Remember record stores? They're still here.
But the reality is that record stores, those outmoded places where we used to buy our music, are about as yesterday as MySpace.
Now that music is just a few clicks away thanks to iTunes, most people don't even look up from their laptops to buy Justin Bieber's latest release.
And for people who don't download music, big-box retailers such as Walmart and Best Buy serve as popular music-buying destinations.
But for purists, it's still about record stores, which offer a more communal and music-centric experience.
Record stores will get special recognition Saturday during Record Store Day, which was begun in 2007. It's "the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music," its mission statement says.
Artists have jumped aboard the celebration, releasing music exclusively to indie record stores for the occasion. This year, those acts range from classic names such as Bruce Springsteen, Buddy Guy, Beastie Boys, Tom Waits and R.E.M. to edgy favorites such as Julian Casablancas, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Owl City, Weezer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ani DiFranco, TV on the Radio, Gorillaz and Queens of the Stone Age (the full list is at recordstoreday.com).
In addition to carrying special products, participating record stores often feature performances, sales and more.
