You could buy art from the 160 artists appearing at the St. Louis Art Fair, consistently ranked among the nation's best. Or you could make your own at the fair's adults-only Art Studio on North Meramec. The studio is open from 6 to 10 p.m. today and Saturday. Other Art Fair highlights include storytelling, a children's "Creative Castle" and gourmet dishes from local restaurants. Teddy Presberg, MADCO, Lamar Harris and Songs of Africa Ensemble are among the scheduled performers. Gina Alvarez, printmaker and education director of the St. Louis Artists' Guild, talked about the Art Studio.
• What is the St. Louis Artists' Guild going to teach? There's going to be a printing press, and visitors are going to do lino cuts on site, ink it up and print an image on site to take home. We'll explain every step of the process.
• Why do you love printmaking? What makes printmaking so great is that you can get lost in the materials. It is a lot like cooking in that there are elements and steps only we don't have a precise recipe you have to follow. I think it's a lot less intimidating than drawing on a piece of paper.
• But isn't it dangerous? It's like cutting a potato. And there will be plenty of people there to show you the method to our madness.
