9elbirdos: Gordo,

I was looking at the Cardinal's minor league system we have no 1b. In the system if Pujols gets hurt. What happens if that should happen i.e. his (elbow) we have Duncan and Mather. Are you kiddin me!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: And Brett Wallace, who is the best pure hitting prospect in the system. He will play some third base and outfield next season, but it's easy to see first base as his natural position.

DisCard: As I see the Fuentes thing, it makes no sense to bid against yourself, regardless of how bad the need is. I’m not certain he signs now even if he were offered his $33 million. Once you put the price out there it’s hard to come down.

The significant question is whether the Cards sign him when the bidding gets real world. I think Big Tex ends up back with the Angels and it seems they won’t pay the $33 million once that deal goes down. The Brewers might make a pitch to save face with their fans. Aside from that the Cards should control the auction. What does your experience tell you? Will they pay the price to sign Fuentes or will the in-season pronouncements just end up as empty rhetoric?
Jeff Gordon: If the Angels are really out of the Teixeira Sweepstakes -- and if they are not just yanking Scott Boras' chain -- then Anaheim will have the dough to win the Fuentes bidding. Brian has said Anaheim is his first choice, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this deal go down sooner than later.

donsods: Jeff--For the second week, the Rams have used a "Wildcat" formation. Post-Dispatch articles put it on italics, but don't explain what it is. Since the Rams are never on TV anymore, could you please explain to us what a "Wildcat" formation actually is?
Jeff Gordon: The quarterback lines up as a receiver and the running back takes the direct snap. Typically the Rams run out of this formation with Jackson, but he has handed the ball to Dane Looker on an end around -- and then Looker has thrown the ball to Bulger.

Good times!

ramfanoncapecod: hi jeff all i have to say was 4th and 3 and bulger throws it deep why cant we play the clock once in a while?
Jeff Gordon: They tried that, too, in the second half -- and their ground game got stuffed. In the end, whatever Al Saunders called didn't work.

DBQIA: If you needed a tight end, would you draft Coffman. I have heard him compared to Klop, a big wide receiver that will never be a very good blocker.
Jeff Gordon: He has blocked pretty good in space, which is how Mizzou uses the tight end. Coffman will be an explosive weapon in the passing game for whatever team he goes to.

Don't compare him to the Klop. Don't do that to the kid.

Rich: Hey Gordo,

Do you see Rams using the franchise tag on either Bartell or Atogwe?

I realize such a move would eat up more than a little cap space; however, that may be the only way both are in Rams uniform next year.

Thanks for these chats.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, O.J. figures to draw a lot of interest. He has coverage flaws and he takes some bad tackling angles, but he is a playmaker. That may be the only way to keep him.

Bartell will cash in one way or another. The Rams can't afford to lose him.

handsome jimmy: Hey Jeff,

To hell with the Rams as they are no longer relevant or worthy of discussion.

My question is what about the Rams cheerleaders? Yea, they are the only ones worthy of discussion. The last two home games, there are no longer four squads of beauties that rotate each quarter. Now there are only two squads of cheerleaders. This has caused much concern in my section (449) of the dome. We are getting screwed with our cheerleader face time and this is worse than watching the Rams flail away at a 1-7 home record. What is up with this?
Jeff Gordon: This sounds outrageous. Maybe the P-D will investigate this matter.

mizzourah1986: Can you actually believe after week 7, when we beat the Cowboys and went to 2-4, we were actually talking playoffs?? PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS? Hell we're just trying to win a game!! I would NEVER have dreamed after that cowboy game we would lose EVERY game! The only reason the Lions will go winless is they don't play the Rams. I still think the Rams are the worst team. The Lions and Rams should play the toilet bowl game this year...somewhere in a cow pasture....
Jeff Gordon: The Lions made the argument Sunday that they are even worse, but generally that team has competed. And this team played in the league's worst division.

Exorcist wanted: The Rams need an Exorcism performed. It is the only explanation for what has happen. First we didn't compete. Then we all of sudden won 2 games. Then we get blown out. Next we got competitive but lose the games at the very end. What's next: we go into the 4th quarter with a 3 TD lead, only to lose in overtime by an obvious bad call by an elderly referee who tackles our receiver, forces a fumble and throws a flag for Personal foul for interfering with refe's official duties.

How is the exorcism to be done:

First things first. Shaw and Zygmut must be fired and too a certain extent publicly humiliated. A high Tech lynching will do at a news conference hosted by Rosnbloom.

Second we let Devaney pick a new coach without interference of the media or fan base. What does the media or fans know about selecting football Coaches? Nothing. Just look at all the lovely columns when Linehan was hired. You guys were slobbering all over Linehan and Shaw. You have no idea what you are talking about. The average fan is worse.

Third we pull our money (Every season ticket holder sells a game ticket to raise the money; WE should get a few dollars). With the money we raise we get a used barbecue grill to hold ritual sacrifices of Lambs (flamed broiled and marinated in a thick hot sauce. We serve this to the opposing side during half time under the guise as energy food.

Finally we hire mad mike not as a coach but as team president in charge of Anti-drafting. What ever Mike wants to do we do the opposite.
This has possibilities.

You pundits could even sit around and murmur over and over: I told you so; I told you so.

Or we could just hope the team is sold ASAP
Jeff Gordon: A quick sale to a strong new owner would be ideal, but it doesn't appear that will happen.

Some of your other ideas are interesting. Mike Martz in charge of anti-drafting? I like that one.

Last Fan to leave the dome and lectures from Issac: Will the last fan to leave the dome turn off the lights.
There is a recession on you know!

Dear Issac; Thanks for the Lecture about how we owe you millionaires an obligation to support The awful RAMS in these bad economic times. Regardless how bad the team plays you believe it is the obligation of the RAM fans to attend and spend money to support the players life style, no matter how bad they play. I know you were good player while you were in St. Louis. A true RAM team player. A leader, a hard worker, maybe a hall of famer.

But why did you (Issac) not take the RAMS last offer and finish out your career as a RAM? You have made millions off the RAMS and St. louis. That's right you had an offer that paid 2 million per year for two years and could have stayed with RAMS but you left to play with your arch rival for the last years of your career. Linehan was no good but he was gone after the 4th game. What a character move. Now that's leadership!

And now we get lecture from you. Pathetic

PS: Congratutlations on making your 1000th catch against the RAMS. See you in the playoffs with the RAMS. Was it really worth it? I forgot you need the money, especially with the recession on. How much more did you make? I hope you enjoy it along with the rest of your millions.
Jeff Gordon: Ouch!

Michael Kent: Jeff ...

Most Cards fans would believe that Colby Rasmus is the best bet of all the minor league prospects to make the 25-man roster on Opening Day 2009. Or is he?

Who would you consider to be the "darkhorse" candidate(s) to make the team this spring? I'm talking about players who have yet to be on the active roster (i.e., those who were September callups last season don't count).

Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: For a darkhorse, perhaps one of the pitchers we haven't seen yet -- Jess Todd, who was great last year, or Clayton Mortensen, who was not. That kid looked good in the spring and was positioned to get a call-up . . . until he struggled at Memphis. But he still has good stuff and he is on the radar.

Right now, the team is overloaded with outfielders and third baeemen. There is no room for breakthroughs there. Maybe Brian Barden gets the nod to replace Aaron Miles in the infield, since the team will need a guy who can play third base when Glaus needs a break. (Ryan seems a little shaky over there and Freese needs to get his ABs at Memphis this year.)

Tim: How would you like this for starting Oline next year

Andre Smith LT( stud rookie that will anchor the line for years to come)
Jacob Bell LG ( I wont give up on him, he is playing subpar this year with a playing weight around 280. Get some solid weight and muscle mass on him this offseason and I would bet he would be the same guy that played for the Titans)
Incognito C ( Im actually a fan of him. he plays with heart and intensity and hated to lose If he can just got a good coach to calm him down, dicipline him, and relize his full potential Hed be great
Grecco RG( Great intensitly and strength, Should be a cornerstone on the Rams line for many years)
Jordan Gross( I think would be a solid signing for the Rams)

Would you like that line opening day?
Jeff Gordon: Smith is a great line prospect, but his body type (really fat) makes him better suited for right tackle or even guard. As for signing a starting-caliber FA tackle, good luck with that. Those guys are scarce and they can pick better locales than this one.

Tim: What direction do you think the Rams will go in head coaching position? If I were Them I would go either Spagnola or Rex Ryan. Both of thema are smart, fiery tempered and diciplined coaches that would turn this team around. Plus, who would be the perfect guy to give Incognito a kick in the butt other than the guy who has a grudge against him for the way he played "Rex Ryan"
Jeff Gordon: The Ravens didn't think much of Richie, so it would be interesting to see what happened if Rex did get the call.

Whatever the Rams do, they need to hire a head coach with some attitude and go as far from the Linehan style as possible.

Tim: Do you thimk the Rams will spend money on their D LINE this offseason?
Obviously Long is there next year I Think Carriker just needs an offseason to recuperate from injuries and get helathy again and he should be back to his rookie form. Clifton Ryan will be there byt other than that its wide open. If im the Rams I would which Doubt will happen but if Albert Haynesworth hits free agency we should throw stupid money at him and build our D around him. Then if Im correct Julius Peppers is a free agent so Id work real hard to try to sign him whick would leave us with Long Haynesworth Carriker Peppers on front four. Not bad to me what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Good luck signing impact D-linemen as free agents. They usually don't hit the market -- and if they do, they go to the better teams.

I'd go to a 3-4 D, use Long, Carriker and Adeyanju at the ends and fird somebody bigger than Ryan to play the nose. Then the team would have to find a couple of tough inside linebackers.

Tim: Is there anyone big on free agent wide recievers in free agency this year? Holt is likley gone so that leaves us with Avery Burton and Stanley. Id like to see them add a veteran reciever that can produce and teach the kids to play the game.
Jeff Gordon: Looker runs routes as well as anybody, so he can handle that role. I'd go with the kids and maybe draft one more guy on the second day.

Tim: Do you think the Rams will go after Nnamndi Asomugha. He could really revamp our secondary Paired with hopefully Bartell and Atogwe and a saftey to be named.Any Ideas on the saftey spot?
Jeff Gordon: Cornerback is one of the areas the new coach will look. But keeping Ron Bartell is step one and salvaging the Tye Hill investment is step two. I don't mind Craft at all. Maybe if Rex Ryan comes, he can bring safety Dawan Landry with him.

Tim: Where do you thin the Rams will go with their midlle backer situation. I hear Maualuga might slip to second round do you see them taking that chance or do you see them trying to address it in free agency? I wouldnt mind seeing Witerspoon Maulaluga Tinoisamoa pairing linebackes next year.
Jeff Gordon: I'd be shocked if that guy fell to the second round.

ramsfan80: With JZ about to resign what title will Billy D have for 09? Will there be a team prez, gm, etc. Also, can you guestimate at how much cap room the Lambs will have to play with this offseason.

Yes or No on the follwing players returning for 09:

Holt
Pace
Little
Barron
Pisa
Cogs

Thanks Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: Billy will have GM responsibilities. I don't know that the Rams will even have a team president, really.

The cap room will depend how what the team does with their veterans, including some of the guys you mentioned. I see Holt leaving. Little could return for less money IF the team sticks with the 4-3. Pisa played great the last few games, so he could return -- especially when you look at the team's lack of depth there. Both tackles could return because the options aren't great. The Rams will draft a tackle, perhaps first, but the team has no depth there at all past Goldberg.

I'd bring Richie back and try to settle him down.

Tim: Who do you hope the Rams go for QB competition next year? I cast my vote for Cassel or Derek Anderson.
Jeff Gordon: Cassel will be way too expensive, but a guy like Anderson or Leftwich would make sense.

Tim: Why arnt the Cards making huge pushes for Derek Lowe Or Oliver Perez? to me one of them and an addition of Biemel of Ohman would solidify orur pitching staff. Larussa should shut up and let Motte or Perez close. I cant see why those 2 arnt on our radar they are perfect fits.
Jeff Gordon: Motte and Perez could both make the bullpen this spring, even if the Cards found a way to get Fuentes. Lowe and Perez want megabucks. I love them both, but they aren't getting megabucks here.

Tim: I got this crazy idea and it seems preety good to me what do you think?

Ankiel Schu Freese mabye even Todd Kennedy(as a throw in) for Roberts

Sign Adam Dunn

Wallace future 3B

Obvioulsy wont happen That would just make the team too good and Dewitt cant have that now can he. But I was just kinda wondering if you would like that
Jeff Gordon: Wallace is better suited for the outfield than 3B. Freese or Craig will play third in the future. Rasmus will likely lead off, eliminating Roberts' appeal.

Dunn is a one-dimensional power guy and a lousy outfielder. He could be a Richie Sexson-like bust for his next team.

Mark G: On the SF hailmary when Atogwe went for the int instead of doing the basic fundamental football technique of slap the ball away when it can mean the game represent the team's lack of basic fundamentals? Furthermore should the rams seriously consider Jim Haslett, when his players of many games lack discipline? Miami is a playoff team, when they put the right people in charge.
Jeff Gordon: That big TD play was a disaster across the board. Two WRs in the same place, a predictable bomb and the Rams can't swat the thing away. Amazing.

laramfan4life: Does anyone besides me realize that if it wasn't for an offensive lineman from the Redskins trying to be John Riggins or that fluke win at home against the Cowboys, we would have the same record as the Lions!!!!! I actually think the Lions are a better team than we are. Why on earth are we talking about receivers running the wrong route in the second to the last game of the season? Don't they practice during the week? Can't they read the defense? Steven, if you're hurt sit out, oh never mind you don't like to share your carries. I can't wait to see how this plays out.
Jeff Gordon: Don't rip Jackson for playing hurt. He actually did a pretty good job at it, all things considered.

I agree about the receivers. How could there still be confusion? If they know the plays, make them run the routes over and over, hour after hour, day after day after day until they figure it out.

Josh: "Jay Zygmunt expected to step down this week"

This is like a victory for the Rams. A real Christmas present from the new Rams front office to its weary fans. Finally, my wish has come true.
Jeff Gordon: He effectively yielded that job earlier this season. His fate was a forgone conclusion.

Zac, TN: Gordo,

First of all I hope you have a Merry Christmas.

I have been wondering why Mo has not picked up some players. I have come to a conclusion that he is a young GM and he is afraid to make a big time move, such as signing a starting pitcher. I know it is a hard thoughtful process, but come on he has a lot of people depending on him. Why give what he gave to Fuentas and save that to get a Starter? We have Perez and Motte waiting for there chance. The problem last year was that Perez did not have experience and he needed to get some. Well II hope they know they can battle it out in Spring Training to get win the job. That will put tons of pressure on them to win the closer role. I believe Perez is ready for this role. I think a lot of fans believe in him and want to see him at that role. We really did not hear this guy Fuentas come up till last year. Where has this guy been? He is in his 30s and I just have a gut feeling he could be a bust.

I really like Brad Penny. I know he is on the DL, but what a pitcher when he is healthy. I hope Mo has looked at him. I hope he looks at someone. Gordo I know I sound depressed and I am. I just hope Mo gives a Christmas present this year that is worth something I can keep!
Jeff Gordon: Most if the FA pitchers remain unsigned for a reason. They are all holding out hope that the Yankees sign them. Once the really big market teams are done buying pitchers, the prices will come back to earth for the unsigned guys and you will see players sign - in St. Louis and everywhere else. Right now, the market is frozen.

rj: Jeff:

If they trade Ankiel, where will the left handed power come from? You might say Duncan, but can we afford to let him play left field everyday? Don't think so. Is there any way they can bring him in and sign him to a long term contract? And speaking of, these contracts are just ridiculus. These premadonas are asking hard working people - some of whom make $10 and hour - to come out and watch them play for $50 tickets. I think people everywhere ought to just say NO for the next year, and stay home. We can certainly get along without them. After all, they saw fit to cancel the world series didn' they?

Sign me - PO'd in STL
Jeff Gordon: If they trade Ankiel, that might open a spot for Wallace to emerge at some point next season. Rasmus will also odd power. And Duncan is still there, as noted.

brian robertson: will the cards make any moves this week? also will we sign brian fuentes soon? who are the starting pitchers we are interested in?
thanks
brian
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will make moves when the market finally moves. There will be options, probably all the way until spring training. With teams cutting back, some pitchers will be left standing when the music stops.

The Cards like several of the FA starters. If they don't get Fuentes, look for them to shift some money to that market.

Tackleberry: Do you think the Rams can add a provision to the contract of the new coach that limits the number of 2nd/3rd string players & aging veterans he floods the Rams roster with from his old team and subsequently installs them as starters?

Not that I haven't cherished the Glover, Chavous, F. Brown, And Jason Craft days.......but I haven't.
Jeff Gordon: You have to get players from somewhere. There will be enough FA money to buy one or two starters. After that, the team will look at rookies and back-ups to add new blood. That's life in the NFL.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

If Looper ends up in Milwaukee, what kind of impact do you expect with that defense behind him? Then again, he will have that offense behind him...I would expect more wins and a higher ERA.
Jeff Gordon: Don't forget Milwaukee's bullpen woes. This could be a tough year for the Brew Crew.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

Do you expect any moving and shaking this week, or are things going to be pretty dead until after the New Year?
Jeff Gordon: Once Texeira and Ramirez land -- if they land -- things will start happening. Boras has everything at a standstill.

Tackleberry: Do you think the locker room supports Haslett because he is the "known" entity. Players know what to expect, guys are secure in their standing, and in general the team is comfortable (though unproductive)?

It just seems weird to me that the players would get behind a guy verbally & emotionally, fail him physically, be held out as losers, and continue to sing his praise.
Jeff Gordon: If they like him so much, maybe they should win some games for him.

ueaces: Hi Gordo,
Will be interesting to see how the Fuentes drama will play out from here on. With no other offers on the table I, for one, do not fault Mo one iota for his reasonable offer. Why bid against yourself? Some reports are now saying that BF may end up signing for less than what the Birds offered.
Even as the Angels have stated they have droped out of the running for Tex, does not mean that will now focus on Fuentes..they still want to find a hitter.
This may be a case of a player and an agent posturing a market for themselves that really never existed.
Jeff Gordon: The Teixeira money was huge. The Angels could use to add Fuentes AND offense, although not Manny.

Now, if Anaheim really doesn't want Brian, then Fuentes would be wise to take the Cards money and run. But I see him landing in Anaheim.

fcoprado: Uno mas, Gordo.
One more game and this hell season is over!
Time for the housecleaning to begin. If not,it already begun.Quick, Gordo right now, Ryan or Shwartz. They're both good, but I can't decide on which one.
Jeff Gordon: I've talked to Rex, who has family here, so he seems like a good fit to me. He grew up in the business and he has seen all manner of goofiness. (Again, there's a good fit!) But there are several possible choices and I really can't handicap their potential as head coaches.

ellsworth11: Two questions: 1. Please explain how everyone on the Niner's defense "knew" that there was a draw play called? and 2. Since Al Saunders has been blamed for bad play calling all season, has he ever been interviewed by anyone in the media and asked to explain what he's doing? Are the coaches/coordinators allowed to be interviewed after games, or is it just Haslett?
Jeff Gordon: Linehan let his coordinators chat. Haslett has tried to be the post-game spokesman since taking over. On the draw play, the Niners hadn't been blitzing lately -- but that seemed like an obvious time to pressure Bulger. Sure enough, the blitz was called and Jackson ran right into it.

Petey123: Jeff, you think the Rams will sell out the 2009 home opener? You know of any plans to improve relations with Rams fans?
Jeff Gordon: Fans will want to see massive change before they buy in for next season. The Rams are on the clock . . .

keith7673: The Rams legacy is at least as I have followed them , is kicking guys to the curb too soon. He should have been able to retire a Ram on his own terms. Man when you have to hear Chad Ocho Johnson this, T.O. that you appreciate Isacc and his approach even more. He’s the Walter Payton of receivers in attitude and performance. How good would it have been to have Isaac Bruce around to "bridge the gap" with Torry & the "teens". At least Derek Stanley was edified by Ike

Thank-You Mr. Isaac Bruce I grew-up admiring Henry Ellard, saddened when he too was undervalued by the Rams. Why is he not in the H.O.F. After adding to an already impressive body of work as a Ram he played for the Washington Redskins four more good years. This after playing eleven years a Ram,remembering This as "John Robinson / Eric Dickerson led team. I always thought because Mr Ellard never won a championship he was allowed to move on as a Redskin. However,I now believe it has proven to an obstacle preventing one getting elected into the H.O.F.

Do not get me started on Dave Elmendorf He even went to a Super Bowel. The pain of that loss was lessened slightly by XXXIV only to be magnified again by XXXVI. So I took that to mean that have to not only go to a Super Bowel you should probably win it to get in the H.O.F. Somehow that doesn't seem right. Someone needs to make it right. Make it fair. Or was like my father used to tell me? "Life is not always fair, nor fair always".

Is there anyone their who cares enough to try and make it like my mom used to say. Make it a little fairer, more right?

Thankfully,
Keith Ramsey
Jeff Gordon: Unfortunately, in the salary cap system, every team loses great players before they are ready to quit. The Rams tried to lock in more of their key guys under Linehan and it backfired, since the team now has some older guys getting huge money in the twilight of their career.

Franklin: Oh Jeff,

Who do you see on the Cards bench this year, esp. in relation to the infield? Tyler Greene? David Freese? Aaron Miles? Surely not Brendan Ryan?

It's me,
Franklin!
Jeff Gordon: Ryan is an option. So is Brian Barden. Eventually, Tyler Greene could be that guy. Miles seems to be moving on.

dave cobler: Hey Gordo;

I applaud the Angels for pulling out of the Mark Teixiera sweepstakes if he was only using them for leverage to up his jackpot. Now that the Angels have pulled out of the Mark Teixiera sweepstakes do you think Mo will be leaning more and more toward the other FA closers since Fuentes wish to be an Angel seem to be more in his favor? I hope the Cards shut the door on Fuentes like the Angels did to Teixiera. If his heart is set to play for the Angels; I say leave him and go on. Who would you like to see Mo go after Gordo? Of course you can set the me straight if Fuentes is not playing a bluff on the Cards.

Thank you Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: I like Fuentes because he is a strong lefty, not just a lefty specialist. He would be a great fit with Perez, Motte, Kinney, et al. If he goes to Anaheim, I suppose the Cards have to go for a mid-level starter (Garland? Wolf? Perez?) and keep McClellan in the bullpen just in case. Also, that might prompt the Cards to spend more on better lefty specialist than what they already have.

wilson777: Jeff, I drove several hundred miles the last 2 weeks to watch this mess thinking maybe I'd see a win. 2 weeks ago our defense held the Seahawks to 1 TD and the Rams had the ball late in the game. I thought just pick up a few first downs kick a field goal and its over. They came out on offense and quickly gave the ball back and I left, got in the car fast enough to hear how the defense lost the game. Yesterday the defense kept them out of the end zone for almost the entire game, we got the ball back with just a few minutes to play and I thought just move the chains a few times and its over. The offense came out and ran 3 quick plays and gave the ball back. I left and got to the car in time to hear how the defense blew it. BS, The defense was very good yesterday but the offense refuses to finish the game.If you tell me the defense is going to give up 3 TD'S in the last 2 games I would say we should have 2 wins. I think Bulger needs some incentive like maybe one of the defensive players saying 2 minutes left, here is the ball you come back off that field before the clock hits 0 it better be to the other side line.
Jeff Gordon: That was sad -- just a few more first downs and the Rams easily run out the clock. But that doesn't excuse the D for getting lost on that bomb to Morgan.

therealdealankiel: Gordo,

In light of the Angels backing out of the Mark Texieria sweeps, what percent chance do you give the Cards of getting Fuentes signed? If they don't land him, do you think that will exhaust their closer efforts, and maybe they'll just give the kids the chance?
Jeff Gordon: Fuentes is the only real closer on the market -- so if he lands in Anaheim, the Cards may bring back Izzy to compete with the kids. Maybe Jason would be the "bridge" that Mozeliak originally considered.

I'm also seeing indicators that Fuentes may not command the eight-digit salary he wants. If that is true, then the Cards may, in fact, have a shot. Some of that depends on what Anaheim does offensively -- and what price some of the remaining hitters command.

There is still a chance the bottom could fall out on these free agent salaries this winter.

larry wilson: Jeff

Its pretty obvious that one of the Rams MANY needs for next season is another legitimate running back to compliment Jackson.

What do you think of the idea of the Rams making a play for Oakland's Michael Bush this offseason? He's got Jackson type size (even a little bigger at 245) and is vying for time with starter Justin Fargas and this years #4 overall draft pick Darren McFadden.

With Bush, the Rams wouldn't need to draft another RB..or pick another one off waivers to fill their needs at that position.

Have a great holdiay...
Jeff Gordon: That's a great example of what the Rams have to consider. Oakland was overloaded with RBs before getting McFadden -- and they are still overrun at that spot. And the Rams do need a heftier alternative to Darby, Pittman or Leonard behind Jackson.

Mike: Gordo,
I know it's popular to pile on a 2-13 team, but why is there what seems to be an inordinate amount of negativity surrounding the faithfulness of Rams fans? Did anyone see the crowd down I-70 at Arrowhead yesterday? That so called die-hard football town managed to maybe get 30K in Arrowhead and attendence at Chiefs games has been terrible nearly all year. The reason fans don't show up to Rams and Chiefs games? Because the teams are each 2-13. Simple as that. St. Louis is a great NFL town and market as evidenced by the GSOT Era and I wish the media in this town would give the fans a little more credit rather than play to the fears of the team moving or whatever. If this organization can turn it around and win some games the dome will rockin like it once was and tickets will be hard to come by. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: It's the NFL. When the Rams start competing again, the will draw. I don't get all the bashing of Rams fans. When you stack 2-13 on top of 3-13, you do not deserve fan support. An organization has to try really hard to lose that many games in the NFL.

Sure, this is a baseball town -- but all the pro teams draw well when the teams are competitive.

Jordon W.: With Teixeira not staying with the Angels, it appears as if Fuentes will sign there. Where do the Cards go from here? Is the Ankiel to Yankees for Ian Kennedy drum still beating?

Thanks Gordo for taking questions--hope you and your family have a great holiday.
Jeff Gordon: Am OF/SP trade is possible -- but it could be quite possible to add a veteran pitcher at an '08 Lohse price, due to the MLB-wide reluctance to spend. Again, there is a chance that FA prices will plunge in this market.

With money to spend and trade chips to move, the Cards are in a great position to retool.

David: Hey Gordo,

Let's imagine you get the Cardinals GM job...

1) How much are you willing to spend on Fuentes?
2) What free agent SP's are at the top of your realistic wish list?
3) If we don't get Fuentes, any chance we can move the mound and have Ankiel close from CF?
Jeff Gordon: I'd spend $10 million per year on Fuentes, but it's not my money. To me, he offers unique qualities to this team.

As for SPs, I'd got for Wolf or Perez to get a lefty in the mix.

It's be fun to watch Ankiel pitch in a mop-up situation, wouldn't it?

Brian: Forget the talk about Haslet coming back, what about Saunders? The pathetic play calling hasn't helped this year either. He has got to go.

Who in there right mind would want to take this mess over? I assume the only people you would get that are interested are O and D Coordinators.
Jeff Gordon: Former head coaches would take this job, as would most top coordinators. And, yes, anybody coming in will want to start over.

JPP: Seasons Greetings, Gordo.
Given that last nights loss was to the Bruins, was Andy Murray wise to sound off on specific players? Presumably the Blues will lose a lot more games over the season. Wouldn't Murray be better off trying to keep morale on a battered, diminished team up?
Jeff Gordon: You always have to boost them . . . and blast them sometimes, too. But coaches do have to be careful not to beat the spirit out of a team already dealing with so much adversity. It's always a fine line.

To be honest, I think Haslett should slap the Rams around more than he does.

Brian: Big week or day for Mizzou getting the local kid from Gateway. I would have gotten physically ill if we would have committed to Minnesota. He seems like the impact player that they desperately need, hopefully on defense.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, it's like the Gophers are all that Golden. Mizzou ought to hold serve in St. Louis on the kids they really want.

Rob: Gordo, Well the Rams game yesterday reminded me of the old football Cardinal days. A December afternoon, playing out the string because of an inept front office, poor coaching, and not enough good players.
I have no problem with Devanney running football operations, but I want to see Marshall Faulk brought back in a key role in the organization. We need someone with his experience and presence walking the halls of Rams park. I want him part of the interviewing process for the next coach. What do you think the possibility of that is?

Looking at the Sporting News top 99 players coming out of the draft it looks to me like the Rams should be able to get their stud OT and say bye bye to Mr. False start Barron. There are a couple of hugh DTs listed for round 2 and ILB's available in round 3. What do you think the Rams first three round priorities will be? Do you think there is any trade market for Alex Barron or Richie Incognito? No way either of them should be on this team next year.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: The trouble with running off players is simple: They are hard to replace. You need more job competition and better depth. Can't get there by ditching guys in their athletic prime. Let the next staff create a new atmosphere that challenges the players to finally improve.

I Needahammer: This is not the first time that I've heard that the opposing defense was calling out our play before the snap. The opposing defenses know our offense better than our own players. Zyg and Martz shaking hands??? Best of all, Chip is keeping Shaw around to help make decisions. We were the worst team of the 90's and we are well on our way to that same mark in the 2000's. The problem has been our owner keeping this loser around because of personnal reasons only known to the owner. Chip is a joke - proven by the fact that he is keeping the idiot Shaw around. I've always been a Ram fan (40yrs), but I will refuse to buy anything that supports this joke of a franchise until he is FIRED. This will probably only happen when chip sells the team. NO TRUE NFL OWNER WOULD KEEP THIS IDIOT AROUND FOR ANY REASON. My team, THE RAMS, will never improve until we get a TRUE NFL OWNER. Until then... I will not have a team. All of you in the STL should follow suit,,, Chip will be forced to sell. Chip and his family live in LA LA land, and I don't mean LA CA.
Jeff Gordon: Chip will sell the team. He has no long-term aspirations to own a NFL team. And he wants to find the right owner for St. Louis. He is trying to do the honorable thing. Shaw continues to advise him, so that is less than ideal. But at least he is letting Devaney do the football stuff without Zygmunt getting in the way.

Chris: Gordo,

Murray blasted the team and called people out after the game yesterday and it seemed Tkachuk was none too pleased about it. Is this a good motivational tactic by Murray or will he lose the team? Are we seeing the beginning of the end of the Murray-era with the Blues?
Jeff Gordon: There is always a risk of losing players. And Andy went down that road in LA. A coach has to challenge, but he can't go too far or beat on them too often.

Griff21: Murry should add another name to his list, his own. Why play a tired goalie coming off an injury in back to back games? he sets the lines, explain how a guy like jensen ever deserves to play with berglund & perron? if a coach cant motivate his team maybe his time is up.
Jeff Gordon: Murray isn't the first guy to put a grinder or tough guy with skilled guys at even strength. The idea is to have the guy make some big hits and free up space for his teammates. With the Blues missing three skilled forwards, you will see more of that than is ideal.

I don't mind starting Legace back to back at home - especially coming off a win.

ronjon1702: This is prolly a question for Jim Thomas but with the talk of Bell possibly playing right tackle next year where does that leave Mr.Barron? I cant even think of a first round tackle who didnt at least get a shot at guard before getting the boot.
Jeff Gordon: Barron has actually played OK. Now, there is some thought that he could become a utility lineman for a year and back up both guard and tackle. Or Bell could do that job, since he plays both. I'm not excited about Bell at right tackle since he couldn't handle playing left guard this year.

These are two great examples of guys the next coach needs to salvage. Both have the potential to be pretty good. You'd hate to see them reach their potential elsewhere.

Steve: So with the Blues apparently headed for another high draft choice, what exactly should they be looking for? Would you take best available or trade down for extra picks. Is there a goalie in this years draft worthy of a top 10 pick?
Jeff Gordon: Bishop is just about ready for the NHL, so I doubt they will take a goalie. And with Johnson and Pietrangelo coming back next year, seems obvious that the team needs to take a center.

Griff21: Ok I get that Polak is a young guy and should stick to the game plan, but if you have a chance to score like that you have to take it. we are starved for offense , one of the D finally step up and Murry rips on him. He might have put himself out of position, maybe would have resulted in an odd man rush if he missed , but he scored. Murry picked the wrong time to speak up, should have done it before the game. then maybe we would be on a 7 game losing streak.
Jeff Gordon: That was a great time to step up into the play. The Blues need to do more of that to actually score some goals. Polak is playing great; the team;s bigger issue is the veterans who got out of position game after game after game in their own zone.

Mark Hayden: Happy Holidays, Gordo. Why would the Cardinals not tender a contract to Braden Looper? Is he asking for too many years? Sounds like they're relying on Carpenter - a dangerous propositon.
Jeff Gordon: There are lots of free agent options better than Looper -- including some lefties. Or the team could promote McCLellan to the rotation and get the same result.

herzog82: It seems that Fuentes to the Cards may not happen and I honestly don't think it's a bad thing. How much money do the Cards have remaining to work with? Any word on the Cards looking into Hoffman for a year and signing a couple of starters like Wolfe and/or Perez. I think 2 out of those 3 would cost the Cards about 18million (6-8 mil for Hoffman and 10-12 mil for Perez/Wolfe)
Jeff Gordon: Those prices may come way down. Hoffman, for instance, shouldn't command nearly that much. One or both starters could hit eight digits with the salary . . . or they may not. The agents and GMs are really shadowboxing right now.

Here is what is scary about the Cards: The team may not spend $100 million on players this year after all, due to the economic downturn. Their budget may be more fluid, with Mozeliak having to consider FAs on a case by case basis.

Griff21: Is Murry losing it? I'm not a Murry hater, I appreciate the fact he has a young injury-riddled team. I dont agree with the dump-&-chase system we run . never understand his line combos. his comments leave many of us scratching our heads. is he cracking up or just getting frustrated or what?
Jeff Gordon: Murray has a half NHL, half AHL team right now. So the pieces don't fit easily together. This team had terrific offensive flow when everybody was healthy. When you don't have puck-moving "D" or three skilled offensive line, it's tough to skate the puck into the zone under control.

Petey123: Jeff, your guess on if the Rams are in St. Louis past the 2014 season?
Jeff Gordon: The economy is tough locally and that is a big concern. St. Louis could lose either the Rams or Blues if things don't turn around. Now, if the right ownership steps up, commits to this region and puts up some dough for a new stadium for the next decade -- that's different. The NFL could survive the local downturn in that scenario.

bfulton: Now that Zygmunt has officially retired, the team can admit their plans for new leadership. I know there's skepticism that they'll hire a new president. Has their been official confirmation of that now? Also, have they announced plans for the head coach search, which has to happen because of the Rooney rule? When can we expect to hear about such plans?
Jeff Gordon: Devaney is assembling his list of prospective coaches. He will satisfy the Rooney Rule and then make his recommendation.

I'm not excited about the Rams trying to operate without new leadership at the very top of the franchise. The Rams have an interim owner getting consultation from an absentee executive.

Josh: I'm guessing you saw this yesterday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPczgF7m9U8. Its Kenneth Darby getting tackled by the ref. The refs name was Garth DiFelice. Think we should offer him a LB gig next year? The guy got Darby down pretty well.
Jeff Gordon: Garth sent him sprawling. Good stuff. Why can't Atogwe take such good tackling angle.

Griff21: with the frosty FA market & prices dropping, are there some new FA targets for the cards?
Jeff Gordon: Fuentes, for instance, but see his three-year value drop by $12 million. If that's true, that changes a lot. Wolf could come down as well, if the Mets don't buck up. I don't see the Cards expanding their FA search outside of pitching -- and we know all the names on that front.

mightymike105: What's up Gordo,

I know that this coaching staff is (should be) about done. If it was up to you, what type of new coach would u bring in to help steer this ship away from anymore iceburgs? Would u go with retreads or would u look for new blood? Thanks and Happy Holidays.
Jeff Gordon: I'd hire a top coordinator from a winning program and ask him to replicate that atmosphere as best as he can. In a new atmosphere, a lot of these current guys would play a LOT better.

Nathan Higdon: What are you personal thoughts on Carpenter. Do you think he can pitch 190 plus innings this year. When will the Cardinals front office know of his status?
Jeff Gordon: The Cards will know his status on a day to day basis. If he is pitching that day, then he is pitching. Any other projection is just a guess, given his extensive history of physical problems. The Cards could be foolish to count on 190 innings from him. Whatever he does this year is a bonus.

virginiatom: With the season coming to a close, how would you grade the Rams rookie class of 2008?
Jeff Gordon: About a B+. Avery and Burton have talent, but they must learn their craft. Long is fine. Greco looks fine. The young LBs are at least OK on special teams. Don't know about Schuening yet.

LA Rams Fan: How much do you think it will cost the Rams to retain Bartell? Does it make sense to franchise him at what could be close to $10 mil?
Jeff Gordon: Paying him the average of the top NFL CBs would be costly. Same for Atogwe, should the Rams go that route. I like both players, but I'm not sure they are worth elite dollars.

Scott Rhein: Hello Jeff, Thank You for taking my questions. I know the Blues have a lot of injures this season. I feel that the team is playing with a lot of heart. They are not winning but they are trying. My question is, if everyone was healthy for the Blues, what would be the lines? Who do you like so far this season? Who do you think we would trade and who would stay? Thank You for your time.
Scott
Jeff Gordon: The lines always change so it's tough to project. We saw some the potential earlier this year, briefly.

Some ideas:

McClement need to be the No. 4 center, plus a penalty killer. I like Cam on the energy line. Stastny too.
Berglund is a legit No. 1 center. I'd pair him with David Perron and let him put his strength to work.
McDonald is a great No. 2 center. Why not have him with Tkachuk and Kariya and mix speed and power on an old-guy line?
Backes is making a case to play power forward on a top line.
With Crombeen playing well, maybe he could play on the third line with Steen and Oshie.

Just some thoughts off the top of the head . . .

Brett G.: In your opinion, if nothing changes to the current roster, (besides signed bench depth or by chance some crazy FA signing or trade) what's the 1-9 look like? And, same for the rotation... W/O nothing new done?...
Also, is Barton destined for Memphis automatically? With a strong spring does he make the big league club with a chance to start? I think the kid adds the speed necessary to be a game changer. Not much team speed right now.....
Jeff Gordon: You're right about speed, but Brian isn't much of a base stealer:

I would do this:

1 - Rasmus, CF
2- Ludwick, LF
3- Albert, 1B
4/5 Ankiel, RF
4/5 Glaus, 3B (depending on pitcher)
6- Molina, C
7- Greene, SS
8- Pitcher (Tony's rules)
9- Kennedy, 2B

Rotation:

Wainwright, Lohse, Wellemeyer, McClellan, Pineiro, Carpenter, Boggs

ronjon1702: Should the media start lobbying the city, county and state now to get the funds necessary for the new rams stadium. I was thinking of running for mayor to get this done. Do you know when slay's term is up?
Jeff Gordon: The next owner will have to invest heavily in the next stadium to make it happen. Don't expect any government anywhere doing what happened here with the dome.

beast39: I've been hearing more and more that the Rams will trade down in the draft and get a mlb. If they do trade down I think they should get Maualuga. If Rex Ryan is our coach next year do you think the defense will change to a 3-4. If they do, will chris long play olb? Just some wishful thinking.
Jeff Gordon: The personnel here could fit the 3-4 IF the team beefs up the LB corps. The Rams do believe their is depth at OT in this draft, so the team could conceivably address that need with a later first-round pick.

Griff21: Berglund ranks as one of the top rookies this year, whats his chances of wining rookie of the year?
Jeff Gordon: With Brassard out for the year now, those chances went up. Also, Berglund will benefit when the other skill guys return to action. The offense will pick up dramatically.

That is it for this week -- that's for all the great questions and comments!

Have a good holiday, folks. Enjoy your time with your family.
