Jim Thomas Live
The Rams beat writer goes one-on-one with readers from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday in a live chat.

adam neil: How much cap space are we scheduled to have for 2009? Is the NFL going to raise the cap this year? What do you think the trade value is for Holt or Pace?
Jim Thomas: The salary cap for 2009 is expected to go up to at least $123 million, an increase of about $6-7 million from '08. The latetest figures I have on the Rams _ and they're pretty old _ is that the team had $91 million committed in salaries for 31 players in 2009. So they'll have some room, and of course you can always create room by restructuring contracts or cutting certain players.
Why do you want to trade Holt and Pace?

cyclone77: JT, thank you. Love your insights, hate the Rams 08 play.

Please help me out here with a few questions.

1) Wasn't Haslett HC in New Orleans with OT Kyle Turley's melt down ? Maybe this adds a few answers in his support of OG Incognito.

2) A few comments on Rams getting all the blame in FA, draft etc.
A) MLB Fletcher leaving a huge mistake done by Martz.
B) DT Pickett leaving, the Rams had a offer on the table for
more than what GB signed him for. He just wanted out that bad.
C) FB Hedgecock his play was awful until he got cut and a light
came on. This happens alot in the NFL. Some players have
to be cut for this to happen.
D) WR Bruce signed with SF for the same money the Rams offered.
SF offered a 2nd yr but if he doesn't perform he'll never
see it. Not worth the paper it's written on. He just
wanted back with Martz. Hasn't earned it in SF either.
E) WR Bennett signed for the same money Curtis got from Eagles
All they now talk about in Philly is how poor the Eagle WR
are. Poor Donovan no one to throw to. Again he wanted out
of SL. By the way both were bad decisions.
F) DT Lewis let go to Carolina. They choose him over Jenkins
and traded Jenkins.
Alot of bad moves by all including Martz, Linehan, JZ and all but still some of them left no matter what the Rams offerred they just wanted out.

Now the fans call for Bulger to be gone. Have we learned nothing from the Warner handling. It took 3 teams, 4 HC's and time to get him healthy and now he comes back a MVP again.

Thanks for letting me rant but you do not get this bad overnight and you cannot make FA's play where want out so bad. Plenty of blame to go around.
Jim Thomas: 1.) Yes Haslett was in new orleans at that time.
2A) Fletcher's leaving had NOTHING to do with Martz. Lovie Smith didn't like Fletcher and thought that Jamie Duncan would be better in coverage. This was Lovie's move all the way, although at the time the front office (Jay Zygmunt) felt the team could afford either Fletcher OR Little. They chose the pass rusher.
2B) Pickett didn't want out. I don't think the Rams even made an offer. But the fact is, they showed VERY LITTLE interest in re-signing him.
2C) Hedgecock has improved with the Giants, no doubt. But he wasn't playing awful at the time Linehan cut him. He was about a C+ player at the time.Linehan just wanted to bring in one of his guys (Richard Owens).
2D) Bruce offered to take his second paycut in three years to stay with the Rams. A PAYCUT, not a restructuring. But the Rams offered him less than even the $1 million "discount" Bruce was prepared to give the Rams. I think he went to San Fran for a little less than what he wanted ($4 million) to stay in St. Louis. There's no doubt Bruce isn't what he used to be. But he's still pretty good. He has 39 catches for 625 yards (16.0 yards per catch) and 6 TDs with the Rams. Anybody putting up those kind of numbers in St. Louis right now? I don't think so.
2E) The money was almost identical for both Curtis and Bennett. Curtis wanted to go somewhere where he could be a starter. But if he knew the Rams were going to offer $30 million (which they did for Bennett), I bet he would've stayed. Curtis has missed some time this year with a sports hernia injury. But he still has 26 catches for 288 yards and a touchdown. (To Bennett's one catch for four yards.) Now healthy, Curtis has four games to add to his totals; Bennett is done for the year. Since going to Philly, Curtis has 103 catches for 1398 yards and seven TDs. Since joining the Rams, Bennett has 34 catches for 379 yards and three TDs. Which do you think is the better deal?
2F) Jenkins is a high maintenance player with some weight issues. But the Jets are glad to have him. He's the anchor of the Jets defense. But I do have to say, Lewis is starting and playing pretty well for Carolina.

Terry Kucharski: What isn't there anything said about Saunders the offense coach? He was not that good with the Washington Redskins. Why don't the Rams talk about replacing Him?
Jim Thomas: Let's see, he's got no tight end. Basically three rookies playing a wide receiver. No fullback (even when he had one). The start running back and best player has missed half the season. The quarterback remains in a funk. The offensive line again has had its share of injuries and has frequently been overmatched. How much of this is his fault?
True, Saunders didn't light up scoreboards at Washington, but in case you didn't notice, after a quick start, the Redskins are falling back to the back. They are 14th in total offense at the moment.
Yes, some of Saunders' play-calling causes you to scrath your head. And you'd think some way shape or form, he could figure out how to get the ball in the end zone more often, particularly on those rare occasions when the team gets the ball in the red zone.

OCRich: 1. Is there any reason not to play Brock Berlin? Continuing to trot a mentally fried Marc Bulger out there isn't doing him or the team any good. See if he can play. We pretty much know Trent Green won't be around next year so there's no need to start him.
2. I sense a some lingering bitterness/anger from Haslett towards Jackson stemming from the first Arizona game. Now we get a "disagreement" about Jackson's playing time. What's the scoop?
3. (Commentary.) Bring back the gold pants! At least they'll look like teams that won games in the past!
4. Ever been tempted to take a swig of an, uh, adult beverage before doing these chats every week? As a fan I'm always tempted to drink before, during, and after games.

Thanks as always. You deserve to be sainted for doing this week in and week out. See you in Arizona! I can't wait to witness this team in person...
Jim Thomas: 1.) Trust me on this, if the Rams thought Brock Berlin was good enough to start, he would be starting.
2.) No. No. No.
Jackson is sensitive about criticism that his holdout affected conditioning. Haslett is a big boy; Jackson venting some steam ("I'm not gassed. . .I wish he'd quit saying that") is no big deal to Haslett. At least that's my sense of the situation.
3.) I agree. But I've been told the new owner isn't a fan of the gold pants. That's why you're not seeing them.
4.) Not tempted. But if a team ever drove a person to drink, I think this would be the one.

Gabriel 2 Snow: Hi Jim, I know the Bulger bashing will reach new heights. Here is my perspective. Been a fan for 46 years, never seen a QB that was less entertaining. This is an entertainment business, and I am afraid business will be bad until a new face is behind center. Bad cap hit, but that's just business sometimes. Fans don't want to wait until we've had 3 straight bad years of QB play to see change. Two is enough. Maybe Green isn't the answer and everybody says Berlin has no chance so don't play him. That kind of thinking would have left Kurt Warner on the bench and us without our only superbowl crown. We can't compare Berlin to Warner. We can't even grade him. Why? Only because he has never been given a chance! Play him, if he shows any promise bring him back to duke it out with two other QB prospects next year! At least THAT would be entertaining!
Jim Thomas: Did you watch the Cincy game last year?

Yorkshire Rams Fan: Hey Jim,

1)With the Rooney Rule meaning that the Rams have to interview minority candidates for the HC job, does this mean that anyone can apply? And if so, are we not better getting a new face with a fresh new approach than retaining any of this miserable coaching staff.

2)In all honesty, can you name anyone who has improved under the current group of coaches? It is a truly sad indictment that we are even considering retaining this staff.

3)Finally, IF Haslett is given the HC job for next year, will he retain Venturi as his DC or will he get a younger, more dynamic coach? Which other coaches are at risk of losing their jobs, given the fact that a number of them are Linehan hires?

Thanks,
Rich
Jim Thomas: 1.) Well, yeah. The Rams can interview anyone they want for the job.
2.) Are you forgetting about Atogwe and Bartell? They didn't even play much under the old staff.
3.) Venturi. (My sense is that Haslett would retain most of the current staff. Most, but not all. I don't want to get into who might not stay.)

West Coast Ram: Jim,
I asked several years ago about the use of audibles in the offense and was told that Mike Martz didn't allow Bulger to change the play at the line. I still don't see any changes to the plays when blitz or coverage schemes appear to dictate for one. I'll ask again, why is there not more audibles in the Ram's offense? Is it due to Bulger's inability to recognize the defense and call the correct play? Or is it that everyone is suppose to read the blitz/coverage and adjust on their own. It is so great to watch a QB like Peyton call his own plays at the line of scrimmage. A return to that style would really separate the QBs from the ball throwers.
Jim Thomas: How do you know when the Rams are audibling or not? If you do, send me a breakdown. I'd like to know myself.

dominic zappia: Hey Jim:
Hope you enjoyed your Thanxgiving holiday! I know you get the same questions and comments each week, but I truly think that the Rams arent that far off with the RIGHT moves getting done. After clearing out high priced vets to clear cap space,my first move is going after Jordan Gross and put him at right tackle. With Carolina commiting big bux to Chris Gamble and Julius Peppers being a free agent too,I think we have a chance. And do you feel that Torry Holt is gone after this year? And what does your gut tell you about Haslett being retained? I think this will be a very exciting offseason!
And if both junior quarterbacks came our for the draft and they were sitting there when the Rams drafted, would you?
Thank you!
Jim Thomas: It's way too early to get hung up on potential free agents from other teams. They have a way of being taken off the market between now and March. Gamble already has signed a six-year contract extension with the Panthers. The Panthers can use the franchise tag on either Gross or Peppers, and concentrate on signing the other one.
Don't know what junior QBs your talking about, but as I said last week, I'd have to be convinced that any first QB was the second coming (of Peyton Manning) before I expended that high of a pick on him. As for Torry coming back, I'm not sure. Right now, I'd say 50-50.

smackuprams: bulger is playing badly....in your own mind, why hasn't haslet bench him yet..he's hurting mentaly....this just cant keep going on like this,,can it?
Jim Thomas: Did you see Trent Green against the Bears?

James Griffin: Jim,

Your thoughts on the CB situation? I get the feeling Wade, Hill, King, Bartell (presuming he is resigned - please!) are in the plans for next season. Who would be the others on the roster that the rams might try to keep around. Do you feel that they believe they need a starting CB?

The best projected FA CB is DeAngelo Hall and he is a bum and since they seem destined to spend the first pick on an OT, unless they select a CB at the top of round 2 I can't see it being worth taking one. Otherwise it would just be another one to throw onto the pile of Hill, Wade and King as young corners who need developing.
Jim Thomas: I'm going to address this somewhat in a story for this coming Sunday. Bartell needs to be re-signed. He's improved a lot. I'm not saying he's a Hall of Famer, or anything, but he's pretty good. A hard worker. Smart player. I think he'll continue to get better. Hill needs to get his confidence back. Wade still has a long ways to go at corner. The Rams liked what they saw of King early in camp, but that's all they have to go on after his injury. They would consider re-signing Brown and Craft but only if the price is right.

4thandJuan: Jim,

With Jay Zygmunt now being a short-timer, is he able (or willing) to work on contract extensions for Ron Bartell and OJ Otogwe?
Thanx for your time.
Jim Thomas: Interesting question. And one that'll be part of my Sunday story.

Bryan: It's not possible to cut Bulger, but do you think the Rams will attempt to renegotiate his contract so they could free up more cap space? Also I hear Torry isn't happy playing for the Rams and wants out, is this true?
Jim Thomas: This early in a contract, restructuring won't help a whole lot.
I haven't heard that about Torry, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me. If you were being phased out of an offense, wouldn't you be unhappy?

Eli Karkar: Are the rams ever going to put incognito in the center, dump leckey, and put Greco in at guard?
Jim Thomas: In the final analysis, Incognito may be too much of a hothead to play center over the long haul. (It's hard to make line calls when you're cussing at a defensive tackle.)The Rams think he's better suited to guard.

Gary: What are the chances the Rams will be able to trade Bulger in the offseason? The fans no longer support him in St Louis!
Jim Thomas: None. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

dennyo: Will Mizzou's William Moore make it to the second round in the NFL draft and do the Rams have an interest in drafting him?
Jim Thomas: I think there are some in the scouting department who like him. But he sure didn't help himself this season. I know he's had the ankle problem. But he looks slow, has been a liability in coverage from what I can see watching the games on TV and hasn't made many plays.

studebaker: I saw Haslett quoted in the Post today that the plan going in to the Miami game was to use Darby and Pittman on third down. This seems crazy to me. They even did this early in the game. In fact SJ was on the bench when it was first and goal from the 7 yard line on the first drive!! What's going on?
Jim Thomas: In case you've been out of town and missed it, Jackson was hurt. He played Sunday at maybe 85 percent, 90 percent. The Rams are trying to have Jackson last all five games at the end of this season. After being in for only seven touches (and about 15 plays) since Oct. 19, the Rams knew Jackson wouldn't be able to handle a full workload. They were hoping to get 15 to 18 touches out of Jackson against Miami; they got 22 touches. By my count, Jackson was in for 41 plays against the Dolphins. (To 18 for Darby and 15 for Pittman). The plan going into the game was to use Darby _ who's quickly proven to be a good pass catcher and a very good blocker on blitz pickup in pasisng situations.

Not having Jackson in on first-and-goal from the 7 was maddening. But Jackson had carried or caught the ball on five of the Rams' first seven plays of that game-opening series. After a 16-yard gain on a pass play, Jackson took himself out of the game for a breather. That's when Pittman came in for one play (a 2-yard gain) on first-and-goal from the 7. Jackson was back on the field for the next two plays, but didn't get a handoff. (Or a pass thrown his way.)

Rich: Good afternoon Jim,

Do you expect the Rams to spend a high draft pick (second or third round) on a RB in next year's draft?

Personally I expect the Rams to spend two draft picks on RBs - one on a true back up for Jackson and another one on an honest to goodness straight ahead blocking FB.

Pittman has shown flashes; however, he has at times been wildly inconsistent in production and the dropped passes and missed blitz pick-ups haven't exactly helped his cause.

Leonard has been hurt two seasons running and doesn't seem to be a good fit at RB or FB.

Travis Minor is an excellent special teams guy and decent runner; however, nobody is going to mistake him as a starting RB.

Thanks for these chats.
Jim Thomas: There are four more games to sort things out at running back. But I do think Darby is gaining quickly on Pittman because of Darby's ability to catch the ball and block on blitzes. The Rams love Pittman's heart and effort. But he's a small back, without breakaway speed, and who has trouble catching the ball. (He had two costly drops against Miami _ both on passes that probably would have gained 10 or more yards.) But at most, Darby is a third-down back and the No. 3 running back behind Jackson and a back to be added. Whether this back is added in the draft or free agency remains to be seen, but I believe this is a big priority for the team.
And yes, the Rams needs a blocking fullback. Daniel Fells has four games to impress them in that role. So far, I'd say his blocking has been so-so at best.

den-the-coach: Jim,

Thanks again for the forum...If Haslett does not win two more games, do have any insight into where the Rams will look for their next Head Coach? High Profile Coordinators like Steve Spagnuolo (Giants) and Jim Schwartz (Titans) should be on the short list, but any others that might peak the interest of future Ram GM Billy Devaney?
Jim Thomas: I guess those would be two good places to start. I think Marty Schottenheimer would get some consideration, although his asking price might be too high. Myabe Ron Rivera gets another look. He was the runner-up last time.

Brock Landers: Jim: The red zone woes can be addressed this way. They are never there enough to be good at it. 19 times in 12 games? pathetic. Really though, the problem is 2 fold. The Rams don't have a consistent rushing game which is necessry near the goal line. They also have smallish wide receivers that can't use their strength to get separtion near the end zone. They get pushed around and knocked off their routes like flies hitting a window.

The needs of this team are so monsterous it will take years to fix. Here's my question. who is going to fix this? If they make the playoffs by 2011 it will be a small miracle.

Brock
Jim Thomas: Not that it'll be easy. But it can be done quicker than you think. Much quicker. Look at the Jets, the Dolphins, the Falcons, the '99 Rams.

Cory- Parker Colorado: JT,

The Rams seem to have a problem drafting and siging good linemen on both sides of the ball, except for a few players recently like. Are the Rams looking at bringng in a better scouting service for the college scouting and pro scouting departments to improve this?
Jim Thomas: One of the problems is they have depended WAY TOO MUCH on a scouting service (Giddings) in the past. Devaney does want to beef up the pro scouting department.

eddie c: Jim,
The last few weeks you were either hesitant to put much of the blame on Mark Bulger or reluctant to think the Rams should draft a QB in the first round. Regardless, I am hoping you can see the reality now. Bulger is a sinking ship, that will not recover! What's the point in waiting for the 2nd through 4th round for such a dire need, that is so vital to the teams success? (Jackson's always gonna miss 4-5 games a year, should that be an automatic giveaway, with Bulger at the helm?)
Jim Thomas: I was hesistant because I am not a fan. I'm a beat writer. It's not my job to ride a roller coaster of emotions from week to week. I try to look at the entire picture. Fans want to make final decisions on personnel every Monday. Just like the fans who were screaming for Simeon Rice two Septembers ago. Does Tim Hightower look like such a great fifth-round steal right now. (He's had 85 yards on 42 carries since his breakout game against the Rams on Nov. 2.)
One of Kurt Warner's biggest fans on the radio _ no names _ said he was washed up on the airwaves following a loss to the Rams two years ago.
How do you know that Bulger cannot recover. Warner did. It took several years, but Warner recovered. But I must admit, as each game comes and goes, it's looking more and more like the team must address a QB of the future in the draft. Bulger was not very good Sunday and has not been very good this year _ even with everything else going on around him. I just can't see using a top 10 pick on a QB with so many other needs unless as I've mentioned several times before you think he's the second coming. Flacco and Ryan are the exception. Most first-round QBs struggle before they get better or wash out completely. And last time I checked Baltimore (and even Atlanta) had a lot more going defensively then the Rams. They aren't in a position where they have to depend on a quarterback to win games for them. The Rams currently don't have that luxury.

Mick N.: I live out-of-town so I do not get to see the Rams on TV (which is a blessing these days). All my information comes from the written word. I have read coflicting reports on the performance of Carriker. Is he close to being a bust or does he have a chance to be a consistent NFL starter? Also, if you were GM which defensive starters would you keep?

Thanx,
MN
Jim Thomas: Carriker suffered a major shoulder injury during the regular-season finale of 2007. He has played all this season with that injury about 85 percent. Just when he was starting to come on, he suffered a badly sprained ankle and kept playing on it. Against Chicago, he banged up his shoulder. Has his overall play in 2008 been a disappointment so far? Yes. Is he "close to being a bust?" No.

Petey123: Jim, if Haslett is not brought back do you think the Rams will keep Saunders? What exactly has he done to be brought back? I know the injury excuse is what fans will be given , but this guy was just as bad in Washington and got fired.

Saunders doesn't adjust to what the defense is giving him and his game plan makes no sense.

Sure Rams will go the cheap route and bring him back so they don't have to pay the remainder of his contract.
Jim Thomas: If Haslett isn't brought back, it's usually up to the new head coach to pick his staff. I don't think any head coach worth his salt would take a job without having the right to pick his own staff.
And by the way, the Rams would have to pay about $1.5 million to buy out Saunders contract for 2009.

Cory- Parker Colorado: JT,

Two questions.....

#1). Why, at 2-10, is Leonard Little (torn hamstring), Will Witherspoon(two hurt shoulders), and or to a lesser extent Steven Jackson (thigh), Adam Carriker (ankle) playing at this point. I would think that Jackson and Witherspoon are two of the building blocks in what the Rams will do in the next 4-5 years. And Leonard Little needs to consider that playing with this injury could effect what he does or the rest of his life after football. So why not shut these four down for the season, including Tye Hill?

#2.) The Rams are looking at a top 3 draft pick in the 2009 draft. There are 3 Offensive Left Tackles being projected to go in the top 10 of the draft. Oher from Ole Miss, Smith from Alabama, and Monroe from Virginia. How would you rank these three and is it a lock that the Rams will draft Orlando Pace's replacement with this draft pick?
Jim Thomas: 1.) Because they get paid to play and want to play. Little won't make his injury any worse by continuing to play.
2.) I think there's another OT the Rams like as well. Right now, I'd say the smart money is on draft an OT in Round 1.

Steve o' the north: Jim

I am perplexed by all the calls to draft more offensive linemen in early rounds. This team has so many weaknesses, and the offensive line has been one of the better units. No sacks last Sunday. I think we need a stud linebacker to juice the defense up. Sure, you can say other areas have needs - but the linebacker position has been basically ignored. I just think this is crazy. Why are people failing to discuss this as an urgent early round draft need?

Steve
Jim Thomas: Granted, no sacks Sunday. But have you been watching the games the past couple years?

Buzz: Jim,
Does there come a time when an owner realistically can't re-sign a coach because it would be too unpopular with the fan base? Ability aside, are we at that point with Haslett? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Not yet.

atommo: I read this on Rotoworld and wondered if you knew or heard anything about this comment. I watched Torry play on TV and thought he played hard.

"According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, there was talk on the sidelines of Torry Holt "begging out" of Sunday's Dolphins-Rams game.

Of course the Miami media has this situation better covered than the St. Louis rags. It's uncertain why Holt was begging out, but he played without any passion despite being the Rams' most oft-targeted receiver. There are strong indications that Holt is going to ask out of STL after the season."
Jim Thomas: I saw Holt on the field a lot. And playing hard. And playing with passion.
But I guess the Miami papers know better. . . .They were after all the papers that reported that Torry felt he was being phased out of the offense a month ago. Weren't they? Oh no, that's right. It was the Post-Dispatch. In fact, it was MY question to Torry. Now if a player thinks he's being phased out, do you think he's happy?
What other details did the Miami media provide? Did they quote Torry? I just don't see much of a scoop here.

Dave: Dear Jim,

What has happened to Marc Bulger? On Sunday protection was not the issue. He had time to throw. Obviously this is not the greatest show on turf any longer and he lacks the supporting cast, but Bulger's play the past two years shows a quarterback in a steep decline. I mean even Jamarcus Russel has a higher QB rating. You have often said in these forums that Bulger will be the starter through 2010 due to salary cap concerns. HOWEVER MY QUESTION IS AT WHAT POINT DO WE DISCOUNT THE SALARY CAP BECAUSE WE ARE BETTER OFF LOSING 10 MILLION DOLLARS THAN STARTING A QUARTERBACK WHO CANNOT LEAD US TO VICTORIES. WE CANNOT WRITE OFF THE NEXT TWO SEASONS JUST BECAUSE OF BUGLER'S CONTRACT MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim Thomas: I didn't necessarily say that Bulger will be the starter in 2009. I just said he'll be here.

NYC Rams Fan: Hi Jim,

I only saw the end of the game on Sunday, but I noticed that reports are that Bulger was protected well. I was wondering if, even though he was not sacked, he may have still been under pressure and taking more hits while throwing which would have affected him.

Also, are the young receivers still having problems with understanding their running routes in terms of where they need to be and the spacing between the other receivers in the pass patterns?

Finally, even if Bulger is Haslett's quarterback, when do the Rams think about starting to groom a young quarterback for the future?

Thanks again
Jim Thomas: I looked at the offensive tape last night (Monday night) and unless I missed it, he was hit only twice. He was hurried a few other times. But for the most part the protection was as good as it's been all season. Pace did an excellent job of Joey Porter.
Yeah, there are still some hiccups with the youngsters.
Of course, the Rams want a QB of the future. And with each bad game by Bulger that becomes more of a priority.

atommo: Given Devaney has a good eye for talent, do you think we'll trade down for more players given the way our No. 1 picks over the years have worked out for us?
Jim Thomas: I'm sure Devaney and the Rams will listen to all offers when the time comes.

Memphis Ram: Curious. In all of your years covering the team, have you ever suggested to Rams management that they take a look at a player? Did they and did they sign him?
Jim Thomas: Not really.

arnezzi: Jim, will you be doing your "unofficially annual" story anytime soon on which players will be restricted or unrestricted free agents? Will you be discussing (in that story or another one soon) who will have prohibitively high cap numbers next year? As long as we are going to start looking to next year, we might as well know who is likely to be here for financial reasons whether we like it or not. Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Coming soon.

Franklin: Oh Jim,

Dan Kreider. Done as a player? Or a bad fit for a team that doesn't much employ a traditional fullback?

It's me,
Franklin!
Jim Thomas: I'd say done as a player.

Big Jack: Jim,

There is little point discussing offense, defense, personnel etc.....They are all so bad that there is practically nothing to discuss. The team excels at one thing...FAILURE. What do you see as the future of this team. Do you see new ownership and if so, when ?? Do you honestly believe that the rams will stay in STL. We all know how bad the NFL wants a team in LA. Right now we have an awful team and little to no hope that anything will change for the better any time soon or any time later. What does your crystal ball tell you??
Jim Thomas: If there's nothing to discuss, why am I staring at about 200 questions right now?
Don't think the team gets sold soon _ not in this economy.
Something must be done to upgrade the dome. The league won't move a team to LA without a new stadium.

Steve B.: JIm: What is your take on the liklihood that Holt will be a Ram next year?
Jim Thomas: As I mentioned earlier, I'd say 50-50 at this point. It's one thing to say Holt is declining, the Rams could do better, etc., etc., it's another thing to get someone who's better. I think it's a big leap of faith right now to automatically think that Avery (very quiet lately), Burton, Stanley, and Drew Bennett are the answer next season.

jon in kentucky: Thanks your time Jim, who would you rather have, Haslett or Jack Del Rio? Not saying we will get him but just out of curiosity?
Jim Thomas: Don't know much about Del Rio. He seems pretty full of himself.

Steve B.: Jim:
I'd be interested on your take on the play of Pisa this year. He's come into his share of abuse on the sports board I frequent. He does lead the team in tackles, but it seems to me he leaves a lot of plays on the field too. There's a lot of talk that Spoon might go to WILL backer next year, which would leave him out of a job. Any chance he might be released in a cap move?
Jim Thomas: I love Pisa's attitude, his heart, his hustle, his passion for the game. He's very fast. He's also about 220 pounds. And unless you're running a Cover 2 and have a dominant front four, that's an issue. The Rams obviously have neither. So you raise a good question. I don't know what happens to Pisa if Witherspoon moves to the weakside. There's a $3 million cap hit if he's cut or traded by June 1.

surewaytofixtheoffense: Jim,
what are the differences in the offensive system sauders runs vs mad mike?
i was very optimistic when saunders was hired but the offense is still struggling. if martz can make the system work with kitna (detroit), o'Sullivan, hill (SF) i would think he would have the best shot of turning Bulger around. i hope Chip realizes this and gives Martz another shot either as HC or OC...
Jim Thomas: Martz as OC? Now that's a thought.

Monish: Jim - Not sure if this has been discussed, but is there any chance we will get to see what we have in Brock Berlin this season?
Jim Thomas: Barring injury or mopup situation: None.

Thad: Hi Jim, thanks as always for taking the time to answer our questions.

I am really concerned about the future of the Rams in St. Louis. Everyone keeps talking about trying to get good free agents and signing a big name coach. I'm sorry, but I just don't know who would want to come here, even aside from any ownership issues. I think Benjamin is about the only person who could lure big names here any more.

The game day experience at the Dome is horrendous, and I'm being generous there. At the Bears game, the loudest cheer was for someone in the military who was announced over the P.A., and during the stoppages all you see are commercials. I don't know what's worse, hearing "I don't want to work" when the Rams score a TD, or NOT hearing because they can't score a TD! I mean, the Cardinals eventually quit playing "Celebration". How has someone not lost their job over this? The Rams idea of pumping up the crowd was to try a drum line and to keep track of false starts, which they apparently were oblivious to the fact that the Rams offense is the most guilty party of that penalty.

What are your thoughts on the Rams management with regard to these issues (game day experience, future of the dome and the team in STL, future free agent signings, etc.)

Thanks
Jim Thomas: The Rams have made some sincere efforts to improve the game day atmosphere. I think a more competitive football team would work wonders.
As for luring a coach and/or free agents, there are only 32 of these franchises in the world. It's not McDonald's _ there's not one on every corner. Money talks. It may take a little more money given the current state of the franchise, but the Rams should be able to hire quality people with a good game plan and lots of preparation.

Rams fan in Toronto: Hey Jim,

I am a Rams fan living in Toronto and in an article in our National Newspaper, The Globe and Mail, on the Buffalo Bills and Ralph Wilson it was mentioned tangentially that Chip Rosenbloom and his sister have just recently stepped up efforts to sell the Rams. Have you heard similar rumblings?
Jim Thomas: Haven't heard that.

elderamfan: Again, looking towards next year, how is Randy McMichael recovering from injury? As for the Rams always picking poor talent, we have let go a lot of talent: London Fletcher, Ryan Pickett, Dre Bly, Kevin Curtis, Brandon Chillar, Madison Hedgecock, Jerametrius Butler, Travis Fisher, Bryce Fisher, I even saw Scott Shanle playing for somebody, Ryan Fitzpatrick (not a bad backup). We need to keep some of these guys.
Jim Thomas: Haven't really seen much of McMichael in the locker room lately. But all indications are that his rehab is going fine and he should be good to go in '09.

bob: In my opinion what the Rams need is a new face for the franchise. Back in the late 90's early 2000's they had Warner, Faulk, Bruce, Wistrom, Fletcher Martz to name a few. They all seemed to be people you could connect with in some way or relate to. Now you have Jackson, who criticises fans and holds out training camp just to get hurt and Bulger who is whiny and demonstrates no leadership. Is there a person on this team who fans can call the face of the franchise?
Jim Thomas: Good point. I don't see one. Do you?

Kevin in NJ: Hi Jim,
Do you think Faulk would somehow work out in the front office to try and reestablish some kind of pride?
Remember I asked before the season if I should bother getting the NFL ticket? Well, I wish I did 'cause now when I go out to watch the games everybody knows I'm a Ram fan, and I'd rather be hiding at home.
Jim Thomas: What would you have Faulk do?

1parrothead: Just Curious, this discussion header shows Marc Bulger wearing a Gold jersey... Have the Rams worn those since moving to St. Louis or are they considering them ?
Jim Thomas: Are you sure that isn't a practice jersey? (QBs wear yellow in practice.)

BrotherBri: Thanks for all you do for the far provinces of Ram Nation.

1. Can you tell us the full status of Carriker's health? Is he going to be ready and able to tackle a full offseason of bulking up to the size and strength he needs to take his game to the next level?

2. What is your take on Culberson? Is it time for Chamberlin to get some snaps and start his learning process?

3. Can you give us a detailed evaluation of Greco's play Sunday? Does it give you faith that he can grow into a starting role, if needed, next year?

4. Is Schuening making any progress toward playing in the NFL? If so, is there ANY reason at all why he shouldn't get a chance to learn on the job? I realize that Bulger and Jackson will lose stats if that happens, but don't the Rams benefit by (a) a healthier offseason for Bell and Cogs, AND (b) Rams rookies learning to grow into the big time -- or whether their players can't do that, AND (c) losing more and getting the higher draft pick?
Jim Thomas: 1.) See earlier answer on Carriker. It's way to early to write him off. P.S. _ he's pretty bulked up right now.
2.) Culberson has been a disappointment. He's blown some assignments, hasn't been great in coverage, and hasn't really been the physical presence that was hoped for. Chamberlain is small, and his position is weakside backer (Pisa's side); not strongside (Culberson).
3.) Greco was decent. Like Haslett said at his Monday press conference, he was better on pass protection than on run blocking. There were times to me when he looked a little uncomfortable and stiff at the guard position. Remember, he's always been a tackle, so this is new to him. But he didn't have any terrible plays, and certainly looks like he can play in this league.

Armen Dacity: Was Chris Long given credit for a sack when he tackled Pennington behind the line of scimmage after a botched snap? If not, why not?
Jim Thomas: He was not credited with a sack.
Because Pennington bobbled the snap, it was ruled an aborted play, and thus no sack opportunity.

insanely frustrated: For the life of me I don't understand a 2-9 team punting on 4th and 1. Please enlighten me and is there any way we draft a qb in the top 5 next year. What are the cap hits for cutting Holt and Bulger.
Jim Thomas: Couldn't agree with you more on the 4th and 1.
Sure it's possible. It's more possible if the Rams can shore up some other needs in free agency before the draft, and if they are truly sold on a QB as a franchise type player.
Cap hit for Bulger: $8 million, plus $3 million of his '09 base salary is guaranteed. (Total hit: $11 million)
Cap hit for Holt: $2.2 million

wwalker: what was the reasoning behind keeping berlin over gradkowski gradkowski started a number of games showed some ability and some definite toughness makes little sense to me evn to this day
Jim Thomas: Berlin was more accurate and played better in the preseason.
Is Gradkowski playing for anybody right now?

Zeke: Did the Rams have Tim Hightower, Rb Arizona, work out for them earlier this year? And if so what in the heck were they thinking not signing him? Did I hear this right or not? Thanks
Jim Thomas: Just a couple of weeks prior to the draft, teams are allowed to bring in 30 college draft prospects. Hightower was in this group. So the Rams were interested enough to bring him in. But as I mentioned earlier, he's struggled big-time since his breakout game against the Rams on Nov. 2 (42 carries for 85 yards), and there are now calls in the Arizona media to put Edgerrin James backin the starting lineup.

Ron: Jim, thanks for taking the questions. Mine is about Mr. Irrelevant, Can Linebacker Vobora solve our Middle Line Backer problem for good or only for a day ? He seemed pretty competent and the defence played better on Sunday....
Jim Thomas: He did OK, brought some energy, and has four more games to make a good impression. But at the end of the day, it's the same problem: He's not very big.

JDeGeorge: Jim,

Greetings. Have you heard anything about Justin King's recovery? Can we expect him back next year as a potential starting cornerback? Thanks.
Jim Thomas: I think he's on schedule. And he should be fine for next season.

Gabriel 2 Snow: with the cap hits we may take and the overpaid players we already have, cap/personnel management will be critical for this franchise to turn around. we also need more than a couple players. seems to me trading out of the overpaid early first round pick to get 2 or 3 picks for the same money should be strongly considered by the new braintrust. how do you see it Jim?
Jim Thomas: Yeah, but if you see a player who's truly a difference maker up there, you've got to take him.

Zeke: So if you had to do the 2005 draft over you still trading down for Ty Hill and not taking Cutler? No brainer I thought at the time to take Cutler. How close were the Rams to not trade down and take Cutler? Thanks for you time.
Jim Thomas: In my mind, the jury's still out a little on cutler. He's up-and-down like Denver. And throws a lot of INTs. (Only Favre has more this year so far) But obviously, he's been way more productive than Tye Hill.

artofthetrio: Will Jackson be ready to go all out, 100%, for a full game next week?
In your opinion, does Marc Bulger have "battered QB syndrome" and is he playing scared?
Jim Thomas: Jackson will play next week, but the thigh still isn't 100 percent.
Although I wouldn't say he's playing scared, I do think that Bulger has some BQS. He has made some bad decisions, and doesn't seem to be seeing the entire field.

Ramfrank: Hello Jim --

Question, sir: If you were a betting man, what do you think the chances are of Billy Devaney returning as GM/personnel man, as opposed to Chip bringing in a team president-type like Ron Wolf??

Finally, what are the odds of Haslett returning as HC at this point??
Jim Thomas: Devaney will be back.
Not sure on Haslett. These next four games may be meaningless to a lot of fans, but they're critical for him and his staff.

Young Ram: Have there been any thoughts on starting Berlin the rest of the way to see what he can do.He might not be the greatest in practice, but Bulger is and look how he looks on the fielg. Please don't put too much stock in practice.
Jim Thomas: No.

peoriaspitfire: It seems every pass to the endzone is targed for Holt who is sometimes triple covered. If Holt is getting doubled, is Avery getting open?

How much rest does SJ need? You think he would want to be in the game during redzone possesions, no matter how tired he was... I can't think of many RB's who wouldn't want to score a TD...
Jim Thomas: Avery's also getting doubled.
Players all over the league get gassed and come out for a play or two. And with five touches on the first seven plays _ after missing most of five games _ I could understand that Jackson was winded after a 16-yard catch and run.
But TDs and red zone trips are so rare, and Jackson was running so well at the start of the game, I would've called a timeout right there. Had plenty of time to come up with a good play to run down there, and let Jackson catch his breath.

Gotham Knights: Any talk of Brock Berlin getting a look this season?
Jim Thomas: No. This team, these coaches, these players are DESPERATE for a victory. If the coaching staff really thought Berlin was the answer don't you think they'd play him?

El Centro Ram Fan: Jim,

Thanks for these chats in another long and frustrating season (I've been a Rams fan for over 20 years, so I've seen my share). Anyway, my question is about the defense. In the past, there seemed to be a conscious decision to go for smaller, faster players because the Rams played in a dome. I think that has led to the defense being referred to as "soft", even in the GSOT days. Do you know if this way of thinking is still prevalent in the front office and whether Devaney subscribes to this philosophy?
Jim Thomas: Interesting thought. I've often thought the Rams to some degree have been left with some remnants of the Cover 2 model used by Lovie Smith here _ smaller, faster players. That type of player doesn't really fit what they're trying to do right now. I know for a fact that Devaney wants to get bigger _ across the board.

Fearsome: Hi Jim,

What's up with the playcalling, especially in the red zone? Also, with a playbook as thick as Saunders has, why are we so predictable? The Dolphins easily sniffed out calls.

I'll be in Arizona again at the hotel Sunday, see you guys there. I still have no idea why I'm driving from California to watch this train wreck, I need my head examined.
Jim Thomas: Something's got to change in the red zone.
You're coming because you're a true fan.

Fearsome: Hey Jim,

One more quick question: How come the Rams don't have a mascot? I realize there are FAR more pressing issues, but maybe some giant Ram running around can lighten the mood a little.
Jim Thomas: I'd love to see a mascot. Why not?

James Arnold: Jim:

What I find most troubling about bulger's play was the comments from the dolphins secondary--that he was not looking off and was locking in on the receiver and basically telegraphing it for the dolphins db's. this is basic stuff here for a nfl qb, why is it that he cannot even perform at a basic level? is bulger just totally burnt and just going through the motions?
Jim Thomas: The Dolphins comments are typical for a team that just won and picked off some passes. But for the most point I think they were right.h And that's disturbing.
Fried? Maybe. But he definitely is not going through the motions. C'mon. Do you think he purposely wants to go out and play lousy?

Young Ram: Jim you say look at the Cincy game, are you forgetting he did that with only one practice with the ones. You can't judge off that.I mean c'mon.
Jim Thomas: Again--If the coaching staff _ which is playing for their jobs _ truly thought he was the answer, don't you think he'd be playing?

Nitchke: Jim:

Terms of player contracts seem to not be published. The most info that I can come up with on Bulger is as follows:
$65m overall for six years (not beginning in 2007 when signed, but rather in 2008 through 2013); $27M guaranteed (presumably all in signing bonus); $9m against the cap this year; No info on per year and whether it is backloaded

Question: Do you have any info on salary per year, amount of signing bonus prorated per year (and the years in which it is prorated) and bottom line, amount of cap hit in 2009 and each of following years through 2013.

Thanks.
Jim Thomas: Here's the breakdown for Bulger, with base salary listed first, followed by proration, and then cap number:

2009: $6.5 Million ($3 million of which is guaranteed); $2 million; $8.5 million
2010: $8.5 Million; $2 million; $10.5 million
2011: $9 Million; $2 million; $11 million
2012: $9 Million; $2 million; $11 million
2013: $11.5 million; zero; $11.5 million

renz's rams: Jim,
you keep saying Bulger can't be cut, but he CAN. Lets just eat the cap hit NOW with the cutting of pace, little and holt in the last year of those contracts we can offset his being cut and really players over 33 are not going to be good when this team gets good again....
Jim Thomas: Let's say you cut all four of those players by June 1. If that's the case, you're still on the hook for $24.3 million in "dead" money _ or prorated signing bonus. Do you really want to start out in that kind of hole?

Petey123: Is Chip in this for the long haul if he can't find a buyer that is willing to keep the Rams in St. Louis?
Jim Thomas: To be determined.

GoRams2001: Jim,

You've been watching the NFL (not just STL football) for a long time. Many STL sports media-types say this is the worst football they have EVER seen in STL. In your experience, how does this rank overall? Are there any parallels to previous terrible teams that we can draw hope from?

Thanks so much for your time today.
Jim Thomas: In my opinion, it's the worst. And I saw the Missouri teams of the mid '80s (OU 77, Mizzou 0) first-hand as the Tigers beat writer.
