Nothing beats a good piece of fried chicken. But we've already been there, done that, licked our fingers.
So what about those much-hyped chicken sandwiches and entrees offered at the drive-thru? Can't watch TV without seeing a plug for the latest and greatest in portable poultry.
That's why Evan "The Beer Guy" Benn and yours truly -- with no small risk to our cardiovascular systems and no small suspicion that editors may be trying to whack us through dietary means -- will be trying our usual six dishes and then picking the one we liked best.
We will print the results (with our usual dose of perceptive and witty comments) in the Friday, July 23 edition of Go!
In previous stories, we've chowed down and weighed in on toasted ravioli, ice cream, fried chicken, barbecued ribs and pizza. This time, Beer Guy Benn runs down the heavy half-dozen we'll be tackling:
* KFC Double Down: Two pieces of fried boneless chicken serve as the "bun," with bacon, pepper jack cheese and a mayo-based "Colonel's Sauce." Released this spring, it's been a huge hit.
* Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Deluxe: A "hand-battered" piece of boneless chicken with pepper jack and pickle chips. Released last month, with a special release for those who "pre-reserved" online. The iPad of fast food.
* Hardee's Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders: The newest item from the St. Louis chain debuted this month. The claim is the chicken is cooked at each restaurant, using buttermilk and egg batter.
* Wendy's Spicy Chipotle Boneless Wings: Introduced last year as part of the chain's "It's waaaay better than fast food" campaign.
* Jack in the Box Really Big Chicken Sandwich: Two fried chicken patties topped with cheese, bacon and mayo on a bun.
* Taco Bell Fresco Burrito Supreme Chicken: A "detox" dose from the "Drive-Thru Diet" menu. The burrito comes with grilled chicken, salsa and lettuce.
Help us out by voting for the one you like the best and tell us why in the "comments" section. Also, feel free to let us know if we missed any "must-try" item, as long as it's chicken and it's from a fast-food joint.
And who knows, maybe we can fit in a stop at "Taco Town."
