Were there actually more drivers on I-70 than before? I recall hearing that I-44 had LESS total traffic after the I-64 closure than before the project began.

I guess that explains it. They ALL used 70. Seriously, my drive times doubled when the second phase of the project started.
I attribute a lot of the problem to the "misuse" of the reversible lanes. Rather than being used like they were designed, in the morning they were used for westbound traffic (out of downtown) and in the evening they were used for eastbound traffic (into downtown). As of right now, they don't even switch. They are always for eastbound traffic.

As the Attack! Rat predicted, pope like gridlock did not grip St. Louis for 2 years.

^ To be fair, it was predicted and understood by anyone who is honest about how traffic works. This does not include highway engineers and MoDOT, whose livelihoods rely on laying more, more, more pavement

As this nightmare boondoggle nears completion I'm noticing a ton of blacktop being used at connection points on Hanley and Big Bend. Why? They've had two years. Why are they NOT using concrete?
Which would last MUCH longer. Blacktop will get torn up, potholed, rutted.
They've had the roadways closed so they could do it right. Why not actually do it Right? Lay down a good base and then pour high quality concrete?
With the traffic at Hanley/Dale/Eager for instance that blacktop will be beat to hell in 2 years and have to be repaved again! Not to mention all of the exposed seams I'm seeing where of course water will seep down and freeze expand and cause potholes.
Typical half-*ss MoDOT.
But I'm sure Gateway constructor Execs are getting some nice bonuses out of cutting all these corners!

If finishing early and under budget means "boondoggle," you'd better let the folks at Webster know about it.

Yea, same with the Lambert W1W project.
