Unfortunately, one of the reasons certain movie themes are so recognizable is because they're played every time the movie is mentioned, either on Oscar night, or in highlight shows.

That's why I nearly ran screaming from the theatre long before the end of "Close Encounters of the Maddening Five Chords Kind", hearing that riff repeated nonstop for the last hour.

For that reason, I've never seen "Chariots of Fire" because that danged song, with the slo-mo footage of the runners on the beach, is in my head like the "It's a Small World" song from Disneyland.

One happy exception is the laconic, evocative guitar chords of my beloved "Brokeback Mountain" --- suggesting that in those wide open spaces you have all the time in the world to your lonely selves ---, which reach an emotional crescendo perfectly timed with the end credits. Cue sobbing sounds of audience.

At the Oscars and Golden Globes, I never tired of hearing that familiar theme. However, I DID get tired, very quickly, of Larry McMurtrys utter geekdom.

WOW...how did I let that one slip by?

One of the alltime great movie scores with final credits worth sitting through. Capped off by a final shot and instrumental bed over the final credits by Mark Knopfler...the only time I ever heard bagpipes in a song I absolutely loved.

Whenever I've lost faith in the human race, I log on to Netflix and rent either "Local Hero" or "Breaking Away". It's much cheaper and happier than psychotherapy.

Another movie theme that took me away to another place was the closing credits song "Feel Flows" by The Beach Boys, over the end of the wonderful "Almost Famous". Despite being a Beach Boys buff for 40 years, I'd never heard "Feel Flows" until then. Hearing it wafting through the theatre in Dolby Surround was an almost otherworldly experience.

Fun fact about "Almost Famous": The good-looking, mustachioed band member who befriends the young Rolling Stone writer is Billy Crudup, the voice behind the MasterCard "Priceless" commercials.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

You would have loved to have been at the Hollywood Bowl this past summer. Ennio Morricone was there to lead his orchestra in performing his movie themes, including his "spaghetti westerns" music, along with "Days of Heaven"; "The Untouchables"; "Two Mules For Sister Sara", etc..

I was only 14 when I saw "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" at the old North Drive-In in STL, and even though at that age I hated westerns, I LOVED that music.
