I imagine his price will be high -- even in the buyer's market. Penney would be worth a look, but only with a contract that protected the Cards against his chronic shoulder issues.
Tim: This is what I would do if I were GM for a day. Any of it likley or possible
Sign Hudson or trade for Roberts( the Cards need a guy in that line up that can get on base and have speed both provide that)
Sin Oliver Perez or Randy Wolf( Since Carpinter is apparently ok and healing well I think we could mabye shop around Piniero and get his contract out of here so the Cards have more money to not spend. These guys would make major contributions to the Cards staff)
Sign Beimel and/or Wood( Beimel is a solid lefty that would help out alot and Wood proved he can be a solid Closer)
Jeff Gordon: I don't see Pineiro leaving in this tight financial market. Dave Duncan understands that he must try to turn him around this spring. I like Brian Roberts, but that is a high price tag. I certainly wouldn't trade away Ryan Ludwick in that deal, since this team learns so far to the left with its outfield hitting.
Tim: I think the Cards are going to regret keeping Kennedy if they decide to . Its obvious him and LaRussa dont like eachother and it will probably get worse when LaRussa start making his stupid lineups again. What kind of mood would that make in the locker room. The Cards in my mind should just respect his trade demand and try to work something out.
Jeff Gordon: Again, the Cards won't eat his salary. If Mozeliak clears out the infield clutter and gives Adam a chance to start, it could work out.
erik runnels: I desperately wanted the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels or a similar team to pursue Peavy (if not the Cards). Instead, it's da' Cubs. Again. If the Cubs grab him, do we even have a shot?! This is getting ridiculous. It appears as if 2006 was the absolute end of an era in more ways than 1. Consider the Red Sox and Yankeees. Maybe they don't always win it all, but every last season, they advance. Occasionally a Devil Rays or Tigers team slips in, but that's for one season and then they evaporate. With the Cubs about to grab Peavy and the Cards about to gleefully grab another retread, and considering the trend of the last 3 seasons (Soriano, Harden, and now Peavy), do we even have a chance of not becoming the Cubs whipping boy for the next 2 or 3 decades?! Is Colby this good?! We'll let the Cubs have Peavy in lieu of his surrender? Help me see a pot at the end of the rainbow somewhere please. I'm begging.
Jeff Gordon: If the Cubs land Peavy, they will have to make two deals -- one to get prospects to trade, the other to get Peavy. That will deplete their organization, which isn't nearly as deep as the Cards.
If I'm running the Cubs, I'd rather have Wood in my bullpen than Harden in the rotation. Chicago will be pretty good again next season, but Mozeliak could build a better lineup with the resources he has. He just has to be smart about it and trust that kids like McClellan, Perez, Motte, Rasmus, Freese, Wallace, Todd, Craig, Jones, Mather, et al will protect the team from the injury woes that derailed the last two seasons.
Tim: Do you think the Cards would show some interest in Delmon Young? I hear ther looking for a 3rd baseman in the trade were loaded with 3rd base prospects and somethings gotta give.
Id like to see mabye Ludwick and Todd for Roberts
Craig or Freese for Young
Jeff Gordon: Craig and Freese have that sort of trade value? That would be nice, but I doubt that it's true.
Tim: Your Guess. who will be the Cards other lefty in the pen?
Jeff Gordon: There are dozen possibilities. Rhodes and Ohman got offers and there are countless other FAs and trade targets. The market has yet to play out.
Tim: When Perron Burgland Oshie are at their prime what do you see them putting up a year in goals and assists?
Jeff Gordon: Perron: 35 goals.
Berglund: 70 to 80 points.
Oshie: 60 to 70 points.
akaitori: Given the questionable status of Chris Carpenter, do you think management is being disengenuous when it whets fans appetites with predictions about his successful return? Does management sincerely believe in a rejuvinated Carp, or is this a fishy tale akin to dreams of Clement and Mulder?
Khapun Kop - thanks from a fan in Thailand
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are optimistic, but that won't stop Mozeliak from stacking up options for the rotation. He has the resources to do so.
Rich: Good afternoon Gordo,
What kind of future (if any) do you think Alex Barron has with the Rams?
He has been an adequate RT; however, I don't ever see him being Pace's successor on the left side.
Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: This week's benching is another mark against him. Next year will be his money year, so he might actually snap to. But I still implore the Rams to draft a tackle at the top of the first round.
Gabriel 2 Snow: Hi Gordo, is there any indication that Haslett will EVER get off the Bulger bandwagon? It's not as if he could be concerned that it may hurt Bulgers confidence to play Berlin. It certainly can't be he's worried their play could be worse! Aside from evaluating Berlin in real game situations, seeing how the offense runs under him would give us more insight into the viability of Saunders as OC moving forward. Doesn't look like he learned from the Brooks/Delhomme situation at all.
Jeff Gordon: Are you suggesting that Berlin could be Delhomme? If the Rams had a Delhomme on the bench, we would have seen him.
redbirdswin: I'm all for the Cards focusing on pitching at the Winter Meetings. Any inside info on what closer(s) Mo is most interested in from a trade standpoint? Putz or Street? Are there more names swirling than those closer possibilities?
Jeff Gordon: Street's physical injuries scared off the Cards before, so I can't imagine he would be a priority. Putz apparently is up for bidding and the Cards would have to look at that, just as the Mets have.
Zac, Humboldt, TN: Gordo,
I understand the front office not going after Peavy. I was listening to Baseball This Morning with Mark Patrick and Buck Martinez on XM radion and Micheal Barrett was a guest and said that if Jake Peavy was not number one on anything then he would not be a happy guy. Barrett went on to say he respects him by saying that because that is what a leader does. I was thinking though if he were to come to the Cardinals he may be number #2 in the rotation because of Carpenter being #1. That would probably cause problems and the Cardinals do not need anymore problems. If Carpenter were healthy who would you put #1 after Carpenter has done for this club?
With Peavy out of the way, why don't Mo bulk up and go after Lowe, Sheets, or Garland. I like Garland cause he gets you 200+ innings every year, but he does not strike anyone out though. He is another Suppan and we got it done with Suppan.
Jeff Gordon: That No. 1 stuff is silly. The best pitcher at any given time is No. 1, but that changes. If Peavy wants to be surrounded by slug starters, he better expand the list of teams he is willing to go to and include more also-rans. Lowe would be a perfect Cardinal, but his bidding will be high. Sheets is too risky; he's always hurt. Garland I like a lot, for the reasons you mentioned.
redbirdswin: Gordo,
What's your opinon on a Greene/Kennedy MI for 2009? For me, this is a smart move just based on the fact that the Cards scored plenty of runs last year (could get even more now with Greene added) and it was the bullpen/starters not going deep enough that really killed the 2008 club. If a 5th starter is added and an established closer can be had, I see this offseason as a success, and St. Louis will be a greatly improved club for next season.
Jeff Gordon: If Mozeliak spends his money/resources on pitching instead, then living with Kennedy at 2B is much easier.
mitchem11: Although "say all the right things", low-hanging-fruit John Mozeliak gets old in a hurry, I do beklieve he's a pretty sharp guy. However, when I read this morning that the Birds plan to hold on to Adam Kennedy (a dollar and cents move I guess), my opinion of Mo fell quicker than the Dow. Kennedy is a mediocre, middle-aged, whining, pouting infielder. Is there a big demand for those? He clearly doesn't want to be a Cardinal or anywhere around LaRussa (see Scott Rolen). What is Mo thinking? Why would they even think about having him on the team?
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy was sour last year, but he wasn't Scott Rolen sour. Plus, he had a beef about his playing time. A .280 hitting second baseman with a good glove is not the worst thing in the world. Mozeliak would love to trade him, but I don't blame him not wanting to pay him to go away. That is stupid.
skelly89: What is 1 move that the Cards will make that will surprise Cardinal nation?
Jeff Gordon: It's still to come. If the Cards aren't going to make a big play at 2B, then the must add a veteran starter and veteran relievers of note.
Kyle: Hi Gordo,
Anyword on Lopez? If he's willing, I think he'd have a Spiezo roll and possibly platoon at 2B, plus good insurance at SS. I do like his power upside.
Jeff Gordon: He wants dollars, years and playing time. I don't see the Cards going there. Now, if he comes up empty in the market, then things could change.
HEG: Gordo I do not where to begin; first with Mizzou football-they are not in the same league with Ok. & Texas; in my opinion the only true great player on this team is Maclin; the senior LB & Safety have failed miserably in the last 3 or 4 games & I wish Chase Daniel good luck in his business endeavors after graduation because I do not believe he will be drafted; it seems Mizzou's Basketball team is on the right track; Re; the Ram's debacle- they are an embarrasment to the NFL and Ram fans they are not giving an effort whatsoever- granted they have won only 2 games but they are professionals and being paid. I disagree with coach Haslett that Bulger is the future leader for this team; he & Jackson have really earned their huge salaries this year & the sad part is they both on long contracts; the Ram players should not have a complaint if no one showed up for remaining games. Re; the Baseball Cardinals- I like the Greene addition but I was hoping for a Greene & Peavy in a package deal- the Greene could be a crap shoot but you would hope for a season like he had in 07; do you agree with any of these statements?
Jeff Gordon: I agree with most of that. The Rams need to turn Bulger and Jackson around because of the money invested in both. Cutting them, and eating all that cap hit, would only make things worse. Jackson would fetch something in a trade, but not fair value.
It's funny, but the Cards could still creep into the Peavy thing. They have lots of prospects and some of them have no place to play here.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cardinals have serious interest in AJ Burnett and JJ Putz. I have learned to seriously handicap anything that comes from his mouth. Your thoughts on this?
Jeff Gordon: Putz is interesting because it appears the rebuilding Mariners would like some of what the Cards have, especially in the surplus OF department. The Cards liked Burnett before, but would this team give him a five-year deal? Or would Atlanta be a more likely option there, as Buster Olney of ESPN.com suggests?
After the top few pitchers fall, GMs may be rewarded for patience -- because the middle-tier guys aren't going to get the years and dollars they expected. Lohse was wise to take the money when it was there for him, for instance.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What is the word on Brad Penny? It seems he would be no more than a project in 2009, and we could hardly count on him to take the ball 30 times and throw in the 93-94 mph range. Would this really fit our need for more pitching?
Jeff Gordon: Penny is a purely speculative player. The Cards went down that road with Mulder and Clement last year. The terms would have to be favorable, right?
cpoulsen: Thanks in advance for answering my question. Is there anyone on Mo's radar that we might not have heard of yet that could be had in a trade? Kevin Millwood comes to mind.
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is targeting the middle-range hurlers, since their prices appear to be more reasonable than anticipated. I mentioned Wolf as a no-brainer. Houston unexpected backed out of talks with him, citing financial concerns.
We've talked about Penny and Perez. Joe Strauss mentions Andy Pettitte, but I'm leery of his elbow and his salary expectations.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
What is the general layout of the meetings? Is this like a trade show, where MLB has meetings and presentations set up for all in attendance...or more of a social event where you meet with those you want to meet with and leave when it's over? Where and how do you, Strauss and Goold get in touch with Mo for updates?
Jeff Gordon: There are the formal meetings, on Major League Baseball matters, and there are the informal talks between owners, GMs, agents and assorted other baseball people. The key is having all the movers and shakers in one place.
iowacardsfan: Hey Gordo,
What are the chances the Cards will leave the winter meetings with a legitimate closer (albeit a shorter-term deal) to bridge the gap until Perez and/or Motte are ready?
Tom
Jeff Gordon: That may not happen right away, but the Cards could more aggressive in the chase of one more quality starting pitcher. Some agents are feeling the need to grab what they can before all the money is spent. It's an interesting cat-and-mouse game.
But with fewer teams spending aggressively, Mozeliak might land somebody quite solid for a shorter-than-expected contract.
rams fan since gabriel: With the pending Rams record, it looks as if we may get a good first round draft pick. Do you see the Rams possibly taking Tim Tebow or Sam Bradford for their first pick?
Jeff Gordon: Since they are already paying Bulger top dollar, drafting a QB at the top of the draft would be difficult.
Ken: Jeffrey,
Does Mo realize that almost everything he says sounds like corporate spin and a boring, albeit very well rehearsed speech? I know he's not Whitey Herzog, but just once an original here's what I'm trying to do remark would be refreshing. Enough already with "prudent" and "wouldn't be fiscally responsible".
Ken
Jeff Gordon: That's just his style, As long as he does his job, who cares? Fans hang on every word, so he must be careful. At least he gives lots of interviews.
fcoprado: Gordo, 3 more games and this disapointing season ends.I'm looking forward to what this offseason will bring.A couple of weeks ago Bernie wrote a column about the owners feel the pain with fans. Chip said "he is determined to do that", as in changing the losing culture of the Rams. Mmm...I'm skeptical but also optimism. Is it just me or is Bernie the only one to interview Chip. Have you ever interviewed him or even talk to him. What is your gut feeling that Chip will eventually do after the last game and into the first few weeks of January 09.
Jeff Gordon: I've only talked to Chip when he does group things, but I do believe he is a sincere guy. He inherited a tough job. He is trying to do right by St. Louis. I do believe he will hire a real team president capable of changing the culture within the organization. He understands that change is badly needed.
rich: Jeff: Given the Caridnals history of not letting everything be know about a players injuries. How much can we or should we rely on what we've heard about Carpenter being 100%?
Thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak admits that optimism means nothing and that he has to protect himself. So, yes, he will secure additional starting pitching.
Tim: I heard the Cards are serious on Burnett. I have an extremely tough time believing this but could you enlighten me a little?
Jeff Gordon: Let's see where the dollars fall. A.J. wanted a fifth year. Toronto didn't give it to him. Let's see if anybody does. Funny, but the Yankees aren't as gung ho as everybody expected. That has had a trickle down on all the bidding. The owners are keeping this FA market from getting out of hand, at least so far.
LaRamz: Has Henry Ellard ever been considered for the OC ? i don't think Al Saunders is the right person.
Jeff Gordon: That would be a big step for him. Al is a respected coordinator who got stuck with an injury-riddled and deficient team.
Ram_Malavasi: Gordo: Does Darby make the squad next season at RB? I like his attitude and apparent work ethic - not to mention his ability to pick up the blitz (at half SJ's size and a fraction if his salary)...Maybe SJ can learn a few things...
Jeff Gordon: And he can catch the ball, something Pittman did Sunday but something he struggled with earlier. Darby would have an excellent shot next year if these coaches return. If there is total change, then all bets are off.
Tshow: Gordo,
Will there be a team president? Up to recently I heard that there would most likely not be a "team president" position. This must be first and foremost move IMHO.
Sounds like Devaney will be GM? Correct?
Who is going to conduct the coaching search? There is absolutely NO WAY Haslett and the staff returns. They have shown nothing to warrant another year! If Haslett returns the dome will be empty. The organization needs a complete overhaul.
Now the big question is does Chip REALLY want to put in all of the work to do just that? Has there been any more talk of a sell from Chip?
Thanks,
Jeff Gordon: Devaney can be the GM and do a fine. But if the team doesn't have strong leadership at the top -- running the daily operation, making the financial decision, giving the franchise a face -- then brace for additional failure.
I doubt that the next Rams coach will have such a huge persona that a strong organizational leader isn't needed.
NV Cards Fan: Hi Gordo, I am excited to finally see what the management is going to do this year. I figure if we come out of the meetings with at least a reliever then we are doing well. I have my doubts about any big moves happening for the Cards at the meetings. Do you have any specific players in mind that you think will be in discussion for us? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Look at the mid-level starting pitchers. If Mozeliak can grab one of them, then he really gets leverage.
karmon: Gordo I love your comments and thanks for being here for us. I read where the Cards are going to go with Kennedy at second base (and I kind of like that move) and it appears they are going to go the free agency way for the pitching solutions. My question to you is this, If that really is the way they are headed what do we do about the over crowded outfield that we have? Are they going to wait until spring training to see what needs might develope? There does not seem to be that many free agents for starting pitchers that the Cards will be willing to pay the price necessary to be in the running for. Am I missing something here or can you explain this to me.
Jeff Gordon: I still see the OF as an area to deal from, because they have to. Right now you've got Ludwick, Ankiel, Schumaker and Rasmus, following by Duncan, Mather, Barton, Stavinoha on the 40-man roster -- with Jones and Jay at Memphis and Wallace likely to play some left field this year. That's a crowd.
mightymike105: Hey Jeff,
Saturday was not exactly another Norman Quest but it was really ugly. We were just overmatched. Man that OU offensive line was huge! Of course we need better talent to compete better but what about coaching? Especially on defense. I doubt Buddy Ryan could have helped us gainst OU but the defense has dissapointed a lot this year. I think it's time for some changes over there. Do u think Pinkel will make any? I know he is loyal, maybe to a fault to his staff. This team played so confused as a unit especially the secondary. Even with better talent a confused unit is still going to get torched. I hope he addresses this during the offseason.
Jeff Gordon: The D came out reasonably ready to play this time, but OU was just too much. I agree, though -- bigger programs went outside for strong coordinators and got results. Pinkel needs to take a long look at what happened this year, because the other conference coaches did. Look for teams to keep attacking that D until it changes.
JC: With the shift apparently moving to FA's (at least for now) and the focus is pitching...who do you see as good fits for the Cards budget and needs? I know names like Penny, Wolf, Pettite and Perez have been thrown out as SP options and Fuentes and Wood seem to be possible closer options...but I just don't see any of those guys except maybe Wood and Penny being options. Is there any names you think could fit that haven't been thrown out there? Thanks Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: Wolf really intrigues me, because he would add balance to the rotation. And I continue to beat the Fuentes drum.
Brett G.: Painful to watch at Arrowhead.... But, my focus is now on MU hoops. A couple missed free throws from being 8-0 and maybe Top 20 ranking? I like the fire the team is FINALLY showing under Anderson. Seems like they have good depth and have bought in to the system. Now, beating Illinois has to happen this year. 8 years running is ridiculous....
Ok, you might have answered this or went over it before, but any good trade/free agent signings news? I like the Greene deal. The guy had NO legit help in SD. Now AP, Glaus, Lud, Ank, Molina, etc., could slide nicely in the 6th hole.... Another lefty reliever, 2nd baseman or a out-of-nowhere Lohse-esk signing under wraps?
Jeff Gordon: It looks like the Cards will be able to get rotation AND bullpen help, keeping Kennedy at second base for financial reasons.
I agree about Mizzou. I loved the Xavier game, which was theirs to win. Leo hits some free throws and they win that. Beating USC and wasting Cal will look good later.
But come conference play, can the Tigers beat some also-rans on the road? Can they win most of their home games and get to the high side of .500 in league play? Can they advance a few rounds in the conference tourney?
I like English -- one more gun. More depth up front, a point guard under control -- good stuff.
Franklin: Oh Jeff,
Good typing to you, sir.
Question on the future of injured Rams: who do you see having impact among the Rams "out-for-the-year" or "chronically-injured-but-rostered" players? Who stays and plays, who is pink-slipped? Thinking everyone from Justin King to Randy McMichael to Drew Bennett to Tye Hill to Mark Setterstrom.
Thanks for your insights. And, by the way, are you writing while on the radio, during remotes? Amazing multi-tasking!
It's me,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: Holt is slowed now, he may leave. Little is a tough case. How do you replace him? Yet how do you keep paying him?
Gotta keep Pace, I suppose. Trent Green and Drew Bennett have to exit, obviously. Give Hill another chance. Brian Leonard . . . not sure he can play. Not great on special teams and I like Darby better as the third base. Pittman is OK today.
Ryan: Gordo,
Longtime reader first time poster....Love your articles, and appreciate your work! With Mo setting the agenda for the winter meetings, who do you feel the Cardianls will really try to pursue as a starter? How much stock should we put in on the recent Burnett rumors?
Thanks again,
Ryan
Jeff Gordon: I'd be surprised if they got A.J., unless the other bidders bailed. The Braves may be willing to go $60 million for four for Burnett, so that will settle that. But what if they scored both Wolf and Burnett?
Petey123: Jeff, what are the chances the Rams are in St. Louis past 2014. I just don't see anyone from St. Louis stepping up and buying the Rams.
Jeff Gordon: Two words: Rush Limbaugh!
James: Hi Jeff,
Is it really true that ownership still wants to keep Haslett even though it was reported earlier that he had to win two more games? If so, why leak it out to the public, that'll it make all the fans angry if he doesn't make it? If this is true, they both deserve each other and don't espect anything special in the years to come. Many fans I spoken to won't be around if this happens. And is the Peter King report true that ownership will sell the Rams ASAP?
Jeff Gordon: If Chip keeps Haslett and opts not to bring in a new, strong team president . . . wow, it could really be tough to move the franchise forward. That might be like the Blues in the last year of the Laurie Regime when the team was for sale.
dfwramsfan: Gordo,
The best teams in the league (Giants,Tenn,Pitt,Balt)all have a stout Def that starts with STOUT DT play. The Rams have many needs agreed! But a major upgrade at DT needs to be priority over OT and others. What's your take of priorities in order of importance?
Who among the front office was most high on drafting Alex Barron?
Jeff Gordon: Devaney is the new draft guy, so the Barron thing doesn't stick to him. Alex wasn't a bad pick, where he went, but he hasn't developed to his full potential. Some of that is coaching, some of that is Alex, some of that is the bad atmosphere.
The Rams have big money in Carriker and Long. The key to the D-line is developing them into impact guys. Ryan and Adeyanju have upside, too. DT is a need, but I'm not sure I go there first.
Max: Hey Gordo,
Along with being a Cardinal Fan I also root for my hometown Brewers. I know, don't ask, it gets complicated at times! Watching Ryan Braun struggle two years ago at third base prompted his move to left field and after a full season and no errors I guess you can say it went pretty well. That got me thinking, do you think there is any significant chance the Cardinals might move David Freese or Allen Craig to left field? Having three very qualified prospects at third base is never a bad thing in terms of trade value, but moving Freese and/or Craig to other positions (second base for Craig?) might allow the Cardinals to really have a solid group of hitters (Rasmus, Wallace, Freese, Craig) to build around and pair with Pujols, Ludwick and Molina in 2010.
Thanks for your time,
Max
Jeff Gordon: Actually, Brett Wallace will go to left instead. He made Class AA last year and could be in the bigs next summer. There is no place at 3B for him.
bfulton: Did Goldberg's performance on Sunday dampen, in any way, your call for an OT with the Rams first round pick in the next draft?
Jeff Gordon: Not at all. Adam has done solid work there, but Pace's age/history and Barron's lack of progress make taking an OT critical.
Troy: Jeff, just curious. When Steven Jackson held out this summer, you just knew that he would have physical problems later in the year. It seems like almost all players that holdout during training camp seem to have problems staying healthy all season. The only one that was successful that comes to mind was Emmitt Smith. I understand that the player careers are short and they need to cash in while they can, however, it just seems like it becomes counter productive on the field at least for that current season. No real question, just a thought.
Long time supporter in the waste land of Utah.
Jeff Gordon: Jim Haslett would agree with you. Jackson would not-- but his play and injuries this year speak to the issue.
bjwstl: Hey Gordo,
Couple of card q's. Is the A.J Burnett rumor by Ken rothensal just a rumor or a fact. He said the Cardinals put in a good offer. I would be suprised if we outbid the Yankees. On the other hand, Ive heard that Burnett asked about St. Louis. Also what is the chance we go after JJ Putz, Huston Street, or bj ryan for closer. Is it true that Adam Kennedy is our starting 2nd baseman?. Last but not least can we trust the positive Chris Carpenter feedback? It's hard to with the past.
Thanks again
Jeff Gordon: Trust the Carpenter feedback when he is going 7-8 innings start after start after start. Everything else is just noise.
If Atlanta is willing to go $60 million for four for Burnett, how do the Rams top that?
I like the idea of signing a FA agent starter, then weighing the FA reliever market vs. trade options.
warner11: Hi Jeff,
Enjoy your column. What is the likely hood that Haselett is brouught back as HC. I think he should be given a shoot to coach in lieu that he brings hi sown players. You can't reaaly get on hi scase which the little talent on the team. Secondly , can they please get rid of Bulger. He is washed up. All the best NYRamsfan
Jeff Gordon: Given Haslet's impact on the D the last few years, he is coaching many of his own guys. Results aren't good.
Bulger is likely to stay because of his contract, but he needs competition.
Rambunctious: Hi Jeff: Do you think Adam Carriker is living up to his early selection in the draft? Shoulder injuries can take a long time to heal completely, and it can take even longer for one's strength tcompletely return. Do you know if his shoulder is 100%, or is he just trying to make the best of it? Thanks in advance ..
Jeff Gordon: Don't know exactly how beat up he is, but he hasn't been much of a factor.
Matt: Gordo,
What's the deal with us keeping Kennedy now? Is LaRussa actually going to play him as our full-time 2nd baseman, or is this going to be another Scott Rolen situation? I know he's probably cheaper than some of the other options, but are we now reduced to keeping a player who doesn't want to play here just because our other needs are going to eat up the rest of our budget? Say it ain't so. They should try to add Kennedy as a throw in and just cut their losses with him. Sign a 2nd baseman for cheap if they need to on a 1 or 2 year deal. I don't see why they're going to keep Kennedy if there's a chance that he's going to sit on the bench and rot.
Jeff Gordon: Eating Kennedy's $4 million might keep the team from adding pitching help. In that context, why not keep the .280 hitter and use him more? Kennedy isn't another Rolen. He is sour, but laid back.
Nobody wants Kennedy as a throw in.
Steve (Roch. NY): Jeff,
I just read in Peter King's column "I think the Rams are for sale and they're not getting the kind of offer the owners there want." Is he privy to information that the P-D writer's aren't? Every time this topic comes up the answer is that Chip and co. aren't actively looking to sell.
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: No news there. The Rams have been taking bids for some time. And, no, the desired local ownership hasn't emerged yet.
Jacob: Gordo,
Anyone who watched the Cardinals last season will tell you that their biggest weakness was the horrendous bullpen. Although I like Perez and Motte, I don't think either are quite ready to take on the job as closer. What closer do you think the Cardinals have the best chance of signing?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak is skeptical of the FA relief market. Of the bunch, Kerry Woods would seem the be the most logical bet.
David: Hey Gordo,
Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Cards are a major contender for A.J. Burnett. Is it possible that a healthy Carp and holding on to Kennedy could make enough money available, or are we about to experience Peavy-disappointment all over again?
Do they Nielsen ratings show how many households in STL were pulling for Kurt over the Rams?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards are bidding on FAs, yes, but as noted earlier, the Braves have big money on the table for Burnett.
ueaces: Gordo,
You are the GM for the Cardinals. You have an option for either a quality starter or closer. Which do you pursuit?
Thanks for all your great work.
Jeff Gordon: Closer -- even with the hard throwers on hand. McClellan could easily move to the rotation.
Tony Banks: Wow, this team really sucks. Rich Brooks looks like Vince Lombardi compared to this Haslett chump.
Jeff Gordon: Coming from Tony, that stings.
Jeff Wade: Jeff, thanks for a great write in column. I have a few things to throw at you How much does Bulger pay you for being his PR man? I thought your write in yesterday gave way to much credit to Bulger and his offense for their 1 touchdown when our defense gave him the ball inside the 5 yard line. Then we were 1 play from having to kick a field goal there. Also Marc made up for that by giving them a touchdown on the pick. A lot of people read your column and many take to heart what you say since you are the man on the know. You continue to say things like Frerotte was terrible here, and Green is no good. You can't make a judgement like that unless they get to play regularly. Maybe you are right that Green is done but lets finish the season with him and really be sure.
Jeff Gordon: Can't we take a week off from the Bulger bashing and focus on Jackson and his fumbles for a week? Cut Marc a little slack for a week.
STLFANWI: Jeff, the thought that MO would even consider Kennedy again at 2nd is concerning. I'd much rather see Lopez or Ryan, and I'm not saying they are the answers, but Kennedy offers no speed or pop or energy to better this team. He made 7 errors in 84 games, so his defensive skills are average at best. The fact that the Cardinals are considering him because they don't want to eat a portion of his $4mil is lame.
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy has nice range. He needs to be more active offensively, especially with run production, but he is not a terrible option for a year. Plus the team can upgrade there in midseason if need be. There will always be 2Bs available, as we've seen.
Encino: What is the NFL record for fewest touchdowns scored in a season? Maybe this team can make the record book...
Jeff Gordon: This is my no means the worst offensive team ever. But it is agonizing to watch these guys not score.
john: When do you expect the Rams to fold and move?
Jeff Gordon: Fold? Never. The franchise is worth about $900 million. Move? We'll see.
matt: Gordo-
Now that you have had some time to watch Steen and Colaiacovo, what is your view on the trade? Personally, I have been pleased with Colaiacovo and disappointed with Steen, but realize more time/patience is needed for him to adapt.
Jeff Gordon: I agree. Carlo shows more offensive potential than I anticipated, since he didn't do much in Toronto. Conversely, Steen is a handy and versatile guy with more skill than we've seen.
LaRamz: How likely is Chip going to consider other Coaches, not just because of the "Rooney Rule" but their just may be someone better than Haslett.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are checking other candidates already, from what I've heard.
Jimmy Kennedy: Wow, it's embarassing how bad this defensive line is. Maybe I can come to Rams Park and show em how it's done.
Jeff Gordon: No thanks.
BillP: Hello Jeff, I'm looking fwd to Mizzou going to a more balanced offense next year and being able to run the ball. Do you see this happening? ........quick side note, I think at this point it's unfair to criticize Pinkel for not beating OU or Texas. He's just now elevated this program and some of this has to factor in with timing too. We don't play these teams every year and last year Texas and McCoy struggled. Heck, last year Texas had to come from behind at home to beat a lousy Nebraska team. If Mizzou had played Texas last year, home or away, they win. So a little luck wouldn't hurt. Thanks and have a good week!
Jeff Gordon: Washington could balance things up next year, if the team goes that way. Let's see what Gabbert does (or doesn't) do with passing reads in this attack. Not everybody can run a spread.
Frank: Hi there Gordo,
From the hindsight is 20-20 files --- What, in your memory, is the best would-be trade that almost was (but sadly never happened) from Winter Meetings gone by? What was the worst trade that almost happen but, thankfully, didn't come to pass?
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: That would be a better one for Strauss -- he would know that off the top of his head.
Mike: Gordo,
In the wake of Mizzou's pitiful showing vs. OU and UT over the last two seasons, is there any chance we'll see Pinkel make significant changes to the offense much like he did in the post-Brad Smith Era? The spread worked to a degree with Daniel at the helm, but wouldn't it make sense to transition to an OU-style power offense with a pro-style QB (Gabbert) now at the helm? I think it's clear that Mizzou can't win a conference title running the spread so long as Oklahoma and Texas continue to dominate on D...
Jeff Gordon: It's worth talking about. Daniel was born to run the spread. Gabbert? Not so much. Washington can grind on the ground and I'd like to see the team tighten up the line gaps and muscle up some more.
It'll be an interesting spring, for sure.
mike: how about a trade of green and kennedy to the oriolesfor roberts and then resign lopez to play short
Jeff Gordon: Greene and Kennedy wouldn't fetch Roberts and Lopez isn't reliable at short.
Short Yellow Bus: Hi, I'm here to pick up Jim Haslett- do you know where I can find him?
Jeff Gordon: Rim shot!
Kurt Bellon: Hiya sir,
I'm a lifelong Cards fan away at school up near Chicago. Apart from the cold winters, the biggest thing bugging me up here is all these Cubs fans already beating their chests about Peavy and yada yada. The only thing I have to cling to is hope. Hope that Johnny Mo is gonna step up this offseason. With the economy bringing down the price tag of free agents, do you think there is any chance Mo would sign a Lowe or Johnson rather than a Penny or Perez. Maybe even a Burnett??? I mean we didn't offer arbitration to Braden for a reason right?
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Don't know about Burnett, but look for Mozeliak add a decent mid-staff starter, if the market stays as it.
I Needahammer: It is obvious that the only thing our "owner" is concerned about is saving money and not getting involved with football decisions. At least his mother checked the horoscope before making any decisions... I hear Chip plans to check with Shaw in the off season and likes the idea of bringing back HAZ. WE ARE IN LAME DUCK STATUS UNTIL A REAL OWNER IS FOUND. PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE WILL BUY THE RAMS.
Jeff Gordon: Might want to take up a collection, and fast.
Steve o' the north: Gordo
Do the Rams have a team psychiatrist?
I'm serious.
Steve
Jeff Gordon: it's too late for this season. Nothing can pull up their spirits now.
Adam: Any news on the Cardinals being a serious bidder for AJ Burnett? This would most likely take up the remainder of money left to spend this season but would also solidify a rotation even if Carpenter were not able to pitch. He is an injury prone guy though and we have had horrible luck with that recently, will this in anyway scare Mo away? Can we really outbid the Yanks and Braves for this guy anyway? After next year though we should have more money coming off the books and possibly Rasmus, Wallace, and Freese all playing to offset bigger salaries.
Jeff Gordon: The 2010 season looks interesting, with lots of low-cost kids due to arrive. Glaus exits, probably. That's a lot of flexibility. The Cards like A.J. but $15 million per for four years . . . wow, that's a step.
BigR: Who could the Rams trade to pick up more draft picks and dump salary? Also where do we start as far as drafting, o-line, d-line?
Jeff Gordon: Can't just dump salary, due to the cap. The big contracts usually have big bonuses pro-rated over the length of the contract for cap reasons. And there isn't much to trade for more picks. And you can't progress with too many kids coming aboard at once.
Dan: Does this talk about starting Kennedy mean that we let Lopez walk? Also is Jarrett Hoffpauir considered a major league prospect?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, Lopez walks in that scenario, Hoffpauir isn't a speed or power guy, but he hits well enough to have a chance. I'd rather have a speed or power guy once Adam is finally gone.
The Ford Family: Hey Gordo, do you know of any NFL rules that would allow teams to change their schedule. I can speak for the whole Lions franchise when I say we would love to have a chance to play the Rams this year. We really don't want to finish 0-16. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Wny not a special made-for-TV postgame battle, to see which team is worse?
Tony: Assumption 1 -- Rams have not really started to plan their front office reorganization.
Assumption 2 -- they won't until the season ends.
Assumption 3 -- good candidates for President and/or GM will be deep into conversations with other teams; we'll lose them.
Assumption 4 -- good coaching candidates will decline to be interviewed because our front office will be in transition.
Assumption 5 -- of all teams making offeason changes, the Rams will be the last to get their ducks in a row, missing out on a lot of talent for front office and coach. They will eventually get someone who has no other options at least this year, and claim he's the perfect fit.
Assumption 6 -- Assumption 5 will be a final slap in the face to a fan basae that has been given little reason to stay loyal.
Disagree with any of this ?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know how serious Chip is about creating new, top-down management when the team is up for sale. He is in a tough spot. I'll believe he'll put somebody in that role, but what if he doesn't?
Then the interim, temporary feel to the organization would scare off good head-coaching candidates and make Haslett more likely to try again. All of that is ominous.
Nathan: Hello Jeff, lifetime Cardinals fan now living in Bloomington,MN so I always look forward to your chats since there is nothing on the Cardinals up here. Just a quick question and comment. First, who do you think is a better option to trade at this point: Rick Ankiel or Ryan Ludwick? I would say Ankiel because he has better trade value with his defense. Plus, we need the right handed power bat in the outfield since we have Rasmus awaiting. My comment, I personally feel that the Cardinals farm system is at one of it's best points but it won't matter if we keep all this talent down there and not make moves to help out the big league club. Thanks again.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. I'd trade Rick, due to all the lefty outfielders stacked up. Ludwick is under control longer and adds RH power.
Agreed about the farm -- it's nice to have prospects, but unless they become assets to the big club, who cares?
Steve: What would it take to get Cano from the Yankees? Ankiel? Anderson? maybe take Kennedy off our hands?
Jeff Gordon: Why would they want Kennedy? Maybe Ankiel and Anderson interests them, though.
cardswin17: Do you believe the Cardinals will consider trading Troy Glaus to free up salary space? I know he has a non-trade clause that he would have to waive, but it seems we're just as deep at third base as we are in the outfield. Even if St. Louis assumes half his salary, we still free up money for any big-name acquisition in the lot.
I felt his statistics were more of a function of AB with RSP and his spot in the Cardinal lineup. Just as Ankiel, Ludwick, and Duncan have put up numbers as "new" players just getting their ABs, I feel that any of the 3rd basemen in waiting would put up similar production to Glaus' at a fraction of the cost.
What are your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Glaus is too good to move this year. He helps you win -- and this team CAN contend, with a bit more pitching depth. In 2010, maybe you turn the page and play the kid.
therealdealankiel: Gordo,
Is there room to add TWO starters? Waino and Lohse are in. Wellemeyer and Piniero should compete for what they get. Carpenter is a walking question mark. One addition protects us from Carp, but two additions protect us from Wellemeyer/Piniero being relied on as more than a 5th starter. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I'd add one more quality guy, then add bullpen help so that McClellan fights for a rotation spot, too. That would be sufficient.
Richard: I have serious concern about the Cards not picking up a GOOD rotation pitcher. We cannot rely on Wellemeyer or Piniero to make solid contributions because of their inconsistency and Carp (read my lips) will not be ready for the opening game of the season. Why do the Cards not feel this same concern or am I just another village idiot? If this does concern them, why is there not much talk from the organization?
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak agrees and he's working on it.
Griff21: WE need to resign miles, how much would it take ? do other teams have interest in him?
Jeff Gordon: Don't know if anybody else will offer him big money or a starting spot, so why not bring him back.
Lawarence Marmie: Do you think we can trade Jay Zagmutt to the Lions for draft picks? They held onto Matt Millen forever, so apparently they aren't looking for another with superior football knowledge.
Jeff Gordon: Larry's back! Good one.
othawhitemeat: Can we trade Ankiel instead of Ludwick for someone of worth? I like Ankiel, but I feel like he is going to command more than what he is worth in free agency, and feel that Ludwick is going to be more productive. Maybe we can package him and get something of worth!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.
othawhitemeat: Can we package Ankiel w/ prospect to get a good pitcher? I like Ank, but Ludwick is more steady and has a better contract.
Jeff Gordon: That may be the way to get the veteran bullpen the team still needs.
Lawarence Marmie: Could any relevent football mind the Rams bring in as GM or President possibly consider retaining Haslett or his lapdog Venturi?
Jeff Gordon: IF the Rams get a fresh start with the front office -- still a big if with Chip, who still must decide the course of this franchise -- then retaining the staff would be unlikely.
Tim: What would it take to aquire BJ Ryan?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have extra OFs and extra young 3Bs. Why not try to go there?
eddie c: This team (rams) is not worth watching. They have become so predictable, that you could probably look at the remaining games this year and next and go down the list and check off the W's and L's right now. Here's to rooting for a 2 and 14 record. Maybe they'll get the 2nd pick, again, if Cincinnati get hot. Looking for Detroit to pick up. Would be nice for rams to pick first. Don't agree that a LT would be best 1st round pick. Need money player on offense, QB only thing that makes sense, don't care how much money they gave bulger-do you want to win or what? Could always trade bulger in future to another 2 and 14 team.
Jeff Gordon: Trading Bulger and that contract? Not going to happen, at least not for a few years. That does impact the draft.
Dan: Gordo,
Do you think the Orioles could bite on a deal for Brian Roberts for Ryan Ludwick straight up? It would be nice to have that kind of speed at the top of the lineup.
Jeff Gordon: Again, Mozeliak has made it clear that Kennedy is here, barring a dramatic change in market. So forget that. And, again, why trade your only other power RH batter for the long term? Glaus leaves after next season, probably, and then what?
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
Don't you think it would be better for the Yankees to bring in Lowe and Burnett- with possibly Pettite taking less money to come back- rather than spending all that cash on CC Sabathia? I mean, the guy doesn't even want to pitch on the East Coast and no one knows how he can handle playing in a city that actually puts pressure on their atheletes to win? I mean come on- Wisconsion and Ohio don't take time using the New York minute.
Jeff Gordon: Good point -- and $100 million goes further in Milwaukee than $140 million in NYC. Wouldn't it be cool if he decided to stay in Wisconsin?
hugeCardfan: Jeff,
Cards still haven't found that 2d LOOGY. Any info on that front? What is Tyler Johnson"s status?
Jeff Gordon: Can't count on Tyler, as we saw last year with all those hurlers. But I'd expect him back at some point. But Mo is still looking, although the Rhodes overture apparently comes up short.
Bill: If the cardinals were to spend $15 mil per year for 4-5 years on a pitcher, do you think if would be wise to invest that in another starter, or for a closer?
Jeff Gordon: That's too much money for closer. Teams are more likely to develop closers from nowhere than starters. But Fuentes, at the right dollar, would be a nice fit. Or Wood.
Boyd Dressler: I lived in St. Louis when the Chicago Cardinals moved to town. The Bid-Farewells, er I mean, the Bidwills, aka. carpet baggers, duped St. Louis into thinking they would provide a viable football team...all lies. Since then I believe St. Louis fans, always smart, are leary and guarded about sports franchises other than the BB Cards.
Do you believe the same scenario is happening now with Ram ownership? That is to write, are they purposefully putting an inferior product on the field to create an excuse to move the team?
Jeff Gordon: Purposely stinking only costs an owner money. The Rams could leave full houses behind for LA and get away with it, if the stadium issue is unresolved. Losing doesn't make it easier to move any more. It's a wide-open marketplace. The NFL would like to control it, but it can't.
Mike: Since everything is going to hell, do you think that it will be possible for thousands of empty seats in all three sports over the next couple of years?
Jeff Gordon: The economy could hurt the Cards, but the team will be fine. The Blues will be good next year if they skip the golf course outings. As for the Rams . . . yikes!
Griff21: Lopez had a very good run here, otherwise he's just an extra , replaceable player with limited skills. I am glad we have all but passed on this guy. I see no downside in keeping kennedy though , he has a little less pop.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, I've warmed up to it. Adam is OK as a No. 9 hitter.
dave cobler: Hey Gordo;
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the hottest), can you tell me just how hot the rumors are in regard to the talks for A.J. Burnette? Any comments about this matter for the time you have are appreciated also.
Thank you!
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure the Cards have put a bid it, but, again, Atlanta is the hot team on that trail right now.
Alex Ferrario: Hey Gordo,
Any news on Kariya yet??
Jeff Gordon: No, it could be a while. And now Oshie is out again. I thought he came back a little quick from that ankle.
Griff21: How about Randy Johnson? Lefty, knows how to win, should be relatively cheap, short term. isn't that basically everything the cards are looking for?
Jeff Gordon: I'd agree, although the Cards don't see as hot on this. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of him.
Razzmanian Devil: Gordo: As always a pleasure. I told all my cub fan friends to watch out for the Cards last year, and for 2/3 of the year they did not disappoint. Please tell me I'm crazy so I do not get over excited about this upcoming season.
Rasmus CF .290 20 HR's
Luddy LF .300 35 HR's
Pujy 1B .340 35 HR's
Ankiel RF .275 40 HR's
Glaus 3B .270 30 HR's
Greene SS .260 25 HR's
Molina C .300
Pitcher
Kennedy 2B .275 30 2b's
Jeff Gordon: That's too optimistic. Greene might go for 15 to 20 HRs. Kennedy might get 25 2bs. Ankiel would be a 30 to 35 guy. But fans should know that Rasmus will be a real threat to add more power to the mix, just as Greene will. Maybe that's why Mo is so content with Kennedy.
Dan: Okay, make it Ankiel then and have Kennedy play the Aaron Miles role.
Jeff Gordon: Kennedy would not like that. Let Miles be Miles, let Kennedy finish out his contract, let Rasmus lead off and then look at 2B after next season.
That appears to be all this week. That's for all the great comments and questions!
