When Lorrie Morgan and Pam Tillis took the stage together, they warned the audience early that they could only play for an hour since they had another show later on Friday night.
They sang for just less than that but left the fans at Lumière Theater feeling like they had been treated to a personal concert in their own living rooms.
Tillis and Morgan opened with a duet of Joni Mitchell's classic "Both Sides Now" before they moved into a "my hit, her hit" rotation of "Watch Me" from Morgan, "Shake the Sugar Tree" from Tillis, "Except for Monday" from Morgan and "Queen of Denial" from Tillis.
Morgan, in a fitted white top and embellished jeans, and Tillis, in a spangly metallic shirt and embellished jeans, looked like country royalty — fitting as they moved into a medley of two songs made famous by their fathers, "Candy Kisses" and "Burning Memories." Maybe it's all the mash-ups we've heard on "Glee," but a mix of two songs into one never sounded so good.
They also talked about growing up backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and idolizing singers like Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.
This wasn't name-dropping; it was just two friends talking about their lives. (Tillis got big laughs when she said she wanted to grow up to be like Dolly Parton, and looking pointedly at her chest noted that she didn't make it. Morgan's retort: "You can change that.")
Morgan, who wrote all the material on her newest album, asked the crowd if they had taken their antidepressants before she launched into a new song, "Mirror, Mirror." Sad, yes, but lovely — let's hope country radio gives it a little airplay.
After that, it was back to the hits rotation of "Mi Vida Loca," "I Didn't Know My Own Strength," "Maybe It Was Memphis" and — to the night's biggest ovation — "Something in Red."
While that's a Morgan hit, they had Tillis sing the 'something in blue" verse, and she put her heart and soul into it. You could hear the sorrow in "We once were hot lovers, now we're more like friends."
They closed the night with the rollicking gospel tune "Operator," to a big ovation.
