According to Rosenthal, "some who know [Matt] Holliday say he would prefer not to play in New York."

Take it for what its worth, but I for one find rosenthal to be an unreliable source.....

Rosenthal is correct. Holliday has made clear that he prefers the NL over the AL, and is not found of the lifestyle pace and overbearing media of some of the large markets. I have said from the beginning that Holliday is very unlikely to become a Yankee. The Giants may be STL's top competitor for Holliday.

It's tough to say how much a player's preference influences a player's decision. For example, I doubt A.J. Burnett "preferred" Toronto to St. Louis in the off-season before 2006. He said he was interested in St. Louis and grew up in Alabama a Cardinal fan, but money talks sometimes. I'm sure it's different for every player, but it's probably the best idea to just take this kind of info with a grain of salt.

The NY media is rabid and merciless. Can't say I blame him.

The LA and SF media are much more benign.

Nobody said he wanted to play in a small market, either. This is not a small market and never has been considered one! KC is small market (over 1,000,000 less metro population). Oakland is a small market. Etc. St. Louis is a top 20 metro population market with essentially a big market payroll and big market fan support.

AJ wasn't even just the money, his 3 year opt out clause was unheard of at the time. How could you not take a deal like that? Front loaded money, and then you can opt out of the contract after you have collected a good portion of it, but the team cannot opt out? It was a win/win for the player.

I dont thnk market has a lot to do with the situation either. I think this situation differs from the Burnett situation a lot. With AJB, he just grew up a Cards fan from the south. With Holliday it seems to be much more about his family. It has been pretty well covered that he is extremely close with his family. He, and his brother, are best friends, and he is the coach and Vandy. The proximity to STL allowed him to come to multiple games this season, along with the rest of his family in Oklahoma. He says that has given him a huge comfort level in regards to his children and wife.

Im not saying that will lead him to STL, ultimately, I am just saying that, I think he acknowledges that the East Coast would be a lot more difficult for him, personally, than the Midwest, or even West coast.

Exactly my point. Was it his initial preference to play in Toronto? Probably not, but the 5 year deal with the 3 year opt out clause that you stated made it too hard to pass up.

Also, MH is married with children. Assuming equitable offers, his wife would most likely have influence as to where they live.

I don't know if Rosenthal is right or wrong but I'd rather hear that Holliday doesn't want to go to New York rather than he does.

With the Yankees winning the World Series, the Angels may be the toughest competition in the Holliday negotiations.

Anaheim freed up 25 million by letting Guerrero and Escobar go. Escobar's 10 million will go to Abreu(done deal) and soon Lackey. Guerrero's money plus a little extra will go towards Holliday. I'd also have to imagine Chone Figgins goes with Brandon Wood finally getting a shot at 3rd base. So they should have the money and with Guerrero gone, they'll have a need for Holliday or Bay.
