The Rams beat writer goes one-on-one with readers on Friday from 11 a.m.-noon in a live chat.
Friday, April 4, 2008 11:00 AM CDT
D King: Since the D end from Clemson P Merling is dropping likely to the second round for his sports hernia and not being able to work out before the draft do you see in possibility of the Rams taking Dorsey in the !st ropund and Merling in the 2nd round it kills to birds in one draft with Little possibly being released this time next year. Also what of the rumor Dallas 2 1st round picks and Carpenter for the Rams first round pick that gives them 3 picks of the top 35 plus a last year 1st rounder who is young and talented. Thanks JT
Jim Thomas: Dorsey and Merling would be fine as long as the Rams are convinced Merling would be OK, but under that scenario what would the Rams do about their needs at WR, CB, and OT?
Also--The Dallas trade is still not enough to go all the way up to No. 2.
Jesse: Jim,
Do you really think that the Rams would pick Dorsey at the second spot. That would just improve DT not fill a need. In my opinion Carriker is better on the inside verses the outside. If you ask me Carriker would not be much of an upgrade over James Hall. With that being said it makes way more sense going with Long or Gohlston who cares. Even Jake Long makes more sense than Dorsey. What do you think?
Jim Thomas: Dorsey remains a strong possibility. Haslett really likes the guy and so does Devaney. But I would agree with you that DE fills a greater need; and as I wrote about in today's P-D (Fri., April 4), you can make a case for Jake Long as well.
Taylor from Alberta: I know your probably getting tired of the same questions, but I would like to talk about Dorsey. He needs to be the pick at number 2 if Chris Long is not there. Gholston maybe in the 4 spot or later, but at 2 it has to Dorsey. So let's say that is how it pans out, Dorsey at the 4 or 5 would be even better but not so likely, and we select the DT from LSU. Now he does not solve the outside rusher problem, but he does provide great penetration the middle and would make our DE's better. One other thing to take into account is Dorsey helps us this year and next year when Glover is gone I would assume and Wroten is possibly set walking. Now in round 2 I would love Groves, but there are other needs such as WR and CB. So let's say we take James Hardy at WR and pick the best CB on the board in the 3rd. Next get some help on the O-Line in the 4th at which ever position deems most value, a guy who plays guard and tackle would be nice. In the fifth I have my eyes on another reciever, Marcus Monk. He is coming off an injury riddled campaign and his stock has suffered. He ran in the low 4.4's at his pro-day and looked great in all the drills. He is approximately the same size as Hardy and would give us two huge WR's with 4.4 speed, to Linehan's liking. I am not very confident in Bennett at the moment and would like two WR's and even then hopefully one of these guys will turn out. Finally in the later rounds we take the BPA and fill out the roster. What do you think of Dorsey being the selection if Chris Long is gone and is it feasible that we get Hardy and Monk in the draft?
Jim Thomas: You make very good arguments. And there are some at Rams Park thinking your way on Dorsey. But they still have more than 3 weeks to come to a conclusion. They're not there yet.
Todd W.: Hi Jim,
Does Drew Bennett want to prove himself this year?
What is your thoughts on him, can he be a #2?
Jim Thomas: Sure, Bennett wants to prove himself this year. He seems to be a prideful player and his work ethic seems pretty good to me. I saw him there on the first day of the offseason program nearly 2 weeks ago, so he obviously wants to put the time in.
He was a No. 1 for a while at Tennessee, so I don't think there's any reason why he can't be a No. 2 in St. Louis. Obviously, he's got a lot to prove based on his first season in St. Louis.
dogman: JIM Why do you always go out of your way to trash Drew Bennett..He was hurt last year and once he was healthy they only threw to him a few times..Look at the film and you'll see he was wide open often..He is active in volunteer causes and works hard. Give the guy a break and hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised if they decide to throw more this year.
Jim Thomas: Don't get where you coming from. I don't think I go "out of my way" to "trash" anyone. I just try to be honest to the readers. Bennett had a very disappointing 2007 season in St. Louis. He'll be the first to tell you that. And if he does well next year, I won't be surprised. He'll just be playing to the form he displayed at Tennessee.
Brian from Vegas: Jim,
I remember hearing the old Giants GM, George Young, say, "Always draft a great big man over a great small man, because God only makes a few great big men." I think he was correct. Most of the great NFL teams had outstanding offensive and defensive lineman. The Rams were not 3-13 by accident, their lines were awful. Lets not use a early pick on a wide receiver (see Millen, Matt), or on another developmental cornerback (Wade, Shephard, Bartell, etc) lets take our medicine and rebuild the lines. This is the path to long term success. Use the later picks on wide receiver and cornerback. Sound good to you?
Jim Thomas: I don't think there's any doubt the Rams take a lineman in Round 1, be it defense or offense. But after that all bets are off in Rounds 2-3 (WR and CB will be priorities). But if the Rams don't go with an OT (Jake Long) I could see them taking one in either Rounds 2 or 3. And vice versa, if they take an OT (Long in Round 1).
ramfan njersey: after we take g.dorsey with the first pick. what about sending our 2nd round pick to detroit for roy williams ? i know detroit says he not on the block but they said that about shaun rodgers.
p.s. how does matt millien draft all those wide recievers hire my man mike martz let him bring s.mcdonald and m. furrey and not know martz was going to throw the ball all over the field ? plus they have no runnig back to think of who is any good tell me again why does this man still have a job !!! im not even a lion fan and im upset when is enough enough
Jim Thomas:
Williams, I'm told, has some major head case tendencies. Millen does seem pretty firm on his desire not to trade Williams. But you're right, it wouldn't be the first time a team exec changed his mind on something like that.
It is amazing that Millen keeps his job.
Gabriel to Snow: Hi Jim, I wish I'd have asked you this prior to the owners meeting so you could investigate if need be. We all remember how we lost to the Seahawks a couple years ago due to a loophole in the "10 second run off" rule. If I remember correctly, had that loophole not existed, the Rams win the division with that victory tallied at seasons end. Seattle blundered into benefiting from that rule inadvertently. The problem is having no provision for the runoff due to an illegal formation penalty. I thought Linehan provided a perfect example of why the issue should be addressed when he stated "If out of time outs & needing to stop the clock, I'll just have everyone stand where they are as Ike & Torry run up & hike the ball between them. 5 yard penalty, clock stops, we get another play." I fully expected to see that issue resolved at the next owners meetings. I have been waiting for a rule change or for a coach to use Scotts suggestion, thereby raising the topic again. I don't believe either has happened. Am I just uninformed? Or can I hope for the Rams to use Josh Browns leg to win a Seattle game this year, when Scott purposely uses this loophole to stop the clock with no time outs remaining?
Jim Thomas: The "loophole" still exists, but it's an extreme case. A center has to be in position to snap the ball with time running out, and I believe there's a provision that a certain number of offensive players have to be within the what's called the "tackle" box.
Kiefer: Hi Jim,
What are the chances that F. Brown will not be a Ram next season? Also if he isnt, do you think the Rams will pursue a CB in the early rounds of the draft, or try to trade for L. Sheppard?
What will the Rams DL look like if we draft G. Dorsey?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: Question 1: I'd say greater than 80 percent, although there's a remote chance he'll be there for part of the season.
Question 2: I'm sure the Rams would try both options. But the whole Sheppard things seems odd to the Rams. Yes, Sheppard had some injury problems with Philly, but he has played well for them. Why are the Eagles suddenly trying to dump him?
Question 3: I would guess the starters would be: LDE Little: DT Dorsey; DT Carriker; RDE Hall. Glover and Ryan would come off the bench.
Gabriel to Snow: Why is everyone so enamoured with Gholston? Yes, he is a workout wonder. Workouts don't mean squat once the whistle blows. How many Lawrence Phillips & Jimmy Kennedys must we draft before we learn not to take chances on players with questionable dedication? Especially this year, when the 2nd overall pick may garner aprox. $30 million guaranteed. If they couldn't keep the effort up in a college atmosphere, what are we to expect once that kind of coin is already in their pocket?
Jake had only ONE penalty his entire career! That's incredible! Fred Miller & Alex Barron drew so many false start flags you'd think they were doing jumping jacks at the line of scrimmage! Jake Long is a good pick. As is Chris Long. Even if he struggles, it won't be from lack of effort, & all you can ask of someone is their best effort. Same seems to be true for Dorsey. He is passionate, played hurt, & he can dominate.
So, for me, Gholston only makes sense if we trade out & get an extra player. If no trade, it's either of the Long boys or Dorsey. IMHO any of those 3 will be fine. Where do you stand at this point?
Jim Thomas: Here are the arguments for Gholston.
_ He was much more productive in college than Kennedy.
_ He's a better natural pass rusher than Chris Long.
_ He made Jake Long look bad on a couple of plays when Ohio State played Michigan.
But saying all that, I think the Rams still like Chris Long over Gholston, and there are some at Rams Park who seem to like Jake Long best of all. As I mentioned in an earlier post, they're still sorting all this out.
Nick Ruzicka: I firmly agree after viewing and listening to the critics and scouts on the NFL Network that Glen Dorsey is the Ram's best choice for the number 2 pick due to his ability to play the pass and run equally and very effectivly.Jake Long is a very close second though.I also love the thught of Carricker at DE.Think about it,he's bigger, stronger, and same or a little slower speed wise as Seattle's DE ,Patrick Kearney,.This would also improve our CB problem.
Then go after best OT in the secnd round.
What do you think cause defense wins championships? Hint,NYG,.
Jim Thomas: Is this Nick Ruzicka, or Jim Haslett sending in this post?
David Carriger: Jim , thanx for taking our questions.Let me throw this scenario out on the Rams 1st 3 picks and tell me if you would do it.First round-Dorsey ,2nd round-trade pick to Cincy for Chad Johnson ,3rd round-trade to Philly for Lito Sheppard. If all those options were available, would you pull the trigger ?
Jim Thomas: I wouldn't trade the second-rounder for Chad Johnson. I'd draft a WR instead. But I'd give up the No. 3 for Sheppard. And have no objection taking Dorsey in the first if the Rams are convinced he's OK medically.
frank: Hi Jim wanted to know what you think of the rams wr core know that Bruce has left to sf? I think wr is a very key component for the style of offence that they are trying to run. I think the offence of line, QB, and RB will suffer do teams keying in to the run and blitzing Bolger most of the time do to no wr threat. What you think
Jim Thomas: The Rams need a speed threat at WR, someone who can stretch defenses.
Brad: Jim,
If Miami takes Jake Long instead of Chris Long with the 1st pick, and the Rams have the choice between Glenn Dorsey or Chris Long with the 2nd pick, who would they be leaning towards?
Thanks,
Brad
Jim Thomas: Very interesting. I think that's all being hased out over the next couple of weeks at Rams Park. My sense is that some like Dorsey; and some like Chris Long.
Jason: HI Jim,
The way the Rams have been drafting these past years have much to be desired. Wouldn't it be better that they trade the picks for players that they know that can play in this league. It's a crapshoot with this front office. I still have problems with them drafting DB's every year and not panning out.
And is it the result of Zygmunt and his draft book?
Who will have the final say in the draft room, Zygmunt or Deveney? I still believe Zygmunt will.
Jim Thomas: Trades are hard to pull off. And you just can't give up drafting. That's one of the reasons the Rams hired Devaney to improve their track record there as quickly as possible.
You know the Rams haven't really been clear on who has final say. I think it's going to be a consensus thing. Devaney will have a lot of influence, but so will Linehan and Zygmunt.
smitty: If the rams draft Dorsey what will happen to wroten.
He was such a dominant college player and seems
committed now. It also seems like byrd would be
a good fit in saunders offense. But with all of
the tight ends do you think he make the team.
Jim Thomas: It's put up or shutup time for Wroten. It does seem like the light bulb has come on, but Wroten still has to show it on the field.
The Rams have about had it with Byrd. Too immature, questionable work ethic, and oh by the way, he's facing a trial date in May for his role in a bar scuffle that could result in a league suspension. I'd be very suprised if he's on the team when training camp starts.
Jeremy (Denver): Jim,
For what it's worth these chats are better on Friday since it's not the day after Gordo's chat.
I have a draft question. Any inside information on which WR the Rams hold in high regard for round 2 or 3?
Jim Thomas: During the regular season, Tuesday works better for me for on these chats, because the Rams aren't practicing. During the offseason, we've tried to keep them on Tuesday for the sake of continuity, but it's been kind of a moving target. This week, for example, I was at the owners meetings _ standing in the lobbies much of the time, searching out Rams and league people to talk to _ so it was basically impossible to do this thing until Friday.
I think the Rams have some off-field questions on Indiana's Hardy; there's some serious concerns about the wrist injury of Sweed of Texas; the Rams seem to love DeSean Jackson of Cal (but he might not be around at No. 33); they did watch Manningham closely at his workout when they went to Michigan's pro day _ ostensibly to watch Jake Long.
Jeremy (Denver): Jim,
Have you heard if Julius Peppers is truly on the trade market? I think he'd be a great fit if he is!
Jim Thomas: Haven't heard.
Ruben: Jim,
Thanks for taking my question. With the probability of Miami taking Chris Long, I believe the Rams should take a healthy Dorsey or Jake Long if Dorsey does not medically check out. It is apparent that the Rams are 8-8 this season at best and building for the future has to be the goal. The question now is what to do with the 2nd round pick. Do you think there will be anyone in the 2nd round that should/would prevent the Rams from trading down several spots to pick up more picks? Or do the Rams seriously consider using the 3rd rd. pick & trade back into the 1st?
Jim Thomas: Unless there's some medical concerns on Dorsey (and right now I think the Rams are satisfied), I think the Rams would be very happy to get either Long or Dorsey at No. 2 overall.
I don't see them trading the No. 2 pick. It's No. 33 overall, practically a first-round pick, and I can say with near certainty that they'll be at least a few players still on the Rams' board at that time that the Rams have rated with a first-round grade.
Wayne: Jim,
how is the working relationship between Devaney and Tony Softi? How do thier roles differ in personnel decision making? Also, any insight who the Rams prefer in the first round indepoendent of what the Dolphins might do?
Jim Thomas: To my knowledge, Devaney and Softli are getting along fine. To my knowledge Softli is now being used almost exclusively on college stuff. Devaney has much more say in decision-making.
As for the first round pick, as I mentioned before, that's all still being hashed out. There are those in the building who like Chris Long, those who like Jake Long, those who like Dorsey.
Dejan Prole: Do Rams have any interest in Takeo Spikes?
Any news about trade down for Rams #2 overall pick in this april's draft?
Greetings from Serbia Rams Fans!
Jim Thomas: Haven't detected any interest in Spikes.
Nothing happening on a trade down at the moment; I think the Rams are expecting that to develop more on draft day.
Good to hear from you. Linehan's wife is of Croatian descent. Is that a problem?
Buzz: Jim,
Would it be fair to compare Glenn Dorsey to La'Roi Glover in his prime? I believe Glover was in that 8-10 sack range for a few years. And does it matter where the sacks come from, as long as we get them? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Interesting comparison. I think Dorsey is heavier, bulkier than Glover in his prime. And that Glover may have been a tad quicker. But I haven't seen Dorsey enough to say for sure. And no, I'd say it doesn't matter where the sacks come from. If Dorsey is getting 8 to 10 sacks inside, that means the opposing line can't concentrate so much on the DEs.
YoMurphy: Hi Jim,
I am curious about your article concerning putting radio receivers in the helmets of defensive players. As of right now, I have not heard that it has officially passed.
Personally, I see a lot of negatives about this. It seems like it takes the need for a middle linebacker or strong safety to have "football IQ" ...to read the opposing offense and make changes, have a nose for the ball etc. Instead, right before the play, a desk jockey up in a booth with a God's eye view of the field and who is likely a film geek can be lending his knowledge to the Linebacker. The truly great defensive field generals (LT, Ray Lewis, Mike Singletary, London Fletcher :) who have had the innate ability to anticipate what an offense is doing, might be marginalized by radios in the helmets of top "physical specimen" types who can spend all their time lifting weights, and maybe spend less time studying film. I equate it to a nerd who is hired to get the jock through geometry by whispering "3.14" in his ear during the test. I realize guys in the booth are not clairvoyant, but I just think this new scenario takes away a quality I admire in the best defensive football players.
Jim Thomas: As you've probably seen by now, the measure did pass (25-7), with the Rams voting no. There's no doubt it takes some of the instinct out of the game, but the instinct of a linebacker still comes into play once the ball is snapped.
I think the defense all along has felt if the offensive team gets to communicate via coach's headset into the QBs helmet, the defense should have the same right. This just evens up the technology. But remember, the communication system, whether it's on offense or defense, cuts off with 15 seconds left on the play clock. What's to stop an offense, from shuttling in entirely different personnel after the 15-second cutoff. That could make the defensive call useless.
Gabriel to Snow: They remove the force out rule, fine. Why does the NFL never consider the college style one foot in for a completion rule? It's even easier to call & helps promote offensive football, which they seem to covet. Will it ever be considered? What are your feelings on it?
Jim Thomas: Agreed. And you're right, the NFL is obsessed with keeping scoring at a certain level. That's why this rule change is curious because it favors the defense. Surprisingly, though, Linehan with his offensive background was in favor of the rule change because it leaves less interpretation up to the officials.
TD51: Scen 1) Jake goes #1, we go Chris L or any chance Dorsey?
2) Ryan goes 1 (I think not likely), who do Rams take?
3) Chris L goes 1 - Rams take J Long or Dorsey?
Also, do you see the Rams getting very aggressive soon after the draft to lock in S Jackson and what do you believe is likely timeframe that he gets locked in? Do you anticipate this deal gets done or Jackson waiting to see what the market offers after the season?
Thanks!
Jim Thomas: As I've mentioned earlier, this is all still under discussion at the Park. I've had high-ranking people tell at Rams Park who swear by Dorsey. Others (in the building) are convinced that the Rams are taking Jake Long. Still others think that Chris Long makes the most sense.
Don't know the time frame on Jackson. Ideally, the Rams would like to get it done before training camp starts. But even if nothing happens all next season, remember, the Rams still have the franchise tag at their disposal.
Faris Chehabi: Is there any chance that the Rams are going to make the trade for Lito Sheppard? What have you heard on that? Are there any other small free agents the Rams are looking at? Any other trades the Rams have been interested about? Also which 2nd round receiver do the Rams seem to have the most interest in? And what 2nd round cornerback do the Rams have interest in? Thanks so much for answering my questions. I'm a die hard Rams fan from Dallas, TX.
Jim Thomas: Rams seem a little wary on Sheppard for reasons I discussed in an earlier post. My sense is there's no way they give up their first_ or second-round picks for Sheppard.
Rams are sniffing around on the trade front. Nothing hot and heavy I'm aware of. They do seem to be monitoring the F. Washington situation _ the CB from Oakland.
I've given my thoughts on 2nd-round WRs earlier. Not sure on 2nd-round CBs yet.
As for remaining free agents, it's very slim pickings at this point. Although I am wondering about someone like LB Orlando Huff as a depth signing. I believe he's still out there.
zn2003: Hello. I love these live chats---I wish you had been doing them for years. Anyway. In your opinion, is Linehan up to the task of generally being in charge of 2 huge personalities like Haslett and Saunders? Or are there potential problems there?
Jim Thomas: We're about to find out. So far, it's worked out OK. Linehan is giving Haslett and Saunders lots of leeway. But we're a long way from the heat of a game, or the aftermath of a tough loss, aren't we?
bob: It appears that we now have the most clueless owner in the NFL. This cannot be good. It is no wonder that the other owners and the league office do not take us seriously.
Jim Thomas: More clueless than Mike Brown? Bill Bidwill? Please.
mick: for value i get the impression you would draft dorsey if c.long is off the board. But how much do you think the need plays into this?
I read linehan saying that he has our two DE's set, and is looking for a young pass rusher to add. he listed this as his fourth need, behind OT, WR and CB....should we look at this as a smokescreen, or a sign the rams want little and hall to start and will look for a DE in rounds 3-5?
Jim Thomas: When Linehan made those comments at the owners meetings _ I was sitting two feet away from him _ he made it a point to say that the needs "weren't necesarily in that order," so I think you're reading too much into that.
Damien Domingo: Do you think Linehan will do something simiar to what seemed to work in the "Greatest Show on Turf" days for preseason? For the first preseason game, they played the starters for a little over one quarter, the second game for over a a half, the third game for three quarters, and the last game they would play for one quarter and the "bubble" players would play the remainder of the game.
There were the usual nicks and bruises but by the time the season started, they hit the field in full stride. The past two seasons, they never really seemed to gel at crucial times for the first few games and that set the tone for "losing" the season. Penalties at crucial times, turnovers, missed tackles, etc. It also probably contributed to so many injuries to the starters as they were playing in preseason form against teams that were in full stride. What do you think?
Thanks!
Damien Domingo
Kapolei, Hawaii
Jim Thomas: He hasn't worked out all the details in his head; in fact, he hadn't even discussed it with his staff.
But almost any scenario would be better than last season, particularly for the offense. Steven Jackson, remember, had two touches in the preseason and then suffered two costly fumbles in the regular-season opener that turned the tide against Carolina.
There's always that fine line between exposing players to injury, but getting them ready for the real thing in September. I think Linehan finally has come to the conclusion that he needs these guys getting jostled around a little bit in preseason play.
Steve: Jim
Thanks again for doing this.
Why did the NFL feel the need to make this rule change, as you wrote:
"League owners approved a measure changing the forceout rule on pass receptions. Under the new rule, in almost all instances, a player who catches a pass must come down with both feet in bounds for the play to be ruled a completion _ even if he’s shoved out of bounds by a defender"
What problem is this supposed to fix? Isn't this rule just going to make defenders just shove receivers out of bounds all the time, thus hurting the out type routes the Rams like?
Steve
Jim Thomas: Steve, it's certainly a rule that helps the defense. But what it's designed to elimnate is the interpretation by officials that frequently seem to get them in trouble. The game moves too fast for officials to have to make snap judgments like that. The rule change makes it more clear cut. Unless a receiver is literally carried out of bounds by a defender, he must have two feet in bounds.
Rich: Hey Jim,
On the Rams draft, a lot of focus has been on both sides of the line and rightly so.
However, I think a case can be made for rebuilding the Rams WR corp. There is a pretty big drop off in talent after starters Holt and Bennett.
Do you see the Rams spending a high pick on a WR?
Thanks for spending the time and effort for this forum.
Jim Thomas: I think Linehan would like to take a WR at the top of Round 2.
S. Monkey: Hi JT,
Quick word association game. If the Dolphins pick A.), the Rams pick B.)
1. A - Chris Long
2. A - Jake Long
3. A - Glenn Dorsey
4. A - Vernon Gholston
1. B -
2. B -
3. B -
4. B -
Jim Thomas: This is just me, and not based on what the Rams are thinking.
1.) _ Jake Long
2.) _ Chris Long
3.) _ Chris Long
4.) _ Chris Long
Jeff: I've always felt that the last time the Rams had an impact linebacker and defensive leader both on the field and in the clubhouse was London Fletcher. Since his departure the Rams D has always been mediocre at best. Curious what your thoughts are on why they have tended to neglect this need either through the draft or free agency year after year?
Jeff
Eureka, CA
Jim Thomas: Let's see: They've spent $33 million on Witherpoon; $24 millon on Tinoisamoa. I wouldn't call that neglet.
Jason: Hey Jim, In my opinion,Bartell is just average. Average at best. The Rams secondary needs a complete makeover. Is there any possibility the Rams make a trade with Dallas for BOTH their first round picks and a player? We all know who Dallas wants (McFadden). The Rams need Players that can start right away,if the Rams did this they would have the Dallas's 22nd overall and 28 overall pick, then the Rams 33rd pick in the 2nd round, your thoughts? Thanks
Jim Thomas: Dallas' first-round picks are w-a-a-y to low to be swapped straight up for a No. 2 overall pick. So it would have to be a heck of a player as well as those two first rounders.
Reading Ram: My question is a little more general then most but I have been wondering for a while and wanting to ask it. This is by anyone's measure a make or break year for Linehan. The Rams as a team have been steadly declining since we wong the superbowl, lost the next one and then each year has been progressivly worse. This downward slide culminated this past year with our 3 win season. Do you think that with the changes we have made to OC and other staff as well as our players currently arte going to be able to turn this around and compete? I like alot of the changes we have made but I am far from convinced that we can trun this slide around and strike fear back into the hearts of the likes of the seachickens, niners and birdies.
And secondly, why oh why would we let go of the likes of Macdonald and Curtis to pick up a left over from the Titans. It seems like whenever a player is wrapping up a decent carrer on the titans we somehow end up with them coming over to stink up the Rams field. Bennett could not catch a cold in the sick ward of the CDC....I am semi suprised that we are not trying for pacman, do we have some special connection to the Titans...Becht, Bennett...Bell etc and they are in our training camp discussions.
Thanks!
Reading Ram
Jim Thomas: I too wonder if the Rams have done enough. They need a heck of a draft and much better health to be dramatically improved in '08.
Plain and simple, Curtis wanted to go somewhere to be a starter. That was never going to be the case as long as Bruce and Holt were around in St. Louis. Of course, had he known the Rams were going to offer Bennett $30 million to replace him, he probably would have stayed for $30M.
Also, Becht is from Tampa Bay, not Tennessee.
Ken M: Jim first time poster long time rams fan since 63. Grew up in So Cal. Currently live in CT so I don't care where they live hope they stay in ST Louis. I read a lot grumbeling about how bad the dome is after 13 years is it really that bad? Have not seen a rams game in person since early 90's thinking of makeing a trip in the 09 season.
Even though I am not thrilled with SL as the coach I do like the way the team is structure depending how much control they give Deavany (probably butcherd that). I can remember after the 99SB a post dispatch beat writer wrote the rams were good for the long haul with Armory making the Football decisions and JZ taking care of the contracts. I am hoping they go back to this format and make it work. I like the moderation they have showed in FA with the hope they build through the draft. Any thoughts or coments?
Jim Thomas: The dome looks great from the outside, and like a dark basement from the inside. They should have designed it to let some light inside. The sound system leaves a lot to be desired, and there are way too many commercials in between plays. That being said, there were very few complaints during the Greatest Show on Turf days.
As for the front office, some continuity would be good. I think if Devaney had more say in personnel matters, and Zygmunt stuck more to contracts, the team would be better over the long haul. We'll see how it works out.
pdub: Jim..
Last year Dante Hall was used as the teams 4th wide receiver. Do you see new offensive coordinator Al Saunders using Hall in the same manner this season? Since Hall played under Saunders in KC, I'm sure it would be tempting. But I'd think that the Rams would be better off using/developing some of their other WR talent and using Hall situationally, rather than regularly at receiver. Seems to me the Rams need his kick-return talents/skills way more than they need him lining up at wide receiver.
Jim Thomas: I see Hall as a situational receiver (2nd) and kick-returner (1st). Most of all, he needs to stay healthy.
jesus o: jim hello
i want the rams to take Ghoulston. the giants showed what a great passrush can do. He can compliment Little well dont you think?
Jim Thomas: I think Gholston is in the mix only if the Rams trade down a couple of spots.
Ricky Shah: Is there any chance that the rams can upgrade their receiving corp by trading for Chad Johnson? I would love to give up a first round pick if it means bringing "ocho cinco" to St. Louis. We need to bring some big name players back to St. Louis and put our team back on the map.
Jim Thomas: I didn't realize Johnson had put Cincy _ one playoff berth in forever _ on the map.
dominic: Hi Jim:
Personal question for you...Are you planning on doing a football show with Bernie and Randy each week anytime soon? And when you are on,do you get paid?If not,you most definitely should be!
And do you sense a different type of atmosphere out at rams park with the new hires and people in charge?
And as always I am a huge proponet of trading down either with our 1st or 2nd pick for more draft choices.....we need players.Good players! We appreciate you!
Jim Thomas: Don't know when I'll spend an hour with them again (as I did the past two Fridays). They're great to work with. Yes, I am paid by the station.
I do think the atmosphere has improved at Rams Park.
As for trading down, I get the strong sense the Rams don't want to trade down far if they do.
Chris: Jim:
Great column and thanks for answering our long-suffering Rams questions!
I have questions about the O-line and our receiver corps: If the Rams draft Dorsey, what does the line look like? Does Carriker slide over to LDE and anchor against the run? If so, where does that leave Ryan + Glover, and does Little now become an OLB?
On the receiver front, is a trade likely (or even possible) that would help us, or will we end up relying on our current squad and a starting-caliber WR from the draft?
Jim Thomas: With James Hall back, I think Carriker still plays DT in the base defense with Dorsey. (Which would be a pretty potent DT combo, eh?) But I still think Carriker would slide over to end, particularly on some run downs. I think the Rams would like to play Glover less, he's nearing the end, and would be more effective getting 25 plays a game rather than 50.
As for WR, I don't see much happening on the trade front right now.
bfulton: I know there isn't much left in the free agent market at this point, but will the Rams be completely inactive until the draft at this point? If they will pursue free agents, are there any positions they are looking at in particular?
Jim Thomas: With only 5 LBs under contract, that might be a position where the Rams would look at somebody. They usually keep seven on their 53-man roster.
Dustin: Jim:
I believe a smart move would be to draft a QB "of the future"; do you believe that the Rams will do that this year? If yes, which area of the draft? and who?
Jim Thomas: If you saw one of my on-line only notebooks this year, Linehan seems committed to keeping 3 QBs on the 53-man roster, and said he would consider drafting one. They have shown interest in Delaware's Flacco _ I believe he's coming in for a pre-draft visit. But it looks like Flacco may not make it out of the second round, which given the team's many other needs I think would be way too high. I'm thinking 4th, 5th, or 6th round for a QB.
Jared: Hey Jim,
Whats the deal with the Rams not caring a whole lot about the SS situation and Corey Chavous? Personally, I don't think he is reliable enough to be starting in our secondary though he leadership qualities are great.
Also, do you know if the Rams plan on having Bennett start along with Holt then drafting a slot, or are they confident in Hagans and Stanley to share the slot and draft some depth. Thanks
Jim Thomas: Chavous missed more tackles than usual and had some injury problems last year as well, but I think the Rams feel they have more pressing needs elsewhere. We'll see.
Holt and Bennett are the starters. As I mentioned earlier, Linehan would like to draft a fast prospect in Rounds 2 or 3.
Cincy Ram: Hello Jim, every time I hear someone say the Rams should take DT Dorsey and move Adam Carriker outside, I think they are making a big mistake. For one Dorsey could take up some of the slake while Carriker completely heals, and when he does, they could be one heck of a tandem inside.Carriker's injury was bad and is going to set him back, not to mention the Rams need a big time pass rusher at DE and that is not Carriker. What's your take ?
Jim Thomas: If the Rams draft Dorsey and Carriker is healthy, they would both start at DT in the base defense.
Justin Me: 1) Did Sedrick Ellis do enough at his pro day to warrant consideration at the Rams pick?
2) Is it just me or wouldn't it be a shame to draft Jake Long and start him at RG at the expense of Richie Incognito who might be one of the teams better Olinemen??
Jim Thomas: I haven't gotten any feedback from the Rams on Ellis' pro day.
Incognito needs to stay healthy. But remember, he could always be moved back to center if Long comes in and plays guard.
Frank C: What is Linehan smoking? Longer practices for starters..we need to take care of the Paces, Holts, Bulger..etc..? He should have learned from last season what injuries do to a team..
He should ask Vermeil what happened when he took it easy...Superbowl...
Here comes another long season..
Frank in Richmond VA
Jim Thomas: Actually, the "easier" practices by Vermeil were tougher than anything Linehan has done with the Rams.
And can you say definitely that tough practices in camp and more playing time by starters in the preseason lead to more injuries? The Rams went easy on the their starters (at least on offense) in the preaseason last year, and look at all the injuries in the regular season.
Again, it's all relative. I think the practice will be only slightly longer, to get in a little more 11-on-11 work. In the preseason games, I don't think the starters will be playing into the 3rd quarter three games in a row, either.
Greg Scott: Jim, Is there a remote possability the rams will pic up Will Franklin in the draft. I think this kid can be really good. He's got good hands and he runs routes as good as any reciever in the draft, and they could probrobly get him in the 3rd round.
Jim Thomas: There must be some genuine interest in Franklin, because as I reported several days ago, the Rams are bringing him in for a pre-draft visit later this month.
Scott Wagner: Do you see the Rams looking for more veteran help @ WR? Call me crazy but an aging Torry Holt, a one-dimensional Drew Bennett and an utterly mediocre Reche Caldwell won't exactly have opposing secondary coaches losing sleep. Have the Rams entertained a deal for Chad Johnson?
Jim Thomas: Personally Chad Johnson does nothing for me. He's the ultimate "me-first" player. What have the Bengals won with him? (Saying that, I don't know if the Rams are interested or not.)
But there's no doubt the Rams are looking for help at WR, and realize they need somebody else in the mix.
Taylor from Alberta: I would like to know your opinion on this comparison. Marcus Monk is this years' Marques Colston. Both very large and athletic recievers who run well. Also I forget what round Colston was taken in, but Monk might be available in the fifth.
Jim Thomas: Colston was taken in the 7th; don't know enough about Monk.
Gabriel to Snow: After reading Bill Coat's article today, I was very encouraged by Bulgers attitude & his comments about Saunders, Shea & even Trent Green. It seems that respect for the training process & the offensive philosophy is very healthy in Ram land. I haven't heard this kind of respect & belief in the offensive coaches since Mad Mike. I even get the impression they believe in Al's aggressive but more balanced attack over Mikes often one dimensional play calling. Is it just wishful thinking? Or has the addition of Saunders, Shea, etc., already started to change the players mindsets in a tangible & positive way?
Jim Thomas: There's no doubt that Saunders and Shea have a tremendous amount of street cred with the players, particularly Bulger and the WRs. Saunders' offenses in Kansas City where much more balanced, yet still aggressive.
Kiefer: How much will the additions of Saunders and Shea effect Bulger? Will he get the 2007 season completely behind him?
Can Linehan really be serious about trading for Birk AND drafting J. Long?
Jim Thomas: I think the additions will help Bulger greatly.
The surest way to put '07 behind him, is a fast start _ starting with the preseason.
The Birk part in the story you're referring to was more speculation on my point _ something I usually don't like to do in print. But the Rams do like Birk. Do you feel comfortable with some combo of Romberg and Setterstrom at center in '08? Can we be certain that Pace will stay healthy?
jerry: Jim,
The Rams needs are so great in so many positions, how can they even speek of drafing long , an OT, as a replacement for Pace, which hopefully will be a couple of years away? I think that talk is a bluff. If the Rams don't take a D end or lineman with the 2nd pick, then I give up on them.
jerry
Jim Thomas: I think what Linehan is contemplating is putting Long at RT.
After what we saw at the tackle position last season _ Pace hurt, and Barron so-so _ does that scenario really seem that far-fetched to you?
don muenz: Good morning, Jim.
With all of the uncertainty as to what the Rams will do with the second pick, in your opinion, what should they do?
Thank you.
don in columbus
Jim Thomas: I know this sounds like hedging, but I could live with either Long or Dorsey. I think they all would improve the club (presuming Dorsey is OK medically).
bronko26: Jim,
What do think of the RAMS drafting Jake Long and trying to trade Barron for an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick?
thanks
Jim Thomas: Sounds very interesting to me.
Chicago Ram's Fan: Chris Long, Jake Long or Glenn Dorsey whomever it may be, do you see this player making an impact in the 2008 season?
Jim Thomas: Yes on those three, presuming they come to camp on time _ or very close to on time _ and there are no serious healthy concerns with Dorsey.
Faris Chehabi: Is there any chance the Rams will go after Chris Henry, recently released by the Bengals? He will probably come cheap considering his arrest and we could really use his speed. He was a deep threat last year and teams were having to cover all 3 of the Bengals great WR's. What do you think?
Jim Thomas: Sure. Why not try to assemble an entire team of under-achieving players who excel in off-the-field problems?
den-the-coach: Thank you for the forum. My question pertains to who you think will be the Rams first two selections if Chris Long is off the board. I understand there are many factors, but I am asking for your gut as to who the Rams will select with their firt two picks in the 2008 NFL draft? Dorsey, Gholston or Long perhaps? And then will they follow that selection with a WR in round two? Inquiring minds would like to know your feeling on this. Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Pls. see earlier posts.
Faris Chehabi: Do you think the Rams will finally use Randy McMichael in the passing game? This guy was so good with Miami and made great catches and looked just like a WR. I really hope Saunders realizes this and uses him in the offense. Also, what is Saunders offense going to be like. Pass friendly, run friendly, balanced, uses TE, 3-WR? What should we expect from St. Louis. Thanks so much.
Jim Thomas: I'm sure Saunders would like to get him more involved.
Faris Chehabi: Is there really a chance that Steven Jackson might not come to the Rams? We really need to re-sign him soon! He got 2,300 yards from scrimmege. What have you heard on that? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: I haven't heard anything about a holdout. Jackson is under contract. And I believe he was "on campus" for the first day of the offseason program.
mr. starks: What do you think the chances are in the near future of an uncapped season or a lockout? Lets hope the chances aren't very good because either one would ruin football.
Jim Thomas: I seriously doubt it. The owners and players are making too much money to kill the golden goose. And the owners only have themselves to blame about the current contract. After all, they approved it, in near-unanimous fashion.
Rams fan in RI: Jim,
Thanks for taking this time every week.
Here is my question. With the signing of Bell at guard, and the talk of getting possibly long or a later round tackle in the draft, do you see this as a make or break year for Barron? Does he have one or two years on his contract. If he continues to get flagged every game, killing drives and just generally seeming not to have his head in the game, will they just let him leave at the end of his contract? I think he has talent, but I, like many others who I have read, don't think his heart is in it.
Thanks again for taking all of our redundant questions.
Jim Thomas: Sure it's a make or break year. Although his penalties decreased some in 07, I believe he's still the most penalized player in the league over the past three seasons combined. Barron has two years left on his contract. I think the coaching staff is reaching the point where they are getting very frustrated with Barron. They keep waiting for him to take that next step as a player, and it just hasn't happened.
bash-on: In reading your article in today's Post-Dispatch about our `O'-line and the possibility of drafting Jake Long, you mention the possibility, (among many), that we might have to trade Barron if we took Long. How's Minnesota's tackle situation? Anything is possible, so how about a draft day trade of Barron for Matt Burk?
Bash-On Regardless
(Good article, by-the-way)
Jim Thomas: Don't know what the Vikings have at tackle, so I'll have to look into it.
But since you're on the subject, how about Barron for Lito Sheppard?
Sam from New Jersey: Jim, I am a 35 year Ram's fan, I know this team has many needs, the defense looked like they were playing two hand touch, the special teams were anything but special, and of course the offensive line was Swiss cheese. The team appears to be extremely soft, manhandled by opponents at EVERY level.
Do you think this team has become a reflection of Marc Bulger, who for lack of a better word has to be one of the wimpiest quarterbacks in the league. I respect that he plays hurt, but he gets injured by the slightest contact. He looks like he has never touched a weight in his life. His arms are so skinny they should force him to wear a long sleeve shirt. When Bulger does go down I don't think Green will last too long.
My question is what are the Rams going to do to MAN-UP? Is there a decent QB out there in round 4 worth picking?
Jim Thomas: Yeah, what a wuss! The sissy played for a month with two broken ribs. Look at the tape of the first game of '07 against San Francisco (Game No. 2 of the season). Those weren't glancing blows.
Matt: New NFL Rule: “Any direct snap from center that is untouched by the quarterback now will be a live ball.” Basically, does this mean that now a center can do a direct snap to a running back or a wide receiver like they do all the time in college? If not then can you please clarify this rule for me?
Jim Thomas: The center could always direct snap to a running back or wide receiver. It happens every once in a while on trick plays.
The change in the rule simply changes it to a live ball (like a fumble). Before the play was whistled dead and the offense was charged with a false start penalty.
Ron: Jim - I've seen quite a bit written about Brown's status given his positive drug test. On a 1-10 scale, with one being "he's gone" to ten being near-complete confidence he will he will be on the roster in December, what number would be your best guess?
Thank you.
Jim Thomas: I would say (2).
Ron: Jim - If the Rams are willing to pay fair market value, do you think Steven Jackson will re-sign? I would imagine he would pursue the best financial package, but is he at least relatively happy as a Ram?
Thank you.
Jim Thomas: I do think he's relatively healthy as a Ram. And I do think he'll re-sign if he's given a "fair market value contract."
Ray R.: Jim,
Lots of buzz lately about Miami taking Jake Long #1. Would the Rams then take Chris Long? I'm still of the opinion to trade down with someone who covets McFadden or Ryan, and get a high extra pick. Still get an impact defensive player like Rivers, Ellis, or Ghoulston.
Jim Thomas: If Jake Long goes to Miami, I think it's either Chris Long or Dorsey. But the trade-down scenario is in play if it's only a few spots down.
Armen Dacity: Jim,
Rank these players in order of likelihood of being on the opening day roster in 2008: Hagans, Berlin, Wroten, Byrd and F.Brown.
Jim Thomas: Nice question.
1.) Wroten; 2.) Hagans; 3.) Berlin; and 5.) (tie) Brown and Byrd.
Mike: Jim - Have you spoken with Steven Jackson to get his thoughts on the "no long hair" rule being proposed by the Cheifs? I know he has been "outspoken" about the choice of music played at the dome and would surely have an opinion about having to keep his hair tucked up under his helmet. lol
Jim Thomas: Haven't talked to Steven. I just got back in town Thursday night from the owners meetings. But I'd be very interested in his thoughts (even though the measure was tabled).
Curt: Jim,
I've seen you post before that the Rams are 'standing pat' at Safety. Chavous cannot stay with receivers any more and misses way too many tackles. Does that mean they will not be addressing the S position in the draft, at least in the first 5 rounds?
Jim Thomas: I've been wrong before, but I don't see them going safety in the early rounds. That's my sense.
Mike: It looks as though the Rams will inevitably select a Dlinemen with their first pick. Do you think it makes the most sense to use their second pick on a CB and then take a Will Franklin-type WR with their third? Is this the thinking at Rams Park?
Jim Thomas: If the Rams go d-lineman, I think some combo of WR, CB, and OT, are in play in Rounds 2-3.
chris: Hey Jim,
I heard a month or so back when you were on The Roll Home on team 1380 that the Rams had interest in trading for Michael Clayton, from the T.B. Bucs. Have you heard anything more on this, we sure need so help at wideout.
Jim Thomas: I have heard nothing on this at Rams Park. But I'll try to check.
Justin Trout: Hey Jim!
Why is are all these people talking about Gholston being so great and wanting to take him at #2? Yeah he had unbelievable numbers from the workouts, but he was really inconsistant in his career at Ohio St. I don't see him being a great fit for the Rams defensive scheme of a 4-3. Dorsey has never faltered from the high level of play and attitude towards the game, but people say that we shouldn't pick him b/c of the past picks that didn't work out for us. So, let me put it out there like this... the Fins take Chris Long #1, we take Dorsey at #2, and move Carriker to the DE(spot that he played in college)how is that a bad thing?
Thanks
Justin Trout
Jim Thomas: No it's not a bad thing. But if the Rams take Dorsey, he and Carriker become the starting DTs.
Justin Trout: Hey Jim!
So how do you see Chris Long compared to Carriker at DE? It seems like both of them have that same motor that doesn't quit and skills to play the game. I say that b/c it seem that the Dolphins are going to take C. Long at #1 and I feel we should take Dorsey over J. Long or Gholston. So I am wondering how those two compare to see if we are really losing anything by moving Carriker to the DE and having a GREAT player like Dorsey at the DT... what is your take?
Thanks for all the info!
Justin Trout
Jim Thomas: Long is about 25 pounds smaller and quicker than Carriker.
Ron W: Jim,
With the release of Bruce, Curtis, Furrey, and McDonald over the last two years WR seems to be a weakness now instead of strength. Do you think the Rams could have handled this better and what do you see the Rams doing to address the WR position in the draft?
Jim Thomas: Bruce is the only player among the four you mentioned who was released. The others left as unrestricted free agents. Sure the Rams could've handled it better. I think they expected to lose Curtis or McDonald last offseason, but not Curtis AND McDonald. As for Bruce, it's fine for the Rams to think that his skills are declining and that they could do better _ but now they have to actually do better at receiver. So far they've signed Reche Caldwell.
Ram Colors: Jim, do you think with the large number of players that never saw the field last year, do you think that the roster changes are done?
Jim Thomas: Not at all. Free agency is all but over, but the Rams are always looking.
hp: Jimbo, it doesn't matter where u draft, it's all a crapshoot. with that said, there really isn't a player worthy of the #2 overall pick, esp considering the chunk of change the rams are going to have to pay. am i incorrect? also, have u heard any talk of jake long being another tony mandarich (one of biggest draft busts ever, also a #2 overall pick, and from neighboring mich state u?
Jim Thomas: I don't think anyone at Rams Park feels that Jake Long is anything close to being the next Tony Mandarich.
My sense is the Rams feel there are six or seven elite level players in this draft, so I don't seem them moving that many spaces down if they trade down.
That's it for today. I've got to go. See you next week.
