rams26: Hello Jim -
For three weeks in a row I want to make my case that Haslett does not deserve another chance. The team has not responded. They need someone new next season. If Chip holds true to his word, there is no way Haslett is back next year. He would have to go 4 - 2 in the final six games to win six total. That isn't going to happen. There is talent on this team. With this division, we can be back in division title contention next year if the proper moves are made.
As always..............GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!
Jim Thomas: And just who do you think the Rams are going to "attract" as a head coaching candidate, given the current state of the roster and the uncertainty over a franchise sale?
Encino: Given that the Rams' run defense has been awful, and that two first-round draftees are part of the defensive line, have Carriker and Long been a disappointment at this stage of their NFL careers?
Jim Thomas: This is a week to week business. Two weeks ago, I would've said that Chris Long has played better than expected. He's been pretty quiet the past two weeks on the field. As for Carriker, a few weeks ago before his ankle injury, I would've said that he was starting to come into his own after a slow start coming off shoulder surgery. It seems obvious that Carriker's ankle is bothering him. (He didn't play much at all in the early going against San Francisco.)
The Rams have only three defensive tackles on their roster. Besides Carriker, it's Glover (who's hurting and obviously near the end of a fine career), and Clifton Ryan (who has been pretty invisible the past couple of weeks.)
The linebacker play has dropped off without Chris Draft at strongside linebacker, and Will Witherspoon (who's playing with a rotator cuff problem in his shoulder) is having a bad year.
And we should mention that the front seven is undersized and the overall run support is poor at cornerback. Other than that, the run defense is peachy.
bfulton: You've repeatedly stated that a sale this season seems unlikely. That being the case, will the limbo hamper the team in the offseason. Will the team be able to fully fund competing scouting operationgs and free agent acquisitions? As always, thanks for all of your reporting and insight.
Jim Thomas: I was told a while back that the Rams had what looked like a couple of serious potential buyers, but apparently they have backed off. In the current econcomic climate, putting together the kind of credit line to finance such a mega-purchase is next to impossible.
Despite all their problems, the Rams have always spent at or near the cap since moving to St. Louis. I don't expect that to change. If Chip Rosenbloom was trying to clear the decks for a quick sale, the team would have traded out of the expensive No. 2 spot in the draft last April. They wouldn't have spent $36 million on Jacob Bell (maybe now you could argue that they shouldn't have done that anyway), they wouldn't have made Josh Brown the most expensive kicker in NFL history, and they wouldn't have extended Steven Jackson's contract (again, insert your own punch line if you'd like). I've seen no indication that the Rams won't keep spending money to try to improve the team.
dominic zappia: Hey Jim:
Im at a loss of what is going on,but one thing I do know is that once negativity sets in,its all over.I know in the past it is said that to cut someone and his huge salary, the team will take a huge cap hit.My take, just do it! If the player cant play any longer, the team must move on....period!
I have no clue what direction the owner will take, but its obvious sweeping changes need to be done from the top down.I hope no job is safe based on what the player salary is. Players like Bulger,Chavous,Pisa,Bennett and several others who have proven to be done as players here will be shown the door and Management will prove to the fans that they are serious about changing the atmosphere and that winning in the number one priority.
This will be a very interesting and exciting offseason if done correctly. Thank you Jim......
Jim Thomas: Dominic--It's fine to say cut him, him and him. The problem is, you must find somebody at least that good as a replacement. And the cap is what it is. If you just cut everybody and end up with $20-30 million of dead money, that's $20-30 million less money that you have to sign new players.
dick stephens: Hi Jim. With this season basically over, I wonder if you could speculate on the offseason coming up. With Shaw and Z leaving after the season. Could you see the Rams offering the GM and coaching jobs to Pete Carrol after this season? Pete has said he would only consider an NFL job if he had total control and the Ram owners live in LA. Bill D. could still handle the scouting. What do you think?
Jim Thomas: Pete Carroll has a nice thing going at USC. No doubt. But given his past record in the NFL, which isn't very good, why do you think he would be an elixir at Rams Park? There's a long list of stud college coaches who have been flops in the NFL.
Ed Papin: Looking at the draft, is Macland from Missouri a first rounder? Would the rams be interested - Holt will probably be gone due to signing bonus? What position would yoou draft for in rounds 1-2-3 ?
Jim Thomas: From what I've heard from scouts and personnel people, Maclin looks like a sure first rounder and a potential top 10 pick. I'm sure the Rams would be interested, with or without Holt on the roster, but they have a greater need on the offensive line, particularly at tackle.
The Rams have so many needs, I don't think you can pin them down in rounds 1-2-3. To a large degree, they need to take the best player available in the early rounds, and not reach for need. Saying that, what they do in free agency prior to the draft will have some effect on their draft.
jlaue: in the history of sports, has any team had to fire 2 coaches in one season?
also 2 years ago bulger questioned the heart of the team and playing for paychecks, kind of ironic now isn't it?
Jim Thomas: Fire two coaches in one season? That might be a first.
Two years ago, Bulger didn't question the heart. He questioned the effort and preparation. Say what you will about Bulger, I don't think you can question either his effort or his preparation.
jason: any thoughts on Donovan Mcnabb? before you say anything about his lack of knowledge on overtime i would love for the rams to get to overtime.
Jim Thomas: Yeah, the Rams are a long way from overtime.
It's surprising that McNabb apparently didn't know the rule. I'll just leave it at that.
donsods: Jim,
Looks like Orlando Pace may be done. Sad to see a Ram great at the end of his career. I wonder if Torry Holt is at the same stage of his career. I listened to sunday's game on Sirus, which had the 49er radio broadcast. Their annoucers repeatly talked about how Nate Clemens had Holt covered and he was a non-factor. 2 years ago, Holt would have owned Clemens. I know we hate to see a long-time great past his prime and their has been a lot of whining on the various boards about the failure to get Holt the ball. Could it just be that he near done? Both Pace and Holt have given us plenty of awesome football. I'll miss them both.
Jim Thomas: Well, Holt did catch five passes for 60 yards, and at garbage time _ the final couple of Rams drives _ he was taken out of the game, so he could've padded his stats even more in the final quarter. I don't think Holt is done.
But it is sad to see Pace and Holt near the end. They have been great performers for the Rams over the years, and have been first-class citizens, and a pleasure to deal with from a media standpoint.
ramsfan80: Jim,
Four questions:
1. Will Chip own the team in 2009?
2. If so, when will he decide to hire a team prez, general manager, etc.?
3. When will these people be hired? Are there any names being thrown around?
4. Will Haslett coach this team in 2009?
Thanks.
Jim Thomas: 1. Yes
2. He's working on that now.
3. At the end of the season. Devaney sure looks like the front runner for GM; not sure on team prez.
4. To the best of my knowledge Chip would like to retain Haslett, but a couple of victories sure would help.
Ramswin: Hey Jim,
Assuming we finally get a true MIKE LB this offseason, do think that either Witherspoon or Pisa can play the SAM position?
Thanks,
Luke
Jim Thomas: Good question. Obviously, neither has the ideal size to play the position. But with the right middle linebacker, I think it might be possible.
Antony: Jim,
I was hoping to see a better game out of the rams, but that is unlikely. In this league that gets better in a hurry like the Dolphins, what are the chances that the Rams could have such a turnaround? That would mean that the front office clowns have to be replaced. But do you see that as a possibility for the Rams and is there a GM/HC out there that might be able to orchestrate that turnaround.
Jim Thomas: Sure, it's possible. The Rams did it in '98 and '99, or did you forget?
As for the magic name(s) as GM/HC, I really don't have one for you.
OCRich: I'm going to ask the question that has been on the mind of all Ram fans for the entire season.
Will we ever see the gold pants this year?
(Sorry...too exasperated to ask a serious football question this week.)
Jim Thomas: I'll try to find out.
Franklin: Oh Jim,
Among the current practice squad players, are any considered legit prospects for the future; in effect, rotation players, special teams players or even long, long-shot starting possibilities? Do you anticipate any tabbed for use this season?
Going deep down the roster,
Franklin!
Jim Thomas: The Rams do seem to be intrigued with Roach, the safety, but they've already promoted three practice squad players to the active roster over the course of the season (Stanley, Vobora, Bassey).
Rich: Good afternoon Jim,
Do you see the Rams clearing the roster of a lot of high priced veterans such as Pace, Little, Bulger, and Holt in the off-season?
I realize a team needs a steady core of vets; however, the Rams certainly haven't gotten their moneys worth out of the above four this past season.
Little and Pace can't stay healthy.
With the exception of a couple of games, Holt is been a non-factor in the offense.
And Bulger's woes have been well documented this season.
Thanks for these chats.
Jim Thomas: Now, a new coach could change everything but Bulger's not going anywhere. I don't think Little is either. I'm not so sure about Holt and Pace.
jerome: What up Jim this is kinda 3 questions
(1)So this last couple of games do u think they will play Greco and the rest of the rookies?
(2)What will they do after the season over Will the retain Haslet?
(3)Do you think they will really draft a MLB and a SS cause this year cause honestly i thnk the won't and if they do watch they will take them like in the sixth and seventh round
Jim Thomas: 1.) Not sure what you mean about the "rest of the rookies." Other than the two o-linemen (Greco and Schuening) all the rookies ARE playing. With Goldberg now at tackle in place of the injured Pace, Greco is next in line at guard.
But I've been told today that Incognito's shoulder checked out fine and that he will start and play against Chicago.
2.) See earlier answers.
3.) I do think MIKE LB and SS are on the Rams' shopping list, either in free agency or via the draft.
arturo: Hi Jim
Even though Haslett is sticking with bulger for the rest of this season barring injuries, come next year, I understand Matt Cassel will be a free agent, and since Tommy Terrific is coming off the Injuries, do you think the Rams will go after him, he is mobile and young and has a good arm. Trading Bulger to the Lions for a third round, what do you think?
Jim Thomas: No. For the umpteenth time, trading or cutting Bulger is cap prohibitive!!!!
Hen: Jim,
I'm about as disgusted as every Ram fan by the heartless way we have lost most of our games this year. The defense gets pushed around and our 3rd downs on both sides of the ball are back breakers and sap even my energy to watch. But my biggest gripe all year it seems is with Bulger. On TV I see a quarterback who seems scared. The fumble recovery "attempt" on Sunday by him infuriated me. He backed away from it!!! As a fan I really don't care how Bulger got to playing scared but since he is he needs to sit until he can prove otherwise. Is this your thought as well?
Jim Thomas: I'm far from giving up on Bulger. There are way too many problems around him to blame everything on him. But I do think it's time to start Trent Green for a game or two or three. (But as you may have noticed, nobody consulted me at Rams Park.)
RAMJAM: I wonder if we could beat the Lions, seriously? This is the saddest team Ive ever seen in any league. I pray St.Louis doesn’t loose the Rams, we are very lucky to have an NFL team. Who knows what will happen now. The rams history in St.Louis isn’t deep enough to have team that is uncompetitive and plays like the softest men known to man. I mean seriously, try to get someone who knows nothing about football interested in the NFL by watching the Rams with them. It is impossible. The fan base is decreasing rapidly, and it wouldn’t be like this if they would just compete. JUST COMPETE. They don’t have to win, just show they are men and care about their self respect. But it is obvious that no man on the Rams has self respect. They are all soft, and worthless. Very, very sad.
Jim Thomas: I'm not going to say these guys are soft, that they've quit, that they're worthless. I am a beat writer, not a hater. But I will say this: The lack of tackling and intensity on defense is absolutely mind-boggling. I've seen a lot of football over the years, and this is unbelievable.
Mitch from San Diego: Hi Jim,
Thanks again for your time. Considering Zigmunt and Shaw are on the way out, would it not be a hoot if Mad Mike were brought back? I mean he's available and based on his comments last week I bet he would LOVE to come back with Zigmunt and Shaw gone. I believe he certainly deserves another shot. Fan interest in St Louis would peak instantly at a stroke of the pen. The Rams were never boring and did not quit in games with Martz on the sideline. It would not be the first time a team brought back a coach after a less that harmonious separation. Maybe you can pass on my suggestion to Mr. Rosenbloom.
Jim Thomas: Interesting thought, Mitch. I'll try to run it by Chip.
4thandJuan: Jim,
What do you do with Jacob Bell? If he's not effective at guard, can he play center? Sure sounds like another bad free-agent signing of an ex-Titan. But the Rams have spent too much on him to just cut him after one year.
Jim Thomas: For some reason, Bell has had trouble keeping weight on this season. He is playing very light _ in the low 280s _ and for that reason is getting knocked around some. He needs to get his weight back up to 300 pounds or so. Don't know about center, but there has been some thought given to trying him at tackle.
Midnighter67: Do you expect any of the veterans to be traded or released in the offseason regardless of who is head coach? Guys like Tinoisamoa, Little, Pace, Barron, Chavous, Holt, and Bulger are ineffective, not used, or always hurt. It would seem those dollars would be better spent elsewhere. I would like to see Pace retire a Ram but, I guess, business is business. Holt deserves a chance to play with a winner at this point in his career. Obviously they can't turn over the entire roster but removing the big money guys that aren't productive, whatever the reason, could help build this team back a little quicker.
Jim Thomas: Yes.
fcoprado: Jim, good afternoon. thank you for having these live chats with us suffering Ram fans. Can you tell me how real of a posibility is there that Jay Zygmunt and John Shaw are gone after this season.I've only heard rumors but please give me (us fans) hope that this will happen. When Vermeil left the Rams, he left us with the best team in football only to see these two ruin (along with Martz and Lenihan) the team.
Jim Thomas: It seems like I answer this one every week, but here we go again. I expect Zygmunt to be gone; and Shaw to resign the presidency further divorcing himself from day-to-day matters (but staying around as a consultant to Rosenbloom).
old cowboy: Hey Jim, Are these Tuesday chats starting to feel like groundhogs day?
1] Do you think any of the fringe players brought off practice squads or picked up during the season have a chance of stickingie Darby, Craft etc?
2]Are there any players thay coaches and or media question whether they would be playing hurt if this was a contending team?
Jim Thomas: 1.) There are still six games left. Darby and Craft are still playing for their jobs, like many others. Darby has some possibility as a third-down/change of Pace back. Craft has had some good moments (and some bad) as a nickel back.
2.) Not sure what or who you're talking about here. Part of Jackson's problem is that he tried to return too soon. (on a couple of occasions)
NYC Rams Fan: Hi Jim,
Thanks for hosting this chat at a time when you know is going to be nothing but fans roasting the Rams. I think it's safe to say at this point "here we go again," and in even worse fashion than last year.
There are obviously going to be major personnel changes this off-season considering how either the players can't play or don't want to (neither is acceptable). Who do you think is definitely gone from this year's roster, and which positions do we replenish through free-agency vs. the draft? Do you see the Rams drafting a quarterback for the future after Bulger's play over the last 1.5 seasons?
Jim Thomas: Some of the names are obvious, and we've mentioned them earlier.
As for free agency and the draft, it's a moving target and still developing. First off, many of the names currently on the free agency list will be long gone (either re-signed or franchise) prior to the start of the free agency period. Secondly, the juniors (and third-year sophomores) can't declare until January, and that obviously will radically change what the first round looks like. What the Rams can get done in free agency obviously affects what they do in the draft.
Gary Nguyen: Jim,
The Rams play calling has been attrocious on both Offense and Defense. How come Al Saunders does not go with the No Huddle or have the QB change the play at the last minute and have other teams Defense guessing?
And on Defense, why does Venturi not have speed guys like Will Witherspoon playing Defense End and rotate, or even better, load him on the Left End with LL and add another LB as the Middle LB to mix things up?
The Offensive and Defensive play callings must be Unpredictable and Creative because the Rams don't have enough talent or playmakers to make things happen. The Rams must pull out all the stops and play like this is their last job.
Jim Thomas: First, the news of the day. The team has added former Tampa Bay offensive lineman Anthony Davis to the active roster. Davis can play both tackle spots and can play some guard. This is a depth measure in response to Pace's injury. It's doubtful that Davis will be up to speed this week, which means Greco will be the third tackle Sunday (if healthy) behind starters Barron and Goldberg.
To make room for Davis on the active roster, the team has released Samkon Gado.
The Rams ran the no-huddle most of the second half vs. San Francisco, which means Bulger basically calls the plays. I'd like to see more no-huddle, even if just for a change of pace.
Using Witherspoon on the edge would seem to help in passing situations. But let's face it, how often have the Rams had the opposition in predictable passing situations this season. Not very often given that most games have gotten out of hand very quickly.
YoMurphy: Hi Jim,
Sad times for this team. I was wondering if there is a way to see this next game as an opportunity to see something from our rookie linemen thanks to the injuries? I know Goldberg will fill in for Pace, although I don't know why he doesn't trade positions with Barron and start at RT instead.
However, I am most concerned that Greco's patella injury may be chronic. Will he play in Incognito's spot? If not, does Scheuning have a chance to play? Also, did everyone give up on playing Greco at O-Tackle already?
Final question: I am of the opinion that the Rams actually improve their draft stock by winning a few games and getting out of the impossible to trade out of #2 or #3 spots. Do you think this is possible given the rest of our schedule? (and yes I know they couldn't beat a the St. Louis College of Pharmacy if they play like they have the last three games)
Jim Thomas: As I mentioned in an earlier post, Incognito's MRI checked out OK. He's good to go Sunday against the Bears and will start.
I don't think there's any reason to view Greco's patellar injury as chronic. The Rams expect him to be available this weekend. Repeating: When the Rams drafted Greco, they mentioned that they thought his future was at guard not tackle. This view was only reinforced watching Greco in training camp and the preseason. So no one has really "given up" on Greco at tackle. It was in their mindset all along that he was an NFL guard. Not a tackle. Now you can question the Rams wisdom for not drafting a true tackle in the third round, but that's the subject for another day.
As for winning a couple more games, three things have to happen. 1.) Zero or minimal turnovers; 2.) A strong running game (with or without Jackson); 3.) Some takeaways (that are turned into points) by the St. Louis defense. Otherwise, you can forget about it.
Mark in NY: Jim, thanks for taking my rant. I'm sure your job is getting more difficult by the week.
The Rams have no LEADERSHIP at all. There is not one person on that team that can rally the troops. Instead of "cutting or trading everyone", it will be much easier to decide who to keep. This makes the list a lot shorter. My votes are Pace (restructured contract), Pittman, OJ, Craft, Witherspoon (outside only), Long, Little (restructured), Carriker (have to), Ryan, Victor A, F Brown, Bartell, Avery, Burton, Stanley, McMicheal, and Barron (unless he gets a big contract from someone else). Did I leave anyone out? Everyone else is replaceable.
And I don't care about Stephen Jackson's speed or strength or size... aside from a couple of games (out of 4 years) he has done nothing. Even the year be put up big numbers, all the games were the same.. 75 yards rushing, 60 yards receiving (he was Bulger's checkdown guy). Over 16 games that equated to around 2000 yards. Congratulations, but only 1 or 2 games mattered. This guy couldn't carry Marshall Faulk's jock strap. Pittman can replace him EASILY.
What do you think of my list, and also my views on Jackson? Thanks!
Jim Thomas: Strongly disagree with their views on Jackson. He is clearly the Rams best player _ WHEN HEALTHY. He's no Marshall Faulk, but who is. Faulk was one of the all-time greats.
rich: Jim: What was the point of paying Trent Greene all those millions if when they need him (like now) they're not going to use him? It's clean Bulger is not himself and a change is needed at QB as well as elsewhere on this sorry excuse for a team. And Stephen Jackson after not playing for the last 4 weeks needs to him his mouth shut after Sundays game because, YES, there more be more Bear than Rams fans at the dome!
Jim Thomas: I agree with you on Green.
I don't think Jackson will have much to say about the Bear fans.
eddie c: Jim,
Rams need to be thinking, pick a 1st round quarterback in upcoming draft. There are a lot of college QB's lighting up the airways this year. Is Graham Harrell coming out? Colt McKoy? Sam Bradford? Riesing? Grothe? There are at least 8 QB's in college better than Bulger right now. His sporadic play is a convincing sign to everyone that he doesn't have what it takes. The defense's troubles have stemmed from the offense's ineptitude, ever since the preseason. Giving teams a short field causes more problems than a bad defense. What's the damage to the cap if bulger is released next year?
Jim Thomas: The Rams will not take a QB in the first round. You can forget about that. I don't think Bulger's play, as lacking as it may be, has anything to do with missed tackles on defense.
Did you see the Cleveland-Buffalo game last night? Trent Edwards threw three early interceptions _ two of them deep in Buffalo territory. The Browns got two field goals out of those takeaways. Is there some law that says the Rams defense can't do the same?
Once again--It's an $8 million cap hit if Bulger's cut or traded by June. Plus, there's an additional $3 million of his '09 base salary that is guaranteed.
signed s. j.: Jim,
Chris Chamberlian led the nation in tackles last year with 165
tackles. He looks bigger than 230 at 6'1.In the preseason he led the team in tackles & was the best cover LB on the team. Why did it take until the
last real series & Pisa hurting his ankle for Chris to get in? By the way
did you actually see his first Ram tackle. If you did not see it, maybe you
heard it. Go CC & the Rams.
Jim Thomas: To me, Chamberlain looks smaller than his listed weight.
Mr. Smith: JT thanks for being here for the fans through the good, bad and the ugly.
After watching Pittman through out the last couple games im not totally sold on him. While he does seem to have a nice burst threw the hole he seems to lack vision at times and the juke move to escape for that extra couple of yards. At the end of this year Sproles from San Diego will be a FA. Do you think the Rams will show interest in obtaining him in the off-season? Personally I think he would make a great pick up. He instantly fills 3 roster spots that are needed. HB, KR, PR. What do you think?
Jim Thomas: I think the Rams want a big back as the No. 2, or No. 1A, behind Jackson.
YoungRamer: Hi Jim,
What do you think about the Rams focusing on the o-line (through draft and free agency) and utilize the three backs we have Jackson, Pittman, and Darby for next year. Darby shows the ability to be a good third down back he can catch and pass block (when he blocks he is the aggressor). It seems Jackson cant carry the load.
Seriously Jim, what can playing Berlin hurt since they cant protect Buldger and just gonna beat him down even more,he wont be any good next year. The kid showed poise and mobility. Im not saying hes gonna win games but give it a shot, he is apart of the future.
Thanks alot, Jim
Jim Thomas: My sense is that the offensive line will be the top priority. But the team will still look for another running back.
The Berlin thing won't happen.
gregory: Hello Jim,
When Jim Haslets coaching label was taken away and restored to interim coach, do you think that it had a negative effect on the players and the coach as well? If not, why such an immense drop off in performance since the New England game? I realize that Steven Jackson is key to the offence but the defense is another story.
thx,
greg
Jim Thomas: Interesting point. I wonder about that as well. From a players standpoint, they view this as a totally rudderless ship here at Rams Park. That being said, would your play drop off to the point where you jeopardized your ability to keep working becuase of it?
Keep in mind, too, that two defensive tackles Carriker (ankle), Glover (knee) and middle linebacker Witherspoon (rotator cuff) are playing through nagging injuries. I'm sure that has led to some of the dropoff as well.
Obes: I have heard some rumors of the Rams looking into Matt Cassell. Have you heard anything on this?
Jim Thomas: No.
Tom: Hi Jim,
Do you have any insite as to why Jacob Bell has lost 25lbs and is playing at 280lbs? No wonder he is getting pushed around.
Jim Thomas: No, I do not. I'll try to ask Bell.
Rob: Hey, read we would see Greco at RG this week, still the case?
Also, any chance of seeing schuening this week at LG or Barron at LT now that Pace looks completely finished. Isnt that why we drafted him in the first place, to take over for Pace, lets see what he can do at LT, if not now then when? or have we given up on this completely?
Jim Thomas: As mentioned earlier, Incognito's MRI checked out OK, and he's expected to start at RG this Sunday agianst Chicago. Not Greco.
As for Barron at LT, if he's struggling to get it done at RT, what makes you think he will play better at LT?
stlouieram41: Im glad to see Haslett has learned from his past mistakes of sticking with a quarterback too long(see Arron Brooks) and is going with Green this week, oh no, wait a minute, never mind....
Jim Thomas: Nice.
cappy22: Jim, it's the perception of the long time Ram fans that this is the most gutless team the Rams have ever put on the field. They are certainly not the least talented the Rams have ever had, but certainly never remembering a team that had less heart. So obviously it starts from the top down, but if the players won't play for a spot on this team next year ( I can't understand why anyone would want to) What will motivate these guys in the remaining weeks. or do we just go through the motions and clear house next season and start from Scratch?
Jim Thomas: It certainly looks hopeless on several levels. Many of these players will be looking for jobs by late February, early March.
kumuhunter: Hi Jim,
Since you know the environment better than us, if you were the GM next year:
What positions would your first three draft picks fill in order of priority?
Would you keep Haslett as your head coach, and if not, who would you try to get? Cowher? Jimmie Johnson? Carroll?
Thanks
Jim Thomas: Let's not limit ourselves to the draft. Subject to change, here's how I'd rate the top 10 needs via draft or free agency: 1. Offensive tackle. 2. Offensive tackle. 3. Running back. 4. Middle linebacker. 5. Center. 6. Safety. 7. Cornerback (this could move way up priority list if Bartell isn't re-signed. 8. QB of future. 9. Wide body DT. 10. Fullback
Allen: I hope people realize more and more that rebuilding this team will be a 2 or 3 year process at least. Too many people think they're great armchair GM's because they can put together a great Madden franchise. That being said, besides the obvious (C. Long, Otogwe, the young recievers), are there any players either on the team or on the practice squad that have the potential of being a future solid player? Any thoughts if Darby could be a future main HB? Thanks Jim.
Jim Thomas: I doubt that Darby has the size to be an every down player. But he has shown that he just might be a nice change of pace/third-down back. (But we need to see more; we're talking about a very small sample size.)
bobfreeber: Why doesn't Al Saunders get more criticism from the media? His offense has been, well, pretty terrible all season. If Haslett is retained, what are the chances Saunders stays? Heck - even if Haslett isn't retained, what are the chances Saunders stays?
Jim Thomas: While some of Saunders' play-calling deserve scrutnity, especially the lack of passes thrown over the middle, I don't think he had anything to do with Jackson's holdout, Jackson's injury, the players currently blocking on the offensive line, the decision to sign the current starting fullback, Torry Holt's knee, the decision to sign Drew Bennett, Randy McMichael's season-ending injury, the lack of a viable backup running back. And I don't know how much of Bulger's struggles he should be responsible for, either.
Sol: Hi Jim, first time here, Rams fan from Hawaii, since '77, I think that this team may actually be the worst I have ever seen. Do you agree? It seems that basic football knowlege/skill, etc. are lacking(tackling, blocking, defense angles,... ) My son's 3rd place peewee team seems to be more focused. What is it gonna take to turn this thing around?
Aloha,
Sol
Jim Thomas: Leadership and direction from the owner; clarity and unity of purpose in the front office; a couple of good offseasons.
Bald_81: Jim,
By going BPA in the draft does that mean we would still take a QB like Stafford or Bradford over an OT? I believe if Oher or Smith are gone (unlikely because we will be picking very high) then we should go BPA, but wouldn't top money invested in two QBs prevent the team from being competitive?
Jim Thomas: Well, if the Rams front office feels one of those guys is truly a franchise quarterback, I would say yes. But I doubt very much if that's the case.
Brian: Hi Jim -
Donnie Jones has gotten praise as the one shining player on the Rams. However, a closer look at the numbers shows a serious flaw that I attribute to poor coaching. Jones’ gross average (49.0) is 2nd in the NFL only to Oakland’s Shane Lechler (49.4). However, Jones’ net average (40.7) ranks 11th in the NFL. In past years, the Rams’ net average has been pulled down by big returns (often multiple touchdowns), but that hasn’t happened this season. So I dug into the numbers and found that the percentage of punts returned (return rate) was 75%, a whopping 10% above the next highest team (Denver at 65%), and 26% above the NFL average. A high return rate could be interpreted as having slow or poor-tackling gunners, but the better explanation in this case is poor punting fundamentals, either a lack hangtime (a better measure would be hangtime/yards) or directional punting. Holding the Rams’ yards yielded per return at 11.1, the Rams would have saved 165 yards of field position so far this season by reducing the punt return rate to the NFL average of 49%. One could argue that higher punts or directional punts would reduce the gross average, but I suspect that the average yards per return would also go down. In short, even though Donnie Jones has a big leg, he should not be thinking Pro Bowl (Carolina and 49er punters have done better), and, more importantly, the Rams coaching staff needs to have higher standards.
Jim Thomas: I don't know what stats you're looking at, but Jones is tied for third in the latest NFL stats with a net average of 40.4.
dfwramsfan: JT,
The Rams are in desperate need of a quality large run stuffing DT to clog the middle allowing our undersized LBs to make some plays. Who might be available via draft or FA? I realize we have many needs OT at the top of the list, but stopping the run or the lack thereof has to be addresed?
Jim Thomas: Do you mean someone like Ryan Pickett?
Albert Haynesworth of Tennessee is scheduled for unrestricted free agency.
Petey123: Jim, with the uncertain future of the Rams in St. Louis, I think its hard to justify fans buying tickets for a team that could possibly leave the city. To me it seems if Chip could give assurance that even if he sells the team it will still be in St. Louis beyond the 2015 season would go a long ways in restoring fans confidence. Just my 2 cents.
Whats your prediction for the Rams after the 2015 season? Thanks
Jim Thomas: Chip has consistently indicated that IF he sells the team, having an owner who would keep the team in St. Louis is a precondition.
YoMurphy: Is anyone actually happy we "saved ourselves" by getting Fakir Brown resigned? Maybe Linehan was onto something when he dispatched this completly undisciplined, rattle-brained excuse for a corner. He can't keep his feet when he gets jammed, he appears to be physically shrinking like every other player on defense, and I have never seen such bad tackling from a Rams corner. I will always watch games, but with Bartel out, I think we will see Kyle Orton look like the reincarnation of Johnny Unitas this week. Any hope for our back up corners? I hate to say it, but do we have to draft a corner in the first three rounds next year? That would make me very sad.
Jim Thomas: I don't think anyone ever claimed that re-signing Brown would save the season. But I do have to admit, he hasn't played very well since he's been back.
Gary Nguyen: Jim,
Do you think the Rams may select Center Alex Mack from Cal and build the Offensive Line from center on out? And if they don't select him in the first round, what are the chances that he will be there in the second? The Rams missed their Center two years ago in Ryan Kalil, who's on the Panthers roster.
Jim Thomas: They took Brian Leonard over Kalil.
Entreri10: Hey Jim,
Love the chats. Assuming the team doesnt get sold this offseason, who do you see as our gm next year? Do you think well see a new face, or will Devaney get a chance? thanks.
-Dennis
Jim Thomas: I think Devaney has the inside track and deserves a chance.
Brian: LB has the be the top priority in the offseason, right? They make stars out of every opposing RB. Look for Forte to have a monster game on Sunday. I think Hightower has about 30 total yards in the two games since the Rams defense put him on the map. Julius Jones went over 100 yards earlier in the season and hasn't been close since.
Jim Thomas: I still feel o-line is the top priority (particularly OT/C), but LB certainly would be No. 2 or a close No. 3 behind running back.
Superram13: Jim, I am wondering what kind of cap "hit" the Rams would have if they purged the contracts of Bulger, Pace & Bennett and started fresh next year with a younger, hungrier group?
Jim Thomas: These numbers are if players are cut or traded by June 1:
Bulger: $8 million (unamortized signing bonus), plus $3 million of '09 salary guaranteed.
Bennett: $5 million (unamortized signing bonus).
Pace: $3 million (unamortized signing bonus).
Now keep in mind, the Rams would save some base salary by cutting or trading the three players, but the cap hits would still be subtracted from the overall cap for '09.
Andrew: If Haslett does comeback next year.. Do You see the Defense becoming a 3-4?
Maybe draft a middle linebacker. Have Long Witherspoon Rookie Tinoisamoa as the linebackers. With Carriker Ryan and Little on the Line.
Jim Thomas: No.
ADK Ramfan: Hi Jim,
trivial questions:
Who on the Rams is the strongest/toughest physically?
Who is the strongest/toughest mentally?
Any idea on why Culberson has taken steps backwards this year?
Are any of our Rams castoffs/cuts making an impact anywhere else.
PS - I want a big, hard-hitting MLB for Xmas!
Thanx
Jim Thomas: I wouldn't say Culberson has regressed. After all, he only started one game last year. That's not much of a sample size. I would just say he hasn't progressed.
RochesterRamsFan: I am not a Steven Jackson hater, I love him, but I can get where fans fet frustrated with him. I think the problem is we see guys on other teams toughing it out thru the year with injuries that sound much worse than a "thigh bruise". But then we have to watch Jackson on the sidelines and in some cases not even making the trip. Is it unfair to expect him to tough it out when he makes crazy jack? We watch other guys on other teams tough it out all the time!
Jim Thomas: Jackson stayed back because he was seeing a specialist at the request of Haslett.
In his six years as starter, Marshall Faulk played all 16 games just once.
Brian: Did something happen in the locker room at halftime of the Arizona game? I was at the Washington game and was excited about the energy on the sideline throughout that game. It carried over to Dallas and New England, but it seems like they packed it in after giving up a couple quick scores to the Cards before the half.
Jim Thomas: Wish I had the answer to that one. There's no doubt the trap door opened in the second quarter against Arizona.
Murat from Pitt: Dear Jim;
I do not think this is a big issue but what happened to the center we drafted last year? Dustin Fry? Why has he not been given a chance to gain some valuable experience that may help him next year?
Thanks as always,
Murat
Jim Thomas: He was cut from the practice squad a few weeks ago.
jccardinalfan: For some reason, I beilieve that I remember a quote from Tory Holt during training camp or the preseason that said..."this is the most talented Rams team that he has been a part of..."
Really? If that is the case, then you have no where to look but the coaches! But, I don't believe that there is much talent there! I don't blame coaches that have no talent to work with! This is the worst football team that I have ever seen!
Where do we go at the end of the season?? What is going to happen?
Jim Thomas: I could be wrong, but I think it was Leonard Little who said that.
Torry Holt: Will I even be here next year? I don't want to even go through this again!
My fans: Look for another team that will at least compete and give you your money's worth!
Jim Thomas: Torry--I'd say it's 50-50 on whether you'll be back. I don't blame you for not wanting to go through this. For a decade, you have given the Rams everything you could without being a prima donna, and with a smile on your face. I do think the fans realize all that you have contributed over the years.
gabriellas: Vince
Only Jackson has any trade value. The rest of the roster you couldn't give away. Jackson is NOT a franchise back (although he is paid like one). With or without him, Rams are not that good. Any chances Jackson is dangled in the offseason?
Jim Thomas: The Rams have no interest in trading Jackson. Even if he did, the cap hit would be big because they just signed him.
Jason Carolina Rams fan: Jim,
Do you think the Jay and the Rams considered how much Steven Jackson is out with injuries when they gave him the big contract extention? He is a good player but seems like we pay him an awful lot for 1/2 a seasons work. Just my thought.
Jason
Jim Thomas: He hadn't missed many games when they re-upped.
Jim Everett: With Bulger playing so poorly does this increase my ranking in terms of best quarterbacks in Rams history?
Jim Thomas: Enough already. Talk to you all next week.
