The Rams beat writer goes one-on-one with readers on Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. in a live chat.
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 01:00 PM CDT
Bart: Who would be your pick for a "sure thing" for the Rams at #2 this year? It would be nice to draft someone other than "someone they couldn't believe was still there" this year.
Jim Thomas: OK, one more. I believe the safest pick at No. 2 overall still is Virginia DE Chris Long. He may not be a superstar, but I think all signs point to him having a successful, productive career.
Joe Shubert: Everyone always concentrates on round one for the big named players. Lets talk about the latter rounds. If the rams take an End, Offensive Tackle or another Defensive tackle in round one how do you think a the rest of the draft for the rams will play out?
Will the team take the best available player or reach for need? Do you think the folks in the front office can nail a draft for once and get full time starters or will we see some of the same questionable picks that have put us here in the first place?
Jim Thomas: As I've mentioned before WR and CB are major needs, after that, the Rams are drafting for depth assuming they get a center somewhere in free agency.
The Rams seems to be adamant about picking for best available over need. But a lot of teams talk the talk on that subject, but then react differently at crunch time. We'll see. I think the draft will be very telling when it comes to seeing what the restructured front office can do _ but we won't know for sure about this draft for a couple of years. (Unless they do some crazy stuff on draft day.)
Well, that's all for now. Talk to you all next week.
PolderBear: Hey Jim,
Thanks for the great work, as always. I'd like to re-ask a question that wasn't answered in your last session, and I'll try to abbreviate it a bit.
In short, how is the financial situation with the majority ownership of Rams? Although I'm sure Chip does very well in his film production projects, that doesn't seem to me to position him in that billionaire territory where many NFL owners reside.
I'm assuming there are a lot of lucrative aspects to his late mother's estate -- and I'm not in interested in the family's personal details -- but I am really just wondering about the longterm financial viability of the current ownership group, particularly from the non-football revenue side. Where do they sit in the NFL hierarchy (more toward the Ralph Wilson end or more toward the Jerry Jones/Danny Snider end)?
Thanks,
PolderBear
Jim Thomas: Over the long term, the Rams are worried about the profitability of the franchise in a medium-size market such as St. Louis. The onslaught of new stadiums in the NFL since 1995 have taken the Rams from one of the league's top three or four franchises in terms of revenue to the bottom third.
There's enough money from the CBA, however, to keep the Rams a viable franchise in terms of competing for free agents, etc. But where I think non-football income comes into play is cash-flow for signing bonuses, etc.
So I don't know if this will become an issue in the future or not. But it didn't seem to hurt the Rams under Georgia _ who I believe had little or no outside business interests.
rob: Jim, thanks for the updates and answers! Any interest from the Rams in WR Clayton cut by the Bucs, had a great rookie year and is big but had a 4.43 coming out of college?
Also any thoughts on the Rams trading down with the chiefs, who need o-line help and might want Jake Long? We have a trading history with them and if we got the Chief's #2 we could use that to get Lito Sheppard from the Eagles and still get a WR or OT at 2 and our DE at #5 Gholston should still be there? THANKS !
Jim Thomas: I haven't heard anything about Clayton and the Rams. Of course, they have insight into Clayton now that Valero is on the Rams' staff (from Tampa). But I sure wouldn't give up much for Clayton. He hasn't done much of anything since that rookie year.
As for the trade down with the chiefs, there are some folks who think Gholston won't get by the Raiders as No. 4.
Steve Crellin (Isle of Man): Hi Jim,
Thanks (from this side of the Atlantic) for opportunity to ask a question. Are there any reports coming out of the Rams as to how well Adam Carriker is doing after last season's injury? When do they expect him to be back?
All the best,
Steve
Jim Thomas: Isle of Man? Holy cow.
Carriker is on course, but still may be limited in training camp.
Kevin: Recognizing that we will most likely not sign any more impact players through free agency and that we will be addressing our need through the draft (barring some unforseen trade), it looks like OL, DE, WR are the big needs. What do you think the chances are that we would grab a WR as our second pick instead of filling in the 2nd lineman need? Our third round pick is pretty high and I imagine there is some good WR still left there.
Is anyone working with Bennett to work on somethings in the offseason so he can reach his potential? Here is a guy who led the Ttans in receiving yds for 3 straight seasons. Let's help him out. If he comes on, Holt's knees stay healthy, and Looker/Hagans/Stanley/Rookie steps up combined with Jackson out of the backfield with McMichael stretching the middle, Marc would have plenty of targets. All the reason to pick a WR 3rd (even 4th?) and solidify our lines. Thoughts?
I have seen talk that we would not go for a Dorsey or Ellis player at the DT since Carriker would not make a great pass rusher DE. What are your thoughts on that?
Thanks for all the chats,
Kevin in VA. Ram Fan since 76'.
Jim Thomas: If things stay the way they are now on the roster, I'd say DE in the first round, and then the Rams would almost have to take some combo of CB-WR in Rounds 2&3.
As for Bennett, the offseason conditioning program doesn't begin until March 25, and the OTAs (practices) don't begin until May. So there's not a lot anyone can do with him until then. Bennett needs to stay healthy, and with a new coordinator and a re-tooled playbook in the works, needs to master the offense ASAP.
JTThomas: Suppose the Dolphins select Chris Long with the first selection. Fill in the blank: With the 2nd selection of the NFL Draft, the St Louis Rams select ________________.
Jim Thomas: Indiana U. WR James Hardy
Third Round--Trade for Lito Sheppard
Fourth Round--Best offensive tackle available
Fifth Round--Best QB left on the board
Ray R.: Jim,
Any interest by the Rams in signing C Justin Hartwig? If so, how realistic that we sign him? He started 16 games last year for Carolina, and would bolster our O-line. Setterstrom and Incognito would than battle it out for the starting RG position. We could then shift our attention to D-line with our first pick, and not feel pressured to draft Jake Long. Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: The Rams explored the possibility of signing Hartwig. They were certainly intrigued when he was cut by Carolina. But they had concerns about his injury history, and didn't even ask him in for a visit. I've heard some good things and bad things about the guy, but I would've thought the Rams would've been more active in his pursuit. He's signing with Pittsburgh for a relatively modest $4 million over two years.
pdub: Jim, it seems like more than a few times you've said the Rams aren't concerned about their linebackers - that they like what they have. Do you think the trio of Witherspoon, Pisa, and (if he returns) Chillar a good enough starting group for '08? Draft seems serviceable enough, and I know they like Culbertson. Does McGarigle have a future with the Rams? Do the Rams need to draft a LB?
Jim Thomas: If the Rams didn't have so many other pressing needs at other positions, I'd say, sure, go ahead and take a linebacker. But when you're DE position accounted for a combined 5 1/2 sacks a year ago. When you don't have a proven No. 2 (or No. 3) receiver _ depending on what you think of Bennett _ when you may lose a starter at cornerback. . .I'd say those needs take precedence. It is imperative that Pisa stay healthy. He was playing very well until his season-ending injury.
McGarigle to me has been disappointing. As a backup, you really have to make your mark on special teams. And for a guy who made a zillion tackles in college, McGarigle hasn't done much on special teams.
RT: I support the Devaney hiring (a move like this should have happened YEARS ago). I support the Bell signing. I support the re-hiring of Saunders.
Amid all these seemingly positive moves, the downside is we are still stuck with loser Linny. Does anybody remember that this team simply WAS NOT ready to play football this past year? That is simply inexcusable.
The bottom line is Loserhan is still the coach, and that is good news for any and all opponents of the Rams. We can only hope the team does better in spite of him.
Jim Thomas: No doubt, Linehan still has a lot to prove. And no matter what happens or has already happened this offseason in terms of personnel moves (front office, coaches, and players) that fact remains. So in that sense, your point is well taken.
joe kurtz: you notice the similarities between '99 and this off-season ?Head Coach retained after 2 miserable seasons . Each brought in a new O/C ,Martz and Saunders. Free Agency brought in an Offensive Guard ,Timmerman and Bell. The team brought in TRENT GREEN as Q.B.,TWICE ! A blockbuster trade brought in Marshall Faulk. WHO do you envision they can bring in THIS year that's worth a "2" and a "5"? Can " lightning" strike twice ?
Jim Thomas: Interesting parallels to be sure. I'm not sure there's a Marshall Faulk like talent available out there to be had.
JC: Jim,
So, I've been connecting the dots on what's been reported about Fakhir Brown. If this guy is headed for a long suspension, why can't the Rams just cut him now and save the salary expense?
Jim Thomas: When a player is suspended, the team doesn't have to pay his salary.
Russell Huffer: Hi Jim, Thanks for taking my question.
Are there any free agent prospects that the Rams are interested in?
Jim Thomas: I still think KC's Wiegmann is a possibility. And as I just reported for the Post-Dispatch _ I sent the story in about 40 minutes ago _ the Rams have expressed some interest in Tampa Bay RB Michael Pittman.
Bill Fleming: Hi Jim
Any news on Justin Hartwig?
Is Lito Shepard worth the RAMS second or third draft pick?
thx
Jim Thomas: Hartwig agreed to terms with Pittsburgh today. I would trade a third-round for Sheppard _ but not a second _ since the Rams are so high in each round.
sean: Alot of talk about offensive and defensive linemen, the need is there. But, what about at linebacker? This undersized group has been getting smashed into the ground for several years now. They certainly have not been in any way effective; pressure on the QB, coverage, and stopping the run.
Jim Thomas: The unit, like all Rams units could be improved. But obvioulsy you didn't spend much time watching Will Witherspoon last season.
bash-on: Have there been any more tidbits leaking out of Rams Park as to potential trades? What became of the trade possibility you spoke of in earlier sessions?
Thanks,
Bash-On Regardless
Jim Thomas: Have heard very little on possible trades. I haven't heard anything more on my "mystery" trade. And all in know on Lito Sheppard is that the Rams have expressed interest. Wish I had more for you on this, but I don't.
len: Hi Jim,
I know this would never happen but I would love to see the Rams trade their 2nd round pick for DeAngelo Hall and their 3rd round pick for Lito Sheppard. Both of these deals are possible. It would give us 2 shutdown corners and enable Jim Hasslett to turn the defense loose. With a draft choice of Long or Dorsey I could see that defense dominating games instead of being dominated. Any thoughts?
Jim Thomas: Well, it looks like Hall is out of the picture unless the Oakland stuff collapses. Plus, that still leaves you looking for a WR.
Damon: Hey Jim! So this massive interest in Jake Long has to be a smoke screen right? I'm not saying it would be a bad pick, but it seems like a luxury. Seems to me that we are locked in on a DE for round one. We cut James Hall and still haven't replaced him. Looks like Gholston or Chris Long to me. I applaud them for trying to fool the league though.
Jim Thomas: What if Chris Long is gone, and the Rams just aren't sold on Gholston at No. 2 overall? But I still think DE is the way to go.
Chris: Jim
How far after the most recent signings are the Rams under the cap? Do they have the room to trade for a top notch reciever on draft day??
Jim Thomas: I haven't done the math. And I'm missing some concrete info on a couple of the signings. But I think they're still more than $10 million under the cap. As for a WR trade on draft day, if there's a guy they like that much, they'll find a way to make it happen.
aj: I would love to see Trent Green challenge Bulger for the starting QB job...Bulger just didn't impress me with his pocket presence last year, even though I realize he was under some duress...but there were many times where he had no clue where the open receiver was. Do you think Green will be given an opportunity to start in front of Bulger?
Jim Thomas: I don't think Green will be given the chanced to "beat out" Bulger in camp. But I suspect there will be a shorter leash on Bulger if he struggles early in the season. Bulger did miss open receivers last season _ largely because with two broken ribs early and a concussion late _ he was worried about the pass rush.
Dino from Sacramento: Any chance the Rams are interested in the 49er wideout that was cut?
Jim Thomas: Don't think so. See earlier post.
Taylor (AB, Canada): Let's say Miami either trades out of the 1 spot or takes Jake Long/Matt Ryan. The consensus is that the Rams go Chris Long. Now I hear a lot of people saying Gholston no matter what because they feel that Long is maxed out. I am starting to become more of a fan of this guy and think that he still has substantial upside. Also I am starting to believe that Gholston may be to muscular and robotic. I was really high on him before but it seems he has trouble moving east and west. If Chris Long is gone are you leaning towards Gholston as the choice that the Rams will make. Or is it concievable that Dorsey has a great pro-day and squashes any injury concerns, that Rams go put him second on their board. Is DE too much of a need to pass on Gholston, or is Dorsey that good and could provide us with a 3-4 option in Carriker, Ryan, and Dorsey lining up beside each other. I know the Rams need a WR, but I would like to see another defensive player in round 2. Groves would be nice at LB, but a CB or a DE might be the choice especially if we go Dorsey first round. Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: I too, am tempted by Gholston. But if I had to make the pick today, I'd still go Chris Long. As for Dorsey, the Rams _ as well as several other teams, I'm sure _ have legitimate concerns about Dorsey's stress fracture in his leg.
As for Round 2, I'd be surprised if the Rams took an LB, even if Chillar left. I'd go corner or WR.
RayRam: Can you put in a word for the Rams to go back to the ROYAL BLUE Yellow and White..............This Gold stuff has got to go! It has brought us nothing but bad luck and misfortune.......Can the organization put out a survey and see what the fans want? I know what this fan wants.....Let's get back to the best uniforms in NFL History and bring back the glory days!! At worst wear them for a throwback game! They were supposed to honor Jack Snow with a blue and white uniform game...what happened to that! Pretty bad not to honor him that way!
Jim Thomas: I'm back.
I'm not aware of the Jack Snow plans. But I do know the Rams are planning several things to commemmorate Georgia Frontiere next season, and have at lleast considered wearing the '99 Super Bowl championship style unis for one game next season.
Dennis Rambeau: Can you tell me which pro days that the Rams attended so far and which players they have invited for private workouts?
Jim Thomas: When all is said and done, the Rams will attend dozens. They had a cast of thousands at Michigan's Jake Long's last week, while also looking at QB Henne and a couple of WRs. Tony Softli and DL coach Brian Baker ended Vernon Gholston's. They had people at Mizzou's pro day March 6. They had many, many folks at Chris Long's workout Tuesday (today) at Virginia, including Linehan, Zygmunt and Devaney. Linehan goes only to the major ones.
Actually, the visits to Rams Park aren't private workouts. (The players aren't allowed to work out when the visit a team in that team's city.) Unlike most teams, the Rams under Linehan have brought all 30 players (the maximum allowed) into St. Louis at the same time to meet with coaches and team officials. I believe the scheduled days for that mass visit are April 15-16. All the details are still being finalized, but I know Jake Long and Vernon Gholston for example have been invited to St. Louis.
Hey--I have to take a little break at the moment to work on a story for the newspaper. (Nothing too earth-shattering) I'll be back in about an hour.
Dale H. Pickerill: Jim, Talk about a trade involving Juluis Peppers and Steven Jackson . The Rams could then draft the Arkansas RB or Rashard Mendenhall. Thanks and always enjoy reading anything you have to say regarding football and the Rams in particular.
Jim Thomas: Peppers lack of productivity last season is a big worry. I'm a big believer in Jackson. I don't think I'd trade Jackson for Peppers straight up.
Fakhir Brown: I hear a lot of you writers saying i'm going to be suspended for a year. Do you know something i don't?
Jim Thomas: Fakhir--Give me a call. You can get my # from Rams PR.
Tim: I like what they've been doing in the front office so far. BUt even with the fact that they still have some guys that are i or about 30ish? In roder to build from the draft and add some younger fa? How do you think the them would feel about??? Trading Pace and Chavous to KC for the 5pick and a 2nd 08 and a cond 2nd and 4th 09? Then we could attack the 2rd of FA's in Olevia the ORT from SD and move Barron to OLT where he played great. And foxworth(cb-Den) and re-sign Chillard. Then at 1rd Ghoslton(OH) and trade down with DAl for 22/28(rd1) and a 3rd and M.Barbara. Trade Barbara to GB at 1rd and 4rd,and at 19 pick Cromartie(cb Tenn st) and 22 pick Jackson(Cal) and Campbell(De UM) and in the 2rd 1-Manningham(WR MICH) and Baker(OLT USC) and pick up Red Bryant(DT TX) at 3rd and a qb Johnson(USD). What do you think?
Jim Thomas: Tim--you've exhausted me with your scenarios.
Paul: I tend to agree with the rams on not wanting to overspend on marginal talent but the rest of the division appears to be getting better while we continue to wait for scrap heeps. Who else are we interested in? I still see we need an end and a third tackle.
Jim Thomas: Not to mention a wide receiver, center, and quite possibly a cornerback.
Alan D.: Jim,
Do the Rams have an interest in trading for CB DeAngelo Hall or Safety Michael Huff ?
It seems Hall can be had for a second round pick so whats the problem ? Maybe JZ heard CB Jacoby Shepard has a little brother in the draft.
Jim Thomas: As you probably know by now, Hall is finalizing a deal with Oakland.
Rams don't see safety as a big need area.
riverumbbq: Thanks for the Q & A Jim, this is all Ram's related.
Curious about the Fakhir Brown speculation regarding drug suspension.
Any hints at details of trade rumors at any positions ?
What does the team have in mind for a starting center ?
Can I have Zygmunts job ?
Thanks in advance.
Jim Thomas: Haven't heard any concrete trade rumors.
Team is looking at switching Setterstrom to center, and could still go after Wiegmann in free agency.
As for Zygmunt's job, I think you'll have to bring that up with Chip Rosenbloom.
Dominic: Hey Jim!
This is what I would do on draft day if possible.Draft Vernon Gohlston because I like his potential better that Chris Long.Try and trade our high number two for extra picks and then take a wide receiver with a lower 2nd rounder and trade our 3rd for Lito Shepard.Do you think this can happen? And what are your plans along with Howard Balzers for the radio show on team 1380 on draft day? Again, thank you for your efforts......
Jim Thomas: As I mentioned earlier, as tempting as Gholston is, right now I still take C. Long. The rest of your scenario makes sense.
I really enjoy working with H on the radio. I'm sure I'll be on with him from time to time on draft weekend, as newspaper duties allow.
Farbod: Hey Jim,
I know there will be a handful of great options of WR with the 33rd pick if we do decide to choose WR there.
Any chance you know if the Rams are eying anybody inpeticular at the WR position?
Jim Thomas: I'm sorry to say I don't. But I'll try to get some kind of an idea as we approach the draft. I do know this: Limas Sweed, the Texas WR, has a wrist problem that could cost teams _ including the Rams _ to shy away.
mike: I think the ram need to draft Jake long in the second pick of the draft. Then trade second pick of the second round to Miami for Jason Taylor.
Jim Thomas: I guess you do that if you believe Taylor has more than a year or two left. That still leaves you with needs at WR and quite possibly CB.
bash-on: Hey, Mr. Thomas. I appreciate your patience in wading through some of these inane, repetitive questions. I think it's a great idea, (was it yours?), to give your readers a conduit into the thinking of the Rams franchise.
My question: any idea what, if any, compensatory pick/picks the Rams may recieve this year?
Thanks,
Bash-On Regardless
Jim Thomas: Don't know. But they will be announced at the NFL owners' meetings, which take place March 30-April 3 in Florida. So we'll know soon.
Joe Stafford: Jim, any chance of the Rams drafting Chris Long at DE and another linebacker in the 2nd round and move more to a 3-4 defense full time? Any news on the free agent market for a center? Thanks for your time.
Jim Thomas: Long is a very real possibility if he gets past the Dolphins at No. 1 overall. I think the 3-4 is here to stay as part of Haslett's package. But actually, I think the Rams' chances of running the 3-4 as their base package increases if they DON'T draft Long. (Because they'll be woefully short on DEs.)
As you may have seen, Hartwig signed with Pittsburgh today. I'm surprised the Rams haven't made a move on KC's Wiegmann yet. (I know they're interested.)
roy: jim how much do you the rams locker room will miss issac bruce? and you dont think anyone will wear #80? thanks jim
Jim Thomas: The locker room will miss him a lot. His professionalism and approach to the game is unparalled. And besides that, he's an exceptional human being. As for the jersey number, I've never been hung up on having jerseys retired. I don't think that's a big deal either way.
RamFanInPA: Hello Jim,
Everyone seems to be beating around the bush about Fakir Brown. Has it been leaked that he will be suspended, Yes or No? This is crazy with all of the innuendoes floating around. Please shed some light definitively on this. This could affect the Rams 2008 draft dramatically. Thanks.
Jim Thomas: See earlier posts.
coley: I have been a long time Rams fan and have followed the team since the days of Pat Thomas and Rod Perry. Because they have a need at the corner position, making a play for Deangelo hall for a second Rd pick would provide instant help and upgrade the position.. They cannot guarantee the 2nd rd pick this year will even make the team especially looking at some of the previous picks in past years.. He also puts pressure on Ron Bartell to step up or ship him out.
Jim do you honestly believe we can compete this year with Drew Bennett as the number 2 wideout. I look for him to be shipped out next year with good riddens.. Very dissapointed with off season pickups.. We could have done much better.
Jim Thomas: Bennett has a lot to prove. And unless they add some kind of threat in the slot, the Rams are going to have to get an awful lot of rushing yards from Steven Jackson.
I wouldn't say I'm disappointed with the Rams' offseason pickups. I just would've liked to have seen one more big splash in free agency. Asante Samuel, Bernard Berrian, etc. (Even with the Rams rather tight cap situation.)
Buzz: Jim,
Bill Coats has written that Steve Loney should be a significant upgrade over Paul Boudreau as OL coach. Do you concur? In what areas does Loney offer improvement? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: First off, I have the highest regard for Coach Boudreau. It didn't take him long to get rehired, which should tell you something of the respect he has earned throughout the league. So I'm not going to compare and contrast.
I'll just say this about Loney _ I'm told he's a very good communicator, and a good technician.
Framk Cona: Will and should the Rams go after D. Jackson, who was resently cut by SF? I think DJack, who is 29 is better than Bruce, but he is injury prone.
Jim Thomas: Well, there's no doubt that Darrell Jackson is talented. He's made some big plays against the Rams over the years. But Jackson is prone to drops, and from what I'm told, he literally complained his way out of Seattle because of his contract demands.
Gabriel to Snow: Jim, my earlier post was a lenghty rant about our WR woes. That having been addressed, I think we have a realistic chance to be in the playoff hunt in the weak NFC West. Gordo sees 8-8 as the best case, I forsee 9-7 & the playoffs as a legitimate possibility due to the following:
Al saunders (Huge addition, kudos to the front office)
Billy Devaney (Kudos again)
Kevin O'Shea
Steve Loney
All coaching & front office upgrades ( Although Garrett & Boudreaux got raw deals)
Jacob Bell
Anthony Becht (like adding another piece to the OL)
Josh Brown (Wilkins was not up to par last year)
Trent Green (Leadership by example & attitude. Solid reliever)
Now, consider the following additions as if we just acquired them. All were totally lost to us in 07, or were playing hurt and/or missing games.
Orlando Pace
Mark Setterstrom
Brett Romberg (Should re-sign)
Richie Incognito
Todd Stuessie (A great pro, signing of Gorin may push him out)
Adam Goldberg
Drew Bennett
Torry Holt (missed time, played hurt)
Dante Hall
Steven Jackson (missed a couple games)
Mark Bulger (missed time)
Gus Frerotte (Trent takes over & Brock Berlin is not the answer for our #3)
(It's obvious no offense could excell with these losses, no matter who calls the plays)
Leonard Little
James Hall (was hurt, I think he re-signs barring great DE pick)
Brandon Chillar (missed time but Draft can play)
Pisa Tinoisamoa (great heart, hurt often, hopefully returns to form)
Fakir Brown (missed 4 games)
Ty Hill (missed time, broken back)
Ron Bartell (missed time)
I have been a devoted fan since, well, since the Gabriel to Snow days. Never seen an injury list like this. Linehan deserved a chance to compete with most of his starters on the field. Who could possibly have won with these factors? NOBODY! To Scotts credit, HE took the heat, didn't make excuses. Of course he is gone if this year doesn't show marked improvement. But add all those coaches, & players together, add in a couple more moderate free agents, plus at least 4 of the first 97 draft picks, including #2 barring trade, and it is a completely different team. It is actually a bigger on field personnel change than it was in 99. I'm not saying Super Bowl, but barring another injury nightmare, 9-7 & a possible playoff slot is not far fetched. Everyone was calling for Vermeils head prior to the 99 season, coming off a 4-12 campaign. It's no more of a reach to think this team can compete in 08 than it was to hope the 99 team would make the playoffs. Once there, who knows? Just ask any NY Giant. There IS cause for optimism, & regaining our home field advantage by putting actual Ram fans in the seats would be another positive in 08. Other than my moaning about the WR position, I can't imagine the Rams having a better off season so far. It's time for us die hards to ditch the doom & gloom act. There is ample reason to hope, but if we expect our guys to bust there chops in "Lambeau South", forget it. With few exceptions the the Rams have done their part this offseason, time for fans to do theirs. Do I have faulty logic here Jim?
Jim Thomas: Don't mean to rain on your parade. I think it's a good start, nothing more. There are still glaring holes at C, WR, DE, and perhaps CB. It's asking a lot to address all these needs in the draft.
Jon: Hey, How's it going in Rams land? Have you heard on the resigning of Chillar?I hope they do resign him.Things are looking better for us ram fans..Josh brown was a nice pick-up.Been a huge Ram fan from way-back.....JM
Jim Thomas: See earlier post.
Jersey Ram Fan: Hey JT! Thanks for keeping us up to date.
1st, Have you heard any word on Chillar's dealings? I really like this kid, and he really started to bring it by the end of last season.
2nd, C. Long vs Gholston. If you were the Head Coach of the Rams, and both were available to you, who would you choose? And why?
Personally, I think Gholston is a better fit. Just is he really worth the 2nd pick overall? Maybe we will get lucky and the Rams trade down a couple of spots and still get Gholston. Have you heard any possibilities of a trade down? And if you did, would you tell us? ;)
Jim Thomas: See earlier posts on Chillar.
Don't get me wrong, Gholston is very tempting, but I'd still take Chris Long. Gholston takes plays off, doesn't finish plays as much as he should. And that's scary for the amount of money that will be invested in a high pick.
Rams, I'm sure will consider any and all trade-down offers. But those usually materialize closer to the draft.
Pete: Hi Jim,
Rams fan in Cincinnati. I know the issue of the Rams drafting Will Franklin has been brought up a number of times already, but it seems like he's a great fit... taller than 6' and over 200 lbs., sub 4.4 40 speed, good hands, great leaping ability, RAC potential, and a St. Louis native. He reminds me a lot of Chad Johnson (of Bengals fame). Same height, a few more pounds. Wishful thinking, I know, but Johnson went early in the second round, about the time the Rams are making their second pick. If they could snag him in the third (#65), I think it would be a great value.
Just interested if you think he fits your "Linehan profile" for a WR? And, is there another WR, likely available in the 2nd or 3rd round, that would fit better than Franklin?
Jim Thomas: Actually, I think hands are the issue with Franklin. He's had some drops at Mizzou, and he was beat out by Maclin for the featured role at receiver in college. But his workouts have been great, and I certainly think he'd be someone to consider _ but I don't know about early third round.
Gabriel to Snow: Hi Jim, I just saw Hackett signed with the Panthers, don't know the contract details. I am concerned about the Ram braintrusts ability to evaluate personnel at the WR position. I have NEVER been happy with the personnel decisions the Linehan camp made, but recent decisions, perhaps due to Devaney, seem to be solid. The obvious exception seems to be WR. They will miss Ike. Bulger throws to spots on timing routes. He has never had to wonder if Torry & Ike would be exactly where he thinks. If Mark has to wait an extra half second to be sure his target is there, our revamped OL may not seem much improved. Ike was great at the sideline, deftly controlling the ball & tapping the toes so perfectly none of us could see if it was a completion until the replay. He is said to be no deep threat, but he was seldom running a deep route under Linehan. NOBODY is a deep threat if they never run deep. Ike, Curtis, even McDonald all look like they are clearly capable of helping us. Yet, we jetisoned them. Now, Bryant Johnson & Ike are with Mad Mike. We seem to be ready to let Bennett have a chance to silence the critics from the #2 WR spot. I am fine with that. I actually loved the Bennett signing. Jury is out until a healthy Drew shows his wares. But the slot is empty. I don't count the likes of Hall, Stanely & Haggans as serviceable options. Hackett was a very, very good slot man. Plus he was from a division rival, & he routinely tore us up! Yet, as far as I know, we showed zero interest. Likewise with EVERY free agent WR. Did we have a single one in for a visit to this point? My concern prompted me to think back to Billy Devaney receiver corps. I can easily remember the great tight ends, but I am drawing a blank on the WR position. Seems that they are happy to enter the season with Holt at one spot, and clear question marks at the others. I don't get it. We bring in Becht, good signing, but won't even talk to wide outs? When you consider Saunders is likely to employ 4 WR sets more frequently, we may have the same problem at WR we had on the O-line last year. Plus, Torry is starting to be iffy health wise. As it stands, we are a pulled muscle & a sore knee away from having Dante Hall or a rookie as our #1 receiver! Suddenly, due to ignoring the position so far, I find myself hoping we scoop up Daryl Jackson! Jim, I never ever thought I'd say that. Are you scratching your head over the apparent apathy toward the WR spot? Please tell me I am missing something here. Like every Ram fan, I Want to believe Devaney will pay big dividends. Nobody expects perfection, but this seems like a glaring miscalculation. Your opinion?
Jim Thomas: I believe Hackett signed for $3.5 million over 2 years. I think the Rams liked his talent, but were concerned about his inability to stay healthy. As for Johnson, personally, I've never been very impressed.
But that still doesn't answer the question. What to do about a No. 3 WR _ a speed threat in the slot? Unless the Rams have some trade in the works at the position, that leaves them almost boxed into taking a WR in the draft _ in round 2 or 3.
mr. starks: Hey, first off I am worried because I have read rumors of an uncapped season in the near future or possibly a lock out. The salary cap is getting out of hand. Just a few years ago it was in the 80 mil range and now its up to 115 mil. If it keeps rising then that means more money for tickets and fans like myself cant really afford this. When does it stop? Do you see a lockout or uncapped season possible? PLEASE NO!!! If we have no cap that means the Cowboys will be in the Superbowl every year since they can afford to pay players ridiculous amounts of money. I dont want this to turn into the MLB.
Also, I was thinking the other day and got a really legit thought. I think it would have made more sense to resign Curtis and let go of Bruce a couple of years ago when his contract ran out. I know he is a piece of history but he didnt perform worth 5 mil a year. I think Linehan HAD to keep Bruce since it was his first year as head coach because if not, Rams fans would have hated his guts. Now we have Holt and Bennett with no real slot guy.
And lastly any news on Jackson or Atogwe extension?
Jim Thomas: Several owners didn't like the CBA extension two years ago. Some feel Tagliabue rushed it through because he was about to retire, and wanted to have labor piece in place as part of his legacy. So the owners are threatening to "void" the CBA in November. (A gradual process which I think would lead to an uncapped year in about 3 years.)
While this is not an issue to take lightly, I think this is more a case of saber-rattling than anything at this point. In the end, the players and owners realize they have a golden goose. It is in both parties' best interest to perpetuate this good thing instead of jeopardizing it.
In hindsight, it would've been great to keep Curtis. I'm sure Curtis would've stayed had he known the Rams would pay $30M for Bennett and cut Bruce the next year.
Haven't heard anything new on Atogwe and Jackson.
John D: Do the Rams consider Brian Leonard a better running back or full back?
Jim Thomas: Not sure on this one.
John D: What is going to happen with Brian Leonard? Do you think that he was worth a second round pick? Why did the Rams coaching not start him at running back latter in the season when Steven Jackson got hurt and went out of the game? Isn't he a better running back than Pittman or was he out played?
Jim Thomas: I too was a bit confused as to why Pittman got all the carries as the No. 2 instead of Leonard over the second have of the season. Other than that one long run against New Orleans, Pittman didn't do a whole lot. I'm not sure what Leonard is at this point. He was good enough to gain 100-plus yards in the first Arizona game. But by the end of the season, he was limited to special teams and the third-down back in some passing situations. That's not a very big role for a second-round draft pick.
Armen Dacity: Jim,
I'm trying to get to the bottom of the Fakhir Brown situation. Yesterday, I asked Jeff Gordon about it in his chat, and he said that all he knows is that Brown is one strike away from a suspension. That's nothing new. We've known that since the middle of last year.
Others (Bernie, Karraker) are talking like they KNOW something has happened, though they won't specify what. Can you clarify this? Has Brown violated the substance abuse policy again, or is it all just speculation?
Jim Thomas: See my earlier answer. I'm not at liberty to say what I know. We'll know in due time.
Brian from Las Vegas: Do you think the Rams could be proactive and get contract extensions done this year for Barron, Incognito and of course Steven Jackson?
Jim Thomas: Barron has two years left on his contract, so the Rams will wait until after the '08 season at the earliest. As for Incognito, I'm sure the Rams want to wait-and-see what he does in '08 simply because of his injury problems and his anger management issues. Re-signing Jackson is a priority before the start of the '08 season.
Luke Donoho: Hi Jim,
Any thoughts of picking up Kalimba Edwards as a situational/rotation DE? If anything, we could use help with the pass rush. Thanks!
Jim Thomas: Haven't heard Edwards name mentioned at Rams Park. I'll try to check on it.
lewis: Thank you Jim. This is fun to keep in touch with what the Rams are doing.
1. The Rams have taken some steps to shore up the offensive line. Do they have an interest in retaining Milford Brown? He seemed to do a decent job and worked at multiple spots - and he has worked with Steve Loney before, in Arizona (maybe that is the hesitation?). Seems like that could definitely help with depth, at least. Pace, Bell, Incognito, Brown or Setterstrom or J. Long, and Barron left to right doesn't look too bad with Goldberg, Fry, and whoever is not starting at guard as backups.
2. I realize that there is importance to keeping other teams unaware of what the team's draft plans are, in order to possibly foster trade possibilities, but might we interpret the Rams' lack of pursuit of a DE in free agency as a signal they are think they can find a starter in the draft? Or did they pursue a DE in free agency and I missed it?
3. Do you know if the current draft team looks at the current draft position in the way I have heard it from others: 1st round choice needs to be an immediate starter, 2nd round choice needs to be someone on the field a lot, with the possibility of being a starter, and 3rd round and lower being depth players who may be able to challenge for playing time?
Thanks for your answers.
Jim Thomas: 1.) Milford Brown is a good person and gives good effort. But he was horrible at right tackle, and so-so at best at guard. He doesn't move very well, and doesn't have the best football IQ. The Rams already have Goldberg, Gorin, Fry, and Setterstrom at depth positions. (Although Setterstrom could end up the starting center.)
2.) There really wasn't much at DE in free agency.
3.) I think your basic evaluation of the importance of draft picks is very similar to the Rams' thinking _ and probably most teams' thinking for that matter.
Chris: Jim:
What are the chances the Rams can land D'Angelo Hall from the Falcons (I read that at present, at least, a deal with the Raiders is not imminent) at corner? I was also hoping they'd make a play for Lorenzo Neal at FB once the Chargers released him, and look at increasing size at LB. Do you foresee any of these moves (or moves like these) happening in free-agency or will they address them in the draft (or not at all for this season)?
Jim Thomas: As you probably know by now the Hall deal looks like it's finalized with the Raiders.
As for Neal. What is he? 37. If he still has anything left, the Rams should look into it. I've always had a great respect for him.
At LB, Chillar has some size, and is close to making a decision.
Mike: How about a 4th round pick for Laverneus Coles?
Jim Thomas: I'd be all for it. But I haven't heard his name mentioned at Rams Park.
Brian: Jim,
Good Afternoon, hope you are doing well. I know the Rams where are the pro day of Jake Long and had dinner with him the night before his Pro day. I know allot of people are down on Pace, personally I think he will bounce back nicely and continue to be an elite tackle for at least three more years. Having said that, I think drafting Jake would be a great move as it would really bolster the O-line. My question to you is do you think they would (A.) draft Jake and (B.) do you think he would be willing to play right guard and (C.) do you think he could play right guard, seeing that we just signed Bell to play left guard or is there a trade on the horizon with one of the current tackles. And in the second round WR or defense?
Jim Thomas: I think the Rams are seriously considering Long. Protecting Bulger (and Green) should be a premium. More than one person in the Rams organization feels that Long could play guard. Barron's contract is up after the '09 season. And there's no guarantee that Paced can stay healthy.
Richard Spittlehouse: Hi Jim,
A few quick questions:
1) If the deal goes through, would Hartwig be a big upgrade on a fit Romberg?
2) In your opinion, will the Rams start next season with a WR corp of Holt, Bennett, Hall, Looker and Stanley?
3) Will Fakhir Brown play for the Rams next season? (Your comments last week suggested that he may be in trouble again!)
4) If the answer to 3) is no. Will the Rams make a serious bid to sign Lito Sheppard?
5) Are the Rams now boxed in to picking a DE with their first draft pick?
6) Will they trade down in the first round, in order to possibly have 2 picks in the second round, allowing them to pick a WR & a CB (two glaring needs)?
Thanks for your time.
Jim Thomas: 1.) I have been told by people familiar with Hartwig's play that he would be a considerable upgrade over Romberg.
2.) No. They will add someone, and right now, it's looking more and more like a receiver in the draft.
3.) For reasons I don't want to get into, I'm not allowed to say too much. Let's just say Brown's status looks precarious.
4.) Sheppards already is under contract, so he would have to be acquired via trade. The team is interested. To what extent, I'm not sure.
5.) Sure looks that way, although I wouldn't rule out OT Jake Long.
6.) I think the Rams wouldn't mind trading down a few spots to possibly pick up DE Vernon Gholston while adding a couple of extra picks. But Gholston has been so good in his workouts that I'm not sure he gets past the Raiders at No. 4 overall.
S. Monkey: Hi JT,
Thanks again for the forum. Any news on the Rams LB situation? It appears we are perfectly fine with Culberson/Draft replacing Chillar, or will he come back? Also, I have heard a rumor Julius Peppers is on the trading block. While I'm sure he'll command a Dwight Freeney sized contract, do the Rams have the ability to sign someone of that caliber giving their current cap situation? I know you can always tweak the numbers, but I didn't know if landing (and overpaying) a big time free agent was possible for us over the next couple years. Are we interested in Justin Hartwig? What about Devon Thomas from MSU, is he a possible WR candidate at #33? Thanks!
Jim Thomas: Chillar is close to making a decision. The Rams are still in it, but I still think his top choice is Arizona.
As for Peppers, I'm sure the Rams are evaluating him, but it's more than a little risky considering his lack of production last season (2 1/2 sacks). You always run the risk of paying for a "name" instead of a player.
The Rams have looked into Hartwig, but are concerned about his injuries. Don't know about Devon Thomas of MSU.
