Just watching the Colts/Texans game, and Manning threw a pick over the middle. Happens. The funny part was when the LB was running it back and Manning was heading him off.

Announcer's words: "Manning will try to make the tackle"

Yeah, not so much.

Manning kind of squared up on the guy, but when the LB was running at him, Manning turned into a matador and kinda flimsily threw his arm out while side-stepping out of his way.

What if Bulger did something like that? Is it different because this is a QB that has to try and make a tackle? I think its even worse than what Bulger did ("the slide") because instead of trying to get an extra yard, Manning was charged with preventing 6 the other way.

Luckily for him (Manning), some other guys closed in on the Texans defender so he wasn't alone for very long. Just an observation - not trying to stir it up (much). I've seen kickers and punters lay the wood on returns, but I guess Manning didn't want to get himself hurt making a tackle on an interception that he threw.

Where have I heard that before?

The beat goes on. Now we are comparing Bulger to Manning too funny. Of course Manning got out of the way good for him. Yes we would make fun of Bulger. The difference is Manning will put up some points and not suck the whole game.

I remember a game against the Colts a few years ago that Bulger got injured trying to make a tackle on an interception.

And now he just slid a yard short of the first down marker to avoid a hit and the Colts ended up having to punt.

EXACT same situation and play as Bulger.

And Stlvinnie - I'm not comparing the two beyond the scope of their unwillingness to get hurt. Chillax, brother.

Yes, and he was out for about half the season and of course any playoff hopes the Rams had for 2005 ended with that play.

The Rams were leading the game at that point, IIRC it was 17-0, but after that the whole season collapsed--starting with the Colts roaring back to blow out the Rams.

I understood Bulger's instinctive gut reaction, going all-out to make the tackle, but I disagreed with it--and I still do.

I also agree with Peyton Manning's not doing more than vaguely attempting an "arm tackle" against the Texans, for a starting QB the risk simply isn't worth it...

I remember when Bulger got injured on that play, the announcers talked about how Dan Marino always walked off the field after an interception.

Is everyone going to gloss over his slide short of the marker? A YARD short? To bring up a 4th down and a punt in a close game?

Yes, I know, they're 7-0 and the Rams were 0-7. Big difference, but I'd be hesitant to say Bulger should have risked his season on a run that Manning should get a pass on. If you give him a pass for the same exact thing Bulger did, you're essentially saying that Manning doesn't have to try and win on his own. And by saying that, you're negating any argument you have about Manning and his prowess in the league.
