What does one wear for literary speed-dating?

Nikki Furrer of Pudd'nhead Books emails a suggestion: "Bangs. Glasses. Layers. Scarves. These are hot nerds, so stylish yet comfortable is the typical dress code for this group."

Steven Smith, owner of the Royale, the setting for the event, suggests "sunglasses and a wig."

The restaurant-bar is fairly dim, and the event starts at 9 p.m. on the outdoor patio. So, a disguise is probably unnecessary for what is probably the city's first attempt at speedy matchmaking for book lovers.

"It's not about what you've read, but what you think about it, how it affects you, what you've learned," says Furr, the organizer with the St. Louis Independent Bookstore Alliance.

Smith jokes that the city needs literary speed-dating so "smart people who like to read need to meet each other and procreate if we have any hope of a literate world."

All 15 slots for women have been filled. Openings for single men are still available, and bystanders are welcome. So far, participants range from their 20s to 40s, Furrer says.

Men and women will chat in five-minute sessions June 12 at the Royale, 3132 South Kingshighway and bystanders are welcome. (A similar event is in the works for gays and lesbians.)

Organizers urge participants to "come early for liquid courage." The alliance says an improv player, George Malich, is lined up to "keep things moving smoothly and make sure that even if you don't find a love match, you'll still have a blast."
