The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2012-13 season, featuring composers from A (John Adams) to Z (Alexander Zemlinsky) and a wide range of soloists, from members of the orchestra to internationally renowned artists.
The season begins with a four-city European tour, the first led by music director David Robertson, and concludes with the June annual conference of the League of American Orchestras, hosted by the SLSO for the first time in a half-century.
Orchestra president and CEO Fred Bronstein said that the upcoming season is about “balance, creativity, accessibility and artistic growth.” He expects to continue the success of the “Live at Powell Hall” pops series, as well as increasing ticket revenues and attendance at all of the SLSO’s offerings. “I think we’ve really hit a home run with this season’s plans,” he said.
Next year’s season has a connecting Viennese focus, with composers from Mozart and Beethoven to Richard Strauss and Alban Berg. There’s a jazz subtext, audible in both this season’s gala – starring trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center – and “Live,” with trumpeter Chris Botti and sax player Kenny G.
Opening night, Sept. 28, features pianist Emanuel Ax and Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.” The regular subscription concert series ends the weekend of May 9 through 12 with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, “Choral.”
In between comes new music, including works by Thomas Adès and Cindy McTee, and an assortment of orchestral favorites: Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, all-Tchaikovsky and all-Mozart evenings and Holst’s “The Planets,” led by conductor laureate Leonard Slatkin.
Other guest conductors include Nicholas McGegan, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jun Märkl, Gilbert Varga and Sir Andrew Davis. Among the soloists are soprano Christine Brewer, mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, violinists Gil Shaham and James Ehnes, and pianists Radu Lupu, Yefim Bronfman and Peter Serkin.
“Live at Powell Hall” will make several trips to the movies, with the orchestra accompanying “The Wizard of Oz.” "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and “The Matrix.” Circus Flora returns with a new Christmas program.
For Robertson, anticipating his eighth season with the orchestra, “It’s particularly exciting to be able to share what the orchestra and I have come to make together in the last few years. There’s just a whole unified approach to way one makes music, a hallmark of what one wants to have in an orchestra of a world-class level.”
