Postgame With Gordo
Join columnist Jeff Gordon for a live Rams chat, approximately 30 minutes after the end of each Rams game this season.
Sunday, September 14, 2008 03:30 PM CDT
ramsfan80: Where is Ricky Manning? Clearly Tye Hill cannot play in this league. Any yardage by the Giants seems to have come at the expense of Hill. Team looks inspired but lack of talent on O-Line and secondary is VERY apparent.
Jeff Gordon: Manning apparently lacks the foot speed to play on the outside any more. In time, he could play the nickel spot. Clearly this team just has to get Hill up to speed -- or else.

This was not a good day for the kid.

Janie Smith: How long before the owners move the team to LA or sell it? Will anyone in St. Louis still care by the time this happens?
Jeff Gordon: There was not a huge crowd at the Dome for this one. Lots of empty seats, no doubt due to the adverse weather and flooding. But scalpers were trying to move tickets for just $5 before game time. Not a good sign.

This team will be here awhile, but the next ownership group will have lots of work to do.

Craig: I wonder if anyone would still condone handing the team to Jim Haslett. This guy is pathetic. But then again, so is the rest of the team. I guess I really don't have a question for you. This team looks about as good as my high school football team, not very; I don't know if I have it in me to watch another game. Very, very disappointing.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that.

Christopher Johnson: Upside: the Rams did actually score a touchdown and showed flashes on defense here and there. But let's get down to it, Gordo. This game was another disgrace. How long before Linehan gets capped?
Jeff Gordon: As Bernie and Bryan were saying up in the press box, Saunders and Haslett haven't distinguished themselves either. So if Scott goes, will much change?

Geoff N, Champaign IL: Please answer this question. I can't watch the game because I am in Illinois, but I am listening to the sirius (NYG broadcast) and it sounded... real bad. I just want to know did the players atleast have more emotion and seem more organized this game than last week? Do they look like most have quit on Linehan?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams competed pretty well for 3-plus quarters. The game got ugly at the end, but the Rams fought for most of the way. Sadly, they just aren't very good. And the Giants played like champions. They knew where the mismatches were and they went after them.

LaughingLion: Jeff:

I'm personally pleased with the result of this game. Close games would simply have provided more excuses for Scott Linehan. Nice guy or not, he simply isn't up to the task of coaching an NFL team. The more embarrassments we have, the faster the axe will have to fall. However having watched these two games, I believe the Rams' talent is also overrated. They're badly coached, but they really can't play, either.
Jeff Gordon: Again, can't argue with that. They got manhandled. I don't know if the talent has been overrated at any point, but clearly these guys aren't very good.

Kyle Ebert: Hi Gordo,
The Rams showed no Desire or Ability today again NY. I live in NJ and I will have to hear about this game all week. The Rams should just give up now, after these two game... What do you think? Should they cont or just forfeit the rest of the season and give the ticket holders back their money.
Jeff Gordon: There are wins left on this schedule, believe it or not. But can the pull themselves together and beat a few of those fellow bad teams later in the year?

The Giants are very good. No shame in losing to them -- although the end was awfully hard to take.

Tim Smith: Well - we did score a touchdown. YEAH!!

But, Marc is going to need some serious pain relievers tonight.
Jeff Gordon: Bulger got pounded again. And he was already looking like a victim of Battered Quarterback Syndrome.

DBQIA: Who do the Rams need to get rid of to change the attitude of the team? Are there a few players that are poisoning the atmosphere?

Did Burton play today? Did Dante Hall show anything as either a receiver or as a returner?
Jeff Gordon: Burton played, but could have had a bigger role. Hall did nothing at all. I don't know that players are poisoning the atmosphere. Losing 15 of 18 will jade almost anybody. The veterans know this team is doomed.

steven: instead of getting blown out the first half, we get blown out the 2nd half. How long do you give linehan and hazelnut?
Jeff Gordon: This is a tough, tough situations. 15 losses in 18 games is brutal. Hard for any coaching staff to battle through that. Where is the hope?

Curt: When will in be time to call for someone to finally see that this coaching staff can't handle these players?
Jeff Gordon: If makes anybody feel better, Linehan has never been more outwardly ticked off in St. Louis. He was practically foaming at the mouth during his post-game address. "It's lousy," he said. "The buck stops here" he added at another point.

But he had no real explanation for what went wrong during the last 8 or 9 minutes.

mtramfan: Gordo - What next for this franchise? They have obviously hit rock bottom.
Jeff Gordon: Matt Cassel passing for 400 yards against this "D"? It can actually get worse.

pete: dude im so frustrated right now, what can i personally do to get scottie and haz out of here as soon as possible. im tired of watching and cheering for this sorry excuse for a team i could have worked today and got my overtime pay but instead i have to watch this crap that scottie and haz and even al put on the field . please help
Jeff Gordon: I am not in a position of authority. Sorry.

ted: Just made you the owner....what's the first step to fixing this mess?
Jeff Gordon: Strong football guy as president -- ala Parcells -- and let the chips fall. I'd go for a guy like Schottenheimer at the top and see what he wants to do.

BlaBlaBla: Are Chavous and Hill trying to throw games? Hill loses his jock strap everytime a WR puts ANY move on him. Chavous couldn't run down a 260 pound running back from behind, takes bad angles, and tackles like a girl scout.
Jeff Gordon: Let's not get the Girl Scouts out there mad at us.

ramsfan: So we're back to the "same old Rams"! It was clear from the start that this team had some life as they held their own in the first half. When the team obviously GAVE UP late in the second half it was clear they were sending a message. Haslett's porous D HAS TO GO! Linehan doesn't deserve another week to turn this around. Bulger I'm afraid will NEVER be the same. When will the coaching changes/quarterback changes take place?
Jeff Gordon: It only gets tougher going forward. I don't what changes would make a big difference, since this team needs an overhaul. But at least superficial change is needed after the way this game ended. Some sort of message must be sent.

gary98z: Any chance we can go 0-16 or at least have the worst record in the league?
I couldn't see the game because I'm in KC. At least the Chiefs looked (I'm guessing) worse than the Rams. At least they have an excuse due to rebuilding and starting a bunch of rookies. Heck they played 3 differenct qb's in that game!
Jeff Gordon: Can't speak to the Chiefs, but the Rams looked OK until the very end. They didn't look good enough to win, but they looked OK.

joe passamonte: at least there is one upside to my divorce, selling of my home and not having the NFL ticket....i dont need or have to watch this team....wow....blow up the entire orginazation...i dont know who should coach them.
Jeff Gordon: At this point, there is so much work to do. I just don't see how the current staff can pull this team out of its downward spiral. They aren't just 0-2, they are 3-15 since the start of last season.

Dave: Its still early in the season, but Randy McMichael had 2 catches for 24 yards! How many times did Bulger throw him the ball and he not catch it? Come on!
Jeff Gordon: McMichael lost one catch to a penalty and dropped a potential big gainer late. But the Giants took him away, for the most part.

UpstateRamFan: Let Jim Hanifan coach the rest of the season.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know if these guys could cope with all the profanity they would hear.

Jack: So how much longer do we go with the head coach before we fire him. Or do we fire the defensive coordinator? We can not afford to go 0-3 next week.
Jeff Gordon: No, but don't bet against 0-3.

joe passamonte: players we need to lose: dante hall and tye hill
Jeff Gordon: Hill is too young to discard. Hall, on the other hand . . .

Rampage88: So what exactly does the word competitive mean to Chip? Tye Hill is absolutely horrible! He gets picked on all the time because every team knows he can’t cover. Al Saunders offense looks a lot like the offense we ran last year. We went deep one time and got a lucky touchdown. When will we fire Linehan and Haslett? This is just ridiculous..
Jeff Gordon: It appears that Chip might have been a tad optimistic about this season. This team doesn't have the talent he thought it had.

NJKyle: Will Torry Holt be around next year? Or do you think that He will want to move on?
Jeff Gordon: Baring major change, he will want to move to a contender. Why wouldn't he?

wiramfan1: Hey Gordo
Well, it's the same thing just another week.. Linehan and Haslett have no clue!
This coaching staff needs to be blown up....

This is not a new Coach installing a new offense or defense.. This is the 3rd season of this crap!

You know a I said this 3 years ago when Linehan was hired, "here is a man who is not a Ram and will put this on his resume and coach after being fired and not care once he leaves."
Well I am a Ram fan...Have been for over 40 years!!! As much as I would like to not care i can't and that what makes watching these pass thru coaches ruin my team! I don't wish them the well, I hope they are run out of town on rail!! Not a dollar not red cent will I spend on the Rams as long as the coaches stay on the sidelines!!! Please Gordo do whatever is needed to get theses bums run out so I can go in supporting a team I have for 40+ years..
Jeff Gordon: If Rams management took this weekly chat to heart, a change would be made. We can only do so much here in cyberspace.

ethan: When does the point come when someone must lose their job over the performance of this team. Not just today or last week, but going back to last year?

Who has lost their job from this team? Linehan's offensive co-ordinator from last year is about the only one I can think of.

What player has lost their job? What starter, on either side of the ball? Has Barron, Bulger, T. Hill, Chaveous?Incognito? Even Jackson?

Nobody should be immune.

Has Linehan lost his job? Haslett?

When are people held accountable? And why should anyone be exempt. Bulger, Jackson, Incognito, Pace, Tinoisamoa, Carriker, I don't care who it is.

Could the result be worse? It is just time to take a look in the mirror at all the players and all the coaches and make some changes. Those that are quitters need to be benched, those that are playing badly and missing plays need to be benched and those running the team that have no answers need to be removed.

Look at the Cardinals. Wisenhunt is starting Warner over their million dollar kid Leinart who is already in his third year, because he feels Warner gives him the best chance to win. I don't think the Rams coaches would have enough leadership ability, enough authority, to pull that off.

What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: I have to believe Saunders and Haslett have the wherewithal to make change. But who do they put in? I'm not sure Trent Green could make a big difference, although we will see him soon enough if Bulger keeps getting hit.

mteel7237: Do you think Carriker's surgerys this off season are having an effect on his play so far. The whole defense stinks but I was hoping for a bump from Adam in his second year.
Jeff Gordon: Don't know what the deal is there, but the Rams do need more from him.

Bulger2Holt4td: Another disappointing performance by the rams. I don't think firing one coach is gonna help bring this team out of the dump either. At least we have the Mizzou Tigers to follow this year.
Jeff Gordon: Boy, what a difference between the two programs, eh? The Tigers couldn't be any more impressive. And the Rams, YIKES!

bjf: Does anyone have Vermeils' phone number? Get this team, to at least respectablity, before a new fulltime coach can be hired.
Jeff Gordon: I'm sure he has call waiting. Why would he pick up the phone at this point?

wiramfan1: Why can't Haslett see he needs to move the linebackers up 4-5 yards to show some pressure? Even the blitz's are late!!!
Jeff Gordon: Mere positioning won't change things. The offense would react to that. The bigger issue is ability. That is one of the least effective linebacker corps in the NFL.

Ellison33: I just can't understand why guys who are lucky enough to pull on that uniform can not show more pride, determination, and fight on that field. Most of these players don't deserve to wear that helmet! Where is somebody like Youngblood who would gladly leave a leg on the field fighting for the cause??? Gone are the days indeed. Absolutely sickening to watch!!!
Jeff Gordon: They battled OK for most of the game. But the cave-in at the end was discouraging to say the least. How does the team come back from that?

RichS: Please tell me there are additional tests to run for the shell shocked battered QB?
Jeff Gordon: I didn't like the way he got the ball out today. Not much zip. I like him OK when there is some tempo in the offense, but when it goes south on him, it really goes South.

B from Denver: From here(the Rockies), it looks like the coaches have lost the team. Why wait till the end of the year to replace them? The players will not play any harder for lame ducks.
Jeff Gordon: Fair point. This staff lost a lot of ground in two weeks. Something big has to happen soon.

Ocho Gringo: I don't even know what to ask.

When is the lease up again?
Jeff Gordon: It shouldn't get too crazy here for another three or four years. The new owner will want a new stadium and we'll see what happens with that.

pete: so with our first pick next year do you think we go OLINE or DB
Jeff Gordon: OT -- the Rams have to get a powerful tackle.

steven: what is linehan saying in his press conference? hopefully handing in his resignation
Jeff Gordon: He went nuts, ripped the team pretty good, took just one question and then left the area. He was most displeased.

Phillip: Why did management cut Brandon Williams over Dante Hall? C'mon we all new that this was a rebuilding year and we only gave up a 6th rounder for the guy. Plus on top of that he wasn't too productive as a WR in KC. What's the business?
Jeff Gordon: Williams didn't do much ss a receiver or returner. I would have kept Stanley on the active roster instead.

rilke: did I really just witness a 2 and 28 shovel pass?
Jeff Gordon: Which is why we can't be too quick to name Saunders as the preferred interim coaching candidate.

brownstar: Well Gordo I believe we are seeing a deflated team, is it time for the Rams brass to call Bill Cowher?
Jeff Gordon: They can all the time, but Bill is more likely to take a call from telemarketers.

Mark in NY: Jeff, I'm not a football guy, but this team needs to be blown up. I don't care where they start, but I would try replacing anyone who has not made a play recently. Insert in their place any youngster or back-up who has any talent whatsoever. I would start Burton and Avery, Trent Green, any linebackers, Greco, and possibly Pittman.

Kudos to the Big O today (when I saw him he looked great), Holt, Long, both kickers, Bulger (for the scramble), McMichael, and Looker. Am I forgetting anyone?

PS - I want to know who the Rams took aheah of Justin Tuck in '05, and do you know where he was rated on the Rams board?
Jeff Gordon: Tuck went 74th that year. The Rams picked Atogwe with their pick ahead of him.

John: The entire team looked very, very bad; but special mention must go to the O-Line--one of the worst performances I have ever seen. Also, I think Jackson is proving he is not worth the money, however, I think he was smart to demand it because it was probably his last chance to get it.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson rushed for 4.1 yards per carry behind an overmatched offensive line and caught seven passes. I can live with that. The man needs some help.

Gary Staat: Well Gordo, What would you do. I love St.Louis football and never want to loose our team. But something has to be done now to bring fans sunday to the onnce great state it once was. I mean now,Make Al Sunders your head coach go out and get you a great defence coach. Al or Mark Bulger can't help having a lousy offensive line and o-line coach. Were still terrible at special team except we have to great kickers. Hasslet has to go and so does Linnehan and I mean now to show the fans they care about us the fans. They are not playing for Linehan or any of the others Headcoach at there postion. The 2 weeks show it needs to be done now. Haslett hasn't shown none of the talent he had with pitsburgh, he's terrible. You think that to much to soon I totally disagree. Rams need to bite the bullett eat some cash and do something now. Why did we give Jackson a raise and Bulger if we weren't going to protect and move the ball.
Jeff Gordon: I love Al, but he, too, has to show more before he gets more responsibility. The Rams converted 3 of 13 third-down plays in this game, something Linehan railed about after the game.

John: Gordo-

Who would you single out as the worst of the game?
Jeff Gordon: Hate to keep picking on Tye Hill, but it's easy to spot trouble out on that island.

bjf: Vermeil may have a desire to "right the ship" one more time. Knowing it would only be for this season. He already has one coordinator in place.
Jeff Gordon: That's asking a lot. He seems to be enjoying retirement and he's not getting any younger.

LaRamz: OH MY FREAKING GOSH....Poor talent and bad coaching is a recipe served best by John and Jay. Whenever it was Third and long, find Ty Hill and your GRANTED a first down. The defensive play calling was HORRIBLE, The offensive playing call was stupid and some of these worthless starters should be benched or shown the door. I am quit sure there Free agents that are better than Corey Chavous. I am a true Rams fan win or lose and always will be, but this is insane !!!!! I AM SO FRUSTRATED
Jeff Gordon: You would be surprised, but the guys on the street aren't better, for the most part. Wholesale change of attitude is needed, not wholesale change of talent wouldn't help in midseason.

Ramtastic!: If a new HC and DC step in and motivate the players, how much better would they actaully be? In other words, how far under their actual potential are they playing? Is there a chance the Rams players may be as lousy as the way they are coached? You can put jet fuel into a Ford Pinto, but it is by no means a race car.
Jeff Gordon: I owned a Dodge Omni for many years. It was like running this offense.

Columbia_Man: Joe and Troy talked compared KC to STL saying in KC they can go young and lose without fear of the HD losing his job while that cannot be done in STL. I do see a lack of playing the younger player but is there young talent on this team that makes any difference?
Jeff Gordon: Excellent question. I'd play Burton more, but other than that . . .

Mr. Dick: My condolences, Gordo. I have a feeling you aren't looking forward to the next 14 weeks. But then again, neither are we. Oh well....
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, well, a job is a job. But hockey season will be here soon enough!

BakoCAramFan: Well, last week I wondered when they would get their first touchdown and their first third down conversion...

They managed, what, one of each?

Now what I want is one quarter when we outscore the other team...

When do you think that will happen?
Jeff Gordon: Some change appears to be in order, but it is the hands of Chip Rosenbloom. A more experienced owner probably drops a hammer on somebody after that finish.

rams1017: With Marvin Lewis also on the hot seat, who do you think will go first.
Linehan, Lewis, or Kiffin?
Jeff Gordon: Can we make this a reality show? That stuff with Rob Ryan, the Raiders D-Coordinator, was priceless this week. Poor guy, Oakland is a mess. There is a lot of that going around.

ramsfan: This team does not look well coached on either side of the ball. Our D consistently overpursues, our o-line consistently misses assignments and gets penalized, THANK GOD FOR DONNIE JONES AND JOSH BROWN...without them this team would be MUCH WORSE, if that's possible. Will Shaw make the change this week?
Jeff Gordon: Anything is possible after something like that. But, yes, this team does have excellent kicking.

fiskrol: Gordo,

I live in New York and watched the game out here, so good for me since Rams fans in St. Louis will not see another home game on TV this season, but is it me or is Steven Jackson throwing games? LAst week on a couple blocks, he acted like a subway turnstyle and this week again he was awful, Come on running into your QB on hand off?
BY the way Linahan and Haslett need to be run out of town.
when do the Blues start their season
Jeff Gordon: Jackson is fine. The whole offense is in disarray and you can't blame his holdhout for that.

Keith: Now that Baseball and Football season is over. Can we start looking forward to Hockey? This might be darkest time since the late 70's to be a sports fan in St. Louis. Do you think the Rams front office will continue to back Linehan and Haslett?

MIZ - ZOU our 1 bright spot
Jeff Gordon: Who could have imagined that in 2005, Mizzou football would offer the brightest beacon of hope for this sports region.

steve w: I moved to Italy and can't see the games, thanks God.
Jeff Gordon: Good call. Got an extra room in your place?

wiramfan1: hey Warner has thrown fro 2 TDs already today!! Yeah he's washed up we wouldn't want him.. Tooo old... Hey with all that money we saved letting Warner walk we could go out and sign Dante Hall!!! Nice job today Hedgecock, keep leading a winner...
Is there anyway the Rams could get a hold of a very large 335 lber to anchor the middle of the defensive line?

Oh did I mention how much I personally hate what this coaching staff (Linehan /Haslett) is doing to my team? Oh yeah I did..

Go Badgers!!!
Jeff Gordon: How about No. 13? Is that a great story or what? How eager is he to face his old team?

Ocho Gringo: Why won't the Rams test the Secondaries of the other teams?

They are down by three scores and still dinking and dunking? I don't get it.
Jeff Gordon: You have protect the QB -- and have a confident QB -- to go down the field.

BigGame81: ok so the rams played pretty well for the first 3 quarters but blew up in the 4th. how many games will they win this year?
Jeff Gordon: At this rate, another 3-13 appears likely.

Rocknram: Gordo, you said that "They got manhandled. I don't know if the talent has been overrated at any point, but clearly these guys aren't very good".

I know the old stand-bye. Coaches can only coach so much until the players have to play but what about talen evaluation and motivation. In all seriousness, who will be on the short list in December for coach?

Thanks
Jeff Gordon: That depends on where the ownership is. If the team goes up for sale, Saunders might fall into the interim job despite the team's poor offensive showing this year. His contract makes that a possibility.

jimbo2013: A agree with the last poster. Cowher... here's a black check. You fill it in.
Jeff Gordon: But he can do better than the Rams.

hadl2jackson1973: is it possible to fire a head coach and defensive co-ord in the same season without causing chaos for rest of the team?
Jeff Gordon: That would be pretty heavy handed and it would cause chaos. Something has to give soon, though, or else this will REALLY get ugly.

Brandon: How much longer to we have to witness the mess in the 4th quarters? It has happened since Linehan has taken over. He has proven he is not a leader and the vets on the team also have proven not to be leaders and role models to the young players. They were lifeless after the Giants went ahead 27-13. It has been occurring every week. It is frustrating to everyone because this team does have talent and can compete for this division however they certainly do not show it.
Jeff Gordon: That TD drive by the Giants beat the life out of the team. That can't happen. Of course, drives like that can't happen. Where was the D?

midnighter67: What would happen if the Rams offense played the Rams defense?
Jeff Gordon: Marc Bulger gets back on track with 400 yards passing.

John (Ozy Rams Fan): Hi Gordo,

With out a doubt this is the worst team we have had ever. After nearly forty year of being Rams fan I am embarrased to say i am a rams fan. There is no reason to keep the Losehan regime any longer. He worst coach in the league.

Fire him now ! if not sooner
Jeff Gordon: Losing 15 out of 18 does bad things to a team's fan base.

joe passamonte: brian billick?
Jeff Gordon: Way back when he was an offensive genius. He'll be back on his feet soon. Not a bad call.

Rampage88: Should we hire Faulk to help us with signing free agents and the draft? He can't be any worse than the people we have had in the past few years.

P.S. I also can't believe we ran a shovel pass on 2nd and long! That play and the play where we throw to the halfback behind the LOS is the staple of our offense. Hahaha!!
Jeff Gordon: Marshall would love to have a front office role somewhere, but this one may involve too much heavy lifting. Or heavy tossing.

Franklin: I think C.J. Ah-You would've been a nice addition to the interior D-line rotation. Yourself?
Jeff Gordon: Don't see where that would help.

Brandon: How can our offensive line look so bad? Every week it seems there are more blown blocking assignments than first downs. The middle of our line is just horrible and always confused. There were several times on stunts where they let a LB come untouched in on Bulger. Is there help on the market the Rams can turn to? Will Jacob Bell be back next week. Can you shed some light on the O-Line situation and an improvement plan because Leckey and Goldberg clearly are not the answer. Thanks Brandon
Jeff Gordon: This team could use Bell, Romberg and more chemistry. This was a big-time mismatch. Nothing more to say.

Sean: Let me see, with Bennett out, we put a slow Looker and undersized and aging Hall on the field, instead of the younger and faster Burton and Avery who were brought in to put speed on the field?

We start the undersized, 2nd string at best Leckey at center instead of putting Incognito there, and putting Greco in at right guard, who by the coaching staffs own words was impressive there during training camp and preseason?

This team needs to make changes to inject youth and speed in the game, get Chavous out and out in either Condren or Johnson, where is Manning? Put him in. Make some changes on the O-line. Insert the youth into the receiving corp.

If Linny doesn't make changes, it will be the same week to week, this is your Saint Linny Lambs.
Jeff Gordon: Looker had his moments, although I'm not sure I'd go with him on that deep route. At least he was a big upgrade over Bennett.

RXBluejay25: I am watching Blues clips from last year and let's just say there is something to get excited about
Jeff Gordon: St. Louisans can only hope.

Brandon: Can you let me know where to send my resume to apply for the Rams head coaching position when it becomes available? Thanks Gordo.
Jeff Gordon: Just drop it off at Rams Park. Others will be checking in for sure.

Butch: Jeff,

Huge Ram fan since 1973. I never felt this way about a Ram team....Ever. I'm glad (Since there was no way they were going to win anyway), that the score did not remain close. Now there is no way that the entire coaching staff can talk about some kind of improvement from last week's nightmare. I've Never understood why any organization can't see that Coaching in the NFL is more important then in any other professional sport. Linny and the gang must go, but the next coach must be a proven winner and a great motivator for these non-chalant rams. How about Steve Mariuchi? I'm looking at all this as a positive because we have finally hit ROCK BOTTO! Thanks Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: I like the Mooch, but this is a big job. This organization will need a strong football guy willing to kick backside.

Mike Vick's dog: I can't get over how slow the receiving corps is this year. And Tye Hill was getting beat like a drum today. Why is he in the NFL?
Jeff Gordon: Poor Tye. Not going anywhere. Nice guy, means well, but it's not happening.

John: I honestly feel at this stage in the game, replacing Linehan and his staff would do no good other than make the fans feel better. I would let him finish out this season (and contract) and use that money on a decent coaching staff next year.
Jeff Gordon: There are still games to win. By letting this thing slide some more, the Rams would kill their fan base and guarantee the exit of pending FAs.

bluzfn: I was feeling really fustrated about the Rams performance until I watched the last 6 mins. of thre Green bay vs Deroit game. Misery does enjoy company. Are we going to be competitive in any of our games??? I hope T.J Oshie is as good as advertised.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams can still have competitive games. If they play the way they played for three quarters Sunday against bad teams, they'll win some games.

5010 Jack: Gordo,

A few improvements from last week at least on offense BUT what happened to the defense? Haslett's crew sure has been out played the last 2 games. At this point I just don't see Linehan surviving after this season. I know he tried to improve his coaching staff but it looked to me that the Rams laid down in the 4th quarter. This is a coaching staff problem and indirectly works it was up to top management staff. This team could be worse than 2007.
Jeff Gordon: If this team loses any more key players, then, yes, it could be worse than last year.

twilson2000: This is the worst team ever in Ram history bar none. Been a Ram since 1967 even when they moved to St.louis I kept my allegiance.I think they need to fire the weak Scott Linehan and immediately hire Marshall Falk, and breath new life in the organization. What do u think Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: That's a lot of work for Marshall. He would have to work in tandem with strong football men.

Aaron: Gordo

This just gets better and better, I wish I had a chance to be the head coach. I probably have more knowledge of the game than Scott Linahean. I would fire Marc bulger, stephen jackson, cut drew bennet, and orlando pace. Hit the market hard making key offer's to some off them free agents out there. Next let Trent Green get some passes, he's got to be better than Marc. Also we need to work on Corner back positions, and faster Wide Recievers. I hope the players read this article, because the veterans should be ashamed of there lack of building up the young players and showing no enthusiasim.
Jeff Gordon: You'll have to learn about the salary cap before becoming coach. You dump all those guys and the cap hits won't allow you to do a whole lot.

Phillip: Were the Rams trying to set the world record for the most swing passes in a football game?
Jeff Gordon: Well, they worked, didn't they? (Sarcasm alert).

Michael: Wow. I cannot believe what I see with this team. They suck. This is so very hard to see as I have been a fan since 1973 and have lived in Weiner country for 30+ years. I thought we were better on defense. WRONG. I thought were were better on offense. WRONG. I thought we were better on special teams. WRONG. 70+ points against and ONLY 16 for us???!! Are you kidding me??! I am so glad they are not on TV this year as I am embarassed for this team, fans and owners. Looks like we are going for the #1 pick in the draft...again.

Still....I have a small sliver of hope left. Barely.

Michael
Jeff Gordon: There are some other bad teams, so it might just be a top five pick. Take the best OT available!

clzrams: Hey Gordo,
Obviously the Rams coaching staff is not getting it done. The Rams are the worst football team in the NFL. What is sad, is that before Linehan and Hastlet took over, the Rams were one of the best teams. Since the Rams look to repeat what they did in 2007. I would suggest the Rams management fire the coaching staff and bring in a Marty Schottenheimer to finish out the year. This way we would not have to start completely over next year.
What are your thoughts? Also, I am from California and have followed the Rams all of my life. It is sad to see the fans in St. Louis show such lack of support for their team. Is this why they lost the Cardinals in the first place. Keep it up St. Louis and maybe we can get our Rams back in California.
Jeff Gordon: Bringing in a new coach from the outside causes lots of issues. Can't switch playbooks in midseason.

peter: RAMS MIDWEST LAME ORGANIZATION AND COMFORTABLE WITH LOSING PLAYERS.... WAY TOO MUCH MONEY TO PAY THE QUARTERBACK WHEN THE "TEAM" NEEDED ACCOUNTABLE RELIABLE PLAY MAKERS!!! WRONG MOVE TO GO TO ST. LOUIS..... THANKS GEORGIA!!
Jeff Gordon: Well, the two Super Bowls were nice.

Cory: What are the chances of getting Matthew Stafford from Georgia as the #1 pick?
Jeff Gordon: Is he really that good? Is he Matt Ryan? Jay Cutler?

Heath: If we give Cohwer all of the control and power that comes with being a HC/GM, think he'd be tempted? Nothing but upside because there's no where to go but up with the joke this organization has become. Think Chip would fork out the big bucks required for such a move?
Jeff Gordon: Why would Cowher work for an interim owner? That makes no sense.

B-Ball Fan: How much longer before Haslett is fired ? Need a chnge there first.
Jeff Gordon: Anything is possible at this point.

JiveBomber: Next year -> Pinkel?
Jeff Gordon: He's a college guy, happy where he is.

Jordan Staat: Why waste any more time on the coaching staff, WE need change now. Hasselett gives up a 1000 yards in 2 games. They aren't playing for Linehan andd there not going to. You said Al not showing us anything well behind that offensive line know one can do anything. PIck a different O-line coach now chop chop.Moves need to be made now today or tommorrow
Jeff Gordon: You switched offensive line coaches after last season. Do you get the idea it's not the coaching?

boleil: Boy is this going to be a long season. Rigor Mortis has set in and there are 14 weeks to go.
Jeff Gordon: That explains the last five or six minutes of this game.

okcarhauler: Jeff, I know Linehan is trying, and with all due respect to him, Is there any chance he will be FIRED during the bye week? I don't mean just him, Haslett hasn't shown me much too. Any chance to get Dick Vermiel to comeback for the rest of the season? This has got to stop! Doesn't Chip Rosenbloom or John Shaw have a clue? I've been a Rams fan since 1975, and frankly I'm embarrased to even admit that!
Jeff Gordon: Feel the love for Vermeil! Again, this is not the time or place for that.

peter: Dick Vermiel said he made a mistake by leaving the game and wants to coach??
Jeff Gordon: It's been a couple of years. Does he want to go Marv Levy and try one more time? Rams fans would love that, but it seems like a desperate idea.

ron: The Rams problems are first the management, then the coaching staff, then Bulger with his off the back foot sidearm passing. {How many passes does he get knocked back in his face a year? And how many times is he going to get his recievers beheaded? This team needs to clean out the whole operation from top to bottom. NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Those sidearm passes at the end were alarming. Not good for Marc.

Chris B: Jeff,

I've come to believe that the quality of lines are the biggest definer of a good or bad team. Do you agree that these O and D lines are not good and make the Rams loosers.
Jeff Gordon: That appears to be the case. And there is a lot of money tied up in those guys.

midnighter67: In what way did Linehan rip the players? Was he actually yelling and cursing? Is it YouTuble material?
Jeff Gordon: Almost. He didn't quite swear, but he was crazed, by his standards. It was good stuff.

cosmos31: I LOVE the RAMS !!! Keep up the Good work ! Maybe Mizzou could play more games in St. Louis !
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but I don't think we can trade the Rams to get the Tigers.

Monty: Jeff,

you stated that the veterans already feel like this season is doomed. Don't the vets dictate the attitude of a football team?
Jeff Gordon: I believe the the doomed feeling could set in. Maybe it hasn't yet, but it has to be getting. This is an emotional game and the Rams have folded twice.

rams1017: you hate to look ahead, I am a big Bulger fan, but maybe it's time to start thinking Tim Tebow, but then again you have to have a offensive line before you bring in anyone to run the show. Too many BUTs for this team.
Jeff Gordon: Can Tebow play in the NFL? Love the leadership, but look at the trouble Young has had with a bad offense.

Martin in the UK: Nobody could have expected too much from this team this year, but I am surprised by just how bad they are. Where are the leaders on the team? Torry Holt, his TD catch aside, is a shadow of the player he once was and looks like he wants to be somewhere else. Bulger looks shot to pieces, but no QB could do anything behind that O-line. And as for the lightweight defense, I'm beginning to wonder whether Marshall Faulk's remarks about Haslett this week had a ring of truth to it!! It's all too easy to put the ills of the franchise on the Coaches in all seriousness though. Shaw and Zygmunt are a joke and either side of the "Greatest Show On Turf" era, the Rams have been a joke for years! Remember when Martz claimed that Shaw told him that winning SuperBowls or reaching the play-offs was not important?? Well this team is at least 5 years away from being able to challenge for play-off football, so mission accomplished Mr Shaw!!
Jeff Gordon: Martz was just talking garbage when he referenced Shaw. His work since then proves he has a tenuous grip on reality. But the next owner will have lots to do.

ayman228.: Pete Carolle?
Jeff Gordon: Not sure he's tough enough for the job. The media would love him and free agents will love to come here.

Greg: Is it too late to ask for a refund for my season tickets??
Jeff Gordon: Well, you always try to proceed with a fraud claim.

midnighter67: I'm not sure if it's Haslett doing a bad job or if the players are just not good enough. I see a lot of poor tackling, safeties out of position, corners getting beat, etc. We passed on Cutler to get Hill. One of many poor decisions. This defense has very little talent.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, Cutler would look here today. Nice development there.

cosmos31: The Rams WILL be back next week, just like Gordo, they get paid .
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, attendance is mandatory. Gotta show up to get paid.

chris garcia: They were lucky to be in this game for as long as they were. It seems this team is still learning Jims Defense. All I know is heads should begin to roll if next weeks performance is equal to this weeks. What head coaches are currently available? This team needs a spark. I live in California and just put all my tickets on Ebay, I was going go see the Rams at the Ed but am not traveling to go see this circus. valiant effort Linehan

unhappy Rams Fan,
cg
Jeff Gordon: Good luck fetching a good price for those tickets.

Brian: How come every other team seems to be able to use a duo or trio of running backs effectively except for the Rams?? You see Jones-Drew and Taylor in Jacksonville, Fargas and McFadden and Michael Bush in Oakland, Buckhalter and Westbrook in Philly, Peterson and Taylor in Minnesota--I can go on and on and on. All Jackson does for us is trip over his own feet when he has a wide open hole to run through for a touchdown and bang knees with Bulger!! He goes down WAAAY too easily for someone as big, strong, and fast as he is supposed to be. What a waste of cap room. Should have traded him while he was holding out. What a clown!! At least give Pittman a look! He would not have tripped over his own feet.
Jeff Gordon: Pittman didn't go far with that shovel pass when he was in the game. Why not? No blocking. Give Jackson 25 touches with some blocking and he'll produce.

chrahi: Gordo,

I used to enjoy being able to pinpoint a a weakness here and there, watch us correct the problem and win a game now and then. Is there any one place where we can start to "fix" to make any little bit of difference at all, besides canning Linehan for an emotional win - one of the 2 or three we may muster.
Jeff Gordon: Too many holes for that. The defense failed across the board and the offense can't convert third downs.

midnighter67: Yeah, Billick was a genious with the Vikings. The same team and players Linehan was a promising young coordinator with. No thanks. I thought Fox would be a great guy to have but the Panthers are off to a great start. He won't be unemployed next year. I like Cowher but I agree with you that he wouldn't come to this mess. They may have no choice but to hire another inexperienced guy.
Jeff Gordon: It'll be interesting to see who makes that call. Shaw can't be long for this job and Zygmunt can't be on solid ground. This would be a good time to buy this team and start afresh.

Brian: Why the hell wasn't Avery playing earlier in the game? They waited all game to let him return a kick, so he is obviously well enough to play. We need speed in our receiving corps, along with help at every other position, including QB. Look at Warner today!!! Lighting it up of course!!!
Jeff Gordon: Avery has seen very little practice time. But, yes, he needs to get out and give the offense some legs.

Steve: Jeff I don't know what to say other than that the offensive line is a total train wreck. I really think with the exception of Pace and Bell that the entire unit needs to be imploded. The defense looked OK early on but too much was put on their shoulders.
Jeff Gordon: And Pace is at the end. Too bad Setterstrom got hurt. He might have helped with the run blocking.

George Mavris: My take on this year is a lot like 1994. A poor season, a stadium lease with an escape clause and a requirement that the Ed be in the top 25% of stadiums makes for a move back to LA where Roski and other investors are proposing to build a state of the art stadium but just need a team. Chip and Lucia can't afford the probate tax, all the stars are lining up to move back to LA. Whats your take. Thanks, George Mavris, aka "stlramz"
Jeff Gordon: Another owner could have a nice future here, if the stadium issue is resolved for the long haul. Other teams are more likely to go to LA, starting with Jacksonville.

Brian: After watching a lot of football so far today, the Rams have shown to be by far the worst team of the bunch. Look at Oakland and Detroit. At least Detroit put up a good fight. Oakland dominated their opponent! We just lied down again once the going got tough.
Jeff Gordon: Keep in mind, though, that the Rams played two elite teams. We still haven't seem then fold against a mediocre team, so there's that.

Franklin: If we're playing the "this draft pick was a whiff" game, let me toss you this one: Milton Wynn. The enigmatic Wynn is emblembatic of the team's War Room struggles. Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: When the Rams drafted him, they had plenty of receivers. He didn't pan out, but it wasn't the end of the world. Perhaps another need could have been filled, though.

chrahi: You keep saying we're going to win some games against bad teams. There are no bad teams out there when compared to the Rams!
Jeff Gordon: You say that, but there were several lopsided games last week. Seattle wouldn't be ready to the Eagles or Giants right now, although the Hawks would get better coaching.

Sean: We haven't fielded a decent defense since Lovie left. This team is not built for a Haslett defense. But we do have a fast D like when Lovie was here. Maybe if we ran the Tampa Two, let the D-line pin their ears back and rush, causing havoc in the backfield, let the OLB's squat and clean up, drop the fast Witherspoon deep middle coverage, zone the corners with safety coverage over top, forcing other teams to play more plays to make mistakes for turnovers. Remember the bend but don't break style of Lovie, worked for him.
Jeff Gordon: We'll pass this along . . . but I bet some of these guys would be break for Smith, too.

thamnosma: Jeff -- shouldn't the contest with Arizona at the dome be considered an away game for the Rams? My guess is the crowd will be with Warner.
Jeff Gordon: Oh, yeah. The Gridbirds are fun to watch and all the Warner fans will be out in force.

Greg: How about Jimmy Johnson? I am sure he needs to sratch that coaching and/or Front Office itch again??
Jeff Gordon: If only this St. Louis was closer to the Keys. He has a good life, he doesn't need this.

aztec: Living in Denver now, at least I can enjoy the Broncos and watch Jay Cutler wondering what might have been if the Rams had drafted him to take over.

I personally think cleaning house is in order. This team cannot hold up as it is. The players took shots at the media, everyone was saying all was okay (coaches and such), and nobody other than Bulger bucked up to say they played bad and apologize to the fans. It's obvious this coaching staff has no authority. I'd say fire Linehan and make Haslett the interim. Yes, I know his defense has sucked of late but until we can reassess what we have here, that might make the most sense until next season.

Let's go BLUES.
Jeff Gordon: Everyone else wants to fire Haslett, so this is something new. As for Cutler, man he is really taking off. For this team, though, would he really do much?

wiramfan1: Issac Bruce producing in SF As a Ram Fan I am sooooo pleased, (or pissed). Warner, Bruce, Curtis, Fletcher, and all the other Ram outcasts that have gone on to be productive players in the NFL? WOW!! Who are we supposed to cheer for? Linehan and the front office? I would rather see the NFL disband the Rams than see this go on!!!
Jeff Gordon: Ike got shut out last week and it could be a long year in Frisco still. But let's not disband the Rams, since covering the draft each spring is awfully exciting.

AlabamaDuck13: How much longer must we endure this situation?
Jeff Gordon: What situation? The economy? Gas prices? Geez, football is supposed to provide a diversion, not add to our misery.

Upsetramsfan: Who is responsible for this mess? Obviously, Linehan is gone, but will the front office also be fired. How could this team go into another season after spending the money they did on Bulger and Jackson and not significantly upgrade this offensive line. What a disgrace?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams signed a free agent, who got hurt, and drafted a couple of guys for the future. The guys they have should be better, especially with Pace and Incognito healthy.

chrahi: Linehan is getting exactly what he deserves after making our O-line coach and other coaches the scapegoats by firing them. The problem is Linehan and he can't hide from it!!!
Jeff Gordon: As he said himself after the game, "the buck stops here."

Sean: Yes, Stafford is awesome. Watched the game, strong arm, and deadly accurate deep.
Jeff Gordon: He is No. 1 on all the early draft charts and this team ought to have a very high pick. Might he be the guy? We'll see . . .

Brian: Maybe we should switch the uniforms they had when they won the super bowl--the yellow and blue!!! Ever since we switched to the gold and dark blue we have had the worst luck with coaches and players and games. I would also say to bring back the bob and weave, but we would only rarely have an occasion to do that this year
Jeff Gordon: This will take more than an old dance and a costume change to fix. Nostalgia is great, but somebody has to figure out how to get more form the players on hand.

Coralskipper: Would it be possible for the Rams to pretend, maybe for one play, that they actually care?
Jeff Gordon: They cared for most of the game. At the end, not so much. This is an emotional game and when a team is done, it's done.

Bryan: Do you have any clue what Saunders is going to do to get the offense going? As for Haslett, i've said before that I think his scheme causes players to get out of position easily, and our players still have a problem of overpursueing and not staying in their gaps. Do you think Haslett can do anything to get the defense going?
Jeff Gordon: Some of these guys wander out of position because they are undisciplined and not very good. When the Rams play dumb on D, they make Haslett look stupid.

arkramfan: Gordo,

I have been a Ram fan since my parents lived in the same apartment complex as Eddie Meador at Arkansas Tech. I have seen some Ram teams quit before - but they were good teams that had no character. This one is so bad - and has no character.
Jeff Gordon: The ending did bring character into question. Now let's who shows pride and who does during the weeks ahead. You learn a lot about players in these dire situations.

YoMurphy: Hi Gordo. I am not sure if you heard the broadcast by Buck and Aikmen for this game, but if you did, I wanted to ask if you have ever heard announcers critique every level of an organization on air like that before? I haven't.
Buck and Aikmen wanted the viewers to take these bits of information home with them after the broadcast:

The Rams have problems that run so deep that they could be terrible for years to come.
All the veterans should be let go in favor of a youth movement because the vets have clearly given up on the team. (like Herm Edwards has done in KC)
The word "embarassing" should be used to describe the miss tackling on special teams and defense.
Bulger can put the ball in very tight places and lead receivers as well as the top three QB's in the league... if you give him time.
There isn't anything that this team does that is even noteworthy, much less exceptional. (i.e. the team has no identity.)

Every opportunity to take shots on the Rams were taken during this broadcast because there is no way to describe this team that doesn't sound like a "shot." I have always thought that Buck and Aikmen were the best commentator tandem in the NFL, and my opinion hasn't changed. I almost wish I didn't respect them because then I could ignore how brutal they were. Gordo, Do YOU think that this is the worst NFL team to step on the field since the expansion Buccaneers? Can you ever win with a team that is filled with this many losers?
Jeff Gordon: Didn't hear the Fox broadcast, but I can't argue with any of the points. This was just unfortunate.

Istvan: Doesn't this warrant panic?!? If upper management can't see what they need to do next (CLEAN HOUSE!), then why keep wasting time and money on this horrible product?
I know I'm frustrated and venting but this is really embarassing and we as fans deserve better!
I don't care if they did SOME things better today the end and final score is all I care about!!!
CLEAN HOUSE TODAY!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Fair enough. But you wont' get much for your tickets at this point. That ending was gruesome. It could haunt the whole organization for some time.

Phillip: I think these " Los Angeles " Rams fans need to look themselves in the mirror before they try critizing St. Louis fans. Last time I check the Coliseum wasn't filled with blue and gold
Jeff Gordon: And Orange County fans weren't rabid either. They are feeling better today than when the Rams went to two Super Bowl here in the STL.

rockintheburbs: Gordo, why would the Rams draft Donnie Avery? Or anyone else that we picked after the first round? None of them play. There are about 5 other rookie recievers that are doing great and Avery was the first reciever taken in the draft. Our problem is draft picks Tye Hill is awful too.
Jeff Gordon: Avery had a cracked hip, then a leg injury. Once he gets a week or two more of practice, he should be ready to make an impact.

CoachRon: Gordo,

Marshall stated the Rams shouldn't have signed Jackson - waste of money as there was nobody to block for him. Plaed this game a few years, coached it even more. Whole game is about the lines on both sides of the ball. Nothing against Jackson or Bulger for that matter but I'll take an all-pro O-line and D-line with average QB and RB every time.
Jeff Gordon: After watching this game today, how bad would this team be without him? Marshall may not like him, but I've talked to D-coordinators who hate to play against him. He ran for a decent average, but he didn't get enough touches today. That's because the team couldn't sustain much offense.

MarkS: Gordo, do you think the Rams would have signed Jackson to the contract if they knew how bad this team was going to be this year? I mean, I think it was a good deal from both sides, but why tie up any significant amount of money on a player when you you're 3-5 years away from even being competitive?
Jeff Gordon: He was signed for the long-term. He gives the Rams something to rebuild around.

ncdc: The Rams won't move back to LA; they would be #2 behind USC.

Right now, I'm actually more upset that the Fresno State kicker missed three feild goals last night causing Fresno to lose by 3 than I am about today's game. The Rams played a lot better- for three quarters. Lets see if they can play for 4 quarters next week.

Leckey and Goldberg underperformed/got manhandled; Glover is too small and too old; Witherspoon keeps over-pursuing; Chavous can't tackle or cover; Draft played more than Culberson; Adeyanju makes a sack then gets pulled on third and long (?). There were a few blown coverages but one referee's infatuation with the Giants WR's was so obvious that Burress, Hixon, and Co. got away with everything.

The rookie WR's must play! The next two weeks will determine the rest of the year; not one game against a team everybody is picking to go to the Super Bowl and one against the defending champions. No?
Jeff Gordon: Good comment about the Giants receivers. Apparently the World Championship makes them immune from offensive pass interference calls.

wiramfan1: Warner 11-13 247 yards and 2 TDs in one half one half good god just like when he was the leader in St Lou!! I hope everyone in St Louis stays away from every game until the whole team is blown up from the Front Office on down to the Coaching staff..
I promise you that even with my limited coaching experience I could do a better job. The win total may not be higher but the team would respect me and so would the fan base. I would demand better on the field as the game plays out, not "foam at the mouth" after it!!!
Jeff Gordon: A football team is a tough bunch to manage. In reality, only a handful of NFL coaches can really turn a group around. The rest ride the emotional roller coaster with the team. Injuries and momentum play huge roles. When a team is this far down, I'm not Lombardi in his prime could turn them.

Benjamin: Hey Gordo,

I know Saunders & Haslett haven't looked too good in all this, but wouldn't removing Linehan send some sort of ripple of urgency throughout the organization... plus what's the worst that could happen, they lose by 42 next week?

Also, can you please tell the marketing department at the paper that first thing monday morning I'm calling Buy Direct so they can ease off the pop up adds. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Would the players even flinch if the front office fired Linehan? Probably not. But you're right, something must to be done to create at least the appearance of urgency.

va_ramsfan: I have to disagree the rams waited till the fourth quarter to collapse; if Manning had any kind of accuracy it would have been 28-3 by half. and the offense was just as bad at the beginning of the game as at the end.
Jeff Gordon: Manning missed a few deep throws, or there were some miscommunication. Yes, it could have been worse in the first half. But the Rams did pull within a TD with a spectacular play. That was significant. They were right there.

David B: There is no question the drafting decisions have been weak. Hill is not good enough. Long is not a number 2 pick. Cutler could have already replaced an over rated Bulger (a mediocre QB who put up numbers under the Martz system just like everyone does). Then again, coaching matters. The coaches make these players and selected them. Fire Linehan and Haslett immediately . Let Vermiel finish the year and help search for a long term solution with some connection to history, success and good coaching.
Jeff Gordon: Lot's of love for Vermeil today. Gotta say, it was nice to see Dick up on the video board, talking about the good old days with Georgia.

randy travis: after this season is complete ..... that will be 4 winning seasons in the last 19 years ................ and u are so naive gordo if u think what martz said was garbage about shaw ......... i know way more about this teams history than you been following every game for over 30 years and believe me .... since georgia and shaw took over ... rams care only about money ..... i know every team has the bottom line to look at but what i am saying is this is well documented ever since carol died .... sorry to enlighten you ....... and quit mentioning the two superbowl fluke years - the one they lost and the other they lucked out and beat tampa eventhough they were manhandled and dominated in their own building .... talk about luck
Jeff Gordon: You can say the Rams front office isn't smart enough, but the money WAS spent. Fans have complained about the dollars Bulger got and Jackson got. Pace got the bucks. So did Little. So did Tinoisamoa. Long just got top dollars. Vermeil got top dollar to coach and Mad Mike got the power. Mad Mike had some insanely bad drafts, which started the demise. Then he tried to get everybody above him fired so he could have even more power.

Steve A: The players seem like they don't respect Linehan. He certainly doesn't inspire they to play better. Heck, Joe Vitt, brought more to the table. There has to be some out of work coach out there that would be willing to take a chance on this franchise.

Schottenheimer? Mooch? Somebody that has had some success in the NFL that the players will listen to.
Jeff Gordon: You're right, Joe Vitt was a better head coach.

malibu3: Do we see any differences or is this what we can expect all season long. One butt whipping after another. The money they paid for Steve Jackson was retarded. Do you see them winning over 3 games this season?
Jeff Gordon: They could win from 3 to 5, despite what you've seen. But how does this group put the repeated failure behind them and regain some fire and confidence? Once a team does on a coach, that guy has trouble bringing it back.

Greg: This looks like the Rams circa 1998 with Tony Banks and June Henley.. I can't believe I live in NEW JERSEY and bought season tickets for this team. I don't know who is a bigger fool me or Chip (for thinking this team is good).
Jeff Gordon: At least Tony threw the ball downfield. Not always to the right team, but he threw it downfield.

Alan: This team looks like a prime candidate to go 0-16..its sad, after all the effort to secure the franchise, that is has come to this..is the same effort going to be put forth when this franchise can opt out of the Dome lease in 2015?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will blow tens of millions of dollars in revenue out the door by playing like this until 2015. So something will have to change.

BakoCAramFan: How long does it take for a new owner to get control over a team? If a sale happened tomorrow, would control begin immediately?
Jeff Gordon: It's quite a process. The league has to approve it, of course, and transactions of that sort are very complicated. Until the sale was official, the new guy could only advise the old guys.

gene: These are not rookies on the offensive line. The skill positions are above average. Shows how much coaching can affect a team. Martz would have this offense at least scoring a few touchdowns.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but remember that Saunders is trying to run the same scheme. If Martz ran it -- and emptied the backfield like the old days -- then Bulger would leave the dome wearing toe tags.

rockintheburbs: Gordo, Do you think Don Avery will start next week or is he gonna be another terrible second round pick ex:(Brian Leonard). P.S. Tye Hill was picked one pick before Cromartie wow and look at that career comparison so far.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, the Rams would welcome a do-over on Hill. Avery plays Holt's position, so he won't start. He will play more, unless he gets hurt again. Look for Burton to see more time, too.

Why is Hall on the team?

Russ: Hi Jeff - just an observation but the Rams seem to be inept in about every facet of the game except Punting and Kicking. Not going to win alot of games when those are your strengths. I think it is time for a change, 2+ years of this and we have regressed to the laughing stock of the league. It truly hurts as a long time Ram fan to watch this.
Jeff Gordon: But at least they will send their kicker and punter to the Pro Bowl . . .

mike woomert: hi i live i pennsylvania. have been a rams fan since 1969. i am lost as to why no one can block or catch passes or play defense on this team . there are some college teams around here , kutztown , alnbright ,bloomsburg who are going to petition the nfl to get the rams on their schedule .
Jeff Gordon: The Giants had something to do with all that. They are just physically and mentally better.

dan: Wanted to go to a game this year, haven't been to one since 2001. I live in Hawaii and was looking forward to coming in Oct. guess I will be staying home, no sense in waiting $1000 to watch something this bad.
Jeff Gordon: Definitely stay on the Islands. Spend the dough on something more entertaining than the Rams, like an ant farm.

JD: Hey Gordo, I would like to ask about two formar 1st round picks. Has Hill just simply lost his confidence and has Carriker regressed? Seems neither one can make a play.
Jeff Gordon: Both statements are fair.

Sammy42: No good o-line play

Shoddy d-line play, shoddy LB play, horrible coverage in the secondary

Matador tackling

It's time for the players to go,and take the coach's with them

Sickening, but look at the bright side Rams fans

Only 14 games left in this miserable season

If only that would be the end of this nightmare
Jeff Gordon: Look at the bright side -- there has to be major change, right? Right? Another 8-8 might have keep things as usual. A free fall would force change.

gabrielpd@aol.com: Dear Jeff, Rams need to cut players now. Start with hill and Chavous. Next fire head coach at break if they cant win the next 2 games. Whomever was the idiot that let Warner leave should resign too. I have been following the Rams since 1968 ,and changes should be made soon. My coach would be Al Saunders
till the end of the year. If players respond let him coach , if not fire everyone and start from scratch players and coaches. thanks
Jeff Gordon: Ditching Warner was Martz's call, so you're out of luck. And the team lacks the secondary depth to dump two starters, regardless of how bad things have been.

superjim: hey gordo,

I've been thinking, if Linehan goes in the bye week or at the end of the season it's probably Al Saunders to replace him. Everyone hates Haslett (even though I'd keep him as d-coach, at least he cares), so it won't be him or the Rams can forget any season ticket sales. Think about it, why did Al Saunders join? He left Washington because he didn't become head coach, and we're an awful o unit so it's not like he's going to enjoy a lot of success here. I think there's a gentleman's agreement that he will be the next head coach if Linehan fails. any thoughts?
It looked even worse in the UK if that's possible
Jeff Gordon: His contract length does set him up to take over if it comes to that, yes.

randy travis: as far as im concerned scott linehan and jim haslett have won only one game as head coach .... there first over denver 18-10. ......... the other wins were either during garbage time when the season was long over 5-8 the first year aginst three horrible teams .... and of course three last year after 0 and 8 start ..... completely meaningless wins .... and the others were those fluke fumbles by warner and favre which were gift wins for scott and crew
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, but they also lost some close games on weird plays. Not so much lately, though.

BC: One word for you.....Marty!

That will be the new coach of the Rams!
Jeff Gordon: Marty as president, his kid Brian as coach.

sean: SORRY JEFF

BUT THIS WHOLE TEAM NEEDS TO BE BLOWN UP AND START OVER, STARTING WITH THE COACHING STAFF. THEY ARE ILL PREPARED TO PLAY, AND THEY CANT EVEN RUN A SINGLE PLAY FROM SCRIMAGE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY. THANKS FOR LETTING ME VENT
Jeff Gordon: NO PROBLEM!

Greg D: Gordo,
Looks like the Rams need a complete coaching overhall, or are the players that bad? I mean what's up with this franchise? Excluding the Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk glory years which were 3 tops this franchise has stunk it up. Why do you think they are so consistantly bad? Their labels as same old sorry Rams and Lambs is unfortunately fitting. I think this team neads to be sold to someone else.
Jeff Gordon: And at some point the team will be sold. Is Rush Limbaugh the answer?

superjim: Hey Gordo,

this is the first time ive moaned in years...so stick with me. The o-line is beyond poor, bench leckey, bench barron (or release him, 'flop' doesnt do him justice), let's get some young players some experience. greco, scheuning and move incognito to centre. we can't be worse, and barron just makes me wanna cry. ive never seen anyone care less about his employer. bulger...don't get me started on bulger. he's on a huge contract and irrespective of the blocking he should be producing more. he's scared. grow up. yeh, they hit hard, i know, but stand in and make a throw. or, dare i say, dodge one of the blitzers!!! he just stands there, or sometimes starts to fall before they even get there. he's so immobile i'm amazed he gets above 3 on a bleep test. the commentators said he looked angry today. good, repressing it is healthy (sarcasm). shout at someone! come on mark, you're the leader of the team, act like it. the last time he shouted (2006) we finished the season 3-0. even jimmy kennedy played hard, and that's saying something. as for the receivers i'm at a loss as for why looker was the number 2 receiver today. let burton get adjusted because clearly this season is a write off. let's play 5WR on each of the first 10 snaps in seattle, scare their defense, undermine jim mora before he gets the HC job by dismantling the d. speaking of the d...i have no qualms with the d line, i'd like to see more of clifton ryan in the rotation but i can't complain. the linebackers are the same, they're giving it their all and are very overworked. chavous is smart but a yard short of pace, and tye hill is thick but plenty fast. i like bartell, and i think him, brown and manning jr would be a better cb rotation than we have now. hill is a bust, barron a bust, let's get rid of them and admit our mistakes. they wont magically improve. linehan has to go, al saunders will replace him, already a done deal i reckon
Jeff Gordon: You get rid of all these guys and replace them with guys off the street and you see 100-0 losses.

Floyd: I am a Rams fan in Dallas. I watch the Rams via "super fan". I am beginning to hate I purchased the super fan package to the tune of $400. The commentators keep telling me every week that the Rams seem to give up easily. They have no enthusiasm? They do not play inspired. Are there any leaders on this team at all?
Jeff Gordon: If there are, they are doing a good job of laying low.

cobramanSTL: El Gordo! Very quickly: I see Linehan as Overmatched and Haslett as Underperforming, despite the lack of talent. With that beind said, who goes first and when? IMO, it will be during the Bye week...Thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: That is NOT Chip Rosenbloom's inclination, so he will need some convincing.

theskyhorse: Short of a complete turnover of players, coaches and managing personel, is there any other way to remove the cancer that has very obviously taken hold of this team in a death grip?
Jeff Gordon: There aren't just one or two issues here. The whole group has to elevate. It a major job, not easily done on the fly during a season.

randy travis: im not knocking the st louis fans ..... im from la and im just surprised there is even one person in the stands .... because here in la there certainly wouldnt be any with this product being put out on the field for the last 19 years .... so as far as im concerened st louis fans are way more supportive of this garbage than we would ever be ..... but is that something to be proud of st louis ?
Jeff Gordon: We cling to our Super Bowl memories with great fondness. And if Arizona goes all the way this year, the Cardinals fans in Phoenix will do the same.

Lawarence Marmie: So, are you still convinced that this defense will finish in the top 3rd of the league? Or are you still going to hang onto the excuse that Little is hurt for 72 pts and a 1,000 yds of offense in 2 games? Are you still sticking to your Haslett is aggressive and uses many exotic scheme rhetoric?
Jeff Gordon: I'm shocked that the defense has played this bad. The guys who had to step up -- like Hill -- went the other way. This was a solid effort for three quarters, but the collapse at the end was telltale.

Marc Bulger Fan: While it's nice to hear that Linehan ripped into the players after this mess, it would be really great to hear that Marc Bulger laid into his o-line after today. He needs to do something, say something, b/c i'm getting pretty sick and tired of watching him hit the ground, not have enough time to make plays etc. I don't care what anyone says it starts w/ the O-line if you don't have that then you have nothing. Marc really needs to lay into those guys.

Something needs to be done about the D as well, they are horrible.
Jeff Gordon: Both sides got manhandled. The Giants are a great team, obviously, but that was ugly.

coleyrock: Hey Jeff thanks for answering questions? But is it me or can everyone else see that the d-fence is not in position to make plays. The scheme that Haslett plays does not work for this level of talent. We have no ball hawking or shut down corner, safties are slow reacting to the ball. This will hurt the team for years to come..

Rainy day in St. Louis
Jeff Gordon: So what talent of level is this? This is the NFL. It's time to step up.

wiramfan1: I agree Lombardi himself probably couldn't turn this organiztion around in a season but he would demand respect! And he would get respect and the fans would see that, and yes they would respect and back the team..
Thanks for letting me rant gordo!
Jeff Gordon: Could you see Vince with some of these guys? I thought the Rams cleaned up much of the mess with the guys they've let go, but there is obviously more to do.

Lawarence Marmie: It seems that Haslett's defense is predicated on crossing his fingers and hoping QBs make bad throws. Something Eli did several times in the first half or this game would have been close to 60 pts. Are you just as tired as seeing him looking amazed that the same defensive scheme he throws after week after week, season after season just doesn't work? And are you surprised that Tye Hill can even be an incredible liability as a nickel or dime back?
Jeff Gordon: It's interesting that the Rams changed offensive line coaches, got most of their old starters back . . . and then fell right back into the same pattern of last year. Now fans want the new offensive line coach fired. Guys just have to pull their heads out and execute.

randy travis: why do u people in stlouis keep going to the games .... its unbelieveable the support u give these clowns .... i mean we here in la managed only like 19,000 with this kinda product at the very end, yet u guys still show up .......... when you all gonna learn, its the peeps running the team ... departed georgia, and shaw that have been running this team into the ground ever since she took over ........ and awwww chip u dont like la because we had bad comments about your mom .................... welllll duhhhhhhhhhh , why wouldnt we?
Jeff Gordon: And we were supposed to honor and celebrate Georgia's memory today. Oh, well.

Brandon: Do you think the result of the first two games will cause this team to continually fold if they fall down by 10 or more points? So far they have not shown any resilience and toughness you need to win in this league.
Jeff Gordon: Good question. The margin of defeat for this team has been staggering.

Jeff Dickinson: Please explain to me how Jim Haslett is keeping his job as defensive coordinator. Not only have the Rams lost the first two games, but they have gotten embarrassed, giving up 79 points. I'm embarrassed to be a Rams' fan right now, especially with incompetent coaches running the show.
Jeff Gordon: In retrospect, maybe the team did need to find a big veteran linebacker and a better safety than Chavous -- among other things. But the team has invested plenty in the D, so there is no excuse there.

Brandon: Can anyone locate Dan Reeves since Cower and Shotenhiemer seem like bleak possibilities?
Jeff Gordon: A younger coach wouldn't be terrible. Look at Whisenhunt in Arizona.

Lawarence Marmie: All you ever say to Haslett's terrible defenses is that it wasn't a "resume builder"- will you ever been a man, stand up, and say the guy is a hack who got too much credit for the defense in Pittsburgh?
Jeff Gordon: And then he went to New Orleans and did solid work for a franchise in a bad situation. New Orleans hadn't won a playoff game in 34 years. Faulk rips Haslett, but Jimmy's D came through in that playoff game. If the guy is hack, he wouldn't have had the success he had before getting involved in this mess.

chrahi: Wouldn't you agree that it's impossible for a team to go 0-16? I ask this because in the end you will run into a playoff team who clinched something and will rest the starters rather than risk injury to hand a team a goose egg in the wrong column for the year. Agree?
Jeff Gordon: It's had to imagine a team going winless in the NFL, especially a team in a bad division with multiple Pro Bowl candidates.

Lawarence Marmie: Do you think Josh Brown might regret signing that contract? Yeah, it's a lot of money, but at least he would have a shot at the playoffs.
Jeff Gordon: Losing is tough, but playoff teams often cut their kickers to fill other needs. Nature of the game.

ottoman89: Any chance the Rams could look into getting Quinn from Cleveland. Blow this thing up and start with a young QB who has a ton of potential?
Jeff Gordon: One of those two will have to go at some point. Either could help this team moving forward.

cobramanSTL: Do The expected "changes" happen at the Bye Week?

I sat through the Felony and Rich Brooks "era" and won't give up the Tickets, but this is just a Horrible NFL product!
Jeff Gordon: Ah, Felony. Wonder if that dog is still alive.

randy travis: hey orange county .... at least we got the angels .... the class of the league ..... we may not win the world series every year but at least they know how to run an organization ....... lol another walk off for figgins and the angels yup yup
Jeff Gordon: Great baseball owner in Anaheim, Maybe the best. Another world title in the making?

Tony: Haslett used blitz packages to make things interesting last year, but this year, the defense is sitting back on its heals. What happened to moving Witherspoon all around in blitz packages? At this rate the only part of the team that will be worth advertising for next year is the kickers. Maybe next year's marketing brand can be "We have good legs"??
Jeff Gordon: The Giants pounded the Rams on the ground and then set up the play-action stuff. Tough to go blitz crazy on that.

Harold: In the second half the Rams had a 4th and 6 on their side of the 50, down by 2 td's I think. The tv announcers said Linehan was sending out the punting team, and Bulger called a time out. He went to the sidelines and returned to the field to convert a 4th down. Did Bulger OVERULE the head coach? What a circus!!
Jeff Gordon: Don't know, but obviously somebody pointed to the scoreboard.

chrahi: This thing has gone down hill so far and so fast that sometimes I think if we just go to sleep then everything will be better in the morning! But how many times do we have to "blow this thing up" before it works? We're 1-2. Vermeil blew it up with Martz - 1-0, Shaw blew it up with Linehan, 1-1, Linehan blew it up last season, 1-2. It's easier to just draw straws!
Jeff Gordon: In the NFL, you can blow up a front office or a coaching staff, but it's tough to gut a team. There is always transition, but if there is a coaching change, the next guy would have to win with a lot of these guys. You can't find 50 new players in one year.

Bryan: I think you can agree this team has the talent to win the games. The problem I see seems to be mental. I believe the core guys(Holt,Bulger,McMichael,Pace, Witherspoon, etc.) Still believe they can pull this team out of this mess but I feel the rest of them just don't believe in their cause. I don't know if firing Linehan will change the mentality much but next season the Rams do need to get a new owner and get some better people in the FO. They also are going to have to get rid of alot players on this team.
Jeff Gordon: New owner or strong new president -- either way, it must start at the top.

JerzeeMo: I really question Linehan now more than ever as a head coach he does'nt have the personality for the job, (whoever hired him blew it and the team up)the front office decisions that started off with dealing Manumaleuna, not signing Pickett, signing Bennett over Curtis, dumping Bruce, drafting poorly i.e. Barron, Byrd, Tye Hill, Claude Terell, they need an owner who is involved and not letting John Shaw, Zygmut run the show; Georgia put too much trust in these guys and they are part of the problem they hired Linehan they need to go, overall we need new ownership to fix this loyal fans will watch from home because this team cannot compete and Linehan will have a meltdown like Ditka with New Orleans, Mora with the Colts it will happen.
Jeff Gordon: Linehan very nearly had a Jim Mora meltdown during his postgame chat.

rockintheburbs: If we have not won a single game going into the bye week do you think Linny will be terminated? Also do you think Justin King would be starting if he were healthy? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: King would be playing if healthy, yes. Starting? Don't know. He would be one more guy pushing Hill.

cobramanSTL: Not a question, but a Comment to Randy Travis:

We go to games because we LOVE Football, that's why...
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, and he sees your point.

Doug McLeod: Boy, nearly 30 years as a Rams fan and this offense has to be the worst. Dieter Brock moved the Rams better than this crew. I would say that the Scott Linehan experiment is over and the Rams need to blow up the house and start over. Outside of Holt and Jackson, no one should be safe. Hard to believe that less than two seasons ago, this team was 5-0 and talking playoffs....Pathetic....
Jeff Gordon: Dieter Brock! Yes!

Lawarence Marmie: Does Hasbeenlet pay you money on the side not to criticize him in the Dispatch each week? Seriously, you have never said anything negative about the guy despite 2+ yrs of defensive futility. I think I should notify the IRS that you might have unclaimed money in your bank account.
Jeff Gordon: I have noted the defensive shortcomings, yes, and it's not like I'm throwing him bouquets in these chats. The D's inability to respond to that Holt catch was the turning point of the game. And I addressed the D's collapse last week in STLToday.com as well. But I'm not going to crush the guy's whole career. He gave Martz fits when those teams had at it.

RAMFanNY: Hello from NY Jeff!
Well, another week, another train wreck. They did not look too bad at moments today, then completely crashed in the last 1/2. A few ideas and questions to see what you think.

1. Rush L is NOT the answer. He would continue the spiral we are on.

2. Marshall? Would Ziggy need to be gone?

3. Linehan ripped into the guys? After watching his press conferences on line, I can not imagine him animated or "ripping" anyone...do we have witnesses?

4. Torry, Marc, Orlando, Steven, I can not believe one of these dudes hasn't stepped up...are they trying to remove these coaches?

5. With the fans fleeing like rats on a sinking ship how long can Chip say he doesn't want to switch horses mid stream.

I remain a Ram till the end
Jeff Gordon: Chip was eerily upbeat today, but that could change.

drop_frame2002: Mark Bulger, Alex Barron, Fakhir Brown, Dante Hall, Tye Hill, Corey Chavous.

Is there any one of those players that could start on another team?

-Dave E
Jeff Gordon: Brown, for sure, but not playing hurt. Barron would start on a lot of teams, too, because there are a lot of bad tackles out there.

rfa77: Three years and counting. It's as if the Rams are free falling into the Mariannas Trench. Ok, as bad as this sounds, I'm almost hoping for a blowout next week so that the final coup de grace can be administered and get this team turned around. Last thing we need is a decisive victory because Seattle may have an off day and then here the battle cries of, "We're on our way to the Superbowl!"
Jeff Gordon: Seattle is really hurting. The Hawks can't possibly keep up their dominance of this team, can they?

tc: Hi Gordo,

Greetings from up in Canada. Ugh! This is why I get the Sunday ticket?? What drives me absolutely bananas is the following: the score is 34 - 13, with 4 minutes to play, and our coach takes a timeout to stop the clock? Whatever for? Are we going to score 3 TD's in 4 minutes when we DON'T EVEN HAVE THE BALL? I guess Haslett must have thought the same thing as he just let the Giants just RUN FREE into the endzone.
Linehan did the exact same thing in Phili, less than 2 minutes to go in the first half, we have ONE timeout left and he uses it.. sure enough 90 yard TD - game over.. Phili could have run it out even if the Rams didn't take the timeout.. yet he takes it anyway... and we see the results.. has anyone asked him about this?

TC
Jeff Gordon: This isn't college, You have to keep trying, right? Right?

randy travis: gordo ..... just want to say u have gained tremendous respect from me with this chat .... i wasnt that flattering of you either with my naive comment about you ....... but u showed me something ..... hung in there and answered all my questions or rants without really taking a potshot back at me ................. tremendous respect gained ....... and lol... unbelievably uve been answering questions for like 59 hours .... your awesome today
Jeff Gordon: I tried to finish out better than the Rams. It's not easy, though.

chrahi: Gordo, You broke my heart! How can you leave Bulger out of Drop-Frame2002 post of hopeful starters??? I think Lovie would LOVE to have Marc in the /windy City
Jeff Gordon: Maybe, but right now Marc needs to step back and gather himself. Even J.T. O'Sullivan ranks ahead of him now. It's sad to see, because I was claiming he was a top five guy a year ago.

Of course, I was also raving about my guy Haslett . . .

That appears to be it. Thanks for all the questions and comments. Hope next week is better.
