My mom niw resides in a nursing home, and we are close to the time to get her a wheelchair. Folks at Delmar Gardens said it gets billed at $4000. I made some calls. You can get one for about $1000---easy.

Yeah, lets let the Gov run the show. They know what they are doing.

But does that mean we criminalize the 5% who choose not to?

'At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge,' said the gentleman, taking up a pen, 'it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.'
'Are there no prisons?"

'Plenty of prisons,' said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

'And the Union workhouses.' demanded Scrooge. 'Are they still in operation?'

'Both very busy, sir.'

'Oh. I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,' said Scrooge. 'I'm very glad to hear it.'

'Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,' returned the gentleman, 'a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?'

'Nothing!' Scrooge replied.

'You wish to be anonymous?'

'I wish to be left alone,' said Scrooge. 'Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned-they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there.'

'Many can't go there; and many would rather die.'

'If they would rather die,' said Scrooge, 'they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

It was the republicans who forced a provision in the law that forbids the Government from negotiating prices for drugs and medical devices in medicare. They don't pay $4K for a scooter at the VA.

Hmmm... You can already be fined for not having driver's insurance while driving.

You can already be fined/imprisoned for not paying taxes.

You can be fined/imprisoned for lying to the federal government generally -- even about something as simple as what your favorite color is.

Here's a good question -- why can't conservatives just obey the damned law and be done with it?

So let's see what the equation is -- virtually universal health care coverage versus the ever-lasting desire to be stupid at any cost exhibited by conservatives... Which should I choose? What's that? Choosing health care for virtually everyone ALSO horks off every halfwit this side of the Pecos? It's the easiest choice I've ever made.

Comparing this to auto insurance doesn't fly, because not everyone drives. You can take the bus, a taxi or walk. You don't need auto insurance & the govt. doesn't force you to purchase it. Driving is a privelege, not a right, if you choose to exercise that privelage, to drive, you must pass a test to get a license and then purchase insurance. But you do have the freedom, to not drive at all and not purchase insurance.

This new bill will take away a freedom...

I had to leave for a while. Just got back and I see that no one has yet defended this issue. Very interesting... Maybe by their silence, they are showing us that they disagree with this idea. But it would be nice to see one of the usual Obama supporters actually criticize something the administration is trying to do.

That would require free thinking- not allowed in the current Democratic Party.

I defended it. You just ignored it.

I think your defense was responded to quite well by rtrue, Giovinco, mtomto, Elite1, and a couple of others. I could not have added anything to it that they didn't say already. I'll wait and see if anyone else can defend it.

Their responses were weak just like yours. Burying your head in the sand instead of addressing some real world dilemmas is not a solution. All we have seen offered from the right is status quo non-solutions and denials.

The same penalties happen to you if you don't pay your income tax. It's no big deal.

It is if you don't have the $15K. Wink

$15K is 2.5% of $600,000. If you're not paying the $15K when you make that much, then you need to go to jail. The tax is 2.5% of income. Wink
