ST. LOUIS • The Black Rep's "Black Nativity: A Holiday Celebration" is two fantastic shows for the price of one: an imaginative retelling of the Nativity story in the first act, and an exuberant, nightclub-style revue in the second. That means you get to hear "Joy to the World," but also "Baby, It's Cold Outside." On Saturday evening, the program attracted more than 100 people.

Director Ron Himes captures the spirit of the season with a blend of engaging songs, family-friendly humor and sheer showmanship. The show also benefits from the contributions of choreographer Alicia Gbaho and musical director Kyle Kelley.

The story of Jesus and his birth is told cleverly yet reverentially, with African folk songs included in the eclectic score, and dance intermingled with song. But arguably, the second act of "Black Nativity" is even more entertaining. With enough tunes to fill a very big stocking - including such favorites as "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," "My Favorite Things" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" - this nightclub has no smoke but plenty of heat.

The terrific ensemble has a thoroughly delightful way with the songs. Particularly memorable is a rendition of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" that brings to mind the legendary Temptations at their best. But that's just one example of the show's brilliant embrace of gospel, blues and R&B influences. There's an Aretha Franklin vibe to "Silver Bells," and B.B. King would likely approve of the bluesy take on "Merry Christmas Baby."

At almost three hours long, including intermission, "Black Nativity" risks being too much of a good thing. As good as the material is, the show might have benefited from some editing. But these days, there's something to be said for giving an audience its money's worth.
