Rams writer Jim Thomas goes one-on-one with readers at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a live chat.

St. Lou Angeles of Cleveland: Jim, Karney seems to be injury prone. Gado has cartilage problems in his ribs. Seeing that Jerome Johnson is no longer around, who would play fullback if neither player could play? Also, Johnson seemed to have good size, very good speed and soft hands, it seems he caught everything thrown his way, although I thought his blocking was substandard and his running nondescript. I gave him a flier because it's a new position for him and I'm assuming he will be on the practice squad. What did you notice about him, if anything? What do the rams think he needs to work on? Do the rams think they have found a future starter or just a camp body for next years training camp?
Jim Thomas: Good question on the fullbacks. Karney did practice Monday; so did Gado. But if both went down in Seattle, I don't know who the lead blocker would be. Maybe Fells or Bajema, who occasionally line up in the backfield. As for Johnson, he showed some potential, but make a position switch from defense (in college) to offense in the NFL is almost unheard of. Johnson is not on the practice squad.
Jumbo J: Hello again Jim.
Should Leonard Little be traded now while he still has value? Get an additional pick for next year. I am sure the Bears or another 4-3 team could use him.
Let's face it. The Rams won't make the playoffs this year. Since the overhaul has already begun, let Adeyanju and CJ Ah You take his place. Both of those guys proved to have good motors. In my opinion Adeyanju plays the run better than Little anyway.
Your thoughts...
Jim Thomas: Leonard Little is easily the Rams' best pass rusher; that's why he's still on the roster. But at age 34 and already hinting at retirement after this season, I'm not sure he'd have much trade value.
Matt-New Smyrna Beach Florida: Jim,
Do you see opening day as a high scoring affair or more of a run, run, run and grind it out lower scoring game?
I look forward to your game breakdown. I am a big fan of you work,
Thanks,
Matt
Jim Thomas: There's really no way to predict. There's always some uncertainty about opening day anyway, and that's particularly true with two new head coaches
Jumbo J: Hey Jim,
I wanted to get your opinion on potential pick ups...
RB-Kory Sheets, Peerman, Ian Johnson, Chauncey W... all rookies, I know.
OL-Any interest in Meredith, Pashos.
DB-Ikegwuono (PHI)
LB-Got to be something better than our reserves...
WR-Keep the kids to develop.
Any other areas or players you are aware of?
Jim Thomas: Here's the players who were in for workouts today at Rams Park: RBs DeShaun Foster, Gary Russell, and (St. Louisan) Carey Davis, who's a fullback/halfback. Two LBs _ Tank Daniels and David Herron. At the moment, there appears to be no interest in WR Greg Lewis.
Kevin: What are the chances the Rams will pursue either Matt Jones, Dominic Rhodes or Warrick Dunn to shore up the WR and/or RB depth respectively? I realize Jones comes with off the field issues. Rhodes has returned kicks in the past, which in my estimation would make him an upgrade over Darby in several categories. I don't think Darby showed much of anything in the preseason. Dunn could be a good change of pace 3rd down guy that could compliment Jackson and/or spell him from time to time.
Jim Thomas: I don't think any of those players are on the Rams' radar.
bigramfan1966: Jim,
With the recent cuts it seems we are looking to the waiver wire for a couple more guys. Have you heard of anyone the Rams might be targeting especially in the WR or RB areas?
Jim Thomas: RBs DeShaun Foster and Gary Russell were in for workouts today; so was FB/RB Carey Davis. No signing appears imminent, however, on any of those players.
theonlyramsfanfromjersey1442: Hi Jim, should the rams go after dominic rhodes or amani toomer? the rams have 4 receivers and also rhodes is a good back up and is better than gado.
Also, why did the Rams let Ronald Curry go? He would be the veteran of the young receiving core. He also had the 2nd most catches of the preseason. What happened??? As always, thanks, you do a great job.
Jim Thomas: Neither Toomer nor Rhodes appear to be on the team's radar. Curry's release did surprise me. For one, it's very unusual for a team to carry just four WRs on its active roster. For another, Curry was OK in the preseason. Not great, but he did show an ability to catch the ball over the middle. There's a chance Curry could be re-signed next week. At that point his contract would not be guaranteed. (As a vested veteran _ four or more years of NFL experience) your contract is guaranteed if you're on the roster for opening day. After opening day, the contract is not guaranteed for vested veterans.
Dave From Ohio: Jim,
Does it look like the Rams will roll with 4 WR's, or do they have someone in mind they are looking to sign? As always thanks for taking the time for these chats.
Jim Thomas: As amazing as it sounds, it looks like the Rams are carrying only four WRs into the regular season.
Larry: Jim...what your thoughts with the Rams having only four wide receivers at the start of the season. Is something still on the burner, or are they content with only four?
Jim Thomas: As I mentioned earlier, all signs point to the Rams keeping only four on the opening day roster. It's seems like quite a risk considering Avery is coming off a fractured foot and has been on the field for only about 8 plays all preseason. Stanley is coming off major knee surgery, and the track records of Burton and Robinson as players with a tendency to get nicked up.
Colton: Hey Jim,
I've got a few questions for you...
1. Do you think Anthony Smith is going to compete for the starting SS spot or is he just a back-up?
2. How long do you think Bulger's leash is? 1 bad game? 4 bad games?
3. How much do you expect Steven Jackson to get the ball? 25-30 touches?
4. Any updates on the #2 cornerback spot? Is Wade still holding his ground?
5. Last but not least, what's your prediction for the Rams regular season opener against Seattle? I say 17 -13 Rams
Thanks,
Colton
Jim Thomas: 1.) Smith is strictly a backup.
2.) Impossible to tell.
3.) 25 touches a game, I would think, would be the general target.
onemoreramfan: Can you explain how Nate Jones made the team initially ahead of Sean Walker, but Walker is on the practice squad and Jones isn't?
Jim Thomas: Jones was just added to the practice squad today. (He replaced DE Ian Campbell, who was cut.)
azpete: The Rams are really thin at RB going into the 1st game. They only have 2 healthy RB's; i.e., S Jackson and K Darby and Jackson is known for getting hurt. If Jackson does get hurt as is often the case, that leaves them with only Darby. Do you think they will get another RB before the 1st game? If not before the 1st game, after the 1st game?
Jim Thomas: Yeah, the Rams are just one shot to the ribs of Samkon Gado and one twisted knee by Kenneth Darby away from being down to one back.
rambosch: JT-Thanks for all your Ram insight every week. You really do an awesome job.
1)Any word on if Flajole is going to be upstairs for the opener or on the field? I know Spags said they would try both and make a decision.
2)Do you think we will pick up another receiver or rb before week 1 or is this what we will go with?
3)Is Roach a matter of going with a lower salaried player instead of Johnson and can Roach play special teams effectively.
Thanks again for holding these chats!
Jim Thomas: 1.) Flajole was in the both again for the KC game, and that looks like where he'll be in the regular season.
2.) Looks like they're standing pat.
3.) Roach is cheaper than Todd Johnson, who was in line to make a base salary of $950K this season. But Johnson was one of the Rams' top special teams players.
philip: Hi Jim ... thanks for your time. In light of Bulger's hand injury it made me think about Marc operating from the shotgun, but setting-up deep like the way Mizzou had Chase Daniels (7 yds +). It made him almost sack proof and you still operate with Jackson as the single back on obvious passing downs, etc. What do you and your readers think?
Also as I write this I have to voice my disappointment in the Rams not being more aggressive in their wavier wire pick-ups, though I know that vested veterans are best secured after the first week for financial purposes. 4WRs doesn't seem to be enough and we need serious help in the RB area. Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: Interesting thought, and something that could happen, at least in terms of running more shotgun plays than usual.
joe.hampel: Are the Rams coaches worried about Bulger starting Sunday at all?
Jim Thomas: If he doesn't take any snaps from under center on Wednesday, then it's officially time to be worried.
Taint tickler: I have Donnie Avery as one of my fantasy wideouts. Will he be ready for a significant role in week 1, or do you recommend maybe going with a backup?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: Boy, he sure has looked quick and productive on the practice field. But I'm not sure how he would hold up over an entire game at NFL regular-season game speed and intensity. Believe me, I'm no fantasy whiz, but I'd be hesitant to start him.
ncdc: Okay, Jim,
We've all seen Roach TRY to play safety- what's the real deal for keeping him on the roster? Honestly!
Jim Thomas: I guess it's special teams.
4thandJuan: Jim,
If the Rams claim someone on waivers, does that apply to an unlimited number of players. Or does that privilege extend to just one player?
Also, is that a new rule, that if you sign a veteran after Week 1 you're only obligated to pay him for the time served, but if you sign him before Week 1 it's a lot more salary to pay?
Thanx.
Jim Thomas: You can claim as many players as you want on waivers. The Rams claimed two _ S Anthony Smith and DT LaJuan Ramsey on Sunday.
The salary of any vested veteran (4 or more years in the NFL) is guaranteed for the entire season if he's on the opening day roster. If he's not on the opening day roster, it's not guaranteed, meaning you could (for example) re-sign Ronald Curry next week, and if things don't work out and you cut him two weeks later, only be on the hook for two weeks salary instead of the full year.
Josh (South Korea): Thanks for another week of putting up with us JT.
My question is with Tye Hill gone whos the other starter? Wade starting and Butler as nickel or does Justin King still hold down that nickel spot?
Im actually excited about these young fast guys manning the corner spot.
Also, what are the odds that Laurent Robinson ends up posting better numbers than Avery?
Jim Thomas: Wade is the starter opposite Bartell; I'm not entirely certain on this, but it looks like in nickel situations King comes off the bench to play corner, with Wade sliding into the nickel spot.
As for the WRs, very interesting question. Robinson has looked good in preseason.
Decker56: Hello Jim,
Providing Steven Jackson stays healthy do you see any way the Rams finish as well as 8 and 8?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: That would be quite a feat. A lot would have to go well.
tedco: Hey Jim. Just wondering where the Rams might be on the salary cap (concern about the possibility of an uncapped 2010 aside...). Thanks and keep up the good work.
Jim Thomas: Right before the final cuts the Rams were about $12 million under, but that was a very decieving figure since about most of that money was probably going to be used up on certain easily attainable incentives (mostly playing time, I think) on some veteran players. I think when all was said and done, the Rams were only expected to have about $2 million in wiggle room, cap-wise, which isn't much. But again, that was before the final cuts, and may be adjusted somewhat since then.
ihtnep: At what point were you sure that Linehan was not the right guy?
Also, I remember several games in 07 that were very close losses. Spags seemed very focused on enthusiasm, doing the little things and playing smart. How many games do you think they win in 07 if Spags had been the coach?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: How Linehan reacted during the team's 0-8 start to the '07 season caught my attention. It seemed like he just couldn't shake off the losing. And some of the player's reaction (behind the scenes) when I wrote the Shaw story (saying Linehan probably would be back) was interesting.
Four of the Rams' 13 losses in '07 were by a touchdown or less. Who knows how they would have done under Spags. We're only now going to get our first glimpse of how Spags is under fire on game day in the regular season.
Prof: Thanks for your time Mr. Thomas.
When we were at the Chiefs game, I noticed that a number of the interior problems present at the first game were fixed or improved: the down and distance display was moved and easy to read; the interior lighting, when the advertising band flashed or switched advertisers, seemed less intrusive (perhaps because the interior lights were kept brighter?); and the badly scraped rails in our section were repainted.
Could you please send a fan's "Thank-you" to the Rams and Mr. Demoff?
Jim Thomas: Mr. Demoff is an occasional participant, and a regular reader of these chats. I'm sure he appreciates the compliment.
Tiger J: Jim, remember last year when we didn't let Jackson get popped during the preseason how soft he was during the season. Do you think with the hitting they did in camp was good enuf
Jim Thomas: I think the hitting will help. Then again, Jackson got only 11 touches during the preseason.
Dave C: Jim , OTA's are over , mini-camps are over and training camp is over and the regular season is upon us.With everything you've seen, you now have the opportunity to go back time. Please complete the following sentence :
With the #2 pick in the 2009 NFL,the St. Louis Rams select......"
Jim Thomas: Hey, I think Jason Smith will be fine at OT. But I really liked LB Aaron Curry.
Newkirk: Jim,
This may have been asked an answered a dozen times now, but I haven't seen the definitive answer: With all the LOUSY high-draft picks (Hill, Byrd, Klop, Carriker, Leonard, passed on Cromartie, Bunkley, Cutler, etc.) from the Linehan era, WHO was the main mastermind behind those drafts? Had the Rams simply followed one of the many free online "rankings" lists for college players, we would have been far better off today!
Jim Thomas: Just one clarification on the missed picks. Cromartie had that great '07 season, but was lousy last year. I'm not sure if I'd include him with the others. But I would say Linehan-Zygmunt in '06 and '07. But particularly Linehan.
paceram: Jim,
Can you tell me who were your biggest surprises as far as players that made the Rams final roster and players that got cut? And, do you think the Rams will be making many roster changes before Sunday? Thanks!
Jim Thomas: The two biggest surprises on who's still hear would be David Roach and Eric Young. As for those who are gone, I'd say Todd Johnson and Ronald Curry. At the moment, I don't see any roster changes on the horizon.
ken: Will the Rams be quick to replace Bulger if he falters?
Jim Thomas: This week, with his pinky situation, I'd say they might be rather quick to do so in game.
Crazy_Legs: It appeared that Justin King was rolled up/over when he was trying to make a tackle on special teams in the last pre-season game against the Chiefs. It looked like he had hurt his leg yet I haven't read/seen anything indicating he was injured. What's his status and as always thanks...
Jim Thomas: C-Legs, I believe we had a mention in the paper that he tweaked his knee. But he turned out to be fine and was back on the practice field Monday.
ramboy81: hey jim ,tell the rams roscoe parrish go get him , a 4 or a 5 pick would do it . go rams.
Jim Thomas: Are you related to Roscoe. (I do appreciate your persistence.)
tom_in _sf: Hi Jim,
Thanks for the chat as always. With Trautwein and Scheuning being signed to the Browns active roster and the Raiders practice squad, respectively, does this speak well for the competitiveness for roster spots on the Rams offensive line? Does Eric Young actually beat out Trautwein and Foster straight-up?
Also, how long do you think the Rams can hold strong at ten offensive lineman and ten defensive lineman? We seem a little light at the offensive skill positions from a numbers standpoint?
Thanks,
Tom
Jim Thomas: I think it was a competitive situation. And I guess Young did _ at least for now _ win the No. 4 tackle job straightup over Trautwein and Foster.
As for the overall roster numbers, they do seem a little weird. Only seven RBs-WRs on the roster.
ramsfan1974: Hey Jim What are your thoughts on Bulger starting? Does Chris Long look like he will make a big impact this season. Have a great season Jim and thanks for keeping us informed. ramsfan 1974
Jim Thomas: If Bulger can't take a snap in practice, he shouldn't start Sunday. (See: Kurt Warner, Philadalphia, 2002.)
I expect Chris Long to be better this season.
djjr11854: Hi Jim,
Well the start of the season is here. I'm excited about the team this year, but trying not to be too overly optimistic. I know there is a long way to go from the bottom of the heap (last season). I would like to know what's going on with Hollis Thomas? Haven't heard alot about him recently. How did he performed in the preseason? I know they were counting on him to be the big man in the middle.
Jim Thomas: Hollis gradually has played his way back into better shape and conditioning. I think he was OK in the preseason. I'm curious to see how much he's used in Seattle.
Del Griffith: Hey JT,
Have you heard any buzz about how some of the guys the Rams passed on are doing so far? I'm thinking of guys like Rey Maualuga, Curry, Raji, Crabtree. Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Isn't Crabtree still unsignjed. Raji isn't starting yet in Green Bay; I don't think Maualuga is for Cincy either. As for Curry, all indications are that he's living up to the hype in Seattle. We'll get a first-hand glimpse of that this week.
Sirshankalot: Jim,
Is Seattle the worst place in the league for a new regime + talent-fragile team to play their opener?
thanks
Jim Thomas: Well, it's better than, say, opening in Pittsburgh. But Qwest Field is very tough on opposing teams.
Kenn Maurer: How much longer do we have to put up with Barron? I watched him walk off the field at Lindenwood near the end of the game after 2 false starts and he had his head down and then looked up at the crowd and shoot his head side to side. This kid is beat. He just doesn't have it.
Jim Thomas: I can top that. It looked like he pulled a cellphone out of his stockings walking off the field in Cincy. Even so, I think Barron has played fairly well in the preseason. He looks more comfortable at left tackle. Let's see what happens in Seattle, where the fans at Qwest Field take great pride in forcing false starts.
Kenn Maurer: When is Barron's contract up?
Jim Thomas: It's up after this year. But like Atogwe (and Richie Incognito for that matter), if 2010 is indeed an uncapped year, Barron (and Atogwe and Incognito) revert back to restricted free agent status.
RamFan78: Jim,
Sorry I have one more. How are tickets sales going, are we in for more blackouts from what you have heard?
Jim Thomas: Plenty of good seats still available.
Mark G.: Not sure if you're a fantasy guy. Most people are drafting Jackson 5th or so, assuming he'll be healthy for 16 games. Would you take him that high, or do you figure he'll miss the usual four or five games with injuries?
Jim Thomas: Injuries are impoossible to pick. I'm not a fanstasy expert, but I think Jackson definitely would be a top 10 pick. He's also had the benefit of a full training camp this year. The offensive line figures to be improved. And Jackson did a lot more weight training in the offseason.
junglejim: Jim,
How does the practice squad work, when can they move a player up to fill a roster spot, and can they send someone down from the roster to the practice squad? I know it is not like the minors in baseball, but I am not quite sure how the practice squad can be used.
Jim Thomas: You can sign a player to the active roster from the practice squad at any time. There are no limits to the amount of times you can add or subtract a player to the active roster or practice squad. (Except that a player can be on the practice squad for no more than 3 years and no longer is eligible for the practice squad once he's had an accrued season in the league.)
NotMyHome: JT,
Of course we need to out score them, but in order for the Rams to beat the Seahawks on Sunday they must:(1)_______, (2)_______, (3)_______ and avoid_______________.
Looking forward to the game.
Jim Thomas: 1.) Win the turnover battle; 2.) minimize big plays allowed on defense; 3.) play better overall run defense; 4.) avoid special teams gaffes.
rammer80: Is Spags concerned with the depth at RB?
Is there anyone out there that might be a possible pickup for #2?
Did the RB out of Texas do that bad that he couldn't make the team?
Tell me my wish of starting Boller this week will come true. While I don't see him as great I think he's a better leader than Bulger and won't lose the game for you.
Looking at the schedule who do you think we can pick up a W against during our first 7 games. Maybe Washington but if we don't get 2 or 3 it could be a long season. I like what I see with the team but it could very well be 4 wins this year which will lead to a lot of blackouts in STL. Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: I'll just answer that Ogbonnaya question. He seemed to dance a little too much instead of just hitting the hole. But he has good hands, which is an asset in the West Coast system. And could develop into an NFL player.
jim roy: Jim-
I'm a suffering Rams fan living in Seattle.
What's the deal with our Rams and DT's? Are we going to be bad there again this year?
We've spent so much on draft choices, and we can never find anyone who gets much done.
Teams can always run on the Rams.
Is this poor drafting or bad luck or both?
Pacific Northwest Ram Fan
Jim Thomas: I hate to say it, but Ryan Pickett and Damione Lewis might be better than anything the Rams currently have at DT.
CTRamsFan: Hi Jim,
Besides the obvious worries at WR, who will the starting DT's be and how much can we expect from Hollis Thomas? Situational role perhaps or working himself into shape to start?
Jim Thomas: Situational role at best for Thomas; it looks like Ryan and Gary Gibson will be the opening day starters at DT.
steve: hey jim, if you see ian campbell around rams park, i would love to hear what he has to say about making the practice squad. especially when you factor in spags has coached defensive ends the likes of strahan, osi, and justin tuck. as a small-town, western-kansas kid myself, couldn't be happier for ian.
Jim Thomas: As I mentioned earlier, Campbell was released from the practice squad today to make room for WR Nate Jones.
Buzz: Jim,
Is there any way Adam Carriker has a future with the Rams? I really think he's been with the wrong team, playing the wrong position all along. My thinking is that he's a 3-4 DE and only a 3-4 DE. Agreed? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: I still think it's too early to give up on Carriker. But he may indeed be a 3-4 end miscast here as a 4-3 tackle.
Dominique: How can a player recieve a tryout for the Rams? Or how can a player get a look from the Rams?
Jim Thomas: Usually they, or their agents, get a call from the Rams.
Jonathan: Will the Rams consider signing David Tyree now that he has been cut from the Giants, considering that the Rams currently lack depth in the wide receiver position?
Jim Thomas: At last check, Tyree had not heard from the Rams.
FredDryerFan: Mr. Thomas, look deep into your crystal and and make some early predictions:
1.) Who's due to make the Pro-bowl off this squad?
2.) Who will have more catches Avery or Robinson at years end?
3.) Does Leonard Little have enough spare parts left to make it a full season?
4.) Finally, will the Rams actually score a touch down in the first game or win on 5 Josh Brown field goals?
Jim Thomas: 1.) Steve Jackson, Donnie Jones, Oshiomogho Atogwe
2.) Robinson
3.) Yes
4.) Yes
Jim: Jim -
I been reading and hearing mostly critical comments concerning David Roach making the final roster. What is your opinion of his ability, potential? Were you as surprised as everyone else seemed to be?
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Yes, I was supposed. His gaffes and missed tackles were all very noticeable. Many contributed to big plays. And it didn't happen just once or twice. He does have size, ragne, and is a physical player.
rdh2210a: Hi Jim,
Who will be our KR and PR on Sunday? No one has stood out in pre season games.
Many thanks for your time,
Rich (UK Ram)
Jim Thomas: It still looks like Stanley on punts and either Gado or Darby on KORs.
jonathan.marty: Hey Jim,
With 2 preseason games at the Dome in the books, what can you tell those of us that haven't been fortunate enough to attend a game about the new renovations?
Does the new paint job/natural light, field seats, video screens, Bud Light Party Zone, etc. make for a better football atmosphere?
Also, do you feel the Rams are reaching a bit when it comes to the new, ultra-high-end Clarkson-Jewlers suites? Your thoughts?
Thanks!
Jim Thomas: I think it's a noticeable upgrade; the new scoreboards aren't tremendously big, but their clarity is much better than the previous scoreboards. There's more light in the building on game day. It still would be nice to have more natural light coming in.
I'm not sure what the Clarkson-Jewelers suites are?
Monty: What excites you most about the Rams this season, or is this gonna be a repeat of the last few seasons?
Jim Thomas: I think the overall attitude of the team is much better than it was a year ago. So far, they believe in their new head coach, respect him, etc. That can't be underestimated. I like all the turnovers produced in the preseason. The team has shown a resourcefulness on game day, a moxie if you will to hang in games and finish out games.
ColinP: Jim,
A couple of questions...
Did Antonio Pitmann do something in the last few weeks of camp to take him out of favor with the coaches or did he just not have a good camp? I'll admit I didn't watch a ton the preseason action but I'm having a hard time understanding how a guy like Darby makes the roster over him.
Also, I like the fact that Spags and Billy D are rewarding young guys who had a good camp with roster spots, but wouldn't it have been wise to use one of those spots (such as the one that went to C.J. Ah You) to keep a veteran receiver like Curry or Carter? I understand they want players with upside, but I have a hard time seeing how we can expect Bulger and the offense to improve without some veteran presence among the wr's....
Thanks!
Colin
Jim Thomas: Based on what happened in the regular season last year, Pittman isn't as good on blitz pickup or pass catchng as Darby. Saying that, Darby didn't have much of a preseason. I thought there was a possiblity the team might cut both and look for someone else on the outside.
Mark S: Jim, there is an obvious talent problem with the Rams that is the result of poor drafting over the years, which has been well-documented. Realistically, how many drafts/off-seasons do you think it will take for this team to have a chance at improving the talent level enough to be a threat to compete for the playoffs?
Jim Thomas: At least one more very good draft and free agency.
B Payne: Jim, Seems to me that throwing Bulger in there at less than 100% hurts the team short and long term. Have you seen him throw?
Jim Thomas: Yes, I've seen him throw a few times. I don't think the throwing will be a problem. It's whether he'll be OK taking the snap from center.
Patrick in O'Fallon: Hey Jim,
Your article today mentioned David Roach making the team. I was shocked he made it based on his number of big miscues during preseason. Is this a sign of how desperate the Rams are on defense or were there good things he did that weren't apparent during the preseason games?
Jim Thomas: I was as puzzled as the next guy.
hambone: What is your take on all the coordinators getting fired the last couple weeks. Do you think the pressure on Head Coaches to turn things around so quickly is causing them to make panic moves?
Jim Thomas: Very surprised. In KC, you just knew Haley wanted to call the shots. In Tampa, I heard Jagodzinski was in over his head. In Buffalo, Jauron is very much on the hot seat. It makes you wonder though, what these teams were thinking when they hired the guys. Former Rams assistant Greg Olson will do a good job for the Bucs, he did a good job in St. Louis in 2006 when he really had play calling duties (4-2 down the stretch in '06, Jackson got plenty of work, Rams averaged 28 points a game.)
Dave: Hi Jim
Any word on sell-outs for this season?
Jim Thomas: Plenty of good seats remain available.
pele1172: What do think of David Tyree at WR & Ian Johnson at RB they are young and have plenty of upside wouldn't they fit the bill for what the Dean is looking for.
Jim Thomas: Tyree isn't all that young at age 29, but I guess he's young enough. But he was more special teams player than dependable receiver afor the NY Giants, that huge catch in the Super Bowl vs. the Pats notwithstanding. I'm guessing if the Rams had any interest in Johnson, they would've claimed him off waivers.
kumuhunter: Hi Jim,
The Rams' schedule doesn't suit them with so many road games to begin the season with. What is your final won-loss prediction for this year now that the final 53 players have been selected?
Thanks!
Damien Domingo
Jim Thomas: I guess I'll stick with my original prediction made in our Aug. 23 football preview section: 6-10. (And I say in advance, I believe that's a somewhat optimistic prediction.)
SoulardX: Jim, I've read/heard from you and others that many of the Rams roster moves this week are for monetary reasons--players were cut to save money. Does this imply a cashflow problem for the franchise or is it just business as usual? Meaning, the difference between the players cut/kept is so nominal, that they team may as well save some money.
Jim Thomas: Could be something to that in the case of Todd Johnson, and possibly Curry. This isn't a franchise swimming in cash. But that doesn't really have an impact here. Lack of available cash has more of an impact when it comes time to pay big signing bonuses. I just think the Rams, with tons of dead money _ about 2nd-highest in dead money in the league _ are relatively tight against the cap.
Brock Berlin: Jim,
Why did I get cut? I threw a TD pass!
Brock
Jim Thomas: I was mildly surprised on this one. Berlin played pretty well in the preseason. He seems to me to have gotten more accurate and more comfortable at QB. I think Null could have been signed to the practice squad.
grimmsta642@yahoo.com: Hey Jim..
For some reason, I'm an optimist. I'm also a realist. I somehow see us winning more than six games. I actually see 8-10 gmaes that can be won this year. I know that there are unaswered questions roster wise, but just according to atitude and toughness alone , we are much differentr from last seasons past. As a former football player, I do know that attitude, cohesiveness, and toughness will beat a team loaded with talent (look what happened to us in '01). So i see us pullinmg out some vitories we wouldn't have pulled out the last couple of seasons.
I just wanted to see your view of what I'm saying, if you don't mind.
Jim Thomas: No doubt, judging at least from what we saw in the preseason, the Rams might be able to steal a couple of games, or hang in during some games where they have no business doing so. But will that translate from the preseason to the regular season. Will some of the roster issues jump up and bite the Rams? Will the wrong players get injured? It's hard to predict any of that.
Rammer: Hey, JT.
Looks like we'll be seeing a lot of passes to the TE w/ only 4 WRs. Any idea who's the #2 TE? Fells or Bajema?
Also, how serious is Gado's injury? I'm not too worried about the RB depth if he's healthy, but if not...yikes.
Jim Thomas:
I think Bajema probably be on the field more because he's a much better blocker than Fells is at this point.
Cartilage problems with the ribs can be very painful.
Bond_007x: Hey Jimbo, Good work as usual.
We all know Bulger has started throwing again. What can you tell us about his that? Is the finger seemingly affecting his throws? Are his balls still crisp? Does he look like he's suffered from missed practice reps? Is he still accurate as usual?
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: I'll repeat. From what I've seen of Bulger throwing, he looks very good. He had plenty of zip and accuracy on the ball during pregame warmpus for the Governor's Cup game. He threw the ball well in practice Monday as well.
Big John: Hey Jim, thanks for the chats. OT Tony Pashos of Illinois recently released by Jax. Any interest on the rams behalf. Invision a scenerio with Pashos being a backup at both tackle and guard then moving to full time RT next year with J. Smith taking over full time at LT. Pashos is a power full run blocker, probably cheaper than re signing Alex Barron.
Jim Thomas: Pashos as you probably now know, signed with San Francisco. He was making a big salary, he was due to make more than Barron's $2.4 million this year before he was released by the Jags. The Rams are committed to Barron and Smith as their tackles this year. With that I've got to go. Talk to you all next week.
