A specialty food shop is set to open next month on Washington Avenue downtown.
St. Louis Popcorn Co. will have at least 10 varieties of gourmet popcorn for sale at 1300 Washington Avenue. All will be made fresh on-site, owner Daraisha Cosby says.
"Nothing pre-packaged," she says. "You're going to be able to smell it on the street when we're popping."
Cosby, whose background is in marketing, says she's a fan of Chicago's famous Garrett Popcorn and makes a stop at its popular Michigan Avenue store whenever she's in the Windy City. In fact, she plans to include a "Chicago mix," a salty-sweet blend of cheese and caramel popcorn that Garrett's made famous, among her offerings.
"This is my baby," she says of the independent St. Louis Popcorn Co. "Popcorn is something fun, something everyone likes. Plus, it's a good way for me to help nonprofits and give back to some of the businesses I've worked with over the years on the marketing side of things."
Could St. Louis be headed toward a popcorn revolution? A franchise of the Colorado-based Doc Popcorn recently opened in South County Center, and the St. Louis Business Journal reports that the franchise owner hopes to open nine other area locations in the next few years.
