"The Rum Diary" THREE STARS (R; 1:50) • A solid effort, with Johnny Depp starring as a journalist who finds adventure, alcohol and sex while trying to be a crusading reporter in Puerto Rico in 1960. Based on Hunter S. Thompson's first novel, it roughly documents what caused Thompson to become "Doctor Gonzo." (Joe Holleman)

"Take Shelter" THREE AND A HALF STARS (R; 2:00) • Haunted by dreams of impending doom, a small-town husband and father (Michael Shannon) squanders his savings to build a fall-out shelter for his wife (Jessica Chastain) and deaf daughter (Tova Stewart). Shannon's powerfully imploded performance ignites one of the best films of 2011. (JW)
