Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has a mean way of whipping her hair.

At her concert Tuesday night at the Peabody Opera House, she perfected the act of taking her now-red cascading locks and throwing them here and there, risking whiplash, as she darted in and out of teen-friendly pop-dance songs.

But what about her actual performance? Let's just say she could find a whole new career selling shampoo.

The Disney TV star and pop singer, who was in rehab last year for an eating disorder and self-injury, is back and in fighting shape for her new tour.

She wasn't shy about addressing her personal issues with the audience after taking to the stage with "All Night Long" from her latest album, "Unbroken." She thanked fans for sticking with her.

Her fan base of teenage girls responded as only they could - with an outpouring of high-pitched screams.

Lovato's near 90-minute concert came off even less memorable than Selena Gomez's at the Fox Theatre this year. It brought nothing particularly fresh or interesting to the table save for her weathering through her personal issues.

The concert was typical of a small-scale pop diva show with the expected trimmings: energetic dancers, who at one point wore cut-out disco balls on their heads; costume changes; and a series of set pieces that included Lovato performing inside a cage-like apparatus and an acoustic portion focusing on older songs.

"Hold Up" started with Lovato and one of her dancers sitting in a mock car and ended with a dance routine involving automatic weapons.

"Got Dynamite," "Who's That Boy," "My Love is Like a Star," "Fix a Heart," "Lightweight" and her hit "Skyscraper" were among the songs that made the show's song list, though they were forgettable.

The same might not be said about her decent version of "Moves Like Jagger."

Florida power pop band We the Kings, whose latest album is "Sunshine State of Mind," opened the concert with listenable tunes such as latest single "Say You Like Me." Scrappy lead singer Travis Clark said he wishes there were a way he could make out with everyone in the audience to thank them for their support.
