Sacramento's !!! captivated a LouFest crowd on a day of hits and misses music-wise.
The day started out super sunny but lacking the breezes of the day before. Austin's Ume were an early highlight, turning in groovin' Yeah Yeah Yeahs-like electric rock. From there, Lost in the Trees and The Low Anthem played chilled out sets that were a little lacking in the energy department.
Lost in the Trees singer Ari Picker inexplicably opened his set by saying "we're not used to playing this long of a set." (Really? 50 minutes?) He then rambled on with a story of a car crash he was in, explaining that he had to fill the time. Regardless, the string section and Tuba sounded great and were fun to watch.
The Low Anthem played some elegant, but snooze-inducing folk so I took the opportunity to sample some food. The festival hit it out of the park with the food and beer choices, for sure. The winner in my book was Entre's menu -- amazing burgers, ban mi sandwiches and even poutine (C'est Bon!)
Side note: Right now Cat Power is covering The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Very cool.
Das Racist woke up the crowd with their bizarro take on hip-hop. With nonsensical lines like "Michael Jackson - A MILLION DOLLARS," the trio made all kinds of racket. On one song, they used the "You Oughta Know" Billy Joel sample to great effect.
Then it was time for crotch-grabbin', amp-climbing Nic Offer and his band !!!. Clouds filled the sky, but the general mood was about to become much brighter. With the contemplative Cat Power and TV on the Radio finishing, !!!'s set was clearly the time to get one's freak on.
When you have moves like Offer has, you have to share them generously and that's just what he did today. By song two, Offer had scaled amplifiers, moved deep into the crowd to dance with fans and crawled just about everywhere he could onstage.
