The Firebird's popular Undercover Weekend commences tomorrow and should be bigger than ever. The covers-only series is becoming a local institution and even has it's own website and Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Local power trio Blind Eyes will offer their take on Fleetwood Mac Friday night at 11 p.m. Other notables that night include Sleepy Kitty covering Pavement and Troubadour Dali rocking Queens of The Stone Age to close out the night. Check out the full lineup (three nights over two weekends) here.
I'm especially looking forward to Sept. 17 when we get to hear local bands do Pearl Jam, R.E.M., The Doors and Pat Benatar. Fun!
When not covering Fleetwood Mac, the Blind Eyes play garage pop in the vein of the Jam with crunchy guitars and potent vocal harmonies. Their debut LP, Modernity, was one of the best local releases of 2009.
I spoke with vocalist/guitarist Seth Porter a few days back.
RC: Why did you choose Fleetwood Mac for undercover weekend?
SP: It's pretty much the polar opposite of our sound - they are as polished as you can get. But that's kind of the heart of Undercover Weekend. It's been fun to tackle the songs. We're a three piece, so we had to put a different spin on the songs. Lindsey Buckingham probably has one of the most unique guitar playing styles. I am an intermediate guitar player so I had to change some of the arrangements a little.
RC: Is it a guilty pleasure to be allowed to play Fleetwood Mac on a stage like the Firebird?
SP: I don't know if it's a guilty pleasure, but its a lot of fun. The songs are over 30 years old, so there's a lot of distance now. In 2010, you don't have to deal with the same baggage as back then. At the time, I'm sure the punk and metal kids wouldn't have anything to do with Fleetwood Mac, but all that stuff washes away over time.
