jerry Cox: How are Bruce and Holt doing this year? I thought Holt did not play well last yeasr and was not sad to see him go. But One score in two games is not good. We need Holt or someone like him on all downs but especially on 3rd down.
jerry
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could use a receiver like Torry Holt in his prime, yes. With Robinson getting hurt, this team is woeful at WR.
johndeere: i look at the sats of the last two games of the rams, offence and defence,ect..it dont look that bad,but then you look at points score, and wow,not good at all....whats your take on that.....ty
Jeff Gordon: They don't play good football. At critical game points, they make mistakes and not plays. They find ways to fail. That is what bad teams do.
Ozy Rams Fan: Hi Gordo,
What a load of rubbish the Rams are, we are much worse of a team then the last few years even. This team will be lucky if it doesnt' go 0-16, pray the lions have a bad day. The offence if not of a NFL level.
In my opinion, the management of this team applied to much team stripper, getting rid of just to many players to be competitive now. They have left such a bare bones team, the recieving core is a joke. There is just nothing left to support about this team. Hey Spags if you get rid of all the players, who do they fans support ?
The last few bad years have been difficult to watch, but it is worse now. There is just nothing to be encouraged about this team. The management has left the fans zero to support. This is not a improving situation, there is no moral victory, when you play the way this team does.
What do you think Gordo ? to much team stripper applied ?
PS: Josh Brown r you gonna make a kick this year, wish you kicked for the seagulls like you do for us.
Ozy Rams fan
Jeff Gordon: When a team wins five games in two years, it's hard to argue that they took too mich "talent" off the team. Change will continue from week to week. Expect more departures.
BakoCAramFan: Observations:
1) That first half couldn't have gone worse for the Rams--TWO turnovers in the red zone, three penalties killing great offensive and defensive plays, three injuries including the starting quarterback, best wide receiver and starting safety--yet they are only down nine points;
2) Kyle Boller may not have the arm, but the most effective pass the Rams have right now is the two step slant, and considering the offensive line problems shortening up the time the quarterback holds the ball without running is a GOOD IDEA;
3) Unlike the last few Rams teams, this group DOES NOT QUIT;
4) As long as Adam Goldberg is good enough to be a Rams lineman, the Rams will have a horrible offensive line;
5) As long as Stephen Jackson falls sideways or is forced out of bounds more often than he falls FORWARD, the Rams are not going to have an effective running game;
6) Kyle Bollar more and more will earn the respect of his team, and as long as SJ can be even marginally effective, the Rams offense will continue to improve with him at QB;
7) Does anyone remember a team that more often blows itself up with bad situational penalties?
Jeff Gordon: I agree with most of that, but Jackson ran for 117 yards behind the line that you criticized. That means he had a fabulous game under tough circumstances.
Josh: Gordo,
I know it was one game, but can we finally get Bulger out of there for Boller. He led two scoring drives in less than 1 quarter. Bulger had 1 in 9 quarters. Honestly, it seemed like the offense got rejuvenated once Boller got it. The running game opened up and the blocking seemed like it improved. The Bulger reign is over. Boller had the same exact situation as Bulger (minus our best WR too) and got the Rams into the endzone twice. The Bulger apologists have nothing left.
Jeff Gordon: Boller's 75.2 passer rating won't cut it. He led a couple of TD drives, which is notable. The rest of his possessions were a struggle, to say the least.
Lawarence Marmie: Hey Gordo,
I have to say, I became a big Flajole fan today. My favorite series was when we had them pinned inside the 5 on a great punt by Donnie Jones and Flajole decided to play it safe, lay back, and let them off the hook. I mean most people would say trying to cause a turnover or at least keeping them pinned deep and getting yourself good field position would be the way to go, but Flajole is an innovator. He's a new breed of coordinator that believes it's better to play not to lose and put the pressure on an already struggling offense with a back up quarterback and make them have to drive a long field.
Jeff Gordon: Facing a porous offensive line, the Rams rush four -- Little, Long, Ah You and Hall -- got some penetration but failed to contain. Rodgers' ability to buy time with his feet was the story in this game. That allowed him to make some big plays and and run for first downs (or a TD) as needed.
Lawarence Marmie: The decision to take Donnie Avery over DeSean Jackson looks better and better every day, no?
Jeff Gordon: Donnie just learn to catch the ball, yes. That would be helpful.
chris: Like I said "cursed" we cant get a break or cant make one. Its going to be a long year. Jackson has 2 x 100yd games the last 2 weeks and no victory. No pass rush, cant blame the secondary on the long passes, when you get no pash rush. The penalties..This is franchise going no where...What will the rams do now?
Jeff Gordon: I believed they would make a stand in this game because they had to. Instead, they buckled early and folded late. They told their fans, and themselves, that there is no hope this season.
Will Spags well as he tries to coax a complete game from his team at some point this season.
Lawarence Marmie: Now Gordo, wouldn't you say the ineffectiveness of our blitz is due to two important factors:
1.) We don't do it enough
2.) When we actually do blitz, it's usually the same blitz in the same predictable situations so it's easy for teams to pick it up
Jeff Gordon: Also, the Rams have a terrible team, as evidenced by 30 losses in 35 games.
peter: Randy McMichael...Dropped a pass in the 4th quarter that was a hugh play..Rams could've had a 1st down...He "can't" catch!!! Why is he still there, Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: He did catch one later. That would have earned derisive cheers, but Rams fans were gone at that point.
Ozy Rams Fan: Hi Gordo,
With the game about finished. Some thoughts...
New return man did good job, nice pickup.
I am a big Bulger supporter, but will say Boller did a nice job coming in with a spark.
Will shurmur ever learn how to call plays. Again in the 3rd qtr with the defence getting tired and jackson running strong, he calls pass plays which our recievers drop and stall drives. He did that last week and cost us the win. Shurmur really needs to learn how to use Jackson as a closer.
We injured our starting QB and both starting WR. just another game day in RAMS pergatory..
Ozy Rams Fan
Jeff Gordon: The Robinson and Butler injuries make a bad team worse. Those two guys were playing well.
PATHETIC: This team is by far pure and plain pathetic. Why are the Rams so F'IN gaud awful bad that when they're down 14-23 at half, fans are getting excited, PLEASE!!! Talk about placing the bar low. Is winning freaking 8 games (or even being competitive) in a league set up for parity too much to ask. Geeze. By the way at the Presser, it would be nice for one of you media Bozo's to mention to Spags to stop hugging these overpaid clowns (Bartell, Bulger, ect...) and put his foot up their confused arses! The fans deserve more than the BS product they've put on the field WEEK AFTER WEEK FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS!!!!
PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Bartell is a good player. He played with a quad muscle strain this week, so that didn't help. As for Bulger, Boller scored some points today -- but he didn't finish the job.
He had a chance to really boost himself in this game, but he finished badly.
peter: West Coast offense sucks...Avery & Co. need to be running "verticle" patterens. Lul the defense to sleep with Jackson and brun them deep?? Why no deep balls to the wide outs?
Jeff Gordon: Teams will load up the box against Jackson. If the Rams never stretch the field, they will never win a game. What Jackson did was heroic, given the circumstances.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
I'm getting a little worried that the companies who do laundry for the NFL might file a greivance against the Rams on the grounds the Rams are particiating in bevahior which is directly effecting their economic well-being. If a judge looks at the numbers, he might decide in favor of the laundry companies because he would find it impossible that an NFL team is unable to tackle or sack QBs as infrequently as the Rams are and they must be playing that soft on purpose.
Jeff Gordon: They are just a bad team. That's it.
Lakerii: Jeff,
Good game today not a "W" but still an improvement. It is amazing that a "2nd string QB" with a little fire in his gut can do with the same offense that Bulger can't seem to motivate or score with. Is there any political way that Spags can keep Marc benched for injury purpose to see if Boller can step up again and at least do what he did today and make a game of it on Sunday ?
NY Rams Fan
Jeff Gordon: If Boller wants this job, then he better do more than he did in the second half. That was dreadful.
ramsfaninnc: didn't get to see the game, do the rams look better to you with boller playing qb?
Jeff Gordon: For two drives, yes. After that . . . not so much. His mobility is a big asset, but is not an accurate passer.
jerry Cox: The Rams are just awful. As I recall about 9 years ago San Fran started losing and then got rid of all their best players. Now after 9 years of rebuilding they still have a weak temm, but may contend for a playoff place. The Rams have chosen the same plan as the 49s, but I fear it will take them longer than 9 years to compete. So so sad.
jerry
Jeff Gordon: A good football regime can make progress in one year and turn it in two. So we'll see if they guys get it done.
Lawarence Marmie: Since it really looked like Boller likes going to his check down recivers and TE's- don't you think it really would have benefited him greatly to have a target like The Klop to throw at?
Jeff Gordon: Ah, the Klop. The memories are still so vivid . . .
Scott: Turnovers not withstanding, we were burned by big play's. What happened?
Jeff Gordon: Rodgers bought himself time on many of them. Sometimes he scrambled out of trouble, sometimes he got time with a designed roll out or bootleg. And the early loss of safety James Butler hurt the Rams, too.
Lawarence Marmie: Correct me if I'm wrong, but with Detroit winning today- don't the Rams now own the longest losing streak in the NFL? Congrats- to a bunch of incredible losers!!!
Jeff Gordon: They are the worst team in the NFL. They have time to prove otherwise this season, but it is on them to get it done.
peter: Gordo.. This means the Rams will draft a "Quarterback"..right?!! I'm so happy now..
Jeff Gordon: Maybe. If Bradford has a bad shoulder, this may not be the best QB class ever.
Aaron: Gordo
AS I've been saying in the past Marc Bulger is washed up, Kyle boller proved that today by upstaging marc bulger all day. They should really make the move by replacing bulger for good. It's to bad by the time he came in it was too late them to missed drives really hurt.
Rams Fan
Jeff Gordon: Boller had time to finish the job in this game and he didn't get it done. His passer rating was 39.6 in the third quarter and 30.8 in the fourth. Don't rush out and buy your Boller jersey just yet.
jetplt67: Can you give us what you know about the injuries today.
Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Robinson (knee, MCL) and Butler (ankle) could be serious. We'll know more about those two and Bulger Monday.
Ben: another game the Rams could have won. I was so frustrated when Shurmur would call that stupid 5 yard pass play on first down and it would go incomplete. That was when they stopped us. Loved Boller in the first half.
Jeff Gordon: When a stupid five-yard pass play is called, a team has to complete it. If you can't complete five-yard passes at key points, you can't win games. That is where the Rams stand today.
Josh: Same old thing. Too many turnovers, failure to convert 3rd downs, and untimely penalties. We played better but the same things nailed the coffin.
Jeff Gordon: Yep. Spagnuolo doesn't want to talk about, but he hasn't broken the cycle of self-destruction.
Vastleftwingconspiracy: What do you guys think is causing this? They really seemed to show up to play for the first time this year, but vanished midway through the third. Conditioning, youth, the stink of the last few seasons?
Jeff Gordon: 30 losses in 35 games makes coming to these games no fun at all. Once bad stuff happens, it seems to snowball on the group.
cosmos31: When the Rams lose to Detroit, will they get the first draft pick ? and will it be a QB ?
Jeff Gordon: I don't see a QB worthy of the first overall pick in this draft. But that could change.
William morris: The Detroit Lions just won their first game since December of 07. The rams and the lions took a similar approach in the offseason: Change Management, Coaching Staff etc. Besides the logo change the one change they made that we didnt was at QB. How bad will the decision of not drafting Sanchez be in the long run? Infact our last two drafts because Long looks unproductive.
Jeff Gordon: Long's unofficial stats: Three tackles and an assist, best among all the Rams defensive linemen today. He was at least visible.
Sanchez is doing enough with a good Jets team to make fans second guess passing on him. With Smith sidelined after 1 1/2 so-so games, it is hard not to second-guess the pick.
ramrage: I'm confused about this West Coast offense. Have they decided that it is impossible to stretch the field? Maybe my memory is faulty, but I recall no passes down the field for over 10-15 yards, not even attempts. Last year, Avery hauled in some nice over-the-shoulder catches for long yardage. Have we even attempted it? Has the offensive coordinator decided that our O-line just cannot be expected to hold off defenders for more than 2 seconds?
Jeff Gordon: There are some deep throws in this offense. And the Rams better try some, too, or they will never won a game.
ramrage: Is Ron Bartell really as good as he has been reported to be, or is he only effective if he has a safety to back him up? He got scorched at least twice today for long gainers, and I thought he was reported to be one of the better cover corners in the league. Was all this just hype, or did he just have an untypically-lousy day today only?
Jeff Gordon: Part of his trouble was playing hurt, part of it was Rodgers having too much time to throw, part of it was losing Butler at safety. All the Rams CBs had issues for the same reasons.
andrew: Who is this Dahl character playing FS? I didn't notice him until today, but he played fairly well.
Jeff Gordon: He starred in camp, then got hurt. He's healthy now -- and just in time, with Butler done. He was a good get by Devaney.
Josh: For a team that allowed Antwan Odom to rack up 5 sacks, you would think we could get something from Chris Long. Odom was lined up at the same position as Long too. The kid has got to show something soon.
Jeff Gordon: Long lined up in different spots, including a lot of DT in pass rush situations. Hall and Little were the primary pass-rushing DEs in this game.
Josh: Any news on the Robinson injury? I've heard that its pretty serious.
Jeff Gordon: Nothing definitive, but Spagnuolo was not optimistic after the game.
Roman_Gabriel_Rocks: Couldn't watch the game. What's the word on Marc, and how did Kyle look? Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: Marc could miss time with his shoulder injury. Boller had two nice jobs, using his mobility well, and then he reverted back to the Boller who played his way out of Baltimore.
mightymike105: Hi Jeff,
Just a few thoughts on todays game. The team played hard again but it's just so noticeble this teams overall lack of depth and talent. I hope Robinson is a fast healer because without him we really truly have the worst set of receivers in the league. Can anybody get open regularly? Donnie Avery has shown hardly anything again. He basically killed a drive with a drop when it was 23-17 and we were driving. Who knows how things would have turned out if we are 2nd and 5 instead of 2nd and 10. I was hoping for at least a FG there but we are just not good enough to overcome mistakes like that. What happened to McMichael's hands? I hope Butler is a fast healer to. We can't afford to lose him either. What would S. Jackson do on a better team? QB controversy? In all fairness Boller gave the team a big spark and he made some plays. Like Marc though he doesn't have much to work with but he can run which gives this bad offense a big boost. Is Marc done Jeff? Just a few thoughts. Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: McMichael is a huge disappointment. He was supposed to be a big factor in this offense. Is he done? It looks like it . . .
hakada1: Is it time to bring Marvin Harrison and his baggage into town?
Jeff Gordon: Uh, no. He didn't go to camp with anybody. He is not in football shape. There is a reason why he isn't in the league.
cosmos31: Hey, can I get some good deals on PSL's ?
Jeff Gordon: I'm guessing that you could.
Tim Tebow: With my concussion all better now, looks like I might be headin' to the gateway as the #1 pick, eh?
Jeff Gordon: As what, an H-Back?
Tone: With the injuries starting to pile up and the emergence of Boller coming in to play as the starting qb in your opinion where do the rams go from here? Personally I'm willing to sit out and accept a losing season under the new regime with Spags at the helm then the pervious with Linehan in control and with the rams now at 0-3 with the season still young do u see the rams making anymore moves in free angency or just standing pat and trying to ride it out? Thanks Gordo. -Tone
Jeff Gordon: Given the totality of their failure today, it's safe to saw the Rams will see some more change.
ramstill: 3 big keys to losing the game: -3 in turnover dept, our corners, wade and bartell can be scored upon, and last but not least , mcmichael's 3rd down drop that killed a critical drive in the 2nd half. Hope Spagnuolo can keep faith and hope with the players, and drive away charity.
Jeff Gordon: The secondary showed promise earlier this year, but Butler's injury doesn't help. And neither did Rodgers' throwing time on some of those big plays.
Rocky Bottom: I noticed the Bucs only had 80+ yards in the whole game today. How many ex-Rams are on that team? Did Lineham coaching there now?
Jeff Gordon: No, Scott is celebrating victory in Detroit today.
pdub: Gordo
What's the deal with Avery? I know he's dropped balls, fumbled last week, etc. but isn't he a field - stretching type receiver? He's a speed guy. But it doesn't look like they're using his speed at all. SO what is this guy's role then?
Quick take on Amendola?
Also, what can they do to get more pressure on the QB. Rodgers had a ridiculous amount of time to throw most of the time.
Hard to imagine where the wins will come from.
Jeff Gordon: Amendola gave the team a boost. If the Rams blocked on more of his returns, but he would have stacked up even more yardage. So that was a plus.
There are some wins left on the schedule. But if the injuries mount, then 0-16 becomes more possible.
Omaha Ramfan: Jeff,
How many years do you think it will be before we can win 8 games? 2 or 3 or even longer. I remember all of the bad LA Ram teams but at least those teams would win 4 or 5 games. I fully expect this team to win 2 or less games this year. With that being said do you think that we should draft a QB with our 1st round pick next year or wait until the later rounds. I cannot believe how bad we looked against a GB team that was beaten at home by the Bengals last week. It sucks to be a Rams fan.
Jeff Gordon: Any team can improve in one year and turn in two, if management and the coaching staff do their jobs. Injuries can slow progress, but, generally speaking, the NFL is set up to allow quick franchise turnarounds.
sabester24: Every week I see DeSean Jackson making big plays. Then I watch Donnie Avery dropping passes and fumbling. Frustrating.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson has had tough days, too, but at least he makes some huge plays. Donnie isn't doing anything within this offense. That must change or, again, this team will not win.
Fearsome: Gordo - once again this game was in reach, only to be let down by failed offense, dumb penalties, and general mistakes
When will this team EVER learn to play mistake-free?
Jeff Gordon: That is the focal point for Spags. He is trying to instill more discipline and better attention to detail, but it hasn't come yet.
ikkon211: Did Bollar show enough to earn a start next week whether Bulger can go are not?
Jeff Gordon: Good question. He flashed some positive things and really used his feet well. But he is nowhere near as accurate as Bulger is overall as a passer.
St. Lou Angeles of Cleveland: being a rams fan is something i'll do forever. It has created a closer bond with my god. Why? It has taught me the benefits of longsuffering. I am now offially on the 'draft a qb band wagon', but I see so many holes elsewhere, I'm sure I know exactly how Old Mother Hubbard felt. But I'm an optimist and I'm sure the rams are only 5 players away from the super bowl, its just that those 5 players would all have to be Hall-of-Famers. 2 questions: Was Larent Robinson being double teamed most of the time? and, as of today, what would you say the rams greatest 2 positions that need upgrading?
Jeff Gordon: No need to double up Robinson in this offense. Safeties are more focused on Jackson. And now Robinson is hurt, so this offense could really crumble.
ramfanoncapecod: Hey Jeff, Can you tellme why we are going man to man? Seems like we hold them . then give up the big play . Donald Driver is old and should not be beating us.
Jeff Gordon: Driver is still an excellent receiver. And Green Bay has multiple weapons, as we saw today. If Rodgers gets time to operate, he is hard to contract. He has a nice 126.9 passer rating today.
Soundwave_STL: JG
Was at the dome today... Good start for the defense in the 1st half then we self destruct in the 2nd half.
Same story different game. Oh and the Lions won.
I think Boller has my vote... He even threw a block!!
Soundwave_STL
Jeff Gordon: Heck of a block, too, one that fired up his team. That is something you won't see from Bulger. Spags did praise Kyle after the game for giving the team a lift.
Don Muenz: Hiya, Gordo.
The Rams now have this lawyer speechless.
don in columbus
Jeff Gordon: What, you can't even boo any more?
peter: At the beginning of the game... did the Rams want to play in front of their fans? Why so "Ho-hum"... Bulger just doesn't have the "IT" factor...get rid of him take the cap, cat, dog, tiger, ram, deer, budget, heath care, etc. "hit" and move on..."$65,000,000..wt"_"!!!
Jeff Gordon: Time is running out on Marc, for sure. The lift Boller provided was duly noted by the coachng.
Joe LaFrance: Being the RAMS as they are now, BAD, there has been only a few consistancies... Bulger at QB and Jackson and FB. Most everything else has changed, the coaches, the staff, ownership (for the most part) and even jerseys. How much longer is Marc "Eggshell" Bulger going to be around?
Jeff Gordon: Tick, tick, tick . . . the time is running out.
Vince Guldin: Yo There Gordo,
I'm in Philly, so (un?)fortunately I was uanble to watch the game. In your opinion, how did Boller do coming off of the bench? Boller has some mobilitiy; which should help the O-Line. I know he is not a long term answer, but he could make the team more competitive because of his legs and an arm that is stroner than Bulger's.
As for the next QB to draft; forget Bradford or Brennan... Jake Locker of Washington is a more complete QB package.
Jeff Gordon: Boller will do more with his legs than his arm, yes. I'm not sure he can make a huge difference, but at least he provided a spark.
Richard Wacker: I wanst able to see the game today but it seemed that Boller put a spark in the offense. I know he threw a pic in the comeback bid, but do you think it's now time to see what Boller can do and sit Bulger?
Jeff Gordon: Marc's injury could give Boller his second opportunity to prove he can succeed as a NFL QB. But he needs to sharpen up his accuracy to have that opportunity.
Josh: How can a professional team be so devoid of talent? I honestly can't comprehend it. We have maybe 4 or 5 guys that could start on other teams in the league (not including the special teams): Jackson, Atogwe, Witherspoon, Jason Brown, and maybe Lauranitis or Butler. How does this happen?
Jeff Gordon: There are more good players than that, but not enough, obviously. And they sure aren't coming together a group offensively.
SWMO Rams Fan: Gordo - Is it safe to assume that the Rams have a new starting QB now?
Jeff Gordon: Well, maybe. A sub-40.0 passer rating for the second half is no cause for celebration for the Boller camp
Tyler: Didn't see/hear much from OJ Atogwe today . I thought he would be a big factor today and with the Packers hitting long passes were they rolling coverage to one side with Atogwe? Was he up in run support? What did you see?
Jeff Gordon: Atogwe got back on one of the deep balls to make a great breakup. But run support is his strength. He doesn't always take the best angles in pass coverage.
Mike: Agree or disagree:
The jury is no longer out on the current regime at Rams park.
Devaney has had two horrible drafts, and two even worse years in free agency (hello Jacob Bell).
Steve Spagnulo is as unqualified to be an NFL head coach as Scott Linehan. He should use that omnipresent pencil behind his ear to loosen some ideas from his butt. His idiotic mantra regarding the four pillars doesn't hold much water when his team is universally ranked 32nd in the league.
Georgia Frontiere was the worst owner in NFL history. Her failure to be even remotely grounded in reality has directly led to the current sad state of affairs. Her son Chip is no better.
Jeff Gordon: Georgia won two NFC championships and one Super Bowl in St. Louis, so how is she the worst owner in NFL history?
justanotherjim: Sir, any word on L. Robinsons injury? If it is serious enough, the team should think seriously about picking up one the many seasoned recievers that are out there as free agents. It was proven today that the lack of experience played a major point intt he recieving corp not doing very well.
Jeff Gordon: I see the Rams picking up a receiver, of course, but I'd be surprised if the Rams went for a name guy. That has not been their M.O.
Rams8180: Well Robinson looks like he's not going to be playing anytime soon, and I dont know how bad Avery's injury was,but i'm not sure where are the Rams going to turn to to add more WRs. Do you think the Rams will be bringing back Curry or do they have somebody else in mind?
Jeff Gordon: Avery got the wind knocked out of him -- and perhaps his ribs hurt, too. Spags wasn't overly concerned about it after the game, but we'll see. Robinson's injury WILL force them to shop for WRs.
Jason: Now that we had injurys to a team thats already bad is there anyone out there that would be a good pickup? We need players
Jeff Gordon: There are plenty of guys out there. The earlier posted mentioned Curry, who had a strong preseason here. There would be worse options, but I see Devaney continued to comb other team's practice squads for players.
thirteen28: Jeff, is it illegal now for the Rams to attempt a long pass?
Jeff Gordon: It seems like it, no? If the Rams never stretch a D. the Rams will never win a game.
St. Lou Angeles of Cleveland: Listen, I know you have got to keep up relations with the rams staff, but you guys, the reporters are in the know. We dont want soft soap. Give us the straight dope. I think the 1st poster had a point. Chicago is happy with pace and tinoisamoa. Holt is Jacksonville's best receiver. Isaac Bruce has numbers better than any receiver the rams have and their qb is no marc bulger. And if nothing else Chris Draft was professional enough to teach the young backers while he sat on the bench. Come on Gordo, be gentle, but give us the straight dope...
Jeff Gordon: Fans martyr guys who lost 27 of 32 games. Why? To rebuild a roster, the high-priced must go and clear room for the next wave of talent. Pisa didn't come close to getting it done here. Holt lost interest. Pace was a mammoth injury risk in the twilight of career. It was time to turn the page.
Jason: And with the first pick in the NFL draft the St.Louis Rams Draft????
Jeff Gordon: This team has needs everywhere. An earlier poster asked to name the top two needs, but this team has holes everywhere.
Josh: Gordo,
To say our upcoming schedule is daunting is an understatement:
@ SF, Minn, @ Jax, Indy, @ Det (who look way better than the Rams)
I honestly cannot picture a scenario where we can win one of those games. Obviously our best chance is against the Lions, but do you think we can win one of these games? Going into the bye week 0-8 seems highly likely.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could win a couple of these games. Will they pull their heads out and actually do it? We'll see. They had a chance to win this game, down six with the ball. But mistakes and timid play calling doomed them.
Richard Wacker: @#$%^&* ^&*()%$$ !@#$%^%$ ^&*()(* &*(())...
That's the only way I'll be able to say what I wanna say without getting banned by STLTODAY...
Will we even beat DETROIT.... Not the way we play... How stupid are some of these guys making the SAME mistakes week in and week out...?
!@#$ these sorry !@#$%^&*()*!
Jeff Gordon: I can't imagine what fans were saying as they witnessed this thing at the Ed. I hope kids weren't listening.
SWMO Rams Fan: Gordo, in response to an earlier question you stated "Jackson ran for 117 yards behind the line that you criticized. That means he had a fabulous game under tough circumstances." May I suggest that SJ hadn't done much of anything until Boller came in and opened things up for the offense. The defense had to adjust to Boller's mobility and ability to move the team and that meant they couldn't key on SJ as much. It's not ALL about the OL dude.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson was outstanding, period. He hit the few holes that were there and he broke some playing by getting outside of traffic. Back-to-back 100-yard games in this offense is offense, given the utter lack of a deep passing game.
Beyond Seething: These stupid goats continue to stink it up week after week. At least Bulger got taken out. Boller is better, but not good enough. What does that say about this overpaid loser Bulger? This team is HORRENDOUS at best.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, Bulger was overpaid. He was a winner when the team was better, don't forget. He isn't good enough to made a bad team better, that is clear.
NewGovt/NewAmerica: What happened today, how did we (the Rams) lose steam?
Jeff Gordon: They quit moving the ball and they resumed allowing Green Bay to make huge passing plays. That combination did them in.
Edward: Do you think Kyle Boller be the starter next week?
Jeff Gordon: Given Bulger's injury, yes. Even if Marc is able to throw, the team could decide to protect him.
peter: The Rams need to come back to LA...St. Louis just ain't cuttin it!! The Rams will never win in St. Louis again with this new breed of players.. Please come "home"!!
Jeff Gordon: And play where?
whosaidthat: Everyone is talking about which QB we should draft next year after praising Null in preseason-any chance we see what he's got before we anoint a new messiah?
Jeff Gordon: I would imagine we'll see him play at some point. When Boller threw that block today, he almost got his chance right there. Kyle could have hurt himself big time.
jerseyram: like i said last week bulger looks fragile i know hes a gamer and tough(with all the hits he taken over the years you have to be)but his body cant hold up. and i believe ur qb has to have the ability to move around in the pocket. but for all the bulger haters you cant blame him with wr group we have out there!!! devaney gets some room to rebuild this roster but with d.jackson scoring again!! and d.avery not playing wats that my wife just said he did suit up!!! he cant blow draft picks like this im still in avery corner but hes not looking good and devaney cant have any mistakes like this he goes consertive with the 1st pick and takes a wild gamble in the 2nd round
Jeff Gordon: Devaney had a lot more control over this draft than the previous one. In the current configuration, football men make decisions. The coach is still key to the process, but Devaney does have more clout than the year before.
Andy from Chicago: I'm in Chicago and couldn't see the game but did keep track on-line. obviously you were there and you seem very discouraged. We scored points, no? Was it really a trainwreck?
Jeff Gordon: There were 15 minutes or so of encouraging football, but the other 45 minutes was disastrous. The same old sloppiness we saw the last two years.
pdub: Gordo
Your first take on Amendola? And what is the deal w/ Avery in your opinion? They certainly aren't using his speed..but then he certainly isn't showing much anyway.
Hard to imagine what team would present the Rmas with a winable game..
Jeff Gordon: Avery has wheels. The Rams need to call some plays where he can use those wheels. We know his hands aren't his best feature.
Randy: Didnt hear to much about James Laurenaitis today what were your thoughts on how he performed?
Jeff Gordon: Unofficially, he had three tackles. When the Packers did their biggest damage, they went way downfield with the ball. The Rams D did have some nice run stops along the way, until they wore down at the end.
Mike: You call Boller "dreadful", yet he put 17 points on the board.
You staunchly defend Bulger, yet the offense has produced only 7 points under his leadership in 9 quarters.
Explain.
Jeff Gordon: Kyle had two great drives with two great throws to Fells. And then he was dreadful. If he wants to make the most of this opportunity to play, then he needs to show more than he did in the second half.
jerseyram: do we have any lbs out there number 51 he so lost i cant even rember his name d-line played well i think secodary seemed to take a hit with butler gone stayed away from oj all day bartell forget about this game any word on butler ?
Jeff Gordon: Again, Butler's injury looks bad. Dahl did pretty well in his place. The LBs could all play better. They had some great sequences and some terrible ones.
Robert Gonzales: hey Jeff,
Well another unwatchable game were we just can't play catch up against any good teams, is the same sad story with this team bad turnovers, penalties, etc. I'm still not sold on spagnuolo he's not letting the team quit but he's not doing anything to change this loosing culture of this team. Yes is only three games but this team just keep's getting worst every game!! We don't have any good wide receivers, nor a great quarterback who can sling it, nor any good players on defense. Hey Devaney I know your team plays hard but you still need to draft the right players!!!! this was not a good draft year by you and spagnuolo there no talent to show for! Instead of Venting on Mark Schelerth from ESPN think about what you need to as a General Manager to get this team more competitive!!!
Jeff Gordon: Well, yes, if you want to show Mark Schlereth that he is wrong, that was NOT the way to do it. The Rams had problems all over the place, again. They were better than in Week 1 and, offensively, they progressed from Week 2. But they still lost going away.
Sonny: Whats your opinion of Donnie Avery? Do you think he's being used improperly or is he not as good as the Rams thought he would be? Thanks
Jeff Gordon: Both. The Rams need to use his speed because he isn't a great route runner with sticky fingers. Trying to wedge short passes to him in heavy traffic will not yield good results.
Ozy Rams Fan: Gordo,
If we go 0-16 this year dont we set the record for most losses in a row, tying 77 Buc's
That is something to look forward too.
OZY
Jeff Gordon: For a stretch, the Rams actually looked decent in this game. But for much of the game, they did look like a 0-16 team.
onemoreramfan: Where was the pass rush? All the long passes were a result of no pressure on Rogers.
SJ ran well, but... It appears he gets stopped always at a crutial moment in the game. Have you or anyone else noted this?
Jeff Gordon: Jackson gets stopped at critical points because teams are looking for him. To change that, the Rams need to develop a passing game this season.
Lawarence Marmie: Sad, but Scott Linehan is celebrating a win today and we're still searching for the first one since early last year.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, life is good in Scottsville today. Stafford helped him win a game.
S-Jax's Agent: I know taking talent off this team is not going to help the cause, but should we not give Steven Jackson a chance on a decent team while getting compensated with picks? Jackson is a beast of a back who could hopefully fetch us a first rounder plus. It is painful to watch such a specimen play on such a bad team. I do not see the point of keeping him to win 2 games, you might as well get something for him while he is running well and hopefully win 1 game this season. Then rebuild through the draft, although that hasn't had a high success rate here. Anyways two first rounders and 1 win sounds better than one first rounder and two wins. Thoughts? Possible destinations?
Jeff Gordon: If I'm running this team, I don't trade away a player capable of leading a turnaround. Jackson is the only current Rams with that sort of transformational ability. If this team wants to turn around in Year 2, trading this guy won't make that happen.
Jake: Why have we yet to see the rams throw a single long ball to avery?
and what is up with the victor A. situation? did he piss someone off
Jeff Gordon: The Rams lost 27 of 32 games coming into this season. Victor had a piece of that. The Rams maximized the number of pass rushers in their starting lineup and that is not what Victor does well.
27midwest1: Hey Jeff, why do people seem to have no patience with this situation... I mean, people get on these boards and do nothing but blast the team but for some reason, people don't understand that this team is in BAD, BAD, BAD shape and has been for some time and it is in recovery. We have had bad drafts for the last 8-10 years and most of the people that this organization has drafted is either not on this team or out of the league and that's sad considering those are the people that would normally be the core veterans of your team, and future of the team....
Jeff Gordon: There is no magic wand, true. But this team needs to take stands THIS YEAR to prove the program is going somewhere. This would have been an ideal time to do that.
Lawarence Marmie: Well Gordo,
The day was not an entire disappointment- the Yankees just finshed a three game sweep of the Red Sox to take (the toughest division in baseball) the American League East!!!
Jeff Gordon: So at least you're happy. Not much of that going around here.
pdub: At this point..I think Boller is an upgrade over Bulger... not that he's better passer but at least he can move around and make something out of nothing at times. Bulger just can't do that.
What do you make of McMichael's first few games? He's doesn't seem to be much of a focal point of that offense, like the coaches said he'd be.
Jeff Gordon: If McMichael could get open and catch the ball when it is thrown to him, that would help. What a disappointment!
Joe LaFrance: My wife really doesn't watch football but even she knows when the RAMS need s QB. Bulger has been way to soft in my opinion. You may have excuses, like line a worth a plug nickel or too many sacks and so forth. BUT I do believe Ben Rothlesburger has been sacked many times more than Bulger yet plays every week. Back n the day, we'd call someone like Bulger a pansie-@$$, momma's boy or just a plain ol' sissy.
Jeff Gordon: This guy has played with a LOT of injuries and suffered great pain doing so. So, no, he isn't a sissy.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Boller finished badly? How about the play calling? Down two scores and you don't go to a hurry up offense?
It seemed that the offense came alive with Boller then Schumer did his best to squash any chance at a win with his head scratching play calling, almost like he had a bet on the game and he took the Packers and laid the points.
Oh well meet the new boss, same as the old boss
Jeff Gordon: Yes, the Rams need to open up if this offense regardless of the QB. Right now you can defend the Rams with nine or 10 guys.
B Wilson: Brutal game, Hey,I thought the Rams were supposed to wair throwbacks today?
What gives?
Jeff Gordon: No throwbacks, just the same old garbage . . .
Kevlar: Looks like the only area we did improve on this year from last is at linebacker. I know Fletcher has played some and Smith is out with the knee but there doesn't appear to be much help coming from anywhere else. I know rebuilding is tough but do you see a silver lining anywhere?
Jeff Gordon: In today's game, no. Amendola was OK in the return game, but that is a small deal in the big scheme of things.
peter: Boller did fine... give him a whole week with the ones and all the reps... and I think he will do way better than Bulger..who has no footwork what so ever..How in the world could the Rams pay Bulger $65,000,000 how..does not make any "sense"??!!
Jeff Gordon: That is outrageous money, yes. After this year, the Rams are done with the guaranteed money in that contract. That changes everything.
Ozy Rams Fan: Gordo,
There seems a dramtic downward spiral, ever sence they released Draft days before the season started. That event seemed to have a negitive effect on the team.
What's ur take on that ?
Ozy
Jeff Gordon: That is something the team didn't have to do, over less than $400,000. At 0-3, this team needs more leader types, not fewer.
Edward: I just love watching Steven Jackson and beleive he has the potential to be the top back in the league since he can catch, and run with his physical style but has the ability for the homerun with his speed for a big back I think St.Louis needs to let Alex Barron walk ,cut Jacob Bell and move Jason to the left side and bring in some new guys that can RUN BLOCK some big guys with nasty demeanors and of course grow on defense through the draft like a Taylor Mays, and a Corey Wooton but overall St.louis empresed me I mean they can only do so much with talent they have I believe they will be a very good team in about 2 years what is your take ?
Jeff Gordon: If Jackson is here and if Devaney hits on both the draft and free agency after this year, then, yes, that could happen.
jerseyram: do you thinks spags can keep this together and not look lost in what hes doing i know were gonna loss more than we win but the players have to feel like we can win on any sunday. being that shurmur is from philly i thought we would see more screens plays is that not part of his system and are the wr eqiupt for the west coast does avery need more vertical routes do you know if he gets off the line okay ?
Jeff Gordon: He can get off the line. And, yes, the Rams need to go downfield more often. That or cut him lose, because is NOT a possession receiver. He can't run those routes.
Phil W.: Thanks for the session, Gordo.
1. A weak O-line to match up against, still no pressure. I am turning on Chris Long. How much time do you give a number two draft pick before they start producing!? People criticized him as a "safe" pick, that his upside was like a Grant Wistrom-type player, I don't even see that.
2. Avery looks like a WR3 to me ever since teams started respecting him with top corners. You want your WR1 to be able to make the big plays despite good coverage, and I just don;t see that in Avery's skill set. Disagree?
PW
Jeff Gordon: Avery hasn't earned respect as a legit No. 1 or No. 2, to this point. With Robinson out, this would be a real good time to get more out of him.
ersatz: Null = empty.
Keith Null = team mascot. Put him in there. Could be fun.
Jeff Gordon: The kid has some pro potential. But he is a ways off from making a difference. Too bad NFL Europe isn't around.
Lawarence Marmie: I hope Aaron Rodgers sent Ken Flajole a bouquet of flowers after the game today. He probably hasn't been treated that nice since stepping foot onto an NFL field.
Jeff Gordon: Aaron should thank the Rams who let him out of the pocket play after play, then couldn't catch up to him.
baddmann28: Seriously, I feel this team competed today. After the shape the previous regime left this team in, that's all we can ask. They did look better than the first two weeks. This is a young team that needs to gain experience. They are getting just that. They have to fail before they can succeed. It's going to get uglier before it gets better. But it will get better. We have some very raw young talent that is making mistakes right now. Only playing time and game film will make them better.
I trust Spags and Devaney. Seems the PD writers don't?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have been terrible this season. They make the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over again. Until that changes, what makes this team different from the last two.
Edward: Ive watched a lot of Taylor Mays and truly beleive the Rams will have the oppurtunity to select him in the 2010 Nfl Draft I know its early but do you think Taylor would be a good fit to continue and grow in this young Spagnuolo Defense?
Jeff Gordon: Assuming Atogwe locks in for the long haul, safety may be the one place the Rams don't need help.
zhorwitz: It seems like the offensive philosophy is "lets just try a bunch of different stuff and pray"...what are they trying to achieve?
Jeff Gordon: It's more like, let's try all the same conservative stuff and hope for the best.
Lawarence Marmie: Is there anyway the NFL will grant us an out of league game? Maybe if we play Haslett's UFL team, we will have a chance to win a game...maybe...
Jeff Gordon: It would be a nice reunion, at least.
darl: I really thought the Rams would win this one. What a let down. I want to believe in Spagnolo, but, after this game, I'm having my doubts, especially after seeing Detroit beat the team who whooped us last week. I know it's too early to give up on Spags, but can you see anything behind the scenes that might give ram fans some hope--for next year, at least? And do you think we'll win a game this year? It doesn't look very promising. Give me some hope, Gordo!
Jeff Gordon: Spags is trying hard. He is sticking to his plan. But it would be nice to see some actual progress.
Philj: I dont understand what it is about Ritchie Incognito that the Rams coaches like
The guy gets beat like a drum regularly,so does Barron, but then again so do the rest of the o-lineman
Anyway,my question is,who makes the Rams draft picks, who has final say on who they pick up in Free Agency?
Can they get Armey back?
Jeff Gordon: After last season, Devaney got that authority. He works with the coach, but he makes the call.
Sydney_03: Why won't the Rams even try to throw a ball over the middle of the field for say 20 or 30 yards to stretch the defense? Why won't the Rams try to throw a bomb just to shake things up? I realize the Rams are lacking talent on offense; however, we have been watching this same dreadful offense now for 3 to 4 years. This team has proven they can't run block consistently; however, they refuse to take any risk passing the ball over the middle. At some point, haven't the Rams braintrust figured out the playing this conservative and scared to lose style of football is one of the reasons they are losing. I think a novel idea would be to make attempts to stretch the defense so they consider defending the entire field. When a team plays the Rams, the defense knows that most plays will be very cautious and all that is really needed is to cover the sidelines and about a ten yard zone over the middle. I don't care if the Rams lose if they are making an honest effort to play offense. This team is about as exciting to watch as paint drying on a wall. At some point, they really need to try to play real offense - even with limited talent. After all, what do they have to lose. They are not going to win any games playing their current style. Playing not to lose is always a sure way to lose. I figured the new regime would bring a more exciting offense in; however, it looks just like the old offense for the most part.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, it looks worse than the old offense.
COGzilla: just a mess,my man.looks like the early days when they first got here even though they actually won a few that first year.
oline looked better today and i do see a little more desire out there for the most part.
be honest,jeff...when do you think we will compete again.seriously.
Jeff Gordon: There is no excuse not to compete this year. They were right there at Washington last week and messed up in the red zone. They got within a TD/XP in this game and had the momentum. They just didn't run with it. It's like expect to lose.
RAMFAN501: DOES SPAG REGRET LETTING HOLT GO HE WOULD BE BETTER THAN WHAT WE GOT. GOING TO BE LONG YEAR. WHATS YOUR OVER ON WINS NOW
Jeff Gordon: No regrets at all. Anybody looking at the '08 game film can see why Torry was turned out. He needed a fresh start and he got it.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
How did they come to the conclusion of a bruised shoulder on Bulger and why didn't they take him in for precautionary xrays to rule out a break, seperation or something else?
Jeff Gordon: The trainers tested him. Since he wasn't going back in the game, there was no need to do anything more. Like other injured guys, he'll undergo further examination by the doctors.
peter: Gordo I think you are "wrong"... Boller should have gotten more help from the Off. Cood. play calling and players who "dropped" balls.
Jeff Gordon: True, but Bulger should have got more help from the off. coordinators and players who dropped. Welcome to the Rams!
Curt: Do you think the Rams could compete in the OVC?
Jeff Gordon: Sure. And the Big Ten, too, from the looks of things.
Scott Linehan: Hey Gordo- what's up? What's that? I'm sorry, I can't hear you with the sound of all those champagne corks popping in the background here... How are things going there?
Jeff Gordon: Good one!
peter: Gordo...what did Coach Spags say in the post game press conference?
Jeff Gordon: He walked through the injuries, praised Boller for giving the team a lift, bemoaned the offensive turnovers and big plays against his D . . . he downplayed the mental mistakes but admitted there were plenty of physical ones.
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Are you sticking with your 5 wins cause I look at this team and the schedule and I don't see a game where you can point to and say oh yeah there's a W
Jeff Gordon: I believed they would break through this game. They didn't. And with the injuries, the official over-under shrinks to four.
randy: I know WR Matt Jones doesnt fit the four pillars but this guy looks like a changed man and he has a lot of talent at 6-6 230 pound WR running a 4.4 my question for you is now that Laurent Robinson is hurt do you think the rams take a gamble on him cause I think its worth it or go back and call Ronald Curry or hopefully a Marvin Harrison what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: Look at the other players Devaney has added and expect more of the same. In a year or two they might seek veteran help, but for now it's all about the upside.
peter: It's official...Rams hold the record for the longest "losing" streak in the league... Thank You
Jeff Gordon: On behalf of the Rams, we say "you're welcome."
Miss Ames: okay seriously why is everyone giving Boller this praise blah blah blah, everyone is putting their eggs in one basket when it comes to him. So what who cares he scored two td's and did a few things. Hello we still freakin' lost by 21 points and we're 0-3. Boller looked like crap the second half playing like he did w/ the Ravens. Unreal!!
If we had won then maybe I can see it but no. There's more than a qb issues w/ this team looking at the first three weeks of the season. But as usual let's put the blame on someone who only played a series and half.
If Bulger can't go against the 49ers,Boller goes and the way the 49ers lost today you can bet they will not be in a good mood. Let's see what Boller does against them before saying anyting.
Yes i'm annoyed Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: I tend to agree. Boller has to show more. Two drives were great, but the quick exits on other drives were not helpful.
Rich Owens: Hey, just wanted to let you know that I'm still available.
Jeff Gordon: Another good one!
Rich Sielaff: It is another week and another loss.As usual the second pick in the draft
was not on the field and last years second overall pick (Chris Long) had
no impact at all. Billy D. should be held accountable. Matt Ryan or Mark
Sanchez would give this team some hope!
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue against Ryan and Sanchez, but Long WAS busier today. Not great, but busier.
eternalramnation: Really liked the wildcat formation with the direct snap to Jackson. Were you surprised that the Packers packed the box when we went to it and dared Jackson to throw the ball?
Our offense has all the imagination of a mighty mite pop warner team.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that.
Rambitious: Hi
Are the Rams the worst team in the last five years in the NFL?
Jeff Gordon: No, Matt Millen Lions won that honor. But the Rams are getting there.
Cousin Vinny: I think Boller did a decent job coming in when he did. He threw 2 td's and gave it his all considering he was a 2nd stringer. I know you and ever other sportswriter is for bulger, you have to admit it was great to see the rams come alive like they did.(the defense did suck today - do you agree? maybe it wasn't all bollers fault!)
I say give the ball to Boller and see what he can do. Lets face it, bulgers done.
Jeff Gordon: I'm just being realistic. Boller gave the team a HUGE lift. His feet make a large difference. He has some energy, too. But he isn't much of a passer.
peter: Quote:Packers coach Mike McCarthy: "Coming down here to St. Louis, I was very impressed with our fan support here today." Rams should leave St. Louis and return to LA!!
Jeff Gordon: And play where?
Rams lamb in Southlake Texas: One has to wonder how does a team fall so low. Did we sell our sold to the devil? Was it complete uncaring management? Does horrible drafting of complete failures ruin a professional team? Does overplaying a quarterback who despite your excellent defense has taken the money and produce nothing kill the team? How coaches can you hire? How many front office people can be hired. Has someone cursed our team? Did Chicago cubs fans sneak into town and mix some of that goat bad luck into our stew? Why has this horrible fate befallen us?
Jeff Gordon: Mismanagement, mostly. And some bad luck. But you make your own breaks in this game and the previous Rams regime simply failed.
Jim Hart: Rams fan: "Hey, accuracy is over-rated. I think we need to stick with this quarterback who can buy time with his legs and chuck it downfield."
Raiders fan: "Eh, not so much."
If it were my call I would start Null from here on out just to spite the other two. It's not like any one of the three is a complete NFL quarterback at this point. At least Null might grow into a serviceable backup.
Jeff Gordon: Wow . . . we've skipped right past Boller and gone to Null. Next thing you know, a fan will write in to martyr Brock Berlin.
studebaker: What is the rule regarding a players forward progress? On the Jackson fumble it appeared to me a classic example of why the rule is on the books. I can understand why the Rams don't get the "A" team when it comes to oficials but are we dommed to have the "C" team?
P.S. the Ref marking the sideline has a good view of the Packers mauling Robinson while he was out of bounds flat on his back
Jeff Gordon: I thought that too, on first look. but on one of the replay angles it appeared he ball popped lose on the original hit and Steve was trying to gather it back when the crowd arrived.
Scott: Why is it that the D can stiffen up in the red zone but every time Donnie Jones drops a punt inside the five they let the opponent out every time, particularly today when the team had a little momentum?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, just one more thing that drove everybody nuts in this game.
justanotherjim: this is really scary: Linehan has more wins that shumar does!
Jeff Gordon: Scott! Scott! Scott!
Adam: It looks like the Rams are heading towards another top 5 pick,if not the 1st pick overall. Please tell me that if this happens that they won't spend it on a Tackle!!! The Rams are lacking players at Qb and Wr. I think if they would pick one of those 2 positions it would at least re-energize the fans.
Jeff Gordon: Wouldn't that be fabulous -- drafting another tackle? Or maybe another 3-4 defensive end. Perfect!
12strikes: This team is going nowhere, let's give Null a shot.
Jeff Gordon: At least the headline writers would have fun after losses . . .
eternalramnation: Gordo,
Why are you so down on Boller? You keep harping on his second half numbers as if Bulger is a HOFer and would have done better.
Sugar coat it all you want but the offense takes on the personality of it's QB and when Bulger is in there we have the same lethargic don't give a rip look as he does.
Jeff Gordon: Again, just trying to be realistic. Boller was fabulous for two drives. And then he went back to being Kyle Boller. I don't mind starting ahead of Bulger, given his mobility, but I do wonder if he can sustain any success within this scheme. This offense (such as it is) require accurate passes into tight spaces. Boller would be better in an offense that allowed him to use his feet and heave more balls downfield.
jim66: Chris Long,#1 draft pick that cannot start for this defense is surely not a good sign.Is he simply not a fit for this defense? Is he not physically capable of playing against NFL caliber lineman? At this rate, he'll be just another disappointment and wasted dollars.
How does Avery have 3 catches for 12 yards? Isn't he fast, elusive and all those things. Or is he clueless?
How do you pass on a franchise qb and draft a right tackle?
Jeff Gordon: Avery is fast and elusive. He has to run deeper routes to help this offense and he has to catch the ball.
Long was more notable today, albeit not as a real impact guy.
Before drafting a "franchise quarterback," it's best to build a line and a better D to give the kid a chance to succeed, as Ryan and Sanchez have. Put either of those guys here and they might have suffered career-endangering growing pain.
carroll rosenbloom: Thanks for your time gordo. So how come nothing's new on the sales front since the summer?I thought dave checketts was interested.Doesn't anyone want this team? What gives?
Jeff Gordon: If you spend any time around the Blues, you don't get the feeling that the franchise is flush with cash. Checketts is interested in the Rams, but NFL expects its owners to have some real money.
BakoCAramFan: The thing about Jackson is that he is supposed to be a MACHO back, wearing down defenses...
It won't happen unless he actually HITS them!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Did you watch the game? The guy got a 163 yards in an offense that does NOT provide consistent run blocking. Maybe Peterson could have gotten that many yards on his own today, but not many other NFL backs could have done that.
ric499: You can't complain about Boller having a 75 passer rating coming off the bench cold and not say something about Bulger having a 69.5 rating as the starter. 5 points better cold and 2 TDs. Time for Mr. Bulger to take a seat.
Jeff Gordon: I'm not saying Bulger has played great. I'm just trying to calm the Boller hype.
Mike: Gordo:
Here's how Frontiere was not just the worst owner in NFL History, but the worst in the history of professional sports:
From Sports Illustrated 12/23/1991 written by Steve Wulf:
One can't help but admire the principles of Los Angeles Ram head coach John Robinson. Even though the Rams are now 3-13 and his job is in obvious jeopardy, Robinson has refused the request of team owner Georgia Frontiere to put "magic crystals" around the necks of his players.
Clearly, she was as grounded in reality as those who believe she was a competent owner.
Jeff Gordon: She was goofy, true. But I remember the parade.
Misterbluesky: Two things I never want to see again...Jackson taking the snap deep in Ram territory and the "Shovel Pass". Knucklehead players are now being handicapped by knuckleheaded coaching. What the hell is going on here????
Jeff Gordon: The shovel pass works better when the team running it actually blocks.
Scott Linehan: Yo Gordo,
I can't wait until the Rams come to Detroit in November. Watching Ken Flajole call a defense, I really have a chance to improve this offense's overall standing by 3 or 4 spots after that game. Matt Stafford is going to feel like he's back in training camp wearing a red jersey with as many blitzes as Flajole calls. I can't wait- hope to see you there!!!
Jeff Gordon: Scott, get back to your champagne.
jim66: so devaney drafted a wr with bad hands, and a defensive end who's not really all that defensive. is it possible to draft NFL ready players in the first 2 rounds?
Jeff Gordon: Sure. Ask James Laurinaitis.
stlfan5: Any chance the Rams will now let Boller be our starting QB and try and trade Bulger for some high draft picks?
Jeff Gordon: Who would trade for Bulger?
Scott: If Avery has such great speed and cant catch would he be worth a look as a d.b.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, that's what good college programs do. But I saw enough from Donnie last year to believe he can make plays. Maybe not in this offense.
carroll rosenbloom: Gordo what are the advantages of taking a franchise qb with our putrid o-line vs mabye taking taylor mays the shutdown safety from usc? You figure with us picking 1st we better get it right,no?I mean honestly why put a kid like colt mccoy behind that sive of a o-line?Didn't usc also produce shutdown safety's like troy palamalu and ronnie lott?
Jeff Gordon: Before Butler got hurt, safety was the team's one solid position. Anything but a safety!
carroll rosenbloom: Jeff sir could you please tell me what ever happened to my team since i last owned it 30 years ago? What has my widow and 2nd son done to this franchise?Jay Zygmunt and John Shaw should be barbacued for this monstrosity!
Jeff Gordon: Well, they moved on from their jobs. Not a BBQing, but they did get moved aside.
eddog: can you please tell me why in the world the rams would pass up on sanchez this past draft. next year qb's are not as good has him. another bad move on the rams by passing up players that can help team right away p.s. they also pass up on jay coulter. good luck finding a qb next year.
Jeff Gordon: Cutler has some Cade McNown in him. He better lose that or it will hurt his career.
I'm not a big fan of putting a good college QB in a really bad team situation. Too much potential for disaster.
vrams: If Boller was average today, what has Bulger been? Any chance we see Null by week 8?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe sooner!
Jim Hart: Eh Gordo, you missed my point. I wasn't advocating Null, per se. I was equating Kyle Boller to Jamarcus Russell. Both are physical, mobile quarterbacks with an accuracy level that gets you moved to receiver in most good high school programs. In fact, Russell is probably a better all around qb because he at least has the huge downfield arm. Seriously, would you want Russell as your quarterback? If not, then why would any Rams fan be advocating Boller?
Jeff Gordon: I get it. Boller is a tough fit for an underneath passing scheme where everything gets wedged in. If he takes over, the offense needs to evolve to play to his strengths. Null throws a nice ball, but he looked a bit overwhelmed in his last preseason appearance. I would definitely want to see him play at some point if this is going to lose every game.
