Ryan Gosling getaway driver in "Drive"

MOVIES

"The Big Year" TWO STARS (PG; 1:40) • In a low-key comedy, Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson compete in a yearlong contest to rack up sightings of rare birds. Some of the remote locations are scenic, but there's surprisingly little information about birds and not enough competitive tension to uncage the funny fellows. (Joe Williams)

"Drive" THREE STARS (R; 1:40) • Ryan Gosling is in existential-loner mode as a Hollywood stuntman who doubles as a getaway driver. Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn evokes violent '80s action flicks with self-conscious style, and he's got a fine cast that includes Albert Brooks as a sympathetic villain and Carey Mulligan as the girl. (JW)

"The Thing" TWO AND A HALF STARS (R; 1:43) • In a prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 remake of a 1951 horror flick, researchers at the South Pole encounter an alien that can take human form, and no one escapes suspicion of being the threat. With updated effects and a female protagonist (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), it's a solid sci-fi/horror hybrid, but in the end this iceman doesn't deliver enough to chew on. (JW)

"To Kill a Mockingbird" (PG; 2:09) • For the 50th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD editions, the beloved classic about a small-town lawyer (Gregory Peck), his inquisitive daughter (Mary Badham) and a mysterious neighbor (Robert Duvall) has been enhanced with three hours of bonus footage. It includes feature-length documentaries on the making of the film and the career of Gregory Peck, filmmaker commentaries, a copy of Peck's shooting script and much more. (JW)
