Additionally, for those who want to jump right into the overreaction camp because Buffalo is 3-6 and call Gill a one-hit wonder for last year's success, look at the losses Buffalo has had this year:
#13 Pittsburgh
@ Central Florida (lost by 6)
@ Temple
Central Michigan (lost by 6)
@ Western Michigan (lost by 3 in OT)
Bowling Green (lost by 1)
With the exceptions of Western Michigan and maybe Bowling Green, all of those other teams are quality opponents. Central Michigan was just outside the top 25 when they played them (they beat Michigan St earlier this season). Temple's head coach is one of the leading candidates for National Coach of the Year. Central Florida is undefeated at home, and was within 10 points of Miami on the road in the 4th quarter.
Look, it's not in my nature to defend and advocate for a former Husker, but I just think that some of the kneejerk reaction to Gill's struggles this season has been unwarranted, and certainly over-the-top. If anything, the guy majorly overachieved last year with a group that had no business being as successful as they were. Thus, he sets himself up to be questioned this year if the team falls back down to Earth a little bit. It's still Buffalo. I still think the guy is a heck of a coach.
Well said - I agree completely.
I'm also glad to know I'm not the only person who watches those goofy Tuesday night MAC games.
