My wife claims to be able to recognize The Edge's guitar playing without Bono's vocals or knowing that it's a U2 song. Well, I can see that back in their Big Music days of War and The Unforgettable Fire maybe, not so sure about now.

But that got me thinking about recognizable guitar playing generally, so I'll just throw out the three names that occurred to me right away:

1. Mark Knopfler

2. Tom Verlaine

3. Brian Setzer

(Asterisk on Brian, I'm referring to his rockabilly playing. He's arguably the world's greatest fake guitarist, and he could probably mimic anyone with no more than a couple of minutes of goofing around.)

Albert King...the first time I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn, I said to myself...who is this guy stealing all of Albert's riffs and sound. (Sorry I know Albert is long gone)

Alvin Lee has an unmistakable sound/style. A few years back he recorded an album called Alvin Lee in Tennessee with a bunch of Sun session musicians including Scotty Moore. As soon as I heard this..not knowing who it was....I said Alvin Lee.

Every time I hear Sonny Landreth...same way. Fellow Louisiana Guitarist Tab Benoit has an unmistakable sound as well.

I should add Mick Mars and Warren DeMartini.

DeMartini is probably the greatest guitarist most people haven't heard of.
