The world-class True/False documentary film festival, March 1-4 in Columbia, Mo., has announced the recipient of its annual True Vision award for excellence: Russian director Victor Kossakovsky.
Although he's less well-known to American audiences than previous recipients, such as Oscar winners Alex Gibney ("Taxi to the Dark Side") and James Marsh ("Man on Wire"), Kossakovsky is a rising star on the international doc circuit. His visit to the States is being sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Kossakovsky's latest film, Viva las Antipodas! is a topsy-turvy travelogue that juxtaposes images from places that are on opposite sides of the earth from each other: Spain and New Zealand, Chile and Russia, Argentina and China, Hawaii and Botswana.
Since 2004, the rapidly growing True/False has celebrated the blurry line between fact and fiction in documentary film. Perhaps this year it could change its name to Pravda/Nyet.
The festival will announce its complete lineup on Wed., Feb 8. As of this writing, passes are still available.
