gus: Another coach from the Dolphins (QB), according to my knowledge, the team went 1-15 last year, is this another FOSL, but, boy, I cannot come to grips with the new team that is coming together. I want to be skeptical and remain positive, TE from the titans? Becht, Drew Bennet? T.Green, I like the guy, but come on, you got to be kidding me. Bring losers in left and right. The only thing I like about this is that we will go 0-5 next season and they will fire this coach. I don’t like what I see. RAM FAN SINCE 1979…
Jim Thomas: If you're going to post an entry, try to have your facts at least remotely right. Terry Shea the QB coach is not a FOSL. He's never worked with Scott Linehan before. Trent Green went to two Pro Bowls with Shea coaching him at Kansas City. The tight end _ Becht _ is from Tampa Bay not Tennessee. Green's career record as a starter is 57-56, so that doesn't even make him a loser. Other than that all your facts are correct. With that kind of track record, I think you have a future in sports talk radio.
Richard Spittlehouse: Hey Jim,
I'm still a little edgy about the Torry Holt rumors. The press statement released the other day by Coach Linehan was not particularly re-assuring on this matter. He made it sound like the Rams want Holt to stay, but he wasn't sure how Torry felt. Surely he needs to know how a future Hall of Fame receiver is feeling??? Do they not communicate?? Is there anything in these rumors??
Also, where do you think we stand on the following players and are we actively pursuing them:
1) Lito Sheppard
2) DeAngelo Hall
Finally, do we have the cap room after recent adjustments to make a play for Larry Fitzgerald?? That sort of player would certainly improve the sour taste in the mouth following Isaac's departure!!
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Let's see, the coach say he has no interest in trading Torry Holt. He says there have been no discussions about trading Torry Holt. He says he wants Torry Holt on the team. What more would you like him to say?
Cornerback is a big need due to the uncertainty over the Fakhir Brown situation. The Rams have expressed interest in Sheppard. Don't no about Hall.
As for Fitzgerald, if he were truly in play, and a trade package could be worked out. I'm sure the Rams would find a way to make it happen cap-wise.
Dominic: Hi Jim!
Time to answer more of the same questions...thank you very much! What are you hearing about the Rams and their thinking on Vernon Gholston? I would like them to trade down, whether for only a 3rd or so to be able to draft him over Chris and Jake Long.....your thoughts? I feel they can get a tackle later along with a speed receiver. And do you think they will try and trade Byrd? I just cant see him making this team......your opinion please? And thanx again for answering our questions.
Jim Thomas: I get the sense Gholston is a fast riser on the Rams' draft board. The Rams sent Tony Softli and d-line coach Brian Baker to watch Gholston work out last week. Gholston was off the charts _ running consistent sub-4.6s in the 40 at 260 pounds. If the Rams trade down to No. 6 or No. 7, it's no longer a guarantee that Gholston will be there.
I think the Rams will try to trade Byrd, but they'll be lucky to get a bag of chips and and a ham sandwich for him. I still think he'll get cut after the draft. By the way, he's facing a trial date in early May for that nightclub scuffle in Dec. '06.
P.S. _ For all those concerned about Larry Fitzgerald trade talk, his contract has been extended by the Cardinals.
Dave Pietrowski: Hello Jim :
Can You even imagine anyone not being impressed with the orginizational and player upgrades the Rams have made thus
far ? This considering the depth available in this years draft class matching up with the Rams needs and draft position St. Louis would sure seem to be in for a very exciting football team next season. My hope is for DT 1st round then OT second round followed by WR third round but
OT first and DT second could certainly work just as well.
What do You expect to see happen in the first three rounds ?
Thanks for keeping the info coming,
Dave
Jim Thomas: Well, I wouldn't go that far. I like what the Rams have done so far, but K Josh Brown and QB Trent Green are in essence replacements (for the released Gus Frerotte and retired Josh Brown). So those moves basically are a wash. The only upgrade has come at G, where Jacob Bell should shore up things on the left side. I was hoping the Rams would've made one more big splash in free agency before the shelves were cleared.
As things stand now, they need a starting caliber CB, starting caliber WR, starting caliber C, and third tackle/tackle of the future. It's asking a lot to think the Rams can get all that done in the draft.
Dave Pietrowski: I meant Defensive End not Defensive Tackle.
Sorry,
Dave
Jim Thomas: I figured as much.
I hate Brett Favre and I live in Wisconsin: I am a rams fan in wisconsin, so watching the rams this year (online for all but 3 games) was tough enough, but then the pack has to have a great season. Anyways why the hell won't the rams trade a 1st round pick for DeAngelo Hall? They are getting a sure thing pro bowler in his prime. I'd say that's better than "hoping" Jake Long will pan out or someone else at that pick. At the very least why won't they trade down and put pick a 2nd or 3rd round pick? They need all the help they can get in this draft.
Jim Thomas: Hall is a very good player. Sometimes he wears his emotion on his sleeves, but he's a good talent. But I wouldn't give up a No. 2 overall pick for him. Maybe _ maybe _ a second-rounder.
Matt: I really hope the Rams FO doesn't get any "bright" ideas and trade Action Jackson. There was an article I read in regard to this crazy idea. I am a diehard Rams fan out in California. Is there any buzz in St. Louis about possible a possible (gulp) trade? We already let go of Isaac to "someother" team, then there were rumors about trading Torry, and now they are stirring up stuff about Jackson. Is there any truth to this insanity?? Say it ain't so!!
Jim Thomas: There's some buzz. But I don't think there's anything to it.
Thomas Turniawan: Hey Jim;
So I think consensus at Rams Park is that they will take either of the Longs at number 2, but what about their 2nd round pick? If the choice was between a WR and a DE or OT (depending on what we take @ 2), both graded equally, what do you think they would take?
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: I'm not so sure now about either of the Longs. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I believe Gholston is fast rising on the Rams' draft board. If they take a DE, I think it's between WR and CB in Round 2.
Gabriel to Snow: Hello Jim, I have 3 comments/questions:
1. We spent pretty big for Trent, but we should be OK at QB until we've groomed a youngster. I am happy we have Trent, he is a quality player & a quality person. I feel he will be much better than Bulger as a mentor for any young guns we acquire & a great fit for us if Mark can't go for any reason. Of course, my enthusiasm is tempered by the worry of having 2 quarterbacks that have recently missed significant time due to concussions. I still applaud the move. Your thoughts?
2. Everyone seems to be of the opinion that Carriker can't be an effective DE. Personally, I think he would be an excellant end that would provide more of a pass rush than most seem to think. I thought he looked outstanding at DE as a rookie the few times he lined up there. After all, what did Mario Williams due as a rookie #1 overall pick? How do you see it?
3. I realize it is not up to Jerry Rice what # Ike wears, but I still give him kudos for giving Issac the green light to wear #80. I kind of expect Ike to choose another number. What I really hope to see, is a decision by the Rams to retire the number 80 in honor of two of the greatest Ram receivers ever, Isaac Bruce & Henry Ellard. To my knowledge a number has never been retired in honor of two players, but I think it would be fitting in this instance. What's your take & do you see any chance this will happen?
Jim Thomas: 1.) Green's concussions are a concern, particularly if the line blocks like it did last year. Green will be a good mentor for Bulger. Plus, Linehan has seen the error of his ways and plans on carrying three QBs next season, with No. 3 being a young, developmental QB.
2.) Carriker's a little different body type than Mario Williams. I too have doubts that he can be a consistently effective rusher if he's playing DE on an everydone basis. With Leonard Little nearing the end _ he has told me consistently that he plans on retiring when his contract's up (following the '09 season) _ the Rams need an edge rusher.
3.) Bruce has even suggested that if the Rams retire No. 80, it should be retired with both his and Henry Ellard's name beneath it.
D. Ippensen: I like Trent Green coming back as the back-up QB. Now if we can find another WR and some more tacklers for the defense, maybe 8 - 8 is a chance. Still hope we get OL Long with first pick. Who will be the FB next season ?
Jim Thomas: FB could be Brian Leonard, who plans to add 10 pounds in the offseason. Based on what we saw last season, I hope it's not Richard Owens.
Cory Radford: Jim, a couple of questions/comments...
1). I have heard some comments regarding Vernon Gholston and how there is some concerns regarding him taking off plays. Also I see him as a 3-4 OLB and not a 4-3 DE (to weak at the point of attack.) What is your take?
2.) What WR names are you hearing from Rams Park that the Rams like, maybe as early as the #33 pick? Speaking of Early, I really like Early Doucet from LSU. And so does Marshall Faulk (Faulk said he was the best WR in the draft during NFL Network Coverage of the Combine.)
Jim Thomas: 1.) I talked to a scout who told me he has concerns about Gholston occasionally taking plays off. I hope that's something the Rams look at. Don't know about Gholston at the point of attack, although he's certainly strong enough. I believe his 37 bench presses at the Combine tied for the high this year (with Jake Long).
2.) As for WRs, I really don't know who the Rams like.
Gabriel to Snow: Just heard Julius Peppers is being shopped. What is the chances of the Rams having an interest?
Jim Thomas: Given their situation at DE, they'd be silly not to at least look into it.
Andrew B.: I had read that the Rams were intrested in drafting a possible developmental project at QB on the second day. Not that it matters, I like Josh Johnson from San Diego. I was wondering, considering all of the needs, how or if the signing of Trent Green affects their plans.
Thanks,
Andrew B.
Jim Thomas: Rick Smith, the Rams PR director and a San Diegoan, is pushing hard for Johnson.
Aaron M.: The Rams are in desperate need of adding WR help. There does not seem to be many viable options for the Rams in free agency to add one. But one guy in the draft that is going under the radar amongst the fans is a WR from Vanderbilt. He is personally my favorite WR in the draft. Earl Bennett has nice size (6-1 205) and good speed (4.4 range).
But the real reason that I want the Rams to draft him is because the thing is best at is running precise routes. He is like an Ike or a Holt in the way he gets in and out of his cuts. Do you see the Rams drafting a guy like him even though he does not have the speed to spread the field that the Rams are looking for?
Jim Thomas: Linehan would prefer size and speed, plus run-after-the-catch ability. But those guys aren't easy to find.
Dave: I heard we are interested in acquiring Lito Shephard from PHI would we have to give up a high profile draft pick to get him? Who on our current roster would make this deal happen?
Jim Thomas: Don't know about the current roster. But I wouldn't give the Eagles either the Rams' first-round or second-round picks. Maybe a third-rounder.
DocHal: Jim,
First, I have to say that I really look forward to your columns in the P-D and in The Sporting News.
Now to the questions: What's going on with Otogwe? Is he mulling a Rams' offer for an extension or is he waiting to see if another team matches the Rams tender? I don't think we can afford to lose him at this point, do you?
Jim Thomas: The Rams were trying to get an extension done with him before the free agency period started. I'm not sure if they've talked since he has been tendered. The Rams consider him an ascending talent and would like to re-sign him before the start of the '08 season. Keep in mind, a team making an offer would have to forfeit a first-round draft pick if the Rams did not match.
James Griffin: The two Linehan drafts have gone 1.Defensive Help 2. Offensive skill position 3. Flyer on athletes who are raw
Do you see the same trend continuing in this draft....DE/DT, WR, DB? Get help at tackle through Gorin, Stussie and another free agent...
Jim Thomas: The team has done nothing so far to help themselves on defense. And they've cut one starter (DE James Hall) and are about to lose another (LB Brandon Chillar) in free agency.
Mick: My question is about dayn looker...now that wilkins has moved on, could you see Donnie Jones as the fulltime holder? And cutting looker...he would rank below Stanley, Hagans, Hall, Holt and Bennett....plus at least ONE maybe 2 rookies from this draft....
Does trent green have any experience as a holder?
Also, Since Aaron walker was the backup long Snapper, who do u see as the backup to that position?
Jim Thomas: I could see Donnie Jones as the full-time holder, but I think Looker's staying. (He has one more year left on h is contract.) I would rate him ahead of Hagans.
Just talked to special teams coach Al Roberts; he doesn't know if Trent Green can hold. (Green has been a starter for so long in the NFl, if he has held, it's been a while.) Roberts also told me that Richard Owens is an excellent long snapper.
Mick: The rams seem to have pined themselves in a corner...there is hardly a pulse in any remaining FA DE and no value at RFA, if chris long goes No. 1, the rams MUST either reach for Gholston or draft Dorsey and move carriker outside which would give us less pass rush than J.Hall...adyenju and eric moore are surely not even going to be considered as starters.....
Jim Thomas: I'm not so sure the Rams consider Gholston much of a reach at No. 2 right now.
Mick: The cornerback sitution is interesting, the rams seem to have 3 nickleback sort-of-guys. (Wade, Bartell, Brown)...problem is, while brown is pretty solid, none have really done enough (neither has hill but we cant give up) to be a true starter....and the rams see that with the interest in Sheppard and J.Reeves.
Problem is, if we draft a guy after in the third or later, he enters a log jam and may never get the time he needs to develop. How do the rams stop this?
Plus, reeves was being looked at as a No.3 right? They dont see him as a starter over the current personel.....once again he would have been another extra body taking reps away from guys that need to develop.
Jim Thomas: Again, Brown could be out of the picture anyway. You could trade for Sheppard or D'Angelo Hall. Or take a corner in the second round. Reeves is out of the picture now, having signed with Houston.
Dennis Riccardi: First off thanks for the column. It's always interesting reading the fans questions and your answers.
How do you see the RAMS answering one of the most glaring problems, which I consider to be the offensive line? Seems most if not all the good players have been snatched up. I like the move signing Bell, he's young and has alot to offer.
Jim Thomas: Center remains a big question mark. The Rams are going to take a good hard look at Mark Setterstrom at C. Dustin Fry will get some work there in minicamp and training camp, although it looks like the coaches now see his primary position as guard. Brett Romberg who's a free agent, could re-sign. KC veteran Casey Wiegmann is a free agent, but is getting up there (turns 35 in July).
At tackle, even if the Rams don't take Jake Long, they need a third tackle for this season and a tackle for the future. So maybe they draft one in Rounds 2 or 3. (If they don't take Jake Long at No. 2.)
David Carriger: Jim ,I admit I am not real good with capology , but can you please explain the financial difference between what we spent for Trent Greeen vs. what it would have cost to keep Ike here.I think most of Rams nation would agree that if the dollars are close to equal we would have rather kept Ike. Thank you.
Jim Thomas: Green will count $2.6 million against the cap this season: one-third of his signing bonus ($700K); his base salary ($1M); and his reporting bonus ($2.6M). Had Bruce accepted the Rams' final offer, which was $3.5 million, he would've counted $3.5 million against the cap.
So it would've cost $900K more to keep Bruce than to sign Green.
Carole giese: Please tell me the Rams orgainization is not serious about bring back Trent Green as our back up quarerback.
Major concussion,major concern.
Jim Thomas: As you know by now, they're $8.9 million serious.
Jesse: Jim,
I know it makes sense for the Rams to trade back a few spots and still pickup an impact deffensive lineman, which I perfer they do. Unless of coarse they want Jake Long. Which one of these teams and why, have the best shot of trading with the Rams. Jets, Chiefs, Atlanta, and Raiders.
If you ask me I would say the Jets for the following reasons. They already filled most of there wholes through Freeagency. They could use McFadden of Ryan. I don't see the need for Gohlston or Ellis. They would be better off with Chris Long who is suited more for a 3-4 end.
I do believe it will be a bargan for anyone in the top six to trade up to number two. The Rams seem to be wanting to unload that pick. So they can fill other needs like offensive line, wide receiver, linebacker, and safety.
Let me know your thoughts thanks Jim.
Jim Thomas: Aren't the Jets at No. 6 overall? From a Rams perspective, I think there are now some doubts that Gholston will get by the Raiders at No. 4 overall. Although Ellis should still be there.
Kevin: Bryant Johnson (the Cardinals WR) has been on the free agent market but hasn't received a lot of attention. With Isaac Bruce gone, wouldn't it make sense to bring in a big, physical receiver to fit into Al Saunders' wide open offensive scheme? I realize we have Dante Hall, but he has never really distinguished himself as a solid wideout, as much as an excellent return man.
Jim Thomas: At last check, the only two FA receivers remaining with a pulse are Johnson and D.J. Hackett. Hackett's agent told me yesterday that he has yet to hear from the Rams. Don't know about Johnson. Maybe the Rams are waiting a while for the price to go down on either player. Maybe they just don't like them.
Mike: Limas Sweed in round 2? Who's better for the Rams's style of defense, Gholston or Long?
Jim Thomas: I think either Gholston or Long would be good for the Rams in the second round. As for Sweed, I think the Rams could very well target a WR at No. 33 overall.
Nick: What interest do the Rams have in Mizzou's Will Franklin?
Also how much would Vernon Gholston's stock have to rise for him to be taken with the rams' 2nd overall pick?
Jim Thomas: I believe Gholston has been considered a top 10 pick for a while. So it wouldn't be that big of a stretch to see him at No. 2.
Don't know about any interest in Will Franklin, but I'll try to check. Sounds like his workouts at the Combine and at Mizzou's first pro day were impressive.
sean: JT,
Have you been hearing any rumors as to who the Rams like better between Chris Long and Vernon Gholston, I think we need Gholston's skill set more. Long may be a great all around player and effort guy, but we desperately need a pass rush from our DE spot and Gholston would be a nice complement to Little. Now that we have addressed the backup QB spot, do we bring in any veteran help for the WR and OC positions?
Jim Thomas: Please see earlier posts.
Organic Meatbag: Hi Jim,
I am very happy that we have a veteran leader and familiar face like Trent Green back on the team, and I know he will help push Marc Bulger in camp to get back to his pre-2007 form, but I also know what we can expect next season: As soon as Marc takes the first sack or throws his first interception in front of the home crowd, you will hear endless cheers of "We want Trent, We want Trent".
For Marc being a shell-shocked QB that took a relentless beating last year, this could turn into a very bad spot for him if there isn't that instant turnaround at the start of the new season. Do you think that Linehan will have Marc on a shorter leash this year if things go bad?
Also, I'm surprised that the 49ers didn't pursue Green, seeing as how he played in the Martz system and they are sorely lacking a veteran QB presence that could push for the starting job (that said, I am very happy that the 49ers didn't pursue him)...
Jim Thomas: Green is a team player, but he is also very competitive. I'm sure he will push Bulger on the practice field. And I wouldn't be surprised if Bulger was on a shorter leash.
ramfan njersey: dorsey dorsey dorsey d-lineman of the year a beast in the biggest game of the year we have to get him i dont believe the injuries are real enough to bypass him.
2nd choice trade our 2nd pick for the jets 6ht pick and dwayne roberson and a 3rd rounder and take v. ghoulston from miami would the rams do that ??
Jim Thomas: I'm not sure Gholston will be there at No. 6.
As for Dorsey, I believe the Rams are genuinely concerned about that stress fracture in his leg. Otherwise, I think they would take him in a heartbeat.
Old Greg: I for one was a huge proponent of drafting Jake Long from the outset, yet with the signing of Bell and the multiple needs on defense, does that even make sense anymore?
The hyper-focus on offense this off-season leads me to question the level of talent evaluation within this organization, especially on defense and in our secondary. Our 2nd round pick seems ripe for trading, especially if we can get a D'Angelo Hall or Lito Sheppard in return.
Jim Thomas: Sure it does. If you draft Jake Long, you could play him at RG for a year or two. He gets used to the speed of the game; and is ready to go if something happens to Pace or Barron at tackle. Plus, Barron has only two years left on his contract and Pace appears to be on the downside.
How would you (and Marc Bulger) like this o-line in '08:
LT Pace; LG Bell; C Incognito; RG J. Long; RT Alex Barron.
Maybe _ and I underline maybe _ I'd trade a 2nd-rounder for Hall; I wouldn't go higher than a third rounder for Sheppard. Remember, the Rams are picking at the top of each round.
Loren: I have given up on Byrd I was never excited about that pick anyway. However I would and I am sure the team would love to have Wroten live up to his potential. Do you see any signs of him doing that. I would have to think this is a make or break year for him at least as a Ram.
Boiseramfan
Jim Thomas: It's a make or break year for Wroten. Haslett still seems to think he can get something out of him.
Buzz: Jim,
I'm afraid Trent Green will be the next Chris Miller. The Rams had little choice but to sign him after they released Gus Frerotte and failed to get Todd Collins. I mean, they would look really stupid if they dropped Frerotte and didn't get someone better in FA. Was there anyone else that they could have gone after? I rest my case. That developmental QB that they're going to draft takes on added significance, doesn't he? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Hard to argue with your logic.
Arlin: Jim
I have seen mock drafts where the Rams select Jake Long to play RT. What happens to Alex Barron? My biggest problem with Jake Long is I can't get the picture out of my mind where Vernon Gholstin is dominating him in the OSU/Michigan game. Will he be able to handle speed rushers in the NFL?
Also, what do the Rams have at WR besides Holt and Bennett? Seem a little thin there.
Jim Thomas: You're not the first one to mention that Ohio State-Michigan game. Of course, Gholston is one of the top two DEs in the draft (along with Chris Long), so it's not like Jake Long was struggling against a ham-and-egger. I think the stat on Long is that he allowed only two sacks in his entire college career.
As for WR, the Rams are about as thin as can be. Right now, you have Dante Hall, Dane Looker, Derek Stanley and Marques Hagans behind Holt and Bennett.
Don Muenz: Good afternoon, Joe.
What wideouts are available in free agency, draft or trade that the Rams could reasonably acquire?
Thank you.
don in columbus, ohio
Jim Thomas: There are a ton of draft possibilities, particularly at that No. 33 pick. But history has shown us that early-round WRs rarely make a big impact as rookies. Although there are plenty (see Bruce and Holt for example) who have blossomed in Year 2. As for free agency, it looks like we're down to D.J. Hackett (injuries)or Bryant Johnson (who to me was very unimpressive in the regular-season finale against Arizona _ drops and wasn't running crisp routes).
Trade--although both are supposedly off the market, it looks like we're talking Detroit's Roy Williams and Cincy's Chad Johnson. (But both supposedly have "head case" tendencies and could be more trouble than they're worth.)
In short, it looks like there is no easy way out at WR.
Rich: What's the latest with Marques Hagans health/contract-wise and will he show us something in 08?
Jim Thomas: I believe Hagans' health is fine. He was re-signed for '08 a while back for a base salary of $370K, which I believe is the minimum for a player with Hagans' level of NFL experience.
Tom (Roseville, MN): What is the update regarding the S. Jackson rumors? I'd hate to see him go, but I also don't think he's planning on resigning with the Rams. If that is the case, the FO doesn't think he wants to be a Ram longterm (or if they don't want him longterm), why not trade him now or during the draft (depending on the availability of McFadden)?
Jim Thomas: Don't think a trade is going to happen. But I'm sure the Rams will listen to everything and everyone at this time of the year. Keep in mind, even if the Rams don't re-sign Jackson before the end of the '08 season, they can also use the franchise tag to keep him although we all know that can be messy. (See: Orlando Pace)
Ron: Jim - Other than the one long run against NO, I thought Pittman was spotty last year. Are the Rams comfortable with a Pittman/Leonard combination backing up Jackson?
Thank you.
Jim Thomas: I think the Rams aren't completely sold on Pittman. This looks like a pretty good draft year for RBs in terms of who you could get in Rounds 2 or 3, but I think the Rams have higher needs in other areas.
Steve: I hope the Rams don't pass on Dorsey without taking a careful look at his physical condition. Did a Rams physician examine him and review his medical records?
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: The Rams are taking a careful look at Dorsey. They had several doctors at the NFL Scouting Combine. There is also what's known as a re-check combine for players with medical issues, and I'm sure the Rams will take another look at him there.
Brian: Jim,
With all of the talk about the Rams 1st round pick, what direction do you think they will go in the 2nd round? Who are you hearing they like in that range? That player must be a starter next year. Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Pls. see earlier posts.
Michael Handshear: - Jim, I know you have received multiples questions asking you about who the Rams are targeting with their 1st Round pick. I'm sure the usual suspects (Long, Long, Dorsey, and maybe Gholston) are in play. I'm more interested in possible players/posistions that they may me targeting with their 2nd Round pick (#33 Overall?) I'd like to see them target a linebacker (Curtis Lofton, anyone?) or possibly a defensive back. Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: I really don't see them taking a linebacker that high, particularly with more pressing needs at CB and WR and OT (if the Rams go DE in Round 1.)
Bill: With rumors surfacing that Matt Walsh is ready to come forth with the "Spygate 2" incident, do you think there is any chance the league will have time to review the tape and possibly award the Patriots forfeited pick in the first round to the Rams? If not, is it possible we may get next years pick?
Jim Thomas: Scott Linehan & Co. can only hope.
Francisco Prado: Jim, now that the free agency market has dried up and Brandon Chillar has not been offered a deal with another team do you see the Rams now make a pitch to resign him?
Jim Thomas: F.P., the Rams have been monitoring Chillar. I get the sense, however, that now that the Cardinals have re-done Fitzgerald's contract, they will have the cap space to sign Chillar.
Joe in WV: Jim:
There has been some talk about drafting Jake Long and moving him inside to guard for a season or two (or until Orlando Pace is out of the picture). What is your opinion of what O.P. has left in the tank? He hasn'had significant playing time since '05 and even then one could tell he was no longer in his prime. Is there a market out there for O.P. in exchange for a first day draft pick or maybe a pass rusher (like Peppers)?
Jim Thomas: I would think there'd be a market for Pace. He's still not that old (32). Willie Roaf had a nice career rebound with Kansas City under somewhat similar cirumstances. But I don't think the Rams want to trade Pace. I'm not sure how much Pace has left.
Bill Morrow: Hi Jim,
Do you know if the Rams have any plans to wear throwback uniforms in any games during the 2008 season? In particular the 99 super bowl championship blue and yellow unis or the old blue ones with white horns on the helmets? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: You know, they're planning several things for next season to commemmorate Georgia Frontiere. A throwback game would be a great, although I'm not sure if that's one of the ideas the Rams have discussed.
dmitri robinson: i was just wondering are the rams looking to get a top reciever either by trade or draft? and are they really looking to trade holt?
Jim Thomas: Rams not looking to trade Holt. Yes, they're looking for receiver help.
Jeremy (Denver): Jim,
As always, really appreciate the chats, especially this time of year.
If no other options surface and the Rams are forced to chose between Setterstrom and Incognito at C, do you know who of the two they prefer for that position?
Jim Thomas: Incognito at least has played there for most of a season (2006), although his shotgun snaps still need lots of work. As for Setterstrom, I don't think he's even played C in college. But he did as for a football a while back during a trip to Rams Park so he could work on his snapping. He certainly has the body type and appears to have the smarts that you're looking for at center.
Jeremy (Denver): Jim,
You had mentioned a potential trade (not a big one!) a couple of weeks back that you were unable to share the specifics on. You said this trade could take weeks to develop, if it happens at all. Two part question:
1) Is the above mentioned trade still being discussed?
2) I know you can't share who the players are/were, but can you at least tell us what position it would/could have been?
Thanks Jim!
Jim Thomas: Don't know if the trade is still being discussed.
I don't know the player or players; I do know the position; but am sworn to secredy.
Jeremy (Denver): Jim,
I feel like the Rams are backing themselves in a corner a little bit at DE. We almost have to take one at #2 now. Don't get me wrong, I am very high on Gholston and Long, but it would be nice to have options and flexibility at #2 in case a big trade offer came. I don't think we have that luxury now. We have to come out of this draft with a starting caliber DE, and I only see that happening at #2.
Jim Thomas: Agreed.
Brian: Are the Rams planning on going into the season with Corey Chavous as the starting strong safety? What does he have left on his contract.....he is a liablity and that is putting it politely. Thanks Jim.
Jim Thomas: All indications are that the Rams are planning to go into '08 with Chavous at SS. He has three years left on his contract and is scheduled to earn $3M in base salary this year. I don't know about Chavous being a liability but '07 certainly wasn't one of his best seasons.
Lee in England: Hey Jim,
Thanks for all your work on this forum. This really gives us foreign fans some great insight into what's going on with the team.
Overall, I have been quite impressed with what the Rams have done in free agency so far. They have improved in a few areas without spending silly money as tends to be the case at this time of year. However, I am extremely concerned about wide receiver. Holt, great player though he is, is definitely on the downside of his career now. Bennett has been a major bust so far but I guess we should truly grade him when he is healthy. I don't see too much more after this though and from what I've heard it isn't a position with much depth in the draft. Do you see any potential trades for wideouts on the horizon and, if not, how do we get better here? (PS What I wouldn't give to have a Kevin Curtis back in Rams uniform)
Jim Thomas: I guess it's this way with all NFL teams, but it's amazing to me how many fans the Rams have from all over. I got e-mails earlier this week from Rams fans in Australia and Canada.
Check the earlier posts for thoughts on the WR position.
No doubt, the Rams are paying for letting Curtis go. I expected the Rams to lose either Curtis or McDonald last season; I didn't expect to see them lose both in free agency. I realize Curtis wanted to go somewhere where he could be an immediate starter. But I think had the Rams offered $30M right out of the box (which is what the Rams paid Bennett and what the Eagles subsequently paid Curtis), Curtis might have stayed in StL.
Alan: Jim thanks for the vine....
Oh, that is the other Jim,
Based on Green's past medical issues how can anyone justify spending any cap money on this player. Just when everyone (media) is indicating there could be a positive change in the front office, we get this signing. I agree that Bulger is fragile and we need a backup QB that can play, but Green is not any more durable than Bulger. I would try to find a young QB that can move abit and give him the backup job. We also need to draft a QB in round 3 or 4 to groom as Bulger's replacement by 2010.
Jim Thomas: It's a gamble no doubt. Round 3 might be early for a QB given the other needs. But I think the Rams will try to get one at some point in the draft.
Dan: Gordo,
Some time ago, there were reports that Ram brass were high on LSU Glen Dorsey. With the medical issues regarding his legs, have the Rams softened on Dorsey ?
and if YES, how might the Ram draft board be 'stacked' at the top now ?
Jim Thomas: Pls. see earlier posts.
Frank: What are the Rams plans at WR? Honestly after the year Bennett had I don't think he can be counted on as a number 2 and it would be a tall order for a rookie to come into this role. The Al Saunders hiring was a great move but he needs the pieces to make his system go. Have you heard of anybody either through trade or free agency they are looking at
Jim Thomas: Pls. see earlier posts.
Bill Fleming: Jim,
Would the RAMS have any interest in Eugene Wilson, UFA Patriots? We need exp in the secondary and Wilson would seem to be a fit. Who might the RAMS be considering?
thx
Jim Thomas: Don't know about Wilson.
Don: Jim,
Now that the Rams have signed Becht, where does that leave Klopenstien & Bryd?
Jim Thomas: Klop should be fine; see earlier posts on Byrd.
Rey: Do you think that the Rams should've spent less money this year in Free Agency? They're not going to the Super Bowl this year and probably not the playoffs. Is it wise to give more opportunity to players that they've drafted from last year like Fry instead of paying for a player like Bell and Brown? The Rams are spending what Bell and Brown did for their teams but will they get their money back in return? It seems more efficient if they just go towards the draft all together. Ex. Look at San Diego, they really don't care if their UFA leaves cause they have good depth. The Rams couldve saved up so much more money this year and just spend it all out in a year where they think they have a realistic chance of going and winning the superbowl.
Jim Thomas: I think the Rams should've spent more money in free agency _ one more bigger signing at either CB or WR.
cyclone77: Mr. Thomas,
Thank you !!
I love these chats you guys put on to keep us die hard Ram fans informed.
That being said I hope this gets addressed today.
I have asked all the chats from you to JG and NW.
I need a insiders point of view. Someone who gets to see and grade these guys Monday thru Saturday.
Does WR / KR / PR Stanley have what is needed to help the Rams in 08 or was the end of 07 not the norm for him?
Also does he have the ability to be a # 3 or 4 option at WR?
Finally the same questions for 07 in season pickup Williams? If not mistaken he was alot higher draft choice than Stanley. I think a day 1 choice.
Thank You !!!!!
Jim Thomas: Right now, I think the Rams see Stanley as an eventual successor for Dante Hall, particularly at KOR. Stanley still needs a lot of work at WR, however. Williams was a third-round pick by SF in '06. Right now, I think Stanley is ahead of Williams in the coaches' eyes.
JAY L.: IS THE CENTER FROM KC STILL AVAILABLE. IF SO, WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR. WE FILL OUR BACKUP QB, BUT NO CENTER? AND ARE WE PAYING MORE FOR TRENT THAN GUS? GUS MAY HAVE STUNK UP THE PLACE, BUT WE HAD NO LINE. ANY WORD ON LITO?
Jim Thomas: C from KC is still available. I'm surprised the Rams haven't expressed interest in him as of yet although he is 34.
Green's contract averages just under $3 million a year.
Frerotte's contract averaged $2.1 per year. Although they're cap numbers for '08 would've been nearly identical.
Frank: Hey Jim --
Can we assume that Zygmunt will be the GM for the forseeable future (hope not!), or will he likely be moving on (with the retiring Shaw) when Chip takes the reins officially?
Jim Thomas: Yes on Zygmunt. Chip has taken the reins officially. Eventually, I think Shaw will step even further away from the day-to-day affairs of the team, but I don't know how long this will play out. As Chip said in his interview with the P-D, Shaw is family and he's here as long as he wants to be.
matt: Jim,
With the resigning of Gorin and the signing of Bell do you think Petitti will stay with the team or let go? Thanks
Jim Thomas: And don't forget Goldberg. I would guess Petitti gets invited to camp, but it's hard to see him making the final 53.
Steve: Just want to say that I'm glad the Rams haven't overeacted and gone crazy with free agents. But I am a little puzzled that they seem to think that their linebacker situation is fine. I think they should have at least talked to Lance Briggs. What do you think of the Rams linebackers?
Jim Thomas: Witherspoon is Pro Bowl caliber. Tinoisamoa needs to stay healthy; he was playing very well a year ago before his latest injury. Either Culberson or Draft should be able to fill in Chillar's spot. But that would make the depth shaky.
Chris: Jim:
Is there a reason we haven't heard about the Rams having any interest in WR DJ Hackett formerly of the Seabags? Seems we just released a WR, and are in need of a WR. Does this make too much sense to do?
Jim Thomas: I think the Rams are concerned about his injury history. But he does have speed, and has flashed some big-play ability against the Rams.
STiLetto: Thanks Jim for hosting.
A lot of folks believe that with Jacob Bell onboard and Pace and others returning from injury, the Rams should focus on DE. I could not disagree more. With so many needs remaining, we need to look to shoring up at least one side of the ball - namely, the OFFENSE! If you look at the films from the past two years, you see Marc Bulger getting the same happy feet that Kurt Warner did after he was pounded by opposing defenses. And now with Trent re-signed, we're two hits away from Brock Berlin. I say draft Jake Long; lets build some quality depth on the O- line, and make some holes for Steven Jackson, and keep Marc upright.
Jim Thomas: I think there's a lot of merit to Jake Long at No. 2. But don't you agree that the Rams absolutely, positively have to beef up their pass rush on defense?
Bigdaddytomcat: Is Fakhir Brown up for another suspension. you have mentioned that the rams are not confident that they will have him
Jim Thomas: I'll leave it to you to connect the dots.
Gabriel to Snow: Todd Stuessie is long in the tooth, but a very versatile & effective blocker when pressed into duty. I am sure they hope to have sufficient depth in younger players that can develop, but do they have any intetest in re-signing Todd if they are short handed?
P.S. Glad to see Goldberg on board, I was waiting for him to be locked up. As we've seen, versatile lineman are a necessity not a luxury.
Jim Thomas: The Rams still think Steussie can play. He might be one of those May, June, July signings, depending on what happens in the rest of free agency and the draft.
Russell: Hi Jim,
You do a terrific job reporting on the Rams. I'm coming up on my 40th year of being a Rams fan.
If you are able to pass along my suggestion to the Front Office/Coach Linehan/Stan Kroneke or Chip Rosenbloom, I would appreciate it!
I would really like to see the Rams honor Georgia by coming out in the first home game in the "old Blue and White" uniforms.
Your thoughts are always welcomed.
Jim Thomas: Whatever the uniform is, look for the word "Georgia" somewhere on it.
DBQIA: With the free agent acquisition of a guard, if Brandon Albert were available at the beginning of round 2 would the Rams go after him.
Also, any possibility that Franklin will go higher in the draft than Rucker?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: Don't know about Albert at the top of Round 2, particularly with needs elsehwere. I think there's a very real possibility that Franklin has surpassed Rucker. Rucker has yet to run because of a hamstring injury and there are blocking issues as well. Meanwhile, Franklin by all accounts has had two very good workouts at the Combine and Mizzou's March 6 pro day.
El Centro Ram Fan: Jim, thanks for the forum. I always enjoy it. When/how do you think the Rams will address their hole at linebacker? Is Draft just penciled in as the starter?
P.S., I wish the Rams had had the sense to draft Ryan Khalil last year when he fell in their laps. Even though I liked Leonard, I think Khalil would've helped us more and we would've have been better set at center.
Jim Thomas: It's Draft or Culberson at SLB minus Chillar. You're not the first one to mention Khali. But correct me if I'm wrong, his rookie season was hardly a sensation either, was it?
Chad: JT
What about taking WR James Hardy out of Indiana in the early 2nd round if he is still available.
Thanks
Jim Thomas: Well, he certainly has the size _ what is he, like 6'6?. And I think he ran about a 4.47 at the Combine. Don't know about his run after the catch.
chris: jim,
What are your feelings about bartell. do you think he's ready to take over if brown is out. i mean he gets better each season, he's versatile and he's even more reliable than hill. what are your thoughts
Jim Thomas: Tough call. Bartell certainly flashes big time ability. I too think he has gotten better every season. I would like to see him play more physically.
Thanks for all the questions. Time to go. See you next week.
