The art heist remains unsolved, but that's not stopping Lindenwood University in Belleville from replacing the 9-foot-tall sculpture that vanished from its campus last month.
The school said Wednesday that it plans to replace the stolen artwork with a new piece by the same artist, Brother Mel Meyer of Kirkwood.
The new sculpture — along with a check to pay for it, a donation from attorney Garrett Reuter — was presented at a ceremony at Vianney High School in Kirkwood. Meyer's art studio is located on the campus there.
Last month, Meyer's "The Glass Tower" was stolen from its concrete pad outside the student center in Belleville. The piece had been installed in May.
Two thieves, recorded on security cameras, cut or loosened the four metal bolts securing the sculpture and carried it off, one man in front and one in back. School officials and authorities speculated the thieves targeted the artwork because they wanted scrap metal or desired a nice piece of art.
Undeterred, the university plans to install the new sculpture on the same site.
