djjr11854: Jim,

I know I read it somewhere that Haslett wants the Head Coaching job in St. Louis. I say hire him even if he doesn't win two more games(which is HIGHLY unlikely). As I commented to an article earlier, it makes good sense to have him coach. He has already spoken with Chip and has ideas on whats needs to be done to fix this team. He knows the players now on both offense and defense. He knows who is just going thru the motions and who is busting their butts. A new coach won't have that knowledge and will have to start from ground zero. I like his fiery attitude and HE WANTS THE JOB!!
I don't know if there is another coach out there who does.

My question is what do you think his chances of getting the head coaching job will be if he doesn't win two more games?

As always thanks for you insights and have a great holiday!
Jim Thomas: Hello again everybody. Here we go. . . .
If he doesn't win two games, then I think it becomes more of an open job search. He becomes a candidate, but the Rams at least try to explore the market to see who's out there and who might be interested in coaching in St. Louis.

smackuprams: hi...when a player gets put on ir or suspension,i always wonder do they still pay him...how does that work....ty
Jim Thomas: There are specific guidelines in the NFLPA (the players' union) about discipline (and fines) for players. I'm sure a fine was involved for Barron's tardiness, although I don't know the amount.

Dave: Hey Jim,

This sunday I did something different while watching the Rams game. On every defensive series I only watched Chris Long and not the rest of the play. I was stunned. Long got no penetration, could not shed blockers on running plays, took bad angles and missed a few tackles, provided poor defensive containing and did not show balzing speed. was this an abberation or has Logn had other games like this. I'm not saying he;s a abust because I know it takes a few years to develp a top notch defensive end but I am not seeing the signs of an impact player as of yet. Your thoughts???
Jim Thomas: I haven't looked at the tape yet, but I don't think your eyes deceived you. It was not one of Long's better games. He did not have a tackle _ solo or assist. He did not have a QB pressure. Nothing. And this was according to the coaches' review of game tape. His play certainly has leveled off the last few weeks. He was playing much better a month ago.

Rampage: Hey Jim! So the Rams are in fact going to get rid of Zygmunt and Shaw after this season right? It is just so hard to believe they would actually finally do it. Also, any word on if we are going to hire a new team president and if so do you have a hunch on who it might be?
Jim Thomas: Between Bernie and I, we've mentioned this several times now. Although nothing is official at this moment, all signs point to Zygmunt being gone and Shaw staying on only on a consultant basis. My sense right now is that there may not be a team president hired. Devaney runs the football operation; Bob Wallace runs the non-football stuff at Rams Park (as he always has), you hire a cap guy (or two), beef up the pro personnel department, and off you go.

dominic zappia: Hey Jim:
I know as a big fan of you and your knowledge of the Rams while I read and listen to you on Bernies show,is there a chance that you can host a football show on sundays during the offseason on team1380? Similiar to what Balzer used to do on the radio.
And Im losing faith in Haslett, but I also believe with different players and him knowing what we need to succeed,he should get a chance.Your thoughts?
Jim Thomas: Maybe you could be my agent and set up an offseason football show. If nothing else, I'll be on plenty during the weekdays with Bernie during the offseason.
Obviously, the team's continuing swoon makes it tougher on Chip Rosenbloom to bring back Haslett. If the team finishes 2-14, it's going to be a tough sell to the fans. Saying that, Haslett gets it. I still feel he's a legitimate head coach. I still feel he has a better sense of the roster and what this team needs and doesn't need than any outside. But at the end of the day, will Rosenbloom feels he needs a complete fresh start? (One that would entail eating a few million dollars worth of assistant coaches' contracts.)

Tackleberry: Jim,

If Haslett doesn't win twice in the final three games (especially at home versus Seattle & San Fran) where does that leave Rosenbloom? Can he really still retain him? Will Chip issue one last ultimatum, like "if you aren't losing by 50 in the first half to Atlanta the job is yours next year"???? It feels like Rosebloom wants nothing to do with a new coaching search, yet it feels like a new coach may be the only way to turn this sinking ship around.
Jim Thomas: All good questions. All questions that I don't really have an answer for at this time. That's why these next two games are so meaningful for Haslett.

lawdog: Now that Vick is out of prison and our season is well into the toilet, any chance the Rams might release Green and take a flyer on Vick, assuming he can pass a physical, for next year. I imagine he could be had pretty cheap and he'd be interesting to watch run the football in tandem with Jackson. He could play real vanilla in the passing game and still be effective.

I'm more than half serious here. Two years in the joint on a charge like the one he went down on would humble the meanest of the mean. He might turn out to be a bargain that would turn the franchise around in a year or two instead of making us continue "waiting for Godot" for another 5 years with only a slim chance by then that we'll have strung together enough high end draft picks and hired an adequate head coach to have really begun the rebuilding of the franchise.

We'd just have to make sure that for the sake of players on opposing defenses, Michael has his rabies shots before game time.
Jim Thomas: I respect Vick's talent. But why would the Rams want to go there? Look at the troubles they've had with Claude Wroten, Dominique Byrd, Claude Terrell in recent years. Do you really want to go there? And how much will Vick's talents have eroded during his hiatus from the game?

OCRich: 1. Is there any concern with Donnie Avery's mental acuity? He's still not picking up sight adjustments. Is he just a rookie who missed most of training camp showing expected growing pains, or are they at all concerned?
2. Is Daniel Fells best suited for an H-back role as he is playing now or is he more of an on the line TE? Tampa didn't want to lose him, and I can see why. He's done well.
3. We were not "mocking" the Rams. We were simply trying to inject a little humor into what's been a Really Awful Miserable Season. You gotta laugh to keep from crying. (Yes, that was me in the Sean Gilbert #90 jersey and a friend in the bags.)

Thanks as always.
Jim Thomas: 1.)Avery just hasn't hit the rookie wall; it looks like he's slammed into at about 100 mph. I don't know about his mental acuity as you call it, but after 13 games, even in a complicated offense like this, you think there would be fewer missed hot reads and botched patterns.

2.)Fells probably is best suited for an H-back role, with occasional on-line duties at TE. He is a little on the small side to be strictly a line-of-scrimmage tight end. He must improve his blocking skills and show he can lead block effectively over these final three games.

3.) Hey, I appreciate the fact that you were there, supporting (kind of) your team. Are you a Rams fan from LA?

Kevin: Is coach pointing out certain players screw ups in public something that could back fire on him? I just wonder if it should be handled "in house"
Jim Thomas: It's always a fine line between holding players accountabile and fostering a sense of togetherness. (Of course, in the case of Mike Singletary, it didn't hurt the 49ers.)
In Barron's case, we all (meaning reporters) noticed that he wasn't getting any reps with the starters in practice Friday, so that would've come out anyway.
The Josh Brown thing is a little strange. Yes, they were costly misses, but in the grand scheme of things (blowout losses) did they really mean that much? And the guy still is hitting something like 83 percent of his kicks.

Rich: Good afternoon Jim,

I am glad to hear the Rams are finally listening the voices of reason and strongly considering moving an under-sized Witherspoon to the outside.

However, if they go through with this they will end up with two staring quality LBs on the weakside in Spoon and Pisa.

Which begs the question in that scenario will the Rams move Tinoisamo to the strong side or cut him loose all together?

Thanks for these chats.
Jim Thomas: I don't know the answer to that question. I would say either is a possibility. It's not a big cap cut if Pisa is released. The irony is _ he plays as much heart and passion as anybody on the team.

Jumbo J: Hey Jim,

I was just thinking of a couple possible scenarios. I might be way off base, but maybe not.

1.) Any chance Pisa can be moved to SS? Chavous is about done and Pisa is a small LB.

2.) Do you think we could move SJ this off-season to acquire draft picks? Does his new contract make it too cost prohibitive? Perhaps one of Philly or Detroit's 1st round picks?

Thanks for your time.
Jim Thomas: 1.) Interesting point. Martz considered it during the offseason a few years back. Although he's fast, I wonder if Pisa could cover well enough to play strong safety.

2.) Jackson isn't going anywhere.

vanvaley1: How many players have Rams taken from practice squads of winning and/or playoff teams in the last two years? van
Jim Thomas: This year, TE Daniel Fells was signed off Tampa Bay's practice squad; RB Kenneth Darby came from Atlanta's;

James: Jim,

I realize the draft is a long way away but this season is over and at least it gives me something to look forward too. My question is: if we end up with the 4th overall pick, what if the top rated OT's are already off the board? If that is the case will we trade down and try to fill more needs?

By the way, enough excuses for Bulger and Jackson. Bulger is not a guy that can make his team better, he needs people around him. Jackson held out and look what happens, injuries and inconsistent play. Blow the team up and start over. This is the worst Ram football team in our history. No one even tries anymore and losing has become an expected thing. I like Haslett but I don't think he is the one to lead us. We need a really respected outside guy to come in and lay down the law. Cut or trade everyone that has not performed and bring in guys that are hungry and have nothing to lose. At least the games will be more exciting!

Go Rams!
Jim Thomas: Obviously, a lot can change between now and April, but right now, the top three offensive tackles among seniors are: Michael Oher, Mississippi, 6-5, 320; Eugene Monroe, Virginia, 6-5, 315; and Jason Smith, Baylor, 6-5, 300.
The top underclassmen is Alabama's Andre Smith, 6-4, 340.

Rick: Aside from the mounting loses on the field, any update on Chip's thinking in regards to the front office changes ? Rumors of Devaney becoming the GM, and Chip hand picking Shaw's replacement are a few weeks old. What is the latest news on a new direction for the team at the top ?

Thanks,

From, Maine
Jim Thomas: I don't really think there's anything new to report. Again, I'm not sure a new president is named. (In other words, the Rams go without one.)

radjohns: Jim,

In your opinion what are the odds on each of the following people being with the Rams next season?

Torry Holt
Richie Incognito
Drew Bennett
Ron Bartell
OJ Atogwe
Orlando Pace
Jim Haslett

Thanks for your time.
Alex Barron
Jim Thomas: Holt: 50-50
Incognito: 75-25
Bennett: 65-35 (because of cap considerations)
Bartell: 75-25
Atogwe: 75-25

Rich: Good afternoon Jim,

Do you see the Rams going after a big name free agent linemen like Matt Birk or Jordan Gross?

I realize it's almost a given the Rams will spend their number one pick on one of the top three OTs. However, it's looking like Barron will never be more than an adequate RT (at least with the Rams) and Pace's body is rapidly wearing out. It is a possibility the Rams could be looking at new OTs on both sides.

And as for Birk, the Rams haven't had a steady presence in the middle of the line in a while. I see what Fancea did for the Jets this season and I can't help but think what a steady veteran like Birk would do the for the Rams.

Thanks for these chats.
Jim Thomas: Those are two real good names. (Then again, the Rams might have to get in line if both of those guys reach the market.)
Keep in mind, it's a long way between now and the beginning of March when the free agency period starts. Lots of guys that are projected free agents now will be off the market by then. Yesterday, there were reports that Dallas had re-signed OT Marc Colombo.
Yes, I think there's a chance the Rams could have two new starting tackles next season. Maybe you get one in free agency and one in the draft.

Please Not Haslett: Hello Jim,

I just finished reading your article and was compelled to ask you about your thoughts regarding Haslett's comments about PK Brown's missed field goals. Isn't that like the captain of the Titanic complaining that the musician's weren't playing well enough during the sinking?

I'm disgusted that Haslett has the stupidity to think I as a fan would buy into blaming a kicker for the part of the loss. Why didn't he make a point about the back breaking first defensive stand, or Bulger's interception return for a TD, or Jackson's 2 fumbles were bigger issues than a missed field goal. Or for that matter why the offense again can't get in the end zone and the defense continues to allow the other team to get into the end zone.

That comment alone by him gets me very dissappointed in him as the head coach. Let's find someone else to run this team next year.
Jim Thomas: I agree with you that it seems silly to blame the kicker for a 24-point loss. Especially a kicker who has missed only five kicks all year.

Ashamed Rams Fan: Wouldn't you think after the draft and signing of the wide receivers that they would be able to run the correct routes by now? How many months has it been? And that really is their only job? Study the darn playbook will ya, geez!
Jim Thomas: Agreed. It is a complicated offense. And I'm told there could be more done to help Avery.

TOMS RIVER RAM FAN: GOOD AFTERNOON JIM. IN YOUR MOST HONEST OPINION, WHOD DO YOU THINK WILL BE HEAD COACH NEXTS SEASON, AND DO YOU THINK IT IS TIME TO PART WAYS WITH BULGER?
Jim Thomas: It's a tough call as we sit here right now. I don't think the Rams have any chance to attract someone like Cowher or even Spagnuolo of the Giants. Schottenheimer, judging from his recent radio comments, seems pretty happy in "retirement." Hiring a coordinator off another roster always is a crapshoot.
As for Bulger, I think it's time to draft a quarterback of the future.

Tom: Hi Jim,

Thanks for your time. It is your opinion on Tim Tebow is he worth a 2nd round pick on draft day. He is a proven winner.

Thanks, Tom
Jim Thomas: You know, I haven't really studied the guy enough, or asked people about him. It's hard not to notice his won-loss percentage, however.

FLARamsFan: Hi Jim,

I have an important question that i would love to get answered by an expert. On one mock draft on the internet that i read showed the rams picking C.J. Spiller with their 3rd round pick. Now i know it's someone mock draft but i think that would be an excellent pick.

Then we would have that perfect combo. Sj running with the power and has speed, and then put Spiller in there running the ball with his amazing speed to give Jackson a break. Do you think there is a chance for us picking Spiller and do you think it would be a good pick. Please answer this question i would love to hear your input.

Thanks
Jim Thomas: I have not yet begun to study the draft, but will soon. So I don't know much about Spiller. This much I know: If the Rams aren't able to find a strong No. 2 running back in free agency, they will definitely try to fill that need in the draft.

lynyrd: Jim, My question concerns Jay Zygmunt. Maybe I'm missing something here but hasn't the common perception been that while he's a great negotiator of contracts and a salary cap whiz where Jay Z's gotten himself (and the team) in trouble is that he's had too much input in the personnel decisions of the team?

If that's the case why throw the baby out with the bathwater? What I mean by this is why fire him if you could just limit him to negotiating contracts and managing the salary cap and keep him out completely on any personnel decisions? Just a thought. Thanks!
Jim Thomas: Interesting point. But after basically running the football side for most of this decade, is Zygmunt willing to take a major step back? And beyond that, I think there's a feeling that some fresh faces and a fresh approach are needed.

Tshow: Jim,
I think you stated recently that you did not think that the Rams would hire a team president position, correct?
To the best of your knowledge, who will be leading the Rams coaching search at the end of the season?
Who will make the decision on the new coach?
Nobody wants Shaw and Ziggy involved one iota. Is this all going to fall on Devaney?

Thanks
Jim Thomas: Again, this is all subject to change, but my sense at this point is that there may not be a new president hired. I think Devaney would be the point man on any new head coach search as well.

Tshow: There has been some national media stating that Chip is "stepping up" the effort to sell as soon as possible. Any truth to these statements?
Jim Thomas: I haven't heard anything like that. And let's face it, this is hardly a seller's market.

COGzilla: Jim, i read in an old bernie article that billyd will be making player decisions next year and only has to answer to chip. i like it. but as gordo has mentioned, they also seek a strong president type to run the show. isnt there going to be some conflict there if they get say ,a ron wolf type? or are they looking more for a figure head type?thanks.
Jim Thomas: It would be Billy D working in concert with the new head coach. I think one line of thinking is that a president would just add another level of bureaucracy.

B-Ball Fan: Can we please just play the people who truly show some effort and pride during last 2 games. Oops, we wouldn't be able to put 11 players out there would we ? Who is the # 2 draft pick going to be for the rams because i have faith in the Rams not winning another game and think the Chiefs and seahawks will win 1 more time.
Jim Thomas: At the risk of repeating myself, if I had to put some money down on it right now _ I would say best offensive tackle avaiable. (Obviously, what happens in free agency, which will take up almost two months before the draft, could have an impact on that.)

Cory- Parker Colorado: JT,

Do you think there will be any interest by the Rams in trading for Eagles CB Lito Sheppard? The Rams missed the boat on Kris Jenkins (spent the 2nd round pick on Brian Leonard, sheesh) in two straight offseasons and I would hate to see the Rams do the same with Sheppard. If theycould resign Bartell, resign Atogwe, and trade for Sheppard, and draft a SS by the 3rd round (deep draft for safeties this year) the Rams could have a much improved defensive backfield in 2009 (with Hill, Brown, Wade, King, and Craft for depth at CB). I am totally a pass rush makes the DB's look good or bad person. But the Rams do need to upgrade the DB's regardless of who is up front.
Jim Thomas: While we're on the topic of DBs, the Rams officially placed Tye Hill on the injured reserve list this season. Another symbol of things gone wrong here at Rams Park _ a former first-round draft pick who for the second year in a row, fails to play in more than half his team's games. The Rams claimed CB Quincy Butler off waivers from Dallas, and he will take Hill's roster spot for the final three games. Butler was also signed to a 2009 contract, so this is as much a move toward next season as this.
As for Lito Sheppard, I think that's worth keeping in mind as we get closer to the trading period in March.

Gabriel 2 Snow: I thought Todd Johnson did a fine job in limited duty. Is he capable of covering well enough to be a starter? Also, what happened to the plan to play Chamberlain? The kid can run, I was looking forward to seeing him at LB.
Jim Thomas: Todd Johnson did pretty well. He doesn't have great range or speed, but he's definitely an upgrade in that area over Chavous. Good question on Chamberlain. I'll try to ask Haslett later this week.

Cory- Parker Colorado: JT,

What kind of trade value does Alex Barron have? I just think it is best for both sides if he is dealt this offseason.
Jim Thomas: Maybe _ maybe _ a mid-round pick.

STL FAN: Hey Jim,

In the last post game chat with Gordo I asked him this.

I know this is a hard question, but in your heart of hearts, do you believe Chip will be able to keep the Rams in St.Louis? I know he is committed to, but really who will buy them? Who in the are can afford them, and who would want to. I don't see us making it to the Superbowl before 2015, or even doing good enough in order for people wanting to fork out money for a new stadium.

His response was: Rush Limbaugh could put together an ownership group committed to Missouri. I ran this by Kit Bond, who is pals with Rush, and he thought it could happen. But there may be other bidders eager to move the team elsewhere.
It's all about the ownership -- and St. Louis doesn't have so many rich guys these days.

I Thought that was pretty interesting considering Rush just came across some pretty good money. Whats your take, you think we'll have football in St.Louis past 2015 or after the contract runs out?

P.S. Man these dolphins can really give a fan of a 2-11 team hope for the next year!! There on pace to be the most improved team ever!! (even though this was via Parcells, and them catching one of the most sought after coaches that season) We can always dream.

Thanks Jim
Jim Thomas: You're asking me to look seven years into the future, and that's a hard thing to do. I don't really know what to tell you. But until this economy improves the point is moot. The league doesn't really like consortiums as owners. They like one or two people. That makes it tougher, because as you know, these things cost a little bit of money.

bfulton: The Rams have had former starting Buccaneer OT Anthony Davis on the roster for almost a month, now. Any word on if he's keeper or not, yet?
Jim Thomas: You know there was one practice where he got a lot of word with the starters when Pace was first battling that knee problem. In three weeks with the team, he has yet to be on the game-day roster. But I do think the Rams like him enough to consider bringing him back to camp as a potential backup at the right price.

Steve B.: Jim:
You wrote this weekend that the Rams want to re-sign Bartell and Atogwe, and that while Bartell is enthusiastic about returning, Atogwe was noncommital. Do you think O.J. wants out? (Who could blame him?)

Do you think the Rams might tag him, at least with a transition designation? Safetys aren't prohibitively expensive, and the guy is a turnover manufacturing machine, and the Rams can't afford to lose one of the few guys they have who can make plays, IMO.
Jim Thomas: Not sure on Atogwe. His "noncommital" approach could've been just a desire not to talk about the subject. He's a little different that way. But I think you make a good point on Atogwe. A transition tag would at least give the Rams the right to match. With such few playmakers to begin with, letting Atogwe walk doesn't make much sense. And he's truly a guy that works hard to get better.

Steve B.: Jim:
The Rams receivers don't seem to get open much, compared to other teams. I live in the Bay Area, and the 49 receivers are running free all the time. (No, I don't want Martz back as head coach!!)
Do you agree, and if so, why?
Rookie receivers?
Veterans (Holt, Looker) too slow?
Poor play design?
Lack of a TE? Lack of effort?

I've heard Bulger being blamed for not throwing the ball on time, but I doubt it has all that much to do with the QB. Bulger has been pretty dreadful at times, but it's not like he is missing a lot of guys who are five yards in the clear.
Jim Thomas: Well, in watch game film, it seems like _ in general _ receivers from other teams are consistently a lot more open than Rams receivers. (Of course, maybe that's a reflection on the quality of Rams defensive backs, as well.) There are no easy answers to this. It's probably a hodgepodge of all the factors you imply above _ except for lack of effort. That isn't at play here.

Franklin: Oh Jim,

Let's say the Rams held a decathlon. (Probably more fun to watch than most games, these days.) Which Rams would be considered the best athletes at their positions? My guesses are: 'Spoon at linebacker, Barron on the OL, Long on the DL, Fells at TE. I am off? And how about the wideouts, d-backs and special teams units?

Musing on something other than losses, I am.

It's me,
Franklin!
Jim Thomas: I still think I'd go with Little on the d-line.
Maybe Barell for his size and speed in the secondary.
Wideouts is a tough call. Avery has the speed. Holt has great hands. Burton's knee is bothering him. On special teams, Stills doesn't really run all that well, but he gets the job done time after time. Or it could be Looker, who throws a pretty good pass and probably is the best golfer on the team.

NYC Rams Fan: Hi Jim,

Not to much to say or asked that hasn't already been said or asked. Another inconsistent performance, and though the Rams were supposedly able to move the ball, many unfinished drives, missed points, and turnovers.

First, Bulger was only sacked once according to the stats. How was the pass protection otherwise (i.e. pressure, frequent hits, etc.)?

Second, pass route mistakes by the rookie wide receivers. Is is normal to be making these mistakes this late in the season, or are they past due to correct them?

Last, if Haslett doesn't return, any ideas who the Rams might consider as his replacement, or is it too early to think about?
Jim Thomas: Pass protection wasn't bad, although the Cardinals have struggled to get to the passer lately.
As I mentioned earlier, it's surprising to see some of these route-running mistakes this late in the season. Rookie or not.
As for potential coaches, I could throw out the expected names, but I'm not sure if any or legit. For what it's worth, I'll throw this one out, the Falcons did interview Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz when Devaney was there.

rams26: Hello Jim -

I realize both a President and GM (probably BD) need to be in place first. However. have you heard any rumblings on possible head coaches for next year? Are they thinking about Rex Ryan or Steve Spagnola? Thank you for helping us through these dark days!!!!

As always............GO RAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim Thomas: Haven't heard any rumblings, but as I mentioned before I don't think the Rams have a chance at Spagnuolo.

Kid KU: Hi Jim, I'm tired of ranting, griping, and moaning so I just want to ask
a "hot read" question. Avery keeps getting blamed for missing a hot read.
Is it that Bulger and Avery are to pick up quickly that a DB is coming and Avery must break off his original route and look for the quick slant? Help me here or is that pretty much it?

Thanks for these forums. kevin
Jim Thomas: That's basically it.

Frank: Writing from Vancouver WA. I dont have a feel for your team. Based on what I'm seeing, the Hawks and Rams are equally horrible. What, in your opinion, will the Rams need to do to win this Sunday in the Toilet Bowl game of the year?
Jim Thomas: 1.) Reduce or eliminate turnovers.
2.) Get off to a good start.
3.) Get Jackson involved early and often, including in the passing game.

RamTough99: Hi Jim,
How have the rookies & young players been handling the lopsided defeats? We know some of the veterans won't be back. Do the rookies know that in a few years some of them will be the team leaders?
Thanks,
Ken
Jim Thomas: Good question on the youngsters. They all still seem to be into it. As for being leaders of the future, I don't think they see the big picture at this point.

Tom in Florida: I see Aeneas Williams was inducted into the Cards' Ring of Honor. When does he become HOF eligible and what do you think his chances are? He really just kind of disappeared into the ether when he left and I don't even remember an official retirement, but he was a helluva player.
Jim Thomas: I don't think Aeneas ever officially retired. He still lives in the St. Louis area. Aeneas' last game was in 2004. There's a five-year waiting period, so he would be eligible after next season. In my mind, he's a Hall of Famer. Seven Pro Bowls. Lots of interceptions. Lots of returns for TDs, and he did play on a Super Bowl team in 2001.

signed s. j.: Jim, there was not much said about the benching of Barron.I'm not sure that was the right thing to do?He had a nice streak going that might help
his trade value.Goldberg is a left side guy,not right. So it shows the lack of depth the offensive line has.The effect of the decision was a sack & short series for the offense.Barron was right back in & Goldberg never got
a chance to really work on the right side all year.

What's your take on Haslett's decision with Alex. Was it worth it in your eyes ? What is Barrons future with the Rams ?
Jim Thomas: Sure it was worth it. And this wasn't just some token benching. Barron sat for nearly three-quarters of the game. You have to hold the players accountable. A guy just can't show up 20 minutes late for a 10:30 a.m. meeting (not a 7 a.m. meeting, a 10:30 a.m. meeting!!!!) and expect no punishment.
As for Barron's future with the team, suffice it to say he's on thin ice.

Memphis Ram: Few questions:
1) Is the entire coaching staff signed through the 2009 season or are their some contracts about to expire at the end of this season?

2) Rumor has it that Haslett wanted to switch to a 3-4 defense, but was denied by either Linehan or upper management. When did this occur? Upon his hire? This offseason? When??

3) Anybody at RamsPark paying any attention to the job Mike Singletary is doing in San Francisco? How does this affect Haslett's job security?

Thanks for your time, Mr. Thomas.
Jim Thomas: 1.) I think almost all of them (but not Haslett) are signed through 2009.
2.) I have not heard that rumor.
3.) I don't think Singletary's relative success is helping Haslett's cause.

Petey123: Jim, any truth to Chip selling a portion of the Rams but still be majority owner?
Jim Thomas: Well, that could happen. But Kroenke already owns 40 percent. So there's not much for Chip to sell and still be majority owner (about 9 percent, I guess).

saguaro larry: Hi Jim,
Could you tell me how much influence Haslett had in personnel regarding his defense prior to this year under Linehan ?
Jim Thomas: Less influence than I originally thought. A few examples---Haslett didn't really know about the Rams interest in Jon Alston until draft day; Haslett wanted to keep Chillar; Haslett liked Ryan Pickett a lot.

Ruben: Jim, thanks for taking my question. Other than a miracle 3 game win streak to close out the year, Mr. Rosenbloom would have to find a new head coach other than Haslett. Do you think the reason Chip fudged on his initial 6 wins and the job is yours, to 4 games, is due to the pending sale of the Rams sooner than later? A search for top coach, Cowher, Marty, ect. would have to be seen as long term choices and does he have money to invest in them if he sells in 2009? Otherwise, it seems like he is accepting bad football, by trying to justify why Haslett is the right man for the job.
Jim Thomas: No, I think it's a case of Chip realizing the more he watches the team how limited the talent is in some areas.

bjf: I've tried asking this before, but was never answered in this forum. In the past it's been reported that Chip Rosenbloom only attended one or two owners meetings with his mother over the years.

Does he know the right people in the football world to hire qualified front office people to get this team headed in the right direction? After last years draft what is Bill Devaney's status with the club? I'd like to see him stay.

At this point after the front office is reworked (the sooner the better) I cant see the current coaching staff staying in place, but you cant be the last to make these changes and expect to get an great coaching staff in place if your best coaches are already employed somewhere else.

Can Chip get all this done right in a expediant timeframe?
Jim Thomas: The learning curve has been steep for Chip, but he's also proving himself to be a quick study. Nothing official, but it looks like Billy Devaney will have a lot of say in any coaching job search.

RepubloCrat: Jim,

In this day and age, the Rams are looking more like the traditional Phoenix Cardinals of old...

Is there a possibility the Lambs could be posturing for a draft pick of Tim Tebow, or another high QB?
Jim Thomas: Believe me, I don't think there's any posturing involved. They are truly this bad.

mike: why not draft a qb? let him sit a year then get rid of bulger. while this year ax green keep berlin and the rookie behind bulger
Jim Thomas: It's looking more and more like that's the plan _ to draft a QB.

Preston Martin: Hi Jim,
I thought holt stepped up his efforts against arizona but I think the real reason his numbers are down this year besides the obvious, is because of his knee operation this last off-season, I bet he is back to his old ways next season when he has time to heal up a little more.
Jim Thomas: The knee hasn't been as much of an issue this year as last. In the right offense, I still think he's an 1,100-yard receiver.

Encino: What's the NFL record for least touchdowns scored by a team in one season?
Jim Thomas: Three-by Cincinnati in 1933.

ncdc: Dear Jim,

Here is a quote from Bill Coats' Around the Horns blog:

"*Todd Johnson had five tackles in limited time at SS, plus a quarterback pressure. Chavous, the starter, was credited with one tackle."

So, where is Haslett and Venturi on this?
Jim Thomas: Obviously, they realize there are some issues with Chavous. Which explains why Johnson is playing here down the stretch.

West Coast Ram: Jim,
Nice to see the Ram's use the Wildcat formation after seeing it successfully run by other teams for 12 weeks. Quick studies! My question, do you think that a player like Darby or Avery would be better to run this formation?
Jim Thomas: I don't know, but I'd like to see them tried back there as well.

chattylicker: Do the rams keep haslett for next year? Also we need to address the o-line they seem weak or not know whats going on do you think we upgrade that aspect of the team and do they get rid of mr glass drew bennett!
Jim Thomas: I think the cap hit ($5 million) makes it tough to cut Bennett this year. If that turns out to be the case, they bring him back, I don't think they can count on him in their plans to have a significant role. Maybe he's their No. 4 or No. 5. But have guys in place to be ahead of him. Then, if Bennett surprises them, and plays better than expected, so be it.

chattylicker: With chavous missing tackle after tackle and always either getting beat deep or outta position will he be gone and also do we go after someone like lito sheppard our secondary is very thin
Jim Thomas: I do not expect Chavous back in '09

Bob: Jim,

With so many holes on the defensive side and the offensive line playing better in the last couple of games do you think the Rams will look at defensive help like Rey Maluaga of USC and sign a run stuffing DT via free agency?
Jim Thomas: The pass blocking may have been better, but the run blocking was almost non-existant against Arizona. Rebuilding the offensive line remains the top priority.

Rod: I hear Tye Hill is on the IR. Do you know anything about the cornerback we picked up? Is it a veteran or someone that could have some potential next year?
Jim Thomas: I'll have something on Quincy Butler in tomorrow's P-D.

james arnold: Jim:

I have watched as much football as anyone my age and I cannot recollect ever seeing such an awful team at this level. In 40+ years, never. I am convinced that there cannot be such a drop off of talent between the rams and the rest of nfl, so i would like your theories as to the level of poor performance. If it is not talent, then it has to be coaching schemes and/or lack of heart. In addition, can you as a beat writer start asking tough questions to the players and organization with regards to this debacle?
Jim Thomas: I've been covering either NFL or college football since 1985. That's almost a quarter of a century. I really believe it's the worst team I've covered, and that's saying a lot considering I covered the Woody Widenhofer Missouri Tigers.
I would say there are a lot of factors involved in the current debacle, most of them have been written about in some detail. It begins with personnel decisions. Bad drafts, bad free-agent decisions.
As for "tough questions" I believe I've been asking them for 14 seasons on the beat. If your idea of asking a tough question is yelling at someone, or insulting them, well, that's not a tough question _ that's unprofessional.

Tony: What is your read, or at least your gut instinct, on how (and how quickly) Chip will deal with the front office and coaching situations once the season ends? I fear that the team being for sale greatly increases the possibility that he does little more than replace Haslett with another caretaker coach, leaving the big changes to new ownership. And the end result for the fans could, rather unbelievably, be another season that looks an awful lot like this one in terms of the team's decision-making structure.
Jim Thomas: He's already working on it. But as anxious as everyone is to see what he does, it's not all going to be in piece, say, three days after the season's over. If there's any kind of full-fledge job search for a new head coach, it will take several weeks.

joeswimmer: JT,

Darby has demonstrated a real good ability to block and catch passes out of the backfield. Given his ability to block could he be utilized, ala Robert Holcomb, as an undersized blocking back who also gives you the added dimension as a good receiver.
Jim Thomas: Darby lacks the size to be even an undersized blocking back. I think his best chance of making the team is as a third-down back (because of his quickness and pass-catching ability). And if you're on the field in passing situations, you better be able to pick up a blitz, which is where Darby's blocking skills come in handy.

rambart: Hi Jim, once again Thanks for your article.. We hear over & over again how light we are, DE, DT, and especially line backers. why not more talk about Maualuga. He sure seems big enough. Does he have some problem???
Thanks Jerry Bartels Elk Grove CA
Jim Thomas: I'm sure he's in the mix. It's still very early in the process for the Rams. The only question mark on him that I'm aware of is his running ability. Is he fast enough to be an every down linebacker? And if you're taking a middle linebacker that high in the draft, he's got to be an every down linebacker.

beast39: If the Rams really improve the o-line for next year which I think they will, do you think Steven Jackson will have really impresive numbers and carry the Rams next year?
Jim Thomas: That, in a nutshell, is the plan. (But with a strong backup running back.)

LongTimeRamFan: Before you say NO, just hear me out... The Rams Defense stinks, and doesn't show any signs of getting better any time soon. Therefore, why not just rebuild but build TOWARDS a 3-4 defense? The 3-4 is much more versatile and unpredictable. Again, before you say the Rams are built for a 4-3, how many of the players would YOU keep if the salary cap wasn't an issue? 5? 6? not very many I'm sure. My short list would be Long, Carriker, Ryan, Spoon, O.J., and maybe Bartell.

We already have a few people that could fit into the 3-4 scheme so it's not like we would need an entirely new D.... and there may be a few interesting converts like maybe Long or a trimmed down Carriker standing up and playing LB...
Jim Thomas: No.
(Just kidding.)
It would take a major makeover. The Rams would need lots of linebackers. And Carriker would have to do a lot of trimming since he weighs about 315 these days.
