Channel 5 at 10 on Monday has special information about pit bulls being trained to fight. Can you understand why people get entertained by this kind of act? It isn't what the dogs want to do but their owners make them do it.

Even worse is that these people use "bait" dogs, usually some sort of a mutt or a runt to train the pits to kill.

I don't know if I really want to watch it. Will only affect my thoughts even more. I TRY to trust people. I am becoming more and more cynical when I see what they do. How could you ever help someone in need if they do this kind of stuff? I would be thankful that they got some kind of pain.

spirit...the report had to do with the rescued pit bulls, a few of which are being trained to be therapy dogs. It had nothing to do with fight training.

thanks I will surely watch it. That is more uplifting than what I saw on previews. Sorry if I gave others wrong information. I just saw some dogs actually fighting. But if they have them doing something positive, what a difference.

they even said Missouri has highest number of groups for this type of activity. Can't people here in Missouri find something better than have dog fighting?

I think I'm finally ready to adopt a dog. I've tried replying to several ads on craigslist for people that need Boxer pups re-homed. In some cases I will get a response and then after I reply back I get nothing...very frustrating!

My mind is very set on getting a Boxer, since I know for the most part what to expect with them. My last dog was a Boxer and she was a guardian of her family and home, a 75 lb lap dog, very obedient, and palyful as a puppy all the way up to 14 years old.

F-Town,
There is an organization called, St. Louis Boxer Rescue, who may be able to help you adopt a rescue boxer.
http://www.stlboxerrescue.org/

Also, there are many shelters that may have boxers too. Enter your zip code and the type of dog breed in Petfinder and it will display rescue dogs within your area.

Sometimes rescue groups will also transport their dogs to your area.
http://www.petfinder.com/index.html

I am not associate with any of these organizations but have heard good things about them.

It is wonderful that you consider adoption instead of purchasing them. There are thousands of dogs in shelters needing to find homes desperately.

Yes, there are. Our last dog also came from a shelter; she had been there so long that she was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. Instead, she got 9 years of life with us before she got sick and didn't pull through.

The cats have finally adjusted to the new dog; they are no longer freaked out by her. And the dog LOVES to play frisbee; when I manage a good toss with some hang time, she jumps up and catches it out of the air. When I decide it's time to put the frisbee away, she tries to grab it out of my hands 'cause she wants to play some more..... Very Happy

Sounds perfect and so full of life and energy. If only people could be this way? Try to enjoy time together. I always feel dogs give us true examples of what life should be. Only when people don't appreciate love do they abuse the life.

I am just grateful you two found each other. I am sure Lily was hoping for a good friend and she sure got one. Many more days of throwing frisbees together. Dogs have always filled a 'void' in my life.

Thanks for sharing purrsonality. I need some good news.

I am picking up our new foster doggie tonight! He is a rescued Boxer, and he has had a rough go at life already for being just under 2 years old. Apparently he was kept outside day and night, year round. Boxers are NOT outside dogs. The owner thought he was "donating" the dog to the shelter. A high kill shelter at that Rolling Eyes Luckily he was rescued and now I have a chance to foster him, hopefully all goes well.

This poor guy has a lot of catching up to do...with life and his weight! He's the smallest boxer I've ever seen. Anyone here have some advice on bringing his weight up to a healthy level? I've got some ideas but I'm always open to any other ideas. Thanks

Don't overfeed him, I mean not one large meal. Try smaller bowls of food at least three times a day until he adjusts. I did that with my rescued terrier. He was only half his normal body weight when I brought him home. With the vet's okay, I gave the recommended daily food intake portioned out into multiple meals. It didn't take any time at all for him to fill out.

You're going to get a lot of love back from him. Way to go!

Congratulations! and hope you have patience. This dog will work out fine when he receives the attention and love you give him. I am praying and hoping he gets all the good treatment he deserves. Feel so sorry that he endured the heartache he did. Keep us posted about how he is doing.

Did you give him name or keep the one he had?

Good for you to give this guy a chance. You are to be commended. Hope it all goes well for both of you.

His name is "Pounce" and I think we'll keep it that way because he seems to respond to it pretty well.

The first night went better than expected. He was nervous which is understandable, but he did well around the kids. We resisited giving him too much food even though he devoured what little we gave him! I kept him on a leash when we went outside for potty breaks even though our yard is fully fenced because he is known to be a fence jumper, so I wanted to monitor him closely.

Today is our first real test because he is home alone. We confined him to the kitchen but who knows what we'll come home to.
