Question for volleyball followers. Why does volleyball play a standard bracket (I beat you and move on) from districts thru quarters then do some weird pool play thing at state?

Becasue they are the only smart ones to get the two best teams in the state to play for a state championship. Unlike the other sports were you have West VS East Laughing

That answer has merit, but if that is indeed the best way for that sport and I've seen in season tourneys done this way, but then why not do it in district play and at the sectional/quarterfinal site? Why change so drastically at the end from the rest of the tournament? Could you imagine at the basketball final four play halves against the other three teams to determine the championship game teams?

Basketball and volleyball are like apples and oranges. You would have to throw out a hundred years of tradition to run one sport like the other.

MSHSAA could use the round robin scheme for districts and sectionals, but it would take longer, require more referees, and in the end, cost significantly more.
