Many Cards spring games to be broadcast

The Cardinals opened their spring training schedule Saturday and KMOX (1120 AM) carried the game, starting a busy schedule of Cards exhibition-game broadcasts. KMOX also is to air their contest Sunday (against Boston) as it kicks off its package of 18 practice contests on its airwaves.

The station has all the Redbirds’ Saturday and Sunday spring games, five Thursday contests, two Tuesday affairs and one Wednesday outing.

Most weekend games, and some weekday contests, also will air on other Cardinals Radio Network stations. Mike Shannon and John Rooney are back as the Redbirds’ radio broadcasters.

There also are 14 Cards spring games on the television schedule, 10 on Fox Sports Midwest — its biggest spring Cards slate to date. Dan McLaughlin, Al Hrabosky and Rick Horton are back for their third season in a mix-and match broadcaster format, with McLaughlin set to do the play-by-play on FSM’s first nine spring games, Hrabosky in the analyst role for the opening five and Horton providing commentary for the last five. (Horton also will do some play-by-play in the regular season.)

The spring game against Minnesota on March 25 will be a shared production between FSM and Fox Sports North. Twins play-by-play announcer Dick Bremer is to work with Horton.

ESPN and MLB Network each have two games that will be shown in the St. Louis market, with MLB Net having three more that will be blacked out locally because they’re on FSM. But those MLB telecasts, on March 14, 17 and 23, will be carried outside St. Louis.

The TV schedule starts Wednesday, with a Cards-Mets game on MLB Network, then is dark until March 11 (a contest against the Yankees on ESPN). But that starts a stretch in which all but four of their final 17 spring games are set for the tube. Monday is the most popular day for the telecasters, when four games are set for TV.

All spring games on the broadcast schedule are to begin at 12:05 p.m. (St. Louis time). The remaining schedule:
