The next time anyone mentions Turner Gill's name for a top D1 head coaching position, just watch the 2nd half of last nights game against Bowling Green. Some of the most ridiculous coaching decisions made to blow a 16 point lead in the 2nd half.

It was a poorly coached game by Gill, no doubt. That said, I don't think it erases all of the good work he's done in making THE UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO into a conference champion and a bowl team last year. Gill coached that team up to 8 wins last year, including beating then #12 Ball State in the MAC Championship game. In the 7 years prior to Gill taking over at Buffalo, they won a total of 10 games. After going 2-10 his first year there, his teams won 13 games in the next 2 seasons. This year has been a struggle as they've lost 4 games by 6 points or less (including 1 in OT and the 1 point loss last night).

What it says about Gill is that, more likely, he's learning on the job and needs to learn about game management. But to launch into hyperbolic statements about how he should "never be considered for a top D1 position" is nonsense. Gill will be a coach for a BCS school someday. I just hope it's not back at his alma mater.

Additionally, for those who want to jump right into the overreaction camp because Buffalo is 3-6 and call Gill a one-hit wonder for last year's success, look at the losses Buffalo has had this year:

#13 Pittsburgh
@ Central Florida (lost by 6)
@ Temple
Central Michigan (lost by 6)
@ Western Michigan (lost by 3 in OT)
Bowling Green (lost by 1)

With the exceptions of Western Michigan and maybe Bowling Green, all of those other teams are quality opponents. Central Michigan was just outside the top 25 when they played them (they beat Michigan St earlier this season). Temple's head coach is one of the leading candidates for National Coach of the Year. Central Florida is undefeated at home, and was within 10 points of Miami on the road in the 4th quarter.

Look, it's not in my nature to defend and advocate for a former Husker, but I just think that some of the kneejerk reaction to Gill's struggles this season has been unwarranted, and certainly over-the-top. If anything, the guy majorly overachieved last year with a group that had no business being as successful as they were. Thus, he sets himself up to be questioned this year if the team falls back down to Earth a little bit. It's still Buffalo. I still think the guy is a heck of a coach.

If Pelini struggles in Lincoln for a period of time, I'm sure they will call Turner Gill.

They may call but no way they hire him. Not a big enough name for Husker fans.

He's a good coach who has done a really nice job with that program.

Anyone can have a bad game, even in Short Attention Span America.

I thought the almighty (Osborne) would back him?

They played a poor second half, sure; but Bowling Green has to be given some credit here. They have the most talented reciever in the nation the no one has ever heard of, Freddie barnes, already over 100 catches on the season. BG got their non-existent running game to produce some yards and Buffalo took some extremely costly personal foul penalties in the second half.

If they let Iowa State beat them again it could happen sooner than later. Braska is clearly not ready for prime time yet, the Big 12 north vs south Champ game will be brutal..

Didn't Bowling Green almost beat Mizzou this year?

it's ironic you would call out Gill

Missouri has a head coach who is out coached in the 2nd half of virtually every game.

What are 2nd half adjustments?

Sin,

Pinkel and Yost(formerly the clueless Dave C)

Well said - I agree completely.

I'm also glad to know I'm not the only person who watches those goofy Tuesday night MAC games.
