marvin slay: Mr. Gordon,
How did Mr. Irrelvant do today for team irrelevant?
Marvin Slay
Jeff Gordon: Jim Haslett saw some missed assignments, but he felt that Vobora did pretty good for a rookie (and seventh-round pick) making his first NFL start.
Tackleberry: Why are the Rams so ineffective in the redzone? It is almost like there is an invisible wall that won't allow them to score. Is it the absence of McMichael? Is it the absence of a true fullback?
Jeff Gordon: Haslett has no answer to this mystery. Obviously, if Jackson can play a full game, that would help. He should be the finisher. In this game, the Rams did OK with the rush blocking, too.
God bless him, Al Saunders tried to work his tight ends in this game. But there is no Randy McMichael out there.
Tackleberry: As the Rams are being carved up by Pennington/Ginn Jr/London is the need for a legit #1 VETERAN cornerback and younger more effective safety becoming more glaring?
Jeff Gordon: The team needs everything on D, really. Every position is a need position.
Tackleberry: Are the Rams the only team in the NFL that don't use a lead back on short yardage running situations? Does the ghost of Martz still haunt the dome on 3rd & short?
Jeff Gordon: Sadly, there is no lead back on the roster. Where is Madison Hedgecock when you need him?
boleil: Well, see you next wee...wait a minute. It's halftime and we're still in the game? Can this be?
Does Stephen Jackson really make this much of a difference? I suspect a second half chokejob is imminent. At least for 1 half, it looks like a football team showed up to play today. Now if only Bulger could remember that he used to know how to play the game...
Jeff Gordon: Had Jackson had the durability to keep up his attack, the second half might have played out differently.
denna: really poor play calling in the red zone. plus bulgetr is way off on touch passes this year.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that. When Marc doesn't see what he likes in the red zone, he just throws it away. And given his three INTs elsewhere on the field, maybe that's a good thing.
Grimmsta: Get to the red zone and can't punch it in......
We'd be the highest scoring team IF this was the NBA!!!
We keep getting to the red zone and get nothing from the offense. THEN when we DO have a chance to turn games around or at least be competitive, THE BLINDEST, DUMBEST, quarterback in the LEAGUE GIVES the damn BALL AWAY, EVERYTIME... It NEVER fails..please give HIM away...
Jeff Gordon: Bulger hasn't been good enough, for sure, but a lot goes wrong for this team when it gets in tight. It's not not guys are springing open left and right.
mullaniac: JG, Can DeVaney and Haslett sculpt this team into a winner? Today it looks like they are playing together and the young guys look good.
Rams Jersey
Jeff Gordon: I like Devaney and Haslett both, but I haven't seen enough. I believe this organization needs strong new leadership at the top. Whatever happens after that happens - but change at the top is needed.
Lawarence Marmie: Brett Romberg said that he was happy to be back, praised the job that Nick Leckey did, and wanted to pick up exactly where Lecky left off. I have two questions:
1.) Is he serious?
2.) Is he serious?
Jeff Gordon: Come on, Nick did OK, for what he has to offer. He needs to be better on his snaps, but he pretty much reached his potential out there. How many other Rams did that?
BakoCAramFan: As the clock winds down on this close loss, two things are obvious:
1) Marc Bulger is a loser;
2) The Rams offense is the worst in the NFL.
Even if we were healthy all year at all positions, best we can do is 6-10.
Question: Could you have called any play to change this game's outcome? I would've gone for it, fourth and short, late in the fourth quarter...
Jeff Gordon: Great questions -- what would the Rams have done by staying healthy at every position all year? Was 6-10 really the best-case scenario? Or might this team have gained some momentum?
We can only speculate, but I think a 100 percent team, start to finish, at least breaks even this year. The NFC West has been that bad.
wtf?: Bulger = no chance of winning a game. He can't blame it on the unrelenting pressure of the defense. The offensive line actually did a decent job of pass protecting. This one's all on Bulger and some sloppy tackling.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue. Miami made some nice reads and INTs do happen, but when you don't throw TD passes, then you can't throw so many picks. Marc played losing football.
Lawarence Marmie: Do we have any plays on 3rd down that actually go past the marker for the first down? If not, maybe Al Saunders should come up with some.
Jeff Gordon: Keep working the ball to Joe Klopfenstein and good things will happen.
steve in kentucky: marc bulger singlehandedly lost the game for the rams today.
Worst case scenario, berlin comes in and throws INTs.
why is bulger still playing?
Jeff Gordon: The Dolphins really sat on the Rams WRs, so this was a tough game for Marc. He had to throw to his tight ends, which can be problematic for this team.
Scott Linehan: HA, HA, HA,HEE, HEE, HO, HO!! (In the usual robotic tone) You can't blame this one on me! You don't have me to kick around anymore. Blame that waste of a jersey Bulger..
Jeff Gordon: This is Linehan's team, built to his specifications. So these losses stick to his permanent record.
Artist formerly known as cogzill: 2 minutes left.team played hard today.oline played well and defense was respectable. bulger stunk. with all of that said...any whispers on if devaney has his guy waiting in the bushes to be the coach? they say he is well connected and respected. they did compete today....but shouldnt they do that every week?thank you, kind sir
Jeff Gordon: If the owners decide to change coaches, Billy will have a vote -- but (gump) John Shaw's influence could be much greater.
Vegas Jay: Jeff:
Don't know about you, but I think Tony Banks would be a significant upgrade at QB right about now. The Rams will NEVER be a winning franchise as long as "Mr. Happy Feet" Bulger runs their offense (into the ground, as in crash and burn).
Jeff Gordon: Miami didn't pressure him much, but they didn't give up anything in coverage. The Dolphins took away Avery at all cost. It was nice to see Bulger and Holt reconnect.
Lawarence Marmie: Great decision for Haslett to punt the ball away with 5 minutes left and the Rams needing a yard for a first down. Playing it safe when your team is 2-9 (now 2-10)is just good football. That's why great coaches are great coaches and why Jim Haslett will be collecting unemployment checks next season.
Jeff Gordon: Well, the Rams got another chance . . . and once again failed to advance the ball. Haslett figured with the timeouts he would get another chance and he did. The offense could have had 100 possessions today and not scored a TD.
Brent King: Bulger had plenty of time to throw the ball today and he still looked terrible, in fact I think this may have been his worst game yet. Gordo- do you think the Rams have to rent a QB for next year and then draft one in the 2nd or 3rd round to start grooming ASAP?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams at least need to bring in somebody capable of competing for the starting job. Also, drafting a QB would be wise as well.
barlitone: Will you, or ANYONE, tell me why we don't just get the ball in field goal range and just kick one? Sure, we're bound to miss a few, but I'm willing to bet we'd win more games if we just scored a lot of field goals (without wasting time trying to move the football into the red zone, which almost never amounts to anything) than we will by feigning effort to score touchdowns.
Think about it. I'm totally serious. If we just edged the ball into range, got our 3 points, then worked on defense, that would waste little time. Then we get it back, get 3 more points... we're just bound to win some games like that.
Jeff Gordon: But every time the Rams extend a drive, they are keeping the other offense off the field. That is why you don't just pull in field goal range and take the three without trying for the end zone.
Jason Jackson: Get rid of Marc Bulger!!!! Why is the kick returner in there, and why are we throwing to him to win the game!!!!!
Jeff Gordon: Stanley is a speed guy. Given the time left, the Rams did have to go up top at some point. But the Dolphins (unlike Mizzou) wasn't going to let a guy get behind them at the end of the game.
smackuprams: saw the score, didnt see the game....as you see it,what was the pos. and negs both side of the ball...ty
Jeff Gordon: Pros: Good offensive line play, Jackson looked like his old self as long as he lasted, Pace came back without getting hurt.
Cons: Miami ran the ball effectively and took away the Rams wideouts on the other side of the ball. Bulger's three INTs were the margin of defeat.
wtf?: Hey, they only lost by 4 and the Dolphins only scored 16. I'm used to losing now just like they are. Losing and only scoring 12 points would be an embarrassment for most teams but those are positives for this group of losers. Some decent defense and oline play and we still lose at home. Pitiful. Four winning seasons in 19 years says it all for this disorganization. If it wasn't for the Detroit Lions they would be know as the worst franchise in football (yes, worse than Cincinnati).
Jeff Gordon: Worse than Cincinnati? Nah.
The Bright Side: Well Gordo at least they didn't get blown out today. I guess thats progress...isn't it? After this game by Bulger (INT's and failures in the Red Zone) is upper management thinking about making a change for next season? I know his contract is a burden but don't they HAVE to bring in someone that can challenge him for the starting job.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams have to get stronger at QB, whether Bulger stays or goes. My guess is that he'll stay, since the team owes him guaranteed money. But, yes, the Rams need to bring in a legit competitor.
Christopher Johnson: Jeff, Jim Haslett's just been named Rams head coach for next year and you've been named Director of Player Personnel. You and Haslett sit down to evaluate the team. Who's untouchable? Right now, I've got Steven Jackson, Donnie Avery and Keenan Burton on the offense, MAYBE Orlando Pace on the O-line, Derek Stanley on special teams and Chris Long, Will Witherspoon and OJ Atogwe on defense. Nobody else. Did I miss anyone?
Jeff Gordon: I'd want Bartell back at CB. I like Ryan at DT, but the Rams paid a price for having just three viable players at that position this year (Carriker and Glover were the others). I like Adeyanju as a utility defensive lineman. I'd give Barron another year, given the difficulty in finding replacements.
The punter and kicker stay, of course.
GoneGator: Wow, I cannot believe I actually made it through watching that game! Anyway, not that my opinion matters, but I think Haslett deserves a shot. Today's game wasn't bad by the D. And once again, Bulger stunk it up.
He reminds me so much of Everett in his "Chris" years. Throwing off the back foot, throwing sidearm, picks, etc. He probably is damaged goods due to the previous seasons and the terrible offensive line(s), but today there is no excuse. The second and third picks were just plain bad. And he shows zero emotion. Amazing. And when they need it most in the 2 minute drill, it took over a minute to move 20 yards.
I really think the game plan was pretty solid. But the lack of a "big" WR, Torry and his new 'gator arms and Marc's deflated game style, they were doomed.
Send Marc, and Torry away for next season. Marc is done, and Torry just does not play hard anymore.
Jeff Gordon: Holt was actually better in this game, but, sure, it's time to spend money on something else.
Don: Bulger STINKS! What was his final QB rating? Less than 25 for sure.
And why didn't the Rams go for it on 4th and 1 on the second to last drive? Jeez. Losers...
Jeff Gordon: Marc's passing rating was . . . 22.2. Not good.
mpreston17: Stephen Jackson was back and rushed for nearly 100 yards. So what is the excuse for Marc Bulger's dismal performance today? Totally inept in the red zone and a passer rating of 22.2. It seems pretty clear to me that it's way past due to give Berlin his opportunity. Haslett needs to tell ownership that the situation requires a change at the QB position. Need to see if Berlin can perform, and if not that gives them insight to a need on draft day. Better to lose while trying to find a solution than to lose in the same manner week after week.
Jeff Gordon: Dunno if Brock is the answer, but it would be interesting to see him play more than a cameo role at some point before this nightmare ends.
Jeff in California: This game just confirmed that Marc Bulger is no longer an even average qb. This loss is totally on him. Please as an organization go in a differnent direction at QB. All the previous seasons hits have taken their toll. Absolutely pathetic performance by him. I am through standing up for him to other fans. He lost me today.
Jeff Gordon: That bandwagon has pretty much cleared out.
scottw: Another great day for Bulger. We need to keep Haslett and Bulger so that we can continue this fine example of Rams football. Why do you punt with 4 minutes left in the game and 2 yards to get?I don't understand why they continue to play conservative football? Finally what happened to Steven Jackson,I only saw half the game,he started and wasn't around in the 4th quarter, did he get hurt again?Thank you for letting me blow off some steam.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson insists he wasn't gassed, contrary to what Haslett said. So this could become more of a story this week.
hadl2jackson1973: what is your personal opinion of why the rams can't get in the endzone?
Jeff Gordon: So many things go wrong. I can't single out one. Bottom line, though: If a team can muscle up with a power-running game inside the 10, that makes all the other stuff work.
steve in kentucky: Gordo...love the forum
I'm in Louisville...can't see or hear the game other than via internet.
Why in the world was Jackson not in on the last two series....Is he hurt again or was this some kind of ridiculous coaching move?
Jeff Gordon: Difference of opinion there, between the coach and the player. The Rams didn't want to overexpose Jackson and lose him for multiple games again. I don't think the coach trusts the player to make the call if he's good to go at the end of games.
chrisdavidg: Bulger better not be here next year. He is obviously the weak link. Our team is not bad when we have a running game but we need to be able to counter the running game with a decent passing game. How do you feel Vobora did today.
Jeff Gordon: The rookie LB is OK. He missed some reads and blew some assignments, but he also made some players. Overall it was a positive to get him out there.
ramrage: Hello Gordo,
I suppose that the reason the score was so close on this game was because Miami could only manage 3 points off of 3 Bulger interceptions, and that they were overcome by so many stupid penalties--one of them costing them a touchdown. As for the Rams--four scores that settle for 12 points instead of a possible 28. I've never posted this before, but I'm now convinced that Bulger is garbage. I don't believe he can be redeemed in a Rams uniform, no matter how many quality receivers come in (too bad your Klopfensteins and Pittmans have to be depended on to catch the football), and no matter what kind of a line is in front of him. It seemed the line did pretty well today, yet he manages 3 interceptions, and some of his behind-the-receiver throws were inexcusable. He really does make a lot of bad throws every game, it seems.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, so it seems. This was not his finest hour.
Mazzination: I thought the defense and offensive line played rather well today. I think today the receivers should have as much blame as Bulger. They had no separation all day. What happened to Torry Holt anyway he has been non-factor all season. The Rams need a play-maker at WR. Bulger also cannot throw the deep ball as we have seen all season which limits the offensive play calling to spread the field. What do you make of this Gordo?
Jeff Gordon: Credit the Dolphins for the Rams' lack of separation. Their coverage was physical and yet they didn't get beat deep.
Mazzination: On a positive not OJ Atogwe should be heading to the pro-bowl. The question is will the Rams resign him? Will the Rams win another game this season?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will make every effort to keep him. Will the Rams win another game? I say yes, IF Jackson stays healthy.
Bob: Gordo,
2-14 looking better and better. Bulger is God awful. Haslett and his staff must go...PERIOD!! Also, Jackson made a hell of a difference today. I'm really glad he suited up!
Does this team even remotely know what a TOUCHDOWN is besides giving up a bushel to the opponent? They down right SUCK!
Jeff Gordon: Actually, Jackson made a huge difference. Did you notice the score differentials in the games he sat out?
remsam: Jeff,
We saw the same play from Bulger. He can lead the team down the field but can't get them to score. How bout those interceptions....his accuracy with interceptions is amazing...right into the arms of the opposing players.....Why is it that we are paying him 65 million.
Bulger's lack of energy and emotion really inspires his teamates to take it to the next level. This guy has got to go!
Isn't it about time we put Berlin in at QB for the remaining games and see what he can do.
Jeff Gordon: At least one of those picks, the first one, was the result of a great read by the linebacker. And the third one was a borderline desperation heave.
Mazzination: What do you think Rams fans should ask for Christmas? because it does not look like the Rams will win anytime soon.
Jeff Gordon: Ask Santa for new franchise leadership.
B Berlin Sr.: When do you think Haslet has seen enough of our over priced 65 million dollar QB and will start the future QB Brock Berlin?
Jeff Gordon: Is Brock the future QB? Sure, it could happen . . . but look for the organization to look outside for somebody more established.
Jack J: Gordo,
Well it was not a blow out but it is still a loss and Bulger continues to look horrible. I think the Rams would be more well regarded around the league if they could have played toe to toe with the teams they lost to the way they did today. The Rams still have problems scoring touchdowns and it is difficult to win games by kicking field goals. Haslett now reports Jackson's leg was bothering him again so who knows when Steven will be able to play like he is capable of.
Jeff Gordon: Steven looked 100 percent to me. Now he just has to play all four quarters to make a full difference.
sean: i think bulger is looking better every week. this season needs to be something the rams can build on, if bulger can play better in the next game, and so on, he'll be ready for next year....when will the rams be watchable again? rams football is a cure to all those who are happy and who want depression, just as it's a cure to teams in need of a spark, seand in the rams!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will be watchable after the organization gets new leadership and that new guys makes some fundamental changes.
BrotherBri: Jeff,
Nice to at least see the Rams compete. Much more tolerable Sundays that way.
At this moment, I am just glad the Chiefs play the Raiders. Perhaps the Chiefs could win, allowing the Rams' record to descend, moving them up the draft board. Losing out -- and how can we not, seeing as Ram offensive touchdowns are as rare as injury-free weeks in St. Louis sports -- we could move up to #3 or, with a little Bengal luck, even #2.
Whether we opt for Oher or Smith, or move down to take a Monroe, a top-four pick means a good OT. And picking that high in round 2 means a shot at a top Center, either Alex Mack of Cal or Max Unger of Oregon. Those two plus siging Jordan Gross could mean the Rams rebuild the O-line quickly. A better O-line means more holes for Jackson, more time for the Teen Squad to finish routes, and more time for Bulger to find them. That should mean not only more touchdowns, but sustained drives that keep our smallish D from wearing down. And THAT is what a turnaround is made of.
Go Chiefs!!!
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.
Dan: Gordo,
Please explain to everyone who thinks drafting a QB is an instant panacea that they are mistaken. The Rams should absolutely not reach in the 1st round on a QB; reaching on draft picks is what got the Rams in the talent-deficient situation in which they find themselves. Don't you think the Rams would be better suited to take the best player at #4 (the Rams likely landing spot, unless the Chiefs and Raiders play Denver every week)? Hopefully one of the stud LOTs will still be on the board as whatever QB is behind center needs some blocking up front.
Thanks!
Jeff Gordon: The Rams will have a top OT waiting for them when they draft. That is step one to the rebuilding process.
Bulger2Holt4td: Well the offensive line played oustanding today I think given the circumstances. Gotta shovel some more of the blame onto Bulger after today.
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, you won't see this O-line play much better than that.
Roanoke: Didn't see the game, but was wondering whether Bulger was under any pressure -- no sacks today. Miami's secondary was its defensive weakness. So why is Bulger throwing 3 interceptions? Why can't he generate any kind of passing attack that leads the Rams downfield to an actual touchdown? Steven Jackson did his part to aid the running game. Is Bulger just that bad? Does he have any good excuses this week?
Jeff Gordon: No excuses this week. He got rushed a few times and he took some bumps, but, for the most, he had time to do his job. And the ground game set him up for some nice down-and-distance situations.
Lawarence Marmie: I think I actually saw Jacob Bell block some people today- can you confirm that?
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, and Brett Romberg looked like a Pro Bowler. Weird.
Michael Gordon: jeff, end of another game and once again, bulger can't move the ball at any point in the game, the offense stalls far too often and we have an obsession with throwing to useless TE's...at least we were in it at the half this week.
All those praying for the rams to get rid of jackson are ludicris. He means so much to this team. If bulger threw the ball within a couple metres of his recievers this team wins today...
And you've gotta question Nick Leckey, Romberg comes in and the team looks a lot more in sync. How did u see the offense line play?
Finally, I know lots want a LT in the 1st round next year, but in terms of upgrades, Oher over Pace is not nearly what Vontae Davis over Brown or Mays over Chavous or Stafford over Bulger. It would be a good move for the future, but it;'s not gonna bring the immediate dividens that people seem to want and WILL complain about next year.
Jeff Gordon: The O-line played pretty well, on balance. If Pace plays like this the rest of the season, perhaps the team will pay his hefty freight for one more year while grooming a replacement.
Frank: Hello,
Should Mark Bulger be replaced for next week's game. The angle of throw on the last interception almost guaranteed the result.
Jeff Gordon: There was no play there. At least Marc didn't underthrow it. But Miami was not going to let a WR get behind the secondary. We're talking about Mizzou here.
boleil: I stand corrected from the earlier comment. It wasn't a team choke job imminent. It was just Bulger's usual poor play that sank the ship this time. It's Jim Everett all over again. Bulger is shell shocked. He's done. So once the season is over, who's the best choice to be the new crash test dummy? A draft pick? Matt Cassel?
Jeff Gordon: I believe the Rams need to draft a QB (although not at the top of the draft) and bring in a veteran capable of bidding for the job in '09. Then a QB with a 22.2 passer rating would take a seat.
bighawk_50: Jackson looked good today. I wish i could say that for pro bowl quarterback Bulger. No excuses for him this time plenty of blocking etc., but he seems quite satified to settle for field goals I guess its the best the team can do. Why not bring in the backup Quaterbacks? There going no where any way.
Jeff Gordon: Bring in Trent Green? Why?
kbramz: Is there any chance that Bulger will NOT be back next season? And how much of this is really his fault vs no protection? I remember Jim Everett going through the same thing about 20 years ago. It hurts to get hit!
Jeff Gordon: He didn't get hit much in this game, so there were no excuses. Give Miami some credit for good coverage, but still . . .
Sam Bradford's Agent: With 3 interceptions from Bulger, do you think a QB could be a sleeper pick in next years draft for the Rams? What about NT Oklahoma's NT Terrence Cody?
Jeff Gordon: Well, it won't be Bradford. He'll go very high if he comes out and I don't see the Rams going there. Maybe the team will pick somebody who needs work, like K-State's Freeman.
st3v346: Jeff:
Does Rams management really believe that Bulger is part of the solution and not the primary problem. Every facet of the Rams play today was good to excellent except for the really bad Quarterback. My guess is if the Rams do not get a free agent quarterback in the off season; no home game will be a sell out. Matt Cassel looks very good right now.
Jeff Gordon: Matt will command a fortune. He will also get to pick between multiple suitors. He is playing his way out of the Rams' range.
stlooney: Hi Gordo, thanks for the forum. I can't recall ever seeing an NFL team so inept at getting into the end zone. It's just maddening to watch. In your expert opinion what will happen first, a Mark Bulger touchdown pass or a Corey Chavous open field tackle?
Jeff Gordon: A Chavous tackle.
Rich: Hey Gordo,
It was great to see the defense actually show up for once and actually keep the Rams in the game.
To bad Marc Bulger kept giving it away in the second half.
I keep hearing the cap number is going to be too high to cut him loose; however, is it really worth it to keep a guy under center that is a virtual turn-over machine?
Thanks.
Jeff Gordon: Dumping him would create a cap hit, but keeping him would also eat up lots of cap space. So do the Rams really come out ahead by sticking with him. That is what the next team president will have to decide.
remsam: Why do we keep putting Barron on the field especially in key situations. Seems to me like Alex and the coaches can't learn from their mistakes. Barron has been in the league for 4 seasons...guess its just an example of having one year of experience repeated 4 times.
Jeff Gordon: On balance, though, the whole line played pretty well for a change.
butsir@core.com: Hi,Jeff.
Are there any second-string quarterbacks who will be free agents or whom we could trade for in the offseason.
I realize that we have no chance at Cassell, but right now, even Fitzpatrick looks good.
Jeff Gordon: Yes, even Ryan looks good right now. Of a guy like Leftwich.
mightymike105: Hey Gordo,
Hope u and your family had a nice Thanksgiving. Well Jeff today I can say the team as a whole played hard. I can't grip about the defense, O-Line, or S. Jackson. But man Marc was bad today! Little or no pressure. Plenty of time to throw in most cases. He just stunk! He completed less than 50% of his passes. He uniform was touched so little by Miami it doesn't even need cleaning. I know he will not be leaving us anytime soon but we need a credible QB to come in next year in case he repeats this years performance. With any of our QB's playing at the level they have most of this year Jeff, this team hardly has a chance to win another game. Better QB play and we win today. If Haslett's stay here depends on Bulger or Green leading the troops to at least 2 more wins, well God bless him. With the remaining schedule I will give him a 20% chance of meeting the 2 win mandate. We still have the 49rs and Seahawks at the dome. Both teams are nothing special.
Jeff Gordon: But . . . the 49ers are playing better than they were. They can't be taken for granted in The Ed.
Eric West: Hello Jeff,
I've been a faithful Ram fan for 40 years. I believe there are some salvageble players, but if Bulger does not improve his mechanics he'll never win another game. Are the coaches stressing the basics in practice? I've never seen him look so lost!
Jeff Gordon: Any mechanical breakdowns are the result of lost confidence and the dreaded "battered quarterback syndrome." And that isn't easily fixed.
Steve 1: Was it just me, or were there several times that Donnie Avery was being faulted for not being where he was supposed to be or doing what he was supposed to do? Though he's certainly had some bright spots, has this been an all-season thing for him?
Jeff Gordon: It's pretty much been a weekly issue. He's working hard, but this is on-the-job training for him.
Roanoke: When your best quarterback is Bulger, and he plays like he did today against a very beatable Miami, your goose is cooked. His performance is just pathetic, and he needs to snap out of it (if he can) or the Rams will continue to be losers well into next year. Need to draft a qb and look for better qb backups.
Jeff Gordon: Agreed.
mrjondgray: Since the O-Line wasn't atrocious today and Bulger didn't exactly play up to his contract, do you see the chances of the Rams picking a QB in the first round of the draft going up?
Jeff Gordon: Not really. Any QB picked high would command huge money and require lots of training time. This team has many needs. I'd rather see them locate a veteran for immediate help and draft more of a project.
RAMFAN501: thanks for the good work under these circumstances how much under the salary cap r we now we will need every dime next year thanks
Jeff Gordon: There isn't a ton of cap room this year, but there are a LOT of veterans will huge cap numbers. Some of them will go for sure. And a LOT of them could go if the next management team believes it can find help through the draft and lower tier free agents.
Tshow: Positive. I was happy with the play of Greco at RG. I listened to some of the game on Sirius St. Louis Broadcast, they stated Looker was coming to the sidelines stating that the CB's for Miami was calling out their routes at the line os scrimmage!!!!!!!!! What is this all about?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams offense doesn't fool teams. To change that, the team has to run different plays out of the same looks or the same plays out of different looks. Part of the predictability is the inexperience at WR, which does limit what Al Saunders can do.
Lawarence Marmie: Hell of a game by Joe Klopenstein today- wouldn't you say?
Jeff Gordon: The Klop was everywhere!
superjim: Hi Gordo,
Overall I'm delighted with the performace today. The d played tough, stopped the run largely, and while we didn't get much pressure we did play solidly in coverage (Jason Craft in particular). O.J. Atogwe kept up his stunning season; surely he's a Pro Bowler now? Every positive play this season seems to have involved him in some way. On offense the o-line was terrific opening up running lanes, and even giving Bulger time to make throws. Jackson looked dominating and the receivers caused the Dolphins problems. Josh Brown and Donnie Jones played well again, and the coverage units kept Ted Ginn quiet.
Now, I want to make this clear, I haven't been on the 'bench Marc Bulger' bandwagon. We don't have anyone better and in truth he's had no time and no run game so far this year. So it isn't all his fault. He was shocking today though, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say he single handidly lost us the game. 3 interceptions, 2 of which were entirely his fault (not the 3rd, that was a desperation throw) and a sub .500 completion percentage. What do you suggest Gordo? Do we stick with him or go to Green? What about for next season? If Haslett doesn't get the job next year he should be looking back at today's game and thinking about what should have been.
Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: I'd not on the Berlin Bandwagon, but I would like to see him get another look over Green at some point. When the game turns ugly at Arizona, maybe that will be the time to go to him.
RamFan503: Don't know that there is really a question - except maybe - Can or should the NFL fine teams like this for harming the NFL product line? I realize we have not been through the futility that fans of teams like Detroit have been through so this is really a question on behalf of them as well. The NFL should pull all TV revenues from teams that refuse to compete and put out a product that no one should be forced to pay for. Right now, teams that are working hard to put out a good product are paying their revenues so that teams like the Rams can get paid. Ticket revenues will go down because fans will start to not care - but does the rest of the NFL have to pay for this?
Jeff Gordon: Sure, just as the rest of the NFL pays for the Bengal and Raider futility.
tbdb: Can't tell you how disappointed I am with Bulger's performance, but I'm sure this will get beat to death on the chat today. On a different issue, I was great to see some blocking today and Jackson hitting the holes after the last few weeks of futility. If anyone doubts the contributions of Steven Jackson to this offense this game should convince you of his importance.
Jeff Gordon: Indeed it should.
BrotherBri: How do you feel our Long did against their Long? Given that theirs was injured, does it at least seem like we got the better bargain?
Jeff Gordon: Chris was pretty good in this game. His sack was later downgraded to an "aborted play", but the got to know Pennington in this game.
mteel7237: Being a WVU fan, I've always rooted for Mark but today there are no excuses. Bulger had plenty of time to throw. He was just awful. This game was there for them to win today. This loss (and many more) is all on the QB today.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue with that.
Jack C: Hi Jeff
Thanks for taking fan questions.
As their record suggests, nearly everything that can be wrong with a football team is, in fact, wrong with Rams. But of all the things that are wrong with the Rams, the two things that cannot be quickly changed are 1) management and 2) money. Bad management is what keeps some teams in the toilet year after year. Because it starts with the owner, there is usually nothing anyone can do about it. Just ask the Lions. The other long-term problem is money. The Rams sunk a pile of money on players who either don't contribute or are incapable of contributing. These "bad bets" are going to haunt this team for years the same way San Francisco suffered with a deadwood payroll.
I know the NFL is the league of the fast turn around, but in the case of the Rams I think the systemic problems are too great for there to much reason for hope.
Your thoughts?
Jeff Gordon: That can change with management. In a couple of years, the big salary disappointments will be off the books and the roster will be rebuilt.
scottw: Another poor game by Bulger, yet Haslett keeps sending him out.Time for a new look Rams.No Bulger,No Haslett lets start a rebuilding from the bottom up.I understand that Bulger will be a big cap hit, but I don't see many wins with him at QB.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe real job competition would bring the best out of him.
Rampage88: Somehow, someway the Rams must find a way to bring in a legitimate quarterback to compete with Marc Bulger next season. The protection held up well enough today for him to have a much better day than he did. I don’t care if they do it through free agency or the draft but they have to do it. It is also clear that the playcalling is too conservative and Torry Holt is too slow to get open. We were running the ball well so I have no idea why Al Saunders wouldn’t call for a playaction deep pass. I would swear Linehan is still in charge of the offense. Al is not what I expected.
Jeff Gordon: The Dolphins were not going to get beat this game, play action or no play action.
john jett: how come the rams can't stop the run?i stated that the rams do not know
how to play football. the rams are sure to blow this present team:coaches,
players, and management up.
the fans seemed to applaud the team and support them. what
does richie the "sherrif"think about the support today.
also will the rams get a new stadium or will the rams have
moved back to los angeles by then.
thanks,
scott linehan-and stewey griffin.
Jeff Gordon: The Rams could get a new stadium in the distant future, IF it has new ownership committed to St. Louis and willing to put its own resources into the project.
thamnosma: Quick comments. Defense stepped up today. Pittman isn't a bad 2nd for Jackson, but they both deserve an O-Line and a QB. Bulger is done in St. Louis, his contract being the largest theft and fraud outside of Wall Street. Lastly, with 50 seconds left, I don't understand the call for the bomb. They had time to move the ball via dinks and dunks (Bulger's specialty) before the end zone tosses. With Bulger's trouble throwing long passes (receivers coming back to catch them), I thought Saunders/Haslett's decision-making was poor.
Jeff Gordon: Maybe it was too soon to try the home run ball, but if the Rams wait a few plays, then it would be even harder to get a receiver behind everybody.
Murat from PA: Hello Gordo;
I do not remember seeing Bulger with this many incompletions. He had time to throw the ball this week. I also noticed that he overthrew almost all long balls. What is wrong? What do you think?
Thanks a bunch.
Murat
Jeff Gordon: He lacks confidence and comfort in there, so his passing is just a mess. He was solid on the short to mid-range stuff in this game, but the downfield throws were way off the mark. It's as if the is throwing it up and hoping for the best.
mike: Gordo
Hate to beat the proverbial dead horse, and I dont want to be accused of piling on Bulger- but does anyone feel like we should be getting more production and leadership out of this position. And frankly I'm even more dissapointed in Haslett's lack of leadership in not even willing to promote Berlin. Beyond that- to whoever signed off on sending big dollars to Green who apparently isnt able to play/lead. I'm of the mindset that the size of the paycheck should not determine who's on the field, and if management gave the go ahead to contracts to guys who can not compete at this level then their get no free pass either. Your thots?
Jeff Gordon: The Green signing was a huge mistake, as it turned out. I thought he would offer much more as a back-up this season. He has been terrible. In fact, I'd use him as the No. 3 guy and promote Berlin to the back-up role.
Scott Linehan: Hey Gordo- how's it going? Ever since I was fired by the Rams, I've been having a re-occuring dream about coaching an entire team of tight ends. I know you're not a Pyschologist, but what do you suppose it means?
P.S.
When Jim Haslett is fired, do you think he might want to come over and hang out with me?
Jeff Gordon: No, he won't.
lancegoldbergpainting: Jeff,
Do you still agree with not seeing what Brock Berlin can do ?
Also, where are all the "new" guys Haslett said he's gonna play to
evaluate? I only saw Vobora who was playing due to injury !!!
Jeff Gordon: He played Greco, too, but with one exception (rookie guard Roy Schuening) his inactive players were either hurt or guys just signed off the street. As for Berlin, I'd to see him get some extended action before the year ends. I don't think there is much there, but you never know. Just ask Kurt Warner.
Herk15: Why does the coaching staff always use the run game to get to the redzone, and then try to pass it in?
Jeff Gordon: Their inability to really and truly muscle up in the red zone is the root of all this. They can't go into a jumbo formation and pave people. They don't have that kind of power.
Luigi999: Hello, Gordo
Is Chip really locked into keeping Haslett? I mean, lowering the bar to two victories out of the team's last 5 games? Geez ... Haslett's lost his last SIX games and Chip wants him? What gives?
Thanks ...
Jeff Gordon: He's not "locked in" to Haslett, but he isn't eager to hold a coaching search either. That is a big decision for an interim owner to make.
Jack J: Gordo,
Did Haslett's comment that he was prowd of the defensive play today bother you? Football is a total team effort and Bulger was protected well today but still played horribly. I guess Haslett is just out of answers like he commented last week. This is so sad!!!
Jeff Gordon: Jim was happy with the "D" and happy with the ground game. And we all saw what happened with the passing game. It WAS sad.
Steve W: How well is Adam Carriker's play this season and also Chris Long. I had high hopes for both. I thought perhaps Carriker may move to end, at some point.
Jeff Gordon: Carriker has been banged up this year. And he would benefit from a real four-man rotation on the interior line, to keep him fresh. He could play DE in a run stopping situation, but you can't expect him to develop an outside pass rush.
Rich Owens: Hey Gordo, just checking in to let you know that I'm still available. Can you let Haslett and Devanney know that next time you talk to them? On their list of needs that they can fill with free agents, I must be being overlooked!!!
Jeff Gordon: No, you are no being overlooked. You are being ignored. There is a difference.
RamFanInPA: Are you saying that you do not think Devaney will be moved into the GM position at seasons end? If not, I am sure the Rams are compiling a list of possible GM's candidates now, BUT WHO IS MAKING THE LIST?
Jeff Gordon: That depends on what the ownership picture looks like. That is step one in the process. Whatever happens there will dictate the course of action. Devaney could end up as the GM For Now if Chip decides not to overhaul the entire operation while sifting through offers from prospective buyers.
Philj: What would the cap hit be if the Rams cut Bulger June 2nd?
DO you think theres any chance Berlin gets a start or two these last four games just to see what we got?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams own Marc some guaranteed money last season. I believe the difference in keeping him versus moving him is about $3 million in cap dollars.
Bill Bellichek: The Rams offensive and defensive schemes are so boring and unimaginative, that I fell asleep watching the tapes my staff secretly taped of them.
Jeff Gordon: Good one.
James: I was lucky..er.. unlucky enuf to catch the last 3 min. of the game. I realy have to wonder what Al Saunders was thinking with that last pass to Stanley with 50 seconds left. The short crossing routes were working, sorta. Bulger looked like he was getting time to at least look at the 2nd receiver. If the plan was to try and stretch the defence so that he could get some more room on the side lines then you think Bulger would have /should have thrown the ball a little more outta bounds!?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams are just trying to get in the end zone there. They could have worked a few shorter passes, then thrown team while the Dolphins were sitting on the deep ball. In this case, Bulger tried to hit a homer. Can't blame him -- all the bunt singles earlier in the game didn't add up to much.
Lawarence Marmie: I know Dave Vobora gets the title for being the final draft pick in 2007- but don't you think the title of Mr. Irrevelant should go to Joe Kloppenstien instead?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, that would be appropriate. But at least he is still here, unlike Dominique Byrd.
lancegoldbergpainting: Jeff,
Why was Jackson on the sideline again late in the game?
Was he tired? GIVE ME A BREAK !!!
Also, why do we have so many "busts" still on this team?
1. Tye Hill.....Always hurt, or always getting burned !! He SUCKS !!
2. Joe Klopfenstein.....Can't catch, and can't block !!! He SUCKS !!
3. Jonathan Wade....Can't beat out journeyman players !! He SUCKS !!
( plus he needs a HAIRCUT )
Jeff Gordon: Cornerbacks are hard to come by, so the Rams will keep working with Hill and Wade. As for the Klop, this looks like the end of the line for him here.
Roanoke: Does Bulger understand that he's underperforming week in and week out, and that it's not always someone else's fault? He's not much of a leader if he can't pick up his game, particularly when doing so would actually lead to a win against a beatable team like Miami.
Jeff Gordon: I don't know how brutally honest Marc is when he analyzes his own play.
Ozy Rams Fan: Hi Gordo,
I have to say i really thought we would win this week, with pace, bulger and Jackson back. When Jackson is healthy the Rams are a real NFL team.
I lay the blame on Haslett and Saunders, both of which made bad calls, Haslett not going for it on 4th down late in the game. That was a situation begging to go for it, not going for it and handing back to a defence which is behond horrible, was gutless and will cost him a chance at the job ! Saunders play calling all year leaves you scratching your head over and over. Rams on first drive on the day, make it to first and goal. They got there on Jackson strong running. does he get the ball, no pittman and 2 incompletes. He never got the chance to man it in.
I hate to say it but it looks like no more wins this year, and a season worst then last year. Look which way Miami went, then look at our pathetic Rams. I guess i can hope for a win agianst the 49ers.
Gordo Jackson was quiet late in the game tired or injured or what ?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, Seattle looks like the one team left that this team can clearly beat. But we'll see.
virginiatom: Another pitiful performance. This team has to be blown up, and it has to start with coaching. How can Chip possibly consider bringing Haslett back? If he cared at all for the fans he would fire Haslett the day after the season ends and bring in a strong coach who has more than just fire, like maybe some coaching ability. Its just so inconceivable that a guy who failed as a head coach, failed as a defensive coordinator, and now fails miserably as the interim coach would even be considered for the job. its decision like this that make the Rams the laughing stock of the National Football League.
Jeff Gordon: Haslett has been a Coach of the Year in the NFL. He took perennial also-ran New Orleans to postseason play. He coordinated some pretty good defenses back in the day.
Utterly hapless he is not.
Lawarence Marmie: It looks like your boy Cogs saw some time on the bench today and the offense was actually able to move the ball. Is he still "A Beast"?
Jeff Gordon: Richie was having a nice game, run blocking and pass blocking. Then he complained of light-headedness. You can touch that, I won't.
Bob: Do you see the Rams having the same type of turnaround next season as Miami and Atlanta have this season?
Jeff Gordon: It can happen, but it will take great leadership from the top. And most of these high-priced failing this year would have to turn around next year, because dumping them all to reallocate their money is tough.
Rams Fan In Southlake Texas: I totally agree we need a new team from top first. I've read you say before that in the NFL a team can turn around in a years time but I just can't believe that is true from the Rams. The turnarounds we have seen were the results of year of smaller changes that resulted in a positive product on the field. St. Louis' failure and horrible product is the results of years horrible choices and I don't believe can be fixed a year or even a few years. Then the fans are teased by what could be when the Rams beat Dallas or if they scored a redzone touchdown they could have won the game today. This team stinks and it will take years of positive choices to undo the stench and I hope Chip or whoever ends up with this pile of poo and can turn things around.
Jeff Gordon: The '98 Rams turned in a hurry, but there were many expiring contracts on that team. And the Rams fell into Marshall Faulk when the Colts decided to go for Edgerrin James instead.
Corey Chavous: How in the hell am I still playing on an NFL team? God, I love this league!!!
Jeff Gordon: Chavous was reasonably competitive today. Not his worst hour.
BakoCAramFan: I still say 6-10 is the best case scenario. There are too many horrible offensive stats... low number of touchdown overall, unable to score more than 20 points in nearly every game, horrible in the red zone, incredible amount of offensive line penalties, incredible amount of turnovers, poor imagination in play calling, sackless when in comes to taking the chance on fourth down, very few big-yardage offensive plays, give up plenty of sacks...
In other words, total offensive futility.
Who could we have beaten to get to 8-8?
Jeff Gordon: IF the team built momentum early, 8-8 was doable. The same team that beat Washington and Dallas could have beaten Seattle twice and Frisco twice. The Bills and Bears, at home, could have been wins. Or this Miami team, which, as we saw today, is nothing special.
Roanoke: Glad to see that all it took was getting Steven Jackson back in the lineup. How many TDs was that worth? When it comes to "red" zone efficiency, Bulger is colorblind.
Jeff Gordon: Jackson's 110 yards offense should have opened up good things. Or he should have found his way into the end zone, with better execution and playcalling.
jimrams66: was that really a 22 passer rating?
Jeff Gordon: Yes.
Joe T: Watched this on DirecTV today. Upper level appeared to be void of many fans. I know this was technically a sellout, but what was the true attendance?
Jeff Gordon: Maybe 50,000. Maybe 47,000. Hard to say.
carlosf: It appeared the O-Line played well today. Did any of the younger guys see time at O-Line? Why not give Berlin some PT to see what he can do? Has Brian Leonard been cut yet?
Jeff Gordon: Greco filled in for Richie when Incognito got "light-headed." He did fine, too. Schuening was inactive again.
Ramfrank: Wow, Jeff. Hearing that Shaw would have any input into ANYTHING just speaks volumes about this organization.]
What an unmitigated disaster. This team needs EVERYTHING: Ownership, a president, a GM, a coaching staff and actual football talent.
Sorry, but to me, Haslett has shown very little.
Jeff Gordon: It's hard to see a heck of a lot of progress in this 2-10 team.
randycentorani: Does Jim Haslett even want this job with the rebuilding that it would require???
Jeff Gordon: He believes that with a handful of really big upgrades, especially on the lines, this team could turn. We saw indicators of that in this game.
virginiatom: If Bulger remains next year he has to change his style. His body language, fromt he way he walks to the huddle with no excitement, to the way he just tolerates the poor play of the line men in front of him. He needs to watch some video of quarterbacks who know what a leader is. Bulger says its not his style to do that. For 65 million dollars, he needs to change his style. What he is doing now isn't working.
Jeff Gordon: I don't see him changing his demeanor while trying to please others. He is who he is.
ramfreak23: jeff, i truly believe how a team performs is a reflection of their practices. Take a look a Cassel of the Patriots. He's a totally different QB halfway through the season. You don't see bad footwork anymore and his decision making has become very good. Why? I believe Bill Belichick has a lot to do with his development as well as Tom Brady's Hall of Fame status.
Game in and game out, I see Bulger with terrible footwork. He makes terrible decisions.
My question is, hasn't this entire coaching staff shown the inability to develope and improve players? I see no attention to detail with the QB drop, the Oline blocking, rushing the passer and tackling on defense. hasslet and his staff can't return after this can they???
Jeff Gordon: If Cassel quarterbacked a team that was 5-23 the last two seasons, I'm not sure his mechanics would be golden by this point. Matt eased into his role with a really good team, with lots of leadership help. He took it from there, as Warner did with the '99 Rams. What would have become of Kurt had he broken in with the 2007-08 Rams.
Roanoke: Do you think if we renegotiated Bulger's contract and gave him more money he'd play better? Maybe he should just hold out for more money next year. That would give our QB draftee some needed experience running the team.
Jeff Gordon: Funny guy.
Ryanc C: Hey Jeff,
Thanks for the time and being patient with the brutal pain of the Rams Faithful.
Can you tell me how you think Grecco played and your overall assesment of the o-line today
Jeff Gordon: Greco did fine when he filled in during the second half. Romberg did very well at center. Everybody was pretty good -- no sacks allowed, 4.3 yards per rush. You'll take that every week.
lancegoldbergpainting: Jeff.....WAKE UP !!!
Jeff Gordon: They stopped serving coffee!
Roanoke: The RAMS have had bad special teams for years. Now we have two good kickers and better coverage than ever. But what's the use if we have no offense, can't score with better field position, and still can't make enough defensive stops? Are we over-invested in special teams now? Should we unload some kicker salaries and spend it on rebuilding. Sure field goals are nice, but they're not enough for the defense we have.
Jeff Gordon: Don't unload a team strength to save a few dollars. The bigger budget issues are the top-dollar guys getting old, getting hurt or getting worse. Brown and Jones are two of the few bright spots.
lancegoldbergpainting: Jeff,
Another point....Derek Stanley is NOT a good return man !!!
He is NOT decisive with his returns...AND he gets tackled very easily !!
Jeff Gordon: Yeah, he slowed down almost every time he neared the wedge. Can't do that. Pick and seam and go for it. Slow down and you're done.
ramfanoncapecod: i think al saunders blew this game what do you think?
Jeff Gordon: His playcalling will get some attention, and rightfully so. But when the QB has a 22.2 passer rating, how can the offensive coordinator call plays that make him look smart?
joe passamonte: wouldnt it be nice to land free agent Matt Cassel? do you think Devaney has coaches in mind or do you think Haz stays?
Jeff Gordon: Billy has ideas on coaches, but the owner will make that call with advice from multiple sources. He'd rather not make a change, if Jim can show anything at all down the stretch.
ramfreak23: Jeff, How embarrased are you covering this franchise?
Jeff Gordon: I've seen worse.
Ray: Jeff,
Is there any conceivable scenario whereby the Rams could unload 2 or 3 of their "superstars" in the off season for a spate of younger talent? The $$ aspect of the game eludes me. Would anyone be interested in picking up Bulger's salary? How much would the Rams be accountable for?
Ray
Jeff Gordon: No team would be willing to take on Marc's salary. That's true for most of the higher-priced Rams. Each case is different; some cuts would have big cap implications, others less so. But it's to expect some turnover among the old guard (Holt, Pace, Little, et al).
virginiatom: I love your idea of Rex Ryan for coach next year, and Baltimore's performance this year again makes it clear he knows what he is doing. Plus, he will bring some good defensive talent here as free agents that will follow him because they know him. Why would anyone sign on with Haslett as coach? Players aren't stupid. They see what it for what it is.
Jeff Gordon: A new coach would make it easier to recruit FAs. Not sure what Rex could bring from Baltimore, but the man is credible.
Bald_81: Gordo,
With so many glaring weaknesses on this team, why would we not go BPA in the upcoming draft? Yes, OT would help us dearly, but this is not a one-year quick fix. It will require more than one draft in order to build this team back up, which would mean everything except RB is a go for us in '09. In fact, why not take one of Stafford/Bradford then take the best available OT in the second round? I was opposed to that notion before, but now we could even acquire another OT the following year via FA to solidify the line. Knowing us, we would pass on a QB so that we could take one next year when there is a rookie cap, only to see that player bust. I don't know, BPA or nay?
Jeff Gordon: Actually, signing free agent offensive linemen is dicey business. Teams tend to keep the top guys -- and the stars that switch teams usually head to a contender. How many so-so Rams O-Lineman have drawn overly generous offers from other teams over the years?
I don't mind locking into an OT in this draft because at least three of them could be top 10 picks, if not more. I don't see a MLB at that level and we've talked about the QB situation. Bradford would be a great addition . . . for 2010 or 2011. Or he might not make it at this level. Ideally, the Rams will find another Bulger off another roster and get him ready for near-term help.
Paul: There's no defending Bulger any more. He's done. He's not the first QB to lose it.It's happened before.Everyone needs to stop making excuses for him.
As for Haslett,he's a bone-head.The play calling in the red zone by itself is proof. He's as vanilla as could be.And the punt on 4 and 1 in the 4th? COME ON! He's an idiot.
Don't get me wrong...I don't really want us to win these meaningless games and drop in the draft. But when we have an opportunity like we did today,I think the fans deserve better than the moron-tandem of Bulger and Haslett flushing it down the toilet by being idiots. The players on the team who showed up and actually do try deserve better as well.
Jeff Gordon: I would have gone for it on fourth-and-1. At 2-9, what do you have to lose?
Plaxico Burress's Leg: OUCH!!!
Jeff Gordon: Good one.
BrotherBri: Clearly, Klopf is not tough/strong/big enough to be an NFL tight end. BUT, if Bennett, Looker and Holt are all gone, is there any thought into turning Klopf into a tall possesion WR?
Jeff Gordon: Let's hope not.
magiardino: Gordo, I know how to start the rebuilding process... cut, trade, or sit Bulger, and get a scrambling quarterback in there who can buy time for his receivers, help out his line, and (hopefully) make some plays. I don't care who the Rams draft or trade or sign as a free agent... just make sure he can scramble. The Rams have no leadership on this offense (or defense for that matter), and a scrambling quarterback could be a decent move for what ails this team. (And I don't mean Micheal Vick!).
Jeff Gordon: That is one thing about the potential draft class of QBs -- lots of mobility there. That certainly does help a rebuilding team. A QB capable of buying WRs time is golden.
ramfanoncapecod: again bulger throwing off his back foot and not looking to the second receiver haslett is in trouble
Jeff Gordon: Lots of locking in on WRs. Other teams are seeing that, as you can tell by the extra DBs and LBs swarming to the passing lanes.
Rams Endzone: I'm so lonely. I felt a few balls pass over my head as they went through the goal posts, but otherwise, I was left alone today. I would think that having Dane Looker as the focal point of the offense would give me so much more company, but to my surprise, it has not. Will you come visit me when you're done blogging?
Jeff Gordon: No, but I'll wave on my way out of the dome.
ceaser: Hi jeff thanks for the forum.A message to Chip Rosenbloom:what would your father do with this mess if he were alive today?Didn't anyone take notice that in all the years the ring of honor has been around during ms. Frontiere's reign she never once put her husbands name up there? How about putting Daniel F Reeves up there as well? Mark my words if Steve Rosenbloom had gotten that team instead of her we would have seen a few more super bowls.
Jeff Gordon: Well, maybe. But there aren't too many Art Rooneys out there, just waiting to be a great owner.
Rambling Wreck: Thanks for the forum, Jeff. It was great to actually see a competitive team on the field this week. It is painfully obvious that the rookie receivers and Marc Bulger are not in sync. After so many years of Bruce and Holt in their prime, with guys like Az, Curtis and McDonald who knew all the routes, sets and had the timing down watching rookies and vets coming off injury can be tough.
Next year with some modifications could be pretty pleasant. If I were King, I would really go after the Cardinals' A. Boldin in a big way this offseason in free-agency. I'd draft Ray Maualuga with our top pick, and use the others on selecting a qb to groom quickly and big offensive linemen. The front office should explore how badly the Eagles want to part with Donavan McNabb, and offer them Bulger and a middle draft pick. We need a wide body run stopper on the d-line to go with our young and developing group that has really progressed this year.
Yes, Marc Bulger did not shine today, but coming off a concussion and working with new guys in the backfield and receiving corps it certainly was all his fault. Thanks for your time.
Jeff Gordon: If Boldin can turn that frown upside down, I see Arizona satisfying his thirst for top dollar. Any WR of Anquan's ilk would out St. Louis about 30th on his list of would-be employers.
joe passamonte: okay, call me superstitious.....the rams have never replicated the complete success of 99 when they wore the old blue and bright gold unies! ever since they went to the new colors its been a struggle....bring em back for good! now, if thats all that was neccessary to fix it all, wouldnt it be great?
Jeff Gordon: Yes, that would be great. And then I could wear my old school Tony Banks replica jersey without looking stupid.
Roanoke: Can't wait for the promise (hype) of the offseason and the proclamations regarding our weak division and therefore great chances for making the playoffs. Next year, try to keep your stories grounded in the reality of the RAMS of '07-'08 and not '00 to '01. There's not enough talent and there won't be enough next year either.
Jeff Gordon: Actually, the Rams had the talent to bid for a playoff berth this season. That is the really sad part about all this. The Rams had to work to become this bad.
Son_Dee: Jeff,
Just wanted to point out that since the Cowboys game the Rams have scored a whopping THREE Touchdowns in SIX games (and one of those TDs was in garbage time vs. the Niners).
There are many excuses (injuries), there are many reasons (play calling) but there's been one consistant - Marc Bulger.
His play has been inexcusable, especially today. Everyone else on offense did their part.
I will add that I'll agree with the fans. Haslett not going for it on 4th and 1 was defeatest play calling. We're a 2 win team. Yes we got the ball back but there are sometimes when you need to prove that, as a team, you CAN gain 3 feet.
Jeff Gordon: Can't argue at all.
likemike47: to compete for the quarterback job. do you think matt cassell would be too high priced.
Jeff Gordon: He wants Aaron Rodgers money and the No. 1 job coming into camp. If the Rams can't offer that, they can't get in the bidding.
Ray: The Dolphins are a much improved outfit, to be sure. My question is: can the Rams turn it around in one year, too? Was Miami as hapless last year as the Rams are this year, or were last year, or the year before....
Nevermind.
Thanks, Jeff.
Jeff Gordon: Let's see who is running this team in January or February. Then we can set a real timeline.
Jim (Santa Cruz, CA): Hi Gordo,
At least the Rams showed up and actually played football. I still think Haslett's got to go. He and Bulger must be sent packing. Three interceptions!!! The Rams defense week in and week out are trying their best and today they played beyond their abilities only to have Bulger give up the game again. One question, with about 3 minutes left, down by 4 with Jackson having a great rushing game, why did Haslett kick the ball? Jackson could have gotten that one yard. If he not, we would not have been in any worse shape. Instead, we give them the ball. They eat the clock and force us to use our time-outs. That is Haslett decision making. It is stupid. Will the Rams sig Michael Vick? I hope so with Ray Lewis too.
Jeff Gordon: Ray Lewis won't leave Baltimore for a team like this. Even if Rex Ryan came here, that would be a tough sell -- even though they are very close. As for Vick, no.
virginiatom: Gordo, if Bulger as the quarterback next year isn't capable of winning games anymore, when do you draft the quarterback? What is the point of having someone in the back field who isn't going to get it done. Atlanta and Baltimore are excellent examples of drafting a franchise quarterback and building around them. If a franchise quarterback is sitting there at the Rams first pick, why not grab him? Of course it would be a work in progress, but at least you have the most important part of the team at that point to build around.
Jeff Gordon: Ryan was a great pick for Atlanta. I like Flacco's mobility, but he wouldn't make a quick impact for many NFL teams. And history tells you that far more of these top picks need a LOT of time to develop. Most QBs that go to bad teams and get rushed end up failing.
Don: The excitement for this season will be AFTER the season is over. What will Chip do with the front office? Who will be the coach? What players will still be here? Is Bulger too ashamed to pick up his paycheck?
Jeff Gordon: Marc is OK picking up his check. He's just fine with that.
Woodstock: Gordo,
Will Chip give Haslett credit for a win with this one since they came close. If so, only one more "win" to go!
Jeff Gordon: This WAS a plus for Jim, since the bar is apparently set really, really low.
Roanoke: Is it Saunder's playcalling or just Bulger's ineptitude?
Jeff Gordon: Today, I'd put it on Bulger and note that these TEs aren't the best ever.
virginiatom: When you say the Rams need franchise leadership changes next year, who exactly do you think needs to go and who stays?
Jeff Gordon: The new team president would assess the whole football operation and proceed accordingly. The head coach, the personnel guy/GM, the coordinators -- the dominoes would fall once the new guy takes over.
If the team doesn't find a strong new leader, then it will suffer more of the same.
chaos3430: I thought Vobora played a pretty good game. Bulger went out of his way to lose this one. Can't we cut him on June 1st, and spread his cap hit over two years, try and sign Cassel or trade a third or less for Anderson, then spend a second on one of the many QB's that should slip out of the first round like Colt McCoy, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow or even Nate Davis later in the draft to develop?
Anderson is signed short term, or we can try and get Cassel for a lucrative three year deal while we develop a QB for the future.
Jeff Gordon: Sounds like a plan that most Rams fans would buy into.
Roanoke: Are there 2 more wins on Haslet's schedule? Or is he going Linehan's route?
Jeff Gordon: Why can't this team beat the 49ers and Seahawks at home? If the Rams can't win two more games, then how can the staff survive?
Ozy Rams Fan: Gordo,
Nice to see Larry back posting, I guess he has lots of freetime now that he doesn't have a job in football.
Bulger was once a very QB under Nartz, how could he have degraded so badly ?
Jeff Gordon: Repeated blows to the head. Post-concussion syndrome. Multiple rib fractures.
Jeff Wade: Well, Jeff as soon as I saw the Rams march down the field and kick 3 I thought here we go again. While the Rams defense is not very good to say the least, you can't waste the effort they gave us today. Thanks Orlando, as for Jackson he is still Mr. Potential, plenty of yards rushing between the 20's but where is his paydirt? I still would like to see Trent be able to start for a few games to see if he has anything left, can't tell by 1 spot start.
Jeff Gordon: We've seen Trent. There is nothing left.
The Football Used Today: Ouch- that hurt when Kloppenstein tried to catch me. What are that guy's hands made of anyway? Stone?
Jeff Gordon: Stone, or a synthetic stone substitute.
BrotherBri: Chiefs up 10-3 at the half .... WOOHOOO!!
While I don't expect a lot of difference-makers to be free agents this offseason (the Titans HAVE to re-sign Haynesworth, don't they?), will there be anything close to an ideal MLB or SS available for the Rams to sign?
Jeff Gordon: Too soon to tell, but Devaney must be scouring rosters in search of a fourth LB stuck on a real good team, a guy with the potential to grow here. The Rams used to find those guys.
Roanoke: In the NFL, it's not that difficult to hang around into December with the hope of making the playoffs. But for the RAMS, we know our doomsville fate early on despite playing in the NFC West.
Jeff Gordon: And that made this failure all the more painful for fans. Falling out of THIS race was hard.
ramincal: I have been a ram fan since the days of the fearsome foursome in blue and white. I still cheer them on which there hasn't been too much. Just waiting for them to come back to L.A. Wherever they are at, they need to have a young quarterback in training that can take over because with the offensive line that we have, we need a quarterback that can move.
Jeff Gordon: The line was fine today. Mobility is always a good think for NFL QBs, along with pocket presence. Bulger has neither right now.
carlosf: Jeff, Does the Owners requirement of 2 more wins for Haslett to get consideration, have anything to do with the teams performance today? Also does this limit some of the exposure Haslett is willing to give some back-ups (i.e. giving some of the younger guys more PT to see what they can offer)?
Jeff Gordon: Haslett is playing all the kids who have earned the look. He is not holding anybody back.
randycentorani: I am not a Bulger fan...I never have liked him.....But you put Bulger in another uniform.....as long as its not Oakland or Cincinnati....and hes a winner.....we all hated Gus Ferrotte and look at what is happening in Minnesota.....
I have no Idea what its gonna take to fix this team....but I hope we get a George Steinbrenner for an owner.....someone that will do what it takes to put a winner on the field......
Thanks Gordo
Jeff Gordon: Steinbrenner, in his prime, would have gotten killed in this NFL. The salary cap rules would eat him up. He's spend big, dump guys on a whim and then have no cap room forever.
All NFL owners are rich and ambitious. The savvy owners win.
CoachRon: Gordo,
One positive Bulger note: he made a tackle following his INT and he did not injure himself while doing so! See, he is coachable!
Jeff Gordon: Maybe he can play safety.
RamsFan57: I think Haslett should play Brock Berlin the rest of the way to see what he can do. It's only 4 games, but they need something more than they've got to gauge his potential for the future. We already know what the other 2 can and can't do.
What do you think?
Jeff Gordon: I don't know about four games, but a half here or there might be instructive.
lancegoldbergpainting: Jeff,
What do you mean "we shouldn't draft a QB in the first round because
he will cost too much money"? EVERY top pick will cost a fortune
no matter what the position !!!
Are you saying the Rams wouldn't be much better with Matt Ryan right now?
Jeff Gordon: The Rams would have a few more wins with Ryan, who would have come off the bench at some point to relief Bulger. But that would have been a LOT of cap dollars to tie up into one position.
smackuprams: why would you say shaw might have a great say, when help with this mess...would chip still trust his judgement??
Jeff Gordon: Chip knows very little about the NFL. Shaw is his trusted aide. Expect John to have lots of advice for Chip. Stan Kroenke will have a say, too.
adp187: Just was wondering, how much of this crappy offense is Saunders? To me Saunders makes a lot of questionable play calls and at times is predictable kinda like LINNY. Look there were a lot of dropped balls and Bulger made some bad reads, we got guys running wrong routes... the list goes on. I feel that Saunders needs to go his Redzone Offensesive play calling is horrible. I dont think wever ever thrown on 1st down in the redzone just very predictable. If Haz stays which it looks like he will I want Saunders gone, he was a lot of hype, I want a young creative offensive line. P.S. to the Bulger Haters heres here to stay for COUPLE YEARS, get used to it. This was a bad game by him but he takes way to much heat from the D and from fans. Theu give him all this money and hes got all rookie wide recivers(for the most Part) and a crappy line. He had an off day but hes here to stay
Jeff Gordon: The 22.2 passer rating is on the QB, not the coordinator. Al wasn't great today, but Marc was worse.
Charlie: Do you think that Dane Looker will be back next season? He was solid in the game today and our leading receiver. The guy is a class act and a good role model for our younger receivers.
Jeff Gordon: He runs the routes as they are designed and he catches the ball. On this team, that is a plus.
LaughingLion: Gordo:
Can you explain why the Rams seem to feel The TWA/Ed Jones Dome is a bad stadium? It is not that old, it is domed - do they have to have a billion dollar venue?
Jeff Gordon: Dreadful atmosphere overall, wretched sound system, lack of natural lighting, substandard video boards, insufficient premium seating . . . some of these things can be improved to add years to the stadium's lifespan.
Eventually, though, domes will be obsolete in markets like this. Retractable roofs are in.
grimmsta642@yahoo.com: Gordo,
Realistically, I know we have some talent on this team. We have coaches (Saunders) who has a proven track record everywhere he's been for the most part. We have an interim head coach, who is a former Coach of the Year. We are being beaten in the most elementary aspects of the game consisistantly.
Maybe we don't have good enough teachers of the offensive line, defensive line, linebackers, d-backs, SPECIAL TEAMS. You would know better than I do about that. Are ANY of these coaches HIGHLY regarded teachers like a Hanifan or Gansz?
The players either aren't being TAUGHT/COACHED UP, or they just don't deserve to be in the NFL.. I think it's a combination of it all.. upgrade these assistants (no buddy system). That's ONE good thing Linehan did. He brought in Haslett (though the results weren't great, whatever the reason).
Jeff Gordon: There are a few weak links on this staff, as is often the case. But Saunders, Haslett, Venturi, Ellard, Shea -- these are well-respected guys leading the group. These team has turned over a lot of assistant coaches over the years. As we've seen, they are seldom to blame for all that goes wrong.
beast39: If the rams draft Smith or Oher with their first round pick, will they move Pace to right tackle or release him
Jeff Gordon: There is a chance Pace could exit as a cap casualty. But having three OTs wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, given Pace's injury history and Barron's inconsistency.
Trades are rare in the NFL, but if the Rams actually developed a surplus, moving a starting OT for a nice return would be easy enough.
Charlie M: Jeff, I've been a loyal Bulger supporter since he took over, but after watching him these past two seasons I think it might be time to move on. Since the rams are rebuilding anyway do you think the Rams would cut or trade him? What will his contract allow us to do? He had plenty of time in the pocket today and it is obvious he is scared of getting hit. We need a QB with a more FIRE, bulger has NONE.
Also what are the chances of the rams drafting: Jeremy Maclin, Chase Coffman, or Colt McCoy?
Jeff Gordon: Interesting that McCoy is looking at the NFL now, after earlier pledging to stay another year. I like Colt, but I don't him falling to the second round if he comes out. Maclin is a great talent, but I see the Rams using high picks elsewhere. Coffman would be a nice second-round pick, to fix the red zone issue.
rams08fan: Jeff,
I am ready to be slammed for even offering this suggestion. If we need a scrambling QB, is there any chance we could get Michael Vick here for a look?
Jeff Gordon: Vick is a weird QB, once that makes you redo your offense. His inability to consistently use WRs downfield makes him a special case. Throw in all that rust and his other baggage and he would be no more than a candidate to back up.
RamFan503: Gordo
Thanks for putting in the time on this. I have been a ram fan for many years. As bad as this team is, I can't help but stay tuned. I hold out hope that this team makes that huge turn around we saw almost a decade ago.
My question is - Do you think there will be an ownership change soon that would pull out the stops in order to bring the Rams back to contention? If so, who do you see as real possibilities? How much interest is there out there and has this team yet reached the point of being a bargain basement purchase?
Jeff Gordon: There are no bargain basement purchases in the NFL. Chip can command top dollar. And if a guy with regional ties (Rush Limbaugh) doesn't step up to pay the going rate, then nobody could blame Chip for selling to the highest bidder.
If that happens, the team could be out of here in five or six years.
Bill R: Draft Sam Bradford (with the first rd pick) or Stafford (with 2d rd pick) if available (Not Stafford with 1st - to high).
Switch to a 3 - 4 Defense (move Carriker to DE), draft a Langford (Dolphin rooke DE) with 3rd round pick. The guy Panel Eghoh (6-4 from Stanford) would be good pick for that.
Try to get a big MLB with the 1st or 2d rounder (whatever the available QB situation evolves to). If Bradford or Stafford not available, wait on QB until next year (see if a QB comes loose on waivers or cheap FA). Brock Berlin is not the choice, he will not lead to any championships.
This is a 2-3 year project. Start at the next draft.
BR
Jeff Gordon: Long and Carriker might be good 3-4 DEs, but then you would need two playmaking OLBs in addition to more muscle inside. Maybe Witherspoon could be one of these OLBs. Haslett would consider the 3-4 if stays, since Little may be done.
DWIGHT: hey gordo, what happened to the rams attacking #41 on miami.we was burning him on all pass plays directed at him? Bulger seems to lock on his recievers especially on Holin the red zone.
Jeff Gordon: Haslett had the guy before (in New Orleans) and he was pleasantly surprised to see him playing so much. Joey had been out of the league for a while, for a reason.
Bart Johnson: The main thing, though, is that we got rid of that Martz guy. Couldn't manage his timeouts. No good with the challenge flag. No run-pass balance. We're not burdened with any of those problems now, see, so I'm thinking the future looks bright.
Jeff Gordon: Martz blew himself up here as head coach and doomed the team to mediocrity with numerous draft blunders. Don't weep for him.
James M: Gordo-
the Dolphins made a turnaround this season thanks in-part to the QB play of free agent acquisition Chad Pennington. What QB's (besides Matt Cassell, obviously) could the Rams bring in during the offseason via free agency to compete with Bulger?
Jeff Gordon: There will other Pennington types out there as teams decide what to do at QB. Remember, though, the Dolphins are a solid team. They don't ask Chad to do much.
ramfanoncapecod: is roanaoke the only one to get a response?
Jeff Gordon: No. I have responded for more than 150 posts so far.
James M: Why not rest Bulger for the rest of the season, let him get healthy, and then compete for a job next year? Is there really a feeling that we need to be starting this guy right now?
Jeff Gordon: Haslett is trying to win games. If he starts Marc, it's because he believes Marc is better than Green or Berlin. Jim doesn't have the luxury of coaching for next year.
Lawarence Marmie: Why did lovie smith go into a prevent at the end of the Superbowl against the Patriots? God, I hate that guy.
Jeff Gordon: A lot went wrong in that game, including veterans missing open-field tackles and veterans on offense spitting up the football. Execution was a huge problem.
niteshiftbluez: How likely is it that Bulger can regroup a la Warner and get over his shell shocks this off season, Gordo? I still kinda believe in the guy.
Jeff Gordon: That will take some doing. He is a shell of his former self right now.
Lawarence Marmie: Any chance that Klopenstein replaces Chavous at safety? They both have similiar catching ability.
Jeff Gordon: Don't forget Fakhir Brown. You have to hand it to him, literally.
Lawarence Marmie: Gordo,
Any chance the Rams draft a tight end in the first round?
Jeff Gordon: Rim shot! On that note, we will call off the jam. Have a good night.
See you next time.
