On November 18, 2011 Wentzville's Holt High School performed "Footloose", a musical written by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie. Ren, an ordinary Chicago teenager, dances at his last visit to a nightclub before moving to the town of Bomont, Illinois. In Bomont, dancing is strictly prohibited due to a terrible incident that killed 4 teenagers, one of which was the town reverend's son. Ren defies the town authorities and initiates a plan to throw a school dance. Ren obviously encounters roadblocks in his plan to abolish the strange and unusual law. The performance given by Holt High School was a spectacle to behold, and it kept the audience dancing in their seats.
Ren McCormack (Cody Cole) is the protagonist and hero of the musical. Cole's energy onstage and obvious dance training provided a strong male lead to the production. When he opened his mouth to sing, every note was pitch perfect. There were times where some words and lyrics were hard to understand due to lack of annunciation, but he made up for it with his believable acting. Ms. Ariel Moore (Lara Flanders) played Cole's opposite. Ariel is the rebellious daughter of Reverend Shaw Moore (Nathan Hinds) and goes against his wishes, dating the town bad boy, breaking curfew, and constantly lying to her parents. Flanders exhibited outstanding emotion which made her character believable. However, there were times where it seemed that she was reciting her lines and lyrics.
Reverend Shaw Moore (Nathan Hinds) and his wife, Vi Moore (Abigail Alysmeyer) stole the show with their outstanding chemistry and beautiful voices. When onstage together, they played off of each other and created a relationship that of a real couple. Alysmeyer's solo in "Can You Find It in Your Heart?" stole the hearts of the audience and made her a favorite. Hinds' reprise of the same song added the male reciprocal, which in turn proved to be just as enchanting.
The Teens and Citizens of Bomont proved to be some of the most entertaining members of the cast. None seemed to be lacking energy, and most of the difficult and complex dance moves were executed with the utmost precision. Chorus members Hali Pace, Christopher Geerling, and Kaitlin Bishop caught the attention of the viewers because of their charisma, believable acting, and perfectly-timed reactions to the dialogue.
The performance displayed at Wentzville's Holt High School was a marvel and displayed theatre at its finest.
