MOVIES
"J. Edgar" TWO STARS (R; 2:17) • As directed by Clint Eastwood, scripted by Dustin Lance Black ("Milk") and enacted by Leonardo DiCaprio, this long, slow biography of the longtime director of the FBI is more interested in Hoover's personal life than political legacy. That means dwelling on his bromance with Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer) and skirting the implications of their long war on civil liberties. (Joe Williams)
"Martha Marcy May Marlene" THREE STARS (R; 2:00) • An emotionally needy young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) who escapes a back-to-nature cult headed by a charismatic, Charles Manson-like leader (John Hakwes) takes refuge with her judgmental, yuppie sister (Sarah Paulson). This methodical Sundance hit is slyly scary, with a paranoid ending that is rife for debate. (JW)
"Tower Heist" TWO STARS (PG-13; 1:44) • High-rise manager Ben Stiller enlists streetwise thief Eddie Murphy to rob the gazillionaire (Alan Alda) who stole employees' pensions. This caper comedy from hack director Brett Ratner is dull and nonsensical, but it's amusing to watch Murphy in "48 Hours" mode. (JW)
"The Way" THREE STARS (PG-13; 1:55) • Martin Sheen stars in this drama about a man who embarks on a spiritual journey in honor of his dead son. Not a lot happens, but the acting is first-rate, including a strong performance from Deborah Kara Unger as a fellow traveler. Written and directed by Sheen's son Emilio Estevez. (Calvin Wilson)
