The Cardinals beat writer goes one-on-one with readers at 1 p.m. Tuesday in a live chat.

Joe Strauss: Ok, I've typed several introductions to the Chat and none have stuck yet. One of those days in Cyber-Purgatory, I guess. Well, let's climb aboard a rare Tuesday edition of JSL!!!, kind of a neap tide version. It looks like the ChatHeads are suitably riled, so let's go.
Jeremy: Why is Joe Mather still at AAA when he is hitting under .150? We have Daryl Jones in AA hitting over .300. We have been very agressive with Player development, what is the hold up in this situation? Also, what is the reasoning in optioning Tyler Greene, instead of Joe Thurston? Last Question, Mark Derosa???
Joe Strauss: Mather dealt with wrist discomfort earlier this spring that stemmed from last September's surgery. He is a RH power bat, something this club desparately needs and is apparently seeking to acquire through trade. Mather is 26 and at one point projected as the Opening Day third baseman. It would be hasty to trash him. Daryl Jones is 21 and considered one of the system's so-called Untouchables. The club believes him one of its few potential impact offensive players. At 21, Jones could do worse than spend at least a half season at Double-A. Tyler Greene was optioned while the Cardinals give Khalil Greene greater exposure over the next week or two. Greene is not considered an option at third base for now. GM John Mozeliak and ownership have thrown water on any potential for a DeRosa trade. Salary ($5.5M) is an obstacle. Garrett Atkins is a "low-hanging" type who has done little this season for the Colorado Rockies. There may be something there. He is due $7M this season but the Rockies may eat a portion for the right players in return. He is a potential power guy. Stay tuned.
Tackleberry: JSL,
Everyone in Cardinal Nation knows we need a legit everyday 3rd basemen to compete in the division. Those being honest with themselves accept that it is highly unlikely to be Troy Glaus. The last two seasons ownership has failed to answer the bell at the trade deadline, with equally competitive teams with equally glaring needs, so why should we believe that DeWitt & Co. will deliver this summer? If they strand this team again this year do you see LaRussa and some portion of fans walking away in 2010?
Joe Strauss: It's a question many are asking. One thing is certain: If La Russa walks as protest to a lack of aggressiveness by ownership, a portion of the fan base will follow. La Russa and Pujols are the faces of the franchise. As long as TLR is in the house -- like him or not -- he brings significant credibility. If he walks, it suggests forces are in play that may also compromise the franchise's ability to retain Pujols. Any answer is speculative, but the question is very legitimate.
John W.: Joe,
We're quickly coming up on the 2009 Baseball Draft, and I wondered if I could get your thoughts on the Cardinals preferences. While their choice will likely depend on who is left, what position do you see the Birds looking to fill with their first-round choice?
Also, a related question. Is there any possibility that Aaron Crow might still be available by the 19th pick? My gut says "no", but he would be a nice pick-up for the team, don't you think?
Joe Strauss: Most scouting analysts project the Cardinals taking a college hitter. Baseball is not like football in the sense that "drafting for need" is overrated in baseball. You take the player who projects best at whatever position. Pitching often receives benefit of the doubt, though the Cardinals have become skittish regarding HS arms. I seriously doubt Crow will be available for the Cardinals. If so, they would be hard-pressed to pass.
John W.: Joe,
Third Base looks like it might be a year-long challenge. Which do you see as the most likely front-office decision?
a) Trade for Mark DeRosa from Cleveland
b) Add Brett Wallace to the 40-man roster before the end of the year
c) FO sticks with the horses its got, hopes for the best
Joe Strauss: I might go with D) None of the above. It is more likely there will be a trade for a RH hitter other than DeRosa.
