Two versatile theater artists, Deanna Jent and Andrea Frye, received recognition for their achievements with multiple nominations in the 2011 Kevin Kline Awards.
The nominations were announced at a reception Monday night. The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony at the Loretto-Hilton Center on April 2.
Jent was nominated as outstanding director of a musical for "Godspell." Two plays that she wrote, a stage adaptation of the C. S. Lewis fantasy "Till We Have Faces" (which she also directed) and "Falling," a drama about a family dealing with autism, were nominated for outstanding new play or musical. All three were produced at Mustard Seed Theatre, where Jent is artistic director.
Frye also was nominated as outstanding director of a musical, for the folk-inflected "Black Pearl Sings!" at the Black Rep. Her other nomination, for outstanding lead actress in a play, recognizes her performance in "Ruined" as the canny owner of Congolese bar and brothel. "Ruined" was a Black Rep production, too.
Multiple nominations also went to actress Linda Kennedy, actor Gary Wayne Barker, choreographer Dana Lewis, costume designer Dorothy Marshall Englis, lighting designer Matthew McCarthy, set designer Scott C. Neale and sound designer Rusty Wandall.
The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis once again received the largest number of nominations, 28 — or 31, if you include the three nominations for its touring troupe, the Imaginary Theatre Company.
Other theaters also accrued double-digit nominations: 18 for the Muny, 17 for Stages St. Louis, 14 for the New Jewish Theatre, 12 for the Black Rep and 10 for Mustard Seed.
The awards are named for Kevin Kline, the Tony- and Oscar-winning actor who grew up in Clayton. Honoring excellence in St. Louis professional theater, they are presented by the Professional Theatre Council of St. Louis.
