Tim: If we do trade Ankiel I think we should try everything to work a deal with the Yankees. The way I see it we could get Cano and either Hughes or Kennedy for him. Id rather have Hughes. I think the Cards might have to throw in a little more but it definitly could get done. At that point I would see what we have to give up to get Downs from Toronto. I dont know what that would do to our salary cap but then if possible I would try to sign Fuentes Lowe or Perez. And shop around Kennedy Piniero And mabye Wellemeyer. What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Mozeliak has learned that Kennedy has no trade value, unless the Cards pay his salary. That's not going to happen. Pineiro has limited trade value, so the Cards are better off giving him another year with Duncan. Wellemeyer is a bargain starter who flourishes with Duncan, so trading him isn;t an option.

Trading Ankiel IS an option, especially if the Cards could convert him into pitching help. The Yankees have a lot of guys in play, so keep an eye on that.

If the Angels stay interested in Fuentes, Anaheim will get him. If Mark Teixeira signs elsewhere, the Angels will have the money to easily outbid the Cards. So, yes, Mozeliak may have to go the trade route.

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

Something that nobody has mentioned yet about the Cards in 2009 is that they start the season with only one off day in the first 35 days. Clearly, this puts the onus on Mo and Company to make sure they have five starting pitchers identified and ready to go.

The discussion has been that the Cards will look for another starter as a Chris Carpenter contingency, but with 34 games in 35 days to start the season, I'd almost wonder if the Cards should be looking for two starters because invariably somebody seems to get injured during spring training (e.g., Joel Pineiro last year).

Or, do you feel TLR and DD have enough flexibility with Brad Thompson, Kyle McClellan, and Mitchell Boggs to cover any injury outbreak that might hit the rotation?

Also, given this marathon start to the season, do you think TLR and DD might do anything creative with the rotation to get through that first month-plus? For example, what about going with a six-man rotation, or perhaps a four- or even three-man rotation with the other starters getting three innings guaranteed (but no more) every other day?

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards get April 20 off. Hope they enjoy that.

I agree that additional starting pitching help is needed. As I've said, Mozeliak should use Carpenter's medical updates to sop up coffee stains. They mean nothing. What means something is Carpenter actually making good starts week after week after week. When that happens, then Mo can finally count on them. Until then . . .

Boggs will be a depth guy to start the season. Thompson should be an emergency guy. McClellan is an option IF the Cards add another proven late-inning pitcher.

So, yes, the Cards still need another candidate.

Tim: Would the Cards have any interest in Taveras especially if they start trading outfielders?
Jeff Gordon: This team has a zillion outfielders in development, which is why the Cards are looking to deal one or more of them. Taveras isn't a great leadoff option.

Tim: Are the Senators still looking to trade Jason Spezza? I know they were looking to move him in the summer annd saw the Blues were interested. I would love to pick him up and it seems like we have the pieces to do it.
Jeff Gordon: Spezza would be a cornerstone center, but I don't know that the Blues really DO have what it takes to make that deal. If I'm Davidson, I re-sign McDonald for a couple of years to allow Berglund to grown into the long-term No. 1 here. He looks more and more capable of assuming that role.

Griff21: What can you tell us about Amury marti(sp?) I know the OF is packed. and Marti's age has been an issue, he could be anywhere from 25 - 40. Haven't seen any stats over the winter but this guy can hit so far every level & assignment , he has hit. do the cards see him as anything more than a minor leaguer? can he play other positions than the outfield, or since hes a righty does that give him a boost?
Jeff Gordon: He IS an older guy. He can hit all day, but he offers neither power or base stealing ability. Had this team had less outfield depth, I suppose he could have stuck at Memphis and eventually come up as an extra bat.

As it is, the Cards have about 10 big league-caliber outfielders stacked up, counting still-developing hitters like Jay, Jones and Wallace.

Griff21: I know its still early and only the first few top FAs have signed. I'm not even saying we need to sign someone tomorrow or even this week. however our #1 priority is still a starter. We have Waino, welly , & lohse & after that a half dozen question marks. I'd like to see a solid #3 starter ( Byrd?) and of course we have to sign an injury riddled player ( penny?). or have you heard we are looking at another player>
Jeff Gordon: The guy I recommended for that slot is Randy Wolf, who would fit in behind Wainwright and Lohse and balance up the rotation.

The FA pitching marketplace will settle down once the Yankees get done signing people. Mozeliak will see where will the real value of mid-rotation pitchers fall.

Griff21: I have long respected & hated randy johnson, mostly because he was a great pitcher , always on the opposite team. now after injuries and free agency do we have a decent shot at landing him? what kinda terms might he garner ? 6-8 a year for 2 years? he might not be the pitcher he once was but hes still a force. just to be able to say we have randy johnson on our team would be a huge moral boost.
Jeff Gordon: I haven't seen a good number on Johnson lately, in terms of his expectations. But I'm sure it's high. He is a lefty with presence, even at this advanced age. With the Cubs out of the Peavy hunt, that team will be a wild card in the free-agent marketplace.

Griff21: why fuentes???????? seriously ?? the guy is good & hes a lefty, ok i'll admit those things. but seriously 10M+ a year. come on, your yanking my chain right?
for 10M we could easily sign Hoffman( who would be more respected and a better teacher to perez& motte) at least one lefty (ohman and/or any of the dozens of others out there) and enough left to help fill the bench ( miles)

Fuentes has no spot on this team, he can close , but we have have perez, motte & a couple young studs advancing in the minors. hes a lefty but there are many others out there for much cheaper.
Jeff Gordon: The remaining FA lefties are just OK, lefty-lefty match-up guys for the sixth, seventh and eighth. Fuentes has four solid years' experience pitching in the ninth. The internal candidates you mention have a combined two months' experience pitching in the ninth.

Brian would make the whole group better by putting other relievers in a position to succeed.

Frank: Gordo-

Our Rams are 2-11. This season is over - has been over for a very long time. Isn't better to rest our older players and give the younger players an opportunity to see and feel the speed of the NFL. Why is Jackson playing? It does not make any sense for us to win any more games. Our superbowl is going to be the draft.....again...

Regards-
Frank
Jeff Gordon: I have no problem with Jackson playing unless he is risking permanent injury. I don't believe that is the case.

I suppose Chamberlain and Vobora could play more, and Greco too. Schuening apparently isn't ready. Otherwise, the kids ARE playing.

Rich: Hey Gordo,

Do you see the Rams signing up anybody before the end of the season or will they wait to see who the next coach/GM are going to be before making any decisions?

On that note, in my opinion the Rams should lock up Bartell before OJ.

OJ has certainly had more highlight reel moments; however, he also cost this team dearly with mistakes in coverage and in the open field.

Bartell has been solid all season which is exactly what the Rams need right now in the secondary.

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Right now, Devaney looks like he'll be the GM. But who will authorize the momentary outlaw and run the payroll budget? Will the current group continue doing that?

I don't like the direction this is taking.

As for Atogwe, he DOES have coverage lapses, as we Sunday. Bartell I'm all in for.

Griff21: any word on Manny ? we NEED him back
Jeff Gordon: We'll see where he is head is (literally) this week.

Entreri10: Hey Jeff,

Okay lets say hypothetically, the rams ownership problems gets solved one way or another if your the new team prez/gm who are your top 3 choices for HC that can turn this team around..(no choosing just one like rex ryan lol) , also who do you think will be coaching this team next year realistically? thanks for your time
-Dennis
Jeff Gordon: Realistically, Ryan is your best option. He is ready to make the jump, he has family ties here and he could command the group.

Steve Spagnuolo will be a popular candidate. Brian Billick seems like a fit for Detroit and Jim Fassel is lobbying for the Oakland job. Marty Schottenheimer would be a natural fit to return to Cleveland, if Cowher is still serious about staying in the broadcast booth.

Ken, a PSL holder from the beginning.: I am totally in disbelief that John Shaw is going to have a role in picking the next coach. If this happens and unless the gods of pure chance smile on the RAMS the only hope to save the franchise for St. Louis is new ownership. Otherwise the RAMS are gone by 2015. This city will not support this incompetence.

The only hope is turn this franchise over to true football managers and get out of their way. John Shaw is incompetent; Zygmut is incompetent.

So what is really going on? Who is in charge? Why after this disastrous season do I even have to ask this question? Rosenbloooms, the Honey moon is over. Make changes or be prepared to sale or move.

I have had enough of this nonsense.
Jeff Gordon: Right now there is a huge vacuum at the top of the organization. And you have to wonder if it will remain there, too, as Chip decides to give Devaney more to do, give the next coach power and NOT install somebody strong at the Shaw/Zygmunt level.

Griff21: so heres my christmas wish list

Randy Johnson
Paul byrd
Trevor Hoffman
Miles
Penny

Fills all our needs. Penny would be a long shot, clement type signing.
Doable? practical?
Jeff Gordon: I'd hate to see Miles leave, needlessly, because the Cards have to pay off the final year of Kennedy's contract. I don't mind Ryan in that role, but still . . .

Hoffman seems like to stay on the West Coast, possibly back with the Padres. Penny would have to sign an incentive-laden one year deal, given his ongoing shoulder issues. Otherwise, let somebody else take that gamble.

Griff21: why is Winchester still on the same team? what upside does he have?
Jeff Gordon: He is a solid fill-in, bringing a pretty robust game. He has fit in pretty well, actually. But it's hard to win with McDonald, Karyia and Oshie out at the same time.

DisCard: If the Yanks sign Sheets or at least another first line starter, do you think they would really give up Hughes for Ankiel? I keep hearing they want the next great Yankee center fielder.
Jeff Gordon: Not sure Ankiel is that, but he is Willie Mays compared to some of the outfielders the Yankees have rolled out to the pasture. And Ankiel-for-pitching deal would make a lot of sense for the Cards.

Given the team's depth in the outfield -- and the price of extending Ankiel's contract for the long haul -- the timing seems right for a trade.

Brett G.: Ok, maybe I'm missing something. Letting Miles (maybe)walk, is LaRussa ready to give Ryan a chance at the main utility role now that Lopez is off the table?...Maybe Barden? Also, with Fuentes coming out saying Anahein would be a great fit, if Cards lose out to him, is Brandon Lyon a possibility? Pen is pretty righty-heavy.... Personally, I'd like to see another lefty or two. That being said, I don't mind seeing Flores and Johnson go.....
Jeff Gordon: I would expect Johnson re-signing a deal that allows him to rehab here and eventually come back. Ryan would have to be the utility guy if Miles moves on. Barden could also be a handy guy, but his bat isn't as good. Ditto with Tyler Greene, who could eventually offer some power in that slot if he gets more disciplined at the plate.

If the Cards don't get Fuenters, Mozeliak better land a lefty with some oomph! to the mix. Enough of the mediocrity.

rich: Jeff: What are the Cardinals doing? I mean really what are they doing? First we're told back in Nov. that they're trying to trade for an impact bat in Matt Holiday, and then they say oh no we don't need that. Then they start in about needing a starting pitcher only to change that story to needing a big name relief pitcher after stating that they weren't really in the market for relief because they have Motte and Perez!!!

Thanks
Rich
Jeff Gordon: The media was more excited about a Ludwick/Holliday deal than the Cards, and fortunately so. That deal made no sense.

The Cards need starting pitching and relief pitching. The team is still shopping for both. After the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Mets and Red Sox get done overspending, then the market will settle.

HEG: Gordo I was viewing the Mizzou basketball game Saturday & I believe they are comparative to the football team this year; they will beat the average or above average teams but will be unable to beat the great teams; me being from S.E. Mo. if Hansbrough had opted to Mo. instead of N.C. Mizzou could have been a great team; but Mizzou was in such dissaray at the time of his signing there was no way he was going to Mizzou even though he had close ties to the university; Re: the baseball Cardinals even the main focus should be on the relief corp I strongly believe the Cards need a lefty starter; Re; the Rams-I will not even bother to comment on them; except to say they will find some way to mess-up their chances for the #2 pick in the draft in the remaining 2 games. Do you agree with any of the comments above?
Jeff Gordon: The Tigers have already beat a ranked team, USC, and they will knock off a couple more before it's over. Lyons and Carroll are good, physically mature forwards having terrific seasons. That gives Mizzou a chance to win 20-plus games. If that lands them in the Top 25, Anderson will take that, for sure.

We agree on the lefty starter thing.

The Rams won't mess up the No. 2 pick in the next two games. They will lose those games going away.

Mike: Gordo,
So Bernie mentioned in his column on Saturday that he wondered if Rush Limbaugh and August Busch IV were consipiring to purchase the Rams... Can the P-D reporters give the fans any more info. on that possibility? Certainly Rush and Busch have the cash to get Rosenbloom's share and it would seem each has a personal interest in getting this done. A Limbaugh/Busch scenario would be the best possible outcome for any STL Rams fan.
Jeff Gordon: I've talked to people close to Rush about this and they say he is very interested. But, like a lot of rich people, I'm sure he took a financial hit in the economic downturn. He would need to build a group and Busch certainly has more cash than he used to.

Between them, they could muster some economic back-up. If they could work with Kronke and keep Stan in the mix, then it's all the better.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

If Fuentes' price is REALLY 3 years/$33 million, wouldn't that money be better spent on an arm, especially if/when bigger names aren't getting what they thought they might? Jon Garland, Randy Johnson, Brad Penny, Oliver Perez and Randy Wolf might be forced to take contracts less than what Fuentes is seeking...and a starter that will throw 200 innings could be as helpful as an "established" closer. We never had that kind of closer contract on the books, and Fuentes isn't half the closer Izzy was from 2002-2007.

It seems that if we truly have $15-16 million to spend, we could have Garland or Wolf AND add Penny on an incentive based deal. I would rather swing a deal for LH relief (Ron Mahay) than to spend our remaining resources in an area we SHOULD have strength (Perez, Motte, McClellan, Kinney). Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: I see your point and adding a guy like Perez would be especially appealing, since he could win 14 to 18 a year in this environment.

But . . . lefty hammers are hard to find. Brian could be both a stopgap closer, for 20 percent more than Izzy got in his prime, then shift to the Last Lefthander role if Perez or Motte seized the closing role. Such pitchers are so hard to find -- overpaying is not that bad of an option.

It beats watching guys like Flores and Villone get hammered week after week after week.

ueaces: Gordo,
Can a two year at 22 mil land Fuentes? Difficult for me to gauge market for him. No way Mo offers him a three year deal.

If no, is Saito a legitimate option?
Jeff Gordon: And Fuentes will get three years. BTW, he is telling people Anaheim is his first choice, since he is a California guy.

fcoprado: Que pasa Gordo, I believe you said that Chip won't hire a strong independent team president. Why?Is it true that John Shaw is going to be involved in the possible next HC search? That's the last thing I want the Rams to do is let Shaw(and Zygmunt)do.Please Chip, we the fans are tired of these two individuals still making decisions.
Jeff Gordon: I believed Chip would do the right thing. But . . . we're getting no indication that will happen. The season is almost over and decisions must be made. And there is still a vacuum at the top of the organization. Shaw is still flexing muscle, it seems.

Sad.

Sam: Gordo,
I read that for the Rams to stay in St. Louis when their contract is up, they need a better stadium. Do you know any details on this? Also, do you see the Rams getting a new stadium in the near future?
Thanks alot
Jeff Gordon: Once the The Edward Jones Dome falls into the pack of NFL stadiums in terms of overall quality (suites, premium seating, video/sound, amenities) -- which is happening -- the Rams will gain an out. Much can be done to upgrade the stadium, but a retractable roof cannot be done. And that is the new state of the art.

I don't see that happening in St. Louis for some time. In fact, it will never happen unless we see some sort of economic revival and big influx of new industry and commerce.

mbess: Do you really think Haslett should be retained? If we do look elsewhere, who is there? Cower isn't coming here and with the mess in the front office and who else would want to. Aren't we basically stuck with Haslett or is Mad Mike on the radar.
Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: NFL coaching jobs are precious. If this one opens up, any number of top assistant coaches would be very interested. As long as Shaw is alive, a Martz return seems unlikely.

mbess: What starting pichers are out there still that the Cards "could" sign at a decent salary? There has to be a decent pitcher out there that hasn't had major surgery in the past 3 years. Your thoughts....
Jeff Gordon: Some of the best options in this market, like Randy Wolf, have had injuries. It's the nature of the business.

Many FAs are still waiting to be signed, topped by Lowe and Perez. Randy Johnson, Ben Sheets, Wolf, Jon Garland, Brad Penny, Paul Byrd . . . some pretty good opportunities are still there.

tatumesque: If Fuentes signs with the Angels or someone else, what do you see as the Cards' next move? Do you see another reliever getting signed (Hoffman, Isringhausen), a legit starter with a healthy track record (Garland, Perez), or a possible one-year flyer on a Brad Penny-type?
Jeff Gordon: The Izzy thing is scary, because he could end up back here as the insurance guy. And then we start that adventure again -- needless walks, 3-1 counts and inherited runners scoring left and right.

If Fuentes doesn't come, I'd put that money (and more) into Perez. But he could become a consolation price for teams missing on Burnett.

jayman: Gordo..who would you keep on the offensive line, and who would you get rid of? Is it possible to build the offensive line strictly through the free agency over the next two years..
Jeff Gordon: Interesting question. Incognito had a tough day against Seattle, not the best defensive front ever. So did Jacob Bell. The organization had high hopes for both. By comparison, Barron is looking like an overachiever suddenly. Pace is near the end, so you have to wonder if he is worth that dollar figure.

Goldberg is an OK fill-in. John Greco has a future. We haven't seen Schuening, so we don't know there.

I dunno . . . the stock on some of these guys changes all the time. One day, dumping Pace's salary to make room for a top draft pick seems like a good idea -- and the next day, it doesn't.

Tackleberry: It seems with every passing week, the anticipation grows that the over-haul of the Rams will be more and more widespread within the organization. Are Rams fans getting overly excited? Is there a threshold of change that you feel Rosenbloom will never surpass? I for one, picture a eutopia where there is no Shaw, Zygmunt, and a new coach and staff. Is that realistic?
Jeff Gordon: Who knows. Chip wants to do the right thing, but I don't know how much independent analysis he will make. Shaw is still in his ear. We might see a stopgap regime limp on while the "For Sale" sign remains planted in the front yard.

boz: What is the issue surrounding the reason why the Cardinals yet to sign a pitcher? Is it MONEY? Is it Availablilty of players wanting to come to St. Louis? There must be some reason why our competition is stepping up their efforts and we are not. I'm starting to think that John Mozeliak just isn't the GM that he was Hyped to be when he came to St. Louis, and Frankly all these concerns are affecting my decision to renew my season ticket package.
Jeff Gordon: Do what you have to do, but upgrading the team is a 365-day process. It never stops. Nor will it stop. The Yankees went crazy in free agency, blowing away Sabathia and Burnett with over-the-top offers, so now other FAs will wait to see where the bar settles.

Mozeliak is still dealing from strength, with money to spend and players to move. Rivals like Milwaukee and Houston are cutting costs and looking to move big pieces from their team.

Mike E. in Chicago: Hi Jeff,
I've got a couple questions for you. I was only able to see the second half of yesterdays game and I was wondering how Long played? I saw he had 3 tackles but besides that how did he look? Also I haven't heard anything from Glen Dorsey this year so have you heard anything on how he is playing? I see that Vernon Gholston is a bust this year and is limited to special teams play so Long has fared better than him but what about Dorsey? Does it look like we made the right decision? Well besides Matt Ryan but who saw that coming?
Jeff Gordon: Talking to KC people, there hasn't been much buzz about Dorsey. He's been OK, but not the game-changer he was hyped to be. So it goes with rookie defensive linemen on bad teams. Put a talented rookie out there with a couple of Pro Bowlers and it's a different story.

Long, too, has been OK. Maybe better than OK, overall. Considering all the other issues around him, that is a pretty good career start.

Hoolie: Gordo

Still waiting for MO to pull the trigger on something significant. First it was wait until the winter meetings, then wait to see who is being offered arbitration, and now it is wait and see what falls off the garbage truck as teams decide to tender or not tender. So far the Cardinals have got a sore armed lefty, a shortstop coming off his poorest season, and have put their most valuable utitlity player in the open market. By the time he makes up his mind, all the players he says he is "interested in" will no longer be available, and the fans will get someone who fell off of the garbage truck. Sound familiar? Is this what Mo calls being aggressive?
Jeff Gordon: The vast majority of the ESPN's top 50 free agents remain unsigned. If all the pitchers get over-the-top offers, then Mozeliak will have to work the trade angle harder.

Don't minimize the addition of Greene. He is a 15- to 20-homer guy replacing a 1-homer guy. That's a nice upgrade on offense with loss of defense.

arnezzi: Can we agree that whoever the Rams pick in the first round must start from Day 1?

If so, is OT such a problem that the Rams are really ready to put Pace or Barron on the sideline, if not on the street before next year?

The franchise needs to sell tickets. Why in the world would it think about drafting Crabtree at WR when it could make a huge PR plus by drafting Jeremy Maclin? Or has Holt's recent rejuvenation made WR less worrisome?

How about a LB?
Jeff Gordon: I would have no trouble drafting an OT and starting him, relegating Barron to a utility role until Pace gets hurt. Or the team could drop Pace's big salary, use the money to sign the top pick and gain spending money to fill other needs in free agency.

Tackles are hard to find and this appears to be a very good draft at that position.

Adam: Hey Gordo. Love your chats.
I think that Mo's favorite word thus far in his tenure as general manager has been "prudent". So, I ask you: would it be prudent to be shopping our outfielders in a market that is flooded with so many, some much better than our own? I understand if someone calls and wants to make a deal for Rick, or Skip, then by all means go for it if the value is there. But, if the Yanks trade for Mike Cameron, no one else needs a centerfielder, (where Rick and even Skip would have most value in a trade). Would it make more sense to let some of the free agents sign and then during spring traning or April try to make a trade? I want another starting pitcher as much as the next guy, but it seems we could get a better one if we wait until the outfield surplus shrinks a little bit. Worst case scenario seems we would have to make Kyle Mac or Boggs start a few, and personally I would love to see Kyle in the rotation.
Jeff Gordon: The Cards won't give away an outfielder just to unclog the position. If they can't move somebody for quality pitching, why bother? If the Yankees would rather have Cameron at $10 million than Ankiel -- a much better player for a fraction of that -- then so be it.

And what would be wrong with starting next year with an outfield of Ludwick, Rasmus and Ankiel, with Schumaker, Duncan and Mather (spare corner infielder, too) on the bench? If the team thins the herd of middle infielders, it could probably keep all six of those guys to start the year.

The Rasmus/Schumaker homer/RBI differential would be significant, like the Greene/Izturis power differential. And Schumaker would be right there if the kid scuffled a bit.

Blues Fan: ESPN is reporting that Fuentes would prefer to stay close to home, making the Angels his first choice. Do you think this puts an end to the Cards' chances. The Angels have as much need for a closer as we do and have much more money (regardless of their pursuit of Tex). Thoughts?

Also, any new rumors to report, it has been several long days of nothing on the Cards' front.
Jeff Gordon: But if Anaheim finds a way to keep Teixeira, then paying top dollar for Fuentes might be tough. So we'll see. All things being equal, why not play in Orange County? That owner in that market will build a powerhouse.

James Sanders: With all the discussions about Kennedy still at Second Base and Miles being cut, what do you think David Freese's chances are of making the team in Spring?
Jeff Gordon: Why promote Freese to have him sit? Ryan could become the utility infielder. Asking Mather to play a lot of 3B may be a stretch. Ditto Ryan. So I'd like to see Mozeliak deal Ryan and re-sign Miles.

Freese would step up if Glaus suffered a major injury.

James Sanders: What are the chances of Freese and Wallace both making the team out of Spring.
Jeff Gordon: Zilch. Both have to play every day. Their time will come in 2010.

David: Gordo - Are there any REALISTIC free agents within the Rams grasp next year that you could see us going after? I'd like to see us get younger on offense through the draft and more veterans defensively, your take?
Jeff Gordon: The list of potential FAs isn't all that exciting, to be honest with you. Teams are pretty smart about keeping their best FAs off the open market. The Rams will be able to get new blood, but Devaney must find several young back-ups looking to make a breakthrough. The established players who do hit the market will likely be older guys looking to land someplace nice.

I look at the impact Craft has had at CB, coming off the street, and I imagine there will be lots of guys like him out there.

Adam: Hey Gordo.
This might seems crazy, but I would like to see us give Mark Mulder an incentive laden deal. His agent said he will be fully ready to go by April. We all know how good he can be, and have all seen how injuries have plagued him these last few years. But, he is one of the few reclaimation projects that has the potential to be a true ace or at least number 2 starter, when healthy. I would just hate to have spent so much money on him and gotten so little, and then see him sign with a team for cheap and return to his old form. I think we should ignore the fact that we wasted so much money on him so far, and look at the opportunity to make a low cost signing with the potential for a high reward. The front office can't be afraid of signing injury risks for ever. If anything use what they have learned so far, sign him but make sure someone else is available so we don't need to "count" on him. By the way, what will his contract look like with whomever signs him? And, if we offer him a contract shouldn't he feel a little bit obligated to accept it for slightly less than someone else given how much we have payed him for so little recently?
Jeff Gordon: He needs a chance of scenery and the Cards need a fresh face. His whole attitude doesn't add much to a team looking to win. Cincy wouold be a great place for him. Nobody would bother him there and he could mount his comeback at his own pace.

West Coast Rams Fan: Jeff,

I live in the San Francisco area and am able to hear and read all the news about both the the Forty-Niners and the Raiders. Both team as you know are in similar situations to the Rams.

I notice the tone of the commets by the St. Louis fans is generally more hateful towards individuals on the Rams team than what I see and hear about both the Radiers and Forty-Niners. Why are the St. Louis fans like this?
West Coast Rams Fan
Jeff Gordon: Watching this team regress from Super Bowl-caliber to laughingstock has brought the worst out of St. Louisans for sure. We're not as mellow as Frisco fans here, but this isn't exactly Philly, either.

B-Ball Fan: So now we hear Fuentes deal is dead and Angels are likely landing spot. Is it really ? Still have all of our surplus OF and extra RH relievers don't we ? Any new trade rumors ? At least the Rams held up their bargain for obtaining the # 2 over all draft pick so some things are good.
Jeff Gordon: That No. 2 pick doesn't overwhelm me. The Rams will get a nice player again, but the team would get a nice player at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 . . . it will still come down to coaching up whoever comes here and putting him in a situation to succeed.

THAT is what fans should focus on.

stlbluespower: We all know that it's pretty bleak on the St. Louis sports scene right now, but I must admit I never get sick of watching this year's version of the Blues. Frustrated at times, yes, but this team seems to keep fighting despite all the bad luck. Do you think they have any chance at all to make the playoffs? If not, what type of players do we target at the top of the draft? I've been hoping that Al MacInnis will take over as head coach someday--do you ever see that happening? He seems a perfect fit for a young team. Thanks for answering and keep up the good work!
Jeff Gordon: I believe Al will keep working for the Blues for some time. But coaching is a 24/7 deal and that would be a big step for him. His current role allows him to help a LOT without being away from his family too much. Down the road, we'll see.

This team needs to add help up front, since Johnson and Pietrangelo will be the long-term offensive defensemen and Polak and Cole could be the bangers for some time. The loss of Stempniak makes it more imperative to draft a scorer, if at all possible.

Ryan: Do you think a Fuentes deal will get done?

If not, do you think we will pursue another closer or look at our other needs?

Latest on rumor of Penny deal being close?
Jeff Gordon: I'd like to be there for the Penny physical, if it gets that far. The Cards need to do thorough CSI investigation on that shoulder.

If Fuentes doesn't fall here, look for the Cards to continue shopping for relief help. They would need a strong lefty and explore late-inning candidates, too, to provide options in case the kids struggle.

You know would prefer having a veteran at the end of games.

MUDelt10: And with the 2nd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select.......?
Jeff Gordon: Andre Smith

Jeepster: Jeff: Care to elaborate on why the Cardinals aren't pursueing a major league secondbaseman this offseason?
Jeff Gordon: Because Adam Kennedy is already there, barring an unexpected turn over events.

Tshow: Gordo,
Everything I am hearing is that Chip is NOT going to hire a president position in the Rams front office? Why? Is he just trying to keep costs as low as possible until he sells?
Devaney will be GM I assume?
A coaching list should be formulated now. Interviews etc. are going to need to start in a little over two weeks! Is Devaney going to do ALL this work? Don't tell me Shaw and Ziggy are going to have ANY part in this?
Rams fans need some sign of a hope and currently I DON'T SEE IT!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: He is the interim owner -- and I guess he prefers an interim management-by-committee approach. Good luck putting a competitive team on the field with that approach.

john: Can't wait for baseball...again!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed!

Manny: Gordo:

If the Redbirds don't go after Fuentes because of the years involved, why not a bridge arrangement with Hoffman for one year to get Perez and Motte another year's seasoning? Do you think this is being considered by the organization?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: It's possible, but prying Hoffman away from the West Coast at this point of his career would be tough. If they are going to bring back a heritage closer, Izzy (gulp) might make more sense.

Brian: You know its one thing for the Yankees to sign the top free agents year after year, but by they are creating a monopoly that only them, Boston and the LA teams can afford. So who next year will seek a 200 million dollar contract to one up Sabathia? The Cardinals will never be able to get a top tier free agent again. Because if any of those teams want the same player as the Cardinals you better believe they are going to give whatever it takes.

Really pathetic and discouraging.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but the Tampa Bay Rays won a pennant with home-grown players and the Phillies won it all with a home-grown nucleus. The Yankees' model hasn't worked so well lately.

Brian: What are your thoughts on Mizzou hiring Yost as the offense coordinator vs. a bigger name candidate? All I know about the guy is that he hasn't gotten a hair cut in about 4-years.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, he'll need a trim to get a head-coaching gig. I'm a little concerned about the offense, which got predictable (as much as a spread can be) and much easier to defend last year. Can a guy from the same staff step up and mix things up? We'll see. Pinkel is not big om bringing in fresh blood.

Adam: Gordo,

Since most of your forums revolve around what the Cardinals and Rams are doing, I wanted to ask a question about the Blues. I live out of the St. Louis area. I watch almost all of the Blue's games on Center Ice. I find that they are one of the hardest working teams in proffessional sports. Does the St. Louis community recognize this, or are they too wrapped up in the Cardinals going after second tier free agents and the atrocity that is the Rams organ-I-zation (for the hockey fans)?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues are getting some attention, but they need to get healthy to put together a winning streak at some point. At the current prices, .500 hockey year after year becomes a tough sell.

Edward Leonard Phunt: Gordo,

Blowing the 5-3 power play killed the Blues in the game vs San Jose. It seems like the players double clutch the puck a lot on the power play, is this a part of Murray's Scheme?

Mason has logged a lot of good minutes recently(tough minutes), however, do you think he is better than Legace?

Paul Kariya is still out.....at this point it seems like he would have been back by now if they would have replaced his body with bionics, is KAriya secretly dying in an African prison while waiting for Jack Bauer to rescue him?
Jeff Gordon: Kariya is actually making progress now. He, Oshie and McDonald's return could finally be on the horizon.

Mason hasn't proven he is better than Legace, but he is sure better than Toivonen.

As for the PP, it is missing Stempniak, McDonald and Kariya. Those guys were moving the puck and shooting the puck with confidence.

Kolchak: Thanks for taking my question Gordo. I've got a two part question for you. Who do you think will be the next signing by the Cardinals ? Also who do you think would be a nice pick for next coach of the Rams other than Haslett ?
Jeff Gordon: Rex Ryan should be the next coach. As for the Cards, I still expect a pitcher to fall to them next. But first the Yankees have to get done buying everybody.

Tank: Hey Gordo, Do you know why Ben Bishop as yet to put anything on his helmet? Is that the helmet he wears in peoria?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure what he wears in Peoria, but he'll get a flashy mask when he gets established at this level.

Kolchak: Thanks for taking my question Gordo I enjoy reading your work. How serious is this talk of a Busch/Limbaugh partnership being interested in buying the Rams ?
Jeff Gordon: Right now, it's just speculative. This story will play out over a LONG time.

Kolchak: Thanks for taking my question Gordo. Do you hear any interest on the Cards part with Takashi Saito ?
Jeff Gordon: Given the condition of his arm, that would be very risky. That is why he is on the market.

dave cobler: Heeeey Gordo;

It appears that if the Angels offer Fuentes a contract he will be an Angel...no pun intended. If that is the hand that is dealt to the Cards who would you like to see them pursue and who do you think they will pursue for the closers role? If that guy comes via a trade, who on the current Cardinals roster might be included in a trade to make the deal happen?

Thanks a bunch Jeff!
Jeff Gordon: Assuming that Hoffman won't leave the West Coast, then I would focus on landing a second lefty of some stature and spending the money on a starting pitcher instead. That would keep McClellan in the bullpen. Maybe invite a veteran like Izzy in to provide insurance, if that's what we're down to.

JonnyG: I'm not one to typically go off the deep-end on trades and player acquisition ideas, but I'm going to right here. Buckle up, here comes a wild one for ya.

What about the idea of trading off a package containing Ludwick, Schumaker, & a AAA pitcher (ie..Walters) for a solid young-ish starter. Then label Perez the Closer, he handled himself pretty well last year. Now he's been there and should be able to build off the experience. Finally.....here it comes.....Take all of the money that is being looked at for Fuentes add, a good amount more, plus a few extra years and sign Manny Ramirez.

Told you it was going off the deep-end, but it would make TLR happy and it would address the more serious need in the rotation. Due to the annual uncertainty of Carp's health. I don't feel the Closer role is as bad as remembering last years makes it. Izzy & Franklin both are out of that role, and Perez is ready to take over. We don't need to spend the money on Fuentes, whenever we have a viable option in Perez. We do still need more lefty relief, but not at the price or role of Fuentes.
Jeff Gordon: Manny has turned down about $7 million more per year than Albert makes. He can't play D, he's a flake . . . no, he's not coming here.

redbirdswin: How do you see the bench shaping up next year for the Cards - LaRue, Miles, Duncan, Mather, Freese - fair guess?
Jeff Gordon: LaRue, Duncan, Mather -- yes, barring deals. Maybe Ryan, maybe Barden or T. Greene on the infield. Schumaker in the OF, behind Rasmus, unless he is moved.

lynyrd: Gordo, My question concerns Jay Zygmunt. Maybe I'm missing something here but isn't he considered one of the NFL's best contract negotiators and salary cap managers? Where Jay Z. gets himself and the team in trouble is by meddling in the teams personnel decisions.

If this scenario is correct, then why throw the baby out with the bathwater out of frustration? What I mean is (and I know this is not going to be a popular suggestion and probably won't happen anyway) why not strictly limit Zygmunt to what he does well and let him have NO SAY whatsoever in personnel decisions?

It's my understanding that people who truly understand all the complexities and nuances of salary cap management and negotiation don't exactly grow on trees. Therefore, why get rid of Jay Z. when you can just limit him to his area of expertise? Now if he isn't willing to go along with that then yeah, I say good riddance, but if he's willing to play ball then I say keep him on.

What say ye Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: Trouble is, when you make a call on the cap -- whether to spend or not -- you make a football decision, too. And he would have a hard time butting out of that decision.

redbirdswin: Gordo,

You've advocated the Cards looking at Brian Fuentes as far back as I can remember - so where do the parties stand at the moment? Will another team pay up to the tune of $10+ million per year or will the Cards get him at a decent price in the end?
Jeff Gordon: If the Angels really want him, they will get them. They will probably spend $50 million more on payroll than the Cards this season. If the Angels pass, maybe something can happen.

David: Hey Gordo,

I'll spare you the Fuentes questions since I know they'll be coming in by the tons today.

Is there any system of check and balances or accountability on awards voting, such as MVP or Heisman? It seems ridiculous that a large number of sports writers in a certain geographic area can all leave Tebow off their Heisman ballot. I think Bradford deserved to win it, but Tebow was definitely a top 3 guy.

Blagojevich is a Cubs fan, right?
Jeff Gordon: The SEC bloc voted for Tim, a deserving finalist, and the Big 12 bloc tried to load up all the Big 12 South guys. There is much goofiness in the Heisman voting, yes.

Chris: It's already been a roller coaster of a seaon for our Bluenote. Injuries and inconsistant play have hampered the chances of a long win streak, but the Blues are in a decent position only a few points of the play-off pace. With people getting healthy, strong goaltending and young talented forwards, do you see a decent stretch on the horizon to give us fans hope for the post-season?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, it can happen. A lot of Western Conference teams have had issues this season, so the Blues are still alive. If they can get their offense back together for a new year, there will be time to make a run.

Chris: What are the realistic odds of the Cards signing Fuentes? ... or Randy Wolf?
Jeff Gordon: The odds on Fuentes seem to be worsening, due to Anaheim's interest. Wolf I'd love to get, but perhaps the Cubs will suddenly be compelled to overspend now that the Peavy thing died.

Jeepster: Jeff: Bernie M recently stated that he would give Mozeliak until the offseason ended beore passing judgement on him. Will you do the same and do you feel they can still address the problem at the secondbase and closer spots in timeas well as possibly adding another reliable starter before spring training?
Jeff Gordon: This thing could go all the way to April, if Mo can't deal from his surplus to find some additional starting and relief pitching. So I'm not panicking. He is still dealing from strength.

Matt: Gordo,

Do you have any insight as to whether the Cards are actually trying to negotiate with Fuentes or if we're just getting the PR spin from the front office?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards have offered lots of money, according to several third-party sources. But Anaheim will also spend more.

Ed C: Gordo,

My question is since our last 2 top draft picks might fit better in a 3-4. Long at OLB and Carricker at DE why not switch now. There may be a learning curve. I know we will need some other players to make a 3-4 work, specifically NT and bigger LBs. Of course Long would be one of the bigger LB (Miami said they were considering C Long with first pick for 3-4 LB posiion). So, if Haslett stays or we find someone new the 3-4 should be give serious consideration. Switch to the 3-4 and draft the best available defensive player, either NT, LB or safety. I believe the Rams are not that many players short of having a very good defense, if we can resign Otogwe and Bartell. Mauluga from USC fits the bill at LB in the 3-4 or MLB in the 4-3 defense. If a top 5 pick is too high, trade down. If we don't switch to the 3-4 we still need a MLB and a penetrating DT tackle in the mold of L Glover to make the 4-3 effective. You can build a great offensive without top 5 draft picks (Giants and Steelers for example). Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Haslett/Venturi used a lot of 3-4 Sunday and then blitzed from different angles. To do more of that, they will have to get a lot better at LB. Not sure if Long is a stand-up guy, but that would help make the change.

handsome jimmy: Hey Gordo,

I honestly don't know if I'll re-up my season tickets to support this joke of a football team. I just think that my entertainment budget would be better spent elsewhere. Times are hard and I see no reason to spend huge sums of my entainment dollars where I'll later regret. I wonder if more fans will have to make this same decision concerning their budgets in this upcoming season.
Jeff Gordon: Can't blame you, dude . . .

RealityCheck: Good afternoon Jeff. I know you dont like Ankiel based upon your strong desire to see him traded, but please explain your willingness to trade such an important hitter for a middle of the road reliever. It makes absolutely no sense to me since it would leave the outfield in a dangerously weak state. Trusting Rasmus, Schumaker and Duncan out there would be foolish. The thought of not wanting a lot of lefty outfielders doesnt fly because the team will still have only 3 lefty hitters, which hardly leaves leaning lefty overall. Also making this trade all the while the team claims it needs another impact bat, how does trading one solve that problem? Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: You would need helpful pitching in exchange for a good hitter, true. But we're assuming Rasmus makes the jump and becomes an impact bat. Or that Duncan come back and hits homers. Or Mather keeps developing. Or Wallace arrives. If they all failed, then, yeah, moving Ankiel would really cause damage.

TTT: Your opinion on Izzy: If the Cards bring him in with a highly incentivized contract, I'm thinking he would be valuable to have around as a mentor for Perez and Motte. Would he be inclined to take on such a role if they are taking away his ability to earn more $$?
Jeff Gordon: He would have to accept a middle relief role IF he failed to secure the closer's gig. It's a fallback, but he is a great competitor and a great teammate.

Martin: Considering the play of some of the young talent that has come up and filled in nicely how much better to this point do you think the Blues would have been without all of the injuries?
Jeff Gordon: The Blues could be several games over .500, for sure.

Rodster: Hey Gordo -- At what point can Blues fans start complaining about product on ice. I know they are young and the "new" regime is preaching patience but how long do we have to wait. Is this the 5 or 10 year plan? To me I still see no improvement from 2-3 years ago, a team that will be at least 10-15 points out of the playoff picture.
Jeff Gordon: John Davidson got a pretty good product together . . . and then a bunch of key guys got hurt at once. Otherwise, this is a good product.

tws6254: Do you have any insight on specific hard-line contract issues currently being negotiated between Brian Fuentes and the Cardinals that are likely to kill the deal (for either side)? Thanks, Tom
Jeff Gordon: Dollars! The difference between $8 million or $9 million a year and $11 million starts to weigh on a GM.

music4585: Gordo - I hope you can help me understand something. Why do the Cardinals continue to yo-yo every year with Aaron Miles? Why don't they just resign him? I don't think we can find another infield sub that hits .300. Seems a little weird to me. Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed. Pay the man, let him back up all three INF slots and bat 300 times.

David: Why is no one demanding that the Cardinals Organization live up to their word? They wanted a new stadium so that the organization could be more competitive yet they send less money on good players every year. They lied about Ball Park Village. Now we will have a giant hole in the spot where Ball Park Village should be for the upcoming All Star game. Why is no one holding this group of owners to their word? Why is no else mad about them pimping STL?
Jeff Gordon: They got the new ballpark and won a World Championship. Is that what you mean by "more competitive"?

gumba: Good afternoon Jeff! I was wondering what your take was on the Cardinals letting Aaron Miles go? Do you think that it is time that the Rams start looking for a veteran head caoch who has some age on him? The age thing is to do with a respect factor and not letting these young guys run over a young coach?
Jeff Gordon: There are some older coaches who are weak, too. Not sure Wade Phillips has command of that team, for instance.

Agreed on Miles.

jason metcalf: Why havent we locked up fuentes? I know its a economics game and im not saying hes the best but we need help in closer role and the left sid its like a two for one deal till motte and perez develop fully.Just think if we would have had half the blown saves back we would have made the playoffs!!!! I dont get it!!!
Jeff Gordon: Neither to do I.

cardsramstigers4life: I've been under a rock (studying for finals) and I havn't heard any tangible names for coaches who could replace Jim Haslett, who do you think heads the list and how soon will we know Jim's fate?
Jeff Gordon: Rex Ryan is my choice. Plenty of coordinators looking to step up.

You probably won't know about Jim until postseason meetings.

cardsramstigers4life: John Mo's honeymoon period obviously is over. Is he on the hot seat if the cards are unable to address some key needs and the Cubs and Brewers (and always keep an I out for those Astros) keep seperating themselves from the Birds this off season, or am I being a bit premature?
Jeff Gordon: The Brewers have lost Sabathia to free agency, put Mike Cameron the trade block and let Sheets solicit offers. How, exactly, is that team getting better?

The Cubs let their closer walk and hoped for the best. Maybe they will be better, maybe not.

Jason: Jeff,
This is more of an evaluation of the fans...
There seems to be a more hysterical, boisterous fan base with regards to the Cardinals and demands/expectations for more talent, top flight FAs. Is this selective memory on my part? It sure seems like the fan base reacts much more quickly and intensely than in the past. As much as I'd like to complain about the lack of recruitment of top flight "talent", the Cardinals did just win the World Series 2 years ago, and had a great run 2000-2006 (plus 1996). I'm frustrated, too, but how much can people complain? I mean, this isn't the Cubs, it's not even Pittsburg (they should REALLY be complaining!)
Jeff Gordon: Fans forget the team is paying huge dollars to Carpenter, Glaus, Pujols, Lohse and decent money to Greene, Wainwright and Molina . . . but whatever, they also believe other teams never let players walk.

akeman: In regards to the Blues, how does management view other columnists labeling the Blues as "cellar dwellers" and how can they change that THIS season?

Respectfully,

Leatherneck in the rafters
Jeff Gordon: I look at what "power" teams like Dallas and Colorado are doing this season and I see lots of hope for postseason in the not so distant future.

Rick: Really, what do the Yankees have to offer for Ankiel other then Kennedy?
Jeff Gordon: There is a 40-man roster and a whole organizational chart to pick through, if it comes to that.

Michael Summerville: Once again it is the off season again the Cardinal management is all talk and NO action. What are the plans to find a reliever? Quit taking advantage of faithful Cardinal fans and reward them by building a good team. That means jumping off your over loaded wallets and spend that money on the team!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Again, most of the top free agents are still unsigned the season doesn't start to April.

moboater: It looks like the week in Vegas was a free lounge by the pool vacation paid for by the cardinal fans!!!!
Jeff Gordon: That's right, there was no groundwork put in place for trades or signings during the months ahead. Nope, nothing. And so many other teams were busy. Loved that HUGE Cubs-Padres deal. That was great.

Dan: Gordo,

Although Steven Jackson is not my favorite Rams, can you please tell me why the Rams stop going to him in the second half? He was playing great. I was scratching my head with some of the play calling in the second half. I sometimes think Al Saunders wants to be cute with his play calling.
Jeff Gordon: To use Jackson, you have to run block and sustain drives. If you're not on the field, it's hard to pound with the big RB.

Rick: After watching last years performance the bullpen has to have its closer. Isnt it true the Cardinals really have no choice but to offer Fuentes what he wants? The offense looks good, and starting pitching just needs some backup, why not solidify this team with a soild closer. Also when was the last dominate lefty closer we've had?
Jeff Gordon: Fuentes is a sure-fire closer, but he is a lefty hammer. You're right -- when was the last time the Cards had a guy like that?

Chris: Hey Gordo, I think with all of the injuries the Blues have had this
year, Andy Murray's job is safe, but I was wondering if the Blues have
considered bringing back Brian Sutter as head coach? Any idea what
Sutter is up to these days?
Jeff Gordon: Brian is in the cattle business, working hard. But if the Blues need another coach, there are more current, offensive-minded coaches that would be in play.

Chaz: First Round- Tim Tebow
Second Round - Mr. Macklin

I would start watching the Rams again.
Jeff Gordon: Maclin wouldn't last to the second round. And Tebow seems headed back to college.

So . . .

kdw005: If you could have any blues player back who has been traded away in the last year or so, who would it be and why?
Jeff Gordon: Bryce Salvador -- he is steadier than most of the veteran Blues "D."

dick stephens: I've been watching the Rams since 1958 and decided yesterday to do yesterday what I did in the early 60's when the Rams were so bad. Went golfing and had a great day. I refuse to watch this team again until they have a new president, GM, head coach and qauterback. Could be next year maybe not. That's my plan.
Jeff Gordon: Can't blame you man.

Karvon7: Im no rocket science but why don't the Rams do a "Hershel Walker" trade. That way that can trade Stephen Jacksons and secure some draft picks for the next 7 or eights years from now. Jimmy Johnson set a precedent with that trade. After the trade, they had became a dynasty in the mid 90's while placing the guy that they traded for "Emmitt Smith" in the hall of fame at the same time.
Jeff Gordon: Why would another team make that deal?

Chris Givens: With so many young OF on staff, do you see the team locking anyone to a long term deal?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards control Ludwick for three years, so the club has leverage to get him under contract for reasonable dough. Ankiel is a FA in a year, so he could be out the door. Extending him would cost lots. The time to do that may have been last season.

Steve: If Toronto really needs to trade Halladay for money reasons just how many cheap prospects will they want, and would he be worth it to the cards?
Jeff Gordon: It would worth the world for Cards.

Rick: I get that the Yankees have the players to make the trade for Ankiel, but what are the chances they offer something that the Picky Birds would take?
Jeff Gordon: Well, we'll see. The Yankees have made some big mistakes in recent years, which is why they haven't won the big prize in a while.

Tim Dunigan: I attended the Blues / Kings game last Thurs. night in Los Angeles. The Kings totally outplayed the Blues in every area of the game. I have to think that the head coach's job is somewhat in jeopordy? I realize that they had played the night before in Anahiem, and were a little tired, but they just looked like they had NO answers on how to stop the Kings offense at all. What do you think? Is a coaching change a possibility for the Blues at this point?
Jeff Gordon: That is premature. The team has held up well despite all the injuries. The last homestand was encouraging.

eddie c: How could you sit there and think that if Mark Bulger had more time and an "improved Offensive line", after a miraculous draft of several good/ great offensive linemen, that he is gonna be any less of a loser than he is now. He may be a nice guy, but he's only gonna perform when his job is on the line. That only happens when you have a legitimate starter on the bench. Hence you gotta draft a QB in the first or second round, to replace him. Why do you think he played well in 2003 (Warner was on the bench) and in 2006 (last year of contract). He isn't in his last year of a contract any more, so you need to draft a QB, high. AM gonna keep saying this until you understand the importance of drafting a QB in the first 2 rounds, reagrdless of what Bulger makes.
Jeff Gordon: I'd rather see the team add a viable veteran, ready to play right away, and then draft a developmental QB . Cover the short term and long term.

cardswin17: Hey Gordo,
A lot of mock draft boards have tight ends being drafted before Missouri's Chase Coffman, despite being named the top tight end in the college game. Why do you think the scouts believe he won't project at the next level?
Jeff Gordon: Coffman doesn't line up next to the tackle and block, so teams don't know if he can do that.

Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,

I have to say, as a Yankee fan, I'm a little worred about who the Yanks are spending all that moola on. Neither Sabathia or Burnett has ever played in a market where the fans really care and I'm thinking they've never heard booing from their own fans before. Not that the Yanks don't have it to spend, but I think time has shown over and over again that not everyone is meant to play in the Big Apple. You need to have thick skin and a short memory. I think the Yanks would have been better served to go after a guy like Lowe, who has pitched in Boston and been part of the Yanks/Sox rivalry. Now, I hear they want to get in on the Texeria/Manny talks and I'm really hoping they don't. Have they forgotten how they won in the 90s?
Jeff Gordon: Sabathia hasn't done it in the postseason and Burnett hasn't been consistent, period.

STLMU2006: What are your thoughts on MU basketball? Think they might be a sleeper come Big 12 play?
Jeff Gordon: With two mature big men playing very well, they have a chance to win more than they lose in conference. Ask Xavier and USC -- teams will have to play well to beat the Tigers.

Rick: I see alot of things wrong with our football team, but the one thing i see the most is the poor quarterback play. The Rams have to either trade for a second 1st round draft pick or a second 2nd rounder and pick a QB I like Bradford if he goes pro, but i wouldn't take him first over all so the chance of him being around are small. I don't like Staffrd enought to take him in the first round either, even with his make and arm strength. So do the Rams go OL, then QB or what?
Jeff Gordon: O-Line, then the best available player -- the Rams need everything.

cracengl: It looks like the lunatics are out in full force today. Mo on the hot seat? Is that guy serious? Maybe they should just take out a 2nd mortgage on Busch Stadium so payroll can escalate up to about 500 million. That ought to shut 1 or two people up.
Jeff Gordon: Mo will be here a while because he is executing DeWitt's vision. And that is a long-term vision.

Rick: I like the Cardinals going into 09 even if Johnny Mo doesn't land the talent we need to compete with the Cubs if maybe the final LaRussa years. I don't see us getting embarrassed but I do see a repeat of last year. Closer, Closer, Closer, and i cant say Closer enough to express how we need a Closer. We really would have been in the playoffs if we had a Closer in 08, but i guess my point is if there is one thing they need if nothing else its a Closer, and get him now.
Jeff Gordon: Had they had Perez, Motte and Kinney throwing all year like they threw at the end, then they might have made the playoffs.

Chris: Would Ben Sheets be a pitcher the Cards would be looking at? If so, what would it take to get him?
Jeff Gordon: His injury history makes him a tough bet at $14 million to $16 million a year.

Jeepster: Jeff: You previously mentioned Milwaukee and Houston were cutting payroll. I was wondering what the Cardinal payroll is currently at and why aren't you including the Cards in as also "cutting payroll"? Do you honestly anticipate the Cards payroll over 100 million this season?
Jeff Gordon: It doesn't matter what it is right now, but here is what some guys are making:

Albert: $16 million.
Carpenter: $14 million
Glaus: $11.25 million.
Pineiro: $7.5 million
Lohse: $7.125 million
Greene: $6.5 million
Kennedy: $4 million
Wainwright: $2.6 million.
Franklin: $2.5 million.
Miller $2 million.
Molina:$1.75 million.

Ankiel, Wellemeyer and Ludwick ought to cash in big as well this winter. And, yes, the Cards are still looking to spend on FAs.

So let's see if the team gets to $100 million or not by the end of the spring.

Griff21: What ever happened to Thompson? in all the discussions of the pitchers his name never pops up in the rotation, & he receives no mention in the bullpen. with the players we have is it possible/ likely that he would get traded or start the season in AAA?
Jeff Gordon: La Russa still considers him valuable, both as a long reliever and an emergency starter. He is a tweener -- and he could move on if the team adds bullpen and rotation help.

Chris: Any word on Brendan Shanahan? I thought I read somewhere that his only option now would be to play for the Blues. Is it possible he may just decide to retire instead?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, he could retire rather than play outside of the northeast.

stlbluespower: What is the one thing--if any--that will get the Blues into the playoffs? Would you say it is consistent scoring or goaltending? And, do you think Mason is number one next year with Bishop as the backup?
Jeff Gordon: Bishop could be the guy next year. We'll see. To make these playoffs, the Blues need to nail down their even-strength defensive play first and foremost. That makes everything else easier.

Marshall Faulk: Hey Jeff, How long before I join the Rams front office and turn things around?
Jeff Gordon: Ready to work 24/7 for the next 12 months solid? That is what it will take. I do think Marshall will end up in a front office some day. Smart guy.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

I can't help but notice that the Cards should have roughly $35-40 million coming off the books after 2009, which makes a Fuentes signing a little less scary and may put us in the running for that "big bat" and durable, proven starter.

Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: Correct - I would worry less about Brian's third year know that the team will have cheap players like Rasmus, Wallace, Freese and Mortensen assuming big roles.

That appears to be it for today -- thanks for all the great questions and comments!
